At about 2 a.m. on April 3, most of us were sleeping. Luckily for Mikki and Chris Cox and their three children, Deputy Keenan Lamberth of the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department was not. That morning Lamberth was out doing his patrols for the department when he noticed something wasn’t right. During his patrol, Lamberth noticed a fire coming from the front of the Cox home on Falcon Road in Selmer and was able to get out of his car and wake the residents of the home by banging on the back doors. “I was out patrolling the Falcon area when I noticed from a distance what appeared to be a fire,” Lamberth said. “As I got closer, I could actually see that the house was on fire. I started banging on the doors... then I ran around back and started beating on the door and Mr. Cox opened the door.” Once Lamberth woke Chris Cox, they alerted the remaining family members and then the two grabbed a garden hose and began to put out the quickly spreading flames until firefighters arrived on the scene. “It was right at 2 a.m. and he was fiercely banging on the door,” Mikki Cox said. He was going around the house banging on the

windows then went around back to make sure we were awake.” She said that her husband then met Lamberth at the back door and learned that their home was on fire. Chris Cox said that his family has smoke detectors in most rooms of the home, but the fire which began on the family’s front porch did not trip the alarms until after Lamberth came to the door. “We were stepping outside when they started going off,” Cox said. Chris Cox said that he could see the fire from inside his home after he woke up and said that by the time he and Lamberth had gotten to the front of the home to put it out it was unbelievable how much it had grown. He said that the fire was particularly dangerous because of high winds which were fueling it. Even when smoke began to get to Lamberth who was fighting the fire, he kept at it. Chris Cox said he could see the officer coughing from the smoke but they were able to keep the water on the fire until the fire department showed up. “By then it was just smoldering and they took (Lamberth) and gave him some oxygen,” Chris Cox said. “God definitely had a hand in this one. I told him that he very well saved our lives.” In addition Chris Cox credits Lamberth’s
