TRUTH Chosen To Open Festival

James Vanderbilt’s TRUTH will be the Opening Night film tomorrow at the The Hamptons International Film Festival in East Hampton. The film stars Robert Redford, Cate Blanchett, Topher Grace, and Elisabeth Moss and follows news anchor Dan Rather (Redford) during his final days at CBS News when he broadcast a report about how President Bush relied on privilege and family connections to avoid fighting in the Vietnam War. “We had the pleasure of having James Vanderbilt serve as a mentor in our Screenwriters Lab back in 2009, and we’re thrilled to have him back as the director of our Opening Night film,” said HIFF Artistic Director David Nugent. “He’s made a sharp and insightful film with wonderful performances that makes audiences consider the everchanging relationship between journalism and politics in today’s media.” TRUTH will be shown in East Hampton at Guild Hall at 7 PM, at the UA 1 Theater at 7:30, and again Sunday at 7 PM in UA 2.

CAROL Is Sunday’s Centerpiece By Miles X. Logan

In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, CAROL, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, is perhaps the most highly-anticipated showing of the festival. The story follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. Academy Award nominee Todd Haynes (FAR FROM HEAVEN) directs. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Mara tied for the Best Actress award. CAROL received a rapturous response, including a standing ovation, at its Cannes Film Festival international press screening and premiere. Critics particularly lauded Haynes’ direction, Blanchett and Mara’s performances, the cinematography, costumes and score, and deemed it a strong contender for a Cannes award. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 96 pecent approval rating based on reviews from 26 critics, with an average rating of 8.9 out of 10. On Metacritic, the film has received a weighted average score of 98 out of 100 based on 10 critics, indicating “universal acclaim.” “It’s hard to pull your eyes away from Cate Blanchett,” opined the critic Nick Romano. “The subdued color palette paints the 1950s backdrop, and Blanchett sashays through its texture in luscious reds, greens, and pinks.” Therese (Rooney Mara), a department store worker, is instantly enthralled by her presence when she walks in to her store looking for a present for her daughter. In 2011 Mara portrayed Lisbeth Salander, the title character in David Fincher’s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, based on Stieg Larsson’s

Millennium book series. She received critical acclaim for her performance and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. Blanchett came to international attention for her role as Elizabeth I of England in Shekhar Kapur’s 1998 film ELIZABETH, for which she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe Award, and earned her first Academy Award for Best Actress nomination. Her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s 2004 film THE AVIATOR brought her critical acclaim and many accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, making her the only actor to win an Oscar for portraying another Oscar-winning actor. In 2013, she starred as Jeanette “Jasmine” Francis in Woody Allen’s BLUE JASMINE for which she won numerous accolades including the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Photo Courtesy Hamptons International Film Festival

She is one of only six actresses to win Academy Awards in both leading and supporting acting categories, and the only Australian to win two acting Oscars. She is a six-time Oscar

nominee. CAROL wi ll screen at Gu i ld Hall Saturday at noon and at the Sag Harbor Cinema at 4:30 that afternoon.

Where To Grab A Quick Bite By Rick Murphy If you are new to The Hamptons, here is our little secret: Route 27, Woods Lane, Main Street, Pantigo Road and Montauk Highway are the same road. Know this and you’ve mastered the seven miles between Southampton Village and East Hampton, where the Hamptons International Film Festival will be held beginning tomorrow. There are 150 films to see and numerous special events: the trick is to find time to eat. Let’s start in East Hampton Village. As you enter the town, you’ll see Winston’s on your right at 100 Montauk Highway. Remember the place if you have access to a car, because the food is good, the prices are fair, and Winston Lyons is a well-known Jamaican chef and that’s the secret behind the magical menu. Continuing east on Montauk Highway you’ll pass the Getty station and light on your left (Oops, all of a sudden you’re on Woods Lane) and turn left into East Hampton Village (Main Street). A lot of visitors don’t realize we have an authentic pizzeria right in East Hampton Village that is as good as any Brooklyn has to offer. It’s Fierro’s (631-324-5751), right across the alley from Waldbaums on Newtown Lane

(OK — that’s your next left, at the light by the movie theater). There are a terrific variety of pies, whole or by the slice, hot and cold heroes, and a lot of stuff you wouldn’t expect, like (gasp!) healthy salads and wraps, and even Paninis. There are tables inside, or get it to go. They even have those neat little bottles of Chianti you can smuggle into the theater. Across the street next to the school, hidden down the alley next to the Middle School, is an authentic Chinese take-out place, oddly enough named Chinatown (631-324-1999). Back on Main Street and heading east, you’ll see the Dutch Motel on the right, Chen’s Garden (631-329-0333) is right next-door, and the take-out is excellent. It’s at 478 Pantigo Road, which is really Montauk Highway, which is . . . well, you know. Best Taste (631-267-8801) next to Brent’s as you enter Amagansett, is another standout Chinese take out, and if you’re going out to Montauk, don’t forget Brents (631-267-3113): it’s got the best selection of hot to-go lunches and dinners around. Breakfast sandwiches and burgers are great, too. Want Bagels? If it’s bagels you want, Goldberg’s (100 Pantigo Place, 631-329-8300)

