Big Snow Or Big Bust? By Kitty Merrill
By the time you read this edition of The Independent on Wednesday, you’ll know if the Blizzard of 2015 was fierce or simply fizzled. On Monday morning, as Indy scrambled for an early deadline, folks across the East End were tying up their last minute blizzard ready chores and a light snow had already begun to fall. East Hampton’s ever-unflappable highway superintendent Steve Lynch was manning the phones himself Monday morning. “We’re all getting ready to go home and go to bed,” he joked. The department spent all day Sunday getting ready – checking
equipment, servicing trucks, and making sure outside contractors were on standby. Including in-house drivers and subcontractors, some of whom with their own trucks, the department has almost 60 drivers available to plow East Hampton’s 600 lane miles of road. Forecasts Sunday had the storm beginning by late afternoon Monday, but snow was already falling before the typical start of business that morning. “They lied,” Lynch said, “My next life I want to come back as a weatherman.” Between one and three inches were forecast to accumulate throughout the day on Monday, then ramp up to two to

four inches per hour as the evening wore on. Some forecasters predicted it would fall for 40 hours in the northeast. The department has 36 trucks stationed in East Hampton and Montauk. “The problem is when the guys get tired,” Lynch pointed out. Asked how long they can work without stopping he said, “I don’t even want to mention that.” Sunday night The Weather Channel reported the blizzard had been christened Winter Storm Juno, and had the potential to make history, with 28 million people under blizzard warnings and another 11 million on winter storm watch. By Monday morning over 3500 flights had already been cancelled. The experts said Juno might be a historic storm. “Every year I’ve been here, there’s been something historic,”

Town workers were gearing up on Monday for a repeat of a last winter’s blizzard conditions and deep snow.
Lynch noted. He grappled with Super Storm Sandy, then last year’s 13 blizzards. “We’re ready,” he said. In Southampton Town, Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor was expecting a washover on Dune Road east of the Tiana pavilion. “But that’s the least of my problems,” he said, explaining that he wants to concentrate on the mainland. Gregor had 50 trucks on the ready, plus eight payloaders, plus outside contractors on stand by to augment the fleet. “I’ll pull that trigger around eight or nine o’clock tonight,” he advised. Predicted wind was sure to mean drifts, especially in the “notorious spots” in Bridgehampton. Gregor planned to be out in the storm himself, driving his 1965 airport tarmac snow blower. “They’re pressing me into service,” he said. Later Monday morning Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst was expected to declare a snow emergency, Gregor related, which allows the department to service the 500 non-town maintained roads on top of the town’s 950 lane miles the department regularly services. Once a blizzard is in full effect, he said, “Our priority is to concentrate on main roads, so police, fire and ambulance can get from point A to point B.” It takes workers between seven and eight hours to handle a moderate snowstorm, Gregor explained. Juno may mean close to 20 hours for staff to ensure primary roads stay open. “We’ve been lucky,” Gregor said, speaking of the heretofore mild winter. “I pray every day for good weather and now it comes to slam us.” Gregor thanked the men and women of his department in advance for the time they’ll put in. “We’ll do our best,” he said. In mythology, Juno is known as the divine protectress of the community. On Monday morning, as Winter Storm Juno bore down, plenty of East Enders likely hoped for divine intervention from the goddess.

TESTOSTERONE
Ever yone is getting ready for the big storm so I’m sending in an old column I wrote years ago. Like everyone else I will be hiding under my bed like a little girl. That seems only fitting because this is a column about testosterone – something that’s been missing in me for many years.
Check the television commercials and some of those

