A Hamptons Happening Feast Betsey Johnson, David Burke, and Paul Ridley.

By Jessica Mackin

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation will honor luminaries from the worlds of cuisine, fashion, and philanthropy at its tenth annual “A Hamptons Happening Feast” cancer research fundraiser on Saturday evening in Bridgehampton from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. The event will feature celebrity chef David Burke, iconic fashion designer Betsey Johnson, and philanthropist Paul Ridley, co-founder of the cancer research nonprofit Row For Hope. WCBS-TV Channel 2 News anchor Chris Wragge will emcee the event for the third consecutive year. The fête will take place at the Bridgehampton home of Maria and Kenneth Fishel. The evening comes together with the combined efforts of event co-founders Marion Waxman and Laurie Schaffran, raffle chairperson Jennifer Myles, journal chairperson Erica Fineberg, and co-chairpersons Jennifer Gould Keil and Jill and Bobby Zarin. The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is an international organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer, a mission that can resonate with everyone. All people, in one way or another, have been touched by cancer. “A nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center once told me that cancer is not just a disease. It is an epidemic,” said co-chair Keil, a New York Post columnist. “Sadly, everyone I know has lost someone they love to cancer,” Keil said as she described her heartbreaking experiences with the disease. “My husband, Braden, died of melanoma in 2009 when our children were just three and five years old. I then lost both my parents to cancer.” The Foundation is a pioneer in cancer research and its mission is to eradicate cancer by funding cuttingedge research that identifies and corrects abnormal gene function that causes cancer and develops minimally toxic treatments for patients. “Every year, cancer research brings us closer to a cure,” stated Keil. “The people who dedicate their lives to finding that cure are on the frontline. They are our warriors and heroes, our

first line of defense in the fight against cancer. We need to support them as much as we can. There are so many people on the East End who have been blessed with so much good fortune. This is a wonderful way for people to give back. Folks can feel good knowing that they are truly making a difference.” T h r o u g h t h e F o u n d a t i o n ’s collaborative group of world-class scientists, the Institute Without Walls, investigators share information and tools to speed the pace of cancer research. "We hope to bring awareness to the importance of supporting cancer research. It is the only hope for curing this disease," said co-founder Marion Waxman. Since its inception in 1976, the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation has awarded over $85 million to support the work of more than 200 researchers across the globe. “In a season of sparkling charity events, the Hamptons Happening is truly the jewel in the crown,” remarked event co-founder Schaffran. “The moderately priced ticket allows us to introduce the work of the Foundation to people of all ages and financial means, so we hope to see many new faces,” continued Schaffran. “We can promise [guests] an elegant and spirited evening of nonstop sensational food, free flowing wine and spirits, an exciting live auction, and a celebrity DJ.” Music for the evening will be provided by crowd favorite DJ Phresh of the 4AM DJ group. The auction, both silent and live, will be filled with once-in-a-lifetime packages. Schaffran continued, “We are thrilled to welcome David Burke who will be preparing a selection of his culinary specialities.” "We are looking for ward to welcoming guests to a wonderful evening with 30 celebrity chefs, an amazing auction, while they celebrate collaborating for a cure," said Marion Waxman. Make sure you arrive to the feast with a big appetite. Local chefs include Chef Mathias Brogie of The Living Room at c/o The Maidstone, Peter Ambrose, Chef Greg Grossman of Georgica, Chef Chris Coleman, Chef Todd Jacobs

It doesn’t stop there, guests will also leave with gift bags filled to the brim with goodies. Have no fear once the clock strikes 9:30, the party continues just down the road. A millennial after party will be hosted at Red Stix in Water Mill following the event. The after party is chaired by Ally Shapiro, Joanna Wexler, Bradley Fishel, and Melissa Fishel, four extraordinary young leaders on the quest for a cure. Melissa Fishel recalls how her family became involved with the foundation. “I was introduced to the Waxman’s through my parents about three to four years ago. My father volunteered our property as a venue for the Waxman event because the cause has a place

close to my father's heart. Both of his parents died fairly young from cancer and he felt that this was, in a way, a godsend to benefit and learn about Cancer Research.” Wrist bands for the after party will be distributed at the door of the Hamptons Happening event and will include an open bar from 10 to 11 PM with cocktails provided by Pampelonne, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Brewery Ommegang. A cash bar will continue from 11 PM to close. Individual tickets to Hamptons Happening are $300. Millennial tickets (attendees 30 years old and under) are $175 and include admission to the Hamptons Happening. Both tickets include admission to the after party at Red Stix. Horoscope

East End Libraries

By Kitty Merrill

by Kate Plumb

July 23-29

Read your rising sign if you know it; or any other sign, as each of us has Aries, Taurus etc. someplace in our charts governing some aspect of our lives.

