Monogram Refrigeration’s Selmer plant is making a new model refrigerator and expanding its warehouse, according to parent company GE’s press release.

An event was held Dec. 17 in Selmer to celebrate the new product line and warehouse.

The new refrigerator is the first GE Monogram product line since 2001. The new French door built-in model is the first entry of GE into the fastest-growing market. This product is already in production and is in addition to the other models manufactured at the Selmer plant. Monogram is investing $20 million in the plant in order to produce the new product.

“Today is a very exciting day...The response we are getting for this new product so far is tremendous. We think it’s going to be a real hit,” Deming said.

Eastview Dollar General store robbed again

The Eastview Dollar General store was robbed for the second time in five months Dec. 17.

According to the incident report provided by the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department, store Manager Mary Moore told Deputy Buddy Fuller that a man wearing a black ski mask, a thick camoflage coat, black or dark blue jeans and black shoes, came into the store with a black handgun and demanded money.

Cashier Jordan Ross told Fuller that the man attempted to break into the cash register, and when he could not do so, pointed the gun at her and told her to open it. Moore then stepped in, opened the register, and put the money into Dollar General bag. The suspect then fled on foot, with the $260 from the cash register.

This store, as well as the Dollar General in Bethel Springs, were burglarized earlier this year in separate incidents.

During the previous burglary in Eastview, the burglar cut his or her way into the Dollar General in the early morning hours of July 24.

The thief, who was described as a white individual of unknown gender, made off with merchandise and an undetermined amount of cash before fleeing the scene.

McNairy County Sheriff’s Deputy Zach Bay arrived on the scene to follow up on a motion alarm from within the building shortly after the criminal fled and found a hole cut into the back wall of the building. Bay waited at that location until backup arrived, when deputies entered the store through the hole and cleared the building.

After determining that the burglar was no longer on the scene, officers allowed an employee into the store and reviewed the instore video of the break-in.

“The video camera showed that the suspect came in through the back bathroom (and) crawled through the aisles up to the

The thief was dressed in all black with a black toboggan over his or her head.

This is the third time in five months that a Dollar General in the county has been robbed.

Thieves also cut a hole in the wall of the Bethel Springs Dollar General in November and took about $4,000 cash from safes, according to an incident report provided by the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy Jason Gray responded to a call from store manager, Tina Weatherly. Upon arriving, he noticed that a hole had been cut in the metal at the back of the building.

Inside the store, another hole was cut in a wall that separated the stock room from the rest of the store, and a shelf was knocked off that wall.

A phone box in the office was damaged ,and the hinges of the safes were removed.

This crime was turned over to Investigator Robert Hitchborn.

The heart of the community: Ramer Ruritans celebrate 60 years

The Ramer Ruritan Club held its 60th anniversary banquet on Dec. 17. It was founded on Dec. 30, 1953.

Ramer Mayor George Armstrong said he told someone he had a meeting to go to, and they said it must be pretty special if he was going to miss NCIS. “Well, it is pretty special,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong listed some of the accomplishments of the Ruritans. They have sponsored the Boy Scouts for about 50 years. Ramer has a ball field due to their efforts. The most recent contribution of the Ruritans to the Ramer community is the Veterans’ Plaza.

The Ruritans helped turn the bean field where people used to play ball into a real ball field.

It is because of the Ruritans that Ramer Elementary School has an awning and students do not have to stand in the rain.

“We put up the awning so the kids wouldn’t have to stand in the rain. They’d have a heart attack today,” said past President Jim Gray about parents if their kids had to stand in the rain.

Gray talked about how persistent the Ruritans were in their fundraising. Back then, everyone was on an eight-party line except the Levi Strauss factory, which had two two-party lines. One of the Ruritans would call a prospective contributor, and if he turned them down, another one would call him.

“We would leave with $3,000 or $4,000 worth of sponsorships,” Gray said.

Former Ruritan President and Superintendent of Schools Estel Mills said, “You who live in Ramer or who have lived in Ramer, know that there is a certain characteristic of this community that makes it an ideal, all-American community.”

“It all comes back to leadership. You’ve just been fortunate to have a lot of good leaders born and raised here and some imported,” Mills said.

“The Ruritans kept doing one thing after another to improve the schools,” Mills said.

Mills recounted that after World War II there was a teacher shortage. The Ramer school provided housing to couples if both were teachers.

“That put a little burden on me because I was single. I looked around and found a first-grade teacher...and I married her so I could get a free house,” Mills joked.

“The Ramer Ruritan Club exemplifies the very foundation of Ruritan National—small communities having a Ruritan Club with a great big heart. My birthday wish to you is that you grow and continue your great community service,” said former Ruritan National President Jerry Ellis.

“Thank you for your support of veterans and your community service,” said Ellis, a Vietnam veteran.

Ellis recognized charter members Vester Lee McCullar and James Boucher, who was not present at the banquet.

“It’s always a privilege to pay tribute to an organization that is the heart of a community, and that’s what the Ramer Ruritans are,” said McNairy County Mayor Ronnie Brooks.

Brooks read a proclamation honoring the Ramer Ruritans.

“Thank you for what you do, and this is a very small token for what you have done for the past 60 years,” Brooks said.

Elam introduced Judge Van McMahan as someone who went away to school, but came back here, which is something unusual.

“If you ever get a ticket, he’s the man you want to know,” Elam joked.

“I am a direct beneficiary of everything you have done,” McMahan said.

McMahan once played ball on the ball field that the Ruritans created.

“I appreciate everything y’all have done. Somebody said it would not be the same without you, and it would not,” McMahan said.

Substituting for Southwest Human Resources Agency Executive Director Mike Smith, who was unable to be present, McMahan presented Elam with a certificate of appreciation from SWHRA to the Ruritans.

“I know Mike would have loved to have been here to present this to you, and he wanted me to tell you, ‘Thanks so much for all you do,’” McMahan said.

Elam talked about the Ruritans’ latest project, the veterans’ memorial. The goal was to raise $12,000. They didn’t think they could do it at first, but they did and along with $3,000 worth of work, made the memorial a reality.

Smith was on the committee in charge of the memorial, and Elam gave McMahan a picture to give to Smith. Elam,

John Anderson, Commander of the Selmer American Legion, spoke at the banquet as he did at the memorial dedication.

Elam said he was going to speak for a minute.

“A little bit ago you said two minutes,” Anderson joked.

Elam joked that Anderson came to the dedication with an armload of books, and he thought Anderson was going to talk all day.

“He talked for three minutes and said more than I could say in a week,” Elam said.

Anderson asked all veterans at the banquet to stand.

“The rest of you that are still seated. Look at these gentlemen. I can’t pay them tribute. There is no way that I can do this. They’ve done this for themselves,” Anderson said.

“The purpose of the American Legion is not to meet and get drunk and do all these things you hear about. We’re an or-

ganization that we’re veterans helping veterans because we know what it’s like,” Anderson said.

“There was a time when each one of the men, myself included, that stood up just a moment ago—they signed a blank check payable to the people of the United States of America.

The amount—everything they had, up to and including their lives. Those pieces of granite up there at the Veterans’ Plaza.

There are a bunch of names up there of veterans that gave their lives so that you could sit here tonight and enjoy yourselves and feel absolutely safe,” Anderson said.

Anderson thanked not only the men who went away to fight, but also the families that stayed home for their service.

Former National Ruritan Director and Zone Governor Frank Dodson, of Grand Junction, Tenn. swore in officers from the Eastview and Ramer clubs. Elam will again serve as president of the Ramer club next year.

