ate satisfaction” of being able to wear the piece when complete. When asked if Rachel has any interest in design, Alana piped in with that she definitely runs each design by Rachel, who will give a more honest, business savvy response to rein her in. Kind of like the brutally honest but super good gal pal asking you what the hell are you wearing, change it! The handmade baubles can be purchased through their website, which to this tech-wary girl was easy enough to navigate. When they started, the girls had a goal to get their goodies sold on Shopbop and at Calypso. Success: their jewels will be in all of the Calypso St Barth stores come fourth of July weekend. Hey, the fireworks aren’t the only things allowed to sparkle that weekend.
The Surf Lodge is notorious for stunning sunsets, if evident from all the selfie snaps on Instagram of breathtaking skies, made from a palette Picasso couldn’t have dreamed up. Being that I didn’t have a sober driver (I don’t think I’d look good like OITNB in prison scrubs either), I decided to forgo the rosé and call it a day. All that indeed glitters was gold at The Surf Lodge that weekend.
All that glitters is gold they say . . . But in the case of Phyllis + Rosie, a fresh (2014) jewelry line, it looks like all that glitters is gold . . . and silver . . . and rose gold. Right before the big heat waves and even bigger crowds crowd the East End, I decided to head to Montauk. Montauk is now the home to many trendy outposts, such as The Surf Lodge.

Known for its younger, hip clientele (I believe Leo - as in Dicaprio - was spotted there recently), the Surf Lodge is also known for its outstanding summer concert series and pop-up shops such as Phyllis + Rosie. Saturday, June 13, was Trombone Shorty, with Solange (Knowles, you know) spinning later on. Of course, with these hot ticket musicians, there was already a mob waiting to be graced with the gift of entry. The story of Phyllis + Rosie sounds like a standard yuccie story (young urban creatives for all of you not up on your slang). Alana Blank and Rachel Lapour, two women in their 20’s quit their corporate day jobs to follow their passion and create a super sleek, urban jewelry line. Dainty without being too delicate or girly, the super streamlined pieces are extremely modern. Thin midi rings, hammered cuffs in a range of metals, and beaded lariats make up some of the work on display. A raw quartz necklace immediately attracted my interest, reminding me of the one I wore in the second grade but upgraded to a delicate gold chain instead of the youthful black leather cord I sported on the playground.
OUTNET.COM is launching an exclusive summer edit of 17 limitededition styles and doing same day delivery to the Hamptons for any orders placed on the collection throughout the summer. The designer pieces are all travel essentials – perfect for a stylish getaway.
It's a story of yin and yang. Alana is the designer and founder, and Rachel handles more of the business aspect. Alana was always extremely creative, making things with her hands, enjoying the “immedi11

