WATCHING FIREWORKS AND WORRYING I finally figured out the one job people my age are left with. We worry. We worry about our kids, we worry about our grandkids, and the truth is, the older we get, the more we worry. Last Saturday night we were on a sweet little boat expertly captained by my wonderful son-in-law John Kim. We pulled out of the Sag Harbor boat basin and smoothly glided under the Sag Harbor Bridge and anchored where we all could watch the fireworks filling the sky above us. The crew was made up of people I love. My daughter Jodi was happily bubbling with plans for more fun trips, even threatening a day at Splish Splash Water Park, and more and more and more. Her love of life and good cheer is infectious. She and John have three beautiful children, Anabel, Charlie and Maggie. They share their parents’ love of life. My kind, handsome son Michael and his beautiful wife Laurie and their two hunky teenage sons Jack

and William made up the rest of the crew. My wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, and I were given special treatment as valued guests on this voyage. This is the first boat in our family history and I must say I have never been much of a sailor so I was content to cower in a corner and worry about everyone climbing on the rail of the boat and shouting, “Buoy at 11 o’clock” or other seagoing stuff. I worried one of them was going to fall off the boat. I worried I was going to fall off the boat. I worried. At 9:25 the fireworks started. Thanks to Jack and William’s knowledge of Pandora, and the use of a weird-looking speaker, Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” played on this little boat as though Gershwin the master himself had been sent from the heavens to score these particular fireworks from Sag Harbor. I watched the reflection of the fireworks on the faces of my grandkids and that’s when I started

to worry. Let me explain that I’m reading “Goebbels: A Biography” by Peter Longerich. Why? I want to know how these Nazi monsters were able to take over a good part of the world and seduce a lot of good German people into following them as they systematically killed six million Jews. They did it because of weakness. The weakness of Neville Chamberlain, a good man who only wanted peace in the world. Read the book and you’ll see that every concession and every attempt to avoid war made Goebbels and Hitler more confident that they could drag the sleeping German people into war. We face that kind of threat in ISIS and a nuclear-armed Iran. We have Barack Obama, a rank amateur, who just warned that the campaign against ISIS would be a generational struggle. This is the same man who, only a year ago, said he was going to use bombs to “degrade and ultimately destroy” ISIS. Since then they have gotten stronger and more threatening to our lives and our children’s and grandchildren’s lives. Barack Obama is Neville Chamberlain. If you are a Democrat or a liberal you may feel that like Chamberlain, he is a good man who only wants peace in the world. If you feel like some of us do, you may think he is a fool who has no idea what to do.

IN THE NEWS

And like Chamberlain, he is making matters worse. So there I sat on this wonderful little boat, surrounded by my family, worrying. Who will be our Churchill? Will it be Hillary? Will it be one of the many Republicans who are running? Please God, not Donald Trump. What do you plan to do about ISIS and Iran is a question every candidate must answer before we consider giving them the presidency. As I sat and worried, Gershwin’s music ended and then came the next song as the fireworks boomed and lit up the sky. It was Kate Smith, from the generation before me – the greatest generation, which won us World War II – singing: God bless America, Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her Thru the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, To the oceans, white with foam God bless America,
My home sweet home. God bless America,
My home sweet home. It didn’t stop my worrying, but it made me feel happy that I’m an American. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

Opening The Barn Door, Again By Kitty Merrill

T ! EA ES R G LU VA

HURRY IN FOR SAVINGS ON POPULAR SEASONAL ITEMS

Independent/Rick Murphy

Last April town officials were visited by folks from the Suffolk County District Attorneys Office. They came with a subpoena, as reported first by The Independent. Any and all records related to the purchase of what’s now known as Amagansett Farm aka the 555 property on Montauk Highway, had to be turned over to the grand jury. The focus of grand jury probes are highly secretive, but it appears one aspect of the purchase begs questions. The town used Community Preservation Funds to buy a building on the property. Only landmark structures may be purchased with the sacrosanct money, which must be used only for the preservation of open space, historic structures, and farmland. At the time the subpoena landed, Assemblyman Fred Thiele, author of CPF law said, “You can’t buy buildings with CPF money unless you tear them down.” Prior to that, and prior to the purchase, the CPF opinions bureau cautioned against using the money to buy a building. Accessory buildings

associated with ongoing agriculture on a farm may be the exception, but few would call the 8000 square foot structure on the property an “accessory.” Few except Supervisor Larry Cantwell. Earlier this spring, he insisted the building is just a barn. Despite cautions from CPF experts, the town bought the property and building. Then did more. A “Request For Proposals” was issued seeking farmers who might rent the property to, ostensibly, farm it. But at least one respondent had big ideas for the building, too. If selected from the candidates, he’d rent out rooms in the building for office space and use the commercial kitchen for classes, thus turning the huge horse barn into a cash cow – all for an annual rent to the town of $6000. Thiele characterized proposed uses for the building (which shouldn’t have been purchased with CPF money to begin with) “pretty far afield” of the purpose of the law. Under scrutiny of the DA, last week, the town board voted to reject all the RFPs. According to the resolution, the

town rejects the proposals and will instead seek a formal determination from the Opinions Bureau articulating exactly how the building may be used. It’s been suggested the town carve the building out of the entire acquisition, pay the CPF back for its cost, and use the huge structure for the creation of a community center.

