Exclusive Coverage of Mitt Romney’s Visit

Republican Presidential Candidate Sweeps In, Cashes Out

their intentions to “take action to non-violently disrupt the fundraiser at David Koch’s shorefront estate located at 880 Meadow Lane in Southampton.” The Secret Service and State Police apparently had another idea – they cordoned off Meadow Lane and only let residents and ticket holders to the events through. “The State Police told me Friday they were going to shut it down,” Epley related. Lisa Oldendorp of MoveOn.org, a retired teacher, was on one of the busses that shipped demonstrators CONTINUED ON PAGE 41.

He came, he saw, he filled his coffers. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made a one-day visit to the Hamptons Sunday and left with millions of dollars – not bad for one day’s work. One thing is for certain – the chance to rub shoulders with the personable candidate was the hottest ticket of the summer. A coalition of groups planning on protesting Romney’s visit to David Koch’s Meadow Lane estate in Southampton Village didn’t get very far - New York State Police closed the road while Secret Service agents manned the beach and the Coast Guard controlled the water. Earlier in the day Romney enjoyed lunch at Ron Perleman’s East Hampton Village estate dubbed The Creeks, and then headed west to Southampton for a fundraiser at Cliff Sobel’s estate – Sobel, who served as U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands and later Brazil from 2001 to 2009, also lives on Meadow Lane. Though no figures were released by his camp, published estimates of Romney’s weekend haul were in the $3 to 4 million range. Guests at the three events were treated to an informed candidate who by all accounts energized the party faithful. “Romney was at his best,” said Andy Sabin, a co-organizer of the event at The Creeks. ”He was very down to earth, he mingled with everyone. He talked about specifics and went over a detailed five point plan. He’s very concerned about poor people and education.” Tickets to the Koch event went for $50,000 a pop, yet there was a procession of huge SUVs and ultra-luxurious sedans lined up at checkpoints at Meadow Lane and at Koch’s residence, headed for the event. The protestors numbered about 200 but were kept a healthy distance away from the parties. “They staged at Cooper’s Beach. They wanted to march to Koch’s house,” Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley said of the protestors. “They didn’t realize it was a mile up the beach.” Meanwhile, Romney’s vehicle slipped right by without being noticed. When the protestors finally got to Koch’s, “they couldn’t see the party.” By the time the marchers – sweaty and hot – finally

Protesters were kept away from the presidential candidate.

David Fink said he was sailing on Georgica Pond with a friend when an East Hampton Village sergeant, in a motor boat, rammed them, boarded their tiny 12.5 foot craft, roughed them up, and ultimately arrested them. The police say the sailboat rammed the police craft and that Fink resisted arrest – that he jumped into the water and swam to the estate of Ron Perleman – where Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was attending a fundraiser. What he didn’t know was the moment he dove into the water it triggered a Secret Service High Alert. SS Agents and private security personnel at Perelman’s intercepted Fink at the shore and arrested him. According to the East Hampton Village Police report Fink and Simon V. Kinsella, both of whom live on Main Street in Wainscott, crossed a police “line” near the shore of The Creeks and were intercepted by an East Hampton Town Marine Patrol officer and Sergeant Jeffrey Erickson of the East Hampton Village Police, who were in a motorized marine patrol boat. “The two men attempted to cross the line and struck a police boat,” police said. Then Fink jumped overboard. Both men were charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. CONTINUED ON PAGE 41.

EVEN THEN, I KNEW Playing The “Brown Skin” Card (FROM JERRY’S INK 2008) So I wrote what I thought was an amusing column about my so-called obsession with Barack Obama, and a person named C. Alexander Brown wrote a letter to this newspaper which started like this: “So Jerry Della Femina would like to know why he’s so obsessed with Barack Obama. The answer is because like too many Americans he is locked into the belief that skin color is an important human factor.” What bull. I’ve had it up to here with Barack Obama and his fans calling up the race card and the skin color card every time someone makes fun of him as a candidate or believes that the Presidency is not an affirmative action position. The fact is many Democrats

(including the Clintons and their followers) believe that Obama is a lightweight with lightweight ideas and the only thing he has going for him is the color of his skin. Geraldine Ferraro was right. As for me, I believe it would be wonderful to have a person of color as our President, just not this person of color. All that Barack Obama has is an eloquent voice and a speechmaking ability that makes him sound like a combination of Mario Cuomo, John Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln. As for my obsession with a Presidential candidate’s skin, Mr. Brown, you sure hit the nail on the head this time. Now I guess I’d better confess I didn’t vote for John Kerry

because of his skin color – hated all that pale white skin with that sort of ghoulish olive green cast. Ugh! And Al Gore – hell, I didn’t vote for him because of his skin color. It was oh so white, and there was just so, so much of it. And Bill Clinton’s skin made me nuts. No wonder he screwed around. He heard that that was the only way to get rid of those pimples and blotches on his face. Jimmy Carter’s skin really turned me off with all those freckles and those little pink bumps. Now even someone as obsessed with

IN THE NEWS

skin color as C. Alexander Brown might see a pattern emerging here – all those folks whose skin color I have rejected are Democrats. So C. Alexander Brown, it’s not the color of Barack Obama’s skin I reject, it’s the color of Barack Obama’s politics – pink to red – that I reject. In the interest of fairness I have to confess the only Republican candidate I wouldn’t have voted for was Abraham Lincoln. His face was covered with warts. He looked like he had sex with a frog. And that’s where I draw the line.

The “Obama: Now You Don’t” Test (FROM JERRY’S INK 2008) So far I’ve counted six new Barack Obamas just this week. There’s Obama the liberal . . . Obama the middle-of-the-road candidate . . . Obama the independent . . . Obama the conservative . . . Obama the pacifist . . . Obama the warrior. Democrats, I’ll bet you thought you had Barack the liberal on your side last week. WRONG! Even though he had long opposed giving legal immunity to the phone companies that took part in the N.S.A.’s wiretapping program, even threatening a filibuster during his run for the nomination. But on Wednesday, he was on my team as

he ended up voting for the bill that will keep us all safe and secure. Why he was ever against it is a mystery to me. This is brilliant. Barack Obama has boxed John McCain (Mitt Romney) into a corner. There is no position that McCain (Romney) can take that Barack hasn’t already staked out. This is not “can do” politics, this is “me too” politics. He’s for and against everything at the same time. The man’s a genius, a political chameleon. He’s a dyslectic Ronald Reagan. A teflon candidate. He does not stick to anything.

