The Worst Is Yet To Come

By Rick Murphy

East Enders already weary from the driving snow, swirling winds and frigid temperatures face more bad news. According to forecasters what has already been the coldest February on record may get even colder. In fact, tomorrow and Friday nights may flirt with the all-time record for lowest temperature ever recorded on those respective dates. The National Weather Service is calling for low temps to approach zero and possibly dip below. The weekend may end up seeming downright balmy, with highs between 20 and 30 degrees forecast. It can’t get much worse. According to Accuweather a record low of 14 below zero was set in Poughkeepsie, Sunday night, shattering the

previous record of 4 below set in 1958. Records were also set at Kennedy Airport, in Islip and in Bridgeport. Wind chills were approaching minus 30 in some locations. The weather is wreaking havoc on the infrastructures of local municipalities. “The last big storm I would say cost us $200,000,” said Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Alex Gregor. “We have enough sand for two more events but we are out of salt.” The massive amounts of snow about 30 inches from the last two events, coupled with the frigid temperatures, have taken their toll on equipment. “We had 14 trucks that went down – belts breaking, transmission problems and so on,” Gregor reported.

Independent / James J. Mackin

Pumps designed to keep ice from forming were weather-tested at Three Mile Harbor Town Marina during the deep freeze, putting boats and pilings in danger. ON THE COVER: PSEG makes repairs in Springs.

East Hampton Town Highway Superintendent Steve Lynch said the town is going out to bid for two new trucks this week. “We lost two -- one burned up and one just died,” he said. The town, though, has plenty of salt, thanks to a fresh shipment last week, and his budget surprisingly, “is in good shape.” His crews, though, have turned in yeomen efforts. “They have been great. After 13 hours they can go home but they don’t. To

do what they have been doing is unbelievable.” Lynch said he’s augmented his department with workers from Parks and Sanitation departments as well as outside contractors. Experts agree the best defense against severe cold is the obvious one: stay home, and make sure you have plenty of fuel for your heating system. Those who must go out might want to follow guidelines made popular by coldwater fisherman and published in Angler Boater: a base layer of a polypropylene-based garment, which contrary to popular belief works much better than cotton. The best natural material to use is silk. The base layer should be followed by an insulation layer to trap warm air but allows perspiration to escape. Goose down is the most popular and effective. An outer or shell layer should be waterproof, windproof, but breathable. The best materials on the market nowadays are Polar Fleece or Thinsulate. Remember the clothing should extend down the leg – and don’t forget insulated socks, waterproof boots, and hats, gloves, and earmuffs. According to MyForcast temperatures will rise out of the single digits late this weekend and will gradually rise next week. It is forecast to reach highs in the low 40s by March 1. JOKES, JOKES, JOKES This is one of those days. I can’t think of a thing to write about. It was a nice three-day weekend and now my mind is a blank. So I’ve gone to the jokes and quotes that people email me every day. As usual I have no idea who posted them, and if they write me I will be glad to identify them.

ON POLITICIANS The quickest way to end a war is to lose it. -- George Orwell Illegal aliens have always been a problem in the United States. Ask any Indian! -- Robert Orben The rich require an abundant supply of the poor. -- Voltaire Politics is made up of two words: “poli,” which is Greek for “many,” and “tics,” which are blood-sucking insects. -- Gore Vidal In order to become the master, the politician poses as the servant. -- Charles de Gaulle I once said cynically of a politician, “He’ll double-cross that bridge when he comes to it.” -- Oscar Levant A society of sheep must in time beget a government of wolves. -J.M. Cain

A lot has been said about politics, some of it complimentary, but most of it accurate. -- Eric Idle It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong. -- Voltaire True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high-school class is running the country. -- Kurt Vonnegut Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber. -- Plato There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he doesn’t want because you think it would be good for him. -- Robert Heinlein Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich by promising to protect each from the other. -- Oscar Ameringiner And finally, dedicated to Bill Belichick: Being in politics is like being a football coach: You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it’s important. -- Eugene McCarthy

THE WIZARD An Alabama pastor said to his congregation, “Someone in this congregation has spread a rumor that I belong to the Ku Klux Klan. This is a horrible lie and one which a Christian community cannot tolerate. I am embarrassed, and do not intend to accept this. Now, I want the party who said this to stand and ask forgiveness from God and this Christian family.” No one moved. The preacher continued, “Do you have the nerve to face me and admit this is a falsehood? Remember, you will be forgiven and in your heart you will feel glory. Now stand and confess your transgression.” Again, all was quiet. Then, slowly, a drop-dead gorgeous redhead with a voluptuous body rose from the third pew. Her head was bowed and her voice quivered as she spoke: “Reverend, there has been a terrible misunderstanding. I never said you were a member of the Ku Klux Klan. I simply told a couple of my friends that you were a wizard under the sheets.” The preacher fell to his knees, his wife fainted, and the congregation roared. Can I have an “Amen?” THE POPE The word is that the Pope is planning to have Pete Carroll, the Seattle Seahawks football coach, come to Rome and he will be given the second-highest position in the Vatican. The Pope was very impressed that on February 1, with two minutes to go in the Super Bowl, Mr. Carroll got over 200 million people to stand up at the same time and shout out “JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!”

