Vertu and Gelila and Wolfgang Puck celebrated the Oscars and Dream for Africa Foundation at CUT on Thursday in Beverly Hills. Clockwise from top left: Rapper Pharrell Williams, TV personality Ms. J and founder of Dream for Africa Foundation Gelila Puck, Vertu's Casey Gorman and host Wolfgang Puck, singer Macy Gray, Quincy Jones and Casey Gorman, producer Berry Gordy and designer Vera Wang.
On Wednesday Night Hampton Daze Associate Editor, Josann Jeffrey and I went to see How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, a brilliant musical comedy on Broadway directed by Rob Ashford. The show stars Nick Jonas of The Jonas Brothers. Naturally there were swarms of teenage girls waiting outside the theatre for a chance to set eyes on the heart-throb. Always young at heart and with an hour to kill before the next Jitney, we decided to join them to take photographs.

Today’s Birthday: Dinah Shore, 1916 “See the USA in your Chevrolet” she crooned at the end of her show each week during TV’s halcyon days, and the advertising jingle became Dinah Shore’s signature song. It was followed by a kiss blown to the camera. The singer was enormously popular during the show’s run from 1952 to 1962, but few knew her Southern drawl belied the fact that she was the daughter of Jewish immigrants. As a child she suffered from polio and her parents feared young Frances Rose would be crippled for life, but the determined youngster recovered and was singing professionally by the time she was 14. She sang on the radio with Frank Sinatra in 1939 and worked with Xavier Cugat the following year, using her professional name, Dinah. She signed with Columbia records and had a series of hits during the 40s, making her a natural choice for a television show. Shore was popular throughout her career, guest starring on numerous variety shows in the 70s, earning kudos for a comedic talents as well as her excellent singing voice. She hosted several afternoon talk shows including “Conversations With Dinah” from 1989 to 1991. Shore had several records reach Number One on the charts including “I’ll Walk Alone” (1944), “The Gypsy” and “The Anniversary Song” (1946), and “Buttons And Bows” (1948). She was linked to numerous leading men during her career but never in an undignified manner. Perhaps her most famous affair was with Burt Reynolds, who was 20 years younger, but it is said she also “dated” Jimmy Stewart, Sinatra, Dean Martin and Hugh Carey. She sang duets with Ella Fitzgerald, Jack Lemmon, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Pearl Bailey, George Burns, Groucho Marx, Peggy Lee, and many other greats; she was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the Ladies Professional Golfers Tour. Dinah Shore died of ovarian cancer in 1994; during her career she earned nine Emmys, a Peabody Award, and a Golden Globe.
ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) When communicating with others, put it first in your mind that you would like to communicate in a healing way. If you think first and then start talking, you will find there will be way fewer hurt feelings and/or miscommunication. Be the healer with your words this week. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Relax, take a breath and relax a little more. This is a week where going with the flow and allowing yourself to change direction if necessary really will pay off. Flexibility is not the first word one thinks of when they think of you, yet flexibility is key this week. Watch as everything falls into place. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Remember who you are. Remember all that has happened to allow you to get to this place. Trust your history; trust that everything has been leading to now and that as long as you bring all the essential parts of yourself into this moment, you can know you have everything you need. Trust yourself. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Time to find the place within you where you can stand detached from what others are doing or not doing. Loving with detachment is often your greatest challenge, and this is one of those times. Trust those you love to make their own best choices, no really trust them. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Look toward your horizon. What do you see? Get a good view of the future you want to have. How much are you working and not working, who is there and who isn’t? Look toward your horizon and get clear on what you want it to be, for the Universe would like you to have it. You will also know who you will travel with because they will share the same horizon. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) For an earth sign, it is interesting how easy it is for you to forget about your body. In some ways you can be body obsessed and yet in other ways you