“I can no more disown him [Ed: Rev. Wright] than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.” Poof, just like that, Obama threw his poor old grandma under the bus. Let’s face it. What Obama really meant with his angry tirade (Ed: in a speech to wealthy supporters in San Francisco against poor people of religion who own guns) was that poor, small-town people in this country are bitter because he isn’t President yet and they haven’t seen the wonderful change he will bring to each and every one of our lives. Heck, when we elect Barack Obama President he will, in the spirit of George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, and Nancy Pelosi, change each and every one of our lives. So a small town like Scranton,

Pennsylvania, will, the day after Obama is inaugurated, change. The rust in their old abandoned factories will disappear and the steel mills will fire up and clean safe smoke will billow into the air. Medicine and health care will be free and the only people paying income tax will be those horrible rich people who own the steel mills in the first place. The government will see to it that everyone will be able to pay his or her mortgage, and the economy will soar. Gasoline will cost $1.50 a gallon and it will be plentiful coming from . . . er . . . er . . . somewhere. We will abandon Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Israel. Then Hamas and Al Qaeda will tip their towels and turbans to us and we will have peace. And then those bitter people in those small towns all over America will smile and be happy and they will throw down their guns, give up hunting and sleep late on Sundays because there is no need to have religion when we have Obama. A Beach Music Ban? By Kitty Merrill

There’s a feud festering along the shore. Tower No Help, Opponents Say By Kitty Merrill

Anger, betrayal, suspicion, and disappointment were the emotions in the air. Last Thursday night, a small contingent of airport noise abatement advocates appeared before the East Hampton Town Board. Their complaint? The new air traffic control tower erected at the East Hampton Airport has done nothing to mitigate noise. They held signs that read “Duped into airport expansion,” and “$1 million control tower, no noise mitigation power.” The first speaker to take the podium was Susan McGraw, who offered impassioned oratory and allegations against town board airport liaison Councilman Dominick

Stanzione. A resident who lives near the airport, McGraw described how her household tranquility has been shattered by the relentless din of air traffic. She said Stanzione promised the town board and citizens of East Hampton that the new tower would mitigate noise. It started operating last week and, she said, “The airport noise is still intolerable. Nothing has changed!” McGraw charged Stanzione with duping “everyone,” and wasting $1 million in taxpayer money. She also said “I believe he is pursuing an agenda aimed at expanding the airport. Therefore I believe board member Stanzione should be removed as airport liaison because of deception and ethical breaches.”

Independent / Kitty Merrill

Protestors don’t think the new air traffic control tower is going to mitigate noise at the East Hampton Airport.

Operators recently met with pilots to describe how the tower will work. According to McGraw, at that meeting officials admitted the tower will not provide noise relief and was never expected to. “We should rename the tower “Stanzione’s Folly,’” she said. Stating people should “follow the money,” she accused Stanzione of acting in cahoots with Ben Krupinski, who owns property at the airport and is a political contributor. She offered no evidence of the supposed conspiracy between the pair, instead stating “I leave it to you, esteemed town board, to connect the dots.” On the heels of the recent holiday, Kathy Cunningham from the Quiet Skies Coalition offered her group’s “Declaration of Independence from the Federal Aviation Administration,” written in the style of the original declaration. Pat Trunzo, a former councilman and long time opponent to airport expansion echoed McGraw’s comments at the podium. None of the members of the town board responded to the emphatic accusations. On Friday, Stanzione said the speakers misrepresented comments made by airport and tower officials at the pilots meeting. “I heard them say safety is their first concern and noise is an obvious motivation for the tower and one that they were aware of.” He said that, since the tower has only been operational a short time, he feels the reaction was premature. The airport has yet to have its classification upgraded to reflect its airspace status as “controlled,” Stanzione explained. The change in classification, which is on the horizon, “is intended and believed to provide a higher level of traffic management,” the councilman said. That could mean, with craft controlled at higher altitudes and at greater distances, he said, “noise mitigation should be one of the principal benefits.” kmerrill@indyestend.com

Tainted Cop Faces Suspension By Rick Murphy

The Southampton Town Board was poised to suspend a police officer said to be at the epicenter of the town’s police scandal as The Independent went to press yesterday. Eric Sickles, according to numerous sources, stands accused of working several years while addicted to drugs. The fallout has already been remarkable – two

convicted felons were released from jail in May because the evidence obtained in the arrest – presumably arrests involving Sickles, was “tainted,” according to a statement by the Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota. Sickles’ direct super visor, Lt. James Kiernan, has been on suspension since May. The allegation is that Kiernan let Sickles continue on the job despite the fact he was

allegedly hooked on drugs. That meant carrying a weapon, making undercover buys and making arrests. The pair worked in the town’s street crime unit Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst confirmed yesterday that Sickles, who had been in a rehab facility, was out and technically ready to return to duty, thus prompting the board to take action.

“He’s been out on sick leave,” the supervisor said. Although Sickles will be suspended without pay, “He has the option of availing himself of unused vacation and sick time.” Spota said his office was “duty bound under the law” to release the prisoners and warned “other cases involving this unit will be dismissed.” However, Throne-Holst, while acknowledging the DA is in the midst of an investigation, said it was the town’s decision to suspend Sickles. “I don’t know what the DA is doing.” The town’s police internal affairs unit is also investigating Sickles, she added.

As summer continues on, Bay Street Theatre will play host for dozens of shows with some of the best comedians and actors in the country, giving the East End something to laugh about. Next Monday the annual comedy club series begins at 8 PM, as two time Emmy winning TV host, comedian and actor Ben Bailey comes to Sag Harbor to take the stage. Bailey is best known for his stint as host of the Discovery Channel’s popular trivia show “Cash Cab.” The New Jersey native, who has been profiled in the New York Times, Maxim, and the Associated Press, got his start as a, believe it or not, driver. After making his way through comedy club gigs and holding dozens of odd jobs, Bailey was offered the role of host for “Cash Cab.” He even successfully passed taxi school to become a licensed cab driver in New York City. Bailey has appeared in many TV shows and comedy specials including “Mad TV,” “One Life To Live,” and his very own “Comedy Central Presents” CONTINUED ON PAGE 40.

Peaceful Paddling

By Matthew Sprung

You wake up. It’s another beautiful one on the East End. The sun is shining and the sky seems bluer than it was yesterday. You’re wondering how to spend the day. As you stand up to get out of bed, you’ve already answered your question: Stand Up Paddleboarding. It’s a fun activity, good exercise, and a relaxing escape from anything clogging one’s mind. I recently took on this excruciating task to help out the rest of the Indy staff; I think they really appreciated my sacrifice. Don’t have a board lying around

the garage? That’s okay. I didn’t, either. Main Beach Surf and Sport in Wainscott has an extensive fleet of boards ready to launch you off into Talmage’s Creek, an inlet to Georgica Pond, right off Montauk Highway. Two young gentlemen, Chris Flores and George Contreras of the Springs, were there to set me up and send me off with a pointer: “Stand directly over the center!” Don’t know how to paddle? Don’t sweat it. I was a novice when I woke up the day I first went paddling. Luckily, Main Beach has rental boards for all skill levels, from beginners to experts. I found the

