Broadway Reporting From

(& Sometimes Off)

By Isa Goldberg

The race for The Tony Awards is on its marathon run. This year, the hopeful prediction is a vote for youth on Broadway. Who are they, what are they looking for, and what will best attract them to the theater? Should the Tony voting fall that way, it will be an earnest message indeed, as Finding Neverland, the musical back story about J.M. Barrie’s penning of Peter Pan, didn’t even get a nod. Far less sentimental coming of age stories, however, have come to the fore. In the categor y of Best Play, pundits and fans alike are favoring The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel, adapted to the stage by Simon Stephens, reveals the frightening travails of an autistic teenager, a brilliant boy, driven to solving the murder of a neighbor’s dog. Sensitively told, it holds wider appeal than its leading competitor, the British import Wolf Hall Parts One & Two, Hillary Mantel’s historical fiction about the Tudors, adapted to the stage by Mike Poulton. The other contenders, 2013 Pulitzer Prizewinning Disgraced, a political drama about race and religion, and Hand to God, while equally serious dramas, just don’t have the dazzle of the two favored productions.

Best Actor

Best Musical

It’s the Best Musical categor y that most surprises me with 12 nominations for the Public Theater’s Broadway transfer Fun Home, putting it neck in neck with An American in Paris, also with 12 nods and many of them in the same categories. B a s e d o n A l i s o n B e c h d e l ’s memoir about her relationship with her father, Fun Home is the first lesbian coming of age stor y on the Great White Way, and it is considered a forerunner for Best Musical, Best Book (Lisa Kron), Best Score (Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori), Best Direction (Sam Gold). Its three featured actresses, Sydney Lucas (Young Alison), Emily Skeggs as Medium Alison, who comes out during her first year in college, and Judy Kuhn as the mother, are all nominees for Best Featured Actress in a musical. It would not surprise me in the least to see a very young actress win in this category, as Sydney Lucas is truly adorable. In addition, Michael Cerveris as Alison’s closeted gay father is one of three strong contenders for Best Actor in a Musical. Following on his heels, Brian d’Arcy James (Something Rotten!), and Robert Fairchild, who dances with thrilling surrender to the Gershwin’s buoyant music, in An American in Paris.

Best Actress A Tough Call

In the quintessential categor y of Leading Actress in a Musical, traditionally a tough call, this season hosts three outstanding contenders: Robert Fairchild Kelli O’Hara (The King and I), & Leanne Cope Kristin Chenoweth (On The Twentieth Century) and Chita Rivera (The Visit). Among the best performances by an actress in a play, was Elisabeth Moss’s delightful turn in the revival of The Heidi Chronicles, but she arrives at The Tonys after the show’s early close. Other contenders are Carey Mulligan rendering a focused, subtle portrayal in Skylight, Ruth Wilson in the philosophically complex Constellations, and Geneva Carr, another long shot from Hand to God. At the top of everyone’s list is Dame Helen Mirren (The Audience). Who will hold court at the Tonys? It’s a Queen’s show! Tune in to CBS on June 7.

A s C h r i s t o p h e r, t h e c e n t r a l character in The Curious Incident Alex Sharp, just out of Julliard makes his Broadway debut, leading the race in a heady category that includes Bradley Cooper. My hopes are high for Steven Boyer, the young actor in Hand to God, who discovers his inner demon in his sock puppet. He makes dirty puppet talk, bites off an ear, and generally makes Avenue Q look like Sunday in the park. Boyer is one of the most dynamic actors working on the stage. He’s certainly the dark horse, however, in a category that includes Ben Miles’ brilliantly understated and Machiavellian portrayal of Sir Thomas Cromwell in Wolf Hall. Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper, on the other hand, can anticipate a Tony snub for his astonishing physical transformation in The Elephant Man, as can Bill Nighy, the West End’s

elder statesman starring in Skylight.

