TIME FOR “DEMOCRATS FOR ROMNEY”
Why not? Almost all of my friends are Democrats; all of them voted for Barack Obama in 2008. Ask them these days, as I have, if they plan to vote for Obama this November, and they’ll give you an “Oh shucks” sad smile, look down, look back up with guilty eyes and say “I’m disappointed.” Then they play the party line and say, “But Romney? But Ryan?” I’m not talking about those African Americans, Latinos and lockstep Democrats who’ll blindly vote for Obama no matter how high
unemployment may be or what shape this country may be in. I’m talking about a good number of intelligent, caring, middle-class Democrats who are a soft nudge away from casting their vote for Romney. All they need to know is they’re not alone. Democrats were disappointed in 1980. They’d had, under President Jimmy Carter, four years of inflation, unemployment and gas rationing. Yet, when asked, they said, “But Reagan?” At this point in 1980, Carter was

nine points ahead of Ronald Reagan in the polls. Reagan had been slimed by the press and pro-Jimmy Carter forces as being dumb and bumbling. Sound familiar? Carter treated Reagan as a ridiculous figure who, among other things, was ignorant of details of nuclear-weapons policy. Reagan promised economic growth and asked Democrats, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” In the end, Reagan proved that his brand of good-natured conservatism could win by a huge margin. But a lot of credit for the win must go to “Democrats for Reagan.” Who were they? Well, Wikipedia says: “They were mostly white, socially conservative blue-collar workers, who lived in the Northeast, and were attracted to Reagan’s social conservatism. “Stan Greenberg, a respected Democratic pollster, analyzed white, largely unionized auto workers in suburban Macomb County, Mich., just north of Detroit. The county voted 63 percent for John F. Kennedy in 1960 and 66 percent for Reagan in 1984. He concluded that Reagan Democrats no longer saw Democrats as champions of their middle-class aspirations, but instead saw the party as working primarily for the benefit of others, especially African Americans and the very poor. “Democrat Bill Clinton targeted the Reagan Democrats with considerable success in 1992 and 1996.” Here’s an example of a commercial that would win Democratic votes for Mitt Romney and maybe turn the election his way: It would use Democrats who’ve actually decided to vote for Romney.
IN THE NEWS
It would be word-for-word true, though soft in tone. It would come as a welcome relief for voters of both parties who’ve had it up to here with negative false commercials. (The “Mitt Romney killed my cancerstricken wife when he was at Bain Capital” is the best example.) The commercial would open with a man, about 40, sitting in his living room with his wife and kids seated next to him. He looks into the camera and says: “I’ve voted Democratic all my life. In 2008 I voted for Barack Obama. It was a vote I am proud of. I wanted to be part of the generation that voted a black man into the presidency of the United States. It was the right vote for the right reason. But, sadly, it was for the wrong man. “I don’t think this country can survive four more years of Barack Obama as president. I know my family can’t. I lost my job two years ago, and I fear I’m going to lose my house. “Mitt Romney has the business experience to bring back our economy fast. He has my vote.” Other Democrats for Romney commercials would feature: • A woman who wanted Hillary Clinton in 2008 but voted for Obama in the general election. • A middle-class African-American owner of a declining small business. • A student who enthusiastically cast his first vote in 2008 for Obama but hasn’t been able to find a job since then. Etc. etc. etc. Again, these commercials wouldn’t slam you in the head but deliver a soft nudge to Democrats who, in their heart of hearts, know that four more years of Barack Obama’s anti-business, share-thewealth policies will cripple this great country we all love. My article, Time for “Democrats for Romney,” was first published in The New York Post on Aug. 17. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@dfjp.com.

Deciphering Those Digital Boxes
What are those black-and-white blurred squares that look like digital scrambled eggs on The Independent’s Dining Directory page? They’re QR codes, a new and effective way for businesses to advertise and spread information to potential customers. People can scan the code on their mobile device after acquiring a scanner app, which can be searched for under ‘QR code scanner’ in an app store. The result of a scan can be plentiful, with advertisers choosing where the code will send people who decide to scan, or what info to provide. Restaurants, for example, can send scanners directly to menus, special offers and discounts, or pictures of dishes. Promoters of charity benefits can link to a flyer or website for ticket purchasing, as well as link videos of performers so people can get a taste of what they’re getting for their tickets. In an increasingly digital age, QR are a quick and beneficial tool for businesses and consumers alike. Advertisers may also include QR codes in their display ads. -M.S. For more dining see our Dining Section inside B-Section. The Independent will provide you with a QR code.

