Vered Gallery

Jessica Lichtenstein - PEEP SHOW since become central to her body of work. What began as a playful exploration of the figurines themselves—putting them in thoughtprovoking scenes and miniature dioramas, in various states of undress—has evolved and grown in step with her blossoming career. PEEP SHOW marks the next step in Lichtenstein’s evolution, as an artist expanding on her complex themes of desire, sexuality, lust and female empowerment. The sexually charged hentai characters remain an essential component of the work, but Lichtenstein’s now places them in fantastical, digitally created worlds, rife with frolicking girls - all of them enjoying their surreal, beautiful and eroticized surroundings. Called “Word Sculptures,” these new works feature Lichtenstein’s scenes - scenes that play to those of nude bathers depicted by Renoir, Cezanne or Picasso - tableaux integrated into thick, clear acrylic letters that together spell evocative words, such as “WILD,” “DIRTY,” “BLISS,” “POP” or “WAR,” to name a few. The artist enjoys pushing buttons and testing the boundaries of her viewers and collectors, but she also sees the figures as symbols of lost innocence, fetish objects and idealized forms. “I like depictions of the female form, not in a sexual way, but in a beautiful way,” she says. “Oddly enough it’s mostly women who are drawn to the work. They have the ability to imagine themselves in that world and as that girl.” PEEP SHOW opens with a reception for the artist at Vered Gallery, Saturday, May 25 from 9 to 11 PM. The exhibition will run through June 17.

PEEP SHOW, Jessica Lichtenstein’s first solo exhibition in the Hamptons, opens Memorial Day Weekend at Vered Gallery in East Hampton. Lichtenstein has already established her reputation as one of New York’s hottest young artists known for her anime inspired, doll filled tableaux and the wildly imaginative worlds she creates with her “Word Sculptures.” This exhibition at Vered Gallery marks the next step in her evolution as an internationally acclaimed artist. Jessica Lichtenstein was never obsessed with the world of Japanese animation or its X-rated hentai subgenre, but something attracted her to the small, titillating figurines of its female characters and they have

Les Ballets de Faile During the 2013 winter season, New York City Ballet launched a new initiative called the New York City Ballet Art Series. The series features annual collaborations with contemporary visual artists who will create original works inspired by NYCB that are exhibited at the Company’s home at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. To kick off the new initiative, NYCB commissioned FAILE, the Brooklyn-based artist team of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller. Best known as early pioneers of the contemporary Urban Art movement, their pop-culture aesthetics consist of resampled visual imagery applied to various media through painting and printmaking. For the inaugural series, FAILE created an exhibition titled “Les Ballets de Faile,” which featured a 40-foot tower installed on the Promenade of the David H. Koch Theater. The tower was created in FAILE’s signature style, using iconography inspired by several months of research at New York City Ballet and its archives, along with FAILE’s signature library of images. The exhibition also featured a new suite of FAILE paintings displayed in the theater’s lobbies. In addition to the theater exhibition, the series will also feature a special performances on Wednesday, May 29 at 7:30 PM. Working in partnership with the ad agency DDB, New York City Ballet has designed the evening to reach culturally-minded New Yorkers in their 20s and 30s who may not have previously attended New York City Ballet’s performances, with tickets priced at just $29 for every seat in the house. To further engage audiences, NYCB has commissioned FAILE to create limited edition hand-painted works that will be given to audience members who attend these performances to commemorate the evening. Since its inception in 1999, FAILE has become recognized as one of the leading artists in the contemporary Urban Art movement and distinguished themselves in the contemporary art world. Their work explores duality through a fragmented style of appropriation and collage. Working in a range of media from canvas, prints and stencils to multimedia installation and sculptures, FAILE’s work is constructed from resampled visual imagery and blurs the line between “high” and “low” culture. The duo has been exhibited in various galleries, museums and non-traditional venues throughout the

