Anton Chekhov, 1860
Although he was a physician by trade, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is generally considered to be the greatest short story writer who ever lived. “Medicine is my lawful wife”, he once said, “and literature is my mistress.” Chekhov was born and raised in Southern Europe. His father, Pavel, the son of a serf, was a religious man but an abusive father. His mother, Yevgeniya, though her husband suppressed her high-spirits, had a vivid imagination and would entertain Anton and his five siblings with magical stories culled from her imagination. Eventually the family went bankrupt and had to flee to avoid debtor’s prison; Chekhov, forced to fend for himself, nevertheless attended university and entered medical school. He began writing as a way to supplement his income. Gradually, Chekhov worked his way up the ranks and received an offer to write for the largest newspaper in St. Petersburg. His first book, a collection of short stories, won the Pushkin Prize, the highest literary honor in Russia. The success prompted Chekhov to author his first play, Ivanov. Chekhov became somewhat wealthy from his writing, and devoted his medical practice to the poor, purchasing medications for them out of his own pocket. His next play, The Seagull, was roundly panned by critics and audiences alike. Eventually, in the hands of a gifted director, the many nuances and subtleties in the work made it an audience favorite at the Moscow Art Theatre. Though stricken with tuberculosis, Chekhov followed that play with three more masterpieces: Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. Like his short stories, the characters in Chekhov’s plays often resembled key people in his life – his domineering father, his beloved but unhappy mother, his siblings, and the many lovers he took – Chekhov was regarded as theatre’s most eligible bachelor before finally marrying late in life. New To Theaters Gimme Shelter (PG-13) Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) gets a starring vehicle - unfortunately, it’s a Ford Edsel. Supposedly based on a true story about a pregnant teenager living on the streets, it is cliché-driven, heavy handed, and hard to sit through. Some veteran actors, specifically James Earl Jones and Brendan Fraser, sleepwalk through their roles. It’s a clunker. Coming Soon The Monument Men (PG-13) Assorted museum curators and other assorted nerds are sent behind Nazi lines to rescue precious works of art in this film, supposedly based on a true story. George Clooney penned the screenplay, directs and
stars, and he has attracted a first rate cast including Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and Jean Dujardin. Originally pegged as an Oscar contender, the film’s release date was pushed back. There have been few screenings, meaning most critics haven’t seen it yet. That’s usually a bad sign. Still, Clooney has a history of delivering, so we’ll all know soon enough – Monument Men opens next week.

Tuckahoe School Tuckahoe’s eighth grade social studies students just finished the Stock Market game. Ben Taraku, Jordan Klinge, Julianna Farnam, and Brooke Llewellyn earned the highest returns. Profitable investments included Pandora and Google. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adults will be held on Mondays and Thursdays at 7 PM at Tuckahoe School. All are welcome! National Wear Red Day will be celebrated on February 7 in support of the 10th Annual American Heart Association’s awareness of women’s heart disease. A CPR course for our middle school students will be held on February 13 from 2:45 until 5 PM. in the Tuckahoe School Library. East Hampton Middle School The seventh and eighth grade chorus will serenade with songs of love at the Valentine Cabaret Show tomorrow at 7 PM in the Middle School auditorium. Tickets are $3 each. The 9th annual Mad Heart Ball will be held at the school on February 7, from 7 to 9 PM. This popular event features students who have taken dance classes and compete in pairs for prizes and medals. This event is open to families of the dancers, but not to the general public. John M. Marshall Elementary School A Valentine’s party for the twoto-six year old set will be held on Saturday at the Eleanor Whitmore E a r l y C h i l d h o o d C e n t e r. J i m Turner will be there with a musical performance at 11:30 AM. The Anti-Bullying Presentation by John Marshall’s counselors has been switched to Tuesday, Feruary 25, at 6:30 PM.

HarborFrost Arrives Next Week It’s that time of year again. HarborFrost is hittin’ Sag Harbor on February 7, with ice sculpting and fireworks in tow. Joining forces, the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce and the Sag Harbor Express present the fourth annual event, which has become a local favorite for both residents and visitors alike. The Frost Ball kicks off the weekend, with a party at Muse in the Harbor from 6 to 10 PM Friday night. Guests can enjoy all you can eat hors d’oeuvres, open bar, and a DJ. $65 for chamber members, $75 for non-members. For tickets and more info call 631-918-3097. Saturday, February 8, features daylong fun with ice carving, fire dancers, and fireworks by Grucci on Long Wharf. Main Street will be full of special sales, live music, restaurant specials and other culinary delights. For those brave enough to face frigid waters for a good cause, a “frosty” plunge to benefit the Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Pierson High School Theater and Arts is scheduled at Windmill Beach. Later on celebrate the Beatles at Bay Street Theatre, as East End musicians play songs by the Fab Four. Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 the day of. Tickets include a glass of house wine and the show starts at 8 PM. The weekend rounds out with a pancake breakfast benefiting the Sag Harbor Junior Fire Department on Sunday, February 9. Springs School News The Journalism Club has expanded every week, with 25 students participating in this afterschool activity. Guided by Sue Ellen O’Connor and Amy Turner, students write articles which are then submitted to local newspapers for publication. So far Marissa Harry and Madison Lappin have made the 1000 Word Club. Coached by Ana Jacobs, the girls’ volleyball team ended on a winning note, winning eight of their nine games. The top servers were Ashley Rea, Nicole Realmuto, Carolina Ortega and Sophia Ledda, with spiking strength from Isabella Aguero and Maddie Schenck. Students in Katherine Farmer’s eighth grade social studies classes have completed projects on the Industrial Revolution with cardboard prototypes, ranging from Edison’s home phonograph and Ford’s Model T to early cameras and typewriters, on display in the school library. As part of their business letter writing unit seventh graders wrote to over 70 celebrities, including popular athletes, writers, and entertainers. High Tide, the school’s literary magazine, will publish a range of genres across the curriculum and grades. Tracey Frazier and Ryan Scala are collecting submissions with the help of art teacher Colleen McGowan, student artwork will also be highlighted. The Courtyard Club may be dormant in the winter months, but the birds still need to eat. The students raise money for the birdseed by maintaining a water machine at school. Wild Bird Crossing provides a discount on the birdseed and the students break the ice in the water bath for their “regular customers.” The students in classrooms around the courtyard have the opportunity to continue bird watching all year. First graders have been studying air and weather in Sean Knight’s science classes, using simple meteorological instruments to observe and monitor change, including parachutes, pinwheels, and kites to observe the action of wind. In addition they have used weather instruments such as a thermometer, anemometer and wind vane to graph their observations of local weather conditions. The student art show at Guild Hall will run through February. Colleen McGowan has displayed

Method Pre-heat your oven to 425. In a small bowl add all dry ingredients for the chicken to make your spice rub. Now in a large mixing bowl add the chicken and all the wet ingredients. Mix well and when all the chicken has been evenly coated add half the spice rub. Mix one more time and then evenly lay the chicken pieces out on a sheet pan