Bar Mitzvah Gate
Bishop Accused Of Soliciting Funds For A Favor
By Rick Murphy
Congressman Tim Bishop is in hot water again, this time because his camp apparently solicited a huge contribution from a constituent who asked for a favor. A new firestorm has raged since last Wednesday, after Politico, a political newspaper and website started by two Washington Post editors in 2007, said Bishop violated house ethic rules by soliciting a contribution from Eric Semler, a wealthy Southampton hedge fund manager. State GOP leaders are calling for a congressional probe into the matter. Several Washington insiders said Bishop is guilty of an ethics violation and could face criminal charges as well. Semler planned to throw his son a Bar Mitzvah complete with a Fireworks By Grucci display on May 26. According to the published report, Grucci informed Semler on May 21 that it had not received the necessary approvals – one problem was nesting Piping Plovers, a protected species, at a nearby beach. Semler called Bishop, who agreed to intercede, according to documents obtained by The Independent. Semler wrote him a letter of thanks after the fireworks display stating “I can’t believe we pulled this
off . . . your relentless focus on the task was so impressive.” Though Bishop has denied a quid pro quo existed between his intervention and Semler’s donation, just two days before Bishop helped obtain clearance for the fireworks display his daughter, Molly Bishop, sent Semler an email. The Independent has obtained a copy. “We are going to be in a tough, expensive campaign and so we are very grateful for your willingness to be of help. If you make a contribution before June 26th you and your wife may each contribute up to $5,000; after June 26th the most you can each contribute is $2,500.” The Bishop camp called the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service the same day on Semler’s behalf, according to a USFWS biologist. According to an e-mail from a Grucci executive, Bishop personally met with a USFWS regional director on the morning of May 24, although that could not be confirmed – the Bishop camp isn’t answering questions or returning emails, uncharacteristic behavior for Bishop, who is usually upfront and accessible to the press. It is illegal for a sitting congressman to solicit a contribution for performing an official function. A $5000 contribution from Semler and his wife appears on Bishop’s
Plovers? What Plovers? By Rick Murphy
It appears Tim Bishop spent the days before Memorial Day weekend working frantically to grease the skids for a constituent, Eric Semler, immediately after his daughter Molly Bishop asked Semler for a large contribution. According to documents obtained by this newspaper he apparently voiced little or no concern for an active Piping Plover nest just yards away from the fireworks site. Semler was dead set on having Fireworks By Grucci put on a show in honor of his son’s Bar Mitzvah. But the existence of the Piping Plover nests perilously close to the site gave pause to a number of agencies that had to give their approval. That’s when (on May 21) Semler asked Bishop to intercede. The fireworks were originally going to be set off from a barge on Fairfield Pond. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, for one, was opposed to allowing the display to happen. In fact, Steve Papa, a senior
biologist with the USFWS, seemed to sound the death knoll just three days before the scheduled event. “This event will likely cause adverse affects on the Piping Plover,” Papa told Edward Rubio, a logistics assistant for Grucci. ”Unfortunately . . . there is no possibility of obtaining . . . a permit. I would recommend rescheduling in September to be safe.” Grucci and Semler then moved the location of the fireworks to the roof of Semler’s house – even closer to the plovers – but toned down the scope and length of the event. Grucci pledged to hire a monitor approved by the town to watch over the plover nest though at least one Grucci official seemed to show little concern for the plovers. Philip Butler, a Grucci higher-up, emailed Semler on May 22, “Let’s get this done, damm (sic) the torpedoes.” in response to the red tape that stalled the approval. Bishop thrust himself into the permitting process even as his
campaign filings dated June 26. Bishop said last Wednesday he will donate the money to a charity rather than keep it despite insisting there was no wrongdoing on his
part. Semler – after reportedly getting a phone call from Bishop — later denied that a quid pro quo existed. Continued ON PAGE 35.
Ethics Code Violations? Every incoming member of the U.S. House of Representatives is given a copy of the House Ethics Rules, providing detailed lists of things congressmen can and can’t do. There is even a confidential hotline to call if a congressman is unsure of how to proceed. Congressman Tim Bishop, whose office solicited a large contribution from a constituent and allegedly did a favor for him in return, appears to be on shaky ground at best. Under the heading “Campaign Activities” the manual warns: “Do not accept any contribution that is linked to any official action, past or prospective.” Information obtained by The Independent confirms Bishop contacted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to expedite a fireworks permit for a constituent, Eric Semler. The rules clearly state, members and employees may not contact an agency on a matter in which they have a personal financial interest. Bishop appears to have violated another ethics tenet: “No preferential treatment for the Member’s supporters, contributors, or friends in casework matters – treat all constituents fairly, and on the merits of their claims.” Molly Bishop, who works as a fundraiser for her father, sent Semler an email requesting up to $10,000 in donations. She has earned almost $600,000 from the congressman’s campaign funds. Several ethics rule may come into play: “Members and staff should not do any special favors for family members . . . Members may not hire family members in their congressional office,” and if “Member or employee’s spouse or immediate family member engages in lobbying or similar activity, contact the Ethics Committee for guidance.” Two Washington D.C. watchdog groups have attacked Bishop. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington opined that Bishop committed “an indictable offense” and said, “if you get a campaign contribution to thank you for an official act, that’s called a gratuity, and that’s a federal crime.” The Committee for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington lambasted Bishop for hiring his daughter, labeling him “one of the top abusers in Washington.” Up until recently Molly Bishop’s firm, MCB Consulting, worked from the same building as Congressman Bishop’s Coram office. R.M daughter was hitting up Semler for a donation. On May 24 Butler sent out a group email to some employees: “Wow . . . Congressman Bishop is meeting with the DEC regional director this morning. Be prepared to move forward.” It is not known what transpired at that meeting or if it even took place, but the next day, Papa said, a USFWS superior wrote to Bishop, “you’re good to go” – a direct reversal of the USFWS position from a day earlier. Wendi Weber, the Northeast Regional Director of the USFWS, did not return a phone call Monday. Despite the clutch of plover eggs nearby the fireworks site – one of only 18 in the entire town of Southampton – Eric Semler delivered his Bar Mitzvah present to his son, and 200 people gathered about 50
meters from the plover eggs. On May 29 Butler sent out an email to Grucci employees entitled – apparently sarcastically – “our helpful congressman” quoting Semler, who said “I have to give Tim Bishop’s campaign $10,000 for his help.” Despite complaining about Bishop, Semler sent a note to the Congressman on May 28: it said, “I want to thank you again for going out of your way to help us . . . I can’t really believe we pulled it off. Your relentless focus on this task was so impressive.” Three weeks later he and his wife each contributed $2500 to Bishop’s campaign. Bishop’s camp did respond to requests for a comment about the plovers. It is not known if the eggs survived.