The Stantonville FCE Club met at the Saw Meal Restaurant in Adamsville last Wednesday for their annual Christmas luncheon. Each member enjoyed a delicious meal and then played Dirty Santa, where they received a nice Christmas ornament. Afterwards, fruit and gift baskets were made up and distributed to nursing home patients in both Adamsville and Selmer.

Most school roof repairs finished, BSES gets walk-in freezers

Director of Schools Charlie Miskelly updated the McNairy County Board of Education on roof repairs at its meeting last Thursday.

He said that repairs are complete for Michie and Selmer Elementary School roofs, and that a wall at Selmer Middle School has settled over the years, and there are enough cracks allowing water to enter the school during a blowing rain. The

Deming said that the most important attendees were the Monogram employees that were wearing their blue company shirts.

“Without these guys’ hard work and dedication, I wouldn’t be standing here today announcing the introduction of our Monogram...product,” Deming said.

Deming then spoke about the warehouse sign unveiling.

“Unveiling the sign is a huge thing for us. This signifies the continuing investment in our future. It brings with it the possibility of adding jobs,” Deming said.

“Monogram employees have done an awesome job of positioning us for this new opportunity,” Chanantry said.

Chanantry said that Monogram employees were asked to get production for the new model running in a short period of time.

“They not only accomplished this task they were given, but they did it with the most positive attitude,” Chanantry said.

Chanantry attributed the employees’ success to great teamwork and hard work.

“They built a beautiful, quality product, and I couldn’t be more pleased,” Chanantry said.

Chanantry thanked Hagerty because the McNairy County/Selmer Industrial Board financed the warehouse purchase with a loan guaranteed by ECD. The state is also helping with employee job training.

“This is just the beginning.

We’re looking forward to a great year in ‘14,” Chanantry said.

“We’ve had a terrific tour of a fanstasic facility. I was overwhelmed by the craftsmanship that I saw here. It is absolutely wonderful,” Hagerty said.

“On behalf of Gov. Haslam, I want to let everybody in this room know: this is important to us. It really makes a big difference and we’re very thrilled to have this significant investment in Selmer and McNairy County. It’s a big day for all of us in Tennessee,” Hagerty said.

Hagerty thanked Brooks and Moore, saying that the county economic development team is terrific.

“What you are showing here is that you can compete

“We have the best employees in the State of Tennessee,” Deming said.

Miskelly said that an audit of the school district had been completed Dec. 10. Two findings deal with the timing of federal and state revenues and expenditures. A third finding on a centralized accounting system is issued every year.

Record warmth, strong storms on first day of Winter

Record high temperatures in the mid-70s brought strong storms to the McNairy County area last Saturday on the first day of Winter. The storms felled trees and downed a few power lines, however, there were no reports of serious damage or injury due to the storm.

Ramer seeks grant

McNairy County awarded Used Motor Oil Collection Grant

Ramer will be applying for a Community Development Block Grant in the near future, according to Mayor George Armstrong.

Project engineers TRW, of Nashville, believe the cost of the project will be around $200,000. The money would be used for a new filtration system and a larger retention tank for the water system. Red water has been a continuing problem in the Ramer water system.

Nelson Community Development Group is writing the grant application. The deadline for the application is in February 2014.

The required surveys should be completed within about a week, Armstrong said. The grant is intended to help low and middle income people, and cities and towns seeking it must document that most of the people helped by the grant falls into those categories.

Ramer will have to put up about 7 percent matching funds, Armstrong said.

The required public hearing was held Dec. 12.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Division of Solid Waste Management announced $444,300 in Used Motor Oil Collection Grants last Wednesday to establish, upgrade or replace existing equipment or establish a new collection center.

McNairy County landed one of the more than 27 grants awarded to Tennessee municipalities, which will provide $16,300 for a tank, canopy, pad, crusher, heater, pump and absorbent.

“Educating citizens on the proper disposal of used motor oil can

have a direct impact on the water quality of Tennessee’s lakes, streams and groundwater,” TDEC Commissioner Bob Martineau said.

Tennesseans who change their own motor oil generate more than one million gallons of used oil each year, which can pollute soil and water and interfere with the operation of sewer systems when not properly disposed. The General Assembly authorized the Used Oil Collection Act of 1993 to assist local communities in collecting used oil and reducing its negative effects on the environment. Tennessee’s Solid Waste Management Act requires counties to have at least one place in the county where used oil can be

properly disposed. Used oil collection grants are funded by a two cent deposit on every quart of oil purchased in the state.

Used Motor Oil Collection Grants assist local governments in improving and expanding used oil infrastructure for the collection of used oil from do-it-yourselfers.

Equipment purchased through the Used Motor Oil Collection Grants may include containers, used oil heaters, containment structures, shelter covers and other items. Tennessee counties, cities, solid waste authorities and counties having a metropolitan form of government are eligible for funding consideration.

McNAIRY VOICES What do you want for Christmas?

If you are like me, and rely heavily on a debit or credit card to make many of your Christmas purchases, you were likely disturbed by the news that Target, our nation’s third largest retailer was hit by a major credit card breach affecting up to 40 million customers.

According to a report on the company’s website, guests who visited Target stores from Nov. 27 until Dec. 15 and who used a credit or debit card could be at risk. To make matters worse, Target waited until Dec. 19 to release this information to the public, holding off to make a statement even after an investigative reporter, Brian Krebs, who runs a computer security blog reported it on Dec. 18.

This could not have happened at a worse time for Target or their consumers. With just days remaining before the Christmas holiday, last-minute shoppers may find empty accounts instead of approvals at check-out lines across the nation this week. For Target, who relies heavily on credit card purchases, this may cut into their holiday sales which account for more than 20 percent of their annual total. Long term, the breach could dog the retailer for months or even years to come as their PR people work on saving face and consumers wait to see how Target will work to resolve these issues.

During a similar breach involving the Sony Corporation in 2011, the tech giant was also criticized for their slow response, but Sony did eventually pony up the cash to offer a year of credit protection service for their affected customers.

Target has made no such offer to date.

I believe this highlights the need for strict consumer protection laws requiring timely reporting of security breaches involving credit card data which currently in most states are weak or non-existent. I feel that consumers should be notified immediately if their accounts have been compromised.

“We wanted to make you aware of unauthorized access to Target payment card data,” Target said in a press release on their website Dec. 19. “The unauthorized access may impact guests who made credit or debit card purchases in our U.S. stores from Nov. 27 to Dec. 15, 2013. Your trust is a top priority for Target, and we deeply regret the inconvenience this may cause. The privacy and protection of our guests’ information is a matter we take very seriously and we have worked swiftly to resolve the incident.

“We began investigating the incident as soon as we learned of it. We have determined that the information involved in this incident included customer name, credit or debit card number, and the card’s expiration date and CVV (the three-digit security code).”

As of now the scale of the damage is unknown, and Target said that it was working with law enforcement to find those responsible.

“We are partnering with a leading third-party forensics firm to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and to examine additional measures we can take that would be designed to help prevent incidents of this kind in the future.

Additionally, Target alerted authorities and financial institutions immediately after we discovered and confirmed the unauthorized access, and we are putting our full resources behind these efforts,” the retailer said in its press release.

Consumers flocked to Target’s Facebook page last Thursday to complain about the breach, issues with logging into the store’s REDcard accounts to cancel or even check accounts for loss, and long waits to speak with customer service representatives. The store’s advice to those who were possibility affected was to take a wait and see approach.