THE IRISH A Mormon was seated next to an Irishman on a flight from London. After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken. The Irishman asked for a whiskey, which was promptly brought and placed before him. The flight attendant then asked the Mormon if he would like a drink. He replied in disgust, “I’d rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips.” The Irishman then handed his drink back to the attendant and said, “Me, too. I didn’t know we had a choice.” ON BEING OLD A man writes: My wife and I went into town and visited a shop. When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and I said, “Come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?” He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him an “a**hole.” He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn-out tires. So my wife called him a “s*ithead.” He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing more tickets. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote. He finally finished, sneered at us and walked away. Just then our bus arrived, and we got on it and went home. We always look for cars with Obama 2012 stickers. We try to have a little fun each day now that we’re retired. It’s so important at our age!! IF YOU’RE OVER 70 Q: Why should 70-plus-year-old people use valet parking? A: Valets don’t forget where they park your car.

Growing your business starts here.

We’re lending to local businesses. Experienced lenders. Local decision-making. Faster financing.

Q: As people age, do they sleep more soundly? A: Yes, but usually in the afternoon. Q: Where should 70-plus-yearolds look for eyeglasses? A: On their foreheads. Q: What is the most common remark made by 70-plus-year-olds when they enter antique stores? A: “Gosh, I remember these!” AND FINALLY Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.

Hospice Hoists The Beam By Kitty Merrill

The final steel beam of the Kanas Center for Hospice Care was signed by dozens of East End Hospice supporters and employees last week. It was due to be hoisted by crane into place yesterday as The Independent went to press. Giving a nod to the ancient Scandinavian ceremony of “topping out,” the beam will bear the EEH flag on one end and a small tree at the other. Centuries ago, people set a tree atop a new structure to appease the tree gods that had been displaced during construction. Painted white, the nine-foot piece

of steel was signed by President & CEO Priscilla Ruffin and dozens of people including staff, nurses, doctors, clergy and members of the board. Located at 1 Meeting House Road in Quiogue, the project has been in planning stages for a decade. The eight-bed inpatient facility, designed by renowned architect Roger Ferris, will be the only one of its kind on the East End. Set on six acres of conservation land bordered by the Aspatuck River, the Kanas Center for Hospice Care is designed with low, one-storied gabled forms, residential in scale and joined by sky-lit hallways and common areas.

Eight private rooms will be equipped to manage the needs of the critically ill. The facility also boasts a spa room with a soaking tub. Friends and family will be able to gather in shared spaces such as the library and a glass-walled Great Room. Landscape by Arayis Design includes multiple gardens and walking paths, with benches for rest and contemplation. The facility was named in honor of lead benefactors John Adam Kanas, Chairman, President and CEO of BankUnited and his wife, Elaine M. Kanas, Chairman of the Board, Raynor Country Day School and Vice Chairman of the Board of The Stony Brook School.

At an emotional groundbreaking ceremony on July 25, 2014, Kanas voiced the hope that the center will be a place where “each person will feel peace and solace, and the healing that sometimes comes in this life and sometimes in the next.” Despite the recent heavy snowfalls and bitter cold work by Axis Construction has been ongoing since the groundbreaking. Completion is anticipated by fall 2015. Once the doors open, The Kanas Center for Hospice Care will provide 24-hour acute care, as well as social, emotional and spiritual support for patients and their families. “This will not be just a building, but a symbol of a caring philosophy,” Ruffin said. “It will be a peaceful place where people will spend their final days comfortably and with dignity.” For the staff of East End Hospice, which has already served over 10,000 patients, having the chance to leave their mark on the building was an unforgettable and deeply rewarding moment.

Buggin’ Out By Emily Toy

A recently discovered beetle infestation in Hampton Bays is now threatening acres of the Pine Barrens Preserve in Southampton Town. Last week the New York State Department of Environmental Conser vation issued a memo advising officials and residents to begin efforts to suppress the newly discovered Southern Pine Beetle infestation, which is currently plaguing Henry’s Hollow, an area of state land stretching from Bellows Pond Road, south of Sunrise Highway, north of the Pines development and Munn’s Pond, and west toward The Hills in East Quogue. The SPB, which according to a press release from the town, was confirmed for the first time in New York State in September. It’s a bark beetle native to the southern United States that’s steadily expanded its range north and westward. The beetle itself is small, about two to four millimeters in length, about

the size of a grain of rice, and is red-brown to black in color. Considered one of the most destructive forest pests in the U.S., SPB attacks pine trees including pitch pine, the predominant species found in the Long Island Pine Barrens. From 1999 to 2002, an outbreak of the beetle in the southeastern U.S. resulted in over $1 billion in losses for the timber industry, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Populations of SPB naturally rise and fall, with the beetle able to persist for years at very low numbers or exploding in population. According to the DEC’s webpage on the bug, the switch between high and low population numbers is influenced by the availability of dense pine stands, the number of natural enemies, the types of fungus present, tree defenses, and changes in climate. When it enters the tree through the crevices in the bark, the beetle continues to make S-shaped tunnels in the cambium tissue, just beneath the bar. This in turn disrupts the flow of nutrients, typically killing the tree in two to four months. Most

trees resist the initial attacks by secreting resin that can “pitch out” some adults and slow the entry of others, but trees almost always die as their defenses are overwhelmed by thousands of attacking beetles. The DEC’s letter dated February 5 described to town officials and residents alike the necessary actions to be taken over the next few weeks to cull the beetle infestation. “Suppression efforts will include the felling of an estimated 1000 infested pine trees in the Henry’s Hollow wooded area in Hampton Bays,” the letter read. “Henry’s Hollow has been identified by the DEC as a priority area for suppression efforts. The location and size of the infestation must be addressed now to reduce the chances of the beetle spreading quickly northward into vast areas of the Pine Barrens during warmer weather.” The letter goes on to describe effective methods for ridding the area of the beetle. It involves

