A house damaged in the severe storm which hit Bethel Springs last January. So far, regulations and red tape have prevented any state or federal aid for the storm’s victims.
The number of early votes in the Nov. 5 Selmer election is 409, as of last Tuesday morning, according to McNairy County Administrator of Elections Joanie Collins. Decided by the election will be the mayor and two aldermen. Incumbent Mayor David Robinson, Alderman John Smith, Board of Education member Tony Chapman and Roger Hill are running for this office. Incumbent Alderman John Finlayson, Frederick Yarbrough, Neil Justice and John Norris are seeking the two alderman positions. Early voting continues until Thursday at the Election Commission office at the Courthouse from 9 a.m until 4:30 p.m.

Regardless of the weather, the Halloween Street Party hosted by the Independent Appeal and the City of Selmer, will go on as scheduled from 5-9 p.m., Thursday, October 31. Currently the event is planned to be held downtown Selmer between 2nd and 4th Streets, however, in the event of rain the event will move to the Selmer Community Center on 5th Street. No matter what the skies have in store for McNairy County on Halloween night, one thing is certain. There will be candy...and lots of it! More
than a ton of candy is expected to flow into the sacks of local children (and some adults) during the celebration. When you add in the games, movie, stories, face painting, costume contest, haunted house, art show and live entertainment this Halloween is sure to be an event your children will cherish for a lifetime. Entry to this event is free and visitors will find a safe and family friendly opportunity to trick or treat whether indoors or out, so wear your costumes and come out for a great night. A 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Ashley Johnston of Henderson, Tenn. was traveling south on Bethesda-Purdy Road in Selmer last Wednesday when it crossed into the left lane, went off the road, and overturned just past Lipford Road, according to Trooper Kennie Lamberth of the Tennessee Highway Patrol who responded to the accident.