Again? East Hampton is no stranger to grand jury investigation into its use of CPF money. Based on The Independent’s months-long look into town finances during the McGintee administration, the DA and Office of the State Comptroller launched its own probe back in 2008. In 2009, after the extensive investigation ended, the then-budget officer was arrested, Supervisor Bill McGintee resigned, and reports from the DA and OSC validated what The Independent had been reporting for months. When the dust settled, auditors determined

the CPF had been looted to the tune of close to $27 million, the money used to cover budgetary shortfalls. Approved by voters in 1998, the CPF is a dedicated fund that derives its revenue from a two percent tax on most real estate transactions in the five East End towns. The money is supposed to be used to acquire open space, farmland, and historic properties. Ten percent of the annual revenue can be used to cover the stewardship and management costs associated with the purchased land. This year the fund, which began amassing money in ’99, hit the billion dollar mark, with more than 10,000 acres preserved. Following the scandal in 2009, state law was amended to ensure such a looting couldn’t occur again. The law was also revised to include the creation of an opinions bureau. The bureau is charged with offering technical expertise related to the use of the fund. All towns have to do is listen.

South Flora Feud Continues

By Kitty Merrill

Neighbors emphasized the sensitive nature of the preserve. Its dunes are fragile and could be subject to a breach should another Super Storm land. Its trails have widened over the last three generations, said one neighbor, while Jonathan Wallace asserted, it’s dune land. His wife, Mary was most emphatic, repeating that the concern for residents of the subdivision alongside the South Flora Nature Preserve is the protection of the environment. “So you’d be okay with people parking on the street as long as the dune is protected?” East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell queried. “No!!” she declared. Wallace’s high volume response offered perspective to the feud that’s been brewing over parking on Dolphin Drive, which is located alongside the South Flora Nature Preserve. Mrs. Wallace wouldn’t want strangers driving through her community, which is comprised of about 12 blocks located to the west of the preserve, on land that

was likely equally-sensitive before dozens of houses were built there. A management plan for the preserve was the subject of a public hearing last Thursday night. Residents of the subdivision spoke out against a provision in the plan related to parking, while other community members spoke of as the public’s right to access public property. The town spent about $8 million to purchase the 37-plus acres back during the Schneiderman administration (2000-2003). The plan calls for no new parking or trails, and maintaining historical vehicular and pedestrian access, said Zach Cohen, chair of the town’s nature preserve committee. Major nature preserves in town include access to the beach. If it were cut off at South Flora, a precedent could be set. The town would create a de facto private beach for Dolphin Drive if access were curtailed, Deb Klughers opined. Her observation was echoed by other speakers, including Jay Blatt of the Montauk Surfcasters who asked the neighbors, “What’s so darn special about your road?”

Independent / Kitty Merrill

The debate over parking near Dolphin Drive in Amagansett continues.

and Brian Buckout of the Citizens for Access Rights who said public access to public beaches is “vital.” Denise Savarese read a letter on behalf of Kate Rogers, a member of the nature preserve committee. She’s opposed to permitting parking on Dolphin Drive and believes it’s out of the scope of the committee to suggest it. Another member of the committee, Reg Cornelia, said Rogers didn’t voice those concerns when the committee voted unanimously to adopt the plan. Invasive black pine that needs to be removed is located right where parking could go, he informed. There’s a potential for 12 cars at

the site, Cornelia offered, asking, “Is that really too many of your neighbors to share the beach with?” It’s “sort of offensive” to imply public presence on public land is injurious, Tom Knobel opined. It’s the town board’s duty to provide an opportunity to access that beach, he said. Jeremy Samuelson of the Concerned Citizens of Montauk suggested the creation of parking might be a back door strategy for making South Flora a public bathing beach. The idea is a non-starter, Knobel countered. Nature preserve status precludes the creation of a CONTINUED ON PAGE 40.

They Ain’t Bussin’ Around By Emily Toy

Nearly 4000 people ride the bus in Suffolk County. Here on the East End, an area where cars can sometimes outnumber their owners, the Suffolk “Blue Bus” still gets working people from point A to B. Scattered across the East End are bus shelters, small structures that serve as designated stops the bus makes on a daily basis. At the end of June, Southampton Town Councilman Stan Glinka launched an “Adopt a Bus Shelter” program for residents, companies and organizations, offering an opportunity to enhance the town by “sponsoring” bus shelters in order to keep them litter-free. “This is a great opportunity for

A Little Noise From The Night Sky

Residents near Gabreski Air National Base may notice increased military aircraft activity and noise at night during the month of July. Members of the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing will be conducting night training using HC-130 search and rescue aircraft. This training opportunity will enhance para-rescuemen’s response and skills needed during peacetime and wartime efforts. Training flying hours will vary. The increased night flying should be finished by the end of July. The 106th Rescue Wing deploys worldwide to provide combat search and rescue coverage for U.S. and allied forces. The wing ‘s mission is to provide worldwide personnel recovery, combat search and rescue capability, expeditionary combat support, and civil search and rescue support to federal and state authorities. The 106th also provides personnel recovery to the state of New York and any deployed operations that they are tasked to support. The wing operates the HC130 search and rescue version of the Hercules transport and the HH-60 Pavehawk search and rescue helicopter.

local businesses and organizations to support the Town of Southampton in keeping the local landscape clean and free of litter,” Glinka said. “Those that participate in the program will receive recognition at their designated shelter for the contribution they are making to keep it clean for all of our residents and visitors.” Currently there are ten existing

bus shelters. The town will seek to enlist residents, companies and/ or organizations that will become sponsors of the program to help with the removal of litter and debris. Any individual business or organization (except for political candidates, political action committees and political campaigns) may become a sponsor. Sponsorship lasts for a minimum of one year.