cutting infested trees during cold weather months to decrease the beetle population. Pesticide options are available and can be effective for small scale treatment goals, however they are not feasible for large scale management due to high costs and the risk to groundwater, especially since the sole source aquifer that lies below the Pine Barrens, containing Long Island’s purest drinking water, could be impacted. The DEC urges anyone who suspects SPB to report any recently dead pine in the area, especially if there are several trees grouped together. Sighting should be reported to the Forest Health Diagnostic Lab, 866-640-0652 or by email, foresthealth@dec.ny.gov. If possible, accompany any reports via email with photos of the trees including close ups of any damage. For further information, contact Aphrodite Montalvo at 631-444-0249 or email aphrodite.montalvo@dec. ny.gov.

Can We Get An Amen, Mr. Amagansett?

Gordon Ryan, a repeat participant in the annual Mr. Amagansett Pageant, wowed the judges this year as Preacher Gordy George hosting a revival meeting at the Stephen Talkhouse Friday night. Ryan’s act, as well as Councilman Peter VanScoyoc’s clever and entertaining “No More Snow” are already up on YouTube under Mr. Amagansett 2015. An “Honorary Mention” went to Mike Davis for “Best In Show.” Originally from Springs, Davis is

the President of the Red Knights, Chapter 25, which paid the entrance fee for a contestant and sponsored him. Before the pageant he said, “I have no talent. I just ride a motorcycle and drive a truck.” But, according to organizer Tina Piette, “In six years no one has goofed on the Miss America Pageant so well.” Nick Kraus, a former winner and frequent contestant didn’t disappoint. His video submission, The Affair, suggesting the real relationship between him and

Independent/Nick Kraus

Talkhouse owner Peter Honerkamp, was deemed hysterical. Kraus, as

this year’s MC, explained to the crowd that there is no such thing as a “former” Mr. Amagansett. It’s like being the President of the United States. Once you attain the title, you are always “Mr. Amagansett.” Billy Mott was sponsored by the American Legion. He gave a moving tribute to Don Sharkey and the charitable work that is going on in his name, (The organization named for Sharkey founded the pageant). Te l l y Ka r o u s s o s o f f e r e d a “Rapping Mr. Amagansett” act. He was sponsored by Douglas Elliman Realty and definitely was the first hip-hop artist to hit the pageant stage. Rounding out the six contestants, was Randy Leland, who was talked into appearing just that afternoon by his girlfriend, Jill Kampf. He appeared as a rugged, shirtless, shorts-wearing professional tree cutter (which he is) in his work boots, with his tool belt prominently displayed. Using Britton Bistrian as a “tree,” he explained the finer aspects of how to take out trees “safely,” with a roaring, live chainsaw.

Red dresses and red (or white) wine are the name of the game this month, with a Red Dress Dinner – Girls Night Out and the Long Island Winterfest ready to heat up cold winter nights. Live on the Vine 2015, a six week music and performing arts festival on the North Fork promises over 70 live performances by top names and emerging artists at more than two dozen stages and locations, including vineyard tasting rooms, boutique hotels and historic theaters. Nationally-recognized for its tourism and economic impact during the off-season, LI Winterfest kicks off Friday night at 7 PM with a performance by Vinny St. Marten & Seeing Eye Dogs playing soul at Hotel Indigo in Riverhead. Saturday sees over a dozen shows at as many locales, including Smithereens at Suffolk Theater in Riverhead, Red White & Blues Band at Pellegrini Vineyards in Cutchogue, Rob Europe at Jamesport Vineyard, and Gil Parris at Raphael Winery, just to name a few. Afternoon and evening performances are scheduled for Saturday, with Sunday seeing just afternoon performances. LI Winterfest Live on the Vine runs each weekend through March 29. Visit their website for a full rundown of shows, as well as suggestions for dining spots and accommodations.

Dress Red Ladies, save the date. On March 6, Atlantis Banquets & Events in Riverhead hosts the 12th annual Red Dress Dinner – Girls Night Out from 7 to 11 PM in the Sea Star Ballroom. Wear your favorite red outfits to raise awareness of heart disease and especially its effects on women. According to the American Heart Association heart disease or stroke kills a woman in the United States every minute. Nancy Kouris, founder of the event, wanted to ensure her friends were aware of the dangers of Cardiovascular Disease while still having a fun evening out. “Why not be informed while enjoying the company of other women in friendship and fun?” Keeping women informed is

a big reason for the Red Dress Dinner. Only one in five American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat, yet 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors. Portions of the proceeds from the Red Dress Dinner will go to the American Heart Association. The Red Dress Dinner will feature a sit down dinner created

RICK’S SPACE The Independent Annual Roundtable

Since being named editor of The Independent 12 years ago I have hosted an annual roundtable with some of the major shakers and movers who are making the news this year. Last Saturday we braved the nasty weather for a sit down at The Palm restaurant. For a complete transcript send $5 to the Indy office in East Hampton. First of all, welcome to you, my guests at the 2015 Independent Roundtable. Brian Williams: I’m honored to be

here. You know, Rick, I have never eaten at this fine establishment before although as a child I was executive Chef at La Bernardine so I know a thing or two about fine dining. Kanye West: I would like to ask one simple question: Am I the only black man at this function? Brian: I am proud to say that I am a black man as well, good sir. Chris Christie: I’d like to point out I’m not here to curry votes in New York simply because I am a Dallas

Cowboys’ fan. Waiter: Our specials this evening are the 48-ounce rib eye for two, five-pound lobsters, and double cut lamb chops. Christie: Yes, yes, and yes. Kanye: I am a vegan. Eating red meat is the white man’s way of keeping brothers down. Waiter: Would you like the vegetarian platter, sir? Kanye: No, I’ll take the rib eye. Rick: Is this your first time in The Hamptons? Kanye: No, I often chill with Russell Simmons. Rick: You must rap with him a lot! That’s a joke! Christie: There are no Republicans left in East Hampton so I haven’t been invited out here since Della Femina moved. Brian: I built a little place for myself in Sagaponack. Rick: You built it yourself?

