TESTOSTERONE Recent news reports are once again focusing on testosterone as a big factor in the perpetual war that we fight against aging. There has been a great deal of success prescribing it to women. I’m on vacation so I’m dragging out an old column I wrote about testosterone some years ago where I told the inside story on the evils of testosterone and the truth about men. Men are contaminated from the day they reach puberty by testosterone, which causes them to do unspeakable things.
Men think about sex all the time. They just don’t think about sex with their spouses when they think about sex. What I’m about to reveal is word-for-word true. A few years ago, I was driving with a male acquaintance of mine. The subject of marriage came up. My friend, who has been married for 12 years, revealed to me that lately he’s been feeling like he is “cheating.” “What do you mean you feel like you’ve been cheating?” I asked. “Well, ever since I got married to Jane (not her real name), whenever we have sex I fantasize that I’m with

a woman who works in my office.” “You have fantasized about this other woman for 12 years?” “Yes,” he replied. “And now you finally feel unfaithful to your wife for doing that?” I asked incredulously. “No,” he answered. “The fact is that in the last few weeks, I’ve stopped fantasizing that I’m with the woman at my office and now I’m fantasizing that I’m with this beautiful woman who just joined my tennis club, and so I kinda feel that I’m being unfaithful to the woman I’ve been fantasizing about for the last 12 years.” If you’re a woman reading this, don’t make the mistake of asking a man if this is true. He will assure you that it is certainly not true of him. Don’t believe it. Men lie. On the positive side, testosterone increases sexual desire. On the negative side, men will do and say anything while they are under the influence of the testosterone poison. Here’s a joke that most women will tell you is the truth. It sums up the attitude of most men. Not me, mind you. Not politically correct, sensitive-to-afault me. But, alas, just about every other man. It seems this couple occupied two separate beds in their large bedroom. One night they came home and both retired to their beds. The second the light was out, the husband, feeling a surge of testosterone, started his baby talk. “Lovey-dovey, hubby-wubby wants his little sweety-weety to come to his bed. Daddy-waddy wuvs his little sweety-weety.” As the woman left her bed and crossed the room she caught her foot on the rug and she fell flat on
her face. The husband said, “Did loveydovey hurt her pretty little noseywosey? Hubby-wubby is sooooo soooo sorry. Lovekins, sweetheart, let me kiss that pretty nosey-wosey all better.” The woman went to her husband’s bed and they made passionate love. When they were finished, the husband immediately started to fall asleep so the woman climbed out of his bed and headed for her own bed. Once again, in the middle of the room, she caught her foot on the same spot on the rug and fell flat on her face. The husband lifted his head from his pillow and muttered, “Clumsy bitch.” Isn’t it about time that some smart pharmaceutical company came up with a testosterone modifier? A powder a woman could sneak into a man’s oatmeal to have him act like a lamb instead of an ass? Men have discovered Viagra and products like it and they brag and boast to each other about their newfound hardness. But do men really get it? No! They still don’t understand that it’s not about hardness – it’s about tenderness. But testosterone is never about tenderness. As I was writing this, my wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, looked over my shoulder and said, “This is my favorite column. It’s time a man told the truth about men. You’re not like that are you?” I looked her right in the eye and said, “Would I be nutty enough to reveal myself this way if that were true?” Judy left the room smiling. I held my breath until she was gone. That was a close one. For a second I was worried she could hear the torrent of testosterone gushing and flooding through my veins. Deciphering Those Digital Boxes
What are those black-and-white blurred squares that look like digital scrambled eggs on The Independent’s Dining Directory page? They’re QR codes, a new and effective way for businesses to advertise and spread information to potential customers. People can scan the code on their mobile device after acquiring a scanner app, which can be searched for under ‘QR code scanner’ in an app store. The result of a scan can be plentiful, with advertisers choosing where the code will send people who decide to scan, or what info to provide. Restaurants, for example, can send scanners directly to menus, special offers and discounts, or pictures of dishes. Promoters of charity benefits can link to a flyer or website for ticket purchasing, as well as link videos of performers so people can get a taste of what they’re getting for their tickets. In an increasingly digital age, QR are a quick and beneficial tool for businesses and consumers alike. Advertisers may also include QR codes in their display ads. -M.S. Cancer Combatants Awarded $100K
By Emily Toy
“If we put our minds to it, we can do anything.” That’s what Susie Roden, president of the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton
Hospital and vice president of Lucia’s Angels, said about her team being awarded $100,000 last week at a beneficiary luncheon in Smithtown. The grant money was for the
local team “Heaven Can Wait,” comprised of a staggering 75 people, who walked in the annual Li2Day Walk for Breast Cancer back in June. “It’s very emotional,” Roden, a two-time breast cancer survivor,

said of the walk. “It pulls on your every heart string.” The funds will be used to support local East End breast cancer organizations including Lucia’s Angels, the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital and the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center. “Every penny comes directly back to the community,” said Stacy Quarty, president and co-founder of Lucia’s Angels and vice president of the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital. “It’s a truly wonderful organization.” Roden and Quarty have been co-captains of Heaven Can Wait since 2008. Through their joint efforts, they have both been crucial in the creation and success of their respective organizations, reaching out to the community through programs that touch women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and their families, educational programs for the general community and teenage girls, and support groups for breast cancer survivors and their families. “I had a goal of this year for $100,000 and now my goal for next year is $125,000 with 100 people on our team walking,” Roden said. In addition to providing funding for outreach and education for breast cancer patients on the East End, team Heaven Can Wait has built “Lucia’s Room,” at Southampton Hospital. According to Roden, “Lucia’s Room” is used by breast cancer patients that are going through difficult surgeries, palliative care, and/or end-of-life services. It is equipped with the best products and amenities to make it easier and more comfortable for patients and families, she said. Now the team has $100,000 behind it to continue “doing great things.” “Every year we come up with new ideas,” Quarty said. “We’re constantly upgrading and renewing stuff. We do a lot of work together.” Heaven can wait for these angels. They have too much work to do. emily@indyeastend.com

