UPCOMING Bryan Downey
Sag Harbor portrait photographer, Bryan Downey, will have a solo exhibit of 37 locals prints on display at Sag Town Coffee. Local characters include artists, writers, musicians, a sports legend, a WWII hero, pre-schoolers, Shinnecock Native Americans and more. The show is fittingly called “LOCALS” and will run Saturday through Memorial Day. Downey has been working exclusively with the people of the Shinnecock and will be donating 100 percent of profit sales back to the tribe's Youth Program.
Up On The Roof
Vinny Pacifico, a graffiti collector for over twenty years, invited artists from around the world to put their mark on his roof in the Hunts Point meatpacking district of the Bronx. Then his roof flooded and he had to start over. That’s where The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton and three of its artists come in, to document a perishable art. On a cold day last November, CES and YES2, two internationally renowned graffiti artists, agreed to show how it’s done with each picking a respective piece of the roof as a canvas. It required a bit less adrenaline than working on a subway car in the middle of the night but as CES said,
“It took twenty years to make it look this easy.” The show, “Up On The Roof,” features three local, award winning artists/photographers – Kat O’Neill, Ann Brandeis and Guy Pierno with their respective interpretations of the roof gallery as well as their take on the controversy over whether graffiti is art or vandalism. CES AND YES2 will create new pieces during the opening reception on Saturday from 5 to 7 PM. Though their styles are quite different, both bring an amazing vibrancy to their creations. There will also be a video of the graffiti on the roof with CES and YES2 bringing concrete to life. The show runs through April 24.

East Hampton artist Jerry Schwabe will be exhibiting oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings at the Quogue Library Art Gallery during the month of April. Eclipsed
Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave) delivers a riveting performance in Eclipsed, Danai Gurira’s new play which moved from the Public Theater to the Golden on Broadway (252 West 45th Street). Set in war torn Liberia, Nyong’o portrays a young girl hiding in a rebel camp, where, discovered by the Commander, she is forced to become his sex slave. His other captives are wife #1, gracefully played by Saycon Sengbloh and wife #3, the pregnant one, imbued by Pascale Armand with childlike rebelliousness. Along with Zainab Jah, wife #2, who escapes by joining the militants – kidnapping or killing other young women in order to protect herself, and Akosua Busia, a representative of the Initiative for Peace, the all female cast creates a textured soulful ensemble. Each one in search of who they are or were before their identities were wiped away by rape,
violence and war. Director Liesl Tommy orchestrates this production, moving from the horrifying daily servitude of these Liberian women to the moment where they are forced to make choices for themselves. The outcome, rife with ambiguity and uncertainty, leaves each to their separate peace -- or the absence thereof. More Fighting In The Royale at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater (150 West 60th Street), an African American prizefighter takes on the white man who holds the heavyweight crown. Based on the life of Jack Johnson, the first African American world heavyweight champion, playwright Marco Ramirez finds a unique theatrical approach to telling this story. While the action is focused on the ring, neither of the boxers takes any physical blows; the fighting is choreographed,

revealing the psychology of the boxers whose thoughts are revealed through their own stream of consciousness. And both men, Khris Davis as Jay, the challenger, who takes to the sport like an indomitable showman, and McKinley Belcher III as his wide eyed sparring partner, Fish, are beautiful to watch. Still, the characters exist primarily to serve the playwright’s issue about race relations and the perpetuation of violence. As the voice of reason, Montego Glover portrays Jay’s sister. Through her powerful admonitions, the simple truth – the pen is mightier than the sword – speaks amply to Ramirez’s cause. Director Rachel Chavkin, known for her innovative directorial style, really throws a punch. Funky Tut Somehow, Steve Martin’s Funky Tut, a musical parody from “Saturday Night Live” in 1978 of The Met’s popular King Tut exhibit, speaks to my appreciation of Egyptology. Having traveled up the Nile River through Luxor and Aswan, and witnessed firsthand the awe inspiring finds of ancient Egypt, I see how one can easily get lost in and confused by the multitude of archeological discoveries. Martin’s lyrics, especially the line, “Born in Arizona, he moved to Babylona” evoke that disconnectedness, which may be difficult to fathom, but as a lay tourist, I must confess even the most awesome sites start to look the same, after awhile. Fortunately, The King Tut exhibit, such a rage in the 70s, at museums such as The National Gallery in Washington DC and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is back in town through May 15. Of course,

unlike a river cruise up the Nile, the golden charms, vessels and icons we see here at Premier Exhibitions Fifth Avenue (37th-38th Streets) are reproductions. Nonetheless, the audio guides and the selection of architectural finds that we can now view are so vividly and lucidly explored within this tour that one can begin to grasp the depth and breadth of the exotic world that existed thousands of years ago. An interactive experience with videos and with close up views of King Tut’s tomb and even his mummified remains, (reproductions, indeed), the exhibit is equally enjoyable for kids, and for anyone who delights in challenging the imagination. For the irrepressible child in us all, one should also catch Saturday Night Live: The Exhibition next door in the exhibit hall. Here one gets to meet Tina Fey, (her on-camera self, that is) and view some of the oldest and most memorable “SNL” sketches. The most fascinating part of this exhibit is the peek we get into the behind the scenes planning and thinking, which are documented here in videos of the writers and actors at work creating the show for the week. We watch them cull through a multitude of ideas, pare them down to the ones which will air, and see the bizarre transformations actors achieve with the help of awesome makeup artists. Even after 40 years on the air, “Saturday Night Live” remains a cultural phenomenon. And it’s a welcome contrast to the overwhelming exhibit of the boy king.
