IS YOUR CELL PHONE DESTROYING YOUR LIFE? Sometimes our dependence on cell phones can be amusing. The story I’m about to tell you is completely true. Someone I know and love, who shall go nameless, was walking around with a Blackberry when I saw him the other day. “Why did you switch to a Blackberry?” I asked him. “Because of my fat fingers,” was his answer. He said, “I can’t type on an iPhone. So I decided to dictate my emails into my iPhone to Siri, or whatever the hell her name is, and this worked fine until the other day. “I dictated an email to a woman in my office who was unhappy with the direction our company was taking on a project she was involved in. “So, to show my support, I backed her up by dictating this line into the phone: “‘When they see your version I’m sure they will agree with you.’
“But Siri or the iPhone didn’t hear exactly what I said and it typed out: ‘When they see your vagina I’m sure they will agree with you.’ My friend erased the message with trembling hands and went out and bought a Blackberry. That’s a true and funny story about cell phones and their impact on our lives, but I’m more concerned about how cell phones are changing each and every one of us – not necessarily for the better. I bet as you’re reading this you’re holding your iPhone in one hand. You’re connected. We all want to be connected. The thought of being alone, even for a second, now causes panic. What was it like before every man, woman and child had cell phones? I guess we read books. Watched television. Met with friends. Stared at the ceiling late at night and were at peace with ourselves.

Now we own cell phones (and cell phones own us), and we can never go back again. The other day I watched a young woman push her baby carriage across a busy street. Her phone was glued to her ear. She was so deep in conversation that she didn’t notice she was crossing against the light. A taxi came within inches of hitting the carriage and killing her baby. When she heard the squeal of the taxi’s brakes the woman turned and gave the cab driver an angry, hostile look and then – facing straight ahead – continued her conversation and walked across the street, forcing traffic to stop for her. My question is what could that woman have been talking about that was so important she would risk her kid’s life? Are we going mad? Has the cell phone stripped us of common courtesy? Is it my age or have you noticed that people have stopped saying “Sorry” or “Thank you” or “Pardon me.” When did we start acting like zombies, staring at our phones as though the rest of the world has disappeared and our cell phone is our only lifeline to the world? As you’re reading this, millions of photos are being posted and messages are being sent discussing Bruce Jenner turning into Caitlyn in the most over-publicized story of what used to be, in another time, a private matter. And as you’re reading this, another million of pictures of dishes of kale and other foods are being exchanged on Instagram through-

out the world. Were young people able to eat before they took pictures of their food? Pictures of food is their way of telling their friends, “Look, I’m alive, I’m in a restaurant and this is what my life is all about right this second.” We all want to be connected every minute of every day. In my office building, sitting behind the desk in the lobby, is a man whose job I believe is protecting all the people in the building. I call him “The Laughing Man.” He sits there on the phone all day and he laughs uproariously. He never stops laughing. Is someone telling him jokes? Does he ever get bad news? It’s creepy to pass by him. What if there’s a fire in the building? Will he just sit there and laugh as the firemen remove him? Has his cell phone driven him crazy? What was his life like before we had cell phones? Were we that lonely? How did we walk the streets alone without having a tiny instrument that is a connection to everyone we know? What’s going to happen to us? Can you live without social media? I doubt if I can. I’m a slave to Facebook. I’m as guilty as you are. I’m on it every day. Some people I know are never off it. It’s like a phone party line that millions of people are listening in on every day as they scroll and keep up with their friends and have their friends keep up with the antics of their dogs, cats and children. There are no secrets. There is no privacy. I go on Facebook and I’m brought up to date on other people’s visits to doctors, their cousin’s bone marrow transplant and often, just seconds after someone’s loved one has died, they dry their tears and post the news on Facebook. This causes me a problem that I hope some reader might help me with. When I read someone’s sad message on Facebook that says: “My mother died just 3 minutes ago and we were all here for her final moments etc. etc. etc.” How do I acknowledge this? Do I press “Like,” as some other people do on occasion, and does this mean we “like” that this person’s mother has died? If I don’t know the person and their mother, should I comment? They were kind enough to inform me and the billion other Facebook members of the death – would it be cruel to ignore them in this time of need? Those of you with an answer to these questions can, of course, contact me on Facebook or at jerry@dfjp.com.