17

world. For more information and to see other works by the artists, visit www.faile.net. The New York City Ballet Arts Series performance on May 29 will consist of Peter Martins’ A Fool for You, Ulysses Dove’s Red Angels, Justin Peck’s In Creases, and Richard Tanner’s Sonatas and Interludes. Caterer and celebrity chef, Roblé Ali, star of Bravo TV’s hit show “Chef Roblé & Co.,” is renowned for his culinary skill and creativity, and he is set to make his mark in the entertainment field as well. As part of the parody rap trio Food-Tang Clan, Roblé, along with “Chef Roblé & Co.” co-star and culinary co-conspirator Ché “Gravy” and food enthusiast Jason “J. Brew” Brewster, released their first single, “Grubbin’ Problems,” on SoundCloud.com. “Grubbin’ Problems,” a creative and humorous take on A$AP Rocky’s “F-----g Problems,” offers listeners a look at one of the dilemmas faced by foodies the world over: too many temptations in the kitchen, pantry, and elsewhere. Whether it is trying to resist the allure of their own creations or those of store-bought snacks, Food-Tang Clan hilariously details the many culinary delights they love. The group uses clever rhymes, lyrical ability and knowledge of all things culinary to bring entertaining, light-hearted rap songs to music fans. Opening for 2 Chainz—who did the hook for the original “F-----g Problems”—Food-Tang Clan performed for the first time on February 23 in their hometown of Poughkeepsie at the MidHudson Civic Center. The group entertained the crowd with “Grease,” a wicked spin on Trinidad James’s “All Gold Everything.” From stuffing and gravy to the remedy for a girl who cooks “wack chicken” to a shout out to the beloved Hostess Twinkie, “Grubbin’ Problems” offers listeners a tongue-in-cheek peek into the kitchen of Food-Tang Clan. The group, which is produced by Slimmy Neutron—Ali and Aahmek Richards serve as executive producers—plans to release a series of music videos and a mixtape, Watch the Stove. WORDS

a ll e v o N A , Scott Too By Jessica Mackin

“Scott Too,” a novella by local author Victor Giannini, is a supernatural tale of a late 20-something forced to, literally, live with himself. Lead character Scott Alvin returns home to his brownstone apartment in Brooklyn after a near-death experience surviving a drive-by shooting at the local bodega. What he finds when he opens the door is himself sitting on his couch hanging with his roommate and best friend, Jase, a pot-dealing tattoo artist. After naming the new Scott, Scott Two, he becomes the third roommate in the two-bedroom apartment. He forces the original Scott to live with his “better self” while Scott Two steals not only his identity, but his bed, his clothing, his best friend and the girl he’s after -- all while not paying rent. It turns out that living alone will lead to a lot of self discovery, and perhaps an identity crisis of the highest order. You can only tolerate so much of yourself before things take a turn for the worst. Scott realizes his life has gone from pure adrenalin-filled excitement, as a skateboarding, girl-swooning, partier, to completely stagnant. He discovers that he has become complacent. His phone never rings and he hasn’t had a girlfriend in years. He holds on to the past as if it will return. The “cosmic punishment” of having his body double living with him forces him to discover that changes need to be made. Even though they may share the same memories,

19

they do not need to share the same paths in life. Giannini paints the vivid images of the apartment where Jase, Scott and Scott Two live, while bringing the characters to life in this intense, and beautifully worded short novel. Scott comes to terms with his lost youth and what has become of his life. The story will make the reader think about the possibilities and ask “How would I see myself if forced to live with myself?” Giannini, a 29-year-old author and artist from Springs, holds an MFA in Creative Writing and Literature from Stony Brook Southampton where he currently teaches the Young American Writers Program to grades 7 to 12. “Scott Too” is published by Silverthought Press and is available at www.silverthought.com/scotttoo.

his stash, which I thoroughly enjoyed and which was smart because I never ratted him out. I’ve since discovered that Auntie dunked the cookies into her afternoon tea, but felt them too humdrum to include in her holiday bounty. Or so she says.

“Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots” is the debut novel from young author Jessica Soffer. “Apricots” is about two women adrift in New York: Victoria is an Iraqi Jewish widow, and Lorca is the latchkey daughter of a cold, judgmental mother. Their lives come together through cooking lessons Victoria teaches in her home, as together they forge a new kind of family. It’s a true foodie book filled with Iraqi Jewish cooking. Jessica grew up with the cooking of Iraq: her father came to the US in 1948 and, as she tells it, “his only cultural carryover was his food, as he had to give up his identity (national, religious, and otherwise).” Jessica grew up going to Amagansett with her parents every year. She wrote the majority of “Apricots” at the East Hampton Library, where she has a particular table she sits at every day. She will be speaking at BookHampton (North Fork) on June 8 and BookHampton (East Hampton) July 21.

SHAKRLAMA Ingredients: ½ cup of butter ½ cup confectioners’ sugar 1 cup and 1 teaspoon sifted flour ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom 1 teaspoon rosewater ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract A pinch of salt Handful of pistachio halves or almonds for decoration

Here Jessica shares a recipe for Shakrlama: My father’s sister, Auntie Violette, is the best cook I know. For Passover we would go to her house on Long Island where she’d been cooking for days and days. The air was always thick with Arabic perfume and the orangey smells of cumin, paprika, cinnamon. Auntie would make heaps of desserts, stacking them high on a platter and as the cooking continued, and the day went on, people noshed: a nut and honey turnover here, a date and almond ball there. One day I caught Violette’s husband, my Uncle Jack, unearthing a shoe-box from below the kitchen table. He stuffed a different kind of dessert into his mouth. He grinned at me guiltily when I caught him. In the years that followed, he never said anything about the missing shakrlama from

Directions: Preheat oven to 350F. Combine butter, sugar, flour, cardamom, rosewater, vanilla and salt. Knead well. Form into cakes about 2 inches in diameter. Space them one inch apart on baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Decorate with nuts. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. Make for 8-10 minutes, or until cookies are a pale golden brown but cooked through.

Read about shakrlama in “Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots.” Lorca wants to make something for her mother, who has come down with a cold. Victoria hits upon shakrlama, and they bake the cookies together.

Coinciding with the release of Baz Luhrmann’s rendition of The Great Gatsby this summer, “Beautiful Fools” is an engrossing and heartbreaking novel that details the unraveling of one of the greatest literary love stories of our time. R. Clifton Spargo vividly depicts deeply human characters in this spectacular story illuminating the little-known Cuban rendezvous the Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald took during the twilight of their volatile relationship.

Wampum, an American made lifestyle clothing company started by Montauk brothers Lennon and Marley Ficalora, will be expanding this summer. The brothers will be opening a third Wampum location on the boardwalk in Coney Island on May 24 to go along with their stores in Bridgehampton and New York City. The Coney Island store is just the beginning of Wampum’s big plans for the summer. There will be unique

Wampum pop-ups throughout the Hampton’s and Montauk so keep an eye out for your favorite clothing company and skate shop. The Wampum Coney Island store is going to be located at 1232 Surf Avenue directly across from Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs. The store, which opens on Memorial Day Weekend and closes on Labor Day Weekend, was an opportunity the brothers could not pass up. They grew up on the beach in Montauk and felt that the iconic beach culture of Coney Island was the perfect fit. The store will feature a variety of Wampum products including shirts made here in New York and hats made in California. Wampum is excited to be a part of the rebuilding process of Coney Island after the devastating affects of Super Storm Sandy hit the area last fall. The opening of the Wampum store will increase the presence of small businesses on the fun filled boardwalk. The Wampum team will also be focusing their time and energy this summer on the area from which it all started, the Hamptons. The Wampum store in Bridgehampton, located at 2487 Main Street behind Helen Ficalora, was recently renovated and reopened with a brand new look for the season. There are also a number of Wampum popups in the works throughout the area including Montauk so check in on the website www.wampumny.com or follow on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter @wampumny for the latest updates.

