Resources exist for local abused women

BOBCATS MOVE PAST HAWKS

Domestic abuse is a continuing problem in our nation and world-wide. Abuse victims cross all racial, social-economic and religious lines making it difficult to determine or profile abusers, however there is a local or-

ganization to help victims break the cycle of abuse. Started in Jackson, Tenn. in 1975 Women’s and Mens Resource and Rape Assistance Program has expanded to cover 14 area counties Nina Morey, WRAP advocate covering Hardin, McNairy, and Wayne counties. “We are trying to change our image to make people realize that we serve adolescents, children, men and the LGBT community as well as serving women,” Morey said. “ In America, every nine seconds someone is being abused.” Morey said that abuse statistics and reports are growing. She said that there has long been a stigma attached to victims who leave their spouse. “They put it in their mind, as a child growing up, that when you get married...you stay married.” Morey said. “It doesn’t matter what he does, or what he says. You stay with him. But now I’m seeing women now even older women 60-70 years old, finally getting enough of it.” Morey said that victims are beginning to realize that they don’t have to put up with it anymore. According Center for Court Innovation, Predictors of Program Outcome and Recidivism at the Bronx Misdemeanor Domestic Violence Court, more than 63 percent of men who are arrested for domestic violence will be

rearrested for it again. When you combine this with the fact that 70 percent of these incidents go unreported, the number of repeat offenders is even higher. Morey said that victims cannot afford to believe someone who claims they won’t repeat their abuse. “If it happens once, it will happen again,” Morey said. Morey said that this abuse may not happen until months even years into a relationship. Some victims will call 911 after an initial abuse report and will change their minds once their spouse calms down. If the victim doesn’t show up the case will be dismissed. WRAP helps victims break out of abusive relationships by providing emergency shelter, counseling, and presenting options to victims who often times feel helpless. “They may not work by choice or he won’t let them work,” Morey said. “It’s all about power and control. (Victims) blame themselves, sometimes even after they have gotten to the last straw and gotten out of this relationship. “What they do to survive is the right thing,” Morey said. Morey compared abuse victims to caged animals which think only of survival...doing what they can to survive until rescued.