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Time for some fun and play. Have you gotten all serious and grave in how you have been looking at things? Now it’s time to lighten up and see if you can do some frolicking. Touch things lightly and keep on moving. Take a break from that serious head, at least for a little while. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Over thinking things and self doubt can be your biggest challenge this week. See if you can take advantage of the other really good energies and tune in to your intuition and ‘feel’ what is really going on and how protected you truly are. Enough thinking already, wait for emotional clarity. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Balance and center are key. I know you love your extremes, but this week do your best to keep yourself in the middle, rather than at the edges of your experiences. Think about this idea of middle rather than edges (extremes), it could change everything this week. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Time to receive. I know you prefer the high ground of giving, (the idea that giving is ‘high’ ground is something you make up in your mind, by the way), but this week you will need to open yourself to receiving from others and worst yet, you will have to ask for that help! Suck it up and allow others to love you by giving to you. Ask for help! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) This is a real ‘go get it’ kind of time in your life, Aquarius, so it will be good for you to know what it is you want to go and get. Define success for yourself. Take a look at what it means to live a successful life. There is nothing you cannot achieve right now, nothing you cannot break through - just decide what you want that to be.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Organized intuition is where things are right now and I know it sounds like an impossible combination. However, this is the challenge right now. How do you honor both your intuitive process and the demands of the real world? The key will be setting your priorities. Write them down, this way your intuition can work in sync with your priorities. Try it, it is a new day. NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Asher Lee is a professional Astrologer and Tarot reader. ful vine, splendor of heaven, Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein, you are my mother. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee(3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goals. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person, must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. after 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. My prayers were answered. Thank you so very much. As requested by J.L. 48-40-35

in frigid Wisconsin who thinks he’s found the perfect sucker – a retired farmer played perfectly by Alan Arkin. Billy Crudup co-stars. The film has a few Fargo-like moments, but it tends to plod.

The Vow (PG-13) Oh boy – how many times have you seen this one: a couple falls in love, one gets in an accident and suffers amnesia, and the other has to rebuild their love from scratch. Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams are the star-crossed couple; Jessica Lange and Sam Neill co-star. It’s a snorer. Add a star if you’re brain dead.
New On DVD Act Of Valor (R) It’s been a good year for the Navy SEALs what with bin Laden and all, and Hollywood, as always, is there to hop on the gravy train and bleed it dry. There’s been a rash of these SEAL movies, and one common thread is they all purport to be based on a true story. They aren’t. They are a great vehicle for blowing the hell out of third world militants, though.

J. Edgar (R) This film was thought to be Oscar fodder but petered out quickly. Clint Eastwood (perennial Oscar nominee) directs a Dustin Lance Black (an Oscar for Milk) screenplay starring Leo DiCaprio, a three-time nominee, in J. Edgar – the longtime FBI director, of course. Naomi Watts and Judi Dench co-star. It never takes off.
New In Theaters Thin Ice (R) Greg Kinnear and Lea Thompson star in this little suspense thriller from Jill Sprecher, who wrote and produced. Kinnear is a con man
The Rum Diary (R) Johnny Depp is infatuated with the writer Hunter S. Thompson, whom he’s already played once. This time around he takes a Thompson novel whose central character just happens to be a booze-swilling cad just like Thompson. Depp loves doing these quirky characters, but unfortunately Thompson was oftentimes a selfabsorbed jerk who, frankly, was as crazy as dingbat.
Now Playing The Secret World of Arrietty *(G) The latest from Disney Animation is a marvelous little story about a tiny 14-year-old girl, who lives in the recesses of a suburban home unbeknownst to the owners. The little girl makes rare excursions above the floorboards to gather supplies, and on one such foray, a 12 year-old boy discovers her. Her existence, and the existence of all like her, depends on him. Directors Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Gary Rydstrom have made a tender and touching film that will resonate with young and old alike. In Darkness * (R) You may have to go to the city to catch the latest from the director Agnieszka Holland, but this film is well worth the trip. Based on a true story, In Darkness tells the tale of a sewer worker in Nazioccupied Poland who is paid to hide a group of Jews in labyrinth of the sewer system. It is a story of survival and much more. Don’t miss it.