terview Strong Boalt Designer In ackin By Jessica M

Amanda Boalt founded Strong Boalt in 2009, a line of men’s luxury swimwear featuring an imaginative and alluring assortment of seasonal prints inspired by salt water life in Florida and the Caribbean. She is the granddaughter of the legendary fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer and is following in her footsteps. Not only are her designs perfect for the Florida lifestyle, but they go great in the Hamptons as well. I spoke to Amanda about her own personal style, her take on fashion, her grandmothers influence and more. Where do you find inspiration for your line of swim trunks and boardshorts? I find inspiration from my everyday life, my friends and my family. Growing up in Florida provides for a remarkably active lifestyle and, with the Bahamas just a short boat ride away, I also get a lot of inspiration from my love of warm weather, beautiful tropical beaches and water. Having returned to Palm Beach a few years ago to found Strong Boalt, I can’t help but incorporate the colorful, sporty and yet classic architecture and ambiance of this timeless town, best captured in the works of such iconic photographers as Slim Aarons. Today, my favorite things continue to inspire me, including hot summer days, calm seas, lots of outdoor sports, island visits and distant travel. Generally living a fun, exploratory and healthy life. Describe your own personal style: I prefer a classic yet sporty and relaxed style. I appreciate classic things that have a twist and also luxury staples. I tend to buy pieces that are interesting or luxurious and comfortable, in part because it suits my personality but also the transition in daily events can lead anywhere. Ultimately I appreciate carefully put together but practical clothing that feels effortless. Describe what you would wear as a go-to Hamptons beach outfit: I usually wear simple Eres triangle bikinis. I usually wear a mans button down shirt as a cover up and some kind of hat to block the sun. I always wear a long gold necklace with lots of sentimental charms. Would you say that Palm Beach and the Hamptons have a similar style? Palm Beach and the Hamptons have more in common than

not. There is a significant population of both Floridians and New Yorkers that move between these towns and feels comfortable in both. I think this is in part due to the fact it’s a very active crowd who enjoys participating in everything with enthusiasm – both day and night. I also think there is a shared sense of style, which has certainly evolved among generations to a more casual attire but still manages to reflect its more formal roots. I also think this is apparent in everyone’s outlook, which also tends to be more relaxed. Although I suspect Floridians might have a slight edge over New Yorkers for this.

Describe your perfect summer day? In early summer the town of Palm Beach gets very quiet and we work on fulfilling summer orders and creating new prints for the upcoming season. The air is usually hot and the sea calm, and a brief trip on a small boat to Memory Rock in the Bahamas to spear Hog Snapper is a remarkably cathartic way to spend the day and conceptualize new prints. To consider ideas initiated by this stunning environment is complemented by evenings of open fires on beaches cooking the fresh catch under skies overwhelmed by stars.

How has your grandmother influenced your designs and your own personal style? She unequivocally influenced my work. She initially helped me with all of my designs, prints and colors. I grew up in the 80’s when Lilly was a ubiquitous brand among the faithful, with outrageous parties, outrageous personalities and, adorned in Lilly, outrageous wardrobes. It was her unique approach and gregarious personality that influenced my own style. While the style of Strong Boalt is more attuned to our time, I will continuously hear her voice stressing fun over everything else.

Favorite outdoor activities? Fishing, diving, spear fishing, paddle boarding, tennis, golf, biking, shooting... Who are some of your favorite designers? After working at Ralph [Lauren] for a few years, he will always be one of my favorites. I love prints, so Pucci is one of my absolute favorites. And of course the original vintage Lillys are always inspiring. Any favorite places to go when you are in the Hamptons? The walking dunes in Montauk, Round Swamp Farm, Sam’s Pizza in East Hampton, Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett.

Who would you most like to wear one of your designs? It would be great to see my line on hot topics Ryan Gosling or Bradley Cooper, but ultimately I wouldn’t mind seeing Will Farrell wearing my trunks this summer.

Where can we find Strong Boalt in The Hamptons? Scoop in NYC and East Hampton and Michelle Farmer in Bridgehampton.

