The McNairy Regional Alliance held their annual awards banquet last Saturday night. The event, which was held at the Pickwick Landing State Park, featured entertainment by professional comedian Larry Weaver and a wonderful three course dinner. This year was the first banquet in which local comedians were asked to step up to entertain at the event. Misti Gray, Derek Bodiford, Gregg Worthy and Luke DeLaVergne all took the stage and competed to be the first person named as a McNairy King or Queen of Comedy. During the show, audience members voted for their favorite comic, while learning who not to ask for a Christmas present. After the votes were tabulated, Gray was named the Queen of Comedy for the evening. A fire destroyed a home in nothwest McNairy County on the evening of Jan. 19 at 1860 Mt. Gilead Rd. near Bethel Springs. Volunteer firefighters from the Birdlock, Rose Creek and Bethel Springs fire departments worked to put out this blaze. The home, occupied by a family of four, was a total loss. No residents or firefighters were reported injured in that blaze. High winds drove several large fires last week. At least two local homes were destroyed by flames, and several other brush and forest fires were reported throughout the area.
Another fire occurred last Wednesday morning at 2400 Litt Wilson Road south of Finger. Smoke from this blaze rose hundreds of feet into the sky and could be seen from as far away as Selmer. Volunteer firefighters from Finger, McNairy and Bethel Springs fire departments worked in freezing temperatures to put out the flames. A family home along with several out buildings were destroyed in the fire. A forest fire in Hardeman County at the border with Chester and McNairy counties burned over several acres off of Rowland Lane last Friday. Flames from this fire burned the ground up to the skirting on a mobile home at 30 Rowland Ln. However, firefighters arrived in time to save the home from the flames. Tennessee Forestry worked with firefighters from Chester County and the Rose Creek Volunteer Fire Department to put out the blaze.

Tonya Knight, who along with husband Christoper Knight, was charged with the murder of Peggy Alexander, 71, of Savannah, Tenn. has had her bail reduced to $25,000 (which she met) and has been released, according to a spokesperson for the Hardin County Circuit Court Clerk’s office. Tonya’s bail had originally been set at $500,000 after the couple was arrested last year. She is originally from Adamsville. Christopher has been moved from the Hardin County Jail to a special needs facility in Nashville, Tenn. His bail was set at $1 million. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 6. On March 10, 2012 Christopher Knight called the police around 9 a.m. and reported that he found his mother dead in the home they shared, according to the Savannah Police Department. Knight told Sgt. Mark Mitchell of the Savannah police that the last time he saw his mother alive was around 11:30 p.m. the previous night. Knight also said it was not unusual for him not to see his mother for a day or two despite the fact that they live in the same house and their rooms were next to each other. Knight told Mitchell that he had left the house that morning, went to the bank to get some money and then ate breakfast at a fast food restaurant. He found his mother dead when he came back and called 911, staying on the line until Mitchell arrived. The Violent Crime Response Team from the Memphis Crime Lab responded and gathered evidence from the scene. TBI agents believe that Alexander was murdered between 1-2 a.m. on March 10. In the investigation, which was also assisted by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department, investigators found evidence they believe suggests a strained relationship between Alexander and the Knights. Alexander allegedly expressed a desire to move and change her will in regards to Christopher Knight, who admitted using his mother’s debit card to withdraw $60 from her account, Savannah Police Chief Donald Derr said. The Knights were arrested on March 11, Derr said. They were booked into the Hardin County Jail. The 24th Judicial District Attorney’s Office requested that the TBI assist in the investigation.