The annual National Meningitis Association "Give Kids a Shot Gala" was once again an emotionfilled evening and a stellar success in aiding in the fight against meningitis, a potentially vaccinepreventable disease. On April 27, The Pierre in NYC was the stunning setting for this year’s event as hundreds of New York’s notables turned out to support the cause and were thrilled by the knockout performance of Obie Award winning actor/singer Darius de Haas. Dennis Rodman, 1961 He is without question one of the wildest, craziest people on earth. Perhaps you’ve seen him buddying around with Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, much to the chagrin of the American government. Maybe you’ve noticed him vamping around dressed as a woman -- a six-foot seven tower of fishnet stockings and shocking orange hair. And, of course, he was one of the first celebrities to embrace body piercing -- his lips, nostrils, eyebrows and ears are often adorned. He was always a trendsetter adorning his body with scores of tattoos a decade or more before it came into vogue. Then of course, there were his romances with Madonna and Carmen Electra and his insistence that he was bisexual despite all the evidence to the contrary. Rodman thrives on controversy. Dennis Rodman is so good at keeping his name in the news that some people don’t even realize he was once the perfect basketball player noted for his unselfishness. In fact, despite his penchant for off the court partying and his fondness for late night clubs, Rodman was coveted by NBA teams because he brought the essential tools needed for winning. He was selected to the All-Defensive team seven times, and was voted NBA defensive Player of the Year twice. He was arguably the best rebounder of all time, routinely outfighting men a half foot taller for the ball. No player has averaged as many rebounds per minute as Rodman since 1972. He once grabbed 34 rebounds in a single game, the third highest total, and holds the NBA record for most offensive rebounds in a game with 11. Rodman played with five NBA championships teams, including the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls that still hold the record for most wins in a season, 72. After his NBA career Rodman became a professional wrestler and then dabbled in acting, landing several movie roles. Rodman still makes news with his jaunts to North Korea. He is on the elite list of the Top 50 Best Basketball Players of All Time.

Silas Marder Shifts Focus To Design

By Miles X. Logan Silas Marder has been working at the family nursery business fulltime for 15 years and part-time since childhood. The eldest son of Kathleen and Charlie Marder, Silas is perhaps best known for The Silas Marder Gallery which hosts artist exhibitions, community events, and “Films on the Haywall,” an outdoor film series that has been free to East End residents for eight years. In 2012 he star ted The Silas Marder Garden Furniture line, which has been the impetus behind his desire to forge new territory. The eldest son in the Marder family intends to continue working with the family business, but in new ways. “ I ’ m n o t g o i n g f a r. I ’ m j u s t expanding my focus.” Marder hopes to draw from ideas he’s had to set aside due to the extreme demands of a busy family business. “I have hundreds of designs and plans that need to make it off the paper.” These include imaginative revisions of traditional objects, from lawn games and playgrounds to light fixtures and chairs, to outdoors event design and even parking lots. Last year, Marder designed a ping-pong table with an undulating surface.

“More recently I’ve been thinking a lot about bocce and shuffleboard.” The Gallery film series and art program will continue to be run by Marders with Silas’ same emphasis on community and bringing the arts outdoors. “I’m hoping my brothers might get involved at some point. Tucker, the youngest of the family, directed a theatrical adaptation of a Kurt Vonnegut novel last year that sold out at The Parrish Art Museum. When the actors needed to use the gallery for rehearsals, I started thinking, why not stage a play at the nursery? And of course, my brother Mica is an amazing artist who was the main inspiration behind opening the gallery.” The Big Show will open with a reception at the gallery on Saturday. If the natural landscape of the East End shaped his perspective on the environment, the designed landscape affected his idealism. “Because my father could transform an entire garden in a relatively small window of time, I grew up thinking anything is possible” Marder said. “Charlie would take me to job sites and while he would meet with clients and crews, I would wander off and explore these beautiful estates, from those dramatic East Hampton ocean-

front properties to more intimately designed ones like Alfonso Ossorio’s The Creeks.” It’s that childlike experience of wandering through nature on the East End that he hopes to find again, and then incorporate it into

his designs. “It’s all about value. The value of an experience. It’s about the appreciation you find when you can see things in new ways. This is the point I’ve reached in my life, where I’m looking for clarity. That’s the reason for the new direction.”

