My Birthday Donation My birthday is just around the corner (May 27 to be exact) and this year I’ve decided to donate it to charity: water. Instead of my friends (and generous Indy readers) giving me gifts, I would much rather people donate to charity: water and give clean water to people who need it. 100 percent of every dollar you donate to my birthday campaign will be used to build clean water projects in developing countries. Every day, 5,000 kids die from water-related illnesses before they reach their fifth birthday. But it doesn't have to be that way. There
are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world. I have set up a campaign site www.mycharitywater.org/ hamptondaze with a suggested donation of $21 representing the age I act, and $30 representing the age I'm actually turning. Eek! My goal is to raise $500, which will provide clean water for 7 people. Help me make this birthday my best ever!

mediocre Bloody Mary is good but a great Bloody Mary sticks in your memory for years. The Bloody Mary is all about the mix. Use a substandard mix and you’ll have a rather forgettable cocktail despite the use of even the best Vodka. Speaking of Vodka… BevX recommends using a quality, and sensibly priced Vodka. There is no better way to spot a status seeking fool than to witness someone at the bar ordering a Bloody Mary with the addition of the posh, ultra-premium Vodka of the moment. Ingredients 2 oz Vodka BevX Best Bloody Mary Mix (see recipe above) Ice Celery & citrus slice for garnish Salt, celery seed, and black pepper for glass rim BevX Best Bloody Mary Mix 32 oz quality tomato juice Juice of one lime
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce 2 tablespoons Juice from your dill pickle jar (not sweet pickles!)
2 teaspoons ancho chile powder 1 teaspoon chipotle powder 1 teaspoon honey 3/4 teaspoon celery salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Combine all ingredients and stir vigorously, or better yet, shake vigorously. Method: Rim a tall highball glass with salt, celery seed, and black pepper by first wetting the glass with a lime wedge. Fill the glass with ice and then add the Vodka followed by the mix. Add the garnish and enjoy.

Quogue Library Gallery “Without Words - Paintings and Collage,” features works by Marion Jones. She received her fine arts degree at University of Colorado and spent the first part of her career teaching art, as an assistant art director
at McGraw Hill and as a freelance illustrator. In 2009 Jones had surgery for a brain tumor, which left her with diminished language abilities and memory function. When finding words became difficult, painting became her way to express emotion. She was surprised by the kind of art that she began producing, remarking that it showed new energy, colors, and depth. Her style evolved from traditional landscapes to abstract works and collage. There will be an artist reception Saturday from 2:30 to 4:30 PM in the Quogue Library Gallery. The exhibit will be shown through May 30. For information call 631-653-4224 ext. 3.

Frances Ha (R ) Greta Gerwig rules as a hapless ditz making the rounds in Manhattan, and director Noah Baumbach, (The Squid And The Whale) moves things along with a deft hand. It’s a quirky Allenesque movie that’s sweet and funny.
New To Theaters Star Trek Into Darkness (PG13) The whole crew is back – the NEW crew, that is: Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy among them. Silver Linings Playbook Director David O. Russell (The Fighter) is at his best revealing the quirky side of neurotic families. In this offbeat romantic comedy, loosely based on the Matthew Quick novel, a troubled son (Bradley Cooper) returns to live with his parents (Robert DeNiro, Jacki Weaver) after a stint in a mental hospital, determined to rebuild his life. Then a mysterious girl muddles the waters even further. The film becomes yet another star vehicle for Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games, Winter’s Bone) who proceeds to steal the show. This was probably the best movie of the year, but it might have been even better if not for the slightly schlocky ending. Lawrence walked away with the Best Actress Oscar, and deservedly so.

and enjoy those around you. Do remember to take some time for yourself as well so you don’t get burnt out. Enjoy this spring energy.

Today’s Birthday: L. Frank Baum, 1856 Lyman Frank Baum was a quiet, shy child, one of nine raised by Ann (Stanton) and Benjamin Ward Baum in the small town of Chittenango, New York. Blessed with a vivid imagination, Baum began writing as a boy and by the time he was a teenager was publishing a makeshift newspaper printed on a small press his father had purchased for him. Baum was sent off to military school at the age of 14, an experience he spoke of with dread for most of his life. He returned home two years later and began to write in earnest. Curiously, history may have overlooked Baum if not for one event – nevertheless, he was a true visionary, a fantasy/science fiction writer before those genres really even existed. He produced books, plays and essays at an astounding rate: unfortunately, his fascination with the theater – he also composed music for his works - almost proved his undoing. Baum pumped his money into one production after another, only to see the plays close in obscurity. Baum envisioned laptop computers, wireless phones, and television years before they existed, yet success eluded him – until he teamed with the noted illustrator W.W. Denslow to produce and publish a book in 1900 based on the most improbable turn of events. He called it The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz. The book was a smash hit, and Baum ended up writing numerous sequels to it. He died in 1919 – 20 years before the movie of the same name assured him a perch atop the list of the world’s great fantasy writers. ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Time to set some practical and realistic goals. Great week to just get things done and ignore the underlying anxiety. Make lists and follow through. It’s the best you can do right now.
While you may not actually want to end up in the spotlight, or out in front of things, this week may change that up. Embrace the leadership role, it may be fun!
TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) You may meet some interesting people and have a chance for lovely socializing time. Reach out and accept those invitations. Meeting new people now may make for interesting times in the future.
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Feelings, ideas and goals all converge this week, and you may find yourself accomplishing more than you thought. Enjoy the moment and know you can handle situations that require a great deal from you. You are powerful -- remember this.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) The energy is moving a bit fast right now, just the way you like it! Your intuition may be more challenging to understand at this moment, so investigate your feelings more thoroughly and then just keep on talking.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Partnership matters, while they may be a bit confusing could actually lead to moving beyond long standing resistance this week. Make the effort to sort through all the weird stuff, it will be worth it. Remember to trust your gut.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) This may be a week to take bold action.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Very social time right now, so reach out

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Change is in the air and as you watch the plants and trees around you change and mature, use this imagery as a metaphor for where your life is right now. This time may be the greatest opportunity for sustained change in the directions you want to move, more so than at any other time in your life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Everyone starts to catch up to you this week. You have been ahead of the curve for a little while and others may have felt out of step with you and it has been true. So know that things are catching up, you may find things falling into place. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) A little bit of a break in the heavy, deep, and real energy of late. Enjoy this and take a break if you can or set yourself to checking things off your list of things to do if you prefer. Often for you checking things off your list is like a vacation!
IN THE NEWS
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Don’t be afraid of the deeper places you are going these days. It is time to look deeper and inspire yourself to do things differently. It is not about judging yourself; it IS about making different choices. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) It may be a better time to just get things done rather than ponder the bigger things in the Universe. It will most likely be more satisfying if you just putter around and accomplish small tasks rather than worry about the bigger things, just for now.