Chartering A New Course By Kitty Merrill
“ . . . Came the last night of sadness, and it was clear she couldn’t go on.” For months after Mike died, Julie Brumm woke up in the morning to Blue Oyster Cult’s classic ode to suicide playing in her head. For thirty years the couple had been inseparable, working together to operate Mike’s successful charter fishing business. After nursing him through three wrenching years of terminal lung cancer, in 2007, Julie was left with no money, no love, and no hope for the future. Fast-forward five years. Captain (yes, Captain) Julie Brumm sailed her first charter aboard the Daylight earlier this month. She’s got a ton of ideas for her business and a bucket load of hope. The course hasn’t been an easy one, but she said during an interview this week, keeping Mike’s memory alive through a life on the sea was something she had to do. Something she’s done thanks to, she drawled with a grin, “the kindness of strangers.” The Brumms came out to Montauk in 1986. “We came for tuna,” Julie explained. They’d originally been commercial bass fishermen, but were put out of business by PCB contamination of striped bass in Sheepshead Bay in the early 80s. Mike’s boat, Daybreaker, was docked on Pier One in Sheepshead Bay across from the Betty W and at Westlake Fishing Lodge in Montauk. In Montauk, Brumm recalled, “Mike fell in love with the fishing and I fell in love with the environment.” A sportswriter for the New York Post, Ken Moran, did an article about Mike, and, “My phone was like this: ring, ring, ring,” Brumm recounted. “He really made us.” With a degree from NYU in broadcast journalism, Brumm pursued her own career paths over the years – she owned a lingerie store in Amagansett, and was executive director of the chamber of commerce, among other things. But the pair often reunited professionally, fishing. “I’d go into it and out of it,” she said. Over time, the couple developed a dual charter business, with one boat in Isla Morada in the Florida Keys and one in Montauk. After Mike died, “I was left broke and broken hearted, with two boats to deal with.” She sold the Daybreaker, a 40-foot Downeaster the couple had docked here. That left the Daylight in Florida. “I had the boat in the Keys without the money to get it here and that’s where it stayed for
three years,” she explained. “But I always had the idea that it’d be wonderful to see Montauk from the water and for people who didn’t understand the water to be exposed to the water planet that we lived on.” As she developed the concept of “sea-cologist” charters, a form of eco-tourism of the sea, Brumm grappled with getting the Daylight north on a shoestring. “A friend of a friend” came to CONTINUED ON PAGE 29.

Roar For A Cure Carnival Set For Saturday By Miles X. Logan
One of the most anticipated and popular events of the summer, the annual Max Cure Roar For A Cure Carnival, is slated to take place Saturday beginning at noon at the Ross School. The Max Cure Foundation is a charity dedicated to advancing cures for pediatric cancers, funding the development of less toxic treatments for children, including the funding of an immune cell therapy lab at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center dedicated to alternative treatments for children battling the disease. MCF provides low-income families emotional and financial assistance and seeks to inspire children afflicted with cancer to face the disease with bravery. It was named in honor of Max Plotkin, a brave youngster who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, B cell lymphoma, on the eve of his birthday in 2007. The foundation was started by his father, David Plotkin, and his grandfather, Richard Plotkin. “I was in hysterics for two weeks” his father recalled in an earlier interview with The Independent. But his despair turned to resolve, and the Max Cure Foundation was
born. The goal is to raise $5 million. “We raised $200,000 the first two weeks,” Plotkin recalled. He walked away from a successful career as a hedge fund manager to run the charity. This year’s honorary chairman is Ray Negron, an executive with the New York Yankees. Negron was caught spraying graffiti on Yankee Stadium as a teenager, but instead of going to jail George Steinbrenner, the mercurial owner of the team, took the youngster under his wing (See our interview with Negron on this page.) Also expected to attended the event are John Franco, the former New York Mets pitcher who is considered one of the greatest closers of all time, and former New York Knicks standout Trent Tucker. This event has evolved into a family favorite for both children as well as, adults. There will be a midway of carnival games, inflatables, mini golf, hoop shot, a mechanical bull, a dunk tank, water wars and one of the hottest games in the “kid world” today, GaGa pits. A giant slide, vertical rush and speed pitch will also be featured. There will be a caricaturist, strolling magician and balloon artist on
hand, too. A popular destination for adults will be the Rejuvenation Spa relaxation tent. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center will also have a

Rechler, 19, of Brookville. Police say Rechler reached into the backseat to adjust a surfboard and crossed over into oncoming traffic. He was issued a summons for crossing pavement markings and one for failure to keep right. No criminal charges were filed. Rechler is the son of developer Mitchell Rechler, who has been working with Southampton Town and Suffolk County on the creation of a business hub at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton. On Friday the Rechler family released a statement, “Our family is heartbroken by this horrific tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Saunders family.” Saunders was also a developer.