fake doctor commercials on radio and testosterone is back. Testosterone is a big factor in the perpetual war that we fight against aging. There has been a great deal of success prescribing it to women. But here’s the inside story on the evils of testosterone and the truth about men: Men are contaminated from the day they reach puberty by testosterone, which causes them to do unspeakable things. Men think about sex all the time. They don’t just think about sex with their spouses when they think about sex. What I’m about to reveal is word-for-word true. A few years ago, I was driving with a male acquaintance of mine. The subject of marriage came up. My friend, who has been married for 12 years, revealed to me that lately he’s been feeling like he is “cheating.” “What do you mean you feel like you’ve been cheating?” I asked. “Well, ever since I got married to Jane (not her real name), whenever we have sex I fantasize that I’m with a woman who works in my office.”
REAL ESTATE
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
“You have fantasized about this other woman for 12 years?” “Yes,” he replied. “And now you finally feel unfaithful to your wife for doing that?” I asked incredulously. “No,” he answered. “The fact is that in the last few weeks, I’ve stopped fantasizing that I’m with the woman at my office and now I’m fantasizing that I’m with this beautiful woman who just joined my tennis club, and so I kinda feel that I’m being unfaithful to the woman I’ve been fantasizing about for the last 12 years.” If you’re a woman reading this, don’t make the mistake of asking a man if this is true. He will assure you that it is certainly not true of him. Don’t believe it. Men lie. On the positive side, testosterone increases sexual desire. On the negative side, men will do and say anything while they are under the influence of the testosterone poison. Here’s a joke that most women will tell you is the truth. It sums up the attitude of most men. Not me, mind you. Not politically correct, sensitive-toa-fault me. But, alas, just about every other man. It seems this couple occupied two separate beds in their large bedroom. One night they came home and both retired to their beds. The second the light was out, the husband, feeling a surge of testosterone, started his baby talk. “Lovey-dovey, hubby-wubby wants his little sweety-weety to come to his bed. Daddy-waddy
IN THE NEWS
wuvs his little sweety-weety.” As the woman left her bed and crossed the room she caught her foot on the rug and she fell flat on her face. The husband said, “Did loveydovey hurt her pretty little noseywosey? Hubby-wubby is sooooo soooo sorry. Lovekins, sweetheart, let me kiss that pretty noseywosey all better.” The woman went to her husband’s bed and they made passionate love. When they were finished, the husband immediately started to fall asleep so the woman climbed out of his bed and headed for her own bed. Once again, in the middle of the room, she caught her foot on the same spot on the rug and fell flat on her face. The husband lifted his head from his pillow and muttered, “Clumsy bitch.” Isn’t it about time that some smart pharmaceutical company came up with a testosterone modifier? A powder a woman could sneak into a man’s oatmeal to have him act like a lamb instead of an ass? Men have discovered Viagra and products like it and they brag and boast to each other about their new-found hardness. But do men really get it? No! They still don’t understand that it’s not about hardness – it’s about tenderness. Tenderness – something that all the pharmaceutical companies in the world can’t make and can’t sell. Old Store Equals New Housing By Kitty Merrill
Vacant and deteriorating for 15 years, the old Woolworth building on Main Street in Riverhead is refurbished, renovated, and ready to be home to residents of 19 new apartments, a fitness center, bagel shop and florist. The town’s downtown revitalization efforts will take a leap forward this Thursday at 4 PM with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Maximus Health and Fitness Center has already moved in to the ground floor of the building. Goldberg’s Bagel’s is there as well, and the Riverhead Flower Shop is moving in soon. There’s still 2000 square feet of retail space available. Woolworth’s was a magnet on Main Street for years. After it closed in 1997, the structure began to fall into disrepair – water was coming through the roof, incinerators and conveyor belts at the old loading dock. It was facing demolition. This week, it boasts a new roof, storefront and utilities. Its second floor has been revamped to accommodate 19 affordable units. The first tenants, who met income requirements and were chosen through a lottery, will move in on Sunday.
Michael Butler, the managing partner of Woolworth Revitalization LLC, the owner/developer for the building, says his goal was to undertake a total renovation while keeping the Woolworth memory alive. All the construction took place in the original footprint of the building, and the front and back facades now look like they did in 1955, with a new window and front canopy to match the originals. The stone sign on the outside that says “Woolworth’s” remains in its original location, and the signage in place for Maximus mimics the large red letters of the Woolworth style. The Art Deco lobby was carefully restored and is now the formal entrance to the apartments. The building features three types of units: studios, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms. The apartments’ rents are based on income levels, and prospective tenants must pass an income verification process via the Long Island Housing Partnership. Affordable rents start at $895 for studios, $1,133 for one bedrooms, and $1,528 for two bedrooms. There are still nine apartments available and prospective tenants are urged to apply now or visit the website www.woolworthapartments.com for