ARIES (March 21- April 20) – As Jupiter changed signs last night into Leo and into your 5th house of children, recreational pleasures, sports, creative activities, the theater, love affairs, speculation and gambling, the next year should be full with much expansion, growth and good fortune in those areas. This depends, of course, upon how much pleasure you can take in, as seen by the condition of your natal Jupiter. Some of us are born with good luck, confidence and a natural faith in ourselves, others of us have to fake it until we make it. TAURUS (April 20-May 21) – Your ruler Venus is in Cancer this week, as we wind down the month to meet the New Moon in Leo at 6:42 PM on Saturday, which brings to focus home and family affairs. You are at the bottom of the yearly cycle, when strengthening the foundation of your life, whether that means buying a house, repairing your existing home, spending time with your family, or staying home in the hammock reading, the focus is inward towards recharging your batteries. Expect some leftover fireworks over the weekend as Venus runs into Pluto the planet of power shifts, passion, and attempted manipulations. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) – Mercury is busy as the week begins supporting your need to think “outside the box.” Do not be surprised if a monkey wrench is thrown into the works, as someone changes his/her mind or news comes that upsets things. Affairs should stabilize quickly though. Mercury meets both the planet of destabilization then stabilization in quick succession. The New Moon Saturday evening is a boon to sibling and neighborly relations or to your writing/educational projects. CANCER (June 21-July 20) – Mercury, the planet of thoughts and communicating those thoughts and Venus, the planet of love and values, are both in your sign this week. Hopefully your words can express your feelings with sensitivity -- for most of us often hard to do. The New Moon on Saturday evening begins a month of focusing on your 2nd house of income and livelihood. With Jupiter there too (for a year) you can expect to begin a project this week or month that greatly increases your physical bank account or self worth/ confidence bank account. One does not always know what level things will work out on-ideally both. LEO (July 20-Aug. 21) – Once a year you have a New Moon in your sign. A New Moon, or new beginning, is that moment when the Sun and Moon merge for an instant. We never see it, as the Sun swallows the Moon completely; we only begin to see it as the Moon moves away from the Sun a few days later, as seen in the crescent Moon in the evening sky. New beginnings are often like that, not noticed at first and realized only later in hindsight. Rest assured that you will notice this year (until August 2015) as you have the added bonus of having the planet of expansion, faith, confidence, luck and creativity in Leo too. The seeds are sown this week for more of your light to shine. VIRGO (Aug. 21-Sept. 21) – Watch nervous strain as the week begins and Mercury connects with the combination of planets that has been known to cause the most upset in human affairs. The forces of moving forward unexpectedly and the force of stability and the status quo are vying for supremacy; disruptions followed by a solution calling for more responsibility and discipline. Use Neptune the planet of surrender, very strong now for those born from the 23rd-29th of August any year, to gain a spiritual perspective. You might not understand it all. LIBRA (Sept. 21-Oct. 20) - Mars leaves your sign Friday night just before the New Moon Saturday evening,

after a long seven month sojourn, usually only seven weeks. Mars might have been disrupting your placid, peaceful, and balanced life. Now he moves onto Scorpio, where he is more welcome. The New Moon in Leo awakens your 11th house of friends, groups and organizations, hopes and wishes and gains from your career. It is one of the fortunate houses. The New Moon, new beginning in the above affairs coupled with the transit of Jupiter, the planet of abundance, also moving through this house now means good fortune is on its way, especially welcome after the long transit of the upsetting god of war, Mars. SCORPIO (Oct. 20-Nov. 21) – The biggie for you this week is Mars entering your sign Friday night just before the New Moon on Saturday. This is a big switch as Mars the planet of energy, anger, drive, assertion, will force and physical exertion will be in your sign until mid-September stirring you into passionate action which might involve a joint business or monetary deal. Watch what begins in your career house this week with the New Moon in Leo as it will lead to something, not always visible at first, which will require persistence to see through. Jupiter is up there, too-opportunities abound. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21-Dec. 21) – The New Moon Saturday evening shines on your 9th house of foreign affairs; and with Jupiter up there, too, voyaging around the world either literal or virtual is in the realm of possibilities. Planets shifting signs also shift departments of life where they are operating. Jupiter left your house of joint finances and unearned income where it has been for a year. It now wants you to expand globally; maybe some of that extra money you now have can be used to take that long desired course or adventure abroad. CAPRICORN (Dec 21-Jan 20) – Your ruler Saturn is moving forward very slowly now. There is energy around for you to remember what it is that you were born to be known for. The monthly New Moon is in your 8th house of joint monetary affairs, concerns with taxes, wills, insurance, and affairs of the dead; also the psychological transformations we go through when we are in deep relationship with ourselves, through psychotherapy or with others as we get involved more deeply through combining finances or sexual intimacy. The New Moon has the planet of expansion and growth, Jupiter, with it, so augurs well for benefits coming to you from the above list. As Jupiter will be in this area for a year you have added time for the benefits to accumulate, accompanied by some crisis, pain or loss. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 20) – Your two ruling planets are still in that very awkward relationship as this week begins. Something inside wants to shift but another part of you does not. Adjustments have to be made between the freedom that you know comes from letting go and the fear that comes up when we think about doing that. The New Moon is in the house of partners and open enemies. Expect to widen your horizon this week by opening yourself up to enlarge your circle of friends. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 21) – Your planetary ruler Jupiter has the most powerful magnetic field in our solar system. It also radiates more heat than it receives from the Sun. Jupiter symbolizes faith in ourselves, faith in the process of life, the confidence that knows that what we do can make a difference and faith in the inherent abundance in the universe, there is enough for all. Use these qualities that your planet represents this week to see the big picture. Einstein was a Pisces. The