“There is no immediate need to cancel REDCards or any other credit or debit cards used at Target stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, 2013,” a store representative told one affected user on the social networking site. “If you see something that appears fraudulent, contact your bank. REDcard holders should contact Target. Thanks!”

However, federal law limits your potential liability to $0 for loss or theft on your account only if it is reported before any fraudulent charges or withdrawals are made so following Target’s advice may not be the best way to go.

While most consumers will be able to recover most if not all of the stolen funds, the burden falls on them to report any fraudulent activity to their bank, and not the retailer.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, if your credit, ATM, or debit card is lost or stolen, federal law limits your liability for unauthorized charges. Your protection against unauthorized charges depends on the type of card — and when you report the loss.

Credit cards are the safest way to go and offer consumers the most liability protection, but don’t spend more than you can repay or you may end up paying interest on holiday gifts all year long.

The FTC offers these helpful tips to limit your liability with credit and debit cards.

The FTC recommends acting fast to limit your liability for charges you didn’t authorize. Report the loss or theft of your card to the card issuer as quickly as possible. Many companies have toll-free numbers and 24-hour service for such emergencies. Once you report the loss of your ATM or debit card, federal law says you cannot be held liable for unauthorized transfers that occur after that time.

In addition to these initial steps, the agency suggests that consumers followup with their bank with a letter or email.

Include your account number, the date and time when you noticed your card was missing, and when you first reported the loss. You should also check your card statement carefully for transactions you didn’t make. Report discrepancies as possible. Be sure to send the letter to the address provided for billing errors.

You can also check if your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy covers your liability for card thefts. If not, some insurance companies will allow you to change your policy to include this protection.

How to Report Fraudulent Transactions Contact your ATM or debit card issuer.

Report the fraudulent transaction as soon as you discover a withdrawal or purchase you didn’t make.

Write a follow up letter to confirm that you reported the problem.

Keep a copy of your letter.

Send it by certified mail and ask for a return receipt. Update your files.

Record the dates you made calls or sent letters.

Keep copies of letters in your files.

How to Limit Your Losses The Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA) offer protection if your credit, ATM, or debit cards are lost or stolen.

Credit Card Loss or Fraudulent Charges Under the FCBA, your liability for unauthorized use of your credit card tops out at $50. However, if you report the loss before your credit card is used, the FCBA says you are not responsible for any charges you didn’t authorize. If your credit card number is stolen, but not the card, you are not liable for unauthorized use.

ATM or Debit Card Loss or Fraudulent Transfers.

If you report an ATM or debit card missing before someone uses it, the EFTA says you are not responsible for any un-

authorized transactions. If someone uses your ATM or debit card before you report it lost or stolen, your liability depends on how quickly you report it.

Again if you report a loss before a charge is made you are not responsible for any losses. If a fraudulent debit purchase has been made, the liability if reported in the first two days after the loss is only $50, after two days that figure jumps to $500 for the first 60 days with total liability going to the consumer if the theft is not reported for more than 60 days.

If unauthorized transactions are made with your debit card number, but your card is not lost, you are not liable for those transactions if you report them within 60 days of your statement being sent to you.

How to Protect Your Cards and Account Information For Credit and ATM or Debit Cards Don’t disclose your account number over the phone unless you initiate the call.

Guard your account information. Never leave it out in the open or write it on an envelope.

Keep a record of your account numbers, expiration dates, and the telephone numbers of each card issuer so you can report a loss quickly.

Draw a line through blank spaces on charge or debit slips above the total so the amount can’t be changed.

Don't sign a blank charge or debit slip.

Tear up copies and save your receipts to check against your monthly statements.

Cut up old cards — cutting through the account number — before you throw them away.

Open your monthly statements promptly and compare them to your receipts. Report mistakes or discrepancies as soon as possible.

Carry only the cards you'll need.

For ATM or Debit Cards Don't carry your PIN in your wallet, purse, or pocket — or write it on your card. Commit it to memory.

Never write your PIN on the outside of a deposit slip, an envelope, or other papers that could be lost or looked at.

Carefully check your transactions; the funds for this item will be quickly transferred out of your account.

Periodically check your account activity if you bank online. Compare the current balance and transactions on your statement to those you've recorded. Report any discrepancies to your card issuer immediately.

George Gilbert Cotner

Malcolm Lambert

George Gilbert Cotner was born February 26, 1941 in Stantonville, Tenn., the son of the late Theodore and Sara Artie Flatt Cotner.

Mr. Cotner worked as a janitor for many years at the Adamsville City Hall and Dr. Jim Yancey’s office.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Adamsville, Tenn.

George was known in Adamsville and surrounding communities because he was the man who rode the bicycle with the flags on it and his hat always had feathers. He loved to ride his bicycle and rode for many years. He enjoyed hunting for rocks and arrowheads.

George was a friendly and outgoing person who loved to kid around with people. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Cotner departed this life on December 16, 2013 in Adamsville, Tennessee at the age of 72 years, 9 months, 20 days. He is survived by two brothers, Johnny Cotner and wife Rose of Adamsville, Tenn., James Lee Cotner and wife Betty of Bethel Springs, Tenn.; two sisters, Artie Jane Smith of Adamsville, Tenn., Ruby Jean Cotner of Adamsville, Tenn.; nieces and nephews, Pam Hardy, Jeanie Burleson, Johnny L. Cotner, Jamie Cotner, Davy Cotner, Jeff Cotner, Ruby Jewel Lynn, Delois Evans and Allen Lee Smith; host of extended family and friends.

Services were held on December 19, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Adamsville in Adamsville, Tennessee, with Herb Adams officiating. Burial followed in the Adamsville Cemetery at Adamsville, Tennessee.

Malcolm Lambert was born June 12, 1932 in Chester County, Tenn., the son of the late William Royce and Frankie Wilma Russom Lambert.

He was married to Dottie Mae Ferguson Lambert for 40 years, she passed away on July 25, 1995. On February 21, 1998, he married Marie Kirk Long.

Mr. Lambert was a machinist for Brown Shoe Company for 37 years. He was a member of the Cypress Tank Church Of Christ in Selmer, Tennessee, loved Bluegrass music, mowing the lawn, bush hogging and eating fried or baked chicken.

Mr. Lambert departed this life on December 16, 2013 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 81 years, 6 months, 4 days. He is survived by his wife Marie Lambert of Selmer, Tenn.; a daughter, Liz Gray and husband Bill of Selmer, Tenn.; four sons, Randy Lambert and wife Susie of Selmer, Tenn., Tony Lambert of Selmer, Tenn., Keith Lambert of Selmer, Tenn., Ron Long of Locust Gap, PA; four sisters, Clara Rose Johnson of Selmer, Tenn., Wilma Jo Cox of Selmer, TN, Dale Rowsey Foster and husband Herman of Jackson, Tenn., Carolyn Ashe and husband Gerald of Selmer, Tenn.; two brothers, Jack Lambert and wife Christine of Selmer, Tenn., Frank Lambert and wife Glenda of Adamsville, Tenn.; twelve grandchildren, Chris Gray, Dan Gray, Miranda Lambert, Jessica Lambert, Dustin Lambert, Anthony Lambert, Brandon Lambert, Samantha Lambert, Keisha Lambert, Ron Long II, Jonathan Long, Amanda Miller; 15 great grandchildren; host of extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lambert was preceded in death by a son, Tracy Lambert; a daughter, Kathy Lewis; a brother, Jimmy Lambert; a sister, Joan Lambert.