The Tale Of The Miracle Ring By Rick Murphy
Karley Hammond, 16, a visitor to East Hampton, was inconsolable on August 5, when she was playing football with her family near Main Beach. That’s because a beloved ring slipped off her finger into the sea. It wasn’t just a ring – her mother had bought it for her at a Tiffany’s in Rome when the pair visited there. It bore a touching inscription: “I Love You.” “The ring came flying off,” her father, Robert Hammond related. “We all searched, for about 20 minutes. “When you throw a quarter into the ocean it’s gone, you’re never going to get it back.” He told his
crestfallen daughter, “It’s gone.” Jerry Della Femina, the majority owner of The Independent, lives nearby. His grandson was playing in the surf as well. “My grandson’s friend was swimming and he looked down and saw it,” Della Femina recalled. Next up was matching to ring with the rightful owner. Della Femina wrote a small item in The August 8 issue of The Independent accompanying his column, “Jerry’s Ink,” which always runs on page six. The response was amazing, he said. The calls came flying in. “One woman lost her wedding ring on a Hampton Bays beach two years
ago. The reach of The Independent is amazing.” Della Femina knew Hammond was the rightful owner when he called and told him what the inscription said. Karley and the ring were finally reunited last weekend. But there is more to the story. Hammond and his family were eating on Shelter Island and stopped in the Shelter Island Pharmacy afterwards. He saw a stack of Independents in the store, but walked right by them. “I got to the car and said, ‘Let me grab one, maybe I’ll read it later.’” The fact there even was an Independent there was a minor miracle.

Illegal Housing Complaints Continue By Kitty Merrill
It could happen here. The explosion of a Brentwood house earlier in the week prompted comparisons and a warning from board critic Fred Weinberg. Addressing the East Hampton Town Board during the public portion of last Thursday night’s meeting, the Springs resident detailed the events that occurred upisland. An apparent propane explosion destroyed the home killing an infant, injuring 17 people, three critically. Two pedestrians and seven first responders were hurt, two adjacent homes were rendered uninhabitable. The house was cited with multiple code violations related to overcrowding and illegal rentals, Weinberg reported. Stating the tragedy was “preventable,” Weinberg continued, “This setting was a formula for disaster, injury, and death and is exactly like what we’ve been asking you to resolve here in Springs.” If the town board can find ways to “do the impossible” for local business owners like the proprietors of the controversial Montauk Beach House, “surely with the brain power you boast about, you can develop

an inspection protocol for single family homes suspected of code violations,” he declared, predicting, “When a preventable tragedy like this happens here, here in East Hampton, and it will; the blood will be on the hands you’ve been sitting on.” His comments drew a smattering of applause from the small assemblage attending the session. Carole Campolo, an ardent supporter of Super visor Bill Wilkinson and Councilwoman Theresa Quigley, offered a divergent view. Also a Springs resident, she said she, too, is concerned about illegal housing activities in the hamlet. But, she emphasized, “I
also care for Constitutional rights and liberties.” Campolo applauded the town board for “actions taken over the last couple of years to counteract illegal activities, but to also keep in mind everyone’s Constitutional rights to [freedom from] improper search and seizure.” “Extreme language does not help the situation,” she concluded. The issue of illegally overcrowded single-family homes has been a continual problem voiced to local administrations for years, with neighbors in affected areas demanding swift and strong action. Officials just as continually complained of being hamstrung by the law when it comes to

Speeding And Spending By Kitty Merrill
Irresponsible drivers, a public purchase, and training trips topped the docket during last Thursday night’s meeting of the East Hampton Town Board. Board watcher David Buda questioned a resolution that authorized an expenditure of $250 per night for town assessors to attend a conference in Lake Placid. He characterized the expenditure as “excessive” unless absolutely

necessary for the elected assessors to maintain their qualifications for their jobs “which, frankly, I doubt,” he opined. He urged the board to “look extremely askance at this type of expenditure.” Buda reminded that last year, when the board voted to send two police officers to Lake Placid for child safety seat training, he raised objections and wondered whether officials could look into other, less costly ways of meeting training requirements.

Councilman Peter Van Scoyoc explained that while some certification classes are available online, Lake Placid is the centrally located place in the state where all the certification requirements may be fulfilled. Councilwoman Theresa Quigley said she’d asked about using online courses but hadn’t heard back. “It’s a very upsetting to me, the curmudgeon of finance, to let something get by,” Supervisor Bill Wilkinson offered. “We continue to be critical, but if a department head says something is required for certification, I don’t doubt it.” Speaking of doubt, a public hearing on the proposed purchase of property in Lazy Point prompted concern from neighbors during a public hearing at the beginning of the month. Area residents worried about public access and erosion of the beach near the Cranberry Hole

