PAY YOUR “FAIR SHARE” OR ELSE I’m writing this for my brother Joe and for my hundreds of wellmeaning Republican/Conservative friends who are sending me hundreds of emails saying the Presidential election was rigged. Yes, 99 percent of a district in Philadelphia came out and voted for Obama. Yes, Obama won 116 percent of another district in Ohio. It doesn’t matter. Romney was never even coming

close in Pennsylvania or Ohio. Get it through your thick heads: We lost . . . we lost . . . we lost . . . we lost. Live with it. It’s not unlike what happened to General Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Custer was West Point educated. His 700 men were well-armed, well-fed and welltrained. HAS YOUR HEATING, HOT WATER OR WELL SYSTEM EQUIPMENT BEEN EXPOSED TO WATER? Heating, Ventilation and Cooling (HVAC) equipment, such as a furnace, boiler or hot water heater, can be damaged extensively if it is exposed to water. The amount of damage will depend partly on the exposure and the amount of time the equipment remains under water. Often, the damage is so great that the only solution is replacement. This would be the time to consider energy efficient, cost saving, upgraded equipment.

and Cheyenne Indians, led by Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. The Indians were not trained and were poorly armed. But, there were many, many, many more Indians than there were soldiers in Custer’s army. Custer lost because he was outnumbered. So did we. My good Republican friends, we must face reality – there are more of them than there are of us. I only have one question. Who did the unemployed (8.9 percent of the country) vote for? It seems like an easy thing for Gallup or any of the other polling companies to find out. Why is it important? I believe that if I’m right, and if a majority of the unemployed voted for Obama, it means there has been a significant change in this country. No president has ever been reelected with unemployment this high, with the exception of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was coming out of a depression where half the country was unemployed. It means that the United States is now in the hands of the new majority which, besides the rankand-file Democrats/Liberals, consists of the young who have voted for Obama because they were promised free education, the old who voted for him because they were promised free medication, and those who feel put upon by the world who voted for him because he promised them free vindication. If it ended in “ion” he cleverly promised it to them and they voted for him. What does this mean for your future? Here’s a number that will make you flinch: 46.4 percent of U.S. households in 2011 didn’t pay federal taxes. Did you?

If you’re middle-class, if you and your spouse earn $150,000 a year, or if you’re single and earn $90,000 a year, or even $60,000 a year, what makes you think that the majority of the people who are unemployed or living on welfare or food stamps don’t resent you? You have what they want and you are living in a country where politicians will give them what you have in exchange for their votes. Take a look at the Black Friday pictures of the out-of-control crazies who were rioting to rip 70-inch television sets out of each other’s hands. Did you see those fat ladies who went berserk over see-through bras and nightgowns at Victoria’s Secret? Do you wonder, as I do, if all those 300-pound women pushing and shoving each other on Black Friday have jobs? If they all pay taxes? If those grossly overweight people got that hideously fat as a result of a food stamp program that sadly grew dramatically even as we were being told by the Obama team that the economy was getting better? Did you ever wonder if the economy is getting better, why did so many more people have to go on food stamps? What makes you think that you will never be asked to pay your “fair share,” no matter how little you earn? Is unemployment a political chip? Think of the bakers’ unions, who put 18,500 of their members out of work as Twinkies, Wonder Bread, Ring Dings and Yodels, among others, disappeared off the shelves. Hostess Brands could not afford to meet the union demands and went out of business. Is it time for another Obama “Chrysler-style” bailout? In this, the Twinkie bailout, Obama will declare the Hostess company to be vital to the country. The government will then buy Hostess and hand it over to the unions. The result? All of the stoners and sugar-addicted diabetic fat people will live happily ever after and sign petitions to flaunt the law so that Obama can run again in 2016. DID I DEPRESS YOU? HERE’S A JOKE: The Real Bin Laden Story: Osama Bin Laden was living with three wives in one compound and never left the house for five years. It is now believed he called the Navy Seals himself.

