Louis Begley To Speak At Amagansett Library By Miles X. Logan
Louis Begley is one of the country’s most renowned authors, especially after his novel About Schmidt was turned into an Oscar nominated film starring Jack Nicholson. But Begley led a storied life before he even began his career as a writer. He was born in Poland as Ludwik Begleiter, and it was amazing good fortune he ever got out alive – most Polish Jews were murdered by Nazis. His family made its way to Paris and then New York. He attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn and studied literature at Harvard, graduated with honors, and joined the US Army. Begley then pursued a career; not
in writing, but in law. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and worked many years – eventually becoming a partner -- for a prestigious firm, specializing in international law. His first book, Wartime Lies, is a thinly-veiled autobiography about an upper middle class Jewish family stuck in Poland during the Nazi occupation. In 1996 About Schmidt was published to rave reviews. Schmidt, recently widowed, is floundering, searching for some semblance of a life without knowing where to look for it. The title character is given a multi-layered, emotionless personality. The genius of Begley is that he allows the reader

to break through the players and begin to understand the man inside the character. One reviewer raved, “Mr. Begley is too fastidious to make Schmidt likable, as though to elicit sympathy for him would then be too easy. How much greater the literar y accomplishment to make us pity, understand, even identify with someone we have permission to write off.” Saturday Begley will be appearing at the Amagansett Library for the first of its Saturday evening “Authors After Hours” series. Begley will discuss his newest book, Schmidt Steps Back, the third in his series of books about the character, Albert Schmidt. Begley will also discuss the evolution of Schmidt through About Schmidt, Schmidt Delivered, and Schmidt Steps Back. In this installment the title
H
character is preparing for a visit from the irresistible Alice Verplanck, widow of his former law partner and possibly, a more appropriate romantic prospect for a man now 78. Alice demands that he think long and hard about their complicated past, and while he’s at it, Schmidt finds himself also reviewing the reversals and tragedies that have brought him to an unimagined isolation and loneliness. Schmidt sees in Alice’s impending visit his last chance, before the sun sets on the Hamptons, for a life that is more than merely staying alive. Begley is a National Book Award Finalist, National Book Critics’ Circle Finalist, and has earned the PEN/ Ernest Hemingway Foundation Award, among numerous other honors bestowed on him. Begley will be at the library at 6 PM; for more information call 631-

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Maria Langiulli
New On DVD
Coming Soon 21 Jump Street (R) Jonah Hill (Moneyball) and Channing Tatum (The Vow) ham it up as two cops who are sent undercover back to high school to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring. They find time to revisit the angst and social pressure they thought they left behind. Phil Lord (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) co-directs. Hill gets a writing credit. It could have been funnier, but it has its moments.
Now Playing The Imposter * Critics are raving about this documentary about the 1994 disappearance of a 13 yearold in Texas. The director Bart Layton, in his first effort, deftly lays out a series of occurrences even Hollywood’s greatest scriptwriters would have trouble coming up with. And it’s all true. This film may not make it to the East End, but it is worth a trip to Manhattan if it doesn’t.
New To Theaters
The Collaborator (NR) Martin Donovan wrote, directed, and stars in this film, billed as a comedy about a screenwriter on the skids. It’s not really funny, but critics seem to like it. On the other hand, audiences haven’t. Be forewarned. Co-starring David Morse, Olivia Williams, and Katherine Helmond.
The Amazing Spider Man (PG13) Again? Yep. This time with a new director (Marc Webb) and a new cast. But Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as Peter brings some chops to the role. Unlike Tobey Maquire, a somewhat nerdy Spiderman whose overly innocent look seldom left his face, Garfield has a chip on his shoulder -- he’s something of a rebel, and Emma Stone (The Help) is perfect as Gwen. It’s slick summer fare to be sure, but it’s edgy enough to distinguish itself from the original. Martin Sheen, Dennis Leary and Sally Field anchor an excellent supporting cast. The Pact (NR) Nicholas McCarthy’s first film has a tired premise: Two sisters (played by Agnes Bruckner and Caity Lotz) return home after their mother dies and stay overnight in the house. When the lights go out . . . yes, you guessed it – creepy things happen. Yes, folks, ghosts. The twist is the sisters unveil some dark secrets about mumsy. It is what it is – summer product for the young crowd. People Like Us (PG-13) Alex Kurtzman, who worked with Chris Pine in Star Trek, casts his young star in a family dramedy this time around, and Pine once again delivers a fine performance. Cast

It doesn’t sound like much of a plot, but an absorbing screenplay and good actors make it surprisingly
effective. Michelle Pfeiffer and the ever-present Mark Duplass co-star. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (R) We kid you not. Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov team up for this one, and unfortunately, they were apparently serious.

