Game Change: Julianne Moore As Sarah Palin By Winnie Bonnelli
Regardless of one’s personal political leanings, HBO’s premiere of “Game Change,” the screen adaptation of Mark Helperin and John Heilemann’s non-fiction examination of John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, on Saturday at 9 PM, is a compelling view. This piercing behind-the-scenes profile of McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, might evoke the wrath of the former soccer mom from Wasillan, Alaska, who has labeled the bio-pic “fiction” sight unseen. However, it’s a good movie, as opposed to being a balanced documentary. Julianne Moore, who plays Palin in “Game Change” expressed genuine admiration for her on-screen protagonist. “I did a tremendous amount of research and one of the things that I watched was her reality show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” to familiarize myself with the family and with her family dynamic. That was frankly adorable. She’s really a very caring, very involved parent. And to see that politically, when have we seen a parent portrayed in that way? This is a woman who had a 19-year-old son and a four month old, and she was in politics. You don’t generally see that happening on a national stage. I think it was something really compelling and very interesting about what she was juggling during those 60 days.” Moore, who copped Oscar, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild nominations for her portrayal of a betrayed wife in 2002’s Far from Heaven, noted, “I certainly have profound respect for the historical nature of her candidacy. To be taken out of state government and thrust onto the national, international stage like that was a tremendous amount of pressure, which was the other thing I was attempting to capture. What does that do to somebody psychologically? The fact that she was able to perform the way she did was simply amazing.” Interspersed with archival footage, one of the more gripping moments was Julianne Moore, as Sarah Palin, watching Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. While Fey took artistic liberties, Moore didn’t have that luxury. Her portrayal had to be accurate and believable – a challenge that required hours of dedicated practice. “The first thing I did was hire a vocal coach because she has an incredibly idiosyncratic way of speaking and I really felt I needed to capture that. We looked at hours and hours of footage and read absolutely everything I could get my hands on.

It’s a really a daunting task to play somebody who is not only a living figure, but a hugely well known one. For me, the most important thing was accuracy. “We have her displaying moments of sheer brilliance. I think, certainly for one was her unveiling. I think the whole country took a collective gasp, like ‘Who is she? Where is she from?’ She was so incredibly charismatic, so unbelievably able to communicate, and a true Populist,” stated Moore, who earned another Golden Globe and BAFTA nomination for her star turn in 2010’s comedy drama The Kids Are All Right. “In an election where Obama had been leading handily, once McCain picked Palin, it seemed to flip everything on its head. The whole country was kind of shaken up about what’s going to happen now? And particularly they brought her in because they felt here was this huge void left when Hillary left. So they were going to galvanize all of the female voters, and it was quite historic, actually,” she added. Moore, who will be seen in the upcoming theatrical releases Being Flynn and The English Teacher, continued, “Especially, in a country where most of our leaders have been ivy league educated, white men, suddenly, here was this working class mother who just popped out and seemed to be able to command the world. Of course, upon further inspection, she didn’t necessarily have the experience necessary to be able to lead our country as vice president or potentially president of the United States.” Does Moore relate to Palin’s parental instincts? “Yes. I’m ashamed to admit I chased down an ice skating coach once because they messed up the music to my daughter’s program. So I think we’ve all had experience that maybe we’re not so proud of where we’ve gotten very intense about our children.”