His most recent project was the repurposing of the old Plitt Ford property on Montauk Highway in Wainscott, just up the road from where he was killed. Saunders envisioned an upscale market on the site; a pop up Whole Foods is currently occupying the building. Police were called to the accident scene at 11:41 Thursday morning. Montauk Highway was closed almost five hours as rescue crews extricated the deceased from his car, and the investigation into the tragic events commenced. The fatal MVA prompted another collision, as a car travelling behind Saunders stopped suddenly and was rear-ended by another vehicle. Rechler and his passenger Taylor Frank, 17, also from Brookville, were taken to Southampton Hospital, where they were treated and released. None of the occupants of the two cars involved in the ancillary accident was injured. Saunders is the seventh person to lose his life on the roads in East Hampton this year. After the last fatal crash, in East Hampton Town Police jurisdiction, Lieutenant Chris Anderson was unable to find any recurrent theme responsible for the uptick in fatal accidents. He said IndependentAd_July12_Vert.pdf 1 there’s “no rhyme or reason” to it. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Senior Project Gets The Dough By Kitty Merrill
The modular units are on the site and the money’s in the bank – at least one portion of it is. The St. Michael’s Senior Housing Project in Amagansett moved one step closer to reality this week with $300,000 of federal funding provided through the Suffolk County Office of Community Development.

than 30 percent of his or her income toward rent. The project includes a community center. “This project is a model for the kind of development that we want to encourage across Suffolk County for our senior population,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “We must ensure that our seniors have affordable housing options.” “I am pleased to have aided this project, which allowed St. Michael’s to move forward,” said Legislator Jay Schneiderman. “This project gave me a unique opportunity to help secure affordable housing for the elderly, which ultimately will enable local seniors to remain in the community.” After years in the planning stages, officials broke ground for the project last February. Improvements to Montauk Highway near the site were completed and earlier this summer, sections of modular units were delivered from Pennsylvania. Designed with quaint brown shingles and white window casements, the units, once completed will craft a cluster of two story buildings, and a total of 40 650 square-foot apartments. With county money in place, the next hurdle is obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy in time to meet grant deadlines. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Retzky: Now He’s A Genre By Kitty Merrill
The story’s got a bit of a “Telltale Heart” vibe. That’s not exactly surprising. As a child, Allan Retzky was turned on to master of macabre Edgar Allan Poe by older friends. What is surprising is how many decades passed before he could pen his own tale of a man steeped in guilt. This summer just months before his 75th birthday, after a successful career as an international commodities trader Retzky published his first book. Like most labors of love, Vanished In The Dunes was the product of long aborning desire, and hard work. This Saturday at 6 PM, Retzky will discuss Vanished in the Dunes as part of the Amagansett Library’s summer author series. With a lifelong love of writing, Retzky decided, in his late 60s, to go

back to school. He enrolled in the Writers Studio in New York where he took a series of courses “very slowly,” he explained during an interview this summer. Next Retzky applied to Southampton College and was accepted into the MFA program. He enrolled full time, taking just one or two classes per semester “so I could savor it all,” he said, pointing out the experience was nothing like his first college days as a young man. Those days weren’t simple. Retzky was one month shy of his thirteenth birthday when his father died. Looking back across the decades, the author spoke of his father’s death as among the “things that happen that build your character.” When a child loses a parent at a young age, “It has an effect. You don’t have guidance; you have to figure things out on your own.” Retzky figured out how to pull

together the money necessary for a college education. He started to work in the engineering field, but “I felt confined.” “I went back for my MBA and again there was no money.” Having succeeded the first time, he said, “I didn’t think twice about moving my career along.” The next phase, over 25 years an international businessman, he said, “helped me with my writing.” Negotiating with people from different cultures “made me a little more attuned to people’s vulnerabilities.” Amos Posener, the main character in Vanished in the Dunes, “has flaws, but they’re not uncommon flaws.” The path to publication wasn’t quite direct. Having written some short stories, Retzky wanted to craft a novel. He started with what he described as “A vast American novel . . . everything you ever thought about.” Stripping it down, Retzky, took an interaction he overheard on the jitney and “let my imagination run with it.” The result is a page turning tale that went where “the characters took it.” “It turned into a mystery. I wasn’t planning that, but now I’m a genre,” said the author. Retzky’s also joined the “writers who set their stories on the East End” genre. The Portland Book

Author Allan Retzky speaks at Amagansett Library Saturday at 6 PM.
Review mentioned the sense of place as another character in Vanished in the Dunes. “That resonates for me,” Retzky confessed. “It is a part of the story.” And as a longtime resident of Amagansett, Retzky gets those parts right, offering a rare and accurate description of Amagansett and Montauk locales and locals, right down to the cover photo taken by his wife Susan on Marine Boulevard. “My goal is to have whoever reads it to have as much pleasure as I had in writing it,” he summarized. As he speaks of the writing process, how he even learned to enjoy rewriting, it’s clear Retzky has an unfettered enthusiasm for and love of the discipline. Has he ever considered teaching? “Oh, I’m not good enough,“ the author said, “I have the grammar of an engineer.” kmerrill@indyeastend.com