Happy Annivers ary to You!

Brian: Yes, using tools I personally crafted out of tree branches when I was a boy scout leader. It’s called the Ira Rennert mansion. It’s cozy. Kanye: That place should belong to Beyoncé. You don’t respect artistry! Brian: Actually, I do. That’s why I worked so closely with Willem de Kooning. Rick: You worked with Bill when he was alive? Williams: And after he was dead as well. Waiter: Wine anyone? Kanye: I’ll have cognac. Waiter: Courvoisier? Kanye: Ya think? Rick: What are the biggest problems we have to deal with in the Hamptons? Kanye: I would say it’s the traffic out here. Really terrible. Rick: Chris, did you have anything to do with that? Christie: There may have been some delays on the Shinnecock Bridge but I assure you . . . Brian: I used to go fishing off of that fine span when I was a youngster. As a matter of fact I caught my first shark there. Rick: You caught a shark? Brian: Yes, but it was only 18-feet, and I was seven by then. Rick: Let’s talk about our town supervisors. Larry Cantwell. Christie: Is he a Republican? If not I suggest he get used to traffic jams. Kanye: He should give that Grammy to Beyoncé. Rick: Well, he didn’t win a Grammy. That was Beck. Kanye: He’s nerdy looking too, though -- right? Rick: How about Anna ThroneHolst? Kanye: I like her. She has boots like Beyoncé. Rick: You should see Councilwoman Scalera. Williams: I served in Nam with Anna. She was there when I threw my body over that grenade . . . Rick: I don’t think Anna was in Vietnam. Williams: Well, some of us choose to serve, others do not. Rick: Governor Christie, your thoughts? Christie: I think the waiters in the Hamptons should bring more bread. Rick: Let’s divvy up the check. Kanye, you owe $87 for the steak and cognac. Kanye: I’m leaving because you haven’t learned to respect artists. Rick: Brian, you have any money? Williams: Well yes, I do. As a young man I became interested in investing and I focused on fine gems. Do you have change for the Hope diamond? Rick: Chris, you owe, like, $1843. Christie: Can I charge it to the Koch Brothers?

EDITORIAL

Kudos All Around We’re not ones to pander but it’s time to give it up for our municipal highway crews. This has been an extremely difficult winter thus far. Even the staunchest souls among us have felt the bite of the frigid air and wrestled with the ridiculous accumulations of snow we’ve had to deal with. The highway crews face limitations. There is only so much machinery, so much sand, and so much time. When entire towns have to literally be dug out, it taxes the crews. Many of the workers had a little sleep or respite, and worked diligently even as the rest of us were warned to say inside. Kudos also to the private contractors who plowed the old-filed map roads in East Hampton – which are not serviced by the town, even though property owners pay full highway taxes. (If anyone out there can figure that one out please let us know.)

VOICES

Dear Editor, The Noyac Civic Council is pleased to see that the East Hampton Town Board has taken the initative to tackle the serious problem of aircraft noise, and we wish to thank them for hearing the pleas of those living in neighboring communities. For the last several years, Noyac residents have been vociferous in asking for relief from a problem that disrupts our daily lives. Many NCC members spoke at public meetings encouraging the East Hampton Town Board to remedy this situation. Finally a plan to regulate the noisiest aircraft and the nighttime and early morning operation of noisy aircraft is before the Town Board. The Noyac Civic Council also wishes to thank the Southampton Town representatives on the Noise Abatement Committee, namely, Councilwoman Christina Scalera, Bob Malafronte, and

Barry Holden for working with our East Hampton neighbors to find a workable solution to this problem plaguing the East End. The Noyac Civic Council urges the East Hampton Town Board to control the airport’s noise by regulating the noisiest aircraft and their hours of operation. The NCC asks everyone on the East End who has been annoyed by aircraft noise to attend the March 5 meeting at 4:30 PM at the LTV studio, 75 Industrial Road, East Hampton. We need to show overwhelming support for this legislation. ELENA LORETO, NCC PRESIDENT

Openly Straight Dear Editor, I was thrilled to hear about Amos Goodman running on the Republican ticket for the Suffolk County Legislature as an openly gay candidate. He can count on my vote . . . seriously. I will vote for the man because he’s a Republican, not because he is gay. I didn’t vote for our current

We have not heard any horror stories about gouging by plow owners, though undoubtedly it occurred occasionally. More prevalent were the random acts of kindness -- people out there who cleared the driveways of elderly neighbors and those who couldn’t afford to have it done and asked nothing in return. Our ambulance crews, almost all volunteer, don’t get to stay home when duty calls regardless of the weather. Ditto our firefighters. We owe them our gratitude. Some will say this weather was a cogent reminder why we should flee south for the winter to escape the cold. We say it’s an example of why we love it here, all year long – because of the wonderful people we call our neighbors and friends. We face a record cold snap in the days ahead. Let’s get through it together and hope spring is peeking through the clouds on the other side.