Party Time As Matriarch Hits 100

By Rick Murphy

When Marjorie Cummings was born, William Howard Taft was President, Annie Oakley was alive, and World War I hadn’t begun yet. She’s endured seven wars, has seen 16 Presidents come and go, and seen the unthinkable – a man on the moon. After all, commercial airplanes didn’t even exist in 1912. How’s the Noyac matriarch doing these days? Just fine, thank you. In fact, she was the life of the party when her family gathered on November 11 -- some from as far away as China -- to pay homage to Marjorie Cummings Byrnes in honor of her 100th birthday. To say she is sharp as a tack is an understatement. “She watches ‘Jeopardy’ every night. She does the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle,” noted Margie ByrnesMeighan, her daughter. “She still plays bridge.” About 100 people gathered at St. Andrews Parish Center for the event. “Mom declined to use her wheelchair . . . she walked up the steps to the church with her walker.” In 1956 Marge came with her husband Jim Byrnes and their four children to Sag Harbor as summer residents. They built their own home in Northampton Colony in 1964 and eventually retired there in 1976.

“Her father’s family left England in the early 1600s and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to New England. Her mother’s family left Germany in the middle 1800s for New Orleans, sailed up the Mississippi to Illinois, and then traveled by land to a farming community in Minnesota,” Rosemary Byrnes-Doyle, another daughter, related. Marge was born in Viking, North Dakota, where her father was a railroad station master, started school in Minneapolis and then moved to Cassadega, Chautauqua County in western New York on Lake Erie where her paternal grandparents lived. After she graduated from high school in nearby Fredonia, N.Y., in the middle of the Great Depression, she followed her ancestors by taking a risk and hopped a bus for the 500mile ride to New York City where she entered St. John’s Nursing School in Queens. She was working as a registered nurse at Physician’s Hospital in Jackson Heights when she met Jim Byrnes, whom she married in 1938.

Shortly after World War II ended, Marge and Jim moved to Pelham Manor, New York, where they raised their four children and enjoyed summers in Sag Harbor. The youngest of their four children, Margie Meighan, lives in North

Haven. Marge has been there ever since (her husband passed in 2004). Doyle said the family attributes her mother’s longevity “to her smile, her willingness to take a risk and hop a bus, and staying in her own home with frequent visits by her four children, 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.” “It’s been a blessing,” Meighan said of her mother’s long life. “She’s good. She loves her vodka martini, she has an iPad, and she Skypes with my sister, who lives in China.” One of Marge’s serious ailments  

of note was a heart attack she suffered 11 years ago, when she was taking care of her ill husband. Meighan, the manager of the East Hampton branch of Bridgehampton National Bank, recalled, “She called me at the bank, which she hardly ever does. She said, ‘I’m having a heart attack. Find someone to take care of your father and call an ambulance.’” When the ambulance arrived she was calmly sitting in her vestibule with all of her medical records, waiting to go to

Slow and easy may win the race for the tortoise in Aesop’s Fable, but when the weather -- and the water -- turns cold, it can be fatal for real live sea turtles. On Sunday staff from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation (RFMRP) recovered three cold- stunned sea turtles. According to Rescue Program Director Kim Durham, two juvenile Green Sea Turtles were rescued in Bridgehampton and Amagansett. A third, a Kemp’s Ridley, was recovered in Glen Cove. On November 20, still another turtle was discovered and rescued f r om G ar d in er ’s Ba y i n E a st Hampton. Less than a foot long, the small, six-pound Atlantic Green Sea Turtle was observed by residents who were walking the beach at Louse Point. It was initially seen in tidal waters, Durham reported, and was, at that point, the second coldstunned turtle treated by RFMRP. A physical exam revealed the little guy’s (or gal’s) body temperature was 11 degrees Celsius, when 23 degrees is the norm. Treatment for hypothermia was commenced and as of last week, the turtle’s condition was described as “guarded.” “The ability to intervene and save this turtle’s life is due entirely to the actions taken by the beach walkers who responded to the turtle and called our hotline immediately for instructions. The deaths of these animals are preventable if they are reported,” said Durham. The RFMRP rescue program is gearing up for a busy winter and hoping communities will get involved. They’re asking for volunteers to patrol area beaches and report any sea turtles found to the 24-hour rescue hotline (631-3699829) right away. “Even if these animals appear dead,” Durham said, “Proper emergency care could save their lives.” People who find cold-stunned turtles shouldn’t try to warm them up, though, as it’s a delicately timed procedure. Warming them too quickly can lead to shock. Cold-stunning, also known as hypothermia, is a condition that threatens the lives of many sea turtles each year. A dramatic and sudden decrease in water temperature renders the animals unable to move. Because sea turtles are cold-blooded reptiles, they lack the ability to regulate their own body temperatures. Instead, their environment, in this case the ocean or bay, serves as the regulator. When the water temperature