Services were held on December 19, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with Dr. Brian Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the Sulphur Springs Cemetery at Selmer, Tennessee.

Willie Atwell Gray Willie Atwell Gray was born April 22, 1919 in Michie, Tenn., the son of the late Odem and Ida Voyles Gray. He was united in marriage to Eva Loraine Wardlow on April 27, 1940. Mrs. Gray preceded him in death on January 16, 2004.

Mr. Gray was a concrete finisher.

He was a member of the Michie Church of God of Prophecy in Michie, Tennessee. Some of his favorite pastimes were working in his garden and spending time with his family and friends.

Mr. Gray departed this life on December 8, 2013 in Michie, Tennessee at the age of 94 years, 7 months, 16 days.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Baker and husband David of Michie, Tenn.; a son, Freddie Gray and wife Janice; seven grandchildren, Lynn Baker and wife Connie, Linda Crane and husband John, Terry Baker, Tony Baker and wife Angie, Shawn Gray, Johnathan Gray and wife Briana, Brooke Smith and husband Josh; ten great grandchildren, Jed Baker and wife Lainie, Jill Burks and husband Tim, Chuck Durbin, Jake Baker, Gage Baker, Annabelle Gray, Griffin Gray, Courtney Gray, Savannah Gray, Brayden Smith; six great great grandchildren, Aiden Crider, Asa Baker, Coley Bell Baker, Avery Burks, Haddie Mae Burks, Ruthie Burks; and special friends Julianne Bachuss, Hunter Smith, and Ashtyn Smith.

Billy Joe King Billy Joe King was born June 8, 1959 in Selmer, Tenn., the son of the late Alva Everett and Alline Leatherwood King.

He was united in marriage to Tina Baggett on April 28, 1981. Mr. King was a truck driver. He was Baptist in faith.

Some of his favorite pastimes were; fishing, riding fourwheelers, working on chainsaws, watching westerns, spending time with his grandchildren family and friends.

Mr. King departed this life on December 19, 2013 in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 54 years, 6 months, 11 days. He is survived by his wife Tina (Baggett) King of Morris Chapel, Tenn.; a daughter, Patricia McCullar and husband Danny of Bethel Springs, Tenn.; a son, Joseph Alva King of Savannah, Tenn.; three brothers, Elverett King of Selmer, Tenn., Charlie King of Selmer, Tenn., Johnny King of Tupelo, MS; a sister, Marilyn Battles of Selmer, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Bryson Cade King, Brendon Cole King, Bailey Chance King all of Savannah Tenn., William Tyler Austin of Bethel Springs, Tenn., Evan Ray McBride of Morris Chapel, Tenn., and Kyle Wayne McBride of Bethel Springs, Tenn.

Rhonda Kaye Raines Rhonda Kaye Raines of Michie, Tenn., was born January 20, 1963 in Memphis, Tenn., the daughter of Junior Raines and the late Shirley K. Raines.

Miss Raines was Catholic in faith and departed this life on December 12, 2013 in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 50 years, 10 months, 22 days.

She is survived by a son, Jeremy Mize of San Diego, CA; her father, Junior Ranies of Michie, Tenn.; her grandmother, Nell Howard of Michie, Tenn.; a brother, Terry Raines of Olive Branch, MS; and a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Visitation was held on December 22, 2013 from 1 p.m. until the funeral service at 2 p.m. all held at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, Steve Webb officiated. Burial followed in the Lebanon Cemetery at Michie, Tennessee.

Bonnie Lee Wright Plunk Bonnie Lee Wright Plunk, age 93, of Henderson, Tenn., passed away December 22, 2013 at the Henderson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born December 11, 1920 in Enville, Tenn., the daughter of the late Willie Rueben and Minnie Lessie Dees Wright. She attended school in Enville.

She was united in marriage to Henry Howard Plunk on December 18, 1943. Mr. Plunk preceded her in death in August , 1977. She loved being with people, playing Rook, Bunko and Dominoes. She was a member of Maggie Jones Methodist Church but also attended the Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church for many years.

She is survived by: five daughters, Blondell Powers and husband Virgil of Southhaven, MS, Minnie Davis and husband Larry of Henderson, Tenn., Allie Henry and husband Dennis of Bethel Springs, Tenn., Dorothy Redden and husband Mike of Henderson, Tenn., Mary Jane Plunk of Pinson, Tenn.; two sons, David Plunk and wife Lorene of Finger, Tenn., M.E. Plunk and wife Debbie of Finger, Tenn.; a sister, Betty Jean Moore of Selmer, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs.Plunk was preceded in death by two sons, Isaac Plunk, Buford Plunk; two sisters, Maggie Nash, Edna Smith; a brother, Manley Wright; two grandchildren, Dusty Plunk, Josh Plunk.

As a mother, no matter where your children go or what they do in this life, there is a love you have that is more powerful than anything you can describe.

When I think of this love I think of Jesus dying on the Cross. I picture Mary and how her heart broke when her baby boy was crucified, how He was blameless and yet He had to go through that so we could be forgiven for our sins. She had to let Him go because it was all part of a bigger plan. I wish, Molly, each time I sin I would stop and think about not only what Jesus did for me, but how Mary must feel. Maybe then I would stop and turn away. I am so unworthy of this forgiveness, but yet He did this for me. Molly, I know you are there with Him and Mamo. I promise to try to stop each time I start to sin and remember I will be there with you some day, and until then I will also remember the love you gave and still send me today. Happy 20th birthday.

William Ray Price William Ray Price was born October 27, 1945 in Corinth, Miss., the son of the late Robert Grady and Mary Ellen Norcross Price.

Mr. Price was a brick mason. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Michie, Tennessee. Some of his favorite pastimes were playing his guitar, sight seeing, and spending time with his dog Precious.

Mr. Price departed this life on December 19, 2013 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 68 years, 1 month, 22 days.

He is survived by a sister, Susan Price of Michie, Tenn.; three close nephews Steven Price, Jackson Price, and Cody Butler along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Price was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Wayne Price, Robert Steven Price; two sisters, Jean Carter, and Dorothy Lee Miliam.

I’ve been told that if you want to play intensely competitive dominos – and you happen to be a fella – the place to hone your skills would be the Domino Hall behind Main Street. Well, being that I’m not a fella, nor a domino player, my eye witness report for some good time domino playing comes from across town at the Senior Citizen Center.

The dominoes clink often on more than one table and just because it’s a mixture of friends doesn’t seem to stop the action from being competitive. There’s a lot of good ribbing going on when the little beads on one scorer move more quickly than the beads for the opposing team. And there does seem to be an inordinate amount of joy when someone gets caught with a high-count tile after a comrade plays the last tile in his or her hand. It’s a game where adding up by five’s seems important and it sure doesn’t seem as complicated as bridge – and often there are these wonderful scents wafting out from the kitchen where a meal is being prepared. So, like I said, I don’t know what the Domino Hall has to offer, but I’m thinking you might really enjoy coming down to the Center to join in the fun.

The Senior Center started years ago when Shorty Major’s dad retired from his job with the Department of Human Services and saw the great need for older folk to gather for a good time. Friends and neighbors could get together more often if a bus could pick them all up and bring them

come tax assistance to foot care to training on computers to lobbying our governmental representatives – not to mention the meals and home visits. Help for nutritional needs, utility assistance, and insurance coverage are all possibilities. It’s a mission that can only be accomplished through the efforts of volunteers, and Cindy would love to hear from you if you’re trying to figure out what to do with some extra daylight time. In fact, if you’ve got skills that could initiate a new program, that would be just dandy, too! You may quickly find, as Cindy does, the joy of helping a group of people who will become “just like family” to you. Give her a call and explore the possibilities.

