PLANT & SING Over Columbus Day Weekend the “Plant & Sing Festival” took place at Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island. The weekend celebration of American roots in music, food and literature was a big hit. The event was held to benefit the Sylvester Manor's non-profit educational farm, whose mission is to cultivate, preserve, and share the Manor's land, buildings, and stories -- inviting new thought about the importance of food and culture in our daily lives. The weekends festivities kicked-off with a traditional contradance, garlic shuck and sing. There was music all weekend by the likes of Dune Grass, Mia and Mia, Sun Parade, Anais Mitchell, Caroline Doctorow, Who Dat Loungers, Straight Drive, and many others. Also included in the weekend celebration was a staged reading of "Men's Lives" by Mac Griswold, Bryan Futerman, Kathy Engel, Brad Davis, Scott and Megan Chaskey, Christian McLean, Jonathan Brandeis, and Bill Persky. Fantastic food was provided by Taste of North Fork, Vine Street Cafe, Greeny's, and the Hayground Pizza Tractor.
I joined in on Sunday afternoon for the conclusion of the event, a performance by siblings Rufus & Martha Wainwright. Closing their performance was special guest (and father of the duo) folksinger Loudon Wainwright III. The family of supremely talented musicians made this abnormally sunny summer day in October feel like a festive night in July. To our left, the world’s most attractive couple, Ed Burns and Christy Turlington, enjoyed the entertainment with their children. To the right, local food vendors served their best cuisine. The crowd sported flowers in their hair while indulging in a not-so-endless supply of Bedell Celars wine, which had been cleaned out by the time we got there. That's what we get for being late! Overall, a fantastic evening on Shelter Island. We look forward to more planting and more singing at Sylvester Manor in the future! Today’s Birthday: Bode Miller, 1977 America’s resident Bad Boy alpine ski racer once quit the team rather than succumb to pressure from U.S. Olympic officials to conform. His transgressions included living in his own trailer rather than the Olympics Village with his teammates and drinking beer and staying out late before his events. At the 2010 Olympics, after re-joining the team, Miller won a gold medal (super combined), a silver (Super G) and a bronze (downhill) in Vancouver 2010. Miller is a two-time overall World Cup champion and is generally considered the greatest American alpine skier of all time.
by Asher Lee ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) You really must speak up. Time for you to offer your opinions and insights in any situation in which you find yourself. It is surprising that you become uncomfortable with opinionated people and train yourself to hold your tongue. Your natural state is to offer up your opinions, so even if you have trained yourself to resist your natural urge, now is the time for you to speak up. You may find that people have been waiting for your ideas and that your perspective holds the key to a solution. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) I know you can do just about anything; it is one of the many wonders of being you. There does come a time when we need to narrow down our choices and get a bit more focused on what we really, really want to do. When we give ourselves permission to do “anything,” we run the risk of ultimately doing nothing. Know your boundaries and limitations and narrow down your choices. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Magic is when things are going along normally and you meet someone and they introduce you to someone else and then your whole life changes. Regardless of what may seem to be happening right now in your life, don’t sell yourself short or limit the possibilities by forgetting that magic happens. Stay connected to what you know you want in your life and allow the Universe to figure out how to make it happen. You don’t need to know how things will happen, you simply need to remember that things can change within any moment. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) What do you believe? I know that you are often all caught up in living your life and taking care of things for yourself and everyone else, but sometimes we all need to take a break and think a little while about what we truly believe. It won’t be a waste of time, for we all have to live from what we truly believe and we need to be sure of what that is. Remember the higher values behind all the things you are doing and you will have an easier time taking care of the mundane. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) You do have the ability to get yourself into quite a funk. Your sign is so fun and full of life, it’s surprising that you can so easily go into the glum and mopey place. You need to learn that your moods are directly connected to your thoughts. If you have been thinking about everything that there is to be afraid or worried about, no wonder you’re in a bad mood. Change your mind and you will change your feelings. It is as simple as that. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Make a list, a list of the most important things in your life. If you can set good priorities, you will find that it becomes easier to make choices and decisions because your priorities are clear in you mind. If you forget your priorities, it could take you days or weeks even to make the simplest choice. Make that list and then, keeping it in mind, reevaluate your choices. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) How well do you think you know yourself? Have you taken time out recently to check in with yourself to make sure you are aware of who you are NOW? Sometimes we make deals with ourselves and then years later we are simply in