From East Hampton To Ecuador
By Joel Johnson
As I watched tropical rapids carry away my wallet, I found a moment of tranquility to reflect on my journey. It had been exactly two weeks since I arrived in Quito, Ecuador for a Spanish language immersion program, and only one day remained until I would go home. Seeing my driver’s permit, school ID, and debit card float through rough waters, I remembered it all. Most things in Ecuador were pretty similar to the United States. The currency is the American Dollar. People like to watch TV when they
get home. Parties consist of dancing, hot dogs, and (for the older kids, of course) beer. But it was the differences that were most jarring. Ask anyone who has visited Ecuador what the most startling difference was between here and there is, and you’ll probably get the toilet paper talk. In Quito, the entire plumbing system has very narrow pipes. As a result, no toilet paper may ever be flushed. This is by far the most difficult adjustment for an American citizen. Every bathroom in Quito offers a large trashcan and, thankfully, the toilet paper is somewhat scented. Another custom change involves shoes. In many places, if you enter a house, you are expected to remove your shoes. Contrarily, you are asked to keep your shoes on at all times in Ecuador, barring showers and sleep. This comes from the belief that as dirty as your shoes might be, they couldn’t possibly be dirtier than sweaty feet. Unlike the whole “toilet tissue issue,” I really miss this one. My little piggies prefer to remain in their sty, thank you very much. Most of my stay in Quito was spent at school. I was in a group of 10 teens. Collectively we were from most of the northeast, Colorado,

Texas, and Brazil. My actual class consisted of only three other kids. Very personal and very helpful. In the afternoons, we would all take field trips around the city. Some days we would visit Independence Square to hear the president speak, while another trip might take us to a center for underprivileged kids. And always, these trips included a stop at an ice cream parlor. The best trips of my two-week stay were the weekend excursions. For the first week, we went to a town called Mindo. Mindo is famous for three things:
It is a rare biological hotspot. Its cloud forest. (Jungle that always has low-hanging clouds.) Its chocolate factory. Because of these things, we spent the weekend in the jungle river rafting, bird watching, and touring El Quetzal, a restaurant with a famous reputation for chocolate specialties. The next weekend was spent in Baños, a small city named for its famous hotsprings. Here we dove into full-tourist mode. We rode dune buggies around the CONTINUED ON PAGE 19.

town, bought llama-wool blankets, and went to El Paílón del Diablo, an enormous waterfall. And that brings me back to my time of reflection. On the one mile trek uphill from the base of the falls, my wallet slipped out of my pocket and into a stream. So, mouth hanging open, realization setting in, I took time to let my trip flash before my eyes. Seeing my smiling host family’s faces, the parties we had in the school, at a hotel, and on a “party bus,” the never-ending mountains, and the

beautiful academy, I knew it was worth every trial. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The author, 16, attends East Hampton High School.

The Retreat has been selected to participate in Capital One Bank’s first Financial Literacy Challenge on Long Island, an awards program designed to encourage money management best practices among kids and adults throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The Retreat is one of 25 honorees challenged to deliver financial education to populations in need. The Retreat’s long-standing commitment to empowering survivors of domestic violence toward achieving financial self-sufficiency has been recognized as an ambition worthy of a $5,000 award; one which will allow The Retreat to continue implementing its existing financial empowerment program, while integrating content from Capital One’s MoneyWi$e curriculum, according to a release distributed last week. Three out of four Americans fail to connect domestic violence with financial abuse, despite evidence that lack of financial knowledge and resources is the number one reason victims of domestic violence remain in relationships with their abusers. Support from Capital One Bank will afford survivors of domestic violence the opportunity to garner financial fitness and obtain the resources they need to break free, remain selfsufficient, and thrive outside of the grips of violence. “We have seen firsthand that financial abuse can have serious and long term effects on domestic violence victims. Victims can become trapped in a cycle of poverty, feel hopeless, and as a result, suffer unhealthy physical and psychological effects. This project gives our clients the tools to feel empowered and move towards financial independence. We are grateful to Capital One Bank for funding this critical initiative,” said Jeffrey Friedman, executive director of The Retreat. At the conclusion of the challenge in May 2013, two of the 25 grantees that demonstrate the greatest impact on the populations they serve will each be awarded an additional $15,000 grant, with additional awards presented to one outstanding student participant, adult participant, and volunteer for their commitments to the various financial education programs occurring as part of the Financial Literacy Challenge.

RICK’S SPACE I Bleed, Therefore I Rant This isn’t a repeat, so don’t turn off your TV set. Saturday I was opening a jar of artichokes when I inadvertently (It’s always inadvertent, right?) cut my finger. I did this because I couldn’t penetrate the safety seal until I pulled out my sharpest knife. I had just bought a new Hanes tagless tshirt – yes, because Michael Jordan wears them – and mine quickly turned from white to red. The tip of my finger looked like foreskin. It was dangling like a chad. Blood was gushing like water from a fire hydrant in The Bronx on a hot

summer day. I wrapped my last bandage around the finger and headed to the nearest chain drug store. There were beach chairs and beach balls and aftershave and aisles of makeup. They had cereal and milk and frozen foods and potato chips. There were school supplies and candy and magazines and newspapers. After looking for 15 minutes I finally asked the pharmacist where the bandages and adhesive tape were located. “Right down there at the end, on the right.” He said. No, these are Ace bandages.

I went back to the pharmacist and held up the bloody stump. “I need bandages!” I said. “I guess we’re out,” he replied, turning away. In disbelief, I went up to the woman in front. “I need bandages and adhesive tape,” I said with an urgency in my voice that comes with knowing that blood comes in limited quantities, and like oil, when it is drained, the engine stops. “Aisle 11”, she said confidently. I marched over – heating pads. Now I’m getting mad. It’s a freaking drug store. I’m looking for bandages. There should be a section devoted to Band-Aids, bandages, antiseptic ointments and the like. I asked a Latino lady, ”El Bandito este stickio tapeo?” Bingo! After looking at the bloodbath that was my hand, she brought me over to yes -- bandages. Tragedy narrowly averted – thank god I’m fluent in Spanish. The next day I had a similar shopping experience, that is to say an unpleasant one, at Wal-Mart. I needed a new microwave, because my current one works only when I take a screwdriver, stick it inside, and turn a steel knob. This petrifies Karen, who’s convinced I’m going to get electrocuted. (I do get a shock, but I figure it’s good for my heart.) The trouble was none of the microwaves had any prices on them. There was a guy standing five feet away who worked there. “Excuse me, how much are the microwaves?” “I don’t work in this department.” “Then why are you standing here?” “I’m on my break,” he answered Now that’s an empty, lonely life -you get 15 minutes off from work and the best idea you can come up with is to stand in the microwave aisle? “OK. Who works in this department? “Nobody, I think.” You can’t make this stuff up. I go get a manager. “I need a price on a microwave, I said. “The associate in that department will help you.” “No, he doesn’t know anything