Memorial Day weekend is here and rumor has it that the Hamptons are already sold out with house rentals and hotel rooms booked in advance a lot earlier than they normally are. This can only mean that this is going to be a record breaking summer! Every season brings something new and exciting and this year is no exception. One thing I am proud to announce is that I have partnered with Antonio Sabato Jr. to form Sabato/Davin Productions. Antonio is best known for his Calvin Klein Underwear campaign that ran in many national magazines and boasted a 90 foot billboard in Times Square. He was a regular on “General Hospital” as Jagger Cates and appeared in many movies and television shows. He currently has roles in many movies that are slated to be filmed this year but his newest venture is behind the camera. The movie Intikam is in pre-production right now and will be filmed in Istanbul where he will make his directorial debut. The good news for fans in New York is that they’ll be seeing a lot more of him out here as he will be filming two movies here on Long Island and one of them will be in the Hamptons. Antonio and I recently met up in New York City with Casting Director, Donna McKenna. Donna has been instrumental in casting many movies and we hope to bring some to the Hamptons including the Hampton’s International Film Festival. We got to meet a lot of the actors at the SOHO International Film Festival in April and if you missed it this year then make it a point to attend next year’s festival as they will be celebrating their fifth year! Sibyl Santiago is the Executive Director of the SIFFNYC and she is already taking submissions for next year! You can go to

Davin

www.sohofilmfest.com to submit your film. One of the films that were filmed on Long Island is Sebastien. It’s a psychological horror story that was written by Deborah Twiss who also directed the movie along with Louis Gonzalez and stars Eric Roberts, Cathy Moriarty, Tom Pelphrey, James McCaffrey and Harris Doran to name a few. Eric Roberts and Harris Doran are also in another movie called ’79 Parts which is currently being filmed in Brooklyn. Recently I got to interview some of the cast members including Johnny Solo, Lisa Regina, Justin Morck, Kresh Novakovic, Philip Willingham, Martin Ewens, Harris Doran and director Ari Taub. This movie is set in the 1970s and is even shot on film! A lot of the cast members have other projects in the works and you’ll hear more about those as we come into the summer months. You’ll also be able to see interviews on FameHampton’s Facebook page so check that out when you get a chance. Another thriller you’ll be able to see is Junction which was written and directed by Tony Glazer. I also got to interview some of the cast members from this movie including Summer Crockett Moore and Harris Doran who are two of the main characters and Tony himself. Neal Bledsoe is another main character who I’ve met but haven’t interviewed yet as he is currently filming the anticipated Ironside. All these actors that I had the opportunity to interview are very down to earth and are keeping busy with one movie after the next. Donna McKenna has strategically casted these movies roles (except for Junction) and has a knack for placing an actor in a role that is not a typical role they would play. This is great because it gives us a chance to see another side of the actor and challenges them to come out of their comfort zone. The Real Housewives of New York will be filming throughout the summer and local Countess LuAnn de Lesseps will not only be busy with that but also promoting her new line of outdoor dinnerware which comes in three vibrant colors and patterns. The Countess Collection made its debut on QVC on May 5 and can currently be purchased on www.QVC.com so make sure you get yours so you can entertain in style this summer! You can see there is a lot to look forward to this summer and you can catch my new show “FameHampton Presents…” every Sunday at 5 PM on Cablevision. If you have someone you want to submit for consideration for the show, you can email me at annemarie@famehampton.com. I hope everyone has a fantastic Memorial Day weekend!

I have so many exciting spa, beauty and wellness finds to share!

Skincare from the Sea There is a breakthrough in skin and spa care going on right now. Many skincare lines and spas are developing marine treatments on their menu of spa services and even creating skincare lines derived around sea and ocean life. I have been asked about the different products available that are purely derived from seaweed, algae, and sea salts. In other words, “Skincare from the Sea.” I have to be honest, there are only a handful of authentic products out there and even less that are pure marine organic. But mark my words, the health benefits from the sea are scientifically proven to cure illness. So consider mother earths largest and most vital element, water.

