Sara Nightingale Gallery Sara Nightingale Gallery in Water Mill presents artists Brian O’Leary and Gus Yero with “Proximity Game.” The exhibition will continue through November 17. Louise Eastman: Loop Holes Bridgehampton’s Silas Marder Gallery presents “Louise Eastman: Loop Holes,” an exhibition of mixed media weavings, paintings and interactive installation. The show will be on view through November 8. Edgar Allan Poe The Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead presents an Edgar Allan Poe Exhibit. This unique and fascinating exhibit will be on loan from the official Poe Museum in Richmond, and will be featured during the Annual Poe Festival in Downtown Riverhead on Halloween weekend. The show will be on view through November 8. Close-Up “Close-Up,” an iconic collection of 1960’s film images, will make its American debut at the historic barn at Mulford Farm Museum in East Hampton. Photographer Susan Wood captured an era in film history, including unforgettable personalities like Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Monica Vitti, Marcello Mastroianni, Billie Whitelaw, John Wayne and Billy Wilder. Dear White People (R ) * Fresh off rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, young writer/director Justin Simien’s film hits the theaters with a bang. Funny and sassy, it’s about a group of AfricanAmerican students trying to figure out life at a predominantly white college campus. After pandering films like The Butler and 12 Years A Slave, it’s a pleasure to see a black movie that doesn’t take itself seriously. A tremendous cast led by Tyler James Williams glides through Simien’s screenplay as if it were unscripted, yet the wit endears and the message is palpable but never ponderous. Don’t miss it.

Now Playing Birdman * (R) If you paid top dollar to see this at the HIFF last week the joke is on you -- it’s playing everywhere in the country this week for half the price. Michael Keaton is getting heavy buzz for his performance as a washed up actor who once played a superhero. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu is a master of pacing, and Edward Norton turns in a spectacular supporting performance. This film is a serious contender for the Best Picture statue and both men should be on the short list come Oscar time. The Judge (R ) Warner Brothers goes for a home run by signing Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall to head up an all star cast in this drama about a big city lawyer who returns home to defend his father. David Dobkin was an odd choice to direct: with the exception of Wedding Crashers, he has a decidedly mixed record at the box office. It’s pretty standard fare, but the big boys deliver A-List performances and the supporting cast, led by Billy Bob Thornton, Vera Farmiga, and Vincent D’Onofrio hold their own.

Independent Dining Crispy Corn Fritters With Spicy Coleslaw Ingredients (serves 4) 10 oz. bag frozen corn 1/4 c heavy cream 1 shallot 1/2 c all purpose flour 1 tbsp Old Bay seasoning pinch of salt 1 tbsp cracked black pepper 1/2 a gallon of canola oil 1 head of cabbage sliced very thin 1 large carrot sliced into thin strips 1 red onion sliced very thin juice of one lime 2 tbsp white sugar
2 tbsp cider vinegar 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1/3 c mayonnaise 2 tsp of your favorite hot sauce 1 handful of cilantro chopped
Method Begin by sautéing the chopped shallot in a medium sized saucepot. Add the corn when the shallot has become translucent. Add the heavy cream and seasoning and simmer on medium heat for about 30 minutes. Blend the

the hot oil and cook for two minutes each or until golden brown. For the coleslaw mix all the thinly sliced vegetables, cilantro, olive oil, mayonnaise, limejuice, vinegar and hot sauce together in a bowl. Serve alongside the crispy corn fritters. Enjoy!
