To Kill A Mockingbird By Jessica Mackin Bay Street Theater & Sag Harbor Center for the Arts presents November’s Literature Live! production of To Kill A Mockingbird directed by Joe Minutillo. The play is based on the acclaimed novel by Harper Lee and was adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel. The cast, made up of many local actors from Sag Harbor, Hampton Bays and Calverton, brings this piece of classic American literature to life on stage in a 90-minute professionally staged production for audiences of all ages. The story, a standard of modern American literature, deals honestly with issues of race and rape in 1936 in the Deep South, while displaying the love and warmth of family and neighbors. This production is a wonderful rendition of the classic. Jemma Kosanke plays Scout and gives an endearing performance with a fantastic portrayal of the character. Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, played by Scott Eck, presents the character in a great light as the important image of racial heroism. Local schools have the opportunity to bring students to the theater to get a unique understanding of the subject matter by witnessing the characters living and breathing and telling their stories right before their eyes. It was evident throughout the production on Monday morning that the students were fully engaged in the performance. Public performances will be presented on Fridays and Saturdays November 14 to 15, 21 to 22, and Thanksgiving Weekend November 28 to 29 at 7 PM. Matinees will be held on Saturdays, November 15, 22, and 29 at 2 PM. Groups and weekday show times vary and are open to the public based on availability. Located in Sag Harbor, Bay Street Theater is also offering a Free Student Ticket Initiative for all students. Tickets are on sale now at the Box Office, by calling 631-725-9500, or by visiting www.baystreet.org.

Broadway Reporting From
(& Sometimes Off)
By Isa Goldberg
Fall is in full swing and what better time to hop on the Hampton Jitney and catch a Broadway Show. Critic Isa Goldberg gives her recommendations for New York Theatre. The philistines of Broadway, from investors to critics, are driving Broadway audiences to comic hysteria. Terrence McNally’s It’s Only A Play, is a hash slinging satire, a splatter pattern of one-liners, a gag a minute run amuck comedy about the theater, directed with deft timing and wild abandon by Jack O’Brien. Stockard Channing takes no prisoners here as an unsightly aging actress. Matthew Broderick as the play’s unfortunate scribe is desperately pompous. Nathan Lane is well … he’s Nathan Lane. Add to that, a self-serving critic (F. Murray Abraham), the show’s investor turned producer (Megan Mullally), and a director of inscrutable wizardry played by Rupert Grint, a recognizable runaway from the Harry Potter movies. Most surprising is the beautiful young actor Micah Stock who makes his Broadway debut as Gus P. Head, the innocent cloak boy amidst the daggers. While an unseen Ben Brantley allegedly eviscerates their show, McNally’s play is still the hottest ticket in town. In fact, it’s so good you can’t get a ticket! Meanwhile, Sting is occupying Broadway and we the masses are watching his new musical, The Last Ship, with every breath we take. Set

in the shipbuilding town Wallsend, England, John Logan’s and Brian Yorkey’s book explores the bonds of working class men and women, the brutality of industry and the rift between fathers and sons. Joe Mantello directs with earthy muscularity, and Steven Hoggett’s foot stomping choreography plumbs the lives of these soul searching folk, creating a rawness rarely seen in a Broadway musical. Giving a rousing performance, Michael Esper as the pugilist strikes up the fight for their posterity, and breaks the wall between audience and stage. While few in number, the women characters are as passionate as the men, especially Rachel Tucker, the love interest. Along with Aaron Lazar as her husband, Jimmy Nail, as the forgotten worker, and Fred Applegate as the endearing priest, this is one dynamic ensemble. Sting has come to Broadway, and the music is not to be missed. Scott Ellis’ revival of Kaufman and Hart’s You Can’t Take It With You is giving audiences a run for their money. Written in 1936, it’s an old chestnut with a sophisticated stab at America’s obsession with wealth and its acquisition. It starts with a loving American family: a wise grandfather, James Earl Jones, who’s being chased by the IRS, a husband, Mark Linn-Baker, an inventor whose accomplishments are literally explosive, his incorrigibly quirky wife, (Kristine Nielsen), their