Road parcel. Last week the purchase of a second parcel located across the street was the subject of hearing. Just one speaker reiterated neighbors’ concerns, wanting to know what extent of recreation might take place on the land after it’s acquired. Wilkinson said the uses on the land would be detailed in a management plan adopted after the purchase. The plan would be subject to a public hearing as well. The supervisor also reported that the owners of the first parcel removed it from consideration, having found a private buyer. Also last Thursday night, Kimberly Cantor, who lives on Beach Lane in Wainscott asked the board to address the issue of cars speeding on her street. She said she’d called the supervisor’s office, “and no one responded.” She’s called police numerous times and they set up a machine that points out the speed limit compared to a driver’s speed only twice this summer. Cantor sought the board’s input regarding how a person could petition to have a speed limit lowered, reminding that over a dozen children live in “a beautiful area totally overrun by careless drivers.” Wilkinson said he would discuss the issue with Town Police Chief Ed Ecker. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Classical Orchestra Hits The Hamptons
By Miles X. Logan
The Salomé Chamber Orchestra, a critically acclaimed ensemble of gifted musicians, will make four appearances in the Hamptons beginning Sunday. Salomé Chamber Orchestra is one of the preeminent young orchestras in the U.S. that leverages the universal language and healing power of music to collaborate with other non-profit organizations in order to both raise awareness of their work and broaden the audience of classical music. The Salomé Chamber Orchestra was co-founded three years ago by the Carpenter siblings, Lauren, Sean and David Aaron Carpenter. It is comprised of the top graduates from the Curtis Institute, Juilliard, Princeton University, and Yale University. Salomé’s mission is to present classical music as relevant to today’s younger generations, while at the same time joining with philanthropic organizations to directly help those in need via charity concerts and events. Lauren Carpenter said each evening and each locale will be unique.
Music will include Vivaldi and Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons,” Berlioz’s “Les Nuits d’été” and Wainwrights’ “Going to a Town” On Monday, The Chamber will perform “Opera en Plein Air” at the South Fork Natural History Museum, on the Bridgehampton Turnpike. “It will be music inspired by nature,” Carpenter said. The free, one-hour event is slated to begin at 7 PM. On August 30 the scene shifts to the Nova’s Ark Project at 30 Millstone Road in Water Mill. The Orchestra will perform at Castle Barn on the grounds. The event will benefit the Terra Nova Foundation and will feature music inspired by nature. The next night the Orchestra will perform “Virtuosity” at the Southampton Cultural Center on 25 Pond Lane in Southampton Village. The concert will feature the showpieces of Saint-Saëns, Paganini, Monti, Tchaikovsky and more. On September 1 a free “Music Under The Stars” concert will bring opera arias, Broadway songs, and classical favorites performed by award-winning soprano Amanda

A Fair Vets Fare The Suffolk County Legislature voted to cut the fare for veterans who ride county busses in half during its general meeting earlier this month. The resolution lowers the charge from $1.50 to 75 cents for a period of one year. It also instructs the Department of Public Works to study the effect of the cost cut and the volume of vets who use the bus system. “This will allow the Legislature to get feedback as to whether this reduction will increase ridership and determine how many veterans currently ride the buses,” stated Legislator Tom Muratore, who sponsored the measure. Local Legislator Jay Schneiderman co-sponsored the bill. He said, “This is a small token of our appreciation for those who have so bravely served our nation.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Back On The Big Screen
By Winnie Bonelli
Hold the computer-generated imagery and special effects, The Expendables 2 does it the old fashioned way – with enough muscle power and heavy artillery to knock the Earth off its axis. A retro-style film, Sylvester Stallone’s ensemble of iconic action heroes boasts enough star wattage to light up an entire chain of movie theater screens. Among them is Stallone’s good friend, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The premise is simple, all the Expendables have to do is retrieve a mysterious package from the safe of a downed aircraft, turn it over to Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) and reap an easy payday. Yet something goes terrible wrong, and one of their crew is killed. What follows is a blood bath of epic proportions, laced with selfdeprecating humor and references to earlier movies. The team: Jean-Claude Van Damme as the bad guy, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Stallone, fresh blood The Hunger Games’ Liam Hemsworth, and Schwarzenegger, who apparently is in the midst of a comeback after wrapping up his second term as the 38th governor of California. Stallone and Schwarzenegger had been trying unsuccessfully for 20 years to join forces on screen. Somehow it never panned out. “There was always something off.
Either the script was not right, or the studio was not as much interested in it as we were, or Sly was in the middle of shooting,” said the 65-year-old actor. Then one day in 2010, Arnold was sitting in his hairdresser’s chair when Stallone barged in and said, “Oh man, it would be so great if you could do just a little bit in my Expendables movie.” Schwarzenegger was a little dubious. He didn’t exactly say ‘no,’ but there was a stipulation. “I’m governor,” he replied. “The only way I can do anything for you is if I do it on the weekend and not take away from my work, because the people will get very upset if they know I’m shooting on Thursday and Friday and not doing the people’s work.” It was only one scene – a summit-like situation, but it worked. Audiences laughed. Stallone returned with a prompt request. Schwarzenegger recalled, “So he asked me, ‘Can you be part of the second one? But instead of four hours, can you do four days?’” He would and went off to Bulgaria to shoot the movie. Now that his days of public service are over, Schwarzenegger seems posed to reclaim his Hollywood “A-list” status. Busy fielding scripts, he didn’t rule out the possibility of another Terminator sequel, along with remakes of Predator and The
Running Man. First up, however, is Arnold’s Blueprint, a mini-documentary launching ESPN Films 30 for 30 on Grantland.com debuting September 26. The digital short film series transports viewers back 40 some years to show how the young Austrian farm boy’s year of mandatory military service helped put him on the fast track to international fame. By the age of 10, Schwarzenegger had “a very clear vision of where I wanted to go. I wanted to come to America.” He elaborated during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, “Then later on, at 15, I wanted to be a body building champion and a lifter, and I wanted to be the strongest man in the world. It was so clear in front of me that I was absolutely convinced that it was possible to reach. It was just a matter of putting the work into it, seeing the vision in front of you, and chasing that vision.” It became quickly apparent that Arnold’s mother wasn’t privy to his plan. “My mother was always worried because she saw the pictures on my bedroom wall of nearly naked men oiled up, and so she called the doctor and said, ‘Is there something wrong,’” he related. “‘Is my son turning south here?’” Schwarzenegger entered the Mr. Europe Junior competition, took a
Arnie with his costar, Sylvester Stallone.
train to Germany, and brought back the winning trophy. Shortly afterwards, he added the moniker Mr. Universe to his resume, a title he garnered three times, in addition to a seven-time reign as Mr. Olympia. His first major role was that of Hercules in Hercules in New York. He was credited as Arnold Strong, and his accent was so heavy, the entire dialogue had to be dubbed. Defying the odds, the Golden Globes honored him as New Male Star of the Year in 1976. Undeniably, Conan the Barbarian and the eponymous character of director James Cameron’s science fiction thriller The Terminator permanently sealed his reputation as a superstar. He and Stallone may see more of each other – the Expendables 2 is a hit, Schwarzenegger said he pledged four weeks to Stallone for the next film.

