Glorious Indian Summer set the scene for success last weekend as crowds thronged to Southampton Village for SeptemberFest. There was something for everyone in Agawam Park, including live music performances, vendors, pumpkin carvers and face painters, entertainers, ferry rides, a chowder contest, and tons of tasty food and drink. Village lanes featured sidewalk sales and travelling troubadours, plus a farmer’s market and more music at the Southampton Center. (Above) Mayor Mark Epley is pictured with youthful musicians on Jobs Lane. The Independent was a proud co-sponsor of this event.

today’s birthday by Miles X. Logan

Julie Andrews, 1935

Julie Andrews is synonymous with Sag Harbor, a frequent visitor to the village and one of the founders of Bay Street Theatre. Some locals may not even realize that not only is Julie Andrews English, but she was named a dame in 2010. Moreover, it wasn’t long ago that Andrews was a worldwide stage and screen star that possessed a stunning singing voice and the acting chops to go with it. Andrews came from a family that was in the business — she starred with her parents in a stage production of Jack And The Beanstalk when she was 10. She made her Broadway debut in 1954 and immediately ascended to the upper echelon of stage, starring in two of the most popular productions of all time, My Fair Lady and Camelot, and earning two Tony nominations. She played Cinderella in a TV special that ranked among the highest rated of all time. Her Hollywood debut, Mary Poppins, was yet another smash and Andrews was awarded the Best Actress Oscar. The following year Andrews managed to outdo her self, starring in The Sound Of Music, which ranks among the most popular movies ever made. She won a Golden Globe for her performance. Her performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie in 1967 cemented her position as the most popular movie actress in the world. Andrews divorced Tony Walton in 1967 and married the film director Blake Edwards, who cast his wife in Victor Victoria. Her performance garnered her yet another Oscar nomination. Andrews had an operation in 1997 to remove nodules from her vocal cords and never recovered her amazing singing voice, but she revived her career in the 2000s. She was honored by The Kennedy Center in 2001 and starred in the The Princess Diaries that same year. She directed a revival of The Boyfriend, one of her first hits, at Bay Street Theatre in 2003. She was the voice of Queen Lillian in three Shrek movies. In 2009 she was awarded the Gershwin Award and in 2011 a Lifetime Achievement Grammy. Most recently, she was the voice of Marlena in Despicable Me. She frequently returns to Sag Harbor, where her daughter, Emma Walton, continues her association with Bay Street Theatre.

the New Moon from last week). Love and graciousness are in the air. The weekend gets a little bumpy with the Sun meeting the two big powerhouse planets whose role is to shakeup whatever part of us is stale. Mercury is also heading backwards for the next few weeks moving back into your sign to meet that beautiful Venus and the North Node on the 18th. The way forward will appear. SCORPIO (Oct. 22-Nov. 22) – Mars is stirring up your finances house this week and moving into formation with two other planets in fire signs. Your work life should be filled with great excitement and the potential for great success. The weekend is rough as Mercury begins its three-week retrograde motion. Just when you thought you were ready to go public, there appears a fly in the ointment. Be cautious and read the fine print. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) – It is a great week to take a trip, which your adventurous spirit loves; especially true since Mercury goes retrograde this weekend for the next three weeks. Give your mind and commerce a break. Your partner might be throwing you a curve ball (if you have one that is, being the freedom-loving person that you are). All can be rethought or re-intuited on that yoga retreat. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 20) – Your ruler Saturn is going over the same ground this week that was covered at the beginning of the year. Can you remember what was up for you then? Time is circular as the planets orbit around the Sun. At this First Quarter Moon week, heading into the Lunar Eclipse Full Moon next week, you ought to be ready to move ahead, especially as the Moon is in your sign today and tomorrow morning. Caution and patience return over the weekend as affairs get disturbed both with Mercury beginning its backwards movement and the Sun meeting the two heavy planets where sudden power shifts are possible. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 20) – Friday and Saturday this week the Moon is in your sign; always a time of the month when we feel self-assured. Mercury will start its three-week retrograde motion Saturday at 1 PM. The intention to speak publically will be thwarted. You will be back here again November 10th when the green light is on. Watch the fireworks this weekend. Unlock your hidden powerhouse. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 21) – The Moon is in your sign Sunday and Monday and your innate wisdom with its calming peace and faith in the future will come in handy after this weekend. There could be some souls in your world set adrift by the major planetary activity over the weekend. We are heading into a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse next week, the Sun meets the two heavy planets which symbolize “the gods” being active in our lives and Mercury beginning its three-week retrograde period. For you personally it could be the “start of something big” (and suddenly financially rewarding). The