about microwaves.” “Just bring it up and we’ll scan it at checkout.” Oh. I get it. I’m going to drag this 80 pound box up to the front of the store with my prickly pulsating pointer pulsing my boiling blood, wait online 15 minutes, and then hope I can afford to buy the freaking thing. No thanks. We went to Best Buy and picked one up there. I carried it out to the truck, finger barking like an enraged dog face-to-face with a feral cat. Then I had to get it inside when I got home. By the time I moved my old one and unpacked the new one, my fickle, floundering, floppy, flappy finger was in need of an amputation. Still I struggled on, only to find out the new unit not only didn’t close, but it had a dent. So I had to re-box it, carry it out to the car, and get the old one back up on the counter. Then it was time to cook dinner, and I managed to cut a second finger because I was holding the knife awkwardly because numbness had set in. By the time dinner was over I was as pale as a vampire with a wired jaw and my mangled forefinger was drooling like a starving infant in a Gerber factory. Only then did Karen notice something was amiss. “Are you OK?” she asked for the first time in two days. “I held up the finger – the tip looked like a pit bull had been chewing on it. “Jeez, you better wear rubber gloves when you do the dishes -- but don’t use mine.” What was it Rodney Dangerfield used to say? That night it hurt so bad I got a jar of ice cubes to soak it in. Being it was pitch dark, I didn’t notice the blood on the brand new duvet cover and the Ralph Lauren white pillows. Karen noticed, though, I could tell by the piercing wail I heard the next morning. As I type this (with one finger) I am no longer bleeding, but though I’m at work I’m really in the proverbial doghouse. I’m just hoping Karen doesn’t see the white er red bath towels she just bought for the bathroom.

When Will It Stop? In the wake of yet another traffic fatality – this one in East Hampton – it’s time to start taking a hard look at what is happening on our roadways around here. Without casting any aspersions, these are some general observations: to implement change, law enforcement is going to have to get more aggressive. People are going too fast. There aren’t enough speeding tickets being given out, period. Cement mixers, garbage trucks, and other heavy vehicles, need to be driven more carefully. Start reporting drivers to their company and the newspapers if you see them operating their trucks in a dangerous manner. People continue to make left turns onto dangerous roadways. We’ve all seen this phenomena – traffic backs up while some clown tries to make a left onto Montauk Highway, when a right hand turn is much safer. Simply go up to the next crossing road and turn around. Left-hand turns at certain intersections, like Stephen Hands Path and Montauk Highway (a scene of several fatal accidents over the years) should be made illegal.

Dear Editor, Why did you give Altschuler free advertising on the front page of your August 1 edition? His attacks on Tim Bishop and his family are the typical negative tone of Republican candidates. Tim Bishop has done more good for our district over the years. Randy is an outsider. I wonder why he is running – perhaps to vote with the other Republicans to keep taxes obscenely low for the super rich like himself? ED JABLONSKY Editor’s Note: A respected watchdog group criticized the Congressman for having his daughter on his payroll. That’s called news. A more objective person might ask why the other liberal-leaning newspapers ignored the story.
What’s the Harm? To the editor, I just don’t get it. Tell me what is the harm in having your daughter as head of fundraising? There is no federal law against it as this is a job funded totally by political contributions, not taxpayers. And if having family members on the payroll of a college institution is so bad, why are they still there working for other administrators? Maybe because Randy Altschuler has no issues and he needs to manufacture one. Oh, I get it. If you want to pay as little taxes as possible and you are only concerned about yourself, if you want the government out of your life as much as possible so you can run a business to do anything possible to make as much money as possible, Randy is your man. Tim Bishop cares about people. He has served his district well for many years and shared our concerns with government officials in many areas. Above all he is
Ticket tailgaters. We suspect this is one violation that local police hardly ever issue a ticket for, yet there are numerous rear-enders. Between the deer and the cellphones, tailgating is one distraction away from becoming a serious accident. There are too many people driving around out here without licenses and insurance. Quit the politically correct nonsense and get them off the roads — and that means the courts have to get tough. Knock these aggressive SUV drivers down a notch. They can be arrogant, and even the cops seem to look the other way sometimes. When they pass on the right or make a U-turn pull ‘em over, and if they give you any lip, throw them in the clink and impound their Land Rovers. Speaking of enforcing existing laws, it is commonplace to see people driving and talking on their cell phones, often times right through the villages, right under the noses of police. It’s time to get tough on them. Everybody needs to calm the hell down. Listen to some soothing music. Relax. Traffic is a way of life out here. Stop rushing and learn to enjoy the moment. The life you save may be your own.
thoughtful and open to compromise. Our country has major problems and will only create solutions if people listen to reason. We do not need another un-compromising addition to gridlock. Vote for Tim Bishop in November as your only reasonable choice. MICHAEL AXELRAD
Guarantee Needed Dear Editor, Randy Altschuler is not pro-women and his campaign manager does not prove otherwise in her letter to you last week. Mr. Altschuler is against the Affordable Care Act which he and his Republican cohorts call Obama Care. The health care law protects women. Devotion to one’s mother, a happy marriage, love of daughter and the hiring of female staff does mean that Mr. Alschuler cares about women’s rights. If he did, he would not be against the health care law which guarantees all women the right to cancer detection
tests without co-pays such as Pap smears and Mammograms as well as birth control counseling. These medical services protect women’s lives and should be guaranteed all of them. DAVID J. WEINSTEIN
Protect All Wildlife Dear Editor, In light of a recent study by the University of Georgia which found that cats who are allowed outdoors likely kill billions more birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians every year than previously estimated, I urge readers to protect wildlife and their feline family members by keeping cats indoors. Domesticated cats aren’t native wildlife, and they don’t have a place in the predatorprey chain. No matter how well-fed they are, cats’ instinct to hunt remains intact. Many of the species they kill are already struggling to survive habitat loss and are virtually defenseless against such predators. Continued on page 24.