Pot Pipeline People Popped

By Kitty Merrill

Potent strains of pot grown on farms in Northern California were shipped to Long Island for lucrative street sales. That’s what Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota said as he announced the dismantling of the pipeline from Cali to Long Island, including the East End. A dozen defendants were indicted at the conclusion of a 13-month

investigation that brought together Suffolk County detectives, the DA and the Office of Homeland Security. Among them was Marco Barrila of East Tiana Road in Hampton Bays. He’s the alleged reseller of marijuana shipped to accused kingpin Brian Poole of Bellport. Spota said Poole operated as the head of the scheme that trafficked 960 pounds of high-grade marijuana with a wholesale value of $2.2

million dollars. “Poole arranged the delivery of approximately 80 pounds of marijuana every month to Suffolk County, and he made a profit of between $500 to $800 dollars on every pound he sold,” District Attorney Spota said. The investigation found that Poole, 27, had marijuana shipments mailed to Long Island from the west coast on a regular basis since May 29, 2014.

Officials say Marco Barrila handled the East End part of the pot pipeline.

Poole is a former employee of Barrila’s Hamptons catering business. “These arrests dismantle a multistate drug trafficking organization whose final destination for drugs were the streets of Suffolk County,” Raymond R. Parmer Jr., special agent in charge of HSI New York said in a release detailing the arrests last week. Poole was charged with counts of criminal possession of marijuana and conspiracy, as well as two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Cops found a loaded handgun and a stun gun in his home. Barrila faces charges related to conspiracy. All of the marijuana that made its way to Suffolk County was allegedly packaged by conspiracy codefendant Maigan Rodriguez, 25, in a stash house in Redding, California. Rodriguez, who pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and possession of marijuana charges in the first degree, managed Poole’s pot commerce in California, negotiating for Poole the best purchase price for the highest quality crop, according to the DA. “Over the course of the investigation we learned the most popular strains sought after by Suffolk County dealers and buyers were the exotic strains named ‘Girl Scout Cookies,’ ‘OG Kush,’ and ‘Grand Daddy Purple,’” Spota informed. Investigators were successful in tracking Poole’s pot payments to his California connections, usually by cash withdrawals by pot growers accessing bank accounts in both states under Poole’s control. Poole also used female couriers to fly cash to California. Eric Gomez of Calverton was charged with conspiracy, CPM and tampering with physical evidence. Spota said he tried to flush the Mary Jane when he saw detectives approaching his house. An additional four upisland defendants face conspiracy charges.

Larsen Mounts Primary Challenge By Kitty Merrill

Lisa Mulhern-Larsen, the Republican designee for East Hampton Town Board, has launched a primary for the Independence Party line on the ballot in November. She’ll face Democrats Sylvia Overby and Peter Van Scoyoc, who received the cross endorsement from the Indies earlier this spring. Larsen wasn’t the first candidate chosen for the nomination. Earlier GOP hopefuls bowed out after their nominations, leaving Republican committee members to revise their ticket twice. By the time it was finalized, the Independence Party’s endorsements were in the rear view. A member of the Independence Party since she was in her early 20s, Larsen said this week that she never thought about running for public office until she was approached by party members. When circumstances made screening with the local Indies impossible, she kicked the idea of a primary around with friends, members of the GOP and her husband, East Hampton Village Police Chief Jerry Larsen. “They all thought it was a good idea, they thought I should do a primary,” she said on Monday. “I feel like I’m in touch with the local people,” Larsen said. In fact, she said she’d heard the cross endorsement wasn’t as enthusiastic for the Dem candidates as it was a statement opposed to the initial GOP choices. Overby, an incumbent, said Monday that she’d only heard rumors about a looming primary. “That’s democracy in action,” she

said, adding that Larsen is “doing what the law allows her to do. As long as she’s within the scope of what we’re allowed to do . . . that’s why we just had Independence Day.” “I welcome the challenge,” Van Scoyoc said. “The Independence Party chose to support candidates with experience who aren’t afraid to tackle the hard issues and I feel it was done in a fair and inclusive manner.” “Primaries are healthy,” local Independence Party committee chair Elaine Jones offered. There are currently 1046 registered Independence Party members in

East Hampton Town, making the third party line a valuable one for candidates. Challengers must gather a certain percentage of signatures on a petition to force a primary. In Larsen’s case the number is 55, she said, adding that she’d already collected 65 personally. Friends who are helping out may add more. Jones noted that the signatures could be challenged. If a would-be candidate is not a member of the Independence Party and carries petitions for the line, he or she must be accompanied by a notary. Completed petitions

are due tomorrow and review can commence afterwards.