east of East Hampton Village, is a treat, and also offers hot breakfast and tables to sit, some outside. By the way, another good bagel place is located as you are leaving town, west of Winston’s on the north side. Twice Upon A Bagel (631-537553) is at 358 Montauk Highway as you enter Wainscott. Back in East Hampton Village, if you head north on Newtown Lane after watching Fast and Furious Eight: Vin Diesel Gets A Hemi Transplant and turn left at the railroad tracks a classic Italian “Pork” store awaits with the authentic Italian heroes, great salad (try the antipasto), prepared foods like lasagna (and, of course veggie lasagna) cold drinks, and great prices. Villa Italian Specialties (631324-5110) also has a special hero each day that can be shared by two people, or maybe even three smallish leading men. Mary’s Marvelous (631-324-1055) on Newtown Lane has all the favorites from the Amagansett store, including delicious home baked treats and hearty sandwiches and soups for lunch. Eat all the sugary junk you want. Just make sure you put some kale in your smoothie and wear your gym clothes and you’ll convince everyone at the theater you are still diligently working out. By the way, the Golden Pear on the other side of the street is another good place to grab a bite in a hurry. Call 631-329-1600 to place an order. The epicenter for the HIFF crowd is, as always, John Papas Café (631-3245400) in the west end of the parking lot behind Main Street. There’s lots of seating, and it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stay or take it with you. Say hello to Alec if you see him, and don’t be surprised to see Jerry (Seinfeld, that is) or Sarah Jessica Parker in there. Many of the stars that will be in town for the festival will doubtless find their way there as well. In Southampton Head west to get to Southampton

(don’t worry about what road you are on). La Parmigiana (631-283-9752), on Hampton Road, a short walk from the theater, is another authentic Italian restaurant with pizza to go – or, sit down and grab a hot meal and have a glass of wine or two. Sip ‘n Soda (631282-2800), right down the block, is the quintessential luncheonette, and has been for generations. And yes, Gary Cooper ate there. (Note for movie trivia buffs, he’s buried in Southampton.) Citarella, newly opened, is right down the block (there are also branches in Bridgehampton and East Hampton). The Jobs Lane Deli (631-288-6552) is diagonally across the street from the movie theater and about a block down, and the small place makes a big sandwich, so wear something baggy over that black turtleneck if you want to smuggle one into the theater to watch Hunger Games: Katniss’s Baby Shower. Paul’s Italian American restaurant offers affordable sit down dinners if you can spare the time -- it’s right next door to the theater. In Westhampton Beach Hampton Coffee (631-288-4480) on 194 Mill Road is a filmgoer’s paradise. The coffee is the best around, there’s fresh baked muffins and scones, a smoothie bar, and breakfast and lunch served all day. There’s another in Water Mill (631726-2633) at 869 Montauk Highway. Look for their mobile unit as well. Sag Harbor is north of Bridgehampton (take the Turnpike) and East Hampton (RT. 114). If you are going there from Southampton, good luck unless you have GPS. Once you get there, head for the legendary Corner Bar (631-725-9760). It’s right across the street from Bay Street Theatre. The burgers are great, the drinks flow, and the patrons are friendly. Just down the block is Conca D’Oro (631-735-3167), across from the historic Sag Harbor movie theater. There is a Golden Pear there, as well as on Newtown Lane in East Hampton and Main Street in Southampton. Just south, on Madison Street, sits Il Capuccino (631-725-2747), a sit down Italian restaurant that has been doing it right for almost 50 years. They should make a movie about the garlic rolls – they are that good.

With a famed and storied career that has spanned more than six decades, Dan Rather has been one of the world’s best-known journalists for much of the last half century. He has interviewed every president since Eisenhower and personally covered almost every important dateline of the last 60 years. Rather joined CBS News in 1962. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1981 he assumed the position of anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News — a post he held for 24 years. His reporting across the network helped to turn “60 Minutes” into an institution, launched “48 Hours” as an innovative news magazine program, and shaped countless specials and documentaries. Upon leaving CBS, Rather returned to the in-depth reporting he always loved, creating the Emmy Award-winning “Dan Rather Reports” on HDNet. Now, building upon that foundation, he is president and CEO of News and Guts, an independent production company he founded that specializes in high-quality nonfiction content across a range of traditional and digital distribution channels. Join Alec Baldwin, HIFF’s Board Member and incoming Festival Co-chairman, as he goes one-on-one with Dan Rather on Saturday at 2 PM at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor.

Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa

Independent/Courtesy Gurney's Montauk

By Jessica Mackin It’s hard to find a venue in the Hamptons that exhibits the beauty that surrounds Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa. The Seawater Spa at Gurney’s is the perfect haven for relaxation, providing guests with an unparalleled experience. On a rainy day last week I headed to the spa to indulge in the Ultimate Herbal Body Wrap. What I received was the ultimate spa day in Montauk. The treatment was just what I needed to replenish my skin after a summer with too much time spent in the sun.

A lot of changes have taken place at Gurney’s over the past two years. The hotel is under new ownership led by George Filopoulos and Lloyd Goldman. The restaurant has been taken over by LDV Hospitality, bringing the wellknown Scarpetta Restaurant to Montauk, along with other dining destinations. The property has undergone major renovations, and the year-round spa destination is as magnificent as ever. The amenities are all top-of-the-line, including the signature ocean-fed seawater swimming pool, Roman bath and steam room. Enjoy the waters of

the only authentic Thalasso Center in the United States that was started over 30 years ago by the visionary founder, Nick Monte. The Thalasso programs utilize sea water and seaweed in the marine enriched environment for therapeutic purposes. The Ultimate Herbal Body Wrap I experienced is a 50-minute, three step body treatment beginning with a body polish using mineral salts combined with an aromatic body gel to exfoliate the skin, followed by a relaxing wrap with herbal infused steamed towels and finished with an application of a

rich herbal body lotion. The treatments include products with lavender essential oils for relaxation or rosemary essential oils for revitalization. The result: softer skin and a feeling of rejuvenation. A perfect treatment to experience now, at the changing of seasons. Looking for a staycation? Stay in one of Gurney’s 109 rooms, suites and beachfront cottages, each with dramatic ocean views. Enjoy the spa. Have dinner at Scarpetta. You are guaranteed nothing but an incredible experience.
