Today’s Birthday: Jimmy Fallon, 1974 Jimmy Fallon, the former “Saturday Night Live” standout, who now hosts his own late night show, wanted to be a geek and majored in Computer Science at The College of St. Rose in Albany. But Fallon was a natural ham growing up. In fact, he was a huge fan of SNL and often did impressions for his parents. He ended up winning a contest at a Poughkeepsie comedy club, and that launched his career in show biz. He landed a couple of bit parts in films before landing a gig at The Improv Theater. Producers for SNL spotted him and eventually signed him as a featured player for the 1998-99 season. His popularity grew and so did his standing on the show, culminating with a stint as co-anchor of the Weekend Update segment along with Tina Fey. Fallon never forgot his quest for a Computer Science degree, though, and after being awarded an a honorary degree in 2009 he proudly displayed his diploma on television. And, yes, that’s him you see around East Hampton from time to time.

New To Theaters The Master (R ) *Joaquin Phoenix is sensational as a sailor who returns home after World War II and falls under the spell of a cult leader, brilliantly played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will be Blood) brilliantly weaves this off-kilter tale and it leaves viewers struggling for answers by the film’s end. Costarring Amy Adams and Laura Dern. The cast may earn several Oscar nominations among them.

The Inbetweeners (R) This British TV series, about four nerds who go on vacation and bond, has been done many, many times starting with American Pie. This one, like most of the others, is crude and silly, but funny. Add a star if you are a nerdy 15 year-old with nerdy friends who like to bond. For A Good Time Call... (R) You knew they were coming after the success of Bridesmaids – female buddy movies. This one works, thanks to a sassy script by newcomers Lauren Anne Miller and Katie Anne Naylon. Seth Rogen, Nia Vardalos, Mimi Rogers and Justin Long lead a solid cast. Premium Rush (PG-13) * September begins the golden season for film lovers, when the big summer action blockbusters fade and the serious awards contenders are released. David Koepp, one of Hollywood’s go-to film writers (Spider Man, Mission Impossible) wrote and directed this sleeper about an aggressive New York City bicycle messenger who finds himself targeted for death. It’s a good one, and New Yorkers will especially love it – whether it plays well in Hollywood remains to be seen, but we may have our first Oscar contender. Don’t miss it. Sleepwalk With Me (NR) Comedian Mike Birbiglia employs a documentary technique to tell his first person tale of a struggling comedian trying to make it to the big time. He made most of the stuff up but no matter, it’s a hilarious tale indeed. Don’t miss it.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits This animated film bombed in the theaters but should play much better at home for the kids. Hugh Grant is charming as the Pirate Captain who takes on the villainous Black Bellamy (Jeremy Pevin) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek). Shiver me timbers and all that sort of stuff.
The Expendables 2 (R) It’s hard to believe they made another one, but they did. This time around, as in their first effort, Sly Stallone and his Over The Hill Gang of mercenaries ham it up while the bodies stack up. Stallone penned the suitably unbelievable script, and Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis et al pick up an easy paycheck while perpetuating the myth that they are still tough guys.
The photographic exhibition “Wet” with artists Luiza de Moraes Campos and James Katsipis was held this past Saturday night at the Outeast Gallery and Goods in Montauk. Some people in attendance with the artists were Scott Pitches, gallery owner, Gus and Diane Katsipis, Kathleen Stenson and her dog Harry, Kai Costanzo, Julie Levanthal, Jon Graziano, Jason Galka and Janet Russell. The show will be on display through October 8.

Roasted Spaghetti Squash & Brussel Sprouts With Herbed Butter Sauce Ingredients (serves 4) 1 large spaghetti squash 1 lb Brussels sprouts 1 clove of garlic sliced thin 1/4 c olive oil 1/4 lb butter 1/4 c chicken stock 1 tbsp of thyme (picked) 1 tbsp tarragon (picked & chopped) 1 tbsp chervil (chopped) salt and pepper to taste
Method Start by washing the outside of the spaghetti squash. Split it lengthwise down the middle, scrape out the seeds, and place the squash on a sheet tray with the skin side down. Roast in the oven at 400 degrees for one hour. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and quarter your brussel sprouts. Cook the Brussels sprouts in the boiling water for about two minutes. Immediately place in an ice
bath to cool them down. Strain and reserve in the refrigerator until later. Heat the chicken stock to a simmer. Take off the heat and slowly whisk in the cold butter until you have created a sauce. When you have achieved a sauce like consistency set the sauce aside until later. When the spaghetti squash is finished roasting, fork out the tender roasted flesh part of the squash. Heat two pans over medium heat and add the olive oil evenly. Begin sautéing the garlic in each pan. The squash will go in one pan and the Brussels sprouts in the other. Cut side down for the Brussels sprouts to create a nice sear. Brown each of the vegetables and season to your liking. At this point you are ready to warm the butter sauce and add the herbs to the sauce. Don’t heat it too high or you will break the sauce. Plate the vegetables and ladle a bit of sauce over the top and enjoy.