I-tri’s Triathlon Coming Up

The inaugural Hamptons Youth Triathlon -- a 300-yard swim, 7-mile bike, and 1.5-mile run - will take place July 15 by one of Long Island’s most beautiful bay beaches, Long Beach in Sag Harbor and is designed with safety in mind. This is one of the only youth distance triathlons on Long Island featuring an open water swim (in clear, shallow water). The bike route takes riders on a mostly flat course on wide roads with designated bike lanes and the run is a down and back on a closed course. Open to all youth ages 11 to 17. I-tri, a non-profit organization that works with sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls in Sag Harbor, Springs, Southampton and Montauk, helping them learn about and believe in their own potential by preparing for and completing a youth triathlon, will host and run the race. Many of the i-tri girls who will complete the Hamptons Youth Triathlon on July 15 learned to swim and ride a bike for the first time as they trained for the competition. The program is completely free to all girls selected for i-tri. Register online at http:// itrigirls.org/youth-triathlon/ or arrive by 4:30 PM to do so in person. All racers must be there by 5 PM. The race begins at 5:30 PM.

Campaign 2015

Amos Goodman of Springs, who is running for Jay Schneiderman’s County Legislature seat, certainly isn’t in the closet. He made it clear from the onset that he is gay, which didn’t stop the Republican or Conservative party from naming him their candidate. But a seemingly innocuous Internet post praising the U.S. Supreme Court decision affirming same sex marriages apparently angered some of the Conservative party hierarchy. Saturday it was reported the party executive committee had withdrawn its Wilson-Pakula endorsement that allowed Goodman to appear on the Conservative Party line despite the fact he is not a party member. The move was made despite the fact Goodman’s name was already penciled in on the ballot. Goodman will oppose Southampton Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming, who is running on the Democratic Party line. Frank Dalene of Wainscott has garnered the Independence Party line and will run as well. The door is now open for yet another candidate to emerge if the Conservatives choose to go down that path. Analysts already viewed the 2nd District battle as a tight one, and the surprise decision by the Conser vative Party hierarchy complicates matters further. Edward Walsh the powerful Suffolk County Conservative Party chairman and a lieutenant in the Suffolk sheriff’s department, could not be reached for comment. Walsh is also the New York State Party Chairman and reportedly wields a lot of political power in the state, even influencing the selection of judges. But other local Conservatives said that after the SCOTUS decision there was a negative reaction to some posts made about it on Facebook by Goodman. Goodman said he was “d i s a p p o i n t e d ’ b e c a u s e t h e Conservative committee “sought to focus on the 10 percent of issues

we may disagree and not the 90 we are in sync.” Fleming reportedly said she thought the news would help her candidacy, which drew a rebuke from Goodman, who said Fleming had a “cynical and opportunistic approach to politics.”

More Gunplay On Res For the second time in two weeks gunfire exploded at the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton, and a man was rushed to the hospital with what police said was “shotgun” wounds. The incident occurred shortly after midnight Sunday morning. New York State troopers responded and reportedly found a handgun near the scene of the shooting. The unidentified victim was stabilized at Southampton Hospital and then transported to Stony Brook University. Last week two people who have not been identified were shot and hospitalized. Police have been mum about both incidents, saying they are being investigated.

Another Gun Incident Southampton Police said they received a report that a woman was being held against her will, on June 27. The alleged victim had texted a friend who in turn notified police. Police traced the endangered woman to a car in Calverton, and at about 11:40 PM they approached the vehicle and found her unharmed. Two men who were in the vehicle were taken into custody – Fredrick Pittman, 47, of Calverton, was said to have a loaded handgun in his possession and charged with two counts of criminal possession. Trahmel Thompson, 24, also of Calverton, was arrested on an outstanding bench warrant. Rape Charge In Greenport Southold Town Police charged two Greenport men with firstdegree rape last Wednesday. Jahvan L. Martin, 20, and Tiguan Williams, 21, were taken into custody at a West Street residence after police exercised a warrant there.

RICK’S SPACE Healthy Living The 70s were all about partying and getting high. The 80s was Disco and cocaine. The 90s featured wet t-shirts and Lite Beer (at least the couple months I remember). The 2000s were all about obnoxious 30-something metrosexuals who drink kale latte and give their kids dopey names like Jaden and Riley. The biggest fad nowadays, though, is healthy living. Everyone is getting fit. It’s rather annoying. Remember that beer-swilling guy with the potbelly and the underarm hair that lived down the block? He’s svelte. Remember all those speed freaks with the phony prescriptions whose collagen-lips were thicker than their arms? They’re all running in triathlons now. I, too, have embraced healthy living. In fact, being the trendsetter I am, I have actually created my own

set of exercises to maximize my sveltetoodidness and carve my body into the temple it is today, even if it is a temple of solitude.