more information. The remaining apartments will be rented on a firstcome, first-served basis. Amenities include large energy-efficient refrigerators and dishwashers, five-burner stoves and ovens, plenty of cabinet space, efficient and individually controlled heating and air conditioning units, and Internet and cable readiness. Tenants also have an on-site laundry facility, ample free parking behind the building, and special membership rates at Maximus. Riverhead’s Historic Main Street is a perfect spot for individuals or young families, recent graduates starting out in the work force, and empty nesters looking for a downtown feel, Butler believes. “You can walk or picnic along the river, see a show at the refurbished Art Deco Suffolk Theatre and Performing Arts Center, and grab a bite to eat at many great places right in the neighborhood.” The Woolworth Apartments are the second large recent investment into housing stock in Riverhead. The building was bought in February 2013 for $2 million and some $5.5 million was spent on construction and project development of the residential and retail space. To make the project feasible and keep rents affordable, the
project received funding from Suffolk County via Workforce Housing Development Funds and the Federal HUD HOME Program. The Town of Riverhead also assisted via a New York State Main Street grant, and the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency provided tax incentives. In exchange, the developer is obligated to keep rents at affordable levels to those making between 50 percent and 80 percent of the Nassau-Suffolk median income. “This is a building with an important history in Riverhead both as a positive reminder of the era when the store came into existence and as a symbol of a bustling retail area,” Butler said in a release. “Along with the Hyatt Place East End, Summerwind Square and the Suffolk Theatre, I think the Woolworth Apartments further signify that we are well on our way to creating a unified living/working/shopping area which will only bring increased economic vitality, jobs and residents to the downtown area. Plus it’s just a cool place to live and be part of a resurgent community.” For more information on income qualifications and applications, contact the Long Island Housing Partnership at 631-435-4710 or visit www.woolworthapartments.com.

Planes & Choppers & Committee Recs By Kitty Merrill
They’ve got still another report to review before town board members draft legislation designed to mitigate noise at the East Hampton Airport. Next Tuesday consultants for the town are expected to offer the final phase of a noise study. Last week a town-appointed subcommittee presented its findings and recommendations. The group, headed by David Gruber, categorized aircraft by noise level, calling some merely noisy and others the “noisiest” with a third classification for “quiet types.” The 12-member committee offered proposed legislation in its report. Under the curfew section
it calls for a prohibition of aircraft classified as noisiest between 5 PM and 9 AM every day. Aircraft that are just noisy would be subject to a 7 PM to 8 AM curfew. The noisiest aircraft would be prohibited from conducting more than two operations (that’s one arrival and one departure) during any single calendar week. From May 1 through October 31 each arrival and departure by the noisiest type of craft between noon each Thursday and noon the following Monday, on any federal holiday or the days before and after the holiday will be subject to a noise pollution surcharge. According to the draft,
the purpose of the surcharge is to “reduce the market demand for operations by Noisiest types.” A section of the law pertains specifically to helicopters. Those classified as noisiest would be prohibited “at all times on all days,” the committee’s proposal states. Those classified as noisy would be prohibited during the same times listed above in season and from conducting more than two operations during any calendar week. Members also want to see touch and go operations regulated and restricted during the season, and subject to landing fees. The committee believes the types
of users at the airport should be prioritized, with recreational flyers receiving the highest priority and commuter flights listing as lowest priority. Quiet Skies Coalition chairwoman Kathleen Cunningham predicted the recommendations will bring “substantial relief” to neighborhoods affected by incessant aircraft noise. The town board is expected to debut its own bevy of rules some time after digesting the consultant’s report next Tuesday. Supervisor Larry Cantwell was quoted stating the board’s version “may or may not” be based on the committee’s recommendations.