The TENTS: NY Fashion Week Do NY Fashion Week is coming home, to your home. For the first time ever, NY Fashion Week has offered an open invitation to the general public. “The Tents”, a definitive behindthe-scenes New York Fashion Week documentary, is now available via VOD (Video on Demand) and as well as Amazon, iTunes, and Playstation. A fast-paced and meticulous behind-the-scenes history of New York’s contemporary fashion industry and its evolution from the downtown art-and-loft scene to the megainvestment tent shows of Fashion Week at Bryant Park, “The Tents” reveals how New York City became a world-class fashion destination along with Paris, Milan and London. The film describes the evolution to high profile and high art at Lincoln Center as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Together with co-producer and fashion cinematographer, Marcus K. Jones, director James Belzer, a long-time insider on the business and ad sales side with Fairchild and Harper’s Bazaar, tells “eighteen years of fashion history in 78 minutes,” and says, “It was amazing to
me that no one ever told this story on film . . . we knew we had to do it.” “The Tents” achieves depth and authenticity with a multitude of insiders opening up on camera, including Donna Karan, Isaac Mizrahi, Betsy Johnson, Carolina Herrera, Hal Rubenstein along with the widely recognized founders of Fashion Week, Fern Mallis and Stan Herman. The film is a verritable Who’s Who of contemporary fashion industry with the likes of Tommy Hilfiger, Zac Posen, Carson Kressley, Russell Simmons, Patrick McMullan, Judy Licht, Suzy Menkes, plus fashion editors: Nina Barcia, Teri Agins, Michael Musto, Glenda Bailey and Stefano Tonchi. Today’s Birthday: Wanda Sykes, 1964
Wanda Sykes, born in Virginia and raised in Maryland, didn’t necessarily aspire to be a comedian – the fact is she’s so damn funny, it was inevitable. Sykes earned a B.S. in marketing from Howard University where legend has it she agreed to compete in an amateur talent contest; she stole the show. In 1997 she was hired to write for “The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show,” and then by Chris Rock, who also offered a spot riffing on stage with him. Her career took off. In 1998 HBO was looking for a vehicle to get Larry David, the co-creator of “Seinfeld,” in front of the camera. Sykes landed the part of his wife’s best friend on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and the test audience loved her. HBO then turned the special into a series, with Sykes keeping her recurring role. Sykes was nominated for three Primetime Emmys and won in 1999 for Comedy Writing. She won the American Comedy Award in 2001 for “Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic.” She won three more Emmys, in 2002, 2004 and 2005. In 2010 she won a GLAAD award for promoting a good image of equal rights for gays and lesbians. Sykes famously said if folks are opposed to gay marriage they shouldn’t marry gays.

to do needs to be based on whether or not you are moved to do a thing. I know you love spending time in your head, yet the heart is where it is at right now.
ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) The stars align this week for you to be the winner regardless of what others do or try to do. It is all win/ win and you may find that things fall into place a bit easier than you may think. Don’t think ‘warfare’ in negotiations with others, think more along the lines of ‘nudging’ others to see you point of view.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) I know the energy feels sluggish right now, however, take the time to remember that you have natural gifts in helping others and know that you will never lose these gifts. You do need to remember that not everyone is going to be able to receive or use the energy you give them, so when you do give it away, give it away without expectation.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Venus, your ruler, is in your sign, which makes this time an opportunity to make things real. Things which have been only ideas up until now may be brought into form with more ease than you are used to. Don’t blow off a great opportunity because it comes too easily.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Magical time is at hand and your communications skills have never been better. Say what you mean and mean what you say and make sure you are saying it. Don’t be distracted by how things appear to be, they can and very well may change in a moment. Think magic.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) You usually like change but the way changes are happening right now and the pace at which they are happening may be scaring you to the tips of your toes. Things may feel very out of control, yet you need only look to your past to see how you have survived bigger than this and you know you can trust yourself.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) It is all important that you keep your head in a good place right now. Fight off the bad moods and do your best to stay in the moment. The dark clouds may seem very big, yet they are passing and if you get too lost in them you may not be able to hold on to the light. Take hold of your thoughts.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) A week where you can discover parts of yourself you didn’t know you had. Stay on course and put one foot in front of the other and remember who you are. Show up with the whole of yourself in any situation. Don’t become who everyone else is, stay true to yourself.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) You will need to remain objective. Stand outside of the drama of things going on and wait and see attitude. Resist the urge to jump to conclusions, rather allow situations to unfold before you become critical of yourself or others or the situation itself. It is all about objectivity.
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Once again focus is everything. Stay in the mindset of all that there is to be grateful for in your life rather than getting distracted by the little annoying things or the big annoying things even. Choose to stay hopeful and in gratitude.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Be courageous. You will need to face your fears and remember that courage is not the absence of fear. It is being in the fear and yet still moving forward. This is a time for
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) It is all about what you are feeling, rather than what makes rational sense. The criteria of what to do and what not