staff at Main Beach Surf and Sport tremendously friendly and helpful. After one day, I’m now confident in my abilities in a pond. Ocean paddling will be another story. George McKee gave me the rundown on the different boards and the fundamentals. Different

skill levels require different boards. Similar to surf boards, softops for beginners are wider and Proxy boards for more experienced paddlers are narrower with a harder top. To start, Chris and George will steady the board as you balance on your knees. Paddle out to deeper water, then, slowly use your arms to push yourself up. Keep your knees slightly bent as you stand with your feet shoulder-width apart over the center of the board, keeping a low center of gravity. A common mistake people make once they start paddling is using their bottom forearm to produce a powerful stroke. Instead, what you want to do is generate power from the shoulder of your top hand. Think about pushing the top of the paddle forward like a lever, as opposed to pulling the bottom of it back. This preserves energy and maximizes each stroke. For a doable challenge, try paddling to the “Gut,” which is at one end of Georgica Pond. A rewarding view of the Atlantic Ocean some 40 yards away awaits your arrival. From the launch area, the journey took me about an hour roundtrip with strong paddling. Explore the four other outlets to the pond, including Georgica Cove, for a more expansive paddling experience. McKee commented on the “nice juxtaposition between nature and the big houses” which sit unobtrusively on the shores of the pond. A workout is guaranteed, but the level of intensity is up to you. Paddle hard and feel your core and arms being strengthened. Or, paddle gently out to the middle of the pond, lay back and take a meditative nap. I did both, and can confirm you can’t go wrong either way in this serene setting. But do remember sunblock, shades, and a hat. Main Beach Surf and Sport is located at 352 Montauk Highway in Wainscott. A full day Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) rental costs $100. Half days (four hours) are $75. You can reserve a board online or call 631-537-2716. According to the store, “Sublime beauty, tranquility and relaxation await you.” I would have to agree.

Task Force Tags Over 20 Tipplers By Kitty Merrill

For over two dozen accused drunk drivers, it wasn’t a good weekend to roll the dice and hope to make it home unscathed. Last Saturday night the newly formed East End DWI Task Force descended on East Hampton and Shelter Island Towns, setting up checkpoints between 8 PM and 4 AM Sunday and reeling in a total of 26 reeling riders. In East Hampton checkpoints covered areas in the township, as well as in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Villages. That sweep netted 21 DWI arrests and one DWAI collar. There were also three arrests on charges of unlawful possession of marijuana, and one for criminal possession of a controlled substance, seventh degree, for a total of 27 arrests made by task force officers during the operation. In Shelter Island two checkpoints resulted in the cuffing of four suspected quaffers, and one driver charged with pot possession and driving with ability impaired by drugs. On Shelter Island officers from Shelter Island, Riverhead and Southold Police Departments participated in the program last weekend. Traffic safety check points and random patrol checks were performed resulting in the five arrests in total. Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend, Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota joined Sheriff Vincent DeMarco, SCDA East End Bureau Chief Steve Kuehhas, and the chiefs of 10 East End police departments as well as officials from the Suffolk County Police, Suffolk Park Police and the New York State Police in the announcement of the formation and deployment of the Suffolk County East End DWI Task Force on eastern Suffolk roads and highways. “This multi-jurisdictional enforcement action in eastern Suffolk County will target those driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or the combination of the two on the East End this weekend and other weekends this summer,” Spota said in May. The new initiative under the auspices of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office began Friday evening, May 25. Spota said the philosophy behind the formation of the task force, is to employ a team approach, without regard to jurisdictional boundaries, to protect local residents and visitors to eastern Long Island. “Local police departments in the five towns and villages don’t

have the resources to focus solely on drunk and drugged drivers on holiday weekends,” he explained. “This team strategy will augment local law enforcement and make the expansion of the enforcement action on the East End more mobile and responsive.” “The message is: have a good time, enjoy eastern Suffolk County and all it has to offer and be aware

that for the first time on the East End, we are combining our forces to remove drunk and drugged drivers from east end roads,” Spota said. For the years 2009 to 2011, total DWI arrests processed in East End town and justice courts averaged 1,100 to 1,200 cases per year. The STOP DWI Operation has the participation from the following law enforcement agencies: East Hampton

Town, Southampton Village, East Hampton Village, Southold Town, New York State Troopers, Suffolk County Parks Police, Riverhead Town, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Sag Harbor Village, Suffolk County PD, Shelter Island Town, Quogue Village, Southampton Town and Westhampton Beach Village and Southold Town. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Maysles Coming To Guild Hall By Rick Murphy

Albert Maysles is probably the foremost documentary filmmaker working today. Along with his brother, David, the pair filmed two seminal moments in the history of rock and roll: The Rolling Stones at Altamont Raceway in 1969, and the Concert For New York City in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks. Albert (his brother died in 1987) will be in East Hampton this week to discuss the films he made: Gimme Shelter and The Love We Make. Tomorrow at Guild Hall in East Hampton he will discuss the former (and Friday the latter) beginning at 8 PM with moderator Ali Wentworth and

special guests. He said in an interview that the Rolling Stones and other guests found themselves in a chaotic situation at Altamont. “Before the concert began I was standing near the stage with my heavy camera. A guy said ‘Get away from me or I’ll kill you.’” Maysles moved, but the place where he was standing was the exact spot where a man was killed later by a member of the Hell’s Angels. “I moved behind the Stones and I was filming the Stones. But my brother was on a truck and he captured the whole thing.” It is one of the most riveting moments in the history of documentary filmmaking. The scene was out of control –

Mick Jagger was visibly shaken, but Maysles went on filming. “You get so involved. I didn’t feel the danger.” The Maysles raised $600,000 to film the event, which happened just a few months after Woodstock. “We had to scramble,” he related. “The Stones ended up giving us $120,000.” The resulting film is a remarkable record of “The Day The Sixties Died.” After 9/11 Paul McCartney, who was in New York City during the attack, wanted to do something for the firefighters and others who responded to the scene to help, as well as for the families of those who gave their lives. He made a few phone calls, and within days had assembled the greatest lineup of rock stars ever

to perform on the same stage. On October 20, 2001 McCartney, Elton John, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Jagger and Keith Richards, members of The Who, David Bowie, Elton John, Bon Jovi and many others took the stage at Madison Square Garden. Naturally, McCartney hired Maysles to film the event. The brothers had met Sir Paul in 1964 while filming The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit. “The whole idea of it was connected to the word ‘love.’ We have more war than peace. This was a film dedicated to peace.” Maysles will be at Guild Hall Friday to show some clips and answer questions about The Love We Make with Michelle Murphy Strada moderating and special guests promised. Maysles is, of course, no stranger to East Hampton. In 1976 the brothers released Grey Gardens, the profile of the Beales, (mother and daughter both named Edith) that made the younger Edith a cult hero. In 2010 the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.” Maysles, who turns 86 in November, isn’t slowing down. He’s currently making a film about Elie Wiesel. Despite a five-decade long association with rock music, Maysles isn’t a big fan of rock. “My brother was. I like classical music,” he said.