reaches 50 degrees, Durham explained, sea turtles begin to succumb to cold-stunning. Seemingly paralyzed by the frigid waters, they eventually stop eating and swimming and are soon at the mercy of wave and tidal action. They can’t escape the cold water and migrate to warmer climes. When stunned, they can appear dead even when they’re still alive. Once they wash up on beaches, it’s a race against time to rescue them.

Kind. Generous. A sweet spirit. Expressions of that ilk dotted the pages of Facebook last weekend, as news of the death of Lisa de Kooning spread. The only child of the man heralded as one of the most important artists of the 20th century died in the Virgin Islands Friday, where her family had a home on St. John. The cause of death has not been officially determined, but was rumored to be a fall. Born on January 29, 1956 in New York, Johanna Liesbeth de Kooning was the daughter of Willem de Kooning and the illustrator Joan Ward. Known as Lisa, she grew up in Manhattan and Springs, where she maintained a home and

stewardship over her father’s famed studio off Woodbine Drive. With Christian Villeneuve, she had three daughters, Isabel, Emma, and Lucy. Growing up the child of an artist is “tough,” recalled Mike Solomon, son of the influential abstract artist Syd Solomon. Solomon’s family was part of the same circle of artists as the de Koonings, and he remembered meeting Lisa when both were quite small. “I remember the first time I saw her, we were about six. She was a real wild spirit,“ Solomon said affectionately. In later years, that wildness carried forth, but as she matured, Solomon said, he was pleased she established her family and had children, who became a focal point of her life. Describing life as an artist’s child -- “I wouldn’t wish it on anybody” -- Solomon said, “That she managed to stay human, and quite kind is pretty amazing. I thought it was heroic for her to get married and have children. But she was really into it and a really good mother. I was proud of her for doing what she did.” Very active at Springs School, Ms. de Kooning was additionally altruistic. According to Sue Ellen O’Connor, a veteran Springs educator, “Lisa contributed a tree in honor of her father to the school. She often invited classes to tour her father’s studio and conducted guided tours for the students. She led a ceramics class of one of her daughter’s classes at the studio as a field trip. She donated prints of books to the library. She participated in a film her daughter Lucy made when she was in fifth grade: “Portrait of My Grandfather” by Lucy. Family Fundraiser Saturday By Kitty Merrill

According to organizers Kate Ganga Syfert and Megan Collins Ganga’s event posting on Facebook, Bob Orr and his wife Donna have always stepped up when help was needed, serving as active members of a variety of civic organizations. Now they need the community’s help. A lifelong local resident, Bob Orr has been diagnosed with osteomyelitis, an infection affecting the bones of his foot, which has caused him to have a partial amputation and may require further surgery. After weeks in Stony Brook Hospital, he has just returned home but has to maintain a course of intravenous antibiotics, the pair reported. Further tests are

required to define the cause of circulation problems that may have contributed to his condition. Orr is not covered by health insurance and is now unable to work and the family is struggling. A fundraiser to help the family will be held at the American Legion in Amagansett this Saturday night

from 7 to 11 PM. For a suggested donation of $20, enjoy light fare, a cash bar, Chinese auction and raffles. Even if you don’t know the Orrs the evening promises to be a treat for music lovers. The very popular local Blue Collar Band takes center stage with a newly configured