Every year, countless cats are killed by cars, poisoned, attacked by other animals, sickened by contagious diseases, stolen for experimentation, and worse. For the sake of wildlife and our cats’ own safety, let’s keep our animal companions indoors and allow them outdoors only on a leash and harness or in an enclosed area, under constant supervision. It fits right in with other similar aberrations famous and interesting conspira-sational theories like 9/11 being an

Why do girls love Justin Bieber so much? Jane Becker I don’t really like him so much but my friend does. She wrote “I ‘heart’ Justin Bieber” on her school folder. She thinks he’s really cute and she says she wants to marry him. She says it all the time! I don’t like his songs that much. I like Maroon 5. Megan Ryan I really like his music. And I like how his favorite color is purple, and how it represents him. And he wears purple jeans a lot of the time. He has great hair! His hair is so silky I just want to touch it! “Baby.” I like the chorus of the song a lot. Lilly Frontero I like his music a lot. My favorite song is “One Less Lonely Girl.” And he’s really cute. And he seems like he’s a really friendly person. Even though he’s so incredibly famous he still seems like he’s a really nice, normal person. Annie Ryan I don’t really like his music. But he and his mom were on welfare or food stamps when he was younger, and he came from a small town in Canada but he made it big. He’s still close with his mom but his dad didn’t come back until he made it. That’s kind of shady.

Give it up already; the guys is black and he can’t take it back. It’s like just another shade of gay who will stay that way. (Tried but couldn’t resist) Can anyone with a straight face claim that President Obama was, and is not still being vetted? Millions upon millions have been and are being spent trying to expose or if not, at least paint our President as a foreign born Kenyan, Socialist, Communist, Atheist, Any-ist, or even Nazi: anything “unAmerican,” by the Trump-etierrs and his like. The “Birther” mentality is still alive and well living embarrassingly transparent. I read Mr. Pal’s Letter concerning “Jobs.” It was lucid, factual and sad to realize that any party would sacrifice their very country in order to gain control of it. That the writer managed to segue that Letter into his dark and devious scenario is a credit to American determination and dis-ingenuity. I‘m sure there is a following for this sort of rubbish. Disappointed In Dolan Dear Editor, I am disappointed that New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan has scandalously decided to invite President Obama to the annual Al Smith dinner in New York City on October 18. Obama has proven himself, despite promises to the contrary, to be a militant adversary of the Catholic Church. His anti-life policies and mandate to suppress religious freedom in America is legendary. Obama plans on using the Catholic gala as a photo op to sow bewilderment and score political points with Catholics who oppose him. Obviously, Cardinal Dolan is too busy drinking beer, engaging in self depreciating jokes with the public and just generally enjoying the limelight and all that goes with being the head of the most prestigious Archdiocese in the U.S. to see that President Obama is just playing him for a fool. NY Governor Andrew Cuomo did the same thing last year when he managed to get Dolan to back off and leave town before signing his same-sex marriage bill into law through somewhat shady politics. Many people see Dolan as a leader and major player in the fight for religious freedom. Obama more astutely sees the Cardinal as a stand-in for PT Barnum’s quip “There’s a sucker born every minute!” PAUL KOKOSKI

the rescue, trailering the vessel to Montauk in 2010. “Then the fun really began,” Brumm recalled. Daylight was in need of some TLC and Brumm lacked the bankroll she’d need. Along came another kind stranger, a mechanic by the name of Ryan Persan. “Without him I wouldn’t be in the water today.” Supporting herself doing PR, Brumm said that some days “I’d just sit on the boat and cry.” Over time, Daylight was made ready and this summer it was put into the water at Montauk Marine Basin. Carl Darenberg was no stranger to Brumm -- they’d been friends for years -- but he had the kind part down. “Carl’s supported me in my venture and the idea of bringing the water world to people,” Brumm said.