the habit of believing we are a certain way. We forget that we change and that our desires and dreams and needs change as time moves on. See if there are any deals you have made with yourself that it’s time to renegotiate. See if you can stretch yourself and allow yourself to experience something you never have before. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Great week to take a bit of a break and rest a little. You may want to contemplate what it means to truly be in “negotiation.” A true negotiation means the outcome needs to be flexible and compromise is part of the deal. Your requirements within a negotiation are to show up, pay attention, tell the truth and don’t be attached to the outcome. These are known as the four rules of negotiation. Learn them and use them, frequently. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) One step at a time. Remember that tortoise and hare story. Slow and steady really does win the race. Don’t believe you are behind where you need to be or that it is important that you get in gear and hurry things up in your life. You are right on schedule and doing things a little bit at a time really will bring you where you want to be. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) If you really look you will see that you have everything you need to be truly happy right here, right now. There is not one more teeny little thing you need to capture happiness right now. You are so geared to constantly scanning your life for problems to fix that you miss many opportunities to really experience happiness. Take the time right now to see how far you have come and how much you do have and how good your life actually is. Allow yourself to be happy! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Time to start getting good at having some faith. If you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel it may be because you need to develop true faith. If we always know what is going to happen, we wouldn’t need faith at all. Even if you can’t see how things will turn out, are you courageous enough to trust that things will work out okay? Look within for the inner resources to take a leap of faith -- even if you have no guarantees. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Lets talk about worry. It comes in many different shapes and sizes and expresses itself in a lot of different ways. But one thing that is always true about worry is that it is a complete waste of energy. It does not help us in any way, shape, or form, and it never changes the outcome of anything. We train ourselves to worry, or our family trains us and then we just keep going along. Break the cycle of worry by catching yourself in the midst of it and make a conscious choice to think about something else. Break the chain! NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Asher Lee is a professional Astrologer and Tarot reader. Coming Soon Footloose (PG-13) The remake of the 1984 classic has all the earmarks of a mega-hit. Newcomers Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough take on the Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer roles, and director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) delivers a fresh, new approach. The basic plot is the same, at least on paper: Ren comes to small southern town from Boston, only to learn teens are not allowed to party-hearty. Pretty soon, Ren finds a pretty girl named Ariel who just happens to be the preacher’s daughter. Pretty soon, loud music and wild dancing ensues. It’s energetic, the music rocks, and the kids dance their arses off. Go see it. The Woman ( R) Sometimes ya need guts and gore when the winter looms and the nights turn cold and dreary. This should do ya – a woman living in the woods, named Pollyanna, oddly enough, has a few surprises in store for a nearby family – and they are not pleasant.
Fast Five A former cop and an ex-con partner team up to raise holy hell, kick tail, drive fast, and piss off numerous people who want them dead. Vin Deisel and, of course, Dwayne Johnson are in the middle of the mayhem. Also starring Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Matt Schulze, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Tego Calderon and Don Omar for the ultimate high-stakes race. GAME DORK
by doug elfman
You Want ‘Rage?’ Will 2011 ever get better? L ook at th i s d i s a p po i nt i ng blockbuster, “Rage.” It should be a spectacular, first-person shooter. It’s made by id Software, creators of the classic “Doom” and “Quake” series. “Rage” is so big, it comes on three discs if you play it on Xbox 360. And yet, “Rage” is often just a dull irritation. Plot: In the year 2029, meteorites mess up Earth. Not many humans survive, but you do. Everywhere you journey, mutant humans roam murderously, in killer-zombie mode. So you must shoot these mutants, as well as roving gangs of thugs, in a post-apocalyptic wasteland that vaguely resembles the American Old West, decorated with saloons and desert towns. Plenty of characters in “Rage” talk to you about missions to accomplish, or they merely tell you to buzz off. But their dialogue lines and stories are negligible, so let’s skip them and discuss the gist of the whole game:
To run around and shoot mutants, or bash them in the head with the butt of your rifle, shotgun or handgun. The violent action could be swell if it were more fun and effective. But for too much of “Rage,” the action isn’t compelling or convincing. It’s not terrible. It’s just blah-averagewhatever. Since this is a shooting game, you’d hope the guns would be great. No-o-ope. My weapons, and especially hand-to-hand melees, feel imprecise, weak and low-on-ammo against mutants and villainous bosses. The bad: Many times, characters will talk to me, but their lips are not even close to matching the dialogue. Worse: A lot of action sights and sounds don’t match up. Someone will shoot at me, but I won’t hear the blast until bullets are entering my face. That’s too late. Worst: Did the game makers decide not to include an auto-save feature? I pause the game every
ANNUAL FALL SPECIALS

few minutes, open the menu, open the “save” function, click “save,” tell my Xbox 360 to overwrite previous save data, then click out of all those options. I do that manually every five to 10 minutes. If I don’t, I can lose an hour’s worth of progress due to one sloppy death. I know this, because I did so the first day I played “Rage.” I was very, very angry. I’m giving “Rage” two out of four stars, because the game is just pretty enough, just big enough, and just good enough to merit being called “mediocre” rather than “bad.” But that doesn’t mean I like the idiot villains who jump around as if they were in Cirque du Soleil, dodging my limp bullets. I absolutely abhor the unsatisfying headshots. Typically in games, when
you shoot someone in the face, they die. Why can’t you do this better, “Rage?” Oh, and the dune buggy-racing portions of “Rage” are tiresome. But now I’m just being jerky about every pedestrian element of the game, sorry. (“Rage” by Bethesda retails for $60 for Xbox 360, PS 3 and PC — Plays dull. Looks very good. Challenging. Rated “M” for blood, gore, intense violence and strong language. Two out of four stars.) Doug Elfman is an award-winning entertainment columnist who lives in Las Vegas. Miscellaneous PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein, you are my mother. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee(3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goals. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person, must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. after 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. My prayers were answered. Thank you so very much. As requested by J.L. 48-40-35