It may sound as if all the action takes place right there on Park Avenue, but that’s far from the case. This group of folk are mighty good at globe hopping and seeing the great United States. This fall they went to New England and just recently took a jaunt over to the Clinton Library in Little Rock. There may even be an international trip coming up this spring. They’ve gone to the Holy Land, lots of places in Europe, over to Australia – well, you get the idea. So you might want to keep a check on their plans for 2014. Or you might want to be one of those entering competition for Ms. Senior Tennessee in April because if you win, you can go on to the national competition where the winner will be setting her own itinerary for travel. After all, Ms. Senior Tennessee in 2013 won Ms. Senior America 2013 so it could happen again! Keep in mind you’ve got to have a talent for something more than dominoes though—so begin the voice or dance lessons pretty soon if you’re going in that direction.

to a central location. Our Adamsville Senior Center was designed and built to accommodate the kinds of programs we still have. Thinking of our seniors didn’t just come about when some old building needed to be repurposed.

Nope, there’s been an intention to serve seniors from the very beginning. It was chartered in 1965 as the first center in McNairy County and has served as a model for the ones that followed. It’s rich in history and that history can’t even begin to be told without some very familiar names in the history of Adamsville popping up.

And what do you think? The director, Mrs. Cindy Thrasher believes her role in this service has been the basic calling for her life. She’s been with the Center for 36 years now and manages a great deal of offerings and programs. You could say it’s her mission field as she serves others and assures continued funding for the program to stay in place. You see, the Center is a nonprofit organization that depends upon private donations, federal funding through the Older American Act, United Way contributions, and assistance from both the county and city. Each year, the Center is audited to comply with the guidelines of funding organizations, as well as being accountable to the Tennessee Commission on Aging. The Board of Directors meets quarterly throughout the year to assure the maximum benefits can be derived from the available dollars. So, you can see this group takes their business seriously. And as a result, they have served over 3,000 individuals in the last fiscal year. Three thousand non-duplicated individuals!

The holidays are a relaxed time for families and friends to spend time together, but before children are out of school for the holidays and tiny friends and relatives come to visit, take some time to poison proof your home.

One of the most important poison prevention tips is to make sure that alcoholic drinks and products that contain alcohol are placed out of a child’s reach. This is especially important at parties and holiday gatherings when children can find cups containing leftover alcohol within their reach.

“Alcohol – beer, wine, mixed drinks, and even facial cleaners, mouthwash and baking extracts – can make children sleepy and sick, and in large quantities can even be deadly,” said Donna Seger, M.D., professor of Clinical Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and medical director of the Tennessee Poison Center.

Seger said the holidays are also a good time to familiarize yourself with what festive plants and holiday decorating items can be poisonous for children and pets.

Poinsettias have gotten a bad rap, but they’re

only mildly toxic when ingested. Other plants and products found around the home during the holidays can be far more dangerous, she said.

“Contact with many substances that are considered poisonous can result in local irritation, nausea and vomiting, seizures, damage to the heart and even death,” Seger said. “It’s wise to take a look around your home before small children arrive and be safe rather than sorry.”

Seger offered the following poison prevention tips: • Keep alcohol, including baking extracts, out of

reach of children.

• Color additives used in fireplace fires are toxic and should be stored out of reach.

• Artificial snow looks beautiful, but can be harmful if inhaled. Use it in a well-ventilated place.

• Although the poinsettia and Christmas cactus are not poisonous, mistletoe berries, holly berries (more than five) and Jerusalem cherry can be. If they are used in decorating, make sure children and pets cannot reach them.

Mary Wintjen Mary Wintjen, of Adamsville, was born in Decaturville, Tennessee on June 13, 1951, the daughter of the late J. C. and Delta Inman Keymon.

On April 27, 1977 she was united in marriage to Jerrold L. Wintjen, who preceded his wife in death on February 9, 2002.

Mary lived in McNairy County most of her life.

She enjoyed facebooking, debating, Bible study, singing and most of all she loved being a grandma. Mary was an inspector for Praxis in Savannah.

She departed this life on December 14, 2013 in Jackson, Tennessee at the age of 62 years, 6 months and 1 day.

She is survived by her two daughters, Tracy Wintjen Swift and husband, Chris, of Savannah, Tennessee and Jerrie Morris and husband, Jason, of Adamsville, Tennessee five grandchildren, Gabby Morris, Christian Swift, Austyn Morris, Jordan Morris and Maddie Swift two brothers, David Keymon and his wife Marsha and Timmy Keymon, all of Savannah, Tennessee four sisters, Dottie Wilkey of Braidwood, Illinois, Sue Wilczak and her husband Mike of Braidwood, Illinois, Sandy McFarland and her husband Vernon of Galveston, Indiana and Sharon Holsapple of Coal City, Illinois.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Glynn (Buddy) Keymon. Services will be held on December 18, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah, Tennessee, with Philip Meek, Jeff Urban, Paul Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in the Graham Cemetery at Savannah, Tennessee.

I watched the patients this week share in the Christmas season of opening presents, I noticed one lady who has really touched my life. So here is our story: When I was in high school at Bethel Springs, I had a great friend, whose name was Vickie Sullivan. At the time, she was Vickie Surratt and her mother was Mary Surratt. Mrs. Mary has come to bless our home with her presence, and I really enjoy just being around her.

She always has a smile for everyone she meets and a kind word for everyone who steps in her room. There is a history to Mrs. Mary and me. I will tell you about that later in the story.

Mrs. Mary’s name was Mary Hopkins. She has two children, Vickie and Mike; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She worked at several places in the area, but a lot of her life was spent doing volunteer work at the local hospital as a Pink Lady. Vickie told me she has crocheted lots of gifts for her friends and family and up to a few months ago, she was busy quilting, another craft she loves. Mrs. Surratt is also a neighbor of mine as well as her daughter, Vickie. Vickie’s son, Greg, and my daughter graduated high school together and were always good friends. It is funny to me how things came back around.

I have a big back yard and always made sure there were no golf balls in my yard before I started to mow.

Greg loved to use my yard as a golf course. Life has a

lot of ups and downs but, I for one, felt that we are all blessed this holiday season.

Now, for the rest of the story. I do not like tea of any kind and never have. A lot of people tell me you cannot be a southern girl and not drink tea. Well, yes I can. Most people look at me kind of strange when I tell them I don’t drink tea. Not Mrs. Mary. One day I went home with Vickie for lunch and Mrs. Mary asked what I would like to drink. I said anything but tea. She said that is fine and to be honest, I don’t remember what I drank but she made sure I had something besides tea. She never forgot that and whenever I was in her home, there was always something for me to drink besides tea.

I had forgotten all about that, but not Mrs. Mary. I saw her a few months ago and she said, “Do you still not drink tea?” I laughed and said, “No, Mrs. Mary, I don’t.”I had forgotten all about the dinner and the deal with the tea but she had not. Made me very humble and feel a little special that she had remembered that day and a little girl that did not like tea.

She is a very sweet and caring lady, who I enjoy talking with even if it’s just about tea. From all of the staff and patients at McNairy County Health Care Center, we hope you have a very Merry Christmas and thank you for your support this year to our home.

Kathy Oliver

Melvin Clyde Hines was born January 29, 1927 in Selmer, Tenn., the son of the late Andrew Jackson and Eva Ballard Hines.