Two Stabbings On The South Fork By Kitty Merrill
Area police are investigating two stabbings reported in the last fortnight. S o u t h a m p t o n To w n Po l i c e responded to a ruckus at the Beach Bar in Hampton Bays Saturday morning just before 2:30. They found two
victims with stab wounds lying outside the establishment. The state police and Riverhead Town Police K-9 units were called in to help search for suspects. Hampton Bays Ambulance treated the victims at the scene and transported them to Southampton Hospital. STPD is asking anyone with information to contact them via their
confidential crime hotline at 631728-3454, or via email at crimetips@ southamptontownny.gov. As of press time, police have not released the identities of the victims, nor reported what type of weapon was used in the assault. The assault follows on the heels of another stabbing on the South

Fork last week. On Monday, August 13, East Hampton Town Police reported the arrest of Carlos Bedoya, of East Hampton. He was charged with second-degree assault, a felony. Bedoya is accused of stabbing a Springs man in the stomach during an altercation outside his home at the Springs Fireplace Apartments. The victim, 36, was transported to Southampton Hospital where he underwent an operation and is reportedly in stable condition. According to Chief Ed Ecker, with the help of the Suffolk County Police K-9 unit, police were able to locate the knife Bedoya allegedly threw into the woods. Asked to explain what prompted the assault, he said, “I think the motive was a real or perceived relationship between the victim and the ex-wife of the defendant.” kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Take 2 Deadline Approaches By Miles X. Logan
T h e H a m p t o n s Ta k e 2 Documentary Film Festival, now in its fifth year, has announced the deadline of August 31 for documentary filmmakers to submit their entries, with the film submission form available on the festival website at www.ht2ff.com. Formerly focused on filmmakers with a connection to Suffolk County, the HT2FF this year is accepting submissions from a wider pool that includes all of Long Island and New York City, from Montauk to Manhattan. Entries can be submitted in one of four categories—short documentary (under 30 minutes), feature documentary (over 40 minutes), college/university student, and high school/youth (up to 15 minutes). Celebrating the art of the documentary, the festival under the direction of Bridgehampton resident and filmmaker Jacqui Lofaro provides talented filmmakers with a second cut or “take 2,” as they say in the movie business. New this year, the three-day fest

EDITORIAL
Bishop Has Some Explaining To Do This isn’t about Tim Bishop versus Randy Altschuler anymore. It’s about Tim Bishop fighting for his political life and his reputation. To hear Bishop tell it, his opponent is somehow behind all the damaging charges leveled against the Congressman. To hear Bishop tell it, Altschuler isn’t allowed to capitalize on damaging stories written about his opponent; they are somehow off limits. Documents and e-mails obtained by this publication indicate Bishop may have violated House Ethics guidelines by doing a favor for a constituent while soliciting a large donation. Washington insiders say there is no question there will be a congressional probe. This followed a release by a non-partisan watchdog group criticizing Bishop for having his daughter on his campaign payroll, and an article in this newspaper in which Bishop acknowledged hiring 10 family members while the provost at Southampton College. In each case Bishop blasted Altschuler, though the challenger had nothing to do with the damaging information. Bishop says otherwise, and he’s dead wrong, and owes Altschuler an apology. Bishop needs to address the charges, not deflect them. Two days after Eric Semler asked Bishop for help getting a permit to have fireworks at his son’s Bar Mitzvah, Molly Bishop, the Congressman’s daughter and head fundraiser, e-mailed Semler and asked for a donation of up to $10,000. Three days later the permit was issued, despite the fact the fireworks were to be set off in close proximity to nesting Piping Plovers. In the interim Bishop may have met personally with a US Fish and Wildlife higher-up – the day after a biologist with that agency said the fireworks would not be allowed to proceed.
Independent VOICES
Shady Practices? Dear Editor, I am sure most, if not all, of you have now read about the very serious ethical and legal questions surrounding Congressman Tim Bishop and his shady fundraising practices. The fact that Newsday, other local newspapers, and the leading non-partisan ethics group in Washington are all calling for an investigation into Congressman Bishop, suggesting he may have even broken the law, speaks volumes. Congressman Bishop’s attempts to
blame others for his own actions – going so far as to claim that the allegations are somehow an attack on his family – reek of desperation. If this whole sordid tale teaches us anything, it’s that the career politicians who have made a mess of Washington simply cannot be the ones trusted to clean it up. We need to change Congress. And we can start by changing our Congressman. Last week, I made the 2nd stop on my 10week tour of Long Island small businesses and stopped at Johnny’s Burgers in Centereach. In addition to getting a great burger, I also had the privilege of meeting and talking with Anthony and Gina DeLuca, who took a risk and started this business in 2010. I am running for Congress for people like
“The allegations were shown to be false, with the donor in question [Semler] forcefully denying all accusations made by Congressman Bishop’s opponents,” Bishop’s camp said in a press release, as if stating as much would make it all go away. First of all, the accusations appear to be true. Second of all, they weren’t made by Altschuler, but by respected journalists. It is true Semler recanted his original story -- after being contacted by Bishop. Semler now claims he didn’t even know Bishop was running for reelection, but that’s not true either -- Molly Bishop wrote to Semler two days after he asked the Congressman for help and stated; “We are going to be in a tough, expensive campaign and so we are very grateful for your willingness to be of help.” Bishop criticized Altschuler for attacking his family. But here we have Molly Bishop once again under the glare of the spotlight, the same person who called Altschuler “anti-woman” for having the audacity to criticize her. Bishop needed to keep his family free of the fray to avoid this kind of thing from happening. Altschuler wouldn’t be attacking them if Tim Bishop didn’t have a history of providing jobs for them. Tim Bishop and his daughter may be subjects in a criminal probe, and Tim Bishop put his daughter in that position, not Randy Altschuler. Most damning is that Bishop, always forthcoming with the press, has retreated into a shell, dodging questions by e-mailing his same week-old statement over and over again. This is a crisis – the campaign is in jeopardy, and the stories aren’t going to go away, they are going to intensify. By the way, some fireworks damaged Semler’s neighbor’s car, causing $7500 worth of damage. There’s no word on how the Piping Plovers made out.
the DeLucas – a middle-class, Long Island family who had the courage to dream big and take a risk. My 10-point plan, which I encourage you all to read at www.Randy2012.com/ jobsplan, outlines real solutions to the problems we face. My plan will foster a climate of job creation, boost small businesses, attract new jobs to Long Island and help to transform our local economy for the future. As the father of two children under the age six, my wife and I are deeply concerned about what awaits them in the future. On the campaign trail, one of the chief concerns I hear from parents and grandparents is the lack of jobs for their children and grandchildren here on Long Island. I couldn’t agree with them more.
With your support, I will work with common-sense people on both sides of the aisle in Congress to clean up the mess we have now and build a brighter future for Long Island and our country. RANDY ALTSCHULER
Dear Editor, In an Indy issue a few weeks back, I read a letter by a Reg Cornelia. I had no idea what it was about but merely reading the first couple of sentences I wondered what could have precipitated such a vitriolic retort which was completely devoid of accuracy. It appears that it was in response to an earlier letter by a John Molnar referring to the Wisconsin Walker recall and bemoanContinued on page 26.