Beck Photos by Peter Hapak
of Jack White, Juanes, Norah Jones, David Johansen, Beck himself and many more featured on the first ever studio recordings of its songs).
Beck has traveled light years from being pegged as a reluctant generational spokesperson when “Loser” metamorphosed from a rejected demo to a ubiquitous smash. Instead he wound up crystallizing much of the post-modern ruckus of the ‘90s alternative explosion, but in his own unpredictable manner: Beck’s singular career has been one that’s seen him utilize all manners and eras of music, blurring boundaries and blazing a path into the future while simultaneously foraging through the past.
Beck’s relentless creative tide continued unabated throughout 2013 with three standalone singles released digitally and on 12-inch vinyl (“Defriended,” “I Won’t Be Long,” “Gimme”), custom-created performances for Doug Aitken’s “Station to Station” series of transient happenings, a run of live shows--touted by reviewers the world over as among the very best of his career--and special Song Reader events in which Beck and eclectic line-ups brought the book to life in unforgettable evenings staged in only a handful of cities including in San Francisco, London, and Disney Hall in Los Angeles.
Surfacing just as alternative rock went mainstream, no small thanks to his 1994 debut Mellow Gold, Beck quickly confounded expectations with subsequent releases including the lo-fi folk of One Foot in the Grave. But the album that truly cemented Beck’s place in the pantheon was 1996’s multi-platinum Odelay, that touched upon all of his obsessions, providing a cultural keystone for the decade from the indelible hook of “Devil’s Haircut” to the irresistible call and response of the anthemic “Where It’s At.” From the world-tripping atmospherics of 1998’s Mutations and the florescent funk of 1999’s Midnite Vultures through the somber reflections of 2002’s Sea Change, 2005’s platinum tour de force Guero and 2006’s sprawling The Information, no Beck record has ever sounded like its predecessor. In the interim following 2008’s acclaimed Danger Mouse-produced Modern Guilt, Beck eschewed the typical album/tour/ repeat cycle of the music business.
Beck opened 2014 with the 12th--and possibly most well received album of a peerless career: Morning Phase. Likened by some to a companion piece of sorts to his 2002 masterpiece Sea Change, Morning Phase features many of the same musicians who played on that record--and who also currently accompanied Beck live on the rapturously received world tour supporting the record: Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner. Featuring the hits “Blue Moon” and “Heart Is A Drum” along with instant classics like “Waking Light” and “Wave”, Morning Phase harkens back to the stunning harmonies, classic Californian song craft and staggering emotional impact of that record, while surging forward with infectious optimism.
Instead, he expanded his creative palette into such multi-media endeavors as a one-time-only live re-imagination of David Bowie’s “Sound and Vision” utilizing 160+ musicians in a 360-degree audiovisual production, and the equally unprecedented Beck Hansen’s Song Reader, originally released December 2012 by McSweeney’s as 20 songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music, complete with full-color original art for each song and a lavishly produced hardcover carrying case (and since reimagined as an actual album with the likes
Beck rolled into 2015 taking the Album of the Year top honor at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, as well as the prize for Best Rock Album. Morning Phase also won in the Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical) category. With three previous Grammy wins to his credit--Two Best Alternative Music Performance award for Mutations and Odelay and one Best Male Rock Vocal Performance award for “Where It’s At”—Beck walked away from attending and performing at this year’s awards with double his previous Grammy tally. 16

Frozen Margarita
We recently came back from a beautiful vacation in St. Barths. When we weren’t enjoying the lush beaches, dining at world class French restaurants, or just shopping in the elegant city of Gustavia, we were passing the time laying out by the pool sipping on frozen margaritas. The margaritas fared well with the heat and kept us chilled while we enjoyed a sunset so great it put things into perspective. We blended a few batches before we were able to perfect the frozen margarita and in the end the recipe turned out to be:

them. Start by mixing the salt, sugar, and spices together then generously coating the duck legs. Cover and let sit in the fridge over night. When you are ready to begin cooking, set your oven to 350. Wash the excess cure from the duck legs and pat them dry. Find a large oven proof vessel to cook the duck legs in. Submerge them in the fat. Either duck fat if you can find it or canola oil will work fine. Place in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes, just to get the oil up to temperature. Reduce the heat to 275 and let the duck legs cook for three and a half more hours. While the duck legs are cooking you can dice the leeks and squash. Go ahead and make your tomato sauce by first cutting the top off the tomatoes. Put them in the oven with the duck legs for 15 minutes.
Ingredients 4 duck legs 1/2 c sugar 1 c salt 1 tbsp black peppercorns (ground) 1 tsp star anise (ground) 10 tomatoes 2 cloves of garlic sliced thin 1/4 c olive oil 1 lb dried gemelli pasta 1 c mâché leaves (washed) Grated Parmesan 1 cup diced butter nut squash 1/2 sliced leeks 2 tbsp butter 1 gallon duck fat or canola oil will work in a pinch Salt and pepper to your liking
When you remove the tomatoes from the oven, allow them to cool for 10 minutes the simply peel the skin off. Crush them with your hand, then put on the stove top in a large sauce pot. Heat the olive oil and garlic but do not brown the garlic. Put the tomato into the pot and cook over medium heat for 20 minutes. When the duck legs are ready, remove them from the oven and use a slotted spoon to remove them from the hot oil. Place them on a towel and let them cool until they can be handled. When they are cool pick the duck meat. You are now ready to cook the pasta. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook the pasta stirring often for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat a large sauté pan. Add a bit of olive oil and sauté the leeks and squash. When the squash gets a bit of color add the sauce, then the duck. When the pasta is cooked add the pasta and the butter. Garnish with the mâché and grated cheese. Enjoy!
Method You will start the night before you are going to serve this dish. The duck legs need to sit in the cure over night before you confit