Are you up for the 90 Day Spa Water™ Challenge? Have you ever visited a spa or resort that has beautiful displays of ice water mixed with various fruits? I always seem to notice when my visiting guests keep coming back for more. They love it! (You love it, don’t you?) Don’t you just want to keep drinking it and even take that large glass vitrine home with you? Well, you can! I found Spa Water™, a spa business that emphasizes on one main goal through many services derived around water: “Inspiring America to establish a healthy hydration ritual – one sip at a time.” Water can be so boring to drink by itself, which is why Spa Water has a recipe book of the most gorgeous and easy-to-make spa water displays both by the jar and the glass. I personally entered the 90 day Spa Water™ challenge, committing myself to 75oz of Spa Water™ every day for 90 days. I did not have to give up on wine, cocktails or coffee. However, I felt so hydrated that I consumed less of those beverages and more water. With my personal experience, I found myself relieved of body aches and pains. No more headaches and I completely understood the feeling of being “hydrated.” It was not until my body was filled with water that I knew I had not been drinking enough of it. I would like to challenge YOU to the 90 day Spa Water™ challenge this month. Let’s all begin on Memorial Weekend . . . or you may join in at any time thereafter as every day is the same goal. If you’re just visiting the Hamptons for the weekend or entertaining guests, be sure to check your mobile device for a quick Spa Water™ Recipe App. View more about this challenge, the success stories shared, and the products for purchase at www.MySpaWater.com.

Mango Guacamole

i

By Anna Young Lombard

A recipe by Anna Young Lombardi, author of the Scrumptious Bites Happy Life blog. Visit www.scrumptiousbiteshappylife.com.

Guacamole and springtime go together like sangria and summer. This creamy dish is fabulous for many reasons, one of them being its versatility! I decided it would be fun to play around and chunk up this side even more while incorporating some juicy sweetness. Ingredients: 2-3 medium ripe Avocado’s, ½ of a cup - 1 cup of chopped yellow onion, ½ a cup of chopped cilantro, 1 large mango, 1 lime, salt and pepper (season to your liking).

together with the rest of your ingredients and the juice of one lime. Season guac with salt and pepper to your liking. Love garlic? Try a sprinkle of garlic salt.

Get It Cookin: Mash up your avocados depending on your preference. I like it a little chunky, in case you were wondering. Mix

Tips! Watching your carbohydrate in take? Try slicing up some fresh veggies! Cucumbers are a great substitute for chip.

BakedCStuffed Lobster Tail ipro By Chef Joe

Ingredients (serves 4) 4 2lb lobsters 2 tbsp Old Bay seasoning 1 bay leaf 3 lemon 1 c panko bread crumbs 2 egg yolks ½ onion ½ head of celery 1 c white wine ½ lb butter 2 tbsp thyme (picked) 2 tbsp tarragon (chopped) salt and pepper to taste

Method Begin by bringing a large pot of water to a boil. Add the bay leaf, Old Bay seasoning, salt, and lemon. This will be the cooking liquid for the lobsters. While that is coming up to temperature, you can start to fine dice the onion and celery. When celery and onion is ready, heat half of the butter in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Slowly cook the vegetables until they are translucent. Deglaze with the white wine and let it reduce for another five minutes over medium heat, or until the alcohol is cooked off. When it’s finished cooking set the onion and celery aside to cool while you tend to the lobsters. Cook the lobsters in the boiling seasoned water for four minutes. Be sure to have a large ice bath with ice and

water ready to cool the lobsters quickly after the four minutes is up. Once the lobsters have cooled you can break the tails off, then break off the claws. Reserve all the claw and knuckle meat to mix into the stuffing while carefully removing the tail. When the tail is removed, split it down the middle and remove the shell. To assemble the stuffing, mix together the cooked vegetables, egg yolks, breadcrumb, herbs and cooked knuckle and claw meat. Stuff each tail with an equal amount of filling and bake in a 425 degree oven for 35 minutes. While the lobsters are baking, warm the rest of the butter in a small sauce pot and skim off the white foam that rises to the top to clarify the butter. When the tails come out you can spoon a small bit of clarified butter over the top.