president because he’s a communist whose sympathies lie with Islam and America’s enemies, and he’s an anti-Semite to boot, certainly not because he’s gay, too. I’m also thinking of getting into politics myself, for an unheard of category among Democrats, as an openly straight man. ANDREW BENJAMIN

Deeply Troubling

Dear Editor, We learn that this administration is allowing illegal immigrants, who have not paid into Social Security or paid taxes, to collect the equivalent to our own welfare “Earned Income Credit” - a tax refund from our hard earned and overtaxed income. Why should this be, why isn’t there an outcry? Isn’t it enough that they are flooding our schools and hospitals, causing our states to inch closer to insolvency? Let our legislators know we will not stand for this, not another day. We are Taxed Enough Already! Stop the spending and balance the budget. LYNDA A. W. EDWARDS

To the Editor, It is an outrage and a deeply troubling precedent for the East Hampton Town Board to circumvent the budget committee analysis and ask for public comment before the public even knows what the economic impacts might be. How can the public possibly comment on a plan when no one knows the true economic impacts? This all the more evidence that the East Hampton Town Board does not understand or care about the facts or the economic risks involved. Instead, the board wants to blindly push ahead with their ill-advised plan to effectively close the airport,

Editor’s Note: Unscrupulous individuals are taking advantage of the law by urging immigrants to file tax returns (for a hefty fee, of course). They are allowed to take credit for children under 18 living at their homes even if they are not their own children. Many times they are listing relatives who have never even been to this country – seems the IRS has been told not to check.

Leadership Needed Dear Editor, The President has once again failed to provide the necessary leadership for this nation. His request for Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) against the Islamic State shows that he has failed to carefully evaluate the threat, develop a workable strategy to overcome it, and propose to use all means necessary to achieve success. His justification for the use of force is a grab-bag of statements, with only a vague reference to the “national security interests of the United States” and no attempt to clearly define those interests, nor to consider whether the use of military force is the best approach. Other reasons given to justify intervention describe conditions which exist outside the Middle East (e.g. the depredations of Boko Haram), yet he does not believe they require US intervention elsewhere. Congress, during its hearings on the AUMF, must take the responsibility for debating and deciding what our national interests are and whether the threat requires military force. The President’s “strategy” relies on US air power and ground forces provided by other nations. However, it remains to be seen whether those nations, primarily Iraq,

Is this winter getting to you? Bruce Backlund I do have cabin fever. The cold and the snow doesn’t bother me but the ice has been so bad this year that all the salt I put down doesn’t help a bit. And I like to be outside. But that’s been hard this winter. I like all four seasons. But it’s time for winter to be done. Lakisha Gant With all the ice and snow I’m slipping and sliding all over the place! The kids liked being home from school for a bit and then they were, “OK, we’ve had enough of each other. Time to wrap things up and go back to school. That’s enough winter for me! Lara Sweeny I’ve had enough of the ice, the cold, and the wind. There were three school snow days in a row and lots of late starts. I’ve been doing a lot of baking with the kids to keep everyone sane. And lots of arts & crafts and many, many movies. I am ready for spring. Maureen Walker I’ve had enough. I’m not a big fan of winter. The first snowfall was pretty, but after that, it was enough. The romance is over. It seems like an exceptionally snowy winter. My kids are out building snow forts. It’s been decades since I remember it being bad enough to do that!

will be able to field effective armies. At best, it will take time for them to be equipped and trained, which raises questions about the three year limitation proposed by the President. Military experts, and even high-ranking officers of the armed forces, have declared that US ground forces may be needed, and should be available for use. A good strategy should not assume that all will go well. Rather, it should assume that the difficulties will be greater than

expected and be prepared to deal with them, not placing limits of time or force structure. If the Islamic State is a true threat to our “national security interests” (and I believe a strong case can be made), then our strategy must include possible use of as much military force as necessary to guarantee victory. Victory in the Gulf War of 1991 and the Iraq War of 2003-11 came because American presidents were willing to commit strong US forces, and to augment those forces when necessary. The President has not done his job. It is now time for Congress to fill the gap. They must hold lengthy and extensive hearings, asking the tough questions that the President has chosen to avoid. They must then decide whether the President can be trusted to command effective military action, or if intervention is more likely to be a waste of resources in a lost war. PETER J. THOMAS

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Staying in your routine is just right now because you need that kind of stability to keep from feeling anxious. Your family has been asking for quite a lot lately and this will drain you if you do not retreat, even for a little while, to some kind of sanctuary. Try and eat right, get plenty of sleep, and shake off the bad vibes. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) You are in the spotlight now, so stop feeling sorry for yourself. Sure, you are tired of carrying such a heavy load, but who else could have done it besides you? Everyone will be waiting to hear what you have to say because you always say it fresh and funny, especially once the lights come on. Finish the job and move on. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Being concerned about what is going on is healthy but worrying about it is not. Your attachment to a particular outcome only sets you up to be disappointed and exhausted from trying to make things happen. The best way to get what you want is to be very

clear about it and then put it out of your mind and mouth. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) “Alternative” is the key word now, meaning try a reverse approach, an unexpected slant, and even something that other people may not approve of. You’re going to have to be the pioneer if you don’t want to waste precious time. As a result, you’ll help a lot of people to open up to new ways of thinking and healing. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) You cannot keep going around in circles. It’s not only boring to you but look who else is yawning. Look back at some of those old lists and journals and check out some of your former hopes and dreams. You’ve accomplished many of them but some look silly now. Examine present goals for signs of potential silliness. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You are becoming a nicer and a healthier person in spite of yourself. You realized that nagging and bullying, even in the most nicely

