Jerusalem Maiden is a beautifully told story that takes place during the last years of the Ottoman Empire in the Holy City of Jerusalem. Main character, Esther Kaminsky, struggles with her beliefs and obligations to her family while she is drawn to her artistic ability, which is forbidden in her strict Orthodox Jewish community. A French teacher at her school gives her the supplies and a safe place to paint, while her impoverished family struggles for their lives during hard times. Esther is portrayed in such a light that the reader is brought back to the early 1900’s, struggling with the same hardships. You will not want to put the book down. You feel the character’s dilemma as she fights to stall her arranged marriage, which is expected of her as a young teen. This captivating story is one everyone should read. Will Esther follow her heart and talent, or do what is expected of her in her community? Author Talia Carner of Bridgehampton is a great story teller. She is the former publisher of Savvy Woman Magazine and a lecturer at international women’s economic forums. She was inspired by her grandmother’s untapped artistic genius that could never bloom in the confinement of her society.

The Artist (PG-13) A silent screen star circa 1927 realizes that the coming “talkies” will end his career; meanwhile, a young extra dreams of stardom. This Weinstein offering, certainly outside-the-box, is an example of a production company taking chances and succeeding – the film is a wonderment, where-in actors shine, lighting and customers rule, and there isn’t a special effect or 3-D frame in sight. A terrific, must-

see film. A Dangerous Method (R) Sony is hoping to generate some Oscar buzz for this film, a vehicle for Keira Knightley, playing a troubled women under the care of two of the world’s greatest shrinks – Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen).

New on DVD West Side Story 50th Anniversary Edition [Blu-ray] Starring Natalie Wood, George Chakiris, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno et al, is probably the best musical ever brought to the silver screen, and swept the Oscars in 1961. The score, by Leonard Bernstein, and the lyrics, by Stephen Sondheim, are unforgettable. The storyline, straight from Romeo and Juliet, takes place on the streets of New York City and focuses on tensions between white and Latino gangs, a theme that still resonates today. The choreography, by Jerome Robbins, is a blue print for modern dance as it exists today. The much-praised box-office blockbuster for United Artists received 11 Academy Award nominations and won all but one - Best Adapted Screenplay. Its achievement as a 10 Oscar winner has only been surpassed by three films (all with 11 Oscars): Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997), and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003). West Side Story’s Oscar awards include: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Actress (Chakiris in his first major film role and Moreno), Best Color Cinematography, Best Color Art Direction/Set Decoration, Best Sound, Best Scoring of a Musical Picture, Best Film Editing, and Best Color Costume Design. Robbins was also awarded a special statuette for “his brilliant achievements in the art of choreography on film.” Robbins was the only Best Director Oscar winner to win for the only film he ever directed. Wood was not nominated for West Side Story, but she was competing for a Best Actress Oscar (that she lost to Sophia Loren for Two Women) for her role in Splendor in the Grass (1961).

November 23, 2011 B-9

Today’s Birthday: Harpo Marx, 1888 by Asher Lee

Week of November 24, 2011 ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) This is the perfect week to join forces with someone you love and allow them to help you accomplish long overdue chores. Team work is the key. Spending time with people you love and knowing when to ask for help is a priority. Allow others to love you by receiving. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Peace of mind is the goal. Take your time and breathe and allow your choices to be defined by what will enhance your peace of mind. You can have peace right now if you want, just choose to look at things differently or choose to look at different things. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Check in with your body this week. Pay attention to what your body needs right now and define eating right by being aware of what your body needs at any given moment, rather than by what others tell you is right. You may be craving weird things and your body may indeed need them. Tune in. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Change is in the air so open yourself to all the possibilities. Think of this time as when a snake gets too big for its skin and it becomes necessary to slough off the old. Allow yourself to break free from old patterns and/or old relationships that just don’t work anymore. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) So it may be true that some events of late have been scary. It’s a volatile time. However, don’t allow your fear response to get so big that you become inert. Most of your fears are probably made up in your mind, so choose the bolder path and beat your fears into a manageable size. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) It is important right now that you balance your time well. Balance times of doing and doing with times of just being. If you take charge of this need for balance, the Universe will not have to intervene and make things difficult. This is a time to balance movement and change, so take charge of the energy. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) This is a time for the truth. No embellishing or stretching some of the truth. The rose colored glasses do need to come off for those around you and perhaps for yourself. Take action when your heart, mind and spirit are aligned, for this will be a sure way to know what is yours to do. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) The energy this week is ideal for completing old projects and getting your ducks in a row so to speak. There is the potential

for a great deal of change in the coming weeks, so by putting things in order now it will allow for much less chaos in the future. Think completion and finish up the old stuff. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) It may have been easy in the last few days or weeks to bounce yourself out of the creative flow of your life. Do your best right now to get back in that flow. Feel the energy and follow it - that is how you can be in the flow. Take time from all you ‘have’ to do and do some things you are moved to do. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Remaining neutral and waiting to see how things come out in the end will save you a good deal of time and angst this week. Do your best not to rush to judgment about yourself or another or even a situation. You will need to wait and see rather than, in your quest for efficiency, try to figure out the end ahead of time. Relax. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Flexibility is this week’s word. Allowing yourself to go with the flow rather than resisting the momentum, or forcing your will upon a situation, will bring surprising rewards and/or opportunities. Patience may be required, but you can do it. It is worth the effort. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) You can worry if you want, but it will not change a single thing. Time to take charge and have a difficult conversation or it may just be time to break the patterns of worry in your life. Try to stay in the present rather than going into the future where it seems so scary. It’s called being here now, so be here now. NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Asher Lee is a professional Astrologer and Tarot reader. During the 30s and 40s the Marx Brothers were among the top comedy acts – and film stars – in the country. Harpo, originally named Adolph, joined two of his brothers, Julius, and Gummo, to form a comedy act in 1910. Julius became better know as Groucho, and a fourth brother, Chico, came aboard. Harpo never spoke a word on screen, but it was a persona he created – in real life he could speak perfectly. He was known for his musical dexterity – he had a way with musical instruments, and played the piano live during the group’s early years even though he was just beginning to learn how to play. His mother Minnie sent him an old harp, and though outof-tune, Harpo made such beautiful music he astounded even professional musicians. A man of many talents, Harpo was an expert croquet player and was inducted to the game’s National Hall of Fame. He retired in 1964, and when he did he made a lengthy speech on stage – the first time many people had heard him talk. He died six months later – Groucho cried at the funeral, the only timeIndependentAdSEPT11_18.pdf he has ever done so, 9/7/11 family 2:24:25 members remarked. Method First peel the butternut squash, remove the seeds and chop into