On July 3, members of the Donald T. Sharkey Memorial Community Fund awarded Shelby Joyce, who graduated from East Hampton High School this year, a scholarship in the amount of $2,500 to put towards her studies of Biology and Marine Science at the University of Miami, where she starts in the fall. Joyce, of Montauk, interned at the East Hampton Town Shellfish Hatchery for two years, and volunteered at the Montauk Historical Society and Maureen’s Haven. That same evening, Fund members distributed $3,000 in Sharkey’s name to the six East End Fire Departments at the annual chiefs’ meeting, which was held at the East Hampton firehouse. Additionally, thanks to very

generous fund supporters, the committee was able to award eight scholarships totaling $30,000 to children between the ages of four and seven to attend summer camp full time this year while their parents work. Money was also given to the Wounded Warrior Project, the East Hampton Boy Scout Troop, and medical bills were paid for several individual community members. In total the DTSMCF distributed $40,000. The fund was established in 2009 following the death of E a s t H a m p t o n To w n C h i e f Building Inspector Don Sharkey, a beloved community member. Since its inception, the organization

not put it back until I returned home. This went on for a couple of weeks. One evening, after playing touch football in the schoolyard after school, I returned home. Gasp! I couldn’t find the goddamn retainer. I panicked. I knew the thing cost a fortune, and I knew I was going to get hell for losing it. I enlisted my older sister – never a good idea – to help. I ran back to the schoolyard. I searched every inch, every crevice. I ran back into the school to look in my desk, my locker. I turned my pockets inside out over and over – nothing. I went home, but said nothing. As my mother peppered me with questions about why I was so late I deftly turned away before I answered to conceal my face. Meanwhile my sister had concocted a plan: with a box of paper clips, we would reconstruct the brace. Always intelligent for my age, I then decided I could use airplane glue to stick the wire on my teeth, although I feared the bums who used to lie on the sidewalks on Nostrand Avenue would want to sniff my teeth. In the end, it became apparent that two kids ages 13 and 14 wouldn’t be able to construct a dental retainer using paper clips and airplane glue, though we did construct something that resembled a miniature Eiffel Tower. My father hit the roof. I offered to pay for another retainer out of my allowance, which was fifty cents a

week. My sister pointed out it would take over 140 years to pay it off. Then the bottom fell out. The orthodontist decided I couldn’t be trusted with a removable retainer – I was getting the real deal. The whole kebab. The rack. Glistening, stainless steel caps, with wires running through them. On the top, they squeezed my teeth together. On the bottom, they pulled my teeth apart. Every two weeks the evil dentist – who I’m sure enjoyed torture – would twist a few wires, thus insuring two more weeks of intense pain. On the streets, it was worse. Even when I won an occasional fight I looked like I lost – my lips were always bloody and swollen. Every game of basketball meant a throbbing mouth. I spit blood out continually. At St. Francis, where the nuns mistakenly thought I was a wise ass (I preferred “precocious”) every smack would mean a swollen lip. Two years later I decided to take matters into my own hands. I cut one of the main wires with a wire cutter. It snapped into the inside of my cheek, where a flap of loose skin bears testimony to this day of the ferocity with which the wire cut into my flesh. Soon, I looked like an electrician’s project – wires coming out of my mouth in every direction, as if they should be attached to some power source. “Mom,” I said, her face contorted in horror. “I can’t look any uglier without braces than I do with them on.” My parents finally agreed: they had to come off, all of them. One day, I will be traveling in the Orient on a train. There, in the parlor car, a wizened old sorcoress will approach me. She will tell the tale of a young boy, planting corn in Nebraska, who found a strange object. She had come to possess it after seeing it in a pawnshop in Shanghai. Then she will pull the object out of her deep pocket. “I think this belongs to you,” she will say, offering it to me. It will be that freaking retainer. Then she’ll smack me in the mouth.

Occupy Somewhere Else Every citizen has a right to protest peacefully, and to do so is part of our political landscape. But what happened in Southampton Village went too far. Residents wait for one of those gorgeous, hot summer weekend days. Renters pay tens of thousands of dollars to enjoy the sunshine and the beach. It’s one thing if locals decided to protest Mitt Romney’s visit to the Koch estate on Meadow Lane Sunday, but busing in protesters from upisland and the city is just piling on. We also question the motives of the coalition of groups that banded together to organize this protest. One claimed, “They will be taking a non-partisan stance.” Clearly, the demonstration, at a fundraiser of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was political in nature. Yes, the Koch brothers are indeed “one-percenters” – dirty words to one segment of our society. But where was the outrage when entertainment mogul David Geffen was pouring money into the Obama campaign? Where were the demonstrators when Bill Clinton swept into East Hampton and came out millions of dollars richer? Present Obama often extols the virtues of Warren Buffet, one of the world’s wealthiest individuals. Isn’t he one of those demonized one-percenters? Goldman-Sachs, at the epicenter of the Wall Street meltdown (and according to published reports the financial

Affordable? How?

Dear Rick, I read the article on page 4 of the July Fourth issue. The 4th paragraph, quoting Tim Bishop, read: “all Americans will have access to secure and affordable coverage regardless of pre-existing conditions.” Fact: since April 1993, almost 20 years ago, not one New Yorker has had to answer health related questions in order to be able to buy medical insurance. Fact: everyone pays the same regardless of health conditions, age, or gender. Why

meltdown in Greece), was the second largest contributor to President Obama’s 2008 campaign. JP Morgan/Chase and Citigroup were also high on the list. Didn’t these banks get billions of dollars in bailout money right after Obama took office? Where is the moral outrage from the Long Island Progressive Coalition and the others? Ironically, some of protestors Sunday held signs condemning the Wall Street banks and the bailout money they pocketed – which had nothing at all to do with the Republican Presidential candidate. The president has embraced Priorities USA Action, a Super Pac set up by former White House aide Bill Burton in 2011. It is no different than the organization the Koch brothers funnel money into. Our political process has been in place for years. We have two candidates, and each has wealthy power brokers backing them, and each has scores of wealthy individuals pouring money into their campaigns. It’s business as usual. Let’s allow the two candidates to compete for our votes, but let’s not pretend either one is something they are not. Forcing police and Secret Service to close down Meadow Lane on a summer Sunday was a slap in the face to everyone else in Southampton Village. It was selfish behavior, better played out at a filthy park in Manhattan than on our pristine shores.

don’t any of our elected representatives mention this? Do they even know it? The basic premise of Obamacare is flawed -- as I see it, “if more people buy health insurance, the cost will come down.” Really? How? Health insurance premiums chase healthcare costs. Most of the people that I come in contact with that don’t have health insurance would buy it if it wasn’t so damn expensive. So how will taxing people who already can’t afford coverage help them? Sure beats me. KARL WASHWICK, CHFC, CLU The Washwick Agency, Inc