Pilates Pilot: The perfect way for repressed Catholics to get a good workout while bemoaning the fact that all the women in our lives are Blessed Virgins, not just god’s mother. Materials needed: two 20-pound crucifixes and a jump rope. Caution: keep the jump rope AWAY from your neck. The Chairmaster: Remember the Stairmaster, wherein some cheeky marketing company devised a way to charge you $29.95 for a plastic step that costs 43 cents to produce? The idea was to step on and off the thing and thus either lose weight or break an ankle, whichever came first. Then came the Doormaster – open the door and close the door and open the door and close the

rsic

door and open the door and close the door. What a life! But nothing beats the Chairmaster when it comes to a quality exercise routine without all the bother of actually doing anything. Materials Needed: One reclining armchair, a 64-inch Samsung HD TV, and a pillow. Caution: Don’t inadvertently smother the baby if she is crying too loud during the ball game.

The Menstrual Cycle Ladies, have you ever used the Soul Cycle or Peloton Cycle? These are intense indoor cycling workouts that have legions of believers. Of course, it assumes you can actually get your rear end on the thing. For those of you who can’t, I have devised the Menstrual Cycle. This is an all-natural sure-fire method of losing weight – every single month. Caution: there is a down side: five to seven days before the weight loss the devil inhabits your body and forces you to spit out pea soup at your husband or significant other. Materials Needed: Croutons for the pea soup. Caution: If you see someone approaching you with a stake and mallet get back in the coffin until the sun goes down. The Anti-Anti-Shoe These hideous shoes are supposed to tone your lower half by creating an unstable sole, forcing your leg muscles to work harder to stabilize each step. Of course, they told us the same crap about Earth Shoes, which were wooden platforms slanted backwards that

IN THE NEWS

made us walk as if we were tilting over — because we were, and that was before the LSD kicked in. Now, Nike offers the Anti-Anti Shoe, which is basically the same ugly Anti shoe except produced by child laborers in Malaysia for 11 cents a day. Bonus benefit: the tiny undernourished little children can actually sleep in the XXL sizes.

Dumba Remember Zumba? It’s billed as a fun and effective workout system that allows practitioners to dance. Listen to Latin music and get in shape without even realizing it. Made famous by J-Lo, who sings off key and dances like a spazz, thus spinning off a new genre, “Dumba.” Now, there is a more intense program dubbed “Dumb And Dumba” – you play Ricky Ricardo music and scream “Loosey, Loosey” over and over again until someone forcefully makes you stop. The Mastic Beach Remember when the South Beach diet was all the rage? Not anymore –it’s passé, replaced by a more enjoyable one. The Mastic Beach diet allows you to eat whatever you want as long as you chew with your mouth open and talk at the same time. For example, get a sausage and pepper parmesan hero, bite off about a third of it, then shout, “You’se don’t know what yas missin’ – this is the best freakin’ workout I ever done!” Materials Needed: A good Italian market and a fifth grade education. Caution: law enforcement officials may consider a good imported salami a dangerous weapon.

EDITORIAL Ms. Liberty Most of us can’t help but feel patriotic on the July Fourth weekend, but national pride ratcheted up Sunday when the U.S. Women went for gold in the World Cup. The team lost to Japan 1-0 four years ago, and there was the feeling the best team didn’t win. Revenge and humble pie have been on the menu every day since. More Americans than ever before tuned into the finale, in addition to traveling to British Columbia to fill the stands. As if by fate, the women didn’t have to compete with the Mets or Yankees for airtime; even the Daytona 500 was postponed during the soccer match, putting our team on Center Stage. Female athletes in the United States too often take a backseat to men, especially when the big bucks beer companies market them as little more than jiggly t-shirt wearers who watch breathlessly as obnoxious male jocks act like clowns. Things are a lot more complex than that. These women handled themselves with grace and aplomb before, during, and after the tournament. Yes, they were sweet and kind – and fierce and tough. As of this writing there is still a Wimbledon title to be won, and an American vying for the trophy. You go, girls! Liberal Claptrap A recent article about 39 traffic violators jailed for driving without valid licenses in Suffolk County contained the usual whining from do-gooders and professional apologists whose anger is tragically misplaced. They complained because the majority of those jailed were illegal immigrants, and that made the practice of jailing repeat offenders discriminatory. “It creates a culture of fear between law enforcement and immigrant communities,” one critic opined. Oh. Arresting people who break the law hurts their feelings. It makes them angry. Oh. First of all, those of us who read the local police blotters know most of those detained for driving without a license are indeed Hispanic. It’s not racist — it’s a fact. Many, one sympathizer complained, can’t get a license because they are here illegally but they have to get to their jobs. What part of this do they not get? You can’t drive without a license in this country! Worse, you probably don’t have insurance either. And chances are you are working illegally to boot. Most of us feel anger, all right – anger that our insurance rates are rising to pay for the deadbeats. Anger that some clown who doesn’t know how to drive smashes into us and has no insurance. That’s the real outrage. People who repeatedly break the law should get thrown in jail, regardless of nationality or race. If you don’t like our laws, leave the country. Justice is indeed blind, and that’s a good thing. Why should there be two sets of rules?

Which America?

To the Independent Editor, At last we see a number of decisions coming out of SCOTUS. They’ve been a long time coming. They were diverse, and as would be expected, were received by each

of our political parties with various degrees of either approval or disdain depending on their advocacy. Following are the five Supreme Court judgments. Ruled in favor of marriage equality giving joy to so many marginalized American couples who can now marry in all 50 states. Ruled in favor of Universal Healthcare Continued on Page 22.

