The
Reel Deal
By Miles X. Logan
An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick. New To Theaters Foxcatcher (R) White-hot Channing Tatum gets serious as an Olympic wrestler overshadowed by his more successful brother. Steve Carell, who costars, also attempts to get serious, never a good idea. Vanessa Redgrave, who has made a career playing a stern unhappy matriarch, fits right in. Mark Ruffalo plays the older brother. It’s serious and ponderous and things get ugly and everyone is mining for Oscar gold. Directed by Bennett Miller (Moneyball). Sienna Miller co-stars. Probably doesn’t make the cut. Coming Soon The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I (PG-13) What can we say? It’s risen to Harry Potter levels of selfimportance as a breathless world waits to see what Katniss Everdeen will do next, even though we know from reading the books. Donald Sutherland, Julianne Moore et al are back. Not quite as good as the first two installments, but it’s still essential movie going.
New On DVD Chef * Goes where no film involving Jon Favreau has gone before . . . that is to say, it is actually good. Favreau plays a down and out chef who reconnects with his son when the pair and a cooking chum set out on a food truck to find America and themselves. John Leguizamo is brilliant as the loyal friend, young Emjay Anthony perfect as the somewhat shy son, and Favreau great. . . well, OK, pretty damn good. Kudos also go to Sophia Vergara as the mother and estranged wife. Dustin Hoffman, Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. also make appearances. Oliver Platt plays the food critic whose scathing review causes the chef to take a long look at his life. Favreau, in the title role, also wrote and directs, which explains all the face time. Nevertheless it’s irresistible. Now Playing Dumb and Dumber To (PG-13) You really can’t make such an incredibly dumb movie twice, but the lure of the almighty dollar beckons. The boys are considerably older and, if humanly possible, have gotten considerably dumber – in fact, they are imbeciles.

If you find that funny, by all means go. Jessabelle (PG-13) Sarah Snook (Sleeping Beauty) gets the title role in this horror flick from the folks that gave us Paranormal Activity, which is what it would be to sit through the entire 90 minutes. But the gal is a pretty good actress, and there are a couple of scary scenes, and winter is coming, so teens could do worse on a Friday night. Interstellar (PG-13) So here’s how Hollywood works. Gravity, an outer space movie, wins the Best Picture Oscar, see? Sandra Bullock stars, and she wins a statue, see? So all the big studios, in this case Paramount, order up space movies for production, see? And they get big name actors, preferably Academy favorites like Mathew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain. Then you get yerself a hot director (Christopher Nolan) and BOOM – ya got box office gold. Yes, it’s plodding and hokey, as one noted critic pointed out, but the special effects are to die for. If you must, see it in a good theater. The Theory Of Everything (PG-13) Yes, astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has a brilliant mind and his work on gravitational singularity theorems is
indeed riveting, but do we really care about his love life? Felicity Jones plays the hottie who gets stuck on this stud muffin. Add a star if you are a member of the “Big Bang” cast. Nightcrawler (R ) Jake Gyllenhaal is perfect in the role of a reporter on the graveyard shift in the seamy section of Los Angeles. Rene Russo is the veteran reporter showing him the ropes. Bill Paxton and Ann Cusack head an excellent supporting cast. Gyllenhaa as an anti-hero sleazebag turns in an amazing performance. Dear White People (R ) * Fresh off of rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, young writer/director Justin Simien’s film hits the theaters with a bang. Funny and sassy, its about a group of African-American students trying to figure out life at a predominantly white college campus. After pandering films like The Butler and 12 Years A Slave it’s a pleasure to see a black movie that doesn’t take itself seriously. A tremendous cast led by Tyler James Williams glides through Simien’s screenplay as if it were unscripted, yet the wit endears and the message is palpable but never ponderous. Don’t miss it.