There is a minimum of $2,500 required to open the Apple Bank BONUS Savings account. $2,500 minimum daily balance is required to avoid $10 monthly maintenance fee. Fees may reduce earnings. Funds used to open this account cannot be from an existing Apple Bank account. Maximum deposit amount is $1,000,000 per household. **Special bonus feature: A .25% simple interest rate bonus will be paid on each anniversary date of account opening on the lowest balance for that year (anniversary date to anniversary date). No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. The bonus interest is calculated on the lowest balance on deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2015 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2015. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2016 anniversary date. The low balance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on January 12, 2016.

Term Limits Slated For Southampton
By Emily Toy
Recently Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst and the rest of the town board discussed initiating term limits for the town’s advisory boards. “These would be put in place for appointed and elected boards, such as the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Architectural Review Board, and the Planning Board,” Throne-Holst said during a work session earlier this month. “It puts some continuity as well as ability for new members to be considered while retaining important institutional knowledge.” Throne-Holst mentioned the town board receives letters of interest on a regular basis from members of
the community about both serving on advisory boards and how said boards don’t have term limits installed. “Although we appreciate they want to serve,” the supervisor said, “there needs to be a balance, there needs to be a preservation of institutional knowledge and an open door for new blood.” The suggestion at hand features putting a two-term limit for each individual serving, with a maximum service timeline being no more than eight years, according to ThroneHolst. “We’ve talked about this during work sessions,” the supervisor said, “and we’ll be deliberating further
on this, but what is being suggested here is to have four year terms with a limit of no more than two terms.” The creation of an alternate position for the boards, similar to an alternate on a jury, was also discussed by the town board, with the alternate being able to sit on the dais and allowed full participation and voting rights in place of any absent member.
“People approach us ever y year, and there’s been a tendency to reappoint sitting members,” Throne-Holst said. “While we’re grateful for their service, this puts us in a somewhat tricky position. With these suggested term limits, it allows for the new people to so-call ‘get their feet wet.’” A public hearing on the issue was set for February 10.

The Clamshell Foundation hosted its annual chili contest at the American Legion in Amagansett on Sunday. Twenty six organizations, like the East Hampton Fire Department, local food establishments, like the Red Horse Market, and individuals, like Councilman Fred Overton, threw it down, serving up an array of sumptuous stews, all tested by chili hat wearing judges. Stephanie Clark was chosen audience favorite, Kim Kenney took the prize in the individual category and the Hampton Bays restaurant, Cowfish, won the professional category but everybody who got a taste was a winner.

look at the shifty pilot and the tin can plane eight of us were about to board and I said, “No thanks, Amigo. I took the cab back to the hotel. That plane? It crashed – I’m not kidding. Karen hates airplanes and makes no bones about it. So when it was time for us to fly to Cancun on our honeymoon, she was pretty shaken. I had talked her into it by assuring her I would be there every step of the way, and that I had my lucky rabbit’s foot that never let me down. It was true I was pretty lucky, but when you think about it the rabbit wasn’t or his foot wouldn’t have been in my pocket. When we went into the plane we discovered we weren’t sitting together – we had no idea why but the plane was booked solid. She turned around and looked at me forlornly but when the plane began to take off she grabbed the arm of the guy next to her as if he were hubby number two. Later in the flight the pilot made what was to me an astounding announcement: we were over international waters and smoking was allowed
I fear nothing, except maybe mice and feminists. But I admit to a certain amount of uneasiness when I’m forced to fly. That’s probably why we never manage to take a vacation. The first time I was on a plane I was about 21 and me and a bunch of guys from Sag Harbor were flying down to New Orleans. There we were goofing around saying “God damn this and “God damn that when we hit heavy turbulence. I never prayed so hard in my life. Not only did I apologize to God for taking his name in vain, I apologized for every sin I had committed from the time I was an embryo. I even promised to give up cussin’ and drinkin’ but when we landed safely I told him I was just kidding. A few years later I was in San Juan and a group of people at the hotel were going to take one of those rickety charter planes to some nearby island to either visit a rain forest or see a cock fight, I can’t remember which (those are the only two tourist attractions in Puerto Rico). When we got to the “airport – a strip of dirt, I took one