RICK’S SPACE Leaf Me Alone

I hate this time of the year. More specifically, I hate leaves — dead ones — and I hate the fact that some people don’t think they are an attractive addition to their yards. Take Karen (please) — she thinks the leaves need to be raked and carted away. She thinks a Saturday afternoon in the yard will be a healthy activity for us — she will direct, and I will do the actual labor. I agree that most people feel rejuvenated doing yard work on a brisk, sunny afternoon. They want to get out in the fresh air and enjoy Mother Nature. Jeez, I used to love to do that, because there is nothing like working yourself into a sweaty lather, blood rushing to your face, sweat pouring out of every pore until your clothes are drenched with moisture. Yeah, that sure is fun. Unfortunately for me, I have a bad back. I need to rest during the winter

if I’m to be productive during the summer. Winter is heaven for me, especially during football season. Karen used to say football was like a drug to me, until I pointed out drugs are like a drug to me. The only other chore that comes up with any regularity during the season is shoveling snow. Unfortunately, I can’t shovel snow because I have a bad back. Every time it snows Karen rushes outside, in scarves and coats and gloves galore, straining her tiny body to remove the mountains of snow blocking our walkway and driveway lest I attempt to do it and hurt myself. That’s because I’m quick to point out should my back go out, I will be laid up for months, I will lose my job, we’ll lose our house, they’ll take back our trucks, and we’ll end up living in a tent which I won’t be able to help pitch because my back will hurt too much.

Karen loves to dance. When I was courting her I used to endure her passion but I eventually had to stop -my back, you know. The truth is, I hate dancing, especially at weddings. There seems to be a universal practice at weddings, no matter what culture or country, that as the party progresses, drunk and drunker people feel compelled to make complete fools of themselves by doing the same asinine dances. You know the ones: the YMCA, when you have to spell out the letters with your arms, the Macarena, and of course the bunny hop thing where-in lines of people hop around the room holding on to each other’s waist from behind like a gaggle of freakazoids. There’s always the serious woman who wants to make all the right moves (and probably practices at home), there’s always the grandma who gets all confused, there’s always a little snot-nosed kid trying to upstage everyone by running under your legs. Everyone is laughing hysterically and acting like they are having fun or something (if in fact making the letter “Y” with your arms is funny) and no one minds when you almost trip on little Johnny (I used to try to step on his face). Nowadays when we go to a wedding I sit back with a cocktail, which is good for my back, and smirk. My little excuse comes in handy around the office too. We have a

water cooler, which I use all day long, but I’ve never actually picked up one of those giant bottles and loaded it into the cooler. Instead, I watch interns who weigh about 82 pounds labor under the crushing load. Do I feel guilty? Not at all. I wish they would come over to the house and rake the leaves. There is some strange duality that exists about leaves. On one hand, we rake, we blow, we bag, we do anything to get rid of them. On the other hand, thousands of people make the pilgrimage to New England every year to see the foliage, to gaze at the multi-color beauty created by Mother Nature. My old girlfriend made me go to Maine once and it was the worst vacation of my life. Honestly, how many dead leaves do we need to gaze upon before we’ve had our fill? I can lie on the couch and see them flutter past the window, and that’s good enough for me. Either Karen is going to have to come to grips with the leaves in the yard or I will have to pay someone to get rid of them, as much as I’d like to do it myself. It’s just that I have a bad back. The truth is I hate to get out of bed in the morning. I feel lethargic all the time. For a long time I thought I was lazy, but now I realize the horrible truth. I have Lyme disease. Think I’ll take a long nap.

