Jean Shafiroff and The Weinstein Company hosted a luncheon with Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh in honor of The Weinstein Company film My Week with Marilyn, on January 10th at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood. The film stars Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh and documents the brief period filmmaker Colin Clark spent with Marilyn Monroe during the filming of The Prince and the Showgirl in England during the late 1950s. Today’s Birthday: Virginia Woolf, 1882 Woolf, a gifted and prolific writer and editor, is now regarded as one of the foremost proponents of feminism. Her essay, A Room, used the works of Jane Austen and Emily and Charlotte Bronte to illustrate the rich vein of women writers throughout history and the need for feminist independence. Not coincidentally she was a critic of class-structure and was also known as an impassioned pacifist, which drew public ire during the world wars. Woolf suffered from bi-polar disorder, which often debilitated her to the point that she couldn’t read or write. The symptoms led to a severe and long lasting depression, which at times proved over-bearing. At her best, though, she produced a remarkable body of work including essays, novels, books, letters and poems. Woolf was among the founders of the Modernist movement, which also includes T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and Gertrude Stein according to her biographer, C. D. Merriman. One of her more famous works, Mrs. Dalloway (1925) inspired the film The Hours starring Nicole Kidman, who donned a nasal prosthesis to portray Woolf. The onset of World War II proved particularly unsettling for Woolf and her husband, Leonard, who was Jewish and feared for his life. Woolf suffered through a sustained bout of migraine headaches. On March 28, 1941 Woolf drowned herself in a river near her Sussex home. She left a suicide note addressed to her husband. It read: “Dearest, I feel certain I am going mad again . . . And I shan’t recover this time . . . I am doing what seems the best thing to do . . . I can’t fight any longer . . . Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. A Day At Gurney’s

Before I dozed off in a chair in the “Quiet Room” downstairs at Gurney’s Sea Water Spa, Margarita, a 30-year massage veteran, greeted me, ever so gently and with orangeinfused tea in hand, for my first ever seawater hydrotherapy massage. Sitting in my own, personal Roman bath filled with filtered salt water, it started to bubble while Margarita ran a powerful hose across every inch of my skin. “This is so good for your circulation and the salt water provides your body with lots of minerals, “Margarita explained, as I was nearly dozing off . . . again. About twenty minutes later, after my body was Jell-O-like, Margarita handed me a warm, plush, sea foam green robe, grabbed my tea and escorted me next door for the second part of my treatment: a sea salt massage with warm lavender oil. Afterward, Margarita offered me the choice of a regular shower or a Swiss shower. Feeling a bit adventurous, I opted for the Swiss shower, where dozens of small jets aimed at every area of the body shot out powerful streams of hot water, leaving my skin feeling clean and tingly. These are some of the dozens of treatments available at the Montaukbased house of luxury year round. Now that it’s a new year, ‘tis the season for many to put down the donuts, get rid of the soda and focus on a fitter, healthier self. And Gurney’s is a perfect place to make all those dreams and hopes come true. The fitness center, nestled toward the back of the Sea Water Spa at the resort runs from 7 AM to 8 PM seven days a week, 365 days a year. Classes begin at 8:10 AM and include everything from Zumba and spinning to water aerobics and Pilates. The
fitness center’s equipment is top notch, with multiples of everything and a stellar ocean view. And for those who don’t usually work out, Gurney’s offers incentives that will be sure to change some minds. For this month, a membership special includes a free month added to every six months of membership (after the initial purchase of a six or 12 month membership) and a special of unlimited classes for $50 during January. There are also reasonable deals on personal training sessions and 60 or 90-minute classes. “Here, we’re focused on educating people on thalasso therapies and treatments,” said Candice Monte, director of the

Wild And Fit In Montauk

Most people don’t think “wild,” when they think of former East Hampton Town Councilwoman Julia Prince. Most do, however, think “fit.”
So it’s no surprise she’s parlayed her love of staying trim and her love of Montauk into a unique service called Wild Woman Fitness. WWF is an outdoor boot camp style class that uses interval training . . . and the environment. “If you just get in touch with nature, there’s a gym wherever you go,” she explained last week, demonstrating moves at Ed Ecker Park on Navy Road. The pier is perfect for sprints, boulders and rocks are used as kettle bells or weights, a picnic table is used for plank core moves and step-ups. Ar ticulating the philosophy behind outdoor boot camp, Prince said, “Generally people join a gym and end up defeating themselves because it gets so painful to be indoors when it’s a beautiful day. The only real way to be happy in fitness is to change your lifestyle so

you do it forever.” Prince will work out of space at local studios, when the weather is bad, but this winter she and her students have been able to exercise al fresco often. She picks the day’s locale based on weather and wind direction, then posts details on the Montauk Wild Woman Fitness Facebook page. Last Wednesday, it was the Navy Road beach. The temperature cooperated and it was a still clear day. Looking across scenic Fort Pond Bay Prince asked, “Wouldn’t you rather be doing your squats here?” Classes are only 40 minutes long, but Prince makes them intense. Demonstrating one move that entails leaping into the air from a squat position, she reported, “I had my six pack back in six months after Hudson was born.” Prince will use anything she finds on forays to local beaches to assist in CONTINUED ON PAGE B-15.

