SURFS UP!
Jam
By Lucia Schaldenko If you are tired of the same old workout routine and want to challenge yourself and experience something completely new, Surfset is the key to shaking up your workout.
After taking my first Surfset Class at Well Within Studio in East Hampton, I was dripping in sweat, my abs were on fire and I felt an adrenaline rush, one I imagine to be similar to what those cool surfers feel after a serious session

in the ocean. If I could use two words to describe Surfset they would be core and balance. The entire workout tightens, tones, and strengthens your abdominal muscles like no other fitness class out there. After a few classes, you will start to notice your balance improving. The board is designed to move with your entire body weight, mimicking the real feeling of surfing. It is up to you to maintain your stability with your core strength. Try doing a standard burpee. Then try doing a burpee on a Surfset board. Once you do you will know what I am talking about! In the 45-minute class, you will experience duck diving, popping up, paddling, and moves that build lean and long muscle tone and increase your flexibility. Have I mentioned the resistance bands? Well, to top it off, there are some serious resistance bands that give your arms that extra kick in the butt and take your workout to the next level. Surfset classes are the most unique, challenging, and fun way you can get your fitness on. Between the cardio, muscle building moves, and of course good music, by the time class is finished you will feel like you just had the most sensational workout experience. If you want to try surfing it is a great segue to get one foot in the water, ha! If you are a surfer and want to build and retain muscle tone and increase your aerobic and anaerobic capacity, Surfset classes are a great resource. Myself, and Emma Field teach Surfset at Well Within Studio. Swing by and give it a try!

Broadway Reporting From
By Isa Goldberg
As a lover of words, a logophile indeed, playwright Richard Greenberg is the master of teasing, intellectuallydriven dialogue. Serving food for thought that would thrill a gourmand, Our Mother’s Brief Affair is, similarly, a delicious celebration of the theater. Its subject, revolving around death and dying, speaks to the affair of the title. After all, could there be any greater betrayal than death itself? As the play opens, Anna (Linda Lavin) is holed up in a hospital room, referred to by her snarky son, Seth (Greg Keller), as “her pied-a-terre.” Facing the end of her life, dear old mom reveals the secrets of her youth, including an alleged affair with a man of dubious identity, portrayed by John Procaccino. Not to spoil the plot, that character won’t be disclosed here even though this production at the Manhattan Theater Club’s Samuel Friedman Theatre ended its run on March 6. Ushered to its scheduled closing date by poor reviews, Greenberg’s comedy remains worthy of consideration and future incarnations. Until then, suffice it to say that Anna, in mourning for her sister who died when they were children in a poor embittered Brooklyn household, links her death to a series of losses, including the execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Leave it to Greenberg – from the nuclear family to the nuclear you know what, this story bends and turns devilishly. Seth, an obituary writer, describes Anna’s apocryphal revelations about her affair as a kind of psychological event that takes place when the shunt between the dreaming mind and the orderly mind breaks down. It’s the drama within and between the
(& Sometimes Off)
characters that is the essence of this unpredictable comedy, directed with some finesse by Lynne Meadow. Lavin is brilliant as Anna, riding the confessions and inventions of her mind all while sustaining the mystery. Being a Jewish mother, after all, her tale of betrayal also leads to some finger wagging, offering a parable about love and loyalty. It’s that which she imparts to the two people who remain in her life, her twins. Seth, who Greg Keller plays with sensitive grit and Abby to whom Kate Arrington brings appropriate measures of urbane wit and charm. In the end, it’s their story to resolve. In The Spotlight In John Patrick Shanley’s new play at Manhattan Theatre Club’s City Center stage, the playwright harkens back to the catholic high school of his youth. Parallels to his Tony Award winning, Doubt, while obvious, are also sharpened by the plot involving a homosexual teacher. More importantly, Prodigal Son is an unabashedly autobiographical work about the playwright as a rebellious youth. And Shanley sustains the poetry of the character by delving un-empathically, but sentimentally into his personal pathos. His Jim Quinn is distrustful, quick to anger, and desperately in search of validation, as he tries to overcome his tough Bronx upbringing. The play is certainly poignant, but what takes it over the top is the charismatic young actor Timothee Chalamet (“Homeland”) as Jim. Chalamet captures Shanley, who also directs this production, unto his very visage and physique, even imitating his gestures and gait.
Michael Cumpsty, Michael Crane
In the role of teacher and mentor, Rober t Sean Leonard, gives an especially subtle portrayal of the teacher whose encouragement is interpreted as teasing. Not to be snowed by empty flattery, Jim seeks to expose the situation, causing revelations for others that rival his own self-discovery. As the school’s headmaster, Chris McGarry is firm and understated, while Annika Boras as his wife evokes the disciplined and discerning behavior of a strong-minded woman of the ‘50s. Santo Loquasto’s set plays eloquently on the concept of perspective. Heroes and Victims One can’t help but have a strong reaction to the physical violence described in Body of An American. Simply, there aren’t any pretty pictures in Dan O’Brien’s play, inspired by the work of photojournalist Paul Watson. His Pulitzer Prize-winning photo of a mutilated American officer being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu by a Somalian mob reportedly motivated the withdrawal
of American troops. The photo, taken in 1993, has been credited with shaping our foreign policy as well as Al Qaeda’s propaganda machine. Based on Watson’s memoirs and reported conversations, the play takes us on an introspective journey into Watson’s troubled conscience, framing the docudrama as an onstage dialogue between himself, the questioning playwright, and Watson, the traumatized war journalist. The distinguished Michael Cumpsty, appearing grizzled here, portrays Paul Watson, while Michael Crane plays the author, documenting their relationship along with the development of this play. To that end, the storytelling is quite fluid with each actor filling in for other characters and even switching roles at time. Director Jo Bonney mines the experience, sending shrapnel and other war fragments into our view. This production, by Primary Stages at the Cherry Lane Theater in conjunction with Hartford Stage Company, marks the play’s New York premiere.

Coming Soon The Legend Of Barney Thomson (NR) Robert Carlyle’s little film about a hapless barber who stumbles into becoming a serial murderer has been getting interesting reviews, infuriating some critics and mesmerizing others. Worth a try. An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick.
New To Theaters The Lobster * (R) The director Yorgos Lanthimose has fashioned a brilliantly offbeat film that is part Science Fiction/Fantasy and part Comedy/Cult. Colin Farrell lives in a world where man must either choose a mate in 45 days or be transformed into an animal. It’s offbeat to be sure, and it yearns to be a little bit of everything without focusing on a central theme, but it is wildly original and inventive. Rachel Weisz co-stars.