Who’s Enlightened Now? To The Editor, John Molnar’s letter last week is concerned that the Left won’t have the money to compete with conservative “Billionaire Benefactors.” He needn’t worry. The Koch Bros. are worth approximately $250 million. George Soros alone is worth hundreds of billions. And as David Horowitz points out in his new book, The New Leviathan. Leftist foundations like Carnegie, Ford, etc. have about $110 billion at their disposal compared to about $11 billion for Conservative foundations. Add in Hollywood, the Unions, and the fact that, contrary to myth, Wall St. donates more to Democrats than to Republicans,

July 11, 2012

and there will be no shortage of money for Leftist causes. Mr. Molnar’s letter also claims that he and the voters of New York and California and some other Leftist bastions are “more enlightened” than the rest of us lowly Americans. But judging by his letter, he is neither enlightened nor enlightening about the goings-on in Wisconsin. First he conveniently fails to mention that Citizens United gives unions, including public service unions, the same right to spend money supporting their causes as it gives to corporations and everybody else. And spend they did, to the tune of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions if you count their original attempt to defeat Gov. Walker. Joining in was the usual horde of Hollywood half-wits, who took time off from making their latest vampire flicks and other manifestations of their artistic genius to flock to Wisconsin and harangue the good citizens with their usual semi-literate inanities. For good measure, Nancy Pelosi and a few other Democratic hacks showed up and as always made everybody else sound intelligent by comparison. And it was these same “enlightened” folks, including large numbers from the highly paid Teachers Union, who rioted, threatened the lives of Gov. Walker and his family, did $7 million worth of damage to the Wisconsin State House, fought with police and generally acted like it was Spring Break with a little Marxist sloganeering and a smattering of anti-Semitism thrown in. And they were being paid all the while -- by the taxpayer. Maybe their behavior explains why the Unions had so much trouble raising money from the good citizens of Wisconsin this time around. It certainly helps explain the results. Wisconsin, a Liberal state for many decades, gave Obama 56 percent of the vote in 2008. Yet Gov. Walker won a 7-point victory in the Recall, in spite of massive vote fraud in Milwaukee, Madison and Racine. Since these cities are all heavily Democratic, you Continued on page 22.

Strictly Imaginary Dear Indy Editor, Jeb Bush recently stated in all candor what anyone witnessing the recent incarnation could see. Any resemblance of today’s Neo-Conservative party to what was once the Grand Old Party is strictly imaginary. The former Florida governor said Ronald Reagan and his father, George H.W. Bush, would find themselves out of step

By Karen Fredericks

Alice Fachman People have a right to protest. But Romney has a right to go out there and raise money for his campaign. That’s what politicians do. It seemed a bit harsh going out and campaigning against him. I didn’t really understand exactly what people were protesting against. Sally Jo Blanchat You’ve got George Clooney giving 15 million to the Obama campaign, using his name, his weight, his notoriety and his money. That’s kind of offensive. But he has the right to do that. So does all of Hollywood. So why is no one protesting that? Mark Blanchat I think the deeper issue here is that there needs to be equal coverage of the protests on both sides. The media shouldn’t get to decide who gets to be our next president by what they cover and what they don’t.

Fix The Schools

To the Editor, With our lighting code in the news and under discussion, I’d like to point out an entertaining film that will be shown on Channel 21 today (8 AM, 2 PM, and 7 PM) called “City Dark.” Anyone with an interest in the dark sky issue and light pollution will enjoy this film. SUSAN HARDER

What did you think of the protests at the Romney fundraiser in Southampton?

don’t have to guess who benefitted from the vote stealing. Gov. Walker’s margin was really 10-11 percent. This is the real harbinger for the future. The Left plans to engage in massive voter fraud in November and Wisconsin was a rehearsal. This portends a truly dangerous situation this fall, especially with a corrupt and lawless Justice Department. In spite of the money the Left will have and the voter fraud they’ll try, let’s hope that voters all across the country will be as enlightened as the formerly deluded voters of Wisconsin. Dear Rick, Last week’s editorial concerning the status of our health care mess, was “spot on.” Thorough and well said. Excellent work. Now, if you will use the same formula and expose the corruption of our local school systems which spend tens of thousands of our tax dollars per student while leaving 25 to 30 percent of them without the simple critical thinking skills to be successful adults, free of excessive economic and social burdens, then you will be wonderfully close to living up to your paper’s name, again! PAUL BABCOCK

Liz McIntosh They can protest all they want but we want Romney in office next year. That’s the only hope for America. End of story. Exclamation point, exclamation point. Hollywood is full of limousine liberals contributing to the Obama campaign but no one complains about it.

with today’s Republican Party. “Back to my dad’s time and Ronald Reagan’s time – they got a lot of stuff done with a lot of bipartisan support,” he said. Reagan now, “would be criticized for doing the things he did.” Thirty six-year veteran Senator Richard Lugar is the latest victim to be purged by the Conservative Party. His treasonous sin was bipartisanship; getting things done. His replacement Richard Murdock fits the No Compromise ticket to a tee. Today’s neocon party is not a rebirth, as these freshman would like one to believe. As much as they abuse the term, they are an abortion. JOMAR DIAZ

Mixed Message To the Editor, What an embarrassing situation. We have a Republican Governor; Florida’s Rick Scott, crowing about the fantastic unemployment drop in his state, Ohio’s Republican Governor John Kasich bragging about the same, Virginia Republican Governor Bob McDonnell ecstatic with the ongoing jobs recovery and Michigan’s Republican Governor Rick Snyder who refers to his rise in employment as, “The Comeback State.” Even Republican Governor Brian Sandoval of Nevada has good reason to be cheerful, as does Republican Governor Terry E.

Branstad of Iowa. All were bragging about how their own particular State’s unemployment was shrinking. That’s wonderful. So what’s wrong with this picture? What’s wrong is that they are all unintentionally complimenting President Obama on his efforts to reduce unemployment. President Obama is steadily reversing the unemployment disaster he inherited (Republicans do not want to talk about that Bush inheritance; any more that they do about that of their present candidate’s). The fear of the true unemployment decrease brought to light by the proud chest beating Republican Governors began to sound like an Obama “Jobs Created” election commercial and was quickly noted by the Party’s word manglers and twisted into their typical partisan terms. RNC Chairman Reince Preibus immediately put out a statement calling the news “yet another reminder that far too many Americans are out of work, and the situation is clearly not improving.” DUH! ARLENE PHILOMENA

Naming Names To the Editor, I was wondering why some people’s full names were used in Kitty Merrill’s column and some not at all. In my case Todd M. Continued on page 23.