Hamptons-based artist Daniel Pollera has created a painting to reflect the mission of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. The painting, titled “A Path To A Cure,” will be viewed by the public for the first time on July 2 at the ArtHamptons Opening Night Preview in Bridgehampton, where it will be exhibited for sale and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Foundation. “When I was first asked by Linda Shapiro of LBS Productions to be involved with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation’s annual ‘A Hamptons Happening’ fundraiser, I had never met Sam Waxman or his lovely wife Marion,” said Pollera.
Photo by Tom Fitzgerald and Pam Deutchman / www.society-in-focus.com
“I felt a strong connection with everyone involved. Sam had asked me to do a painting that reflected the mission of the Foundation and he wanted to make it into a poster. Ideas were racing through my mind as I thought about losing my mother to cancer and other friends to this dreadful disease.” The mission of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is to eradicate cancer by funding cutting-edge research that identifies and corrects abnormal gene function that causes cancer and develops minimally toxic treatments for patients. This year’s “A Hamptons Happening” benefit takes place July 11 in Bridgehampton at the home of Maria and Keneth Fishel and family, the same location as ArtHamptons. This year lead chefs include Mauro Maccioni & The Le Cirque Restaurant Group and John DeLucie of The Lion and Bill’s Food & Drink. Marc Leder, co-CEO of Sun Capital Partners, Inc., and Bobby Zarin, Chairman of Zarin Fabrics will be honored. “Sam is dedicated to finding a cure,” continued Pollera. “When you think about it, isn’t is reassuring to know that while we all wait to see if some day cancer will strike us or a loved one that somebody is out there working hard to find a cure? Sam is doing that, so I felt I needed to do my part to help him by creating this image.”

Pollera created “A Path To A Cure,” a beach scene that represents the work of SWCRF. “Although the painting was created in my imagination, it was also influenced by my thoughts of empathy, commitment and happiness in finding a cure that awaits us on the horizon.

Summer always brings great weather and great food. I got a chance to sample a lot of great food at this year’s Long Island Hospitality Ball which was created by Keith Hart and benefitted the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund and Spirits Up this year with Alec Baldwin hosting. Brother Billy Baldwin was also in attendance and was so gracious in taking pictures with the swarm of guests who surrounded him. Some of the restaurants I got to sample include Acacia, Roots, Ariola Foods, Inc., Honu, Ciao Baby, La Bussola, Bravo! Nader, Parlay, Stix, 388 Italian Restaurant, Le Fusion, Sweet Karma Desserts, East Coast Roast and Chocolate Works, to name a few! Rich and Mike Cave of 1st Equity and www.PinkTie.org supported the event and are pictured below with Cecil Fielder (NY Yankees) and Sean Landeta (NY Giants). Richard “Big Daddy” Salgado of Coastal Advisors LLC is also pictured with Erik Coleman (NY Jets).

Movies are a big hit this summer season and two that I enjoyed at the SOHO International Film Festival this year were Leaves of the Tree and The Networker, both had Donna McKenna, CSA, cast their movies and she has another coming up later in the year titled Saturday in the Park, a Larry Romano film. Pictures seen above are from Leaves of the Tree which originated from a book written by David Healey, who is pictured with his wife Becky and the cast of the movie. Next month I’ll bring you some fun photos and interviews from the wrap party of Lost Cat Corona which stars Ralph Macchio, Gina Gershon, Sean Young and Jeff Kober. Paul Sorvino, David Zayas, Barbara Rosenblat, John D’Leo, Adam Ferrara, Stacia Crawford, Summer Crockett Moore and Franky G also make up this amazing cast. Written and directed by Anthony Tarsitano. Food, film and Fourth of July all make the summer FUN! If you’d like to be considered for an interview or want to get in touch with me, email me at annemarie@famehampton.com. 26