EDITORIAL A Bad Idea A proposal being bandied about in Washington DC to eliminate mortgage interest deductions would be devastating to the East End real estate market should it be adopted. The country is grappling with a huge budget deficit that literally grows daily. Democrats are pointing out that Mitt Romney suggested income tax deductions be capped at a certain percentage of income, and are using his idea as an impetus to open the discussion about eliminating mortgage interests deductions. Typically, though, the Democrats are twisting things around. As Romney correctly pointed out, capping income tax deductions is akin to raising taxes -- the saved money flows into the treasury. Both plans would primarily affect the wealthy. But Romney’s plan wouldn’t mandate what deductions would be affected -- that would be up to the individual taxpayer. For example, if mortgage interest were not an allowable deduction, wealthy investors who buy real estate and take mortgages to avail themselves of the tax benefit would still be able to pay cash. Middle class homebuyers need mortgages to afford a home, and rely on the mortgage tax deduction to make ends meet. In other words,

Independent VOICES

Always Oppressive Dear Editor, Obama believes that government has the answers to almost everything. History has shown otherwise. In fact, allowing government to solve the people’s problems has, historically, been bad news for liberty and freedom. That perspective is probably why Thomas Jefferson, one of our freedom loving Founding Fathers, said, “I own that I am not a friend to a very energetic government, it is always oppressive.” Did you notice that Jefferson said that a very energetic government is always oppressive? Ergo, a vote for Obama is a vote for more oppression. It is why, fair reader, I do not understand why any true

American would vote for him. I wrote the first two paragraphs before the election. So, now, three weeks later, I will admit that I remain shell shocked because I had become hopeful of a different outcome. And because I love America so much for the freedom she has given to me, I am more discouraged than ever about her future because Obama believes in a “very energetic government.” BILL JONES

Skirted Around Dear Mr. Murphy, I have a few more observations about the last election. I was struck by the accuracy of The Independent’s political analysis, yet none of the candidates endorsed were elected. This may have been so because, even though The Independent accurately described the issues, both parties appear to have skirted around the solutions. For example, both parties

despite the stereotypical belief that this administration is targeting the wealthy as a means of cutting the deficit, eliminating the mortgage interest deduction would have the opposite affect -- it is clearly aimed at the middle class. The real estate market has been stagnant for five years, despite record-low mortgage rates. The reason is twofold: banks are reluctant to give out mortgages, and would-be buyers are afraid they will lose their jobs unless the economy improves, making them less likely to take the plunge into home ownership. A healthy real estate market is critical to the East End economy. Yes, banks need to loosen the purse strings, but the government needs to do more: encourage home ownership, especially for first time buyers. To do that incentives may be needed, but certainly the ability of a homeowner to deduct the interest on his or her mortgage is crucial. Locally, this should be a bi-partisan issue. If taxes must be raised, so be it: the people voted for a platform that targets the rich, and the people have spoken. Eliminating the mortgage interest deduction would be a slap in the face for those who thought they voted for a level playing field -- the move clearly affects the working class.

endorsed the Wall Street bailouts with Democrats promising a major overhaul of the flawed financial system that led to the economic meltdown. The Democrats didn’t really keep that promise, but then Republicans didn’t demand that the flaws be corrected either. As for the Bishop/Altschuler race, Mr. Bishop, an avowed environmentalist, seemed to abandon those principals for the type of “big money” that Democrats allege gravitates to Republicans. On the other hand, Mr. Altschuler didn’t demand that the environment, which happens to be important to the East End economy, be protected. So who to vote for? Two other issues emerged that I believe gave Democrats the edge: free speech and women’s rights. Some Republicans and Democrats suggested that malicious postings on the Internet be censored. However, while most users abhor nasty commentary, as pointed out in several Independent editorials, most (particularly

younger tech-savvy voters) don’t want their usage censored. President Obama defended free speech, the point being free speech should not be interpreted to mean support of disgraceful speech. However, none of the local Democrats followed President Obama’s lead on this issue. As for women’s issues, the Republican Party gives the appearance of having moved to the fringe but that doesn’t mean that a woman will get elected simply because she’s a woman. Most of the women who won Senate races did so based on reputations for standing tough on issues discussed by The Independent such as abuses by the financial industry and the need for safety nets for American workers. In short, I believe many of these issues could have been embraced in a different context at the local level by Bridget Fleming

