Hampton Daze HAMPTON DAZE By Jessica Mackin

By Jessica Mackin

www.hamptondaze.com

This weekend we celebrated the birthday of Hampton Daze Magazine’s Associate Editor, Josann Jeffrey, in New York City. Multiple drag shows plus a ton of Asian Food equals a recipe for a legendary weekend. We stayed at the Empire Hotel, Chuck Bass style. After getting ready we headed out for the night. We started with a glass of champagne at the Plaza Hotel’s Champagne Bar to kick things off. Next was dinner at Tao, the swanky Asian restaurant with a huge golden Buddha in the center of the room. The wait was long but the food was delish. Following Tao it was off to Upstairs at The Kimberly Hotel, one of my favorite rooftop lounges with a spectacular view of the city. On Saturday we headed to brunch at Traffic - Hells Kitchen where, to our surprise and excitement, we enjoyed our brunch with a side of drag show,

which takes place at the restaurant every Saturday. Despite the show we had at brunch we had already made reser vations at Lucky Cheng’s, Downtown Drag Cabaret Dinner Theatre, for that night. At dinner we enjoyed more drag cabaret with a side of family style Chinese food. As part of the show they have each table nominate someone to compete in a lap dance competition with a complete stranger. All in good fun, we nominated the birthday girl. After Lucky Cheng’s, cheeks sore from laughing and bellies full of Chinese, we traveled seven blocks north to the complete opposite end of the spectrum - Coyote Ugly. I always expected the place to be somewhat of a tourist attraction but it really is just as dirty and dive-y as in the movie. We expected a bar fight to break out at any moment. The girls

dancing on the bar kept calling us to get on the bar with them but most of us, including myself, chickened out. Apparently lap dances at Lucky Cheng’s are ok but dancing on the bar at Coyote Ugly definitely crosses some sort of line. We quickly finished our drinks so not to be targeted again and headed to Joshua Tree for 80’s music videos. Around midnight we got a cab back to the hotel bar to enjoy the list of Gossip Girl Cocktails. All

of a sudden the narrator of our lives started speaking, “Spotted, seven friends at the Empire Hotel celebrating the end of a spectacular birthday weekend by sipping “S” and “B” cocktails. Dressed to the nines, no one would ever know the dive they had been to prior. Don’t worry ladies and gents; your secret is safe with me. You know you love me! XOXO, Gossip Girl.” www.hamptondaze.com twitter.com/HamptonDazeMag

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Okay, so you do need to pay attention to what you are doing with your energy. You may be attracting some wacky people or situations and your response to these weird things is the most important thing. Weird stuff happens sometimes, we can only choose how we’ll react. Choose wisely. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) You may be feeling a bit of a surge of energy this week and it is probably a good idea to tread lightly with all that power. Anger can be a good and healthy expression, just remember there are other options. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Just stay focused on how good it is to be able to feel your feelings so intensely. Romance may be highlighted, or you may just find yourself being filled with love for someone or something and you will need to honor and follow those feelings – you’re having them for a reason, discover why. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Okay, time to get moving and shaking! This is the week that begins the movement forward, the time you have been waiting for. Take your time. This can be a wonderful opportunity to create new ways of moving through your life – Go and Do It! VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Good week to just chill out and enjoy yourself every chance you get. Balance times of sitting and doing nothing with other moments of profound activity. This is a week to putter, which is relaxed productivity – give yourself the time to do so. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Some sobering advice may come out of the blue and really help you if you’re in a jam. Look for a point of grounding and stability and avoid any flights of fancy, take a cold hard look at thing. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Ignore the weird things that may be happening that you aren’t quite sure about, yet feel them going on. What is happening front and center in your life is far more interesting than anything you may be ‘feeling’ is going on behind the scenes. Trust the now and what you see and hear for real. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Go ahead and start talking. Share your feelings and your needs and whatever else has been bouncing around in your head. Really – this week the words for any hard conversations really will come more easily and will be heard in the best possible light. Get talking! CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) You, like Gemini above, may have to deal with some strong emotions and it will be best to remember to count to 10 before you respond to things. Anger is not the only option, you may be able to hold to your feelings and still negotiate your way through. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Great week to be your shining upbeat self. Think positive thoughts

Today’s Birthday:60 Stanley Tucci, 19 You’ve seen him all over the television and in scores of major motion pictures, a chameleon-like presence equally at home as a soldier (Prizzi’s Honor) or a male romantic lead (Julie & Julia). He often played gangsters or assorted sickos in his early career. He’s been a restaurant owner (the delightful Big Night), a middle-Eastern assassin (The Pelican Brief), a stowaway (The Imposters), doing Shakespeare (A Midsummer’s Night Dream), and a gay-diva in The Devil Wears Prada. Tucci studied where so many local wouldbe actors do – at SUNY Purchase. He landed the role in Prizzi’s Honor in 1985 and then starred on TV in “Wiseguy.” Tucci co-wrote and co-directed Big Night, the gastronomical classic about the ultimate dinner staged for a celebrity who never shows up. The role wasn’t much of a stretch for Tucci – he once owned the Finch Tavern restaurant in Croton Falls. He’s been employed ever since. Starring with Jennifer Lopez in Maid in Manhattan, working with Paul Newman and the all star cast in Sam Mendes’ Road to Perdition, and landing his largest role in a major Hollywood production when Steven Spielberg cast him as the ambitious, officious manager of The Terminal. Tucci has three children, and once dated Edie Falco. His wife Kate Tucci died of breast cancer in 2009. He is currently engaged to English literary agent Felicity Blunt, the sister of Tucci’s The Devil Wears Prada co-star Emily Blunt, who introduced the couple. and spread some positive energy every chance you can. Linguini With Pesto & Roasted Vegetables Ingredients (serves 4) 2 red peppers 2 zucchini 8 plum tomatoes 1 red onion 1 head of cauliflower 1/2 bunch of basil 8 spears of asparagus 1/3 c of Parmesan cheese 1 tsp chopped garlic 10 oz bag of spinach 1/2 c toasted pine nuts juice from 1/2 a lemon 3/4 c olive oil 2 oz. butter 2 boxes of dried linguini pasta salt and pepper to taste Method Begin by bringing a large pot