Sautter was used as well as tagging me a West Babylon Boozer. A little premature in convicting I think. Well, anyway I was exonerated of all charges except one, which was a $125 fine for disorderly conduct. The pen or Internet is a powerful tool for good things but it appears Kitty has never been in any precarious situations in life and chooses to condemn the innocent well before proven guilty. Attaching humorous tags to people about serious events is not funny. I don’t think she realizes the consequences of her anecdotes. Save them for one of your charity fundraiser cocktail parties with your Southampton Saucers. “Ruff Ruff” Kitty. Todd M. Sauter Editor’s Note: The letter writer is referring to a police report published in September 2009. He was arrested and charged with felony DWI. The newspaper stated he was an “alleged” West Babylon Boozer and the article pointed out that “police said” he was drinking and driving, not that it was a fact. The Independent only prints the names of those charged with felonies.

July Fourth Dear Rick, July Fourth is the day we set forth to declare our independence. We were young and free, a brand new country with no equal. We had Uncle Sam. He was our man. He swore he would never let us down. We were full of fight and vigor, until

someone pulled the trigger. We joined the fight. We thought we were right to fight with all our might till Johnny came marching home. They shot him and gassed him. They thought they’d outlast him, but Johnny kept marching on. He marched through the fields and climbed the highest mountains. He marched until he could stand no more. And so the war ends, he’s lost all his friends, But Johnny comes marching home. RICHARD SAWYER.

Audit Committee Dear Rick, Kitty Merrill’s piece, “BFAC and GGG On AC” was a well written article about the appointment of a new Audit Committee by the town board. The Budget and Financial Advisory Committee has offered the town board their strong and knowledgeable viewpoint about the creation of the Town Audit Advisory Committee. It’s simple; no town board members should be monitoring themselves. When Mr. [Len] Bernard refers to School Board members being on an audit committee, and associates this with Town Boards, he is evidently confusing the law that governs school districts with those of town boards. Towns don’t function the same way. What kind of checks and balances system would we have if the administration monitors itself? Hopefully, this town board will take the advise of its own advisory committee and appoint independent financial experts to their Audit Committee in order to provide non-political, and strictly financial oversight to the board. Why The Alias Dear Editor, I read (once again) with amazed interest a Liberal’s version of logic regarding B. “Hussein” Obama! Mr “Zack Pal”(in last week’s letters) offered, his version of the truth about the man, who occupies the White House. Once again, as with most Liberals, he chose to ignore the real (and basic) facts about this person! First and foremost he ignored that we now have a seated president who has (and has used) two

names! A president, who has an alias, something that has been reserved for criminals until now. I am referring to “Barry Soetoro” -- does anyone recall his half sister, who spoke, at the Democratic National convention that nominated him, to run in 2008? Maya Soetoro did this. I would say that gives much credibility, to his name of Barry Soetoro! Now, how many are aware of his being raised by his stepfather? Lola Soetoro, (after his mother married Mr Soetoro) raised Obama in Jakarta, Indonesia, and sent him to to a Muslim school as a child. He studied the Koran, and learned to read, write and speak Arabic in that school. It gets a little “hazy” from this point on! For it seems none other then Mr. Barry Soetoro accepted a scholarship

reserved for “foreign students only” under the Fulbright scholarship program and attended Occidental college in California. Hmm. For foreign students only! And how did he get into this country? Perhaps this, is why he has chosen to use the name, Barack “Hussein” Obama? Only? And perhaps, this is why the American voters and taxpayers, have not been treated to any of his past school records. There are far too many unknowns, about this person. For example, why he is not permitted to practice law any longer and why did his own legal council admit in a court of law that his birth certificate used in a court case in New Jersey, (this year) was forged? These are but some of the facts that are flooding the Internet, about The man in the White House who uses an alias as the Commander-in Chief of this nation. Mr. Pal, might I suggest you investigate the entire story, and truth, about this person, before you write any more letters about the “direction President Obama (Soetoro) would like to take this country?” Of one point I am certain: Mr. Pal, and many Liberals, will all attempt to debate this letter, and you can be certain all of them will attempt to change the subject, and to make a joke, of my letter. This is generally the way most Liberals respond to the truth! RICHARD G. KRAUSE

Perhaps there should be a designated spot for drop offs, she mused, but the parking area is little more in size than a typical road end. The beach parking permit process used to be a way of regulating the number of people at any given site. The new visitors, Quigley pointed out, are avoiding that process by taking cabs or limos to the beach. The councilwoman has begun researching how other beach communities handle the problem of overcrowding. “We can’t be the only ones to ever have to deal with this,” she said. In the meantime, Quigley plans to forward the notion of a beach music ban. “Part of me wants to say no amplified music on the beach at all,” she confided. “My personal opinion is the ocean is the ocean.

When I’m there I like to listen to the waves. The whole purpose is the calming effect.” Speaking to Indian Wells’ new status as the in spot for parties, she said, “It’s kind of become a phenomenon. It’s getting a reputation.” That rep is aided by the Internet. The site guestofaguest.com recently divulged “a little secret in Amagansett” that solves the age old problem for folks confronted with gorgeous beach weather and a desire to “post up at a bar and drink.” The article dated June 21, suggests packing up a 30-rack of beer and hitting Indian Wells Beach where, “You get to lay in the sand, you don’t have to pay $12 for a drink, and you most certainly don’t have to wear shoes.” Responding to the article, one poster who’s been going to Indian Wells for 15 years wrote, “was wondering when this beach shifted from a family theme to Panama

Whalers Exhibit The second of two summer exhibits will be opening at the Bridgehampton Historical Society’s Corwith House on Friday at 5 PM at the Corwith House at 2368 Montauk Highway. This exhibit celebrates local men who went to sea to hunt whales, most of whom came back to farm. Using excerpts from whaling logs, art work by Claus Hoie, furniture once belonging to whaling captains, scrimshaw, and exotic mementos brought back from around the world, the danger, excitement and rewards of hunting the whale is revealed. The exhibit will remain on display Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 2 PM, until October 1st. Another Highway Fatality By Kitty Merrill

According to East Hampton Town Police Chief Ed Ecker, she “fatal misjudged” the turn. Suzanne Lavenas, 69, of Montauk, was killed, when the Toyota she was driving collided with a Ford pickup on Montauk Highway near South Fox Street in Montauk. No charges have been filed against the truck driver Thomas Gubitosi, a Farmingdale resident.