rabbits. She’d drive the kids around in that wagon, with the pony.” Her love of animals was evident in her own art. In 2009 she showed, reportedly for the first time publicly, sculptures of animals cast in bronze. One report of the opening at Tripoli Gallery of Contemporary Art in Southampton noted she brought her dog and a parrot named Lulu to the event. The parrot rested on Lisa’s arm, or atop one of the sculptures. It’s very difficult to be the offspring of a famous artist and to make art, Solomon recalled. But, he said, “She made it her own and the content was very different from Bill’s.” Solomon characterized Ms. de Kooning’s sculptures as “terrific.” Willem de Kooning produced well over a thousand works over the course of his decades-long career. Many of them are still in his daughter’s collection in a trust she established. A second foundation in his name also preserves his legacy. Remembered by friends for her sweet and kind nature, -- society photographer Barry Gordin recalled: “Lisa was always so much fun to be with and a shining light on our social circuit, keeping her fathers legacy alive and vibrant. Her presence will be dearly missed,” -- she will also be remembered for extensive philanthropic efforts. A memorial crafted by the Johanna Liesbeth de Kooning Trust this week notes the wide range of causes she supported. “The causes closest to her heart were art, children and animals, raising money for and donating to Boys and Girls Harbor, Art for Animals, the Isamu Noguchi Foundation, and local East End charities and art programs, such as the East Hampton Day Care Center, Ladies Village Improvement Society, Springs Fire Department, Longhouse Reserve and Robert Wilson’s Byrd Hoffman Water Mill Foundation. “In recent years, after establishing a home in St. John, she became active in its local causes, contributing to the Virgin Islands National Park and to Team River

Runner’s Wounded Veterans USVI program. Like her father, however, she did not confine her generosity to established charities. Ms. de Kooning will be remembered not only for her commitments to the arts and her local communities, but for her spontaneous expressions of good will and kindness toward those she encountered in daily life.” And it was spontaneity evident even in childhood. Said O’Connor, who knew her since she was just five years old and took riding lessons from her, “Lisa often told the story that when she was attending Springs herself, she brought her pony Freddy on “show and tell” day. She walked him up the front steps and into the classroom. She was an original.” The funeral service will be private. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

the hospital. Marge is an avid reader -- she wears reading glasses when she does -- and has been to China for a couple of visits. She arises about 8 AM, goes to bed around 10 PM, and eats “pretty much everything,” said Meighan, including fruit and cereal for breakfast. She was a social cigarette smoker back in the day but kicked the habit years ago. The celebration began with 11:30 AM Mass at St. Andrew’s Church in Sag Harbor. Immediately following the Mass guests gathered at St. Andrew’s Parish Center. The Center was decorated with 100 balloons and each table was adorned with a bouquet of -- not flowers, but photos of Marge and her family and friends over the years. Each person at the party was represented in one or more of the photographs. Guests dined on butternut squash soup, filet mignon, ham and much more. Marge’s granddaughter brought a gorgeous cake down from Connecticut. Afterwards, the party continued at the old homestead. “Somebody asked me if mom needed to take a nap,” Meighan said. “I answered, ‘No, Mom never takes a nap.’”

Phillips Avenue Elementary More than 750 people from the community attended a pancake breakfast hosted by the administration, teachers and staff at Phillips Avenue recently. Phillips Avenue teachers and staff made breakfast, and members of the Riverhead administration helped with the serving. “It’s really nice to see the whole community come out,” Riverhead Schools Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Lois Etzel said, as she served pancakes and sausages to Phillips Avenue children and their families. P h i l l i p s Av e n u e P r i n c i p a l Debra Rodgers said she was very pleased by the turnout for this annual event; almost double the amount that attended last year’s pre-Thanksgiving breakfast. “This is just one event,” shared Ms. Rodgers, “that helps reinforce the importance of community in the educational process, and is also the school’s way of thanking the Phillips Avenue community for their involvement.