in the last nine rows of the plane. Half the people in the front immediately made a beeline for the back of the plane including me and hubby number two. The stewardess told us we had to sit down but at this point we were so determined to get a couple puffs in we ignored her. It was like an act of civil disobedience – we were going to smoke, and if they wanted to put us away in some dingy Mexican jail then that’s what they would have to do – as long as smoking was allowed. By the time it was time to land Karen was clinging to husband number three. Luckily, I was the only one in the bedroom for the honeymoon. We were sitting in the Cancun airport a week later waiting to fly back to Florida when I picked up the Sunday Miami Herald. The front page had a five-column headline – a plane from Cancun had crashed in the everglades the day before – same make, model, and same airline. “Can I have the front section? Karen asked. “Here, take Arts and Leisure. “No, I want to see what’s happening in the world. “Here, take sports. Then I told her there was no front section. When she sent me to buy another paper I told her they were all sold out. Thankfully, she didn’t find out about the crash until we set down safely, though she damn near married two other guys when I insisted on taking a cigarette break in those last

nine rows instead of remaining in my seat to help calm her nerves. Orville and Wilbur Wright are credited with inventing the first flying machine. This was a lot more profound then say, creating a spacecraft, because they were tested without pilots, and with monkeys. When the astronauts complained they had nothing to do they installed phony little steering wheels that turned around and around, like the kind on the little cars at the carnival. Orville and Wilbur reached that inevitable moment is history with more than a little trepidation. “Are you sure this thing will fly? “Positive. “Positively certain? “Absolutely positively certain. “Ok, get in. “No, you get in. Historians say Wilber “won a coin toss and made the first flight, which lasted 12 seconds. Then he came down and said, “it’s your turn Orville — take her to Canada! and Orville said, “Dude, you were only three feet off the ground! Here we are trapped in the house with the storm raging, having once again missed our chance to fly to some exotic locale. But snow or no snow I take comfort in the fact that if I die it will be with my boots on the ground. Maybe we can get away to some vacation hotspot this weekend – I’m thinking Speonk.

