Patrolman Teddy Roberts removes a revolver from Daniel Isiah Schwartz’s pants on Sept. 30 before arresting him on a weapons charge.
In the early morning hours of Sept. 30, the Selmer Police received a call from a BP gas station clerk who reported a suspicious man had entered their bathroom. According to the police report, the clerk reported that the man, 18-year-old Daniel Isiah Schwartz of Selmer, dropped several needles on the floor (later believed to be bullets) before going into the bathroom with a change of pants. Selmer Patrolman Teddy Roberts responded to the scene before Schwartz exited the bathroom and said that the suspect looked away from the waiting officer as he approached the register. “He made a small purchase and was shaking when he handed the clerk the money,” Roberts said. Roberts said that because of Schwartz’s appearance, wearing a hoodie on a warm night and the fact that he kept touching his waistband on his pants, a search was conducted. “My training and experience led me to believe he was armed,” Roberts said. “As touching the area where a firearm is located is a typical trait of armed persons.” As the search was being conducted, Schwartz admitted to Roberts that he was armed. Roberts seized a .357 revolver and Schwartz was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. Officials familiar with this case have stated that additional charges are possible.

On Halloween night, all manner of ghoulish creatures will take over downtown Selmer beginning at 5 p.m. for a massive, four-hour Halloween Party, Costume Contest, and Haunted House. Last year, nearly 2,000 people packed the streets of downtown Selmer for the first ever street party and this year, organizers are doubling the size of the party with more booths, more games, and a lot more candy. The Independent Appeal is partnering with the City of Selmer, Selmer Parks & Recreation and dozens of businesses, community organizations, local churches, and individuals for our second annual Halloween Street Party, Costume Contest and Haunted House with proceeds benefiting arts education in McNairy County. Last year’s event doubled the county’s budget for elementary art supplies and this year we hope to raise not only awareness, but much needed funds to purchase art supplies and more for arts in local elementary schools.

Local residents enjoy last year’s Halloween Street Party festivities in front of the Independent Appeal office in Downtown Selmer. This year’s party, held Halloween night from 5-9 p.m., will nearly double in size with more vendors, more events and even more candy. In addition to the party, Kids and their parents will have plenty of Halloween-related events to choose from this holiday. On Oct. 26, the Saturday prior to the party, the McNairy Regional Alliance will sponsor a Zombie Invasion Walk in downtown Selmer which will also benefit local
arts education. The goal our publication and partner organizations have set for this year’s street party is to provide a safe, family friendly environment for trick or treaters of all ages. This year, we are expecting nearly a ton of candy to be given
away during the event. In addition, the party will feature Halloween themed events and activities from each of our partners as well as booths and games, traditional decorations, a Halloween movie, toys and prizes,