The

Reel Deal

By Miles X. Logan

An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick. New To Theaters The D Train (R) Jack Black and James Marsden star in this off-kilter comedy that seems to lose its bearing somewhere around the middle and veers away to plots unknown. There are some laughs, and there is a message in here, somewhere – the question is if anyone will really care by the end of the movie. Coming Soon I’ll See You In My Dreams * (PG-13) Our own Blythe Danner is luminous as a widowed, retired schoolteacher who tries to rebound from the death of her dog. The director Brett Haley (The New Year) hands the ball to Danner and deftly allows her to absorb the viewer in what is surely an Academy Award-worthy performance. Sam Elliot, as we’ve never seen him, may receive some Oscar love was well. Mary Kay Place and Malin Akerman co-star. New On DVD Into The Woods Emily Blunt rules the screen as The Baker’s Wife in this faithful adaptation of the play, and Meryl Streep is predictably terrific as The Witch. But Anna Kendrick is a cloying Cinderella, and the Sondheim score is overbearing at times. But OMG James Corden as a leading man? What’s next, his own TV show. And how weird is Johnny Depp?

Now Playing Hot Pursuit (PG-13) Sophia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon nail this buddy movie wherein Witherspoon, a by the book detective, is charged with protecting the exuberant widow (Vergara) of a drug lord marked for death. It runs the gamut from silly to profane, but don’t they all?

Avengers: Age of Ultron (PG-13) They are back, and the summer’s first big ticket action adventure is indeed overstuffed with high tech action and adventure as our superheroes, who only want to do good, have to combine their considerable forces to subdue some incredible evildoer with a massive display of violence and destruction. Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and the rest of the regulars are back for another romp. Pass the popcorn and enjoy. Far From The Madding Crowd (PG13) A visually lush rendering of the Thomas Hardy classic is a showcase for the considerable skills of Carey Mulligan, a woman who must choose between threes suitors. Michael Sheen (The Queen) co-stars. It’s probably the season’s first Oscar pretender, but Mulligan is worth watching. Ex Machina * (R) The noted screenwriter Alex Garland impresses in this, his directorial debut, with this startling yet disturbing fantasy thriller. Garland has attracted an all star cast

1/4 tsp cream of tartar 1/4 tsp salt 3 pints raspberries (washed) 1/2 c granulated sugar 2 egg yolks 1/4 c heavy cream 1 1/2 tbs cornstarch Method Begin by making your raspberry cream filling. Cook the raspberries with the sugar in a small sauce pot over medium heat covered for about 15 minutes. Blend and strain mixture. Return raspberry sauce to the pot. Over a double boiler, whisk the egg yolks until they are pale in color. Whisk together the cream and cornstarch then add the egg yolks and cream mixture to the raspberry sauce. Whisk vigorously over medium heat until thick. This will take about five minutes. Cool in the refrigerator for about three hours. Set your oven to 350. In a food processor pulse the walnuts, powdered sugar, and cocoa powder until fine. Strain the mixture to remove any large pieces. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar to soft peaks. Fold the egg whites into the dry ingredients, gently, being careful not to deflate the egg whites. Spoon the mixture into half dollar sized balls on a baking sheet. Cook for eight minutes at 350. Remove and allow to cool completely before spooning raspberry cream in the middle of two cookies. Enjoy!

Navy Beach Opens For The Season

By Jessica Mackin Navy Beach in Montauk is open for the 2015 season. The brainchild of partners Frank & Kristina Davis, Franklin Ferguson, Leyla Marchetto and Martin Cabrera, Navy Beach splashed on the Montauk restaurant scene in 2010. It's a laid-back, familyfriendly waterfront restaurant offering a memorable dining experience for the whole family in a beach setting with casual coastal cuisine and the best sunsets in the Hamptons. New this season, Navy Beach will be bringing the "Torpedo" back to Montauk’s Fort Pond Bay, home of the US Naval Torpedo Testing range during the WW2. The "Torpedo” is Navy Beach’s new launch service for boater guests. Torpedo is a 13-foot 1967 Vintage Boston Whaler with a custom Spiderman red paint job. The launch service is a natural addition to service the ever