DA Asked To Look Into LTV Dealings By Rick Murphy
A faction of the LTV board is secretly prepared to offer outgoing director Seth Redlus a compensation package that could pay him $3250 a month, theoretically for the rest of his life. LTV, the local television channel of East Hampton Town, is funded with public money. Robert Strada, the Executive Director of the LTV board, said this week he will notify the Suffolk County Attorney General and ask for an independent audit. He will urge the East Hampton Town Board to do likewise tomorrow. “I am after transparency and accountability,” Strada said Friday. Jim Shelly, a former Executive Director and Treasurer who is now vice chair said Monday the falling out with Strada is about personal matters. He defended Redlus, stating he is being given “a technical consulting job because he knows every inch of the system.” The LTV board is prepared to provide Redlus with a defense and indemnification clause that will provide a level of protection should Redlus be formally charged with any wrongdoing, according to the language of a “Severance and Consultant Agreement” obtained by The Independent. The clause has drawn the ire of Strada and others because Redlus is a central figure not only in at least one ongoing lawsuit – he has also been accused of funneling LTV business to friends and family members and purchasing equipment for his personal use with public funds. He is also alleged to be using the LTV facility and equipment to benefit his own business enterprises and taking considerable amounts of time off beyond his five-week vacation to work outside jobs. “If even a fraction of these allegations prove true, Seth hardly deserves a sweet severance package - he deserves a perp walk,” said Peter Israelson, an LTV board member for 10 years.

Quit Or Fired? Amy Salle was the office/manager bookkeeper at LTV for seven years. She said that after she became suspicious of some of Redlus’s expenditures she was fired by Jim Shelly, the board treasurer at the time, via a 10:30 PM phone call on August 28, 2014. But Shelly told the board that Salle had quit, Israelson said. Salle said Redlus wrote the Continued on Page 32.

Coaching Legend Ed Petrie Passes By Rick Murphy
Ed Petrie, one of the most successful high school basketball coaches in history, died Saturday. Coach, as most people called him, had played golf only two days earlier and appeared to be in good health and spirits. Family members said he suddenly fell ill and was taken to Southampton Hospital where he passed. If the measure of a man is the accolades bestowed upon him, Petrie would certainly rank in the upper echelon. He holds the New York State record for most games won, 754 against only 258 losses, over 52 years. Pe t ri e i s a Fran k Mc Gu i re Foundation honoree. He was named

Top Cops By Kitty Merrill
Last week Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone honored 22 Suffolk County Law Enforcement Officers for making the most DWI arrests in the county. The prestigious ceremony, held at the Suffolk County Police Academy, honored all the officers and awarded one sheriff with the Top Cop award after making 143 arrests this year.“These officers have saved hundreds of lives by making DWI a priority and arresting those individuals who make the irresponsible decision to drink and drive,” said Bellone. “Suffolk County police agencies made over 3,800 arrests in 2014 and more than 14,000 DWI arrests in the past three years.”

Last year in Suffolk County, 45 people were killed by drunk drivers. However, since 2012, there’s been a 25 percent decline in arrests and a 25 percent decline in fatalities. The STOP-DWI program -- Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated -- is a comprehensive program designed to reduce the incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities and injuries in New York State. County governments are empowered by state law to develop and implement a yearly plan of action that addresses impaired enforcement, prosecution, probation, rehabilitation, public information and education. In Suffolk County, the program is 100 percent supported by the fines that are collected from individuals convicted of alcohol and/ or drug related traffic infractions.

WHICH ONE IS THE CADILLAC DRIVER? Actually, it’s all of them. Which is pretty different from back in the day, when people had very specific ideas about who drove a Cadillac – and who didn’t.
WE COULDN’T TELL, EITHER! In fact, the only sure thing these drivers have in common is their shared appreciation of today’s Cadillac. That means innovative styling, high performance, low maintenance and knowing they’re driving America’s contribution to the world’s best cars.

Greenport Tall Ships On The Horizon The tall ships will dock in Greenport this summer, over July Fourth weekend. The village will welcome six tall ships, including the guest of honor, the Hermione. The Hermione brought Lafayette to the aid of General George Washington, which turned the tide in the American Revolution. The frigate will be travelling from France to participate. The 2015 Tall Ships Challenge
Sailing Festival is designed to highlight Greenport’s heritage as a major whaling port, shipbuilding hub, and maritime community. Reportedly, more than 60,000 visitors were drawn to Greenport the last time the village hosted tall ships. The challenge is a series of international sailing races, cruises and festivals organized by the group Tall Ships America. The ships are crewed by young people and adults, supervised by a captain and professional sailors.