Chief Ecker said Lavenas was traveling eastbound on the highway when she tried to turn left into South Fox Street. Gubitosi “sees her turn and he turns the wheel the best he can.” The result was a head on collision that claimed the motorist’s life. Her passenger, Frances Berg, 88, suffered broken ribs and other injuries. The accident occurred at around 9 PM. Montauk Ambulance responded

the collision. Witnesses on the scene made mention that her driving was erratic, he said. He called the crash a tragedy and said it was “just a shame.” This is the fourth fatal car crash in East Hampton this year. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

of town across the street from the busy IGA supermarket. They wondered how a chain store could appear without extensive planning board review. Town officials said the retail use was permitted, but improvements to the site would prompt a site plan review. The review has begun and last week members of the East Hampton Town Planning Board got their first look at the proposal for the site. The applicants are asking for permission to reconfigure the parking lot and improve the site’s lighting, landscaping, and drainage. According to a memo prepared by planner Eric Schantz, the property is located in a Central Business zoning district and abuts Fort Pond. It’s nearly 100 percent cleared with a small area of vegetation along the shoreline. Under the guidance of the state Department of Environmental

IN THE NEWS

Conservation the area will be revegetated. A new parking scheme adds more greenery to the site; “islands” to be planted along the shoulder of Montauk Highway and on the store side of the sidewalk. Two shade trees will also be planted on site. In its current state, the parking lot is a free-for-all, with no marked stalls and no clear egress and ingress to the site. People sometimes park on the sidewalk. The proposed layout is designed to resolve the issue, with the eastern entrance of the lot narrowed and curved and the western access built wide enough for two-way traffic. Schantz’s memo notes, “The Planning Department favors this reconfiguration.” To w n p l a n n i n g d i r e c t o r Marguerite Wolffsohn reported that the only sticking point between the planning board and the applicants related to the material used to pave the parking lots. The applicants wanted to use concrete while town officials favor asphalt. Although planners seemed satisfied with the proposal, the application won’t be flying through review. A proposed dumpster enclosure will require a Natural Resources Special Permit as well as a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals. “However, it is noted that the constraints of the site make it difficult to relocate this structure and that the proposed re-grading of the parking lot and new drainage structures should provide a net reduction of adverse impact upon Fort Pond from storm water run-off THE INDEPENDENT from improved areas,” the memo points out. kmerrill@indyeastend.com NOW, FOR THE NORTH FORK, THE

Despite threats to picket a fundraiser at the Koch estate in Southampton, protestors had to settle for a walk on the beach.

Romney

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4. in – almost all of them came from upisland or New York City. “People were angry so much money is spent on something like that,” she commented. She estimated the crowd to be about 200 – others on hand said it was considerably smaller. “Our crowd was very respectful. We were cognizant that we wanted it to be non-violent,” Oldendorp said. Unlike the Meadow Lane scene, only a handful of protesters meandered in front of Perleman’s sprawling compound, but on Georgica Pond two local men in a small sailing boat took umbrage to an East Hampton Village sergeant in a boat who restricted their path, though the village has no authority over the waterway. Both sailors ended up getting arrested. That story is reported separately. However, the incident sparked a flurry of activity within the Romney camp. “The Secret Service went on high alert,” Epley said. At one point

Secret Service agents eyed a car parked away from the designated area where demonstrators were asked to park. “They busted the windows out, but they didn’t find anything,” Epley said. Oldendorp said protestors were shouting, “whose beach? Our beach!” as they walked along the shore, which rubbed more than a few locals the wrong way. The mayor said village residents were less than thrilled with the unwanted influx of outsiders. “There were a significant amount of people who go to the beach who were very upset.” Epley stayed on Meadow Lane by the State Police barricade to help some of the locals get through. Many Romney supporters who live in the village were concerned. “They didn’t want Romney to think he didn’t have supporters here,” Epley related. They were allowed to set up shop away from the protestors but in a place were they could shout support to Romney’s motorcade as it passed by.

Arrest

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4. However a press release from Fink stated the pair “were attempting to exercise their rights under the First Amendment to freedom of speech while scrupulously avoiding the shoreline and any possible perception they were seeking to enter into East Hampton Village or Mr. Perelman’s property.“ Fink’s press release further stated, “EHVPD assaulted him, handcuffed him, forced his head underwater and dragged him ashore.” He additionally said he was denied proper medical attention. Sgt. Erickson “is one of my most senior officers. I totally support the arrest,” said Village Police Chief Jerry Larsen. With Romney and the Secret Service nearby “security

is definitely heightened,” Larsen added. “No one else on the pond had a problem.” Larsen said he did not witness the incident, although Fink charged the chief was “sipping champagne” at the fundraiser, Larsen said he was in uniform and on duty during the event. Erickson has authority to make an arrest anywhere in New York State, Larsen said, so Fink’s contention that the village lacks authority on Georgica Pond was irrelevant. Meanwhile, the High Alert call went out to Secret Service agents in Southampton Village, where Romney was slated to appear later in the day. At one point they smashed the windows of a car and searched it, presumably for explosives. None were found, according to Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley.

Riverhead Edges Westhampton, Takes First Place By Rick Murphy

The Riverhead Tomcats bought themselves some breathing room Saturday, edging Westhampton 6-5 to take over sole possession of first place in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. Playing before a home crowd, Josh Mason crushed two dingers and batted in four runs to lead the winners, now 15-8 for the season. Westhampton, down 3-0 in the first courtesy of Mason’s three run blast, made a game of it. With one out in the ninth Sam Frost homered for the Aviators to pull within one run, but Nick Johnson closed the door to record his league leading fourth save. Brian Guymon hit his fifth homer for the losers, now mired in sixth place with a 9-17 mark. Tiny Shelter Island has itself a

booming baseball team. The Bucks are pounding the ball at a record clip, amassing an astounding 190 runs while compiling a 16-11 mark. Saturday, playing at the friendly confines of Shelter Island High School, the Bucks erupted again, slamming the North Fork Ospreys 18-5 after opening a 15-0 lead. Zach Collett lofted a three run bomb and lashed two two-run doubles for the winners, who pounded out 18 hits. Paul Simone earned this third straight win, going six strong innings to improve his record to 3-2. Shelter Island and Riverhead play a double header tomorrow on the island. The Ospreys fell to third place with a 14-10 mark. Thus far, Tim Panetta of the Ospreys has the highest slugging percentage in the league at .712.

Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica

Chief of Staff, First District Southern Region, USCG Aux, US Coast Guard Licensed Master

How Small A Wave Can Capsize A Boat? Certainly, the tragedy in Oyster Bay on July Fourth points to the urgent need for more understanding of capsizing by boat captains. There is a tremendous amount of data on “righting moments,” centers of buoyancy and gravity, thanks to the US Navy and the US Coast Guard, amongst many institutions that literally live and die by these metrics. We’ve also seen a couple of columns here about wind and waves, which are the agents of capsizing. (see The Independent archives, “Wave Theory and Practice, in our 3/23/11 issue and “Wave Theory and Practice, Part II” in our 7/21/10 issue at indyeastend.com.)