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) A new relationship or friendship is taking up a lot of your time and you are not sure it is worth it. If you just stay in the present and refrain from being too picky, the truth shall be revealed. You are in a learning mode now so take in as much information as you can. Know who you’re talking to before you reveal your secrets. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) You have the ability to bring sunshine to one who needs your light right now, not when you have the time. If they would do the same for you, help them out. You will soon find your phone ringing off the hook but for once, the drama in your life looks pretty tame compared to the chaos all around you. Just listen to them. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21 Take a little rest time to reflect on where you want to go next. This is a time of transition and the choices you make now will affect you for a long time. Things are calming down and you are very focused, so don’t get distracted by buying and selling. Sit outside and write a letter to yourself explaining what you want. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) If you are feeling under the weather it’s because your heart is aching. people inside of you, the positive one. Sure, you’ve been let down, but focus on what you control. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Try something radically new and different. It’s just what the doctor ordered. You have been in a bit of a rut so let someone take you by the hand and drag you on a merry adventure. If your friends cannot get a hold of you this month, that’s OK. You do not need to hear their tales of woe. You are just getting over your own. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) You have been so disciplined lately that it is time to let go and see what happens naturally, without the dubious benefit of your tight control. You will be pleasantly surprised if you loosen up and refrain from making too many plans. In love, bodybuilding, or to achieve success, tension must be followed by release. John Travolta, 1954 He went from John Travolta to John Revolta – and back again. Travolta became a household name for his brash, over-the-top portrayal of Vinnie Barbarino in “Welcome Back Kotter” but the youngster had experience playing a similar role: one of his first jobs was acting in the touring production of Grease. Born and raised in New Jersey, Travolta was always interested in show business and was a talented singer and dancer as well as actor. Travolta parlayed this television success into a starring role in Saturday Night Fever, playing Tony Manero. The film, fueled by soaring soundtrack by the Bee Gees and the explosive growth of the disco movement, was the top grossing movie of 1977. Travolta won raves, and earned Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for Best Actor. Travolta, at 24, was the youngest actor to ever earn a Best Actor Oscar nomination. The following year Travolta was cast in the movie version of Grease – this time in the lead role of Danny Zuko opposite Olivia Newton John. The movie, and the soundtrack – with Travolta singing -- were huge hits. He followed up that film with another commercial success, Urban Cowboy. Inexplicably, Travolta went from hot to cold. Part of it was his own doing – he turned down roles in An Officer and a Gentleman and American Gigolo and reportedly took a role in Pulp Fiction for scale wages hoping to build up his name. It worked big time – Travolta earned another Oscar nomination. He has been back on top ever since, surviving some nasty rumors, the death of his son, and the unwelcome stigma that comes with being a Scientologist. Being married to Kelly Preston undoubtedly helps, as does "Unchain having a BoingMy 707Heart" (literally) inbyhisTina front yard that he is licensed to pilot. Andrews

HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE New York State requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York state Banking Department at 1-877-Bank-NYS or visit the Department’s website at www.banking.state.ny.us FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. Section 1303 NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving the copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you may lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING AN ANSWER WITH THE COURT. The cast of Fiasco Theater's Into The Woods, presented by Roundabout Theatre Company. The Fiasco Theater revival of Into The Woods at The Roundabout Theatre, comes to life chamber music style, albeit with childlike stagecraft – birds of paper, a duster for a hen, a baby bottle for the cow’s utters, and evil in many disguises. Derek McLane’s cacophonous set features piano bellies strung around like circuit boards, mismatched chandeliers, not to mention a bizarre collection of found objects. Amidst the playful ensemble of actors, Andy Grotelueschen’s fetching cow, Milky White, Noah Brody’s venal Wolf and his philandering Prince to Cinderella (Claire Karpen) throw us some surprising hurdles. Still, this production (Matt Castle, Music Director) is all about true voices and the purity of song, and there are so many enchanting ones in this classic by Stephen Sondheim with a book by James Lapine, from the melodic, “Children Should Listen,” to the comic, “Agony,” to the Gilbert and Sullivan-like patter of “Your Fault.” Performed by a single upright piano, the score is the thing in this stripped down production. With an inventive interpretation by Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld (The Baker), it resonates with charm and comic flare. There’s an interesting moment in the Irish Repertory Theatre revival of Hugh Leonard’s Tony Award-winning drama, DA, when Paul O’Brien (Da), grabs a boiling teapot, burning his hands badly, while a pot holder hangs nearby on the kitchen wall. Whether O’Brien’s DA, a brash overbearing father, deserves it or not, the scene is a shocker, and it mirrors, however ironically, his son’s difficulty at grasping the reality of his upbringing in this hostile, strange home, to which he has returned on a rainy Dublin day in the late 1960s. Here, Charlie, (Ciaran O’Rielly is marvelously