Horoscope Week of October 1-7 Read your rising sign if you know it; or any other sign, as each of us has Aries, Taurus, etc. someplace in our charts governing some aspect of our lives. ARIES (March 21-April 20) – Today is the First Quarter Moon, the day when we see the Moon overhead at sundown. There is a push forward energy in the air, which you are good at, leading into next week’s Full Moon Lunar Eclipse. The weekend is tricky with Mercury stationing retrograde. You might have second thoughts about a financial commitment just made. If it does not feel right, you have time (three weeks) to rethink and rewrite better terms. TAURUS (April 20-May 21) – Any feelings of martyrdom that come up on Friday might push you to the limit over the weekend so that you can become your nemesis - a raging bull. Mercury, the planet that governs what we think and say, is making a station here too, to begin its three-week retrograde period. You might not be quite ready for that relationship. There is still some self discipline to do. You will get back here again November 10th. No worries. GEMINI (May 21- June 21) – Thank god you have these times off! Mercury your ruler goes retrograde this weekend and the general feeling should be of exhaustion, retreat, and hiatus. Stop whatever is going on between your ears for the next few weeks, go back and do everything that begins with “re” . . . reorganize, redo, rewrite, redecorate, rework, etc. There might be a creative piece that you have dropped and need to return to; or a child needs additional attention. The weekend will be intense. CANCER (June 21-July 20) – First Quarter Moon this week, between the New Moon of last week and the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse of next week. You ought to be feeling the need to act on that new direction in your home life. With challenging Pluto involved, this moving forward might be in a direction not of your liking, as it might upset your emotional centeredness. Expect something to be revealed that you did not know was there, that needed to be aired and that causes you to rethink things at home. LEO (July 20-Aug. 22) – This is one of the four weeks of the year that your ruler the Sun runs into both Pluto (on Saturday) and Uranus (on Tuesday). Sudden power shifts are possible, as are eruptions of long and deeply-held secrets or resentments whose time has come to expose. With Mercury stationing retrograde also this weekend, these events will have to be processed slowly over the next three weeks. A new direction for growth within a relationship is possible, but it will require you to think things through and trust your intuition. VIRGO (Aug. 22-Sept. 21) – We are in a first quarter moon phase today, which is very energizing as far as the monthly cycle goes. You might feel like a racehorse chomping at the bit. However, your ruler Mercury is stalling, reminding you that there is something you forgot to include in last week’s new beginning. You have three weeks to remember, rethink, renegotiate the terms of that new partnership or endeavor that will increase your self esteem and hopefully your pocketbook. LIBRA (Sept. 21-Oct. 22) – Things cannot be more pleasant than those times, like now, when your ruler Venus and the North Node are in Libra (on top of