In Need Of Reform Now that Sheldon Silver has been arrested – joining former swine mate Joe Bruno – perhaps the wheeling dealing that has been a staple in Albany for decades may finally end. Silver, the State Assembly leader, and Bruno, the former State Senate Majority leader, have been running the state for years, and everyone concerned played by their rule. Their stranglehold was glaringly public, and the pair so powerful that no amount of reform could touch them. They are on a growing list of state politicians who have been accused of brazen illegal activity. Again, this is no surprise. New York’s legislature was branded the “most dysfunctional in the country” years ago and wore the crown uncontested. Anyone wanting or needing anything had to go through Bruno and Silver, and make no mistake about it; a price was extracted before they granted the favor. The East End has two state legislators as entrenched as any - Fred Thiele and Ken LaValle. On one hand, we should be happy we have two representatives who knew how to play nice with Bruno and Silver and were able to function
Independent VOICES
Expensive Idea Dear Editor, With word spreading that East Hampton is seriously considering a town manager, wouldn’t you think they’d put such an expensive idea before the voters, rather than over-riding the voice of taxpayers? The cost to taxpayers would add to the burden we are asked to shoulder. We warned everyone that putting a majority of Democrats in the Town Board would bring higher taxes. I don’t hear the Town Board saying they’ll take a pay cut to balance the budget for this luxury. We don’t exactly have a huge population, even with the summer crowd
to offset the cost, but we could consider doing away with the Town Supervisor’s job and just hand it over to a Town Manager just sayin’. LYNDA A. W. EDWARDS
Make Believe Dear Mr. Logan, I do not believe there are words to express the disdain for your review of The American Sniper. There is no “overly dramatic” or “pretentiousness” in regards to the mental, emotional and physical trauma that our soldiers and their families experience upon coming back from war or in between deployments. It is because of our soldiers protecting our freedoms that you can sit on your comfy couch, drinking your latte and spout
effectively. On the other hand, those who stand by silently while a wrong is being committed bear a certain amount of responsibility. It could be argued LaValle and Thiele were certainly aware of the wheeling dealing and were careful never to lock horns with the powerful leaders. We suspect a wave of reform is about to sweep through Albany. And it just might be – might be – all the old players, all those who stood passively by with a wink and a nod while corruption was festering should make way for some fresh blood. On the other hand, our two legislators may be in prime positions to exert some real influence in Albany, and that means good things will happen on the East End. It’s up to the voters, of course, but food for thought to be sure. Speaking of Silver, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Silver had his full support – after the rogue had been arrested. Honestly, does this idiot mayor have a functioning brain in that fat head?
off such a dismissive and ignorant review. May I suggest that you visit a veteran’s hospital or rehabilitation center, or visit a veteran’s family to see the real postwar drama that they experience and live, day in and day out. Perhaps then you might comprehend the authenticity of this film in portraying the effects of war combat on veterans and their families. The American Sniper hopefully will prompt people to thank, support, and help our veterans and their families. This film, honoring and portraying our soldiers, veterans and their families, transcends any Oscar Award. PATTI ANN KELLY Editor’s Note: Miles is our movie critic. His opinion about the film has nothing at all to do with real life soldiers. He is critiquing actors standing in front of a camera in Hollywood, not soldiers fighting in the Middle East! It’s make believe.
Quality Of Life Dear Editor, I want to add my voice to my neighbors’ voices and insist that the East Hampton Town Board stop debating the issue of large commercial vehicles parked overnight and/ or stored on residential property in Springs, and start enforcing existing codes. Frankly, it is inconceivable to me that the town board is even considering granting an amnesty (what some may erroneously call “grandfathering”) for inappropriate vehicles when they should not have been allowed to proliferate in Springs in the first place. To look the other way would be to violate the basic zoning principle that provides separation of commercial and residential uses, and activities. No resident should have to suffer the consequences of Continued on Page 14.

having any “non-compliant” commercial vehicles parked next door, across the street or down the street. The town board needs to help us maintain property values and quality of life in Springs -- and not make decisions that turn our hamlet into commercial parking lot. I have asked the members of the town board to PLEASE stand up and speak as one to define light truck as a vehicle that does not exceed 10,000 pounds GVWR. Dahlia Lopez We just moved to East Hampton so we want to be prepared if we lose electricity. I have two young children, a five month old and a three year old. So I’ll need to stock up on meals for the family that we can make without power if we have to. Janice Crawford We’re from Nassau County. We heard the stores there are packed with people preparing for the storm. We’re shopping before heading back so we don’t have to deal with the crowds. We’ll get gas here, too. Historic Property For Sale
Student Art Independent / Kitty Merrill
By Emily Toy
Southampton Town officials are organizing an effort to buy back the historic Pyrrhus Concer homestead. Landmarks and Historic Districts Chair Sally Spanburgh is spearheading the effort to have the town purchase the property located on Pond Lane in Southampton Village. The homestead is where notable Southampton Village historical figure Pyrrhus Concer lived. Born a slave in 1814, Concer was freed and went on several whaling expeditions, most notably when he was part of a crew that saved stranded Japanese sailors and returned them home, becoming one of the first Americans, and black men, to see then-restricted Japan. “The property should be purchased by the Town of Southampton so that 1) the Concer homestead can be re-erected on its original property and 2) archaeological investigations can be made on the property which are likely to yield additional important information,” Spanburgh said in an email last week. According to Spanburgh, both of these endeavors will ensure that a rare and precious historic resource directly related to Southampton slavery and local African American whalers will be preserved and made available to the public for educational purposes. Two years ago an application was made to demolish the homestead and replace it with a new one. The

