Mandolin Master David Grisman Talks To Indy David “Dawg” Grisman, a frequent collaborator with the Jerry Garcia, and John Sebastian of “Loving Spoonful” fame will play together at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center Saturday. Grisman sat down with Indy Editor Rick Murphy to talk about his musical career and Rick’s lack thereof.
other. Finally, after 40 years, our paths crossed at a benefit concert in Mill Valley, California. After this mutually enjoyable evening of spontaneous music, it became obvious that we should collaborate on a project and the result was “Satisfied” - a great collection of acoustic duets featuring traditional folk tunes and classy instrumentals.
RM: Both you and Jerry Garcia came from musical households. Was there some kind of bond between you because maybe you were both a little further along in music theory and history than some of the rock stars of the era? DG: We both had a love for Bluegrass music and Bill Monroe.
RM: Who are some of the more diverse musicians you’ve played with that maybe the general public doesn’t know about? DG: Besides my collaborations with Garcia and Stephane Grappelli, I love working with the great guitarists Martin Taylor from Scotland or Frank Vignola from New York. I am also doing some select duo dates with my dear friend Del McCoury.
RM: Let’s talk about John for a while. I didn’t realize you two crossed paths so long ago. Just tell the readers a little about those days if you would and your album with Sebastian. DG: I first met John at New York University in 1963 when the Greenwich Village folk revival was in its heyday. Our first recording together was as members of the Even Dozen Jug Band, which featured Maria Muldaur, Stefan Grossman, and others. We then sort of lost track of each
RM: The mandolin is of course widely used in bluegrass and country. You seem to have the ability to get more out of yours. I particularly like when you keep rhythm and throw in fill leads almost simultaneously. I guess it’s fair to ask how much time you put in practicing and did it come easy? DG: Nothing comes easy, but I love to play the mandolin and I love all kinds of music.
RM: They say Jerry could remember endless verses of obscure songs. “Jenny Jenkins,” which you two performed, is one that comes to mind. Are you like that? Do you have any idea how many songs you know? DG: Not really, but most of the time if I have heard it before I kind of remember what to do. RM: It’s often been repeated that Vassar Clements, when asked about his band mates in Old and In The Way, answered, “Them boys smoke a lot of dope.” I know some of you boys surely did, but did Vassar really say that? DG: Not as far as I remember. He did say that working with OITW was the most fun he had ever had on stage. RM: I’ve seen your movie, of course, and you seem to have a normal household. You’ve managed to stay out of the tabloids, avoided scandals and jail, and live a relatively normal family life. Is that true and if so how do you – and did you – stay grounded? DG: I think most of those people are entertainers, I don’t see that happening with dedicated musicians.
RM: Growing up in a repressive environment I always believed I would always be open to all forms of music. The truth is I don’t like some of the new stuff I hear, so maybe I’m just like my father. How about you? Anything out there appeal to you? DG: I believe there are only two types of music: good and bad. Tickets to see Grisman and rock legend John Sebastian performing together at WHBPAC Saturday can be had by calling 516-288-1500.

Horoscope by Kate Plumb
Week of Wednesday October 15-22 Read your rising sign if you know it; or any other sign, as each of us has Aries, Taurus etc. someplace in our charts governing some aspect of our lives. ARIES (March 21-April 20) – We are between the Lunar Full Moon from last week and the Solar New Moon eclipse on the 23rd. In eclipse season, as it is called, sudden change is very likely (depending on your natal chart). Excitement and enterprise reign for you, coupled with a very realistic financial assessment about how much you can afford to spend or lose. TAURUS (April 20-May 21) – Have you fallen in love with someone at work? As we are in Eclipse season after the Full Moon of last week and before the New Moon of next week, we are betwixt and between. Sudden shifts are very likely. It is best to wait and see what the gods have in mind before rushing into anything. Starting a friendship under an eclipse can have unanticipated consequences. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) – The Sun meets Mercury tomorrow marking the halfway point in the Mercury retrograde cycle. This is when the new information or decision comes to light. The affairs you are concerned with are of a romantic nature, children, what you do for fun or your personal creativity. Then Mercury meets Mars, Venus, Saturn, Neptune and Jupiter as the week unfolds. How very busy you are slowly going back over how best to enjoy yourself. Boredom is not
your thing. CANCER (June 21-July 20) – The Moon is in your sign as the week begins. Be prepared for some internal insecurity. This week you have to integrate what has occurred in your life thus far in this Eclipse season-between the Full Moon from last week when affairs come to ahead and the New Moon next week when there is a new start. These are likely to be rather joltingnot necessarily in a bad way. Look to making a financial commitment to the long-term health and happiness of your progeny. LEO (July 20-Aug. 21) – Moon is in your sign Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 6 PM. Excitement and enterprise can be coupled with a fear of losing your home. The task is to do what must be done to expand and grow without having the folks at home wonder where you are. They are your foundation. Repair any leaks in the roof or any hurt feelings. VIRGO (Aug. 20-Sept. 21) – Mercury is still retrograde during this week between eclipses. Thoughts are doing a redo in your earned income sector. It is normal for this time in the cycle. What is not normal is that we are in eclipse season and freaky things can happen. Try not to judge or be critical at least out loud. Look to tomorrow around 4:40 PM to begin to get clarity. There should be some good news this week despite the eclipses and the retrograde. LIBRA (Sept. 21-Oct. 20) – Stop worrying about money and look to the relationship to increase your self esteem which will bolster your bottom line. You are building on the good will