An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick. New To Theaters The Two Faces Of January (PG-13) Viggo Mortensen (Lord Of The Rings) and Kirsten Dunst play tourists that meet a suspicious tour guide at the Parthenon and become involved in a murder. Screenwriter Hossein Amini (The Drive), in his directing debut, tackles this adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel with aplomb, and the sets of 1962 Greece, are exceptional. It’s a good one. Coming Soon The Good Lie (PG-13) Reese Witherspoon is indeed wonderful in this much-hyped film about an American humanitarian dedicated to bringing “The Lost Boys” – victims of the brutal Sudanese civil war – to safety in America. It could have been a riveting movie, but the sight of this lily-white gal, with ALL she encounters, is a bit too much. American goody two shoes in the midst of the horror and pallor. New On DVD The Other Woman For the first time

since Bo Derek and 10, a film not rated X has been conceived and produced solely for the purpose of putting a scantily clad sexpot on the big screen. And thus we have Kate Upton front and center in this silly, contrived effort about three women that team up to give a two-timing – er, three-timing Casanova his comeuppance. Cameron Diaz gamely tries to keep it together, but no one notices. Also starring whathisface and whoziewhatzis. This is all about the left one and the right one, and prepare for plenty of close-ups.

Independent Dining Coconut Cream Pie Serves 6

Dough Ingredients 1/2 c and 1 tbsp butter 1/2 c and 3 tbsp confectioner's sugar 1 small pinch of salt 1 3/4 c all purpose flour seeds from one vanilla bean 1 tbsp lemon zest 2 egg yolks 1 1/2 tbsp cold milk 1/2 c granulated sugar CUSTARD INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 c unsweetened coconut milk 1 1/2 c milk 5 egg yolks

1/2 c shredded coconut 1/2 c toasted shredded coconut 2 tbs corn starch 3/4 c granulated sugar Seeds of 1 vanilla bean 1 tsp coconut extract

METHOD dough Begin by creaming together the butter, confectioner's sugar, and salt in a food processor. Pulse in the flour, half the seeds from the vanilla bean, lemon zest, and egg yolks. When the mixture begins to come together, and looks like coarse breadcrumbs, add the cold milk. Pat together to form a ball of dough, The less you work a tart dough the better, this will help produce a flaky crust. Roll the dough into a sausage shape and let it rest and cool in the fridge for at least an hour. When you are ready to bake the tart shell, turn the oven on to 350 degrees, then remove the dough from the fridge and slice into flat pieces. Press and form them into

your pie tin and cut off any excess dough that may be spilling over the top of the tin. Cut a piece of parchment paper slightly larger than the tin and line the tin with the paper. Fill with beans and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the beans and lower the temperature to 325. Bake another seven minutes. Remove and let the tart shell cool.

METHOD CUSTARD Bring the coconut milk, sugar, and one cup of the milk to a boil then reduce to a low simmer. Whisk together the remaining 1/2 cup of milk with the corn starch, coconut extract, and vanilla bean seeds. In a medium sized bowl temper the egg yolks by whisking in a 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture. Now whisk the milk and corn starch mixture into the hot milk with the eggs. Whisk vigorously for about five minutes over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens. Stir in the coconut. Pour the custard in to the tart shell. Cover in plastic and cool for at least two hours before serving.

No Shame Is Asking

Juan Pablo is a 16-month-old Amagansett resident who has recently undergone surgery because he was born with a medical condition called Hydronephrosis. He had been suffering from repeated kidney infections since birth and, left untreated, could have led to kidney failure. Well-known pediatric urologist and surgeon, Dr. Robert Wasnick performed an operation called upper pole nephrectomy to remove part of his kidney as well as a duplicate ureter. Juan Pablo then spent several weeks in the hospital for observation and recuperation. Due to the financial burden this has created for the family, Mr. No Shame and Friends will be playing at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett tonight to raise funds to help defray medical expenses. Juan Pablo’s father is the lead guitarist for Mr. No-Shame and his friends are coming together to show their support. The show starts at 9pm. Admission is $10 at the door and all proceeds will go to benefit Juan Pablo and his family. Door Prize with entrance, 50/50 and Silent Raffle, too. Come to dance, drum and support Juan Pablo. If you would like to contribute, but can’t make it to the event, write to misternoshame@gmail.com or send a private message to Carolina Fuentes or call Pamela Greinke at 631-276-5251 for info on how to donate.