1-inch cubes. Then in a large stockpot add the squash, the raisins, and the water and cook on high heat for 30 minutes. When the squash and raisins are finished cooking use the blender to liquefy the soup adding the honey, maple syrup, salt, and heavy cream during the blending process. Buoy One Restaurant & Bar

Independent/Jessica Mackin

Buoy One Restaurant & Bar in Westhampton can be described as simple and fresh. The food is spectacular and the atmosphere is welcoming. The seafood restaurant ser ves only the best and their customers are loyal. Chef David Girard and wife Lorraine make this family business a memorable dining experience, creating every dish with love. We started with a variety of appetizers. You can’t go wrong with anything from the raw bar. The seafood is delivered fresh every day. The stuffed oysters with a warm delicious seafood stuffing, are a specialty item on the menu and should not be missed. The duck spring rolls are also an excellent choice. The clam bake dish is one for the books, it includes a 2lb lobster, streamers, muscles, peel and eat shrimp, corn and baked potato. The Thai glazed codfish served with jasmine rice and sauteed spinach was prepared perfectly with just the right amount of spice. The crispy almond crusted flounder with

whipped vanilla sweet potatoes and broccoli couldn’t have tasted better. For dessert the warm chocolate souffle was devoured, even after the many courses prior to dessert. It was just too good! All Buoy One’s desserts are homemade so don’t go home without trying one. Thursday night Buoy One offers a seven course seafood meal served family style for $39 per person. Write a good review of Buoy One on YELP, print it out, and they will give you a complementary “Bouy One Seafood Basket” with fried filet, shrimp, scallops, clam strips, Idaho fries and cole slaw. Buoy One also has a location in Riverhead. Miscellaneous PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein, you are my mother. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee(3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goals. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person, must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. after 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. My prayers were answered. Thank you so very much. As requested by J.L. 48-40-35

GAME DORK

by doug elfman

A Silly Gangster Satire The makers of “Saints Row: The Third” claim their game is “over the top.” Listen, most shooters are over the top. This satire of “Grand Theft Auto” is way beyond that. It’s hyperbole turned in on itself. In this open-world game, I jump off a building as tall as Chicago’s Sears Tower — as a fully naked woman — then parachute into a swimming pool on a roof during a swanky VIP party, and kill everyone at the party. I swing a giant adult toy to beat up prostitutes, pimps and zombies

EA

roaming city streets. I command tanks to blow up cop cars. I call in air strikes on rival gangs hanging around basketball courts. Let me remind you, this is not a war game. It’s a gangster game with tanks and armed hover jets. It was crafty of the game’s designers at Volition, Inc. (on behalf of THQ), to do this — to mock the “GTA” format, because that format is old and tired. To wit, the last “Grand Theft Auto IV” by Rockstar Games took itself so seriously, it deteriorated into an

earnest slog about a carjacker taking a girl on a date — literally. In “The Third,” you portray a rich and famous gang member in an America that now values gangsters the way it overvalues Kardashians, as empty-calorie celebrities.

Ordinary pedestrians cheer you on, even though you rob banks and kill them. This is a ripe idea for modern parody, and it’s pitch perfect in its silliness. If you object philosophically, blame Martin Scorsese for elevating the criminal sociopath to the status of sympathetic anti-hero for four decades. That’s right, I’m saying the juvenile and ultra-violent “Saints Row: The Third” is the logical conclusion of Scorsese and “The Sopranos.” Deal with it. And yet, this parody takes a cartoon form so lacking in gravity, no rational soul who plays it could accuse it of being sexist or reprehensible. Because, it’s just the dumbest thing — in a good way, like a Three Stooges sketch. Valid criticisms? I’ve got one. Since it’s vapid moment to moment, it is a sleek machine but emotionally hollow. Going into the game, just know you’re digging yourself into a shallow grave. Practically speaking, “The Third” begins easily but becomes quite difficult after some hours. Missions require killing scores of rival gangsters and cops without dying. You can play the solo campaign or a cooperative mode. There’s a “Whored Mode,” styled after “Call of Duty’s” hoard mode. Don’t blame me. That’s what it’s called. “Whored Mode” sees you killing wave after wave of prostitutes and zombies, on a timer, while armed with shotguns, rocket launchers and a violet adult toy. I could do without that four-footlong purple weapon. It’s nasty. (“Saints Row: The Third” by THQ retails for $60 for PS 3 and Xbox 360; $50 for PC — Plays fun. Looks good. Challenging. Rated “M” for blood, gore, drug reference, intense violence, partial nudity, strong language and sexual content. Three and one-half out of four stars.)