growing yachting community who day trip to Navy Beach. Torpedo will further emphasize the stress free lifestyle that is exuded at Navy Beach, and will launch Memorial Day weekend. The restaurant will kick off its sixth season with their signature favorites as well as some new items throughout the menu. New items include: steamed PEI mussels in a red curry lobster sauce with sherry, cilantro, cashews and crème fraiche; pappardelle with blistered tomatoes, fava beans, shaved parmesan and lemon butter (add shrimp); whole fried local catch with a cabbage slaw, scallion, popcorn shoots, chili threads and kimchi brown butter; and MTK seafood stew with clams, mussels, shrimp, squid, coconut milk, bamboo rice and dende oil. Additional seasonal items will be added as market-based specials. As a result of the restaurant’s increasing success as a daytime

beach and boater destination and the huge popularity of rosé amongst Navy Beach clientele, the restaurant will be doubling the rosé offerings this season. The wine list will now feature nearly a dozen new selections from a variety of regions in France, including St. Tropez, Bandol, Burgundy, Corsica and Cotes du Rhone. New 750 ml bottles will include: Chateau Minuty, Chateau Miraval and Chateau Ramassan, while the large format rosé selection will include the ever-popular magnums of Cep d’Or as well as magnums from Les Voiles de St. Tropez – a partner of the renowned regatta in St. Tropez every fall. Additional large format selections include: Clos Beylesse, a blue bottled wine from St. Tropez that is hugely popular in the south of France and St. Barth and a jeroboam (3L of VieVité’s Extraordinaire black label. The restaurant’s popular themed American Summer Riviera Weekend will return on July 25 and 26, featuring two days of Riviera-inspired revelry filled with rosé, boats in the bay and sun-soakers on the sand clad in Riviera-inspired attire with special guest photographer James Katsipis on-site for the festivities. Winston's Bar And Grill Opens By Jessica Mackin Veteran local chef Winston Lyons has opened Winston’s Bar and Grill in the former Nichol’s location in East Hampton. Located at 100 Montauk Highway, Winston’s offers a seafood and steak style menu with a Caribbean flavor. Lyons is no stranger to Hampton’s restaurants, spending time sharpening his skills in the kitchens of Bostwick’s, East Hampton Grill, East Hampton Point and Turtle Crossing. Winston’s offers breakfast, lunch and dinner year round, with several weekly specials on tap. The breakfast menu features popular favorites including homemade buttermilk pancakes, French toast crusted with almonds and pecans topped with an apple and banana rum sauce, or huevos Rancheros. Lyons’ Jamaican heritage is reflected in a few signature breakfast items like the spicy Caribbean shrimp omelet and the breakfast wrap with eggs, chorizo sausage, fried plantains and spinach. The lunch menu offers a selection of classic items such as fried calamari, steamed mussels or grilled cheeseburger served with plantain fries. Creative signature items include Winston’s Greek salad with chicken, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggs, olives, onions, green beans and roasted potatoes with a mustard thyme dressing or the snow crab legs. For dinner the focus becomes seafood and steak. Starters include a raw bar selection of clams, shrimp and oysters or a spicy seafood cocktail

featuring shrimp, house fish, lobster and conch. The entrée portion of the menu includes sautéed crab meat served in the shell with a roasted garlic butter sauce and potato croquets or a crusted roast prime ser ved with roasted potatoes and house vegetables. The original charm of the building remains dating back to the days of The Quiet Clam in the 70s. The space offers a casual atmosphere with two dining areas both quaint and cozy. Wood is the predominant material throughout giving a rustic feel with several walls and the ceiling lined with repurposed wine crates. Local photography is sprinkled throughout the dining areas along with conch shells on display for a little Caribbean flavor. An outdoor lounge area will offer an al fresco option to enjoy cocktails and snacks in the warmer months. Weekly specials Lyons is planning include Tuesday night is Montauk night featuring dishes centered around Montauk-sourced ingredients and 2 for 1 Montauk drafts. Sundays offer Caribbean-style suppers, and Thursday nights look for specials on Red Stripe beer and wings, featuring several styles including Asian and Caribbean. A creative cocktail menu will offer some island themed concoctions such as Winston’s signature coco punch with Shelback spiced rum, Finlandia coconut, Chambord

liqueur, pineapple juice and orange juice and the Mai Tai with Seven Tiki Spiced Fijian rum, Kraken, Cointreau and splash of orange juice and lime juice. Winston’s Bar and Grill will be open seven days for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For more information visit www. winstonsds.com or call Winston’s at 631-2675400.