In a short presentation, Ms. Rodgers offered her own note of “thanksgiving” to those businesses and organizations in the community who helped sponsor the breakfast, and encouraged everyone to look for those things in their lives that they can be thankful for at this time of the year.

Riverhead Earns County Title, Wants More

for a playoff berth. And then the team took off. Sunday the locals scored their sixth straight win, and it was a big win — the Suffolk County Division II title was on the line. The Waves pummeled North Babylon 52-20 at Stony Brook University to earn a berth in the Long Island Championship Game this Saturday. Riverhead’s potent, two-pronged offense is the mighty beast that feeds the team. During the winning streak tailback Jeremiah Cheatom anchored the ground game for Leif Shay’s charges – a powerful runner with breakaway speed, Cheatom proved he could take over a game unless defenses focused on him. And therein is the conundrum Riverhead’s opponents faced – concentrate on the run, and the Blue Waves unleash a potent air attack. On this day, quarterback Ryan Blitzer did precisely that, and the air attack proved fatal to North Babylon’s title hopes. The Bulldogs struck first Sunday on a gorgeous 21-yard run by Melijah Purvis, and then Blitzer took over. He hit his go-to receiver, Quinn Funn from 21 yards out. The extra point, a kick by Devrim Kucuk, knotted the core at seven. Later in the first stanza Funn returned a fumble for another touchdown. As it turned out, though, he was just warming up. Blitzer found Jeffrey Pittman on a 60 yarder in the second quarter, and the quarterback ran for a score from

the one-yard line after connecting with Funn on a 73-yarder. At halftime the locals held a 28-14 lead. Once again Blitzer looked to Funn in the third quarter, and the pair hooked up on yet another scoring strike, from 29 yards. The pair was to do it again in the fourth, this time from six yards out. Blitzer was on fire throughout; completing 13 of 19 for a whopping 291 yards and four TDs. Funn grabbed seven, good for 153 yards, and Pittman tallied five receptions good for 128 yards. Cheatom did his part as well, picking up 95 yards on 22 carries. The Waves’ underrated defense, meanwhile, stiffened after the first quarter and put the clamps on Purvis and company. North Babylon finished with an 8-3 mark. “The victory was not only a triumph for our football team, but also for all of Riverhead,” Superintendent of Schools Nancy Carney said. “It was so gratifying to see so many parents, students and community members in the stands Sunday night cheering our team on. I offer my congratulations to Coach Shay, his staff and his players for their dedication, hard work and talent on and off the field. These fine student athletes and the people who support them represent what is so great about Riverhead!” The Blue Waves captured the Long Island Class II Championship with a 42-6 win over Elmont High School. The RHS Blue Waves (9-2) will battle Garden City (10-1) on Saturday. For the second time in five years, Riverhead has a chance to take home the LI Championship. In 2008, Riverhead became the first team in Long Island history to finish with a 12-0 record. Garden City, 10-1, upended Wantagh 21-17 Sunday to win the Nassau County Division II Championship. Quarterback Roddy Roche threw for two scores for the winners. Sayville overwhelmed Westhampton to take the Suffolk III title. The undefeated Golden Flashes, defending Long Island champs, were simply too much for the overmatched locals, with quarterback John Haggard doing the brunt of the damage on the ground, gaining 118 yards and scoring three times. Jack Murphy recorded the Hurricanes only score on a 30-yard fourth quarter run.