Brumm envisions several types of charters. They include classic inshore sportfishing, specialized fishing for women only, a basic historical sight seeing cruise that would focus on the ecology of the area, and another entitled “Mermaids, Myths And Magic.” During the latter cruise, “We’d talk about the history of mermaids, whether they’re real or not, and of course hunt for the elusive Montauk Mermaid,” she said, eyes sparkling. “It was last reported seen at the Montauk Marin Basin.” (Some say Darenberg spends every night searching for her.) With a successful first fishing charter under her belt and another eco-cruise in the offing, Brumm’s got lots to be thankful for and excited about. Mike is still with her; she feels him in quiet moments, like when she was unraveling rope on the dock
the other day. Her life with him, that most of her life was spent with him, is woven into the fabric of her being and memory. Some songs still trigger a moment of sadness,

Negron
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10.
summer day 40 years ago. He was, in fact, spray-painting graffiti on Yankees Stadium, no less, with some of the other kids in his Bronx neighborhood. “Everyone started to run, but this man caught me,” he said. Negron found himself in a holding cell in the bowels of the old stadium, waiting for the police to come get him. “A squad car came to get me. I was on my way to central booking when the man came back and said, ‘Give me the kid,’” Negron related. Next thing he knew he was in the Yankees’ clubhouse and Pete Sheehy, the same clubhouse manager who tended to The Babe and DiMaggio

and Mantle, was there. “Get this kid a uniform – he’s got damages to work off,” the man said in an authoritative voice. The man was George Steinbrenner, the mercurial owner of the New York Yankees. And Ray Negron, 16 at the time, has been working for the Yankees ever since. “George became like a father to me,” Negron said, noting he moved to Tampa to be near Steinbrenner. “He played a legend in New York, with his sunglasses and all. But in Tampa he was an incredibly beloved figure. He treated me like a son.” Negron brought up a family of his own, with Steinbrenner acting as a surrogate grandfather to them. Over the years Negron became friendly with many of the team’s stars. Thurman Munson was “like a big brother. He was a major influence on my life.” Negron became very close with Reggie Jackson, a friendship that has endured. “He’s my son’s godfather,” he related. Negron became very close with Billy Martin, the volatile manager who often clashed frequently with Steinbrenner. “Billy had an incredible heart. With him and George it was like having two fathers. Billy didn’t care about age or color – he made you feel like you were somebody. If he was having lunch with Sinatra he’d say, `Ray, why don’t you come along?’ So I’d have lunch with Sinatra.” Negron has told the tale of his years with Steinbrenner and The Yankees in his new book, his fourth, entitled Yankee Miracles: Life with the Boss and the Bronx Bombers. It’s about to be released, and tells the tale of the spray-painter turned Yankees batboy who grew into an executive, an actor, and an author. Negron will be on hand Saturday for the Roar For A Cure Carnival (See accompanying article in this edition) as honorary chair. It’s all part of giving back, he said. “I know how blessed I am. I learned from them – Billy, George, Reggie, they always extended hands to kids. I always go to the hospital and bring the players along. I tell the players when you put that uniform on you become like Superman to those kids.”

Supply Drive Assemblyman Daniel P. Losquadro is holding a back-to-school supply drive to help prepare local students with the necessary materials they need for their education. The effort to provide school supplies to children and families in need is organized in conjunction with parish outreach centers and not-for-profit organizations from northeastern Brookhaven Town, Riverhead and Southold. After the materials are collected, Assemblyman Losquadro and his staff will bring them to the outreach centers and not-for-profits, where they will then be given to families in need. “As many families are currently struggling to pay bills and put food on the table, providing their children with the supplies they need to start the school year will be one less thing for them to worry about,” Assemblyman Losquadro said. “When children know they are heading into school prepared, it allows them to focus on their studies and become better students.” Supplies can be dropped off at Assemblyman Losquadro’s district office, located at 400 West Main Street, Suite 201. The back-to-school supply drive will be in place weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM from today through August 31. For directions on how to get to Assemblyman Losquadro’s district office or for further information, call 631-727-0204. School Bus Demolition Riverhead Raceway will be the scene for its annual School Bus Demolition Derby Saturday beginning at 5:30 PM. Admission is $27 for adults and $5 for kids six through 12. Southampton Breakers Fall In Semifinals By Rick Murphy
Alas, the joy ride the Southampton Breakers were on has come to end. The locals, who earned the Hamptons Division title in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, lost in the semifinals to the New Jersey Eagles on August 4. The Eagles went on to take the league title the next day. The Breakers, playing before a home crowd at Stony Brook Southampton, couldn’t get to Brian Drapeau, who dazzled for eight innings. The Eagles, meanwhile, got to Paul Paez, the Breakers lefthanded ace, for three runs in the
sixth inning, giving the team a 4-2 lead it would never relinquish. Paez (8-3), walked Stanley Paul to open the inning, gave up a single to Kyle Grimm and another single to Tyler McCarthey that plated a run. Chris Smith then doubled, knocking in two more. The home team scored in the first inning, courtesy of a Robb Scott’s single that drove in Vinny Zarrillo, who doubled to lead off the game. Smith homered in the second inning to even the score at one. Drapeau, (3-2) walked four straight batters in the third but wiggled out of trouble by inducing

a double play. That set the stage for Smith’s game winning double in the sixth. The Breakers rallied. In the seventh Brenton Allen delivered an RBI single to make it a one-run game. In the ninth the locals put two runners on but the lefthander Rich Anastasi, brought in to replace
Drapeau, quelled the uprising and earned a save with two strikeouts. The Eagles, from Bergen County, finished with a 25-23 record after losing nine of their first 12 games. Scott, playing his third and last year for the Breakers, set the HCB career records for runs scored and hits and games played.