Reel Deal

By Miles X. Logan

Coming Soon The Fluffy Movie (PG-13) Ever hear of Gabriel Iglesias? You will. He’s a very funny guy, as this documentary aptly demonstrates.

Independent / Courtesy Focus Films

New To Theaters Wish I Was Here (R) Ever hear of the TV show “Thirtysomething?” Zach Braff (Garden State) wrote and directed this effort about, yeah, a 30s guy forced to examine his life’s choices. The guy is played by – wait for it – Zach Braff. Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin and Josh Gad costar. Look for a funny turn from Joey King. New On DVD Rio 2 Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg et al are back and the kids loved them both. If yours haven’t seen the new one, by all means plan a night around it. Listen for Westhampton Beach’s Oscar/Emmy/ Tony winner Rita Moreno. Now Playing Dawn of The Planet of the Apes (PG-13) Another One? Really? Really. And it isn’t half bad. In this installment the apes move to DUMBO, open up a latte bar, become metrosexuals and get in a bidding frenzy over a glassfilled one bedroom overlooking the river. Caesar and Daisy argue over a summer share house and Oscar opens an art gallery. Gary Oldman as the hairdresser; Keri Russell plays the Pilates instructor. Naw, we’re kidding -- it’s really about highlyevolved apes fighting subservient

human survivors, but you kind of knew that already, right? Sex Tape (R) Jake Kasdan (Lawrence’s son), a member of the lucky sperm club, weighs in with the tale of a married couple who make a sex tape to rekindle their passion. You guessed it, the tape goes viral and the two kids are really embarrassed. Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal do their best with what they have, and Diaz looks absolutely fabulous. Rob Lowe, Rob Corddry, and Jack Black mine for laughs with some success. Boyhood (R) Richard Linklater’s (Before Midnight) lens focuses on a boy growing up — literally. Young Ellar Coltrane ages before our eyes, providing an intimate look at the childhood experience. Linklater’s muse Ethan Hawke plays the father and Patricia Arquette is the mother. It’s an ambitious miss – the film, nearly three hours long, rambles and the audience ultimately wishes the kid would grow up already. Hercules (NR) Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a natural for the title role in this big budget retro-fantasy. The director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour 2,3) sticks to the traditional plot and has wisely employed a slew of Hollywood’s best actors to bring the story to live. This is a probable summer smash. Co-starring Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt, and featuring a cast of thousands. Earth To Echo (PG-13) A group of friends whose neighborhood is being torn down is about to be separated forever when they start receiving strange signals on their mobile devices. Further investigation reveals – ta da — a cute little alien who needs help. Anyone thinking ET? Get the little weird-looking thing a freaking bicycle and let’s move on.