Winter: Time To Get In Shape By Miles X. Logan
Everyone knows the East End is a summer paradise. Guess what? The winter is the prettiest time of the year. Not coincidentally, winter is the time traditionally used by sun worshippers to get it bathing suit/ bikini shape – here are some of the time-tested activities. Ice-Skating: It’s amazing to realize folks have been ice-skating for centuries on Lake Agawam (Southampton), East Hampton Town Pond, Ryder’s Pond in North Haven, and dozens of other beautiful waterways all over the East End. In fact, there have been times when much of the Peconic Bay froze – people could drive cars from Long Beach in Noyac to Shelter Island. Speaking of which, Shelter Island has been frozen-in many, many times, with neither ferry operating. During these extended freezing, ice-sailing is an amazing experience, and once was a popular pastime hereabouts. Mecox Pond or Shinnecock Bay are two great places to enjoy. Ice skating is the perfect cardiovascular workout, and a great way to get the legs in shape. Hint: it used to be a popular date activity,
and also a place where singles meet. If it’s too warm try the rink at Buckskill Winter Club, especially if hockey is your thing. Go Hiking: The beaches are truly beautiful this time of the year. The ocean beaches, because of erosion, are constantly shifting, revealing more and more surprises. Collecting beach glass has become a new fad. There’s no better way to lose pounds. Contrary to popular opinion the hiking trails are much more interesting during the winter. Lairs are revealed, it’s easier to sight brooks and streams, not to mention assorted creatures who inhabit the forest. Get yourself an insulated mug, pour in some soup or hot cocoa, and call one of the trails organizations and see for yourself. Join A Gym: Most of the local gyms offer sensational winter deals: Planet Fitness, Body Tech, the YMCA in East Hampton, B-East, Hampton Gym Corp, Evolution Fitness and many more. Daily rates may be available, but take the package deal and get in the habit of going regularly, at least three times a week. You may want to consider an on-site trainer to work on a particular area
of concern. Also a great way to meet new people. Play Tennis: Ice and snow on the ground? It’s always nice at East Hampton Indoor Tennis and rates, especially during the off-season, are surprisingly affordable. Yoga: Chakras need tweaking? Need a little ananda in your life? Crawl into your padmasana, go out on a anga, and even out your ujjayi. That’s right, folks, Yoga isn’t just for Ravi Shankar anymore. Yoga Shanti (Sag Harbor), KamaDeva (East Hampton), and Mandala (Amagansett) are but a few of the better studios, but also try your local public libraries –- most have classes at least once a week. Go To A Spa: Go ahead – pamper yourself. The Spa at East Wind in Wading River will treat you like a King or Queen (Or both in some cases!). Go for the whole package. Cynics might wonder why a person needs a class if all the tools and venues are so readily available. Prince admitted that she does train her students so they can do the workouts alone, but added, “It’s always more fun to do it with others.” Not to mention motivational. Prince challenges her students and crafts mini competitions for an extra push during classes. Also motivating? She doesn’t charge anything, and simply accepts donations with no amount suggested. Split Pea Soup Ingredients (serves 4) 1 lb green split peas 1c chopped onion 1 clove of garlic 1 bay leaf 1 ham hock 1 c chopped celery 1oz vegetable oil salt and pepper to taste
vegetable oil. Once they become slightly translucent add the ham hock, peas, bay leaf and two and a half quarts of water. Bring to a simmer and skim off the scum that rises to the top then simmer for one and a half hours stirring occasionally so that the peas don’t stick to the bottom. Once finished cooking remove the hock and the bay leaf and puree the soup in a blender. Remember if the soup gets too thick you can always add a little more water. www.chefjoecipro.com

Haywire * (R ) Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven) fashions a complex thriller, and expertly guides the viewer through a maze of plot twists. for his role as an idealistic political consultant who learns the ropes the hard way. George Clooney, the director, makes this film about personal ethics, and how compromised politicians, by definition, are. Clooney has attracted A-list actors, including himself, for supporting roles: Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Philip Seymour Hoffman among them.
Now Playing Joyful Noise (PG-13) The operative word here is “noise” – not from the music, but from the big mouths of Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, who ham their way through this turkey. The plot, if you insist, is about a choir in a small Southern town that’s beset with poverty. Church leaders hope to win a national “Joyful Noise” competition, but of course church leaders differ about how to do it. There’s a teenage romance thrown in, but basically this is a vehicle for two old vets to score a nice payday by giving their one dimensional fans what they want – one dimensional acting. Beauty And The Beast * (G) In 3-D, the Disney classic is even better than you remembered -- It’s enchanting, sweepingly romantic, and features plenty of wonderful musical numbers. If your kids haven’t seen it, find a 3-D theater and take them, and that goes for you and the entire family. The Iron Lady (PG-13) Meryl Streep, of course, nails the role of former Great Britain Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but an uninspired script keeps the film from ever really taking off. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (PG-13) We never did buy into Robert Downey Jr. playing the world’s smartest detective, just as we have trouble seeing him as a Super hero (re: Iron Man.) This is really just holiday season junk from Warner Brothers, a splashy, noisy action filled romp that offers little in substance.