He was united in marriage to Oletia Reed on September 4, 1958.

Mr. Hines was retired from ICG Railroad after 45 years of service. He enjoyed his family, golfing and fishing. He was a member of the Selmer Country Club and had served in the Army during WWII. Mr. Hines departed this life on December 20, 2013 in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 86.

He is survived by his wife, Oletia Reed Hines; a daughter, Julia Cummings, husband Phillip and their children, Joshua and Justin; a son, Michael Hines, wife Elizabeth and their children, Cecilia Hines and Sarah Christian, husband Richard; Carley Fritz and Erick Fritz, children of his deceased daughter, Michelle Fritz. Michelle passed away on October 4, 2013.

Visitation was held for Melvin Hines and Michelle Fritz, at 12 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013, until the memorial service at 1 p.m., all held at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer, Tenn.

Kathy Oliver was born May 13, 1959 in Selmer, Tenn., the daughter of the late Henry and Ruby Brown Watson.

She departed this life on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at her home in the Beauty Hill Community at the age of 54 years, 7 months, 9 days.

Kathy was united in marriage to Thomas R. Oliver on February 3, 1976. She was a member of Beauty Hill United Pentecostal Church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, baking desserts, sewing, and feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. Kathy was a very loving and strong willed woman. She was honest and caring while always speaking what was on her mind.

She is survived by her husband Thomas R. Oliver of Bethel Springs, Tenn.; a daughter, Cassie Paxton and husband Doug of Adamsville, Tenn.; a son, Tommy Oliver and wife Melody of Selmer, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Logan Christopher, Alexandria Oliver, Talon Christopher, Makala Oliver, Gunner Harrell, Tevin Oliver; four sisters, Martha Rippie, Mary Willis, Dorothy Watson, Rachael English; a brother, Junior Watson. A host of extended family and friends.

Services were held on December 23, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Beauty Hill United Pentecostal Church in Bethel Springs, Tennessee, with Bro. Jonathan Tubbs officiating. Burial followed in the Beauty Hill Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Logan Christopher, Randall Butler, Clay Robert McCullar, Josh Tegethoff, Stanley Stewart, Mark Oliver. Honorary were George Root and Robert Mullins. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer in charge of arrangements.

Cletus E. Cooksey Cletus E. Cooksey of Adamsville, Tenn., was born July 3, 1927, the son of the late Samuel Lacy Franklin Cooksey and Jessie Hollingsworth Cooksey. Mr. Cooksey departed this life on December 21, 2013 in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 86 years, 5 months, 18 days.

He was united in marriage to Faye M. Smith on November 20, 1948. Mrs. Cooksey preceded him in death on September 26, 2005. He was a Veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by a daughter, Lee Dale Henley of Jackson, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Angela Blankenship, Tommy Henley, Jr., Anthony Cooksey, Jon Jon Cooksey; four great grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.

In addition to his wife, parents, and siblings, Mr. Cooksey was preceded in death by two sons, Donnie T. Cooksey and Teddy Wayne Cooksey.

Services were held on December 23, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Adamsville in Adamsville, Tennessee, with Eugene Davis officiating.

Lillie Ann Hunt Hayslett Lillie Ann Hunt Hayslett was born April 14, 1944 to John E. and Rosie Lee Brown Hunt in Corinth, MS. She departed this life on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tenn.

Preceding her in death were her husband, George Franklin Hayslett, Sr,; maternal grandparents, Solon Brown and Annie Lee Jenkins; two great grandsons, Steven Joshua Westbrooks and Elisha Jerome Westbrooks.

Mrs. Hayslett confessed her love for Christ at an early age and in 1995 she was baptized in Jesus name and came up out of the water speaking in tongues as the Spirit of the Holy Ghost gave the utterance and singing “If I Don’t Wake Up In The Morning Everything Will Be Alright”, and “I Got My Ticket Lord”. She was a member of New Jerusalem Faith Apostolic Church in Selmer.

She leaves many to mourn her passing, her loving and devoted mother Rosie Lee Brown Mason and stepfather Fred Lou Mason; a brother, James Hunt; her children, George Hayslett, Jr., Walter Hayslett, Patricia (Steve) Westbrooks, and Thomas Hayslett; a God daughter, Lynn Trice, all of Selmer; grandchildren, Steven (Sandra) Westbrooks, of Selmer, Ashley (Eric) Cruz, of Pickwick Dam, TN, Keleshia Amos, Markita Cole, B. J. Strayhorn, of Jackson, TN, and Thomas “TJ” Patterson of Pickwick Dam. She is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends. Her favorite saying was “Why worry when you can pray”.

Homegoing celebration services were held on December 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. at New Jerusalem Faith Apostolic Church in Selmer, Tennessee, with Bishop Ferdinand Gant officiating. Burial followed in the Prospect Cemetery at Selmer, Tennessee.

Lady Bobcats complete season sweep

The McNairy Central Bobcats made the short trip down Highway 64, as they took on the Adamsville Cardinals for the second time this season. The Lady Bobcats were able to complete the season sweep, but the Bobcats were not so successful.

The Lady Bobcats started the game with all the momentum, coming off the huge win earlier in the season, and they never let off the gas against the Lady Cards.

McNairy got off to an early run and the Adamsville defense had problems slowing the Lady Cats down.

The Lady Cats were playing well on the defensive side as well, and after scoring 19 points, they were able to hold Adamsville scoreless until late in the first quarter, giving up only four points then.

With their 15 point lead, the Lady Cats came out in the second quarter and kept the same intensity.

McNairy made it hard on the Lady Cards to even get the ball around the basket, and their offense stayed strong as well.

The Lady Bobcats were able to hold the Lady Cardinals to eight points in the second quarter while scoring 18 of their own, extending their lead over the Cardinals.

Once the second half was underway, Mallorie Sweat and the Lady Bobcats continued to play well, and the Lady Cardinals did not have an answer.

Once again, the Lady Cards were held to only eight points in the quarter, and the Lady Bobcats continued to build their lead as they posted another 18 points.

In the fourth quarter, the game began to slow down as both teams began to get their young players some time on the court.

The Lady Bobcats’ offense slowed down, only scoring four points in the final quarter, but their defense stayed strong as they held the Lady Cards scoreless, and came away with the huge rivalry win.

The Cardinals made the trip to Jackson, Tenn. for a district contest against the Trinity Christian Lions.

The Lady Cardinals got the night going against the Lady Lions, and had a tough time getting any momentum going during the entire game.

After coming off of the loss to in-county rival McNairy Central, the Lady Cards were looking to get things back on track.

They improved their game offensively against the Lions, scoring 46 total points, but the Lady Lions were able to stay on top.

The Lady Cards fought hard, but they were not able to slow the Lady Lions down, and they fell in their last district contest before the Christmas break.

The Cardinals came out ready to play against the Lions, and were able to take an early first quarter lead.

Adamsville jumped out early and were able to find their rhythm in the first quarter as they were able to put 13 points on the board while holding the Lions to only 12.

Led by Tucker Campbell, who had a double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds, the Cardinals came out in the second quarter and kept the pressure on the Lions.

Adamsville’s defense played well, and in the second quarter they only allowed the Lions to put 11 points on the board.

After taking a one point lead in the first, the Cards were able to put up 17 points in the second to extend their lead to seven points going into halftime on the road.

Beginning the second half, the Cards came out and looked to hold on to their lead.