Jets Fans Unthankful Holiday

As we settled in for Thanksgiving across the East End last week, Jets fans were probably feeling less grateful than others. Just two years ago, their team had one of the top coaches in the NFL, along with a rising star at quarterback. Twenty-four months later, Gang Green is a squad with no identity; more questions than answers, and frankly, not much talent. Just 10 days ago the Jets got a 27-13 win over the St. Louis Rams. It was a glimpse of what the Jets were in 2009 and 2010. They fed off their defense and running game and QB Mark Sanchez only threw the ball 20 times. Sanchez has always been far more effective when he’s not asked to throw 30 or more times per game. Then last week, on Thanksgiving night, it was back to the same old Jets in a 49-19 blow-out at the hands of the New England Patriots. If there was ever a doubt heading into that game, it’s now clear that the Jets are far from serious contenders. But what happened in front of the entire country last week might be the best thing for the fan base. It was an incredibly embarrassing moment for owner Woody Johnson and should lead to changes being made. They are 4-10 last 14 games, dating back to last season. The last time the Jets beat a team with a winning record was October 23, 2011 (the San Diego Chargers). It’s an incredible regression, considering a fairly similar core. The franchise’s failure to build on excellent back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010 shouldn’t fall solely on the players’ backs. Management must take ownership of the setbacks. From owner Woody Johnson, president Neil Glat, GM Mike Tannenbaum, and head coach Rex Ryan, the Jets rested on their laurels following two AFC Championship games. As we’ve seen in the NFL, going worst to first, or first to worst, is all

too common. For the past nine years, at least one team has gone from a last place finish to a division title within a year. The Jets never made the necessary changes and are now paying the price. Don’t let their decision makers convince you that the loss of Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes was the driving factor behind their ineptness. New York’s aging defense, lack of wide receivers, and sub-par running backs for a “ground and pound” team has made the Jets a below average squad. And now for a few words on the

www.indyeastend.com

most controversial player on the team. The trade for Tim Tebow was the ultimate sign that the front office was leading the franchise in the wrong direction. Logistically, it never made sense. And since the start of the season, it’s clear the coaching staff never had a strategy to use Tebow’s strengths for the benefit of the team. Tebow didn’t even receive a snap during the Patriot disaster; the coaching staff blamed his bruised ribs. The result has been to undermine Sanchez, add uncertainty and sap momentum from the offense. So, now we’re seeing the repercussions, with several unnamed players questioning the back up’s ability, using words like “terrible” to describe his play. An example of the fall out . . . Rex Ryan’s press conference last week lasted 22 minutes, during which Ryan received no questions about the St. Louis

29

Rams. It was all Tebow. This is the circus Johnson and Tannenbaum brought to town. There’s nowhere to pass the buck. Jets fans had their day of thanks ruined by a pathetic performance on one of the biggest stages. The Jets may be well served to look to their rivals for a few pointers. No team has adjusted better, from year to year, then Bill Belichick’s Patriots. He’s constantly shuffling pieces around, getting younger, and staying ahead of the curve. As usual, the Jets, Bills (both 4-7), and Dolphins (5-6) are all chasing the Patriots (8-3). A surprising night on Thanksgiving may have saved their season, as well as several jobs. Instead, Jets fans can put an early Christmas bow on their 2012 season. Pete is a lifelong Montauk resident and former sports talk host at 88.7FM WEER. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9. Ever y year, RFMRP solicits volunteers to patrol area beaches searching for endangered and threatened species. anywhere on the beach from the dune to the water line and even buried beneath dried seaweed. Three species are most likely to be found in this region. They are the Green Turtle, which has a small head and a brown, oval-shaped shell, the Kemp’s Ridley, which has a heart-shaped shell and a large head, and the Loggerhead, which also has an oval shaped shell and a very large head. According to the Sea Turtle Conservancy website, “The ability of a sea turtle to migrate hundreds (and occasionally thousands) of miles from its feeding ground to its nesting beach is one of the most remarkable acts in the animal kingdom. That adult females return faithfully to nest on the very beach where they were born makes the feat even more amazing. “Research into where and how sea turtles migrate has been a focus of scientists for decades. The information collected is vital to the development of conservation strategies for the species. We now know that sea turtles undergo migration throughout their lives, beginning with the first frenzied swim as a hatchling.” kmerrill@indyeastend.com