SoFo Talks Climate By Emily Toy
Independent / James J. Mackin
East Hampton Bowl will be replaced by a “traditional” structure by new owner Jeffrey Suchman and used as retail space. It opened 65 years ago.
This Saturday, the South Fork Natural History Museum hosts its first annual Climate Change Forum. Titled “Climate Change: What It Means for the East End,” the event intends to share research and discuss creative solutions related to global climate change impacts on the East End, focusing on marine environments, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation. The benefit will raise money for new climate change programming at SoFo, set to launch this fall. Saturday’s event will feature wine donated by Channing Daughters Winery and beer donated by the

Montauk Brewing Company. The cocktail reception will be from 5 to 6 PM. Immediately following that, will be a panel discussion from 6 to 7 PM, featuring renowned environmental leaders. And who are some of those leaders? One is Peter Boyd, a senior advisor on climate for the B Team, also launched The Time4Good Group in October of last week. Be sure to count in Assemblyman Steve Englebright. Thirty years ago, Englebright helped lead the effort to preserve the Long Island Pine Barrens and is credited with articulating the connection between the preservation of the Pine Barrens ecosystem and protection of the sole source aquifer, which it overlays as a public health imperative to safeguard the drinking water of 1.5 million. Others include Michael B. Gerrard, Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia Law School and director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, and Jack Rivkin, Chief Investment Officer of Altegris Group, an organization with lots of involvement with the climate change movement. Rivkin also maintains a blog on climate change and is also involved with a variety of clean technology startups. Carl Safina is slated as another speaker at Saturday’s event. Recently, Safina was named by Audubon Magazine as one among “100 Notable Conservationists of the 20th Century.” Safina has written features in The New York Times and National Geographic about how the ocean is changing, while also serving on he board of SoFo. They’ll be two familiar faces at Saturday’s shindig. The first is Robby Stein, a trustee for Sag Harbor Village, has served as the liaison to the waste water management plant, Harbors and Docks, and Parks. The second: Assemblyman Fred Thiele, a lifelong resident of Sag Harbor, who’s served New York’s 1st Assembly for two decades.
www.applebank.com *For the Apple Bank BONUS Savings account, interest earned on daily balances of $2,500 or more at these tiers: $2,500-$24,999: .10% Annual Percentage Yield (APY), $25,000 and up: .75% APY. There is no interest paid on balances of $0-$2,499. APYs disclosed effective as of January 6, 2015. APYs may be changed at any time at the Bank’s discretion. There is a minimum of $2,500 required to open the Apple Bank BONUS Savings account. $2,500 minimum daily balance is required to avoid $10 monthly maintenance fee. Fees may reduce earnings. Funds used to open this account cannot be from an existing Apple Bank account. Maximum deposit amount is $1,000,000 per household. **Special bonus feature: A .25% simple interest rate bonus will be paid on each anniversary date of account opening on the lowest balance for that year (anniversary date to anniversary date). No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. The bonus interest is calculated on the lowest balance on deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2015 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2015. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2016 anniversary date. The low balance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on January 12, 2016.

RICK’S SPACE Memorial Day, 1960
When I was a kid in Sag Harbor things were a lot different than they are now, that’s for sure, but one thing remains the same: Memorial Day weekend was the kick-off to summer. Our house was at the foot of Howard Street, on the south side. After Papa got too old to stay yearround we’d board up the old house for the winter and he’d come live with the family in Brooklyn. In May, my mom and her sisters would be busy cleaning up the house --there were mice in there, of course, getting it ready for the summer. By
Monday things were more or less in order and we’d walk up the hill to see the parade. The mayor and village officials would usually ride in a convertible near the front. Then there would be the veterans, some with a limp or a cane; they seemed so old to me. Then the fire trucks, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the school marching band, and bringing up the rear were the zany folks from the North Sea Fire Department who would dress up as bums and squirt water at the crowd. This year the first thing I noticed was the veterans — they were all my