Stephanie Seymour, 1968 Seeing one of the world’s most glamorous models without makeup or designer clothes, acting well, like a typical mother, is a rare occurrence, even in a ritzy place like The Hamptons. But Stephanie Seymour is indeed a local, especially during the summer polo season. Her husband, Peter Brant plays professionally, and the couple has three children, the youngest 10. Seymour, born and raised in California, began modeling at age 16 and quickly rose to the upper echelon of her profession, posing in several Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues, for Victoria’s Secret, and in Playboy. In 1991 Seymour hit the tabloids courtesy of a steamy relationship with Guns and Roses madman Axl Rose. The couple broke up two years later, and sued each other, both claiming assault and damages. Seymour tried her hand acting, and turned in an acceptable performance as Helen Frankenthaler in the 2000 film Pollock. Enter Brant, a publisher, real estate developer, art collector – and one of the world’s wealthiest men. He was married with five children but fell head over heels for Seymour. They were married in Paris in 1995. Seymour devoted her time to motherhood – she also had a son from her first marriage. Brant is the founder of the Bridgehampton Polo Club – he was at one time the highest ranked amateur player in the world. Seymour usually attends the matches. Brant grew up in New York and was a childhood friend of Donald Trump. His fascination with horses goes beyond polo -- Brant was the breeder of the 1995 Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch. Seymour likes to shop locally and has been spotted having breakfast with the kids at John Papa’s in East Hampton. By the way, even without makeup in casual shorts and a top, Seymour is one of the world’s most beautiful women.

Nammos Estiatorio By Jessica Mackin My friends and I stopped by Nammos Estiatorio on Friday e v e n i n g f o r d i n n e r. Aw a r d Winning, Executive Chef Emmanouil Aslanoglou has created a menu that offers innovative dishes utilizing Mediterranean ingredients, all of which are grown and caught locally. We started with an array of appetizers. The tuna tataki, briefly seared Long Island yellow fin tuna, was served with a crispy cracked potato, tzatziki wasabi and green olives. The dish was excellent. Another favorite was the eggplant cannelloni with heirloom tomatoes, feta cheese, and roasted sesame balsamic glaze. A great dish to share with the table was the Nammos special, crisp, paper thin zucchini and eggplant chips with tzatziki dip. For our entrees an absolute favorite was the fresh and delicious Chilean sea bass prepared with

caramelized in sweet miso, tender Chinese eggplant, Granny Smith apple and honey citrus vinaigrette. The scallops were also magnificent, made with Greek yoghurt gnocchi, tomato, chive, scallions, and white truffle creme. The tuna fillet, grilled local tuna with broccolini, horseradish, pickled ginger, crispy matzo balls was also a fantastic choice. Nammos Estiatorio delivers a luxurious atmosphere, while preserving the authentic Greek aesthetic. The staff was friendly and helpful creating a very enjoyable dining experience. We finished with dessert and coffee. The ice cream sundae was a definite highlight and a spectacular way to end our night. Nammos Estiatorio 136 Main Street Southampton

Tips From Seafood Expert Colin Mather

O P E N D A I LY F O R L U N C H & D I N N E R

Nothing else says summer dining in the Hamptons like fresh, local seafood. The Hamptons top seafood expert is Colin Mather, owner of The Seafood Shop in Wainscott. Mather, a Hampton’s native, has been earning his seafood expert status for over 15 years. Here Mather shares some inside tips for the 2014 seafood season. •July 1 kicked off commercial striped bass season and already it is hot item. •Soft shell crabs are flying out of the fish case this season and seem to be landing on everyone’s dinner party menus! •We are selling tons of lobsters out of the tanks this summer both cooked and raw. •For those who are looking for a prepared dinner, a hot menu item this season is the seafood paella. • Despite the heat of summer, the chowders and soups are still going out by the quart. • The clambakes and BBQ’s are more popular than ever. Twenty four fully catered parties were completed from Thursday to Saturday, despite the very poor weather over July 4 weekend. • Raw bars seem to be quite the popular add on to make people’s summer soirees complete. • Porgies are living up to their culinary billing as “fish of the year.” We haven’t seen so many go out the front door to people’s kitchens.

www.indyeastend.com Ingredients (serves 4) 1 1/2 lbs fluke fillet 2 Thai chili peppers 1 green apple 2 oz apple juice 6 oz coconut milk 1 small bunch of cilantro 1 tbsp Madras curry powder Salt and pepper to taste

Method Begin by washing your fluke fillet and carefully slicing into 12 thin pieces. Place in the refrigerator until you are ready to assemble the dishes. In a small sauce pot add the coconut milk, apple juice and curry powder. Bring to a simmer and reduce over medium heat for about 10 minutes or until you have achieved a sauce consistency. Allow the sauce to cool in the refrigerator. Slice the apple into

thin strips (juilliene). To prepare the chilies, scrape the seeds and membrane from the inside and slice the chilies into thin rings. To plate, mix the chilies and apple in some of the sauce. Lay down a bed of sauce on each plate. Place three slices of fluke per plate with picked cilantro. Finish with a bit more sauce.