application was denied three months later by the Southampton Village Board of Historic Preservation and Architectural Review, after which the property owners sued Southampton Village. The property was listed for sale for $5 million in November. The owners purchased the .82-acre property for about $2.75 million in 2013. According to an online listing for the property, “all permits are in place for a 5700-sqaure foot house, pool and guesthouse for be built on the site.” Concer’s former homestead had become a rallying point for preservationists, with some claiming too much African American history on Long Island had been destroyed. Parts of the house were torn down in August after preservationists were allowed to remove beams and other historic parts of the home that are to be used in constructing a replica of the building. Spanburgh is asking residents and officials to contact the S o u t h a m p t o n To w n B o a r d , requesting the endorsement of purchasing the property. “Both of these endeavors will ensure that a rare and precious historic resource directly related to Southampton slavery and local African American whalers will be preserved and made available to the public for educational and promotional purposes when much of the same across Long Island has been largely eradicated,” Spanburgh said.

Soon Sooo Sloooowwww If you like riding your brake and crawling along congested roads at a snail’s pace during the summer season, have local lawmakers got a treat for you. Thanks to new bills introduced in Albany recently, motorists can experience the slow riding of summer all year round. At the request of officials in the Town of East Hampton and Villages of East Hampton and Sag Harbor, Assemblyman Fred Thiele introduced legislation that would allow locals to lower speed limits still further in their respective municipalities in areas where other traffic calming measures are not feasible. The first bill will allow East Hampton to reduce speed limits on town roads to 25 miles per hour (10 mph in school zones). The second permits the villages to reduce their speed limits to 20 mph. Said Mayor Paul Rickenbach, “By enabling the Village to lower the speed limit to 20 miles per hour on these roads, we can promote safer speeds for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, who are all sharing the roadways. Drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists share the road and, should the bills pass, the latter two will be not just safer; they’ll be traveling faster than the cars.

Mastandrea, Novack Married Laura Michele Mastandrea and Paul Jason Novack, of Sag Harbor and Montauk, were married on October 4 at the Oceanside Beach Resort in Montauk. Judge Edward Burke officiated the ceremony and a reception followed under the tent. The bride is an independent real estate broker on the South Fork, Director of the Montauk Seafood Festival, a Samba Boom! drummer and radio co-host on WPPB. degree in culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University. He previously has worked at the NY Athletic Club, Dave’s Grill, Shagwong and World Pie restaurant. He has also been surfing Montauk’s shores for over 35 years. The bride’s parents, Vincent and Rosemary Mastandrea of East Meadow, celebrated their 50th anniversary the same day. The groom’s mother, Jeannette Novack and bride’s grandmother, Irene Ambrosino, were also present to celebrate the event. The bride wore a white strapless Sincerity mermaid gown. Bonac Holds Off Amityville; Streak At Six
By Rick Murphy
One of Suffolk’s most unlikely Cinderella stories is playing out right here in East Hampton. The boys’ basketball team, young,
inexperienced, and lacking a single “big” man, is beating some of the best Class A teams in the county. Thursday the Bonackers knocked off Amityville, 61-59 for their sixth

consecutive victory. It was an epic battle – in fact, Assistant Coach Bob Vacca, a former high school and collegiate All-American and an NBA draft pick, said the battle was, “the most intense game I have ever been involved in.” Once again it was Bonac’s penchant for taking – and nailing – three point shots that proved the difference, despite the fact their opponents know the game plan. Thursday it was junior Kyle McKee – the coach’s son – front and center, nailing six bombs en route to a team-high 22 points. Fellow backcourt mate Brenden KennedyGay hit three treys and scored 19, and his clutch shooting down the stretch sealed the deal. Kennedy-Gay is Bonac’s point guard and best ball handler. He is also as cool as the winter snow -- twice with the game on the line he was sent to the charity stripe. He broke a tie by drilling both shots with 45 seconds left, and made two more with seconds left to seal the deal. Bonac managed to somewhat contain Mike Smith, Amityville’s scoring machine, who nevertheless popped for 28. Kevin Fee scored 13 points and also hit three bombs. The victory

was the sixth straight for the surging Bonackers, who ran their League VI record to 6-2 (9-5 overall), tied with Shoreham Wading River and behind Bayport/Bluepoint (8-1). But East Hampton beat both teams last week, and a game at Bayport on February 5 may decide which team wins the league title and earns the higher seed in the coming Suffolk County playoffs.