friends. We were little boys together. Back then weekday summer mornings were spent at Park School at Mashashimuet Park. The girls would do crafts (my sister made, like, a million pot holders) and the boys would play baseball. When it rained we sat under the big grandstand and played knock-hockey, but the truth was we’d try to talk Coach into letting us out on the field to play no matter how bad the weather was. Coach? He was a young gym teacher at Pierson. His name was Ed Petrie. Usually, unless there was lightning, we’d wear him down and he’d let us play, watching with that bemused smile on his face as we played the part of major leaguers right down to the spitting and the scratching. I think he kind of liked me because I was brash and loud even though I weighed about 86 pounds. After Park School we’d spend afternoons playing baseball in all its variations -- Whiffle ball, stickball,

spongeball. I’d usually go to bed with my prized possession, a little transistor radio I got for my Confirmation. In my tiny bedroom in that creaky 200 year-old house, I’d tune in to the Yankees game and crawl under the blanket I’d fashioned into a makeshift tent. Sometimes, if the Yankees played a day game, I’d ever so carefully turn the dial of the radio, absorbing the painful static, and if I was lucky I’d catch a feed from some far away ballpark somewhere in mid-America . . . Chicago . . . St. Louis . . . Cincinnati. I’d fall asleep, burn out the battery, and have to scrounge for money for another the next day. The crickets blared all night as if they were under my bed. I found out years later they were – along with a mouse or two. We would go to the movies one night a week. We’d ride our bikes there and just leave them piled out front. It cost 15 cents, 25 for “adults” over 12. I don’t recall ever paying a full quarter, even when I was 18. That’s where I went for my first date – the movie was Bye Bye Birdie and the two hot fudge sundaes were 35 cents each. I counted the money in my pocket about 40 times, deathly fearful of the embarrassment it would cause if I couldn’t handle the check. Forty years before me, my mom walked the same steps, from the house on Howard to the Paradise. That’s Sag Harbor. The worst day of the year was always the day after Labor Day, when it was time to head back to Brooklyn. I remember one year I took a bag of Sag Harbor dirt home, content to stash it under my Brooklyn bed, believing I’d be able to capture the smell of the country. My mom found it and threw it out. I felt like crying, but, of course, Mickey Mantle didn’t cry. That’s when I vowed that someday, when I grew up, I would move back to the country and never leave again. Yeah, it’s still paradise. There are a lot more condos and Range Rovers, but I’ll take it over Flatbush any day. I still have our original Post Office Box from Sag Harbor, #874. My girlfriends from the city would write me letters during the summer. My mom told me my dad used to send her love letters when they were courting. My grandmother, who died before I was born, sent my grandfather letters from Italy when he came here at the turn century to make a name for himself, leaving his wife and infant daughter in the “Old Country.” One hundred years ago, he’d go downtown and excitedly turn that same combination lock like we were all destined to do, hoping there would be a letter from his loved one: 11 left, 26 right, and back around to six. It still works. Every now and then I open it, just to check. My heart always beats faster, just as I’m sure mom’s did, and her dad’s before her.

Insight
This has already been the most surprising local Hamptons election year in memory, and it’s just beginning. The big news, of course, is Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst opting out of a final stint to challenge for Lee Zeldin’s Congressional seat next year. Let’s face it – Throne-Holst could have easily ran and won and gotten paid for the next two years. Her decision not to is more than gutsy –it’s honorable, and frankly we can’t think of too many politicians who would have done the same. It is in essence an election where old becomes new – Former East Hampton Town Supervisor and current County Legislator Jay Schneiderman is running for Throne-Holst’s seat, and current Southampton Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming is going for Schneiderman’s seat. And let’s not forget former East Hampton Councilman Tom Knobel, who is running for Supervisor. Then there are the newbies, Nancy Keeshan (EH Town Board) Richard Yastrzemski (SH Supervisor) and Damon Hagan, John Bouvier, and Julie Hofstad, all running for Southampton Town Board, and Amos Goodman, who will oppose Fleming. Lee Czajka, who originally planned to run for East Hampton Town Board on the Republican line, decided against it a week after getting the nomination, adding more intrigue. And, it’s still too early to rule out primary battles. There is a lot on the line, hereabouts, but nothing more urgent than the pollution of our waters and the erosion of our shoreline. More than ever we must choose candidates who steer away from party patronage, who reward cronies with jobs, and who act on behalf of contributors instead of voters. Make it your business to learn the facts and get informed. Make sure your vote really matters, this year more than ever.