The Dangerous Dock If I told you that statistics on boats sinking showed that the dock is four times more dangerous than the open waters, you might tell me to check my calculator, amongst other things. But study after study show that four times as many boats sink at the dock than underway. Why is that?
Buying Time Remember, bilge pumps don’t save boats. They buy you time. Time for what? Well, again, the statistics say that boats sink at the dock for two major reasons. Half the time a thru-hull fitting gives up the ghost and water eventually overwhelms the battery/bilge pump arrangement. Check the thru-hulls
with every lay-up. And check the screws around them. If the screws rot away (* see footnote below), it is another place for water to enter that isn’t so obvious. But it will add up. The second most common source of sinking at the dock is snow and rain (30 percent). I had one happen to one of my boats because the self-bailing scuppers clogged from leaves. Rain followed, and followed, and followed, until I had a submarine! Many skippers believe biminis and canvas covers prevent water from entering the boat. Wrong again -- they slow it, but don’t stop it. In the winter, stow them someplace dry and shrink wrap the boat.
Locally Owned & Operated
Over 80 percent of boats sink for two reasons – all of which adds up to checking the boat from time to time, or paying the dock hand to, or your teenager who wants some extra spending money to go with his or her new driver’s license; but check it. Would you leave a box with $20,000 unattended on your lawn for months at a time? If four out of five boats sink at the dock, what about that other boat? Well, that is a story for another time – and soon. * Marine screws don’t rot. They get eaten away by electrical charges in the water. This is due to poor “galvanic isolation.” More on that in the days ahead.

Real Time Reactions There are lies, damn lies, and statistics . . . If you are underway and you see water coming up from below, you are going to do something about it right away. Thus, the underway problems are going to be dealt with in real time and the odds are way in your favor that you can save the vessel, even if you have to drive her on to the beach to do so. But why do so many boats sink at their docks? Why didn’t the bilge pump save her, to start with? Many people believe “Big boat, big bilge pump. Little boat, little bilge pump.” Wrong. Big boat, lots of bilge pumps. Little boat, BIG bilge pump.
You need to get the water out of your 17-foot Seahunt as fast as possible. Five hundred gallons per minute isn’t half as good as 1000 GPM. It is less than half as good because, once she goes down, no bilge pump can re-float her. And experts estimate that it costs 40 percent of the original value of the boat to re-wire her and restore the engine. Oh, and throw out the radio, GPS and fish finder. So, your $20,000 17-foot Seahunt will cost you as much as $8000 to repair/ restore versus the $200 1000 GPM bilge pump. Is she worth that much today?

Turnover Time For Olympics I saw it everywhere; Facebook, Twitter, ESPN, Yahoo, you name it. Every media outlet reminded me as I woke up on Sunday morning that I should be watching USA Basketball take on Spain for the Olympic gold medal. But, I just couldn’t generate the enthusiasm to watch. Is that un-American of me? Maybe it’s cynical, but Olympic basketball gives me more headaches and concern than joy and excitement. Twenty years ago the USA “Dream Team” proved to the world that basketball was our sport. Since 1992, the United States basketball team has won gold in every Olympics, except for 2004. That year the USA lost to Puerto Rico and Lithuania in pool play, then fell to Argentina in the semifinals. As a fan, there’s admittedly some arrogance with USA hoops. But even as the 2004 team settled for their bronze medals, I still wasn’t convinced they weren’t the best collection of basketball players the
REAL ESTATE

world had to offer. After getting the gold in 2008, this year’s US team appeared to be going through the motions far too often. I don’t think it was disrespectful to the nation. It was human nature kicking in, knowing you’re part of the best collection of basketball talent on one team since the legendary 1992 squad. If you’re a Brooklyn Nets or NY Knicks fan, you watched these Olympic basketball games while holding your breath. Both teams’ best players, Deron Williams a n d C a r m e l o A n t h o n y, w e r e participating. If either team has hopes of a serious playoff run, these two stars will have to be healthy and dominant. After a great offseason, we Nets fans are desperate for a postseason berth. Rather than enjoying the international play, I found myself cringing at the possibility of Deron Williams injuring an ankle or knee. Sure, that’s selfish.
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
The enjoyment I’ll receive from seeing the best in the NBA from November to June far outweighs an exhibition game against Spain in mid-August. Knick fans’ hearts must have skipped a beat when Carmelo Anthony took a knee to the hip while taking a jumper from the right wing. Anthony spent a few minutes limping on the court and trying to shake it off. It wasn’t serious, but it was a brief glance at what could have been a serious injury. I have great interest in the traditional Olympic sports of track and field, swimming, diving, etc. For the athletes in these sports, competing in the Olympic Games is the pinnacle of achievement. However NBA players are paid millions by teams, and indirectly by fans, to win an NBA title. While I enjoyed seeing LeBron & Co get giddy after beating Spain for the gold medal, I couldn’t help but be happy it was over. There were no major injuries that could have thrown a wrench into an NBA fan’s season. Including the “Dream Team,” the USA has won five gold medals in basketball in six chances. Outside of a couple of losses and a few close calls, it’s time for the NBA stars to
IN THE NEWS
hang ’em up. How about changing the US selection process and using only first round picks from the most recent NBA draft? It would give these athletes great experience, and their enthusiasm would likely be outstanding. NBA fans would get a look into the future of the league and no longer cringe every time a $7 million player pulls up lame. Fishing Report Where Are The Fish?
Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean Fluke bite has been best in the bay. The high water continues to be the best point in the tide to target them. Working the edges of the east channel with small bucktails has produced some good fish. Most anywhere in the bay you will find fish but you will have to cull through them to get a keeper. The bait of choice has been spearing. Those who have chosen the live killies have done well too. The ocean bite has been tough. Best ocean species to target is seabass out on the reef, add a fluke bait to the drift and some have been lucky. The blues are on the massive amount of bait moving all around Shinnecock. Some striped bass have been caught on the night tides with both fresh chunks and live bait. The area ocean beaches have been very quiet with the exception of some fluke and sea robins.