Continued from page 21. (Obamacare) allowing millions of Americans to continue access to a healthier and happier life. Ruled to eliminate an obstruction to voting right thus allowing more Americans the freedom to cast their ballot. Ruled to allow the alternative painful execution drug to be used kill those given the death penalty. Ruled against the EPA Clean Air Act which set limits on the emissions of toxic pollutants from power plants contaminating the air we breath. It is interesting to note the introspection on the part of each party relative to celebrating the SCOTUS decisions above; those of love, happiness and freedom or those of death and illness. Listening to the politicians’, in particular the presidential candidates’ reaction to each of the rulings says volumes as to their values being the priorities of their party. Listen and learn. Military Intervention Letter to the Editor, The conflicts in Syria have increased the complexity of the Middle East and exacerbated the instability in the region. Terrorists have taken advantage of the instability, and have made dramatic territorial gains in Syria and Iraq. They now threaten two minorities, Kurds and Druze. The Kurds, who are non-Muslims, are starting to receive military aid from the U.S., and this should be increased since they are trustworthy and reliable fighters willing to take on ISIS and other terrorist groups. We should send equipment and supplies directly to the Kurds and not through the Iraqi Army. The Druze minority, a Muslim offshoot sect, is threatened by ISIS and al-Nusra. There are 800,000 Druze in Syria with most of them living in the southern province of Sweida, which is near the Israeli border. Israel, which is home to 125,000 Druze who are deeply assimilated into the Israeli military and Israeli society, cannot allow the Druze of southern Syria to be decimated and possibly suffer genocide. Israel should provide a safe Syrian territory for the Druze and equip them so they can defend themselves. If necessary, Israel should provide direct military intervention to protect the Druze of Southern Syria. DONALD A. MOSKOWITZ

Are men better at the BBQ grill than women? Brian Meltzer It doesn’t matter if it’s a man or a woman. Grilling isn’t some innate primal skill that only men have. I’d even give a shout out to some women I know who are great at grilling but I can’t do it without their permission.

Riccardo Freitas Well, I can only speak for my family, and my wife doesn’t like to barbeque on the grill. She doesn’t like to be out in the sun. So in my family, I’m in charge of the grill. But my wife is a good cook and she is in charge of the kitchen. Greg Bonn My wife is in charge of the grill, not me. But I have to say that she’s much better at the grill than she is in the kitchen.

Jay Zawatsky Not on general principle. And what if there’s no man present? And what if the man has no experience? I think it depends on who has the most skills. I know a lot of guys who have no idea how to cook on a grill.

The Night I Rode With Elvis By Linda Strome

A 1950’s summer night in Brooklyn; a Turquoise and White Chevy Impala convertible; a guy named Fabrizio at the wheel. Pulling up to where I was waiting on the corner of Quentin Road and Ocean Parkway, he leans over and says “Get in baby!” Everything was shiny inside this majestic car including the Fab’s hair - a highly glossed “Duck’s Ass” creation - enhanced by his heavy hand of Brylcreem. There was no real conversation, just the Fab’s offerings of a drag on his Viceroy, made meaningful by exhaling the smoke from his nostrils onto my face. But then things changed; the key in the Impala’s ignition was turned; and the radio tuned to WINS, Top 40 Rock & Roll station. That was when the “Magical Night on Ocean Parkway” began . . . as the Impala cruised towards Kings Highway, and the yearning voice of Elvis Presley thrilled me with . . . ”Hold me close, hold me tight Make me thrill with delight Let me know where I stand from the start I want you, I need you, I love you With all my heart” From the core of my being, I WAS holding Elvis close; I WAS feeling the thrill of his “wanting . . . needing . . . and loving me . . .” The Impalas’ symmetrical taillights reflected beautifully on the Parkway . . . approaching Avenue T . . . where Elvis was proclaiming more of his love for me . . . “Every time that you’re near All my cares disappear Darling, you’re all that I’m living for More and more” The aching sincerity in his voice. I was “all that he was living for” . . . fueled my ecstasy of the night’s summer wind. By Avenue U, a soulful Elvis had reached deep into my heart: “I thought I could live without romance Until you came to me But now I know that I will go on loving you eternally” But, it’s when the Impala nears the parkway’s exit onto the Belt,

and Elvis pleads: “Won’t you please by my own? Never leave me alone Cause I die every time we’re apart I want you, I need you, I love you With all my heart” That this Magical Night is lost .. . when out from obscurity, the Fab’s voice asks me . . .“Wanna go to Plum Beach and watch the Submarine Races?” Linda Strome currently lives in Manorville.

Oysters For SHirP The Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program (SHirP) is officially kicking off Operation RESTORE tomorrow at 6 PM. Community members are welcome to grow oysters for the purposes of restoring and nourishing local waters. Each participant will build a set of oyster cages using mesh, zip ties, and floats. Once the cages are assembled, each participant is given seed oysters to place in the cages. Each cage will be labeled with the respective participant’s name to track throughout the season. Eventually, the oysters will be used as part of the ShiRP’s oyster restoration program, and next year, everyone will start out with new seed. The program is slated to take place tomorrow at the Stony Brook Southampton Marine Station on Little Neck Road. A dock will be set up exclusively for the citizen-maintained cages. There’s a suggested donation of $50 to cover the cost of materials. To make a donation, and for more information, visit www.shinnecockbay.org. E.T.