adept in the role), has returned for his father’s funeral, when memories of his youth rush back with searing reality. Hurtful memories, especially of his father, promise to follow him to the end of time. As Charlie’s younger self Adam Petherbridge is totally fetching; Sean Gormley creates the iconic presence of his repressive boss; and as his childhood friend, Oliver, John Keating is an oddity. While less well drawn, the women characters are well played by Fiana Toibin, Nicola Murphy and Kristin Griffith. Helmed by Charlotte Moore, DA plumbs the playwright’s reminiscences for their humor as well as their pain. A fierce, coke snorting, narcissistic, and abusive father and famous playwright, Reed Birney (David), bleeds upon the wooden boards in I’m Gonna Pray for You So Hard at the Atlantic Theater Company. In Halley Feiffer’s new play David’s outlook on life is pretty much summed up in the title of his Tony Award winning drama, “Pigs and Promises,” which sounds like his own venomous reflection on the New York theater scene. I t ’s B i r n e y ’s t r a n s f o r m a t i v e performance, turning into a crippled monster who is barely able to sing his remorse that makes for a rip-roaring evening of theater. Sadly, Betty Gilpin (Ella), his daughter and his successor takes over where he left off. Like father like daughter, they simply change places. Through their heated interactions, director Trip Cullman pulls the narrative into tight focus. Ruthless at digging into each other, into their souls, their fears and their demons, Birney and Gilpin are dangerous players on the stage. Mark Wendland designs David’s unrenovated railroad flat and the black box, where I’m Gonna Pray winds up.

An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick. Coming Soon Wild Tales (R) The writer/director Damián Szifron takes us on a dizzying trip that indeed is wild, and there are enough twists and turns to bedazzle even the most skeptical viewer. It’s about all the twists and turns of life – and about what happens when some of us want to get even. New To Theaters Kingsmen: The Secret Service (R) Think of a young James Bond wannabe, and you have the premise for this stylish mystery. Veteran Brits Michael Caine and Colin Firth co-star and Mark Hamill (Star Wars) is back on the big screen. It’s slick, a little too predictable, but worth a look New On DVD Homeland (Season 3) It starts off like many a fading TV series, and then suddenly turns on the afterburners, going from mundane to shocking. Stick with it. Now Playing Fifty Shades Of Grey (R) The kinky international bestseller comes to the big screen and Dakota Johnson, the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, becomes an instant screen siren. Jamie Doran is the “normal” guy into all things sado and them some. It’s not going to play well in Kansas, trust us.

Independent / 20th Century Fox

Kingsmen: The Secret Service

Love, Rosie (R) Should be called, “Say Goodnight, Gracie.” This romantic comedy starring Sam Claflin (Hunger Games) and Lily Collins (The Blind Side), is dreadful, and Collins is, simply put, awful. Did we mention the script sucks? The Voices (R) Ryan Reynolds stars as a loveable yet deranged bizzaro in this odd, little effort that is both a funny comedy and a grisly horror film. Director Marjane Satrapi, is an original talent who makes films that matter. For the viewer, the trick is to figure out why. Anna Kendrick and Jacki Weaver co-star. Timbuktu * (PG-13) Abderrahmane Sissako’s masterpiece about a simple cattle herding family whose lives are turned upside down by religious fundamentalists is one of the best films of this century. The likely winner of the Best Foreign Film Oscar is a must-see. Don’t miss it.

Wanna Be a Cop? On June 13, the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service will offer its entrance exam for police officers. It’s only offered once every four years and, according to EHTPD Chief Michael Sarlo, residents of East Hampton who take the county test are automatically put on the local civil service list as well as the main county list. Visit JOINSCPD.com. In the meantime, an informational seminar will be held at Riverhead Library on March 5 at 7 PM. Sports Sponsored by

Southampton Intermediate School Physical Education Teacher Jayne Katz collaborated with Southampton Hospital’s Ed & Phyllis Davis Wellness Institute during American Heart Month to create a five-week course for students to sample a variety of exercise styles, including: Boot Camp, Pilates, Stretch & Tone, Interval Training, and Zumba. In February, the Wellness Institute’s Certified Fitness Instructors Maureen Lerch and Cristal Schultheis visited a sixth grade class to demonstrate a heart-pumping, Tabata-style interval workout to remind students that heart health starts early.

They Shoot Hunters, Don’t They? By Kitty Merrill

Actually, not so much. With this winter’s hunting season winding down the state Department of Environmental Conservation reports the 2014 hunting season closed with the second lowest number of hunting-related shooting incidents on record. “Hunting is a tradition in New York State that continues to be safely enjoyed by many,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative recognizes all the benefits the sporting community brings to New York’s economy and commends hunters for continuing their safe hunting practices. I thank our hunters for following the safety

guidelines and for making this past year a successful hunting season.” New York’s hunting incident rate (incidents per 100,000 hunters) has fallen by more than 75 percent since the 1960s. The past five-year average is down to 4.3 incidents per 100,000 hunters, compared to 19 per 100,000 in the 1960s. A total of 22 hunting incidents occurred in 2014, including one fatality which occurred while hunting small game. Eight of this year’s accidents were self-inflicted, 11 involved members of the same hunting party and only three occurred where the victim and shooter did not know each other. This was the first year on record without an incident occurring during the spring turkey

season. The lowest total number of hunting incidents in any year occurred in 2013 (19 incidents). All incidents are investigated by trained Environmental Conservation Officers. The findings are used to improve New York’s Hunter Education Course to ensure that the most common causes of incidents are addressed and emphasized during instruction, a release from Martens explained. Only incidents involving firearms, bows, and crossbows are included. Incidents involving tree stand use or other hunter healthrelated mishaps are not. “These declining statistics prove that New York has a safety-conscious generation of hunters. This is due in part to the committed efforts of