of the community to also slowly increase your bank account. We are in “eclipse season” between the Lunar Full Moon of last week and the Solar New Moon next week; endings and beginnings. It is time to assimilate. Eclipses are like light switches–change can happen that fast. (Look to last week’s Lunar Eclipse in your sign with the Supreme Court and gay marriage). SCORPIO (Oct. 21-Nov. 21) – You have been under pressure with Saturn in your sign and it seems to be increasing as Jupiter, the planet of excess and growth, is moving towards a hard angle with Saturn. You want to be taken seriously but are thinking about doing something that seems childish and selfish. You are just toying with it now during this Eclipse season and Mercury retrograde. It will come back in the beginning of next August. What do you value? What do you want? You will not be able to keep that relationship secret forever. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21-Dec. 21) – Do you have any energy to travel and visit a foreign family or artistic group this week? Maybe you should buy tickets for a visiting dance troupe or see a new play to get inspired. Remember, though, there is Saturn who wants you to get real about too much gallivanting about for no purpose. There’s that voice inside which is telling you if you are kidding yourself or not. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 20) – Having a one on one with your boss is favored this week, even though Mercury is still retrograde. You might not come to any final conclusions just yet, but you will be able to express how best you feel your artistic talents
IN THE NEWS
can be useful to him/her. After the Lunar Eclipse of last week, a whole new world might have opened up. Get ready for the Solar New Moon Eclipse next week. The gods are awake. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) – You are caught in the horns of a dilemma between your partner, who seems to be having all the fun, and you feeling like a wet blanket. You can add the note of realism very important so the excess does not get out of hand. Are you taking a trip this month –or taking a child to look at colleges? Is it stirring up any desires on your part? PISCES (Feb. 19-March 21) – Any new job or new opportunity in the service sector will require you to play the advisor role. Your morals and ethics will be tested. As we are between the Lunar Eclipse Full Moon last week, when issues come to a head and something gets exposed, and the Solar Eclipse New Moon next week, plus Mercury retrograde, everything is in a state of flux. Win-win solutions should appear this week in your financial sector, if a kink appeared last week. You will have to have a balanced approach and get over any selfishness. Penny Marshall became one of America’s favorite comedians playing LaVerne on the hit TV show “Laverne and Shirley.” Even before then, though, she was getting raves for her recurring guest spots on shows like “The Odd Couple,” “Mary Tyler Moore,” and “Happy Days.” But her ditsy TV persona was by no means her defining feature. She achieved equal success as a movie director. A look at her pedigree reveals deep show biz roots. Her mother, Marjorie Ward, was a professional dancer and ran a dance school. Her father, Tony Masciarelli, is an actor and director. Her brother, Garry Marshall, is a writer and director and worked on many of the shows his sister appeared on. Carole Penny Marshall – she was named after Carole Lombard – left “Laverne and Shirley” in 1983. She was nominated for three Golden Globes during its seven year run. Marshall wanted to direct and in 1988 her first major motion picture broke new ground. Big, starring Tom Hanks, became the first film directed by a woman
to gross over $100 million. She followed up that effort with Awakenings in 1990, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Other hits include A League of Their Own and Bewitched, which she produced. Marshall was married to Rob Reiner for 10 years, divorcing in 1981. Oddly, before their romance both tried out for roles in “All In The Family.” She lost out to Sally Struthers, who played Gloria, Archie Bunker’s daughter. Reiner got the job as Gloria’s husband, “Meathead.” Marshall is no stranger to the Hamptons and is especially fond of East Hampton.