Women’s Day Equality Event

By Miles X. Logan

On Saturday, August 22, at 10 AM, the East End Women’s Alliance, is hosting a Women’s Equality Day at the East Hampton High School, on Long Lane. The topic is Women’s Rights: Choose Them or Lose Them, and speakers will focus on what you can do to defend and secure women’s equal rights. EEWA was founded in 1971 by local residents Cile Downs and Astrid Myers Rosset, and has a 40year history of activism. Following a several-year hiatus, this year’s event is organized in response

to growing urgency about the everyincreasing attacks on women’s personal freedoms, nationally and globally. Women’s Equality Day, recognizing women’s getting the vote in 1920, is a national event established in 1971 by the late Congresswoman Bella Abzug (D-NY) who, along with women’s movement icon Betty Friedan, often appeared at past EEWA celebrations. This year’s honorees include East Hampton’s own Helen Rattray, of the East Hampton Star, Judy Lerner, a long-standing union and peace activist and Bella

Abzug’s replacement at the U.N., Phyllis Chesler, author of the groundbreaking feminist book Women and Madness, and reproductive rights pioneer Bill Baird, whose 1972 U.S. Supreme C o u r t B a i r d v. E i s e n s t a d t decision, cited six times in Roe v. Wade, recognized birth control as a constitutional right for single Americans. Author Paula Trachtman will emcee the event, artist Cile Downs will present a brief history of the organization, and Past National Organization for Women - New York State President Marilyn Fitterman

will speak on the importance of electing pro-choice women candidates at every level, from the PTA to the presidency. As in past years, topical music by Sandy Rapp and the Alliance Singers will enliven the occasion. The event is co-sponsored by East End NOW (National Organization for Women), CUNY Women’s Coalition, and Eleanor’s Legacy. Parents, if you care about the future well being of your daughters and granddaughters, please participate. Admission is free, parking plentiful, seating cool and comfortable.

The victory gave Shelter Island a 16-9 season record, percentage points ahead of Westhampton (1710). Sag Harbor rebounded the next day, knocking off the North Fork 4-2. Tristan Charito laced a two-run single in the seventh to provide the winning runs. His single chased North Fork starter Anthony Catinella (Molloy) and put Sag Harbor (11-16-1) ahead for good. Tyler Radcliffe scattered 10 hits over seven innings of two-run ball to notch the win, his league-best fourth. Vaughn Berberet recorded the final six outs to register the save.

The Shelter Island Bucks are on the move – all the way to first place in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. Last Wednesday the Bucks made it eight wins in their past 10 games, edging out Sag Harbor 2-0. Credit Zack Bahm, a big right-hander out of Pittsburgh who is a sophomore at Columbia. Bahm was nearly unhittable, hurling eight shutout innings, allowing only three hits and no walks. He needed to be good: Sag Harbor’s Nick Kruel was nearly as sharp, and the youngster is no stranger to the mound at Mashashimuet Park — he was born in Sag Harbor and was an all-star for Pierson High. FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

Fantasy Football Strategy 101 If only history repeated itself, but it doesn’t. Yet every year Fantasy Football players make the same mistake – when drafting their team they always pick players who performed the best last season. Yes, it’s one indicator of success, but only one. The top performers change every year. Typically, five of the top 10 players at any given position will fall out of the top 10 the following year. This occurs for a lot of reasons: players are a year older, new players come into the league, injuries, and new offensive coordinators come in and change offenses. The important thing to look at when drafting is trends. Fantasy players who correctly identify how the game is trending typically outperform those who don’t. Two years ago, when everyone was still taking running backs in the first round, the top Fantasy performers took wide receivers – many with their first two picks. One reason is the NFL tightened up tackling regulations for safety reasons. Defensive backs are limited to where they can hit receivers, and how. It’s now illegal to drill a wide receiver when he is defenseless, i.e. in the air going for a ball. Logically, then, teams threw the ball more, and with greater success. That doesn’t necessarily mean the smart Fantasy players will be taking wide receivers early in the draft this year. The reason is simple: as quarterbacks throw more passes, more and more receivers put up elite fantasy numbers. The pool of good players widens. Take a look at last season. A staggering amount of wide receivers – 19 — had more than 1000 receiving yards. A few years back there would have been a dozen or less. A decade ago only a handful would achieve the 1000 mark. There were 22 receivers with at least 80 catches: in a PPR league (Point Per Reception) that is a huge number. What it means is there will be good receivers available later in the draft. Conversely, the number of quality running backs – those who put up elite fantasy numbers – is declining. The main reason is the trend toward sharing time – coaches like two or more running backs: one that is more adroit carrying the ball, and a second who is a better receiver. Employing a running-backby-committee keeps a fresh set of

legs in there at all times and keeps the defenses guessing. The day of “three-down backs” – guys who play the whole game, are ending. Therefore, those who are left should be picked in the first round of most drafts but especially in PPR leagues assuming they can catch the ball as well as run it. The best, on paper, is Matt Fore who set an NFL record with 102 receptions and ran for over 1000 yards. One caveat, though – he’s getting old. Adrian Peterson, suspended last season, is back, and he is one of