Consummate Pro Dear Rick, I just learned of Coach Ed Petrie ‘s passing. I knew him as a quiet, talented man who coached my son Scott to an East Hampton High State Basketball
Championship. He coached my grandson Matthew and may have been grandson Brian’s coach as well. Coach Petrie not only understood basketball but also understood the longterm values of discipline, team play, and the functions of both cooperation and competition. His death saddens me; more and more old timers are leaving us. I am grateful to him for passing along his exemplary standards to the youngsters he coached. To my mind, Coach Ed Petrie was a consummate pro. I am lucky to have known him. LONA RUBENSTEIN

They are currently working on a field guide that documents the hundreds of species they observed. Dr. McKeon and his research colleagues met with the students this past week to lend their expertise in identifying and documenting the marine organisms using advanced techniques including DNA extraction and sequencing. The field guide, which the team agreed to share with the Solomon Islands government, may have a significant impact on the country’s future biodiversity studies, because there is currently no recognized academic source for information about marine species in the islands. He played on back-to-back county championship teams at F.E. Bellows High School (now Rye Neck High) in Westchester County and was captain of the 1951 team. He scored over 1000 points, including a 51-point game against Pleasantville High School. He played his collegiate ball at Seton Hall, where he was captain. When the NBA had only eight teams, Petrie was drafted by the Knicks and later traded for Slater Martin. He came to Pierson as a gym teacher and coach in 1959. His 1968 team was one of his best, losing only to Southampton, which was in the midst of a state record 68 game-winning streak. It was the only time in history two East End schools played for the county title. Some of his strongest teams were in the pre-state tournament era; East Hampton was 62-4 from 197578 and won a regional title in 1977. He helped coach the Bridgehampton Killer Bees to a state title in 1979 when East Hampton, on an austerity

Bonac, undermanned and playing against taller opponents and bigger schools, won two overall county championships and two Long Island championships in a row. In 2007-2008 East Hampton (21-1) faced off against Half Hollow
Hills (20-1) in what was dubbed the “Battle of Jericho.” Petrie devised a defense to confound Tobias Harris, a six-footeight-inch All American who in now an NBA all-star. Harris scored all of two points in the first half and East Hampton went on a 28-9 run to take control of the game. His so-called “Combo” – two man box, three man zone, has since become part of the lexicon of the game. Mikey Russell, Petrie’s grandson was the Long Island Player of the

As always, Petrie deflected praise. “The kids deserve all the credit,” he told The Independent. Petrie also coached his sons, Ed and Mike, both of whom were allstars. They survive along with two daughters, Cynthia and Miriam. The family has suggested donations in his honor be made to the Animal Rescue Fund in Wainscott. (Bobby Vacca contributed to this story.)

Strada received a letter signed by six board members demanding his resignation –one of the alleged signees, Pat Schutte, who Strada said resigned a year earlier. Shelly said Schutte moved away and announced his intention to resign but never submitted it in writing. Redlus, meanwhile, has moved to Austin, Texas, yet he will continue to “be responsible for the daily and nightly management of both channel 20 and 22” according to the terms of his new contract. He will also be allowed to bill LTV for expenses, and LTV will agree to provide liability insurance. Either party, if it goes into effect, can

terminate the agreement with 90 days notice. He will also receive unused vacation and sick time in a lump sum payout. “LTV isn’t that complicated to run that it needs to have Seth advise all the way from Texas where he can’t reasonably have a hands on contact,” Strada said. The Town of East Hampton conducted an audit of LTV books before agreeing to renew its fiveyear agreement two years ago. Salle said “I have never seen Seth more nervous.” The town was to provide ongoing oversight, but its attention has waned. The board’s liaison to LTV is Peter Van Scoyoc, who seldom attends LTV board meetings, Strada said. Strada said East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell, briefed of the allegations, also seemed hesitant to act on them. The perception is town officials really don’t want another scandal during an election season. Strada said in the past the town’s once a year review has been cursory at best, which is why he is demanding an independent probe. Van Scoyoc said he “attended a