of water to a boil. While the water boils you can start processing the vegetables by slicing the zucchini and the onion, removing the seeds from and slicing the peppers and tomatoes, and cutting the cauliflower into small florets. Then toss all the processed vegetables in a mixing bowl with a little bit of salt and pepper as well as a 1/4 cup of the olive oil. Spread the vegetables out evenly over a sheet pan and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Now to make the pesto sauce you will need a bowl of ice water to quickly cool the asparagus and spinach, your water should now be boiling. Cook the asparagus in the boiling water for 45 seconds before

removing it from the boiling water and submerging it in the ice water, do the same for the bag of spinach. When the vegetables have been cooled in the ice water remove them and strain off any excess water. Now in a blender add the asparagus, spinach, toasted pine nuts, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, Parmesan cheese, and salt and pepper and blend on high for 30 seconds. To cook the pasta boil another large pot of fresh water. Once the

water boils, salt the water and cook the pasta for about 10 minutes stirring often. When the pasta is cooked, strain it into a large mixing bowl. In a sauté pan gently heat the pesto and melt the butter in with it. The vegetables should be finished at this point so now you will toss the pasta in 1/2 the pesto sauce. Top the pasta with the roasted vegetables and spoon the rest of the pesto sauce over the top. www.chefjoecipro.com

Coming Soon The Iron Lady (PG-13) Meryl Streep, of course, nails the role of former Great Britain Prime M i n i s t e r Margaret Thatcher, but an uninspired script keeps the film from ever really taking off.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (PG-13) We never did buy in to Robert Downey Jr. playing the world’s smartest detective, just as we have trouble seeing him as a super hero (re: Iron Man). This is really just holiday season filler from Warner Brothers, a splashy, noisy action-filled romp that offers little in substance.

dor of heaven, Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein, you are my mother. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee(3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). New Year’s Eve (PG-13) How can a movie with the greatest cast in the history of cinema bomb so badly? Garry Marshall has assembled an allstar cast to romp through Katherine Fugate’s sometimes funny but often mean-spirited script consisting of a dozen vignettes, all occurring on (duh) New Year’s Eve. Halle Berry, DeNiro, Jon Bon Jovi, Jessica Biel, Sarah Jessica Parker are among those who go down with the script. Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol * (PG-13) We know, we know, it’s hard to fathom that Tom Cruise can be such an effective macho guy. In this episode his character, Ethan Hunt, goes undercover after the IMF is shut down. His mission: clear the good name of the agency. Guess what? It rocks, a mesmerizing action ride so intense that it ranks among the year’s best. Don’t miss it. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy * (R) The remake of John Le Carre’s spy novel – the author co-wrote the script – is a wonderfully directed thriller during which the audience unravels the clues. Set at the height of the Cold War, Britain’s secret intelligence unit has apparently been compromised by a double agent. A disgraced former spy, played by Gary Oldman, is hired to find the mole. Tom Hardy, Colin Firth and John Hurt co-star. Oldman will surely get Oscar support

for his remarkable performance, and the film, a legitimate cliffhanger, may earn a nomination as well. We Need To Talk About Kevin (R) Tilda Swinton is at her best when she plays complex, flawed women, and so it is no secret she was cast in this cumbersome psychological thriller about a mother’s relationship with her son (Ezra Miller) as he grows older – and more evil. John C. Reilly, a bit miscast, co-stars. Lynne Ramsey directs with a deft hand. Outrage * (R) No one does underworld gang violence like the Japanese, and Takeshi Kitano’s latest is chock full of twists, turns, and bloodshed as rival yakuza clans vie for control of the underworld. Sleeping Beauty (R) A New York City student, paying for an education through a series of menial jobs, becomes a prostitute by allowing herself to be sedated and then used sexually. Emily Browning is luminous, but struggles through a heavy-handed script. The Artist (PG-13) A silent screen star circa 1927 realizes that the coming “talkies” will end his career; meanwhile, a young extra dreams of stardom. This Weinstein offering, certainly outside-the-box, is an example of a production company taking chances and succeeding – the film is a wonderment, where-in actors shine, lighting and costumes rule, and there isn’t a special effect or 3-D frame in sight. A terrific, mustsee film. A Dangerous Method (R) Sony is hoping to generate some Oscar buzz for this film, a vehicle for Keira Knightley, playing a troubled women under the care of two of the world’s greatest shrinks – Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). The Descendants *(R) We have our early Best Actor favorite and he is – ta da— George Clooney, who turns in a flawless performance as a father forced to consider selling his family land in Hawaii after his wife suffers an accident and lapses into a coma. Written and directed by Alexander Payne, whose Sideways also exhibited his ability to make profound films with a light touch. From the Kaui Hart Hemmings novel, this film is one of the year’s best. Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard and Shailene Woodley are all brilliant in co-starring roles.