ing the huge amount of money spent to determine the outcome of the election for Governor between the Governor Walker and ex Mayor Barrett. It was a classic example of how money influences an election outcome. He lamented the fact that it was a harbinger of future elections being bought by the highest bidder (donator) thanks to the disgraceful 5/4 Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court. Regardless of political partisanship, Mr. Cornelia’s facts should not be invented to suit a position but instead be honest if they are to make any point whatsoever. Just several of the inaccuracies and corrections: The Koch brothers are not ‘”worth 250 million dollars” but rather $25 billion each for a total of $50 billion making Charles and David fourth and fifth in Forbes 400. Soros is not “worth hundreds of billions of dollars” but is worth $22 billion, making him seventh in Forbes. Wall Street has not donated more to President Obama than Romney. Romney has received far and away much greater donations from Wall Street, no doubt due to President Obama wanting to regulate them while Romney would have them regulate themselves. We’ve seen how well that worked. The $7 million “repair” bill for the State capital originally claimed by Walker’s rooters was finally proven an intentional political distortion. It was in fact estimated and completed for $272,000 and credited to “wear and tear” in a short period of time and not to malicious damage. Unions and corporations are not financially equal. The ever-shrinking Unions do not even begin to compete monetarily with the vast wealth of the everexpanding Corporations even though they have both been dubbed “People” by our theoretically “unbiased” Supreme Court. The Mayor Barrett Party received $3.9 million in donations compared to Walker’s $30.5 million. Who said elections are not

Will the recent shark sighting off the shore of the beach stop you from swimming? Carolyn Simon I’ve been swimming here for 30 years. I’m not stopping now. I’ve actually seen sharks out there before but they don’t come that close to shore. It just makes it more exciting.
Yasmin Mahmoudieh I’m here at the beach, it’s a beautiful day and I am planning on swimming anyway. But I must say that it’s probably a very good thing that I never saw the movie, Jaws.
Dorrit Tepper I will be swimming no matter what. I don’t think the shark will be coming so close to the beach that it’s anything to worry about or should stop anyone from swimming.
Ramy Sharp I probably will be staying just a bit closer to the shore. And as for the kids — they are going to be staying right near me. But I’m not really too worried about it.
bought? Eight to one makes for a pretty good purchasing sale. And the letter went on. It’s fruitless to expound on further inaccuracies in it but it would behoove the writer to try and deal with specifics, with facts rather than invent them to rationalize his contempt for our President and his Party. Finally it seems Mr. Cornelia was especially put off by a statement made that the East and West coast, specifically California and New York, were more enlightened than the states in the belly of our country. I had earlier archived the Molnar letter and to see what had so grieved Mr. Cornelia. Not to worry. I found that in it he did not specifically suggest that enlightenment applied to all the people of New York. NICK DELGADO

Greater Values Dear Rick, There was a telling observation made in a recent Blaze. For those who are not familiar with the Blaze, it is a Conservative website, brainchild of Glenn Beck of Mercury Radio Arts (MRA) and live streaming video network GBTV, who presents it, “as an alternate to the mainstream media outlets who are distorting facts to fit rigid agendas.” Only Beck could say that about a Beck endeavor with a straight face. He calls it a news media, no doubt deriving the distorted definition of news from FOX NEWS, where he did a stint. It was a pictorial comparison of Democratic Vice President Biden and Romney Vice presidential select Ryan. The title was, “Re: Biden or Ryan – Who’s more manly?” On the left ((ironic) was a picture of Ryan, rifle in hand, proudly kneeling behind a huge turkey he had just killed with a victorious conquerors proud grin - on Ryan’s face, not the turkey’s. In the picture along side was Biden feigning to run quickly, playing a chasing game nurturing a bunch of laughing tots on a grassy park lawn. The title of this display was, “Re: Biden or Ryan - Who’s more manly?” Continued on page 27.