bold action, no running away, only running toward. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Per fect time to break the old patterns that may have held you back. These are family patterns which you may have enfolded into your life like bad habits. Resist the old way and embrace a new way of doing things, a new way of facing big situations. Hamptons Restaurant Week After serving more than 209,000 prix fixe meals since 2003, Hamptons Restaurant Week kicks off its tenth annual campaign this March. From Sunday, March 18 through Sunday, March 25, participating restaurants offer threecourse prix fixe menus for $19.95 or $24.95 or both $19.95 and $24.95, which will be available every night they are open except Saturday when it must only be offered until 7 PM. East End vineyards and lodging entities broaden the scope of the eight-day promotion by offering exclusive Hamptons Restaurant Week deals. Vineyards take part by offering discounts in tasting rooms – 15-percent off select bottles, 20-percent off select cases or a $5 flight of five tasting wines – or by offering restaurant participants a
wholesale discount on wines to sell to diners for $19.95 and/or $24.95 per bottle during the week. Lodging properties will offer special rates that may include 15-percent off accommodations; stay two nights, get the third night free; or stay one night, get the second at half price. Residents and visitors are given the chance to save while dining out at new restaurants (or old favorites), sampling vintages from local and notable vineyards, or staying at a unique lodging property before the start of “high season.” For participants, this media-able, value-pricing campaign delivers a surge in business, a return on investment and community goodwill as they put their best foot forward to attract new and returning patrons. The campaign has partnered with Maureen’s Haven, a local

Mouthwatering Morsels At Michaels’ Last Saturday night I journeyed into Springs to try Michaels’ Restaurant, a rustic neighborhood eatery offering up continental cuisine with Asian, Italian and French influences. With a lively bar on the right hand side offering up several beers on tap, Michaels’ rests between comfy casual and sophistication, with dramatic red curtains in the dining room. Couples were the main patrons of the place, with a few families thrown into the mix. Michaels’ has been under the leadership of Chef Luis DeLeora for the past four years and
offers everything from corn and crab pancakes and Diver scallop Napoleons to crusted Yellow Fin tuna and roasted Peking duck. For the month of March, in honor of the Food and Wine Festival, the Accabonac restaurant is offering a three-course prix fixe, with each course paired with a specific glass of wine off the 90 strong wine list. The prix fixe includes five appetizer choices, five entree choices and four options for dessert. For our first course, we opted for fireroasted Gulf prawns over a light papaya and

citrus salsa and Thai-spiced Prince Edward Island mussels. The enormous prawns arrived, two on a plate, resting daintily on a vibrant orange bed of papaya sprinkled with cilantro, offering just the right balance of coolness to the spicy shellfish. This was paired with a buttery California Merlot. The mussels were spiced with red curry, lemongrass, ginger and garlic, creating a deep yet delicate flavor. The dry California Pinot Grigio highlighted the ginger and citrus notes. The second course arrived. I had the grilled 16-ounce grass fed strip steak, accompanied by truffle and parmesan cheese fritters, garlic sautéed spinach and smothered with a red wine demi glace. The Toasted Head Merlot, a bit more pungent than the previous one, married with the steak beautifully. The braised New Zealand lamb shank, was falling off the bone and cooked to perfection. The chive whipped potatoes were creamy and fluffy. And the generous portion of lamb au jus tied it all together. That, and the Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington state, a full-bodied, robust wine, could stand up to the hearty entree. We ended the meal with two desserts, a delicious mango mousse cake with a berry

sauce, and a cinnamon rice pudding in a crispy cookie shell. The cake was paired with a light and sweet Terra D’oro Moscato, which proved to be the best pairing of the night. The wine and food pairing menu will be offered for the rest of the month and costs $45 per person ($30 for the food only). Michaels’ regular menu features 10 appetizer items with prices ranging from $8 to $18 and 10 entrees from $19 to $36. Yun-Fat wowed audiences all over the world and will doubtless do so here as well. The plot, set in 1920, revolves around two mobsters in Sichuan who engage in a fierce rivalry that is not only funny but over-the-top violent. It is easily the best film released in this young year and will doubtless be one of the best you’ll see in 2012.

them up in space, on motorcycles, or just about anywhere else. In this case Ben Stiller enlists Eddie Murphy in a farcical plot to rob a Madoff-like swindler who bilked a luxury high rise staff of their retirement funds. Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Judd Hirsch et al play it perfectly. Alan Alda is perfect as the evil financier. Tea Leone plays the sympathetic FBI agent, and Gabourney Sidibe is beyond charming as an amorous safecracker. Make a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy – and the kids will like it, too. Act Of Valor (R ) It’s been a good year for the Navy SEALs what with bin Laden and all, and Hollywood, as always, is there to hop on the gravy drain and bleed it dry. There’s been a rash of these SEAL movies, and one common thread is they all purport to be based on a true story. They aren’t. They are a great vehicle for blowing the hell out of third world militants, though.