Some Background To understand the forces of a capsizing, and how those forces change when you load the boat (see The Independent, “We All Get Heavier With Age – Including Our Boats”, 3/02/11), let’s get some terms under our belts. Most of us understand “center of gravity” (G) instinctually. But what is the center of buoyancy? The center of buoyancy (B) is the center of the volume of water the hull displaces. When a ship is stable, the center of buoyancy is vertically in-line with the center of gravity of the ship. As long as the center of gravity (G) pushing the boat down is above the center of buoyancy (B) pushing the boat up, we’re good. How good? That is a very good question and as with many good questions, it requires more information to answer properly. Take a look at Diagram A. Diagram A

What is that “M” sitting up there above our trusty center of “G”ravity and the center of “B”uoyancy? That is something very important called the “M”etacenter. The metacenter remains directly above the center of buoyancy regardless of the heeling (tilting caused by external factors like wind or waves) or listing (tilting

caused by internal factors such as poorly stowed cargo or on-boarding of water by wind or waves) of a boat. Take a look at Diagram B. Diagram B

needed to knock a boat down when broadside to a wave. 2. The boat is struck by a breaking wave. 3. Wave height must exceed a certain percentage of the boat’s length. At this point the wave contains enough energy to overcome a boat’s righting moment. S o , w h a t i s t h a t “c e r t a i n percentage?” At only 30 percent of your boat’s length (about six feet from trough to crest for a 20-foot boat), things enter directly into the realm of high danger. At 60 percent, it is nearly certain that one wave

New Baby?

43

will catch you and then you, the crew, and the boat may well come to grief. As you change the weight of the boat, you lower the center of gravity. This makes the boat “more tender”, i.e., it reduces the righting arm – which makes the boat easier to capsize. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, who are in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing.”

New Nursery. Home Equity Lines of Credit • Easy application process with no points • Local decision making • Fast approval*

If you are starting to worry about the distance between “G” and “M”, called the “Metacentric height” (or “GM” in naval architecture parlance), you’re catching on quickly. The math gets pretty complicated from here, but suffice to say, the ability of the boat to right herself, i.e, her “righting arm” or “righting moment” has a lot to do with GM. The larger the GM acting as a lever, the better. Sailboats are designed to operate with a higher degree of heel (greater GM) than motor boats, but the principles are exactly the same.

From This to Wave Height? Yes. You can infer that your motor boat’s center of gravity and center of buoyancy can’t be too far apart when the entire distance from the keel to the floor boards is probably something like two or three feet. Think of her draft. It isn’t a big number, even for a 40-footer. No reason to panic, but you now realize that M, G and B can’t be that far apart – which means that GM just can’t be that great, either. And GM is a surrogate for the righting ability of your boat. But, wait. I’ve been out in some pretty steep seas and I think the boat handled it well. That’s because studies conducted by the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers determined that three things must exist for a capsizing to occur: 1. The boat is broadside to the wave. Yes, a boat can be pitch-poled (tossed end-over-end), but the size of the wave needed to do that greatly exceeds the size of the smaller wave

Fishing Report Hot Weather, Hot Fishing Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean The fluke bite in the bay continues to be the best bet. They have spread throughout the bay including the basket and areas inside the inlet. On the ocean the best choice is to head out to the reef. Seabass, porgies, triggerfish and fluke have all come out of here. Seabass to seven pounds have come over the rails with a good showing by the other species as well. The inlet and bridge are still holding the bass for the clam drifters and chummers. The size and quantity of fish have been on the decrease of late. Blue are ravaging baits in the inlet on most evenings.

Peconic Bay Porgies are the best bet around Robin’s Island with some blowfish mixing in. The weakfish are out in the holes failing for squid and clam on porgy rigs. Surf/Shore bound/Canal The canal has a good amount of porgies at the north end for those using worm baits or clam. Some fluke can be found at the south end along with very small seabass. Snappers are around but very small still. A couple more weeks and they should be everywhere. Bass are still falling for clams at the inlet, along with some fluke

RTS

Rating The Wide Receivers When it comes to the list of top receivers, one name stands alone: Megatron. Calvin John, The Calvinator, is clearly the best receiver in football, and clearly the best in Fantasy Football. There is a difference. To be a great Fantasy player, a receiver needs a quarterback who throws the ball a lot, and a quarterback who throws to him. If Johnson were on a team that plays ball control and runs the ball a lot, he’d still be great, but not for Fantasy purposes. Matthew Stafford throws a lot, though, and more often than not he looks for Tron. Last season Tron grabbed 96 balls for 1681 yards and 16 TDs, scoring more Fantasy points than any running back – and that has never happened before. As is always the case in Fantasy, there is a caveat: Stafford has been hurt the past three seasons, and Johnson gets nicked up as well. Nevertheless, it will cost you an early first round pick if you want him – and he’s worth it. Andre Johnson is a perfect example of what can go wrong. Two seasons ago he was among the top rated receivers, but his quarterback, Matt Schaub, went down to a season ending injury and so did Johnson. He ended up 92nd in receiving in 2011. We expect him to bounce back in a big way, though, and he will be a draft day bargain. Larry Fitzgerald is ranked in the top three by most pundits, and deservedly so. He always gets more than his share of catches. We are a bit concerned about the unsettled quarterback situation in Arizona, though. Wes Welker is another highly ranked receiver, but we suspect his numbers will go down this year. Tom Brady has a lot of mouths to feed in New England, and he figures to spread the ball around more. Ya gotta grab Roddy White if he’s available when it’s time to get your first wide receiver. He started off slowly last year but once again ended up with outstanding numbers: 100-1296-8.

Next up are the two NY Giant standouts, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. Nicks may miss a couple games, but he is explosive and a great producer when he’s on the field. Cruz was the surprise star of the 2011 season and with Eli Manning on top of his game, both receivers figure to put up big numbers. We like A.J. Green to advance into the elite group in his second season. As a rookie, the youngster showed he has all of the tools, and he can get the ball in traffic even when he’s being covered by elite cornerbacks. There is a plethora of elite receivers available at this point, so after you grab one of the top ones, stock your running backs and wait until the midrounds of your draft to grab a second and third receiver. Antonio Brown of Pittsburgh could break out; Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson are sure things as long as the Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers is slinging the ball. Brandon Marshall is being reunited with his favorite quarterback, Jay Cutler, and that means big numbers. Marguis Colston is as reliable as it gets -- as long as Drew Brees ends his contract squabble before the season. Brandon Lloyd, ranked 58 last season, is in New England now -- that could mean a monster year, even with Gronk and Welker snagging passes. Demaryius Thomas showed signs of greatness last year and now he gets Peyton Manning to throw to him. If Manning stays healthy -- and that’s a big if -- the numbers should be there. Here are a couple deep sleepers: guys who will be available at the end of the draft: Denarius Moore, who looked good at times for Oakland, and Ben Obomanu, a secret weapon for Seattle. Finally, there is the enigma wrapped in a puzzle by the name of Dez Bryant, who has the skill set to be the next great Dallas Cowboys receiver. This could be his year.