The Lions were able to surge on offense, but the Cardinals’ defense was able to slow them down.

On offense, the Cards were able to hang with the Lions shot for shot, and both teams ended the quarter by scoring 16 points.

Adamsville still held on to their lead going into the fourth quarter and looked to hang on for the big district win.

The fourth quarter was the only time during the game that the Lions were able to outscore the Cardinals, but they were not able to overcome the Cardinals’ lead.

Adamsville scored 19 points in the fourth quarter and was able to hang on for the huge road win.

The Lady Bobcats looked to continue their good play and build momentum moving into the Christmas break.

The Lady Bobcats squared off with the Lady Tigers, and it was a close game in the beginning.

Both teams came out ready to play, and neither team was able to pull away in the first quarter.

McNairy was able to play well on defense and slow the Lady Tigers down, but their offense was a little slow to get started, and the game was tied after the first quarter at 9-9.

Once the second quarter got started, Porsha Chappell and the Lady Bobcats got their offense rolling.

The Lady Bobcats were able to explode for 15 points while holding the Lady Tigers to only nine, building their first lead before going into half time.

After the half, the Lady Bobcats came out and continued their good play. With help from Margie Coleman, Mallorie Sweat and a host of other Lady Bobcats, McNairy was able to extend their lead by scoring 15 more points and holding the Lady Tigers to seven.

Even though the Lady Bobcats held a bit of a comfortable lead, they never let up on their intensity.

McNairy kept their foot on the gas in the fourth quarter, not only holding on for the win but extending their lead in the process.

The Lady Cats were able to get several players on the floor, and were able to get momentum, moving forward in their season looking towards their district schedule.

The Bobcats took the floor next, and looked to go off the momentum of the Lady Cats’ win.

McNairy central got off to a strong start on the defensive side of the ball, and the game began to somewhat mirror the girls’ game before.

Both teams battled to establish their own style of play, and at the end of the first quarter, just as in the girls’ game, the score was tied 9-9.

Also like the girls, the Bobcats came out in the second quarter and executed their offense, gaining the lead over the Tigers.

With Reggie McNeal leading the way for the Bobcats, McNairy was able to score 13 points while holding the Tigers to nine and took the lead into the locker room at halftime.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, they were not able to keep the play up in the second half.

Although the defense continued to play well, the Bobcats’ offense was having trouble scoring points.

The Bobcats were held to only seven points in the third quarter, and the Tigers were able to take the lead going into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter of play, the Bobcats fought and battled their way back, but were still held to only 10 points.

McNairy played strong defense, but it was not enough to slow the Tigers down.

The Bobcats battled hard but would fall to the Tigers by seven points.

The Bobcats are looking to go into the Christmas break and get their offense into a rhythm before they get into their district schedule.

Lady Vols Bus Trip West Tennessee Sports Bus Charters will be making a trip to Nashville to see the Lady Vols take on Vanderbilt. The game will be on Sunday, January 12. The costs will be $53 each or $106 for a couple. This will include tickets, bus fare and a tip for the driver.

The bus will be leaving Kmart in Jackson Tenn. at noon, and will return to Jackson after a dinner stop at O’Charlies in Dickson. There are 54 seats available and the deadline is December 27. Inevitably distracted by work and chores, it is highly likely you may have missed MLB’s offseason moves, some of which have occurred seemingly under your nose. Not to worry, though—the Fantasy Factory has got a handy list of the Top 20 Moves You May Have Missed for 2013...no tip necessary. However thorough, omissions abide, and one deal in particular was omitted from the list - the blockbuster which moved two All-Stars between Detroit and Texas - will be further examined in next week’s edition.

(Again, not to fear—this list disqualifies Robinson Cano to the Mariners and the exploits of the Arizona Diamondbacks, already covered in weeks past.)

Without further ado, the Top 20 Moves You May Have Missed for 2013.

1. Already drawing comparisons to Anakin Skywalker betraying the Jedi Order and joining the Galactic Empire, Jacoby Ellsbury left the Major League system he’s called home for his entire eight year career for the other half of the greatest rivalry in sports, the New York Yankees. Yankees fans, currently rubbing their hands together menacingly while chuckling at their betrayed opponents, will enjoy the lifetime .297 hitter, whose 2013 campaign saw 92 runs, 53 runs batted in, and a sinister 52 steals. The $153 million/7 year contract is a large one, but the blow is eased from the money saved by not signing second baseman Robinson Cano.

2. Not ONLY the money saved from losing Robinson Cano, but also the money saved from passing on the cross-town rival Mets’ newest acquisition, 32 year old outfielder Curtis Granderson, who signed a $60 million/4 year deal on December 9th. Granderson, who legitimately smashed in 2011, hopes to re-achieve the 41 home runs, 119 runs batted in, and 25 steals of said season.

3. The Yankees continued their spending spree by inking outfielder Carlos Beltran, 36, having played for the last 2 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, to a $45 million/3 year contract. Beltran looks to start regularly in a corner outfield spot, while occasionally manning the rotating door labelled “Designated Hitter” for the Pinstripes.

4. In what some may consider a shocker, Detroit traded Doug Fister, whose 2013 campaign saw a 3.67 ERA, 208 innings pitched, and 159 strikeouts to the Nationals of Washington for a trio of prospects headed by lefty pitcher Robbie Ray. The Tigers inherit Ray, (whose minor league performance draws comparisons to fellow Tiger Max Scherzer), utility infielder Steve Lombardozzi, and left handed pitcher Ian Krol.

5. Money continued to be no object for the Yankees, as they signed former Atlanta Braves catcher 29 year old Brian McCann at $85 million/five years to man home plate for the Pinstripes. New York gains a career .277 hitter with 176 home runs and 661 RBI, a noted mind for the game, and an energetic glue for a shaky pitching staff.

6. The World Series Champion Boston Red Sox wasted little time in resigning first baseman Mike Napoli to a $32 million/2 year deal on December 12. Napoli, a career .259 hitter, will rejoin his championship comrades in red stockings in their defense campaign.

7. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed the outspoken pop culture spectacle Brian Wilson on December 7th. The right handed Wilson, who claims to be “half man, half amazing, half beard” (claims substantiated) signed a $10 million/1 year agreement to relieve for the Dodgers. His role, defined as of December 20th as Set-Up, may change as the year progresses. Dodgers Closer Kenley Jansen has long battled consistency issues amidst flashes of greatness as a late-innings reliever. Regardless of titles, the Dodgers have the late innings locked with Wilson and Jansen.

8. The Giants of San Francisco signed free agent outfielder Michael Morse to a $6 million/1 year deal last Tuesday, filling a void in their outfield. While with the Mariners and the Nationals, Morse showed flashes of brilliance, particularly with his natural home run swing.

9. Justin Morneau signed a $14 million /2 year deal with the Colorado Rockies on December 13th. Moreneau, a first baseman by trade, suffered from numerous injuries over the last 3 years in Minnesota, where he and catcher Joe Mauer dominated the NL’s batting categories as a duo in 2008. The Rockies hope Moreneau regains a little of that thunder in the upcoming 2014 campaign.

10. The Minnesota Twins were the first to pounce on the weak starting pitching market of the 2013 offseason by signing righty Ricky Nolasco to a $49 million/4 year deal. Nolasco, 31, formerly of the Cubs, Marlins, and Dodgers, brings a career 4.37 ERA to anchor a questionable staff of youngsters and fledgling vets.

