Burks said Reynolds was quickly terminated after the incident came to light, and there was no question what would be done once SPD found out what had happened. “I have been made aware that Mr. Chris Reynolds has entered a plea of guilty in regards to the criminal charges he was facing in the Federal District Court of West Tennessee in the incident involving my cli-

Begin your Valentine’s celebration a day early this year, and join us for the Third Annual “For the Love of Literacy” dessert tasting this Thursday night at the Selmer Community Center. Featuring live music, dancing, door prizes and all of the candy, chocolates and baked sweets you can eat. It’s a wonderful evening for a price that is easy on your wallet. As a special treat, the entertainment for this year’s event will be internationally known musician Andy Avery, who played with and opened for such acts as Bon Jovi, KISS, Areosmith, White Snake, Joan Jett, Journey and Ted Nugent. Avery also sung for a band called Smokehouse, which was managed by Gene Simmons of KISS.

“I’m going to be doing a little bit of everything,” Avery said. “I’m going to do some impressions of singers...some country, classic rock and some contemporary Christian music.” Avery said he gave up the rock and roll lifestyle after finding Christ, and then began ministering through his music. Avery said that he moved to Lexington, Tenn. about six years ago to work at a local church there, and then was called to go out and play on the road again using music instead of sermons to spread the word of God. Local residents will know Avery for his work with Gregg Worthey at the 1st Christian Church in Selmer, as well as several other area churches where he performs. “I got to know (Avery)...when he was doing some sound work at the church,” Worthey said. “He performs several times a year

No more horsing around Guilty plea for Anthony Westbrooks, dismissal for daughter in separate cases By Christen Coulan and Jeff Whitten Independent Appeal Staff

Anthony C. Westbrooks, Sr., of 2441 Purdy Road in Selmer, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, a misdemeanor, in McNairy County General Sessions Court last Thursday, according to documents provided by the Court Clerk’s office. Under the plea agreement, Westbrooks was placed on diversion (probation) for 11 months and 29 days and shall not own a horse during this period. The horse that was the subject of this case will remain in a shelter and Westbrooks will pay court costs of about $280. In a related matter, charges of witness

coercion were dismissed against Mariah Westbrooks, Anthony’s daughter. Anthony was cited for animal cruelty on Nov. 1, 2013 for starving two horses in his yard. Deputy Danny Pinson of the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department responded to a complaint that two horses, belonging to Anthony, were malnourished. When Pinson arrived, he observed that one of the the horses was deceased and appeared to have been starved to death. The other had a large amount of ribs showing, as though it had little or no food. Westbrooks then pulled into the driveway and showed Pinson and Deputy Jason Gray a bale of hay he purchased for the surviving horse and said he planned to bury the deceased one.

Mariah was charged with witness coercion after Cheryl Dawson, the volunteer charged with caring for the horse that was seized from Anthony, said Mariah made threats against her on Facebook. According to the incident report from Pinson, a message purporting to be from Mariah, made charges of racism against Dawson and said she should worry about her house burning up with her animals in it. The report also said that Mariah used threatening language in the end of the message, stating that Dawson had something coming and that she could act on it. Mariah maintained that her father was