by Asher Lee NOTE FOR ALL SIGNS: Over these next two weeks don’t be driving angry and no running with scissors. The energy is very volatile with Mars, Uranus and Pluto all connecting in a potentially combustible way. Stay calm and don’t ignite the fuse! ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) The note above is especially true for you, Aries, so do your best to stay calm. This is a teachable moment for you, if you allow yourself to use the energy to break the old patterns and respond to circumstances differently. Try a new approach. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) No use worrying about the things you cannot impact right now. Do your best to stay present and why not have a little fun along the way? Do things you enjoy and that will help you stay in the present moment; your worries won’t matter in the end. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) You are not too much and this week is the test! Don’t give your power away to others by trying to make yourself smaller than you really are. PT Barnum said “God wouldn’t make me this way and then punish me for it.” That is your thought for the week. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) What is success to you? It can’t be only about the money and security that provides, it needs to be about the quality of your emotional life as well. Think about success in a bigger way and then move toward living that life. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Boundaries are the key thing this week. Know what you can do and can’t do and don’t feel you have to be all things to all people. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it. Think about it. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Okay, this is not the time to give the crazy person in your head a full time position in your decision making. We all have a crazy person in our head; it is just a matter of making sure it doesn’t run the show. Pay attention and if you find yourself obsessing, know there is another choice. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Passion may return this week if you have been missing it of late. Turn toward the things that move you and away from the things that
don’t. Sounds easy, eh? Well, give it your best try. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Feel the love of those around you and let them help you. I mean really ask for help when you need it rather than feeling that you will gain something if you go things alone. This is not the time to teach yourself a lesson, this is the time to ask for help and allow those who love you to love you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Birthing is the key word this week. Bring forth new ideas and new experiences. Those things that have been gestating within you will now have the opportunity to come out. Now is the time for the new. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Flexibility is the key word this week, so see if you can go with the flow of the energy, rather than trying to force anything into being. If you go with the flow you may find you end up with far more than you imagined. Read the note at the top and stay fluid. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) It’s all good. You above all the other signs will find this week’s energy more comfortable and potentially useful. This otherwise volatile energy is just what you’ve been waiting for to make the changes you may have been frustrated in making in the past. Lead the way – but still no running with scissors! PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Focus will be key this week as you move forward in this dynamic time. Keep your focus on all you have to be grateful for and resist the urge to go to the past or to get focused on what isn’t working in your life. The energy is moving and you need to keep your head in a good place. Resist the funk! NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Today’s Birthday: Suzanne Vega, 1959 Suzanne Vega was born in California but she’s a New York City girl tried and true and now lives in Amagansett. She grew up in Spanish Harlem, studied dance at the high school of performing arts and studied literature at Bernard College. More important, she was a student of the New York folk scene and a disciple of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. When she saw Lou Reed perform, his urban images spoke to her – the resulting blend of lyrics and poetry she produced are a lasting legacy to her creativity. Some of her best work is collected in The Passionate Eye: The Collected Writings Of Suzanne Vega, published by Avon Books. Vega’s self-titled debut album, released in 1985 was a stunning merger of folk and poetry. Songs like “Marlene On The Wall,” “Undertow,” “Small Blue Thing,” and “Neighborhood Girls” influenced a new genre of female singer songwriters and encouraged record executives to promote them. The album is included in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the 100 Best Albums Of The Eighties. In 1987 Vega released Solitude Standing, fueled by the megahit “Luka.” Her a capella version of “Tom’s Diner” was covered by several artists including Tupac Shakur. Subsequent albums didn’t achieve the commercial success of the first two, but Vega continued to produce intriguing music: Songs in Red and Gray, released in 2001, was a critically acclaimed collection fueled by what was reportedly a messy divorce. Vega was a regular on the Lilith Fair tour, often performing with up and coming artists inspired by her. She released a greatest hits album in 2003, and often performs locally at venues like The Stephen Talkhouse.

This past week I had the pleasure of dining at The Coast Grill in North Sea. This cozy maritime themed, fine dining establishment, overlooking the pristine coastline of Wooley Pond, is a food lovers paradise. The rustic New American cuisine brought to you by chef owner Brian Cheewing features some of the more creative and well-executed seafood dishes on the East End. Utilizing
local ingredients, Cheewing has put together a wonderful menu for whatever you may be in the mood for. Stop in for happy hour and enjoy one of their signature cocktails with a snack from the bar menu. Or sit down to a three course dinner and relax with one of the most beautiful views in the Hamptons. I had a delicious crab cake with a wild mushroom fricassee and a nice creamy mild paquillo pepper aioli. The crab cake was moist and light and perfectly seasoned. The mushroom fricassee added a hearty element to the appetizer. For dinner I had the grilled gulf shrimp, the cannelini bean ragout
was fantastic. I highly recommend it. The ragout can also be ordered as a side dish, which is the case for most of the entrée preparations. After dinner I had to try the chocolate truffle cake with the cappuccino gelato. This dessert is pure decadence and a chocolate lover’s dream. We were able to sneak in for an early dinner. By the time we were done the dining room was packed. Be sure to make a reservation. The Coast Grill 1109 Noyac Rd Southampton 631-283-2277 www.thecoastgrill.com

Method To start this dish you will be braising the pork shoulder. This will take a few hours. Begin by blending the honey, soy sauce, mustard, cider vinegar, cumin, chili powder, and 3/4 of the bottle of your favorite barbecue sauce in a food processor or blender. Season your pork shoulder with salt and pepper. Heat a large sauté pan and sear it on high heat on each side for one minute. Transfer the pork shoulder to a deep roasting pan and pour the braising liquid over top. Add two quarts of water. Cover the pork shoulder with tin foil and cook slowly at 325 degrees for four to five hours. After about two and a half hours you can turn the pork shoulder over and finish the cooking process. At

about four hours you can start to cook the farro. Start by bringing the 10 oz package of farro to a boil in a half gallon of salted water. Allow the farro to boil on medium high for about 15 minutes. Once the grains expand and become tender you can strain out any excess water. Now we can think about the artichokes. Pat them dry when you take them out of the can, then toss them in olive oil and roast at 325 degrees for 15 minutes. Once the meat has finished cooking and you
remove it from the oven, allow it to rest and cool for 30 minutes before you pull it. Once you have shredded the pork. Mix some of the braising liquid with the rest of the barbecue sauce, then mix in the shredded pork. At this point, cream the butter and cheeses into your farro, using a bit of chicken stock if it gets too thick. Sprinkle in the parsley and season to your liking. Top with the barbecue pulled pork and some of the crispy roasted artichoke hearts and enjoy. www.chefjoecipro.com