Bees Face Major Test; Mariners Win Again
By Rick Murphy
The good news is the Bridgehampton Killer Bees remain unbeaten and untested. The bad news is the honeymoon might be over. Friday the Bees embark on a weekend journey upstate designed to do two things: give them experience on the road and face some tough competition. Saturday the Bees take on Class B Syracuse Academy of Science, and the following day Bishop Grimes, another Class B school with a college Division I prospect playing guard. T h e B e e s , 13 - 0 , n e e d t h e competition. On Friday they pummeled Ross School on the losers’ court 75-43 to run their League VIII record to 11-0. It was a display of raw power reminiscent of the
Bridgehampton teams of yore. A 32-2 onslaught in the first quarter ended the suspense early; the game was literally decided in two or so minutes. After that Bridgehampton coach Carl Johnson substituted liberally. Josh Lamison led all scorers with 21 and grabbed an uncountable number of rebounds. Charles Manning Jr., the fourth leading scorer in the county, settled for 20 and Tylik Furman scored 14 and recorded six assists. Ross has yet to win a game this season. On January 20 the Bees knocked off Smithtown Christian, like Ross, another Class D school. The victory virtually assured Bridgehampton of the Long Island Class D crown since it has vanquished all its rivals

already this season. Once again it was a laugher – the final was 79-52 but the fourth quarter was played with the starting team on the bench. The game, once again, evaporated into a runaway quickly. Smithtown Christian opened in a tight zone designed to keep Manning and Lamison in check. Matt Hostetler hit three bombs and the Bees were off

to the races. Manning ended with 23, Lamison had 18, Furman 14 and Hostetler 13. Southampton, playing in League VII, is also undefeated. Thursday, Mercy was the victim, as the Mariners romped on their home court 82-55. All-County candidate Isaiah Johnson nearly pulled off a triple double but settled for 18 points and 10 boards. Nasies Fulford contributed 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Zach Cummings had 14 points and five assists and Israel Johnson had nine points, seven assists, and seven rebounds. Kevin Santacroce had 13 points for Mercy. Southampton is 14-0 overall and 10-0 in league play.
Girls Hoop Wrap Riverhead, 7-3 in League III and 8-5 overall, has qualified for the Suffolk County Class AA tournament despite losing 4840 at West Islip Saturday. Kate McCarney scored 14 for the locals. Westhampton, 2-4 in League V, needs a late surge to qualify for postseason action. The Lady Hurricanes stayed alive by beating Rocky Point Friday on the losers’ court 44-29. Shea Casey tallied 10 points for the winners Hampton Bays (6-1, 13-2) and Mattituck (6-1, 8-7) are tied for the League VII lead, a game ahead of Babylon. All three teams will compete in the Class B playoffs. The Baywomen humbled Pierson/Shelter Island Thursday behind the scoring of Alexis Fotopoulos, 17, Hannah Reed (10), and Mackenzie Tyler (10). Nia Dawson, with 11 and Isabel Peters, with 10, led the Lady Whalers. Mattituck upended Wyandanch at home Friday 60-34 with Liz Dwyer having a sensational game – 31 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. In League VIII Southold/ Greenport (4-2, 6-6) and Pierson/ Shelter island (4-3, 7-8) need to finish with .500 league marks to earn a berth in the Class C playoffs. The North Forkers traveled to Shelter Island and came home with a 44-16 victory. Madison Tabor had 21 for the victors. R.M.