11. The Boston Red Sox lost catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the Miami Marlins and then signed A.J. Pierzynski, formerly of the Rangers, as a starting backstop. Salty’s 2013 campaign saw a .273 average with 14 home runs and 65 runs batted in versus the .272 average, 17 home runs and 70 RBI of Pierzynski, who will join the defending champions. Saltalamacchia, 29, one of only a few youthful players playing amidst the technicolor nonsense at Tropicana Field, is slated to start and bat in the middle of the order for the Fish.

12. The Seattle Mariners signed first baseman Corey Hart, formerly of the Milwaukee Brewers, to a $6 million/1 year deal, seemingly as a good measure of lineup protection for their $240 million investment at second, Robinson Cano.

13. The second trade on our list sees the Baltimore Orioles deal closer Jim Johnson to the Oakland Athletics for infielder Jemile Weeks. Johnson, a lights-out closer in 2012, suffered minor setback in 2013, but looks to regain form for the A’s. Weeks, the younger brother of Brewers’ second baseman Rickie, will look to crack the Major League team and land a starting job in their shaky middle infield.

14. Lightning struck again on December 7th as the Yankees characteristically continued to cascade cash, this time $16 million/1 year to the 38 year old righty starter Hiroki Kuroda. Kuroda rejoins the staff in a move to delight Yankees fans—Kuroda anchored the rotation in a year filled with injury from veteran Andy Pettite and the unusually inconsistent ace CC Sabathia.

15. Aging slugger Paul Konerko, 37, signed a one-year deal at $2.5 million to rejoin the Chicago White Sox for a 15th season together on the South Side. Slated at DH, Konerko will likely hit 15+ home runs, continuing his slow slump from greatness at first base.

16. Bartolo Colon signed for $20 million/2 years with the New York Mets. Colon, 40, a right handed starting pitcher, experienced a bit of a career renaissance in Oakland last season, where he went 18-6 with a 2.65 earned run average.

17. The World Champion Red Sox signed a closer in former Cardinals Righty Edward Mujica. Mujica, the closer to be in Boston, who had a campaign which featured 37 saves and a 2.78 earned run average in 2013, figures to do well at Fenway with the defending cham1070 Gin Rd. • Michie • (662) 415-5370 pions.

18. Joe Nathan, former closer in Texas and Minnesota, inked a $20 million/2 year deal to man the ninth inning in Motown for the Tigers. Detroit gains a closer with 80 saves over the last 2 seasons for the Rangers.

19. Right hander Joba Chamberlain, former golden boy of the New York Yankees farm systems, plagued (literally) by injury, expectation, and the occasional swarm of insects for years in the Big Apple, signed a $2.5 million/1 year deal as a relief pitcher for the Detroit Tigers in hopes of a Motor City resurgence.

20. The Cleveland Indians round out our list by signing right handed relief pitcher John Axford, for• Summer Sausage • Bologna merly of the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardito a $4.5 million/1 year agreement. Titans Football The Tennessee Titans got a big win this past Sunday against their division rival, the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Titans fell to the Jags earlier this season, which was Jacksonville’s first win of the season. In the second contest, the Titans fell behind early, only putting up six points in the first half, while the Jags were able to put up 13. Once the second half got underway, the Titans turned things around, holding the Jags to only a field goal while scoring two touchdowns of their own. The Titans have been eliminated from this year’s playoffs but continue to play hard and work to get better.

The Bobcats traveled to Alcorn Central to take on the Golden Bears

The McNairy Central Bobcats made the trip to Corinth, Miss. to take on the Alcorn Central Golden Bears. The Lady Bobcats came home with the victory, while the Bobcats were not as fortunate.

The Lady Bobcats, who were coming off a big win against Hardin County, got off to a slow start against the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bobcats were only able to put eight points on the board in the first quarter, but they were able to hold the Lady Bears to nine.

Once the second quarter got underway, the Lady Bobcats exploded on offense. Led by Porsha Chappell and her 19 points, the Lady Bobcats were able to put up 22 in the second quarter, while holding the Lady Bears to only four points.

The Bobcats took the 30-13 lead into halftime and never looked back.

Coming out of the half, the Lady Bobcats were able to continue playing well on defense, only allowing the Lady Bears to put 12 points on the board.

Offensively, the Lady Cats stayed in their rhythm and were able to extend their lead by adding 16 points of their own.

The Lady Cats carried their big lead into the fourth quarter, and looked to put the final nail in the Lady Bears coffin.

McNairy extended their lead in the fourth scoring 18 points while only allowing the Lady Bears to put up 14 and they went home with the dominating win. “It was good to get back-to-back wins over two good teams in Hardin County and Alcorn Central to end the first half of the season,� said head coach Jerry Lott. “ Porsha Chappell had 19 points in both games, and has been playing really good defense.�

The Bobcats got off to a slow start against the Golden Bears, and were only able to score four points in the first quarter.

The Bobcat defense was not able to slow down the Bears, and they fell into a hole early in the contest.

After the first quarter, the Bobcats were down 22-4 and had a tough task ahead to make the comeback.

In the second quarter, the Bobcats found rhythm on the offensive side and stepped up on defense as well.

The Bobcats, led by Terrell Harris and Jonathan Nixon, exploded in the second quarter, scoring 21 points while holding the Bears to 16, cutting into the Bear lead before halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bobcat defense continued to play well as they limited the Bears to only 10 points.

However, the Bobcats were only able to score 11 points on their offensive end.

Still down, but slowly cutting into the Bear lead, the Bobcats came out in the fourth quarter and battled to take the lead.

Even though the Bobcats were able to once again outscore the Bears, it was only by one point and they could not close out the huge lead the Bears gained in the first quarter.

The Bobcats are hoping to get their troubles fixed during the Christmas break, and get the momentum rolling going into their district schedule after the break.

Selmer Middle School gets new scorers table

Pictured above with the new scorers’ table is Mark York, who designed and created the table Selmer Middle School now enjoys in the newly renovated gym. Last year, a new floor was added, then new bleachers, new chairs for players, new banners, and finally a new scorers’ table. Mark, who is the husband of girls’ basketball coach Robin York, worked on the project because he said “we needed a new scorers’ table.” He designed the table complete with ball possession lights to be used at all home basketball games. Mark York is definitely a fan of the game, along with daughters Kendall and Tori (who is a Lady Lion), and is always there to support his wife and the SMS team.

The Cardinals came out on the floor looking for revenge from their loss to the Bobcats earlier in the season.

Adamsville looked to change things up with the starting line-up, and that plan seemed to work in the beginning.

The game stayed close as the two teams ran the floor, but it was Terrell Harris and the Bobcats who were able to come out on top 15-13 after the first quarter.

During the second quarter, Adamsville turned up the pressure, determined to take the lead back before the half.

Led by Tucker Campbell and Dakorea Dilworth, the Cardinals surged on offense and were able to outscore the Bobcats 15-12 in the second quarter, taking the one point lead into halftime.

Coming out of the half, the Cardinals were determined to extend their lead and secure the home win against their in county rivals.

Adamsville stepped up on defense during the third quarter, and they were able to hold the Bobcats to nine points while scor-

ing 17 of their own and extending their lead.

Although down, the Bobcats did not give up and continued to play hard. However, it was not enough. The Cardinals were able to have the best offensive quarter of the night in the fourth quarter, and they were able to extend their lead and take the win away from the Bobcats.

This is the second year that the teams have split the season series, and the rivalry seems to be fully alive once again in the county.

Both teams will now move their focus on to their Christmas tournaments and to their district schedules in the future.