So telling of the priorities between the liberal leaning Democratic Party and the today’s morphed version of the once proud Grand Old Party, into the Right Wing Neo Conservative party. “Values” is a term sometimes too loosely tossed about, abused and misused. It would be interesting if the tag line on those two photos was “Who has greater values?” At one time that was an important virtue to both Parties. NICHOLAS ZIZELIS
Must See Movies Dear Editor, I would like to share with your readers my observation of released movies with substance that somehow were never shown at our area movie theaters, and continue to be nonexistent. My evidence is the following compilation of movies that have been conspicuously absent on all the Hamptons’ movie screens: Fireproof, release date of September 26, 2008. This film starred Kirk Cameron and told an inspiring love story of the lead actor’s commitment to love God, which enables him to understand what it means to truly love his wife. Atlas Shrugged, release date of April 15, 2011. The theme of this film is the role of individual achievement in society and demonstrates what can happen when that individual achievement is undervalued, suppressed and demonized by government’s bureaucracy, as in “You didn’t build that.” Complex characters embody heroism and evil, resulting in an inspirational movie. Courageous, release date of September 30, 2011. Honor begins at home is the focus of this movie, about everyday heroes who long to be the kinds of dads that make a
Independent/James J. Mackin
lifelong impact on their children, and raise them in a God-honoring way. For Greater Glory, release date of June 1, 2012. This film’s true story is about an impassioned group of men and women who each decide to risk it all for family, faith, and the very future of their country. It concerns the Cristero War in Mexico in the 1920s’ chronicling the cost of religious persecution from a powerful and ruthless government. Courage and belief are forged when justice seems lost. With today’s furor regarding the attempt by HHS to usurp our First Amendment Right to Freedom of Religion, this movie is a timely portrayal of that war’s battle as it parallels today’s ongoing conflict. 2016, Obama’s America, release date of August 17, 2012 to only three movie theaters on Long Island. This film examines the question: If Obama wins a second term, where will we be in 2016? During the film’s journey we find out how hope and change has become radically misunderstood. Obama is a man with a past. This movie depicts what powerful ways that past defines him, who he is, how he thinks, and where he intends to take America and the world. The closest theater to the Hamptons that this movie is showing is Stony Brook, playing now until this Thursday, to sold-out audiences. I defy some of your readers to even know about the existence of these films. What does this say about the people responsible for choosing what films will be shown in this area’s theaters, who have thus chosen to deprive us of the ability to view films showcasing integrity? Americans from Riverhead to Montauk are denied the opportunity to view real men and women depicting inspirational stores about hope, honor, and the courage to change . . . at such a time as this! Dems Senate Debate Set For Next Week By Emily Toy
The race is on. Southampton Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming and fellow Democrat, Rocky Point’s Jennifer Maertz, will face off in a debate scheduled for August 29, in the quest for their party’s nomination to challenge incumbent Senator Ken LaValle this November. Hosted by the League of Woman Voters of the Hamptons, the debate will be held at the Rogers Memorial Library and will include timed opening and closing statements from both candidates as well as a Q&A involving both the League and the audience.
Maertz, a life-long resident of the First Senate District in Suffolk County, which she is hoping to represent, is a practicing litigation attorney and alumnus of St. John’s University and Touro Law School. She received an MBA with distinction from the New York Institute of Technology. Maertz first ran for the New York State Senate on the East End in 2010, ultimately losing the election to LaValle by a two to one ratio. She announced her new campaign back in February and has the distinction of being the only candidate to go up against LaValle twice. LaValle has held the position in
the state senate since 1976. Fleming, a resident of Noyac who owns a private law practice in Sag Harbor, unveiled her campaign via video announcement in late May. The councilwoman is a graduate of Hunter College and the University of Virginia School of Law. She worked for 10 years as an assistant district attorney to Robert Morgenthau in Manhattan. As assistant DA, she was the chief of the office’s welfare fraud unit. Fleming’s legal work has also focused on matrimonial and family law as well as professional mediation. Fleming became a town board member in Southampton in 2010,