Grace Kelly, 1929 There have been very few American actresses that achieved the popularity of Grace Kelly. And it wasn’t simply the case of a sultry beauty that lit up the big screen. Grace Kelly was endearing because she was wholesome, attractive but never garish, and carried the persona of the girl next door wherever she went. Kelly grew up in an affluent Philadelphia neighborhood. Her father, John Kelly, was a three-time Olympic Gold medalist in sculling and her mother, Margaret Majer, a physical education professor at Pennsylvania University. Majer was a beauty queen and a professional model during her younger years, and Kelly inherited her mother’s perfect features and startling good looks. Her show business experience was limited to high school musicals, but at age 20 Kelly decided she wanted to become an actress and abruptly moved to New York City against the wishes of her family. The noted director John Ford immediately noticed Kelly and, enamored with her breeding, quality, and class, flew her to Hollywood and signed her to a seven-year contract. In 1953 she landed a plum role in Mogambo opposite Clark Gable and Ava Gardner. She earned an Oscar nomination and won the Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe award for her efforts. Alfred Hitchcock was also enamored with her, and he cast Kelly in Dial M For Murder. The master director used her beauty as the centerpiece of the film, his lighting technique and camera angles providing fodder for filmmakers for decades afterwards. Kelly turned down On The Waterfront with Marlon Brando to work again with Hitchcock, who had become her mentor, in Rear Window. She won her first Academy Award for her performance in her next film, The Country Girl. Then it was off to France to film To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant, who later said Grace was the best actress he had ever worked with. While in Cannes Kelly met Prince Ranier III of Monaco. The following year, 1956, he led a delegation to the United States, ostensibly an official trip but in reality a chance to see Kelly again. He asked for her hand in marriage after spending three days with Kelly and her family. Ironically, though Ranier was a man of great wealth, the Kelly family had to pay a huge dowry – reportedly $2 million to the Prince as part of the marriage agreement. The marriage was one of the most opulent of the era. Kelly, her family, wedding party and friends, booked a luxurious cruise ship for the trip across the ocean. The palace in Monaco was redecorated from top to bottom, and 20,000 people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the royal couple. Grant and Gardner were among the guests. About the same time High Society, her last major film, was released. Her co-star Frank Sinatra, was invited to the wedding but did not attend. Hitchcock, forever smitten, tried to lure her back behind the camera by offering her the lead role in Marnie in 1962 but Kelly, initially interested, was dissuaded by the public outcry in Monaco. In 1982, while driving home to Monaco, Princess Grace suffered a stroke. Her daughter Stephanie, in the vehicle with her, tried to gain control of the car and it crashed. Stephanie recovered but her mother did not. Kelly was only 26 when she married, but in her scant five years in the business appeared in 14 films, including several that rank among the best ever made.

An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick. New To Theaters Jessabelle (PG-13) Sarah Snook (Sleeping Beauty) gets the title role in this horror flick from the folks that gave us Paranormal Activity, which is what it would be to sit through the entire 90 minutes. But the gal is a pretty good actress, and there are a couple of scary scenes, and winter is coming, so teens could do worse on a Friday night.
Coming Soon Dumb and Dumber To (PG-13) You really can’t make such an incredibly dumb movie twice, but the lure of the almighty dollar beckons. The boys are considerably older and, if humanly possible, have gotten considerably dumber – in fact, they are imbeciles. If you find that funny, by all means go. Ryan, following in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck. As was the case with the Captain Kirk character in Star Trek, Pine plays Tom Clancy’s secret agent in his earliest days. After an heroic stint in the U.S. Marines Ryan is recruited by a CIA operative – Kevin Costner. The pair ends up in Moscow trying to prevent a financial meltdown in the U.S. (don’t ask). Everyone shameless overacts especially Kenneth Branagh, who plays a Russian bad guy and also directs the film. The Razzi contender though, is Keira Knightley, who is unbelievably bad playing Ryan’s girlfriend. Let’s put it this way: after Ryan murders the first of many Russian bad guys, he confesses that he is a CIA agent to Cathy Muller, Knightley’s character. “Thank God,” she relies happily. “I thought you were cheating on me.” “Naw, just pummeling the life out of a man in my hotel bathroom and leaving him in the bathtub to die as the blood and guts ooze out of him. Hey! Let’s grab a bite to eat!” Now Playing Instellar (PG-13) So here’s how Hollywood works. Gravity, an outer space movie, wins the Best Picture Oscar, see? Sandra Bullock stars, and she wins a statue, see? So all the big studios, in this case Paramount, order up space movies for production, see? And they get big name actors, preferably Academy favorites like Mathew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain. Then you get yerself a hot director (Christopher Nolan) and BOOM – ya got box office gold. Yes, it’s plodding and hokey, as one noted critic pointed out, but the special effects are to die for. If you must, see it in a good theater.

The Theory Of Everything (PG-13) Yes, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has a brilliant mind and his work on gravitational singularity theorems is indeed riveting, but do we really care about his love life? Felicity Jones plays the hottie who gets stuck on this stud muffin. Add a star if you are a member of the “Big Bang” cast. Nightcrawler (R ) Jake Gyllenhaal is perfect in the role of a reporter on the graveyard shift in the seamy section of Los Angeles. Rene Russo is the veteran reporter showing him the ropes. Bill Paxton and Ann Cusack head an excellent supporting cast. Gyllenhaal as an anti-hero sleazebag turns in an amazing performance. Dear White People (R ) * Fresh off of rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, young writer/director Justin Simien’s film hits the theaters with a bang. Funny and sassy, its about a group of African-American students trying to figure out life at a predominantly white college campus. After pandering films like The Butler and 12 Years A Slave it’s a pleasure to see a black movie that doesn’t take itself seriously. A tremendous cast led by Tyler James Williams glides through Simien’s screenplay as if it were unscripted, yet the wit endears and the message is palpable but never ponderous. Don’t miss it. John Wick ( R) Think a film about a hit man out for revenge has been done a thousand times? True enough, but never with Keanu Reeves rules in the title role. He takes this “assassin genre” flick up another notch. Ian McShane co-stars. Birdman * (R) If you paid top dollar to see this at the HIFF the joke is on you—it’s playing everywhere in the country for half the price. Michael Keaton is getting heavy buzz for his performance as a washed up actor who once played a superhero. The director Alejandro González Iñárritu is a master of pacing, and Edward Norton turns in a spectacular supporting performance. This film is a serious contender for the Best Picture statue and both men should be on the short list come Oscar time.