few meetings” but does not get involved in the internal affairs of the LTV board members. “If something isn’t on the up and up we’ll look into it.”
Hard To Access Originally founded to allow community members to use the airwaves, critics say LTV has become increasingly harder to access under Redlus. The number of independent producers have halved, and some of those remaining have ties to LTV, its board members, or employees, critics said. “Look, Seth can be his own worst enemy,” Shelly said. Salle said Redlus spent a fortune on GPS key fobs that can track employees and limit their access to files and rooms in the facility, Salle said. Shelly said the keys, while sophisticated, aren’t satellite guided, and that they were necessary to keep tabs on the facility. Critics fear Redlus has installed proprietary hardware that no one else has fully mastered. “Seth allegedly ran LTV as his own private Seth Redlus Land with Seth as a kind of power-crazy Wizard of Oz-style mogul,” Israelson said. “It’s Seth and only Seth in manic control.” Shelly acknowledged that LTV doesn’t have anyone with the technical expertise needed to run the system and will have to hire a full time technician. “I want to be clear that it is the board as a whole which sets policy, but given my personal liability as Director and Chairman, I have every right to speak up about a severance and consulting package which is excessive and seems to be preferential and unreasonable,” Strada said. Salle said there were rumors that Seth kept a second set of books. Strada said he has no direct knowledge of that. “As long as I’ve been president Jim Shelly has been the treasurer and we’ve had the same accountant.”

“He’s been the LTV Treasurer forever,” Israelson said of Shelly. “Yet when Robert Strata asked for more fiscal transparency, things got really strange. And fast. Instead of answers, Strada got the boot. Jim freaked out.” “We objected to calling in an outside forensic accounting firm because they have no idea of the checks and balances we use,” Shelly said. If the town thinks one is needed, Shelly said he will pay for it. Shelly had previously been an unabashed supporter of Strada’s. “Robert is the chairman because the LTV board feels he does a great job and wants to keep him. We vote him back into office every year,” he wrote to the East Hampton Star in 2012. “We have instructed our independent auditors to review the audit report from LTV and contact their accountants,” East Hampton Town Budget Officer Len Bernard said Friday. ”We are going to take a look at this.” Ironically, LTV is now attempting to cancel an annual show Strada hosts featuring East End politicians scheduled for June 5 -- despite the fact LTV’s charter mission is to provide airtime for local citizens who wish to avail themselves of the facility. “The inmates have taken over the asylum,” Strada said. One night last week LTV insiders loyal to Redlus gathered at The Palm for a lavish farewell dinner. Strada, once his biggest ally, wasn’t invited. The Independent has FOILed LTV to provide detailed receipts for every credit card issued to LTV or an employee and paid for by LTV. “As per our lawyer, I cannot supply what you wish for because Local T.V., Inc. is not an ‘agency’ within the meaning of Public Officers Law section 87 and is not subject to the Freedom of Information Law,” responded Morgan Vaughan, the LTV Interim Executive Director. Shelly said he will voluntarily allow The Independent to review the expenditures.

National Anthem for their peers and members of Sag Harbor Whalers during Morning Program on Friday. On Sunday, the small choir kicked off the start of baseball season at Mashashimuet Park just before the Whalers took on the Shelter Island Bucks. Friends and family members of Sag Harbor Elementary School kindergartners delighted in the students’ performance, “Exploring our Local Ecosystems: Pond, Bay, Forest” last Friday. The annual performance featured students from Kate Montaldo’s class, which portrayed the pond; Nina Landi’s class, which characterized the bay; and Susan Raebeck’s class, which represented the forest. All of the students, dressed in costume, entertained the crowd with a variety of songs and skits.

Play Bridge My partner, Larry Hillel, and I played this hand last week at the Water Mill Bridge Club. Perhaps I was too ambitious as East to try for slam but Larry played the hand very well after a helpful lead from North. He knew he would lose the ace of diamonds and could not take the chance of losing a finesse to the club king. South next led a heart, which Larry won. He drew trumps in three rounds and played the king of diamonds on which he discarded the six of clubs. Then he started the spades. Fortunately they divided 3-3. On my fourth spade, he discarded his last club. Now he could trump the last club in dummy with his last small trump. Basically, he noted that he had a better chance of making his slam by treating his own hand as the