more than 2500 volunteer Sportsman Education Instructors who are trained and certified by DEC,” added Commissioner Martens. Sportsman education teaches future sportsmen and sportswomen how to be safe, responsible and ethical hunters and trappers. All courses are offered free of charge. Martens believes every huntingrelated shooting incident is preventable. Many, if not all of last year’s incidents could have been prevented, if only the shooter or victim had followed the primary rules of hunter safety: assume every firearm is loaded, control the firearm muzzle in a safe direction, keep finger off the trigger until ready to fire, identify your target and what lies beyond, and wear hunter orange. The NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing and increasing hunting opportunities in New York State. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails and parking areas. For more information, including the 2014 Hunting Safety Statistics, visit the Sportsman Education Program page on DEC’s website. In other news of guns the Violence Police Center released the results of an analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. The study performed by the Washington-based VPC ranked gun death rates by state. New York State boasts the third lowest gun death rates in the nation, falling behind Hawaii and Massachusetts. Data for 2013 revealed 4.30 deaths per 100,000 people. Connecticut and Rhode Island round out the five states with the lowest number of gun-related deaths. “Each of these states has strong gun violence prevention laws and a lower rate of gun ownership,” a release from VPC opines. The nationwide gun death rate was 10.64 per 100,000. The total number of Americans killed by gunfire rose from 33,563 in 2012 to 33,636 in 2013. By contrast, the gun death rate in the United Kingdom in 2011 was .23 per 100,000. Alaska, where over 60 percent of residents own guns, had the highest gun death rate at 19.59 per 100,000. Louisiana (19.15, with 45 percent gun ownership) and Alabama (17.79 with 57.2 percent gun ownership) ranked second and third highest gun death rates in the nation.

Westhampton Beach Westhampton Beach Elementary School students were treated to a pottery class, taught by visiting artist Clare Bennett, owner of Ceramics & Glass in the Barrens, of Manorville, on February 4. During the class, students not only learned about the geology of clay and what a kiln is, but they also got to make a celestial sun out of clay, which they molded and painted.

SPORTS Bridgehampton Is In, Pierson’s Out INDEPENDENT

By Rick Murphy

The brain trust of the Bridgehampton Killer Bees was more than a bit surprised when they learned last week that Smithtown Christian was awarded a berth in the Suffolk County Class D tournament. After all, Smithtown Christian finished the season with a losing record and lost two encounters to Bridgehampton, both convincingly. Not a problem. Bridgehampton Coach Carl Johnson said he welcomed the competition. Unfortunately for Smithtown Christian, Johnson, who substituted liberally again the Knights during the regular season, kept the pedal to the metal this time around. The result was a demolition. The Bees came out firing Monday

against the Knights, quickly opened up a double-digit lead, and kept attacking for much of the game. The final was 77-34. The game was played at William Floyd High School. Charles Manning Jr., a junior who will doubtless be named to the allcounty team, led the way with 28 points; Tylik Furman recoded 15, Elijah Jackson 13 and Josh Lamison 12. Manning, incidentally, a virtual unknown at the beginning of the season, is attracting major interest from some top Division I college programs, including some from the Big East. The Bees, now 18-1, will play in the New York State Class D Regional finals on March 13. Bridgehampton

is the number one ranked D team in the state. Meanwhile, there is the county tournament, where Bridgehampton will continue to play higher-ranked teams until the Bees finally lose a game. Next up is Stony Brook, the county Class C champion, Saturday at William Floyd High School. Tip off is noon. In the second game of the doubleheader Stony Brook overcame a gutsy effort by the Pierson Whalers, who led by six points early in the fourth quarter, then went cold with the county Class C title on the line despite 20 points by Robbie Evjen. Pierson, playing at home, pounded Southold Thursday to advance to the Class C title game. The Settlers rely on the threepoint shooting of Liam Walker, and the Whalers made it a priority to take that away. The blanket defense worked – Walker was limited to eight points and made only one trey. Pierson exploited another Southold weak point, its lack of height, on the other side of the court. The Whalers went to Evjen and Rob Kushner repeatedly in the paint, and the pair combined for 33 points, 18 from Kushner. Evjen grabbed a game-high 23 rebounds.

Sean Sloane scored nine for the winners and Shayne Johnson led The Settlers (10-9) with 11. Southampton was to play at home against Center Moriches yesterday. The winner will play Babylon for the Class B title at William Floyd. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 PM. In Class A action East Hampton (12-6), the third seed, was scheduled to play Islip (11-7) yesterday. The winner will play the winner of the Amityville v Harborfields matchup Friday on the court of the highest seed. In girls action Pierson has already qualified as the Suffolk County Class C champ and has earned a trip into the State Class C tournament and the overall county tournament. The Lady Whalers will play the County B champs at St. Joseph’s College on February 28. Mattituck (10-9) is alive and well in the B tourney. The Lady Tuckers knocked out Southold 56-36 Friday behind an incredible performance from Courtney Murphy, who scored 30 points. Katie Hoeg added 16 and Liz Dwyer 14. Madison Tabor had 16 for Southold. The Lady Porters finish with a 9-8 mark. Port Jefferson (15-3) routed Mercy (6-12) in the other B quarterfinal game. That earned the Lady Tuckers a gig against Hampton Bays (16-2), the top seed. The B championship is Saturday at 4 PM at St. Josephs.
