Five Presidents
As a writer for the popular TV series, “West Wing” and “House of Cards,” Rick Cleveland has illustrated the lives of American Presidents, the fictional Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey). Now at the Bay Street Theater, his new play Five Presidents, invites us into The Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California, on the occasion of that President’s funeral. Here, in April 1994, the exclusive fraternity, The President’s Club - Gerald Ford (John Bolger), George H.W. Bush (Mark Jacoby), Jimmy Carter (Martin L’Herault), Ronald Reagan (Steve Sheridan) and Bill Clinton (Brit Whittle) - gathers. The ambiance is more conciliatory than not, although an overly-
eager Reagan insists on delivering the eulogy for the impeached ex-president, a situation they’d all prefer to avoid. Indeed, Sheridan’s Reagan, in the early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease, explodes into bouts of irrational anger and defensiveness all while bragging, most especially, about his sex exploits. But what stands out most in Sheridan’s portrayal, is his resemblance to Reagan’s sidekick Bonzo, the monkey. His satirical caricature is by far the comedic highlight of this production. As directed by Mark Clements, the other more realistic portrayals mesh into a resonant ensemble with Ford as the wise and tempered master, Bush as the guard of Republican sanctity, Carter as a somewhat shy, overlooked

politician, and Clinton as a mover and shaker of quick wit and intellect. As the incumbent Clinton remarks, “(This is) the most exclusive club in the world and at the same time anyone can get in” with the notable exception of “blacks and women.” Standing on the threshold of an upcoming presidential election, following Obama’s final term in office, and marked by Hillar y Clinton’s reemergence as a significant candidate, Bill’s remark frames the irony at the core of Cleveland’s play. These presidents are as much a product of their own forcefulness and ambition as they are victims of the worldly affairs by which they are, and have been, confronted. Watching them up close and personal, we sense their warm and human nature. In this respect, it is a flawless production, appropriately designed by Mary Folino (costumes), Jesse Klug (lighting) and Todd Edward Ivins (set). It’s the directness, openness, and simplicity of these American leaders that creates a cajoling, reassuring evening at the theater.

Gideon Glick holds the reigns in Joshua Harmon’s new play Significant Other at the Laura Pels Theater. In a performance that moves from quirky and comedic to quietly tragic, Glick portrays a single young man among three close girlfriends, all of whom get married in the course of the play. Harmon’s dark comedy speaks to the obstacles young people face

in the real world. To that end, Glick (Jordan Berman) demonstrates the awkwardness of a single gay guy, flopping around cheerfully (or trying to be cheerful) all while looking for love, only to land sadly in a series of unwelcoming arms. Trip Cullman directs with sensitivity, and the supporting cast is vibrant, especially Barbara Barrie as Jordan’s endearing, albeit fatalistic, grandmother and John Behlmann disguising himself as three distinctly different love objects. As designed by Mark Wendland, the set is a multi-level platform that transforms into the characters’ homes, work places, and marriage venues. Still, it’s Glick’s portrayal that keeps us engaged in this contemporary tale of loneliness and desire.
A Long, Long Time Ago…
If you can, catch The Twentieth Century Way, at the Rattlestick Theater, until Sunday. It’s based on a 1914 Long Beach police strategy to arrest gay men, using actors to snag unsuspecting victims. As written by Tom Jacobson, the two hander is a series of metatheatrical hijacks, which two outstanding actors, Will Bradley and Robert Mammana, pull off, transforming through myriad disguises. Directed by Michael Michetti, the play’s complex plot requires some real sleuthing on the audience’s part, just to keep up with it. Indeed, it’s the politics of everyday life, from the body politic to the common man, that pervades and prevails in each of these new works.

Independent Dining Salmon Roe & Corn Purée Cucumber Wheel With Shiitake Mushroom METHOD Begin by removing the stems from the mushrooms. Dehydrating the mushrooms will be the most time consuming task in this recipe, Leave at least 10 hours to properly dehydrate the mushroom caps. To do this, place the caps of the mushrooms on the racks of your dehydrator and set it to medium heat for about 8 to 10 hours. If you do not have a dehydrator you can spread the mushroom caps evenly over a sheet tray and place them in an oven set to 150 degrees. Be sure to use the

convection fan if it is available on your oven. While this is happening, place the corn cobs (kernels removed and set aside) in a large stock pot and fill with enough water to cover the corn cob. Add the thyme and bay leaf and let simmer for about three hours to really infuse the corn flavor into your stock. After three hours strain the stock. Warm the corn kernels in the hot strained stock. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes. Purée the entire mixture then strain it through a fine sieve. Return the hot corn purée to the stock pot. Make a cornstarch slurry with 1/4 cup of water and an ounce of corn starch. Whisk the slurry into the warm corn purée over medium low heat. Whisk until the purée begins to thicken, then fold in the cream cheese and season to your liking with salt.

When the mixture becomes thick, transfer it to a shallow cooling dish. Cover and cool in the fridge for at least three hours. When the mushrooms are dried, grind them into a fine powder using a spice grinder and set aside until you are ready to assemble. To assemble take one of the cucumber wheels, squeeze some corn purée on top, then add the salmon roe, a bit of sea salt, a drizzle of olive oil. Finish with the micro bok choy and some shiitake powder.