The Mattituck boys’ baseball team, like a finely tuned engine, is purring on all cylinders. The Tuckers cruised through the Suffolk County Class B playoffs, culminating in a two game sweep of Babylon, and now play for the Long Island championship Friday. It would be the second title in a row for the locals, now an ungodly 23-1. Mattituck eliminated Babylon last Wednesday 11-6. It was a case of the stronger Tuckers pounding a game Babylon team into submission. Chris Dwyer led the assault with four hits in as many at bats including two doubles, three runs scored, and four ribbies. Joe Tardif added three hits and scored
three times. Marcos Perivolaris recorded the win. Credit the Panthers for hanging tough – they scored four times in the fifth to close the gap to three runs, only to be thwarted by RBI hits by Tardif and Ian Nish the following inning. Babylon, the second seed, finished 18-6. The Panthers handed the Tuckers the their only loss of the year. A day earlier, playing at home, the Tuckers grabbed the first of the best of three series by blanking Babylon 7-0. Tardif was virtually unhittable on the mound, and Nish went 2-3 with a pair of ribs. The Tuckers now turn their attention to Oyster Bay, the defending Nassau B champ. The

Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica
Commodore, First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard
Hard Aground! Now What? When I teach seamanship courses to private boaters on the South Shore, I note that, if you boat in our local waters and have never run aground, you’re lying. Even USCG regulars have been known to “touch bottom” at times in these waters. So, the issue is not if you run aground but what you do afterwards. What To Do First? There are a couple of things to do right away. First, determine if the grounding has caused a leak. Even sand, if you hit it hard enough, will stove in a hull (or a through-hull fitting or a drive shaft fitting through a stuffing box.) While the water obviously isn’t very deep right where you are, if your hull starts to fill with water, she may slide into deeper water and now problems will start to escalate. At roughly the same time, get everyone into life jackets. You’re the skipper and are responsible for the safety of everyone on that vessel. Next, check your tide charts and determine if time is an ally or an enemy, i.e., if the tide is rising (the rising tide lifts all boats said John Kennedy) or falling. If it is falling, time is now working against you.
Now What? At this point, you know if the boat has sprung a leak (if so, get right on VHF-16 and hail the USCG; get the “rescue starts now” clock ticking asap); you have everyone in life jackets and you know if you will be helped by time or not. This should have taken you less than one minute. If the hull isn’t leaking, try backing away the way you came in. Increase throttle moderately and keep turning the wheel back and forth, port to starboard and back again. Why? Well, to some degree, it is like rocking a car in the snow. Sand and boats can get into a very powerful embrace caused by suction of the wet sand and a smooth surface of a boat’s hull. But perhaps more important, you are sending sand from the stern directly forward – increasing the “hump” that you have to float over. By turning the wheel, you’ll break the suction and spread the sand around. Be conscious of what is behind you because, if you suddenly break free, you don’t want to go flying into a busy seaway. Assuming this is working, it is quite

possible that you will find yourself making more progress when the wheel is to one side or the other. Once you see the stern making more way down one exit path then the other, make that your new centering path. In short, don’t waste time and fuel trying to back down a path that isn’t getting you anywhere – but don’t fail to sway the helm back and forth down your new exit path or you may fill it with sand and ruin your escape. Most times, this will get you out. I’m Free – Or Am I? If it does, unless you got out pretty quickly and easily, I would head for the marina and get a hose on that engine and start to wash out the sand. I’d also have somebody look at the running gear. A small nick in a prop can do a lot of damage to an engine’s “innards” because the running gear is no longer balanced. At a minimum, get the boat somewhere where you can get a water hose on the engine and flush it – with the engine OFF. If there is sand in there, don’t grind it out of your engine. Wash it out. What if you are at this for 4-5 minutes and nothing is happening? Well, if the tide is against you, and you have towing insurance, call for help. Any more time wasted and you might be spending the night. The commercial towers are well equipped and largely well-trained. (You DON’T have towing insurance? Think again, bunky. It is the cheapest insurance that you will use.) Get familiar with the differences between “salvage” and a simple tow, especially if you don’t have contracted commercial insurance. Maritime law is complex. But what if the tide is with you? Well, you can still call for help but you also have an opportunity to engage in some seamanship that might hold you in good stead sometime in the future when you have more difficult circumstances in hand. How about putting an anchor out towards the deeper water and “kedging”, i.e., pulling yourself along it from the bow? You are introducing a new angle of pressure and that might pull you free or at least loosen the bottom-suction. At a minimum, as the tide rises, it will keep you from being blown higher on to the beach by the wind. If your boat is big enough to have a tender (dinghy), get it to work pushing the boat. Think like what you are. A sea captain. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@ aol.com or go direct to the D1SR Human Resources department, who are in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing . . . ”