www.indyeastend.com

the best pure runners in history. Other blue chippers are Le’Veon Bell, Demarco Murray, Eddie Lacey, Marshawn Lynch, Justin Forsett, Arian Foster, and Jamal Charles. Some of these players come with a caveat: Peterson historically doesn’t catch many passes, Bell will be suspended for the first two or three games, Murray left the Cowboys and signed with Philadelphia, Lynch has carried the ball a ton of times and may be wearing down, and Foster is injury prone. If you can choose your slot in the draft, try and get the sixth or seventh pick and take whichever of these backs falls to you. If you must pick earlier, we advise taking the younger guys, Bell and Lacey and then Peterson. There were 13 running backs who rushed for over 1000 yards last season and some of them hardly

ever catch passes. That means you must grab a good one when you get the chance (round one) and, if another is available in round two, grab him as well. Then take your receivers in the following rounds -- there will be plenty of good ones available.

overstated and the neighbors “can learn to live with it for the benefit of the town,” he said. Cantwell brought the hearing to a conclusion with a reminder. The nature preserve could have been developed with 20 to 40 units. “The town came along and did a good thing,“ he said. Buying the property was a “major step” towards stopping development in a sensitive area. He’d like to see some reconciliation between the nearby residents and community members who want public access protected.

My partner and I held these hands earlier this week at a duplicate game at the Water Mill Bridge Club. Many teams bid 3NT which turned out to be a good contract because the club suit yields 7 tricks. I sat South and was concerned about the heart suit with my void in that suit. In fact, the defense could win the first three tricks if hearts were not so favorably placed for declarer.

As a result of my concerns I insisted on a 5 club contract. In fact, that contract is cold if I had counted my winners instead of concentrating on my losing spades. I could handle 2 spade losers but not 3. I thought I might have a problem if the missing clubs broke 3-1 and I tried to ruff two little spades. Thus my plan was to set up the hearts for discards. I needed entries to dummy and tried to use the ace and queen of diamonds to get to dummy. This meant I had to waste the king of diamonds. As a result of my elaborate plan, I managed to lose a “cold” 5C contract. I should have counted my winners: seven clubs, three diamonds and the ace of spades. I could win the first trick and make my contract before the defense could win the last two tricks. Just draw trumps, play the king of diamonds and lead the 10 to the ace and queen. So much for my elaborate plan! Any questions or comments can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com. If you know some players who want to take intermediate lessons, we will be starting an eight-week session on Monday, July 13 at the Water Mill Bridge Club. Each class will cover a different convention and will run from 10:30 AM until noon. You may call me at 631-766-6656 for more information.

Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica

Drill, Baby, Drill – Reading Weather Reports! OK, how many “hurry-canes” can we get (60 mph winds and driving rain that last 20 gut-wrenching minutes) before we start paying better attention to the weather? And if you had drilled down a little, maybe there was more information that you could have used to your benefit – and an appreciation of the forecaster.

Weather on the Web Clearly, the world is awash in websites that can tell you the weather. Here is just a partial list: www.weather.com The Weather Channel www.accuweather.com AccuWeather www.weatherbug.com The Weather Bug www.wunderground.com Weather Underground http://forecast.weather.gov NOAA Most information providers all have a weather channel – AOL,

Yahoo, etc. Each portrays pretty much the same information that you can get by opening the newspaper over a cup of coffee at the kitchen table. And you may be surprised to know that they all likely get their weather data from the same source – the US’s NOAA – the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. NOAA (www.noaa.gov) is part of the Commerce Department, which says a lot about what government thinks effects business the most! If NOAA’s website has any fault at all, it is how much information you can get from it! But, as NOAA says, “NOAA’s weather programs touch the lives of every American.” Every day, decisions are made based on NOAA weather information – from the mundane ‘Should I pack an umbrella today?’ to the most critical and potentially life-saving. So, “more” is putting safety first. And that is where safety must be.

www.indyeastend.com

If all the services get their basic data from NOAA, why don’t you just go there and get the info? It looks amazingly similar to any of the weather reports you see in the paper or on your internet provider. So, maybe we all just should go to NOAA. And it is free, too! But the real answer, going back to the intro of this column, is you want to be able to drill down and not every weather service gives you that ability.

Drill, Baby, Drill! On any given day, you can get a weather report that tells you the chance of rain is 80 percent, such as March 19, 2009, did. So, if you are planning to do anything outside, you might cancel or move it to another venue. But the 80 percent covers the whole day, i.e. there is an 80 percent chance that it will rain sometime today -- but when?

July 8, 2015

41

At www.weather.com, as an example, there are two ‘buttons’ of interest. Upper left corner says “Details” and along the bottom it says “Hour-By-Hour.” What happens if I drill down on hour-by-hour? Bingo! If you look at the chances of precipitation (just above the graph of temperatures) you’ll see that the chances of rain before 2 PM are about one in three or less! Even by 3 PM, it is even money that no rain has fallen! Drill, Baby, Drill – and how about we get some fishing in this morning? BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing . . .”
