When Your Church Is Outdoors That’s not the case in Riverhead, Town Clerk Diane Wilhelm informed. No alcohol is allowed at public parks and beaches, so “people don’t look to do a lot of receptions here,” she said. Up on the North Fork, those who want to include libations with their outdoor ceremony often choose to say their vows at any of a number of area wineries. The town code in Riverhead does provide waivers for the serving of alcoholic beverages as part of its special permitting process. But the process calls for special insurance and security, so people generally don’t pursue outdoor receptions at public parks and beaches. Instead, said Wilhelm, “we don’t really fuss.” People will have brief ceremonies at the Iron Pier beach pavilion or the gazebo at Reeves Beach. “It’s a pretty setting overlooking the Sound,” she observed. Also on the North Fork, Goldsmith’s Inlet in Southold Town is a popular locale for wedding ceremonies, Town Recreation Supervisor Ken Reeves informed. His department has a special application designed for wedding ceremonies on town beaches. They’re due at least three

Wide open blue skies, crystal clear water lapping the sun-drenched sand. Nothing says romance like the East End’s beautiful beaches. For many couples, their shared love of the outdoors has to be underscored when it’s time to say their wedding vows. Beachside ceremonies and love expressed al fresco add to the mystique of the moment, and when it comes to gorgeous settings for stating your love, the North and South Fork have an endless array. But you can’t just hop on down to the beach with your friends, family, and favorite officiant. Most municipalities require permits if you’re bringing a bunch of friends to an outdoor public place for your wedding or reception. Here’s an overview of what might be required. (Make sure you check with your individual town or village to see if they have special, or additional, rules.) If the plan is to just meet with a handful of your nearest and dearest for a brief ceremony,
most municipalities don’t require permits. It’s when the crowd is larger -- generally over 50 people -- and the celebration is more extensive, that special permit requirements begin to kick in. On Shelter Island, Town Clerk Dorothy Ogar affirmed permitting depends on the size of the crowd attending. If a proposal includes music or staging, the town board would have to approve an outdoor assembly permit, which runs about $200. Indian Wells and Atlantic Avenue Beaches in Amagansett and Navy Road Beach and Kirk Park in Montauk are the most popular public settings in East Hampton, Town Clerk Carol Brennan reported. Permits are required for assemblies over 50, and, if a reception is the desire, a review of plans for music, length of time, potential parking waivers, or bonfires is in order. In East Hampton Town, tents aren’t allowed on the beaches, but wedding guests can enjoy adult beverages.

How many people are invited, how many vehicles are expected, the length of time for the use of the space and how many temporary parking permits are needed are some of the questions asked on the permit. It’s free to town residents. Nonresidents expecting fewer than 50 guest pay $50; $75 if a larger crowd is expected. Like other municipalities may, Southold Town asks for a refundable cleanup deposit of $250. In Southampton, the town website offers an extensive list of dos and don’ts for facility use at public beaches. The Parks & Recreation Department oversees requests for facility use permits. Find the rules on their section of the website. If you want to host your outdoor event in one of the region’s incorporated villages, be sure to check with officials there, since their rules could be different from the town they’re located in. For state sites, you need to get permission from the regional representative of the state parks department.

These days a wedding isn't just a single event, but a year long celebration. It's a magnificent time to join together with family and friends to celebrate. In September of 2012 my now husband Joe Cipro popped the question. I have a knack for party planning and I always thought planning a wedding would be rather simple. Perhaps I underestimated the whole experience. Here we were setting off on a journey of budgeting, planning, shopping, planning, celebrating and more planning. First order of business, the date. Right away I knew we had to get married before summer time. Working in the Hamptons means long summer hours and crazy schedules. That gave us eight months, a breeze I figured! We decided on April 27 at The Hedges Inn in East Hampton. I've always loved The Hedges Inn, overlooking Town Pond. It has even been a location for a bridal shoot I did in a past issue of The Independent Bride. We also lucked out booking the venue a week before the venue and room prices doubled for the season. I always like to get a good deal. Now for the dress, something I also lucked out with. I took a shot in the dark and ordered a 75 percent off final sale Vera Wang dress that was just perfect. I wanted an old hollywood glamour type feel to the dress and the wedding as a whole. It was the dress I had always dreamed of. A quick trip to Stitch in Southampton
for alterations and it was a perfect fit. With the three most important wedding items ready to go (husband, dress and venue), it was on to the rest of the celebrations. We threw an engagement party at Bread & Tulips in New York City in November. Joe's family is from Maryland while mine lives in the Hamptons. We wanted to meet somewhere in the middle. We wined and dined our guests while many friends and family were able to meet for the first time. Next up, the bachelorette party! I must say I have the best group of girlfriends. Twelve of us boarded Spirit Airlines (never again, but that's a whole different story) and took off for a February weekend in South Beach. My Maid of Honor, my sister Jenna, was living in Palm Beach at the time, so this trip was perfect. We partied it up at Nikki Beach and Wall at the W Hotel and spent our days at the spa at The Palms. My bridal shower took place in March. My mom hosted it at our home in East Hampton and it was tea party themed. Champs, cupcakes and tea . . . it was a super fun afternoon with family and friends. Now in between all of the fun events was the prepping. Dance lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studio took over our Tuesday evenings. Sometimes I felt like the walking dead trying to learn the foxtrot after The Independent's deadline day. I'm so glad we did it because

it's something I will remember forever (the experience and the dance steps). Every waking hour was filled with invitations and guest lists, tastings and budgets. At the time it felt like a huge chore, but in the end it was worth every minute and dollar. The week of the big day we had so much planned. First was the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner at Nick & Toni's in East Hampton. The dinner in the newly renovated restaurant staple was amazing as always. The next night we hosted a meet up at Wolffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, where our guests who came a day early could enjoy live music and wine. It was great to give our guests, especially those from out of town and/ or had never been to the Hamptons, something fun everyone could participate in. The wedding day I woke up at The Hedges Inn and had a fantastic breakfast at the Inn. I must note that Inn keeper Ann Clarke took amazing care of us through this whole experience. The time had come. My mom and my dad

walked down the aisle to the music of a strolling violinist. The ceremony was short and sweet, just like we wanted it, in the garden at The Hedges Inn. It was a beautiful afternoon, we couldn't have asked for better weather. We had done it! Onto the cocktail hour and dinner. It was the perfect night, filled with love. Friends and family danced the night away and we made a ton of beautiful memories.