today’s birthday by Miles X. Logan
Jodie Foster, 1962
She is perhaps Hollywood’s most enigmatic actress, one who shuns the limelight. She’s also among the smartest – a Yale graduate. Amazingly, she began her professional career at the age of three. Shockingly, she actually likes Mel Gibson. Did we mention she’s a lesbian? Yes, Jodie Foster is all these things. You’ve been seeing her pretty face since she starred in a Coppertone TV commercial at age three. She was on “Mayberry RFD” at age six, “Gunsmoke” at age seven and “Daniel Boone” the following year. You can spot her opposite David Carradine on “Kung Fu.” Foster graduated to the movies, appearing in several Walt Disney films. In all she was featured in 50 TV episodes and/or movies by the time she enrolled in college. Foster hit the big time in 1976 playing a child prostitute in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. She earned an Academy Award nomination for her efforts and numerous other accolades and later took home a statue for her role in The Accused. She hosted “Saturday Night Live” at age 14, the youngest to ever do so. She elevated to superstar status in 1991 playing Clarice Starling in The Silence Of The Lambs. Tom Harris, of
Shelter Tails
Sag Harbor, wrote the book of the same name, by the way. The film became an unexpected megahit, spawned a dozen copycat films, and earned Foster the Best Actress Oscar. Using her industry clout, she turned to directing and became more elusive, picking and choosing roles. She also became more reclusive. In 1994 she made the big budget film Maverick opposite Mel Gibson in the title role and James Garner,
who played the character on the TV series. Later that year she earned yet another Oscar nomination, her fourth, for Nell. Foster received good reviews for her directorial debut, Little Man Tate. She cast Gibson, who had been arrested for drunken driving and assailed for vicious anti-Semitic comments he made, in Beaver. It was a bomb. In 2013 Foster received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes. In her somewhat rambling acceptance speech she insinuated that she was gay. Earlier this year she publicly wed Alexandra Edison. Foster has two teenaged sons. Did we mention Foster was stalked by a presidential assassin? When she was at Yale she was stalked by John Hinckley Jr. He shot President Ronald Reagan partly to “impress” her.

Independent Dining Gemelli With Duck Confit Ingredients 4 duck legs 1/2 c sugar 1 c salt 1 tbsp black peppercorns (ground) 1 tsp star anise (ground) 10 tomatoes 2 cloves of garlic sliced thin 1/4 c oliv oil 1 lb dried gemelli pasta 1 c mâché leaves (washed) Grated Parmesan 1 cup diced butter nut squash 1/2 sliced leeks 2 tbsp butter 1 gallon duck fat or canola oil will
work in a pinch Salt and pepper to your liking
Method You will start the night before you are going to serve this dish. The duck legs need to sit in the cure over night before you confit them. Start by mixing the salt, sugar, and spices together then generously coating the duck legs. Cover and let sit in the fridge over night. When you are ready to begin cooking, set your oven to 350. Wash the excess cure from the duck legs and pat them dry. Find a large

oven proof vessel to cook the duck legs in. Submerge them in the fat. Either duck fat if you can find it or canola oil will work fine. Place in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes, just to get the oil up to temperature. Reduce the heat to 275 and let the duck legs cook for three and a half more hours. While the duck legs are cooking you can dice the leeks and squash. Go ahead and make your tomato sauce by first cutting the top off the tomatoes. Put them in the oven with the duck legs for 15 minutes. When you remove the tomatoes from the oven, allow them to cool for 10 minutes the simply peel the skin off. Crush them with your hand, then on the stove top in a large sauce pot. Heat the olive oil and garlic but do not brown the
garlic. Put the tomato into the pot and cook over medium heat for 20 minutes. When the duck legs are ready, remove them from the oven and use a slotted spoon to remove them from the hot oil. Place them on a towel and let them cool until they can be handled. When they are cool pick the duck meat. You are now ready to cook the pasta. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook the pasta stirring often for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat a large sauté pan. Add a bit of olive oil and sauté the leeks and squash. When the squash gets a bit of color add the sauce, then the duck. When the pasta is cooked add the pasta and the butter. Garnish with the mash and grated cheese. Enjoy!