Keaton and Norton soar in Birdman.
An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick. New To Theaters
12 Years Experience
The Judge (R) Warner Brothers goes for a home run by signing Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall to head up an all star cast in this drama about a big city lawyer who returns home to defend his father. David Dobkin was an odd choice to direct: with the exception of Wedding Crashers he has a decidedly mixed record at the box office. It’s pretty standard fare, but the big boys deliver A-list performances and the supporting cast, led by Billy Bob Thornton, Vera Farmiga and Vincent D’Onofrio hold their own.
Coming Soon Birdman * (R) Michael Keaton is getting heavy buzz for his performance as a washed up actor who once played a superhero. Its director Alejandro González Iñárritu is a master of pacing, and Edward Norton turns in a spectacular supporting performance. This film is a serious contender for the Best Picture statue. New On DVD Blended Memo to every studio director and film producer: Adam Sandler is NOT a suitable lead in a romantic comedy and hasn’t made a funny movie in years. Drew Barrymore goes down with this ship. Now Playing Gone Girl * (R) This year’s IT movie has arrived, and it is indeed the early favorite for the Best Picture Oscar. The Oscar pedigree is everywhere, from the producer, David Fincher (Social Network) to the male lead, Ben Affleck (Argo). The script, faithfully culled from Gillian Flynn’s international bestseller, is diabolical and edgy, and the acting is superb. Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day) landed the plum role of Amy Dunne and nails it. Neil Patrick Harris makes the transition from small to big screen with aplomb. There are those critics who flinch from Fincher’s perverted style (think Se7en) but this film is going to be a box office smash and a major player when the Oscar nominees are announced. One complaint: it does go on with its bad self, so hit the john before the show.

Stevens’ Sweet – And Sauer – Solution
By Kitty Merrill More and more the benefits of fermented food are making their way to the forefront of the minds of health conscious eaters. But buying kimchi at specialty markets or purchasing a
trendy crock to make your own at home can be cost prohibitive . . . unless you know Nick Stevens. An East Hampton High School graduate who grew up in Springs (and, yes, this writer’s nephew) Stevens

has been a health foodie all his life. With a career in finance, he’s also interested in figuring out how to get the biggest bang for the buck with any project. His quest for a solution to the conundrum of DIY fermentation on a budget took close to three years, but this week he debuted a Kickstarter campaign for the Fermentium – an affordable, multipurpose crock that will appeal to gadget lovers, penny pinchers, and gourmets alike. “I had a friend who made some sauerkraut and wanted to tr y it myself,” Stevens said from his South Williamsburg pied a terre. After researching tools available for home fermenting, he found some crocks on the market, but they all cost over $100 and were unattractive. “I figured there had to be a better way.” Working for renown lamp designer Chris Spitzmiller (His creations can be found in the oval office and locally at Mecox Gardens.) Stevens developed an affinity for household items that are both beautiful and functional. The search for a designer for the Fermentium led Stevens to Justin Crocker, a student at Pratt Institute for design. “I think he’s gonna go places,” Stevens said. The pair teamed up and Crocker turned Stevens’ “crude sketches” into an aesthetically pleasing design. With the design phase articulated, Stevens next turned keen research skills to seeking small business assistance, and was surprised and gratified to discover how much help is available for start-ups. He’s entered in a business competition at Brooklyn Library and has found mentors through the Department of Labor. “It’s so great to see how much exists for people who want to start their
own companies,” he said. “People are doing really nice things that many don’t know even exist.” As he relayed a path that led to this week’s milestone – the debut of a Kickstarter campaign – Stevens reported he was turning cabbage into sauerkraut as we spoke. “Everybody would make this stuff at home if they knew how easy it is,” he said. All you do, he explained, is add the vegetables, salt, spices and water to the Fermentium. Sleek and sturdy, the Fermentium is crafted of stoneware, with grooves designed to help you lift it when it’s full and a square shape to make it easy to store when it’s not in use. But it could be used a lot, and not just for making pickles or kimchi or any array of fermented foods. It’s pretty enough to use as a vase, cookie jar or even punch bowl. And did we mention economical? Make one or two batches of signature pickles and you’ve already recouped your cost. Future creations cost as much as you want to spend on quality fresh ingredients. And you’re not sending any dough to the electric company, either, since the Fermentium operates on the simple reaction between the vegetables and spices. Pickles and kraut and kimchi offer a taste that’s . . . sauer, but Stevens has drawn inspiration and gotten assistance from an array of sweet and generous professionals who, he notes on his fermentium.com website, all “contributed to this project completely for free.” Last but not least, he credits Coleen Curtin: “My Mom, she named me and also came up with the name the 'Fermentium.' Good one!” Visit The Independent website and our Facebook page to see Stevens’ video for The Fermentium.