when she won a special election for the position. She was re-elected to the town board in a general election last November. The debate, which will be open to the public, begins at 7 PM on August 29. It will be broadcast on Southampton Town’s government access channel by SEA-TV and will also be streaming at www. southamptontownny.gov. The primary vote is September 13. The winner of the primary will run against Republican LaValle in the general election on November 6. For more information, contact the League at 631-324-4637. Emily@indyeastend.com
Radio Check Service At MMB Sea Tow Services International, Inc. announces that Montauk M a r i n e B as i n i s n o w a S e a Tow Automated Radio Check host station. Boaters in Long Island’s Montauk Harbor and the surrounding areas of Block Island Sound can take advantage of this vital boating safety service free of charge by calling Channel 26 on their VHF radio. Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service, which is provided in association with MariTEL, lets boaters quickly and easily check that their vessel’s VHF radio is in good working order. All they have to do is tune the VHF to the local Automated Radio Check channel, key the mic and request a radio check. They’ll hear an automated response playing their call back to them, confirming the radio is operational and allowing them to assess transmission strength. “We are happy to be able to provide the free Automated Radio Check service to local boaters and all other mariners passing through the area,” said Carl Darenberg, President of Montauk Marine Basin. “A working VHF radio is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on any boat.” The first and only ser vice of its kind in the U.S., Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check repurposes existing technology in an innovative way by utilizing marine operator channels that are no longer needed for voice transmissions.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8. Semler reportedly stated that he was unaware that Bishop was even running for reelection. He told Newsday that the request for a donation came only after the permit for the fireworks was obtained. However a string of emails and other documents obtained by this newspaper clearly contradict his statement. Semler called the solicitation from Bishop’s camp “really gross” in an email to Fireworks By Grucci just days after he called Bishop asking for help. In one email Semler complained that Bishop, “didn’t hesitate to solicit me in the heat of the battle.” Bishop maintained Semler was “exaggerating” the situation in the hope of getting a refund from Grucci. Bishop, a five-term incumbent, is locked in a tight race with Randy Altschuler, who he bested two years ago in an extremely tight contest. Altschuler, a Republican and Conservative, has also garnered Independence Party support this time around. Bishop claimed Altschuler was responsible for the leaked emails but Diana Weir, the challenger’s campaign manager, said Altschuler knew nothing about it until the Politico article came out. She said it was her understanding the Grucci camp didn’t leak the documents either. One source said a Justice Department probe is possible, but probably wouldn’t be completed until after the election. “Just as I would do and have done for any of my constituents, earlier this summer I was happy to help a constituent navigate
A Congressman Intervenes . . . for a campaign contribution? (From top) A Fireworks By Grucci official seems to acknowledge the myriad of obstacles the company faces in obtaining the necessary approvals for a fireworks display at the Semler residence in Sagaponack; An official from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said via e-mail on May 23 “there was no possibility” the fireworks display would be allowed to proceed. A Fireworks by Grucci executive told his employees that Tim Bishop was meeting a US Fish and Wildlife Services regional director on the morning of May 24, reviving hopes the fireworks would go on. Eric Semler thanks the Congressman. “I really can’t believe we pulled it off,” he wrote. Semler complains Bishop’s camp hit him up for a donation, calling it “really gross.” Semler tells a Grucci official he paid Bishop $10,000.

the bureaucracy and ensure that his son’s Bar Mitzvah could be the celebration the family wanted it to be,” Bishop said in a press release. Altschuler called on Bishop to ask the Office of Congressional Ethics Board to investigate the donation. Bishop did not respond by press time. Just two weeks ago it was revealed in this newspaper that Bishop had 10 family members on the Southampton College payroll while he was provost; Long Island University eventually closed the campus because it was losing tens of millions of dollars. A non-partisan watchdog group criticized Bishop for employing his daughter – she has made close to $600,000 since he took office in Washington and $430,000 during the last two election cycles. Bishop is also under attack from the Altschuler camp because the congressman acknowledged that his wife, Kathryn, ran a childcare center on the Southampton College campus rent-free for almost three decades. Bishop likened the operation to “a child development department,” part of the fabric of the college. He acknowledged under questioning, though, that his wife’s summer camp, dubbed Kindercamp, was a money making venture and not under the auspices of the university. It appears Semler, who has a house in Sagaponack next to Ira Rennert’s estate on 3 Fairfield Pond Lane, changed his story after getting a phone call from Bishop. Though he now claims he didn’t know Bishop was running for office until after his son’s Bar Mitzvah, Molly Bishop’s email on May 23 clearly contradicts him. Messages left at TCS management, a hedge fund Semler runs, were not returned. Grucci Jr. did not return calls either. The Bishop camp declined to comment beyond its press release dated last Wednesday afternoon. Several Grucci employees and executives were asked to comment via email and did not respond by press time. Wendi Weber, the Northeast regional director of the USFWS, did not respond but a spokeswoman for her said she did not personally meet with Bishop.

An informational meeting will be held on Sunday from 2 PM to 4 PM at the Marine Museum on Bluff Road in Amagansett. Lemonade and cookies will be served. Everyone is welcome. In June Krupinski attended the 70th anniversary of the night a young Coast Guardsman on patrol found several Nazi spies sneaking ashore. Volunteers staged a reenactment of the event.

Fallon Retiring Lorelle Fallon, Manager and former owner of Cook Travel Inc. with offices in East Hampton, Southampton and Greenport, announced her retirement on August 12. Business Report Capital One Bank today released the results of its quarterly Market Pulse Survey gauging the economic outlook of Greater New York area businesses and consumers. The results show that, despite reporting more stability and a measured improvement in financial performance, New York businesses remain reticent to increase spending and hiring in the near-term. Only one-third (34 percent) of large businesses report plans to hire additional employees in the next six months, 10 points lower than the first quarter of 2012. In addition, half (49 percent) of the New York consumers surveyed believe that jobs are “hard to find,” and 14 percent of local consumers say that jobs are “nearly impossible to find.”

Between 1930 and 1943, at Ebbets Field, there was an NFL team called the Brooklyn Dodgers. But they were struggling and in 1932, Benny Friedman, once the NFL’s leading passer, was tapped to help improve the team’s unimpressive record. He was both head coach and QB. However, the season was a disappointment and Friedman was relieved of his coaching duties. Happily, Benny did eventually make it into the Hall of Fame, and the Dodgers made history, too... in broadcasting. In 1939 they played in the NFL’s first televised game, beating the Philadelphia Eagles , 23 to 14.

Foreclosure Prevention Assistance Available To Homeowners By Mile X. Logan
New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele and Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning announced their partnership with the New York State Department of Financial Services to offer help to homeowners struggling to save their homes from foreclosure this week. “Too many homeowners are facing foreclosure and don’t know where to turn,” said Thiele. “I am hopeful that residents will take advantage of this opportunity to obtain free, reliable assistance.” “Our national economy continues to struggle and homeowners are the most effected,” stated Browning. “We must do everything in our power to assist all homeowners that have fallen on tough times, and Governor Cuomo’s Foreclosure Prevention Program is doing just that. Not only does this program come right to affected resident’s

neighborhoods, but it assures them that they will not be victimized by predatory schemes. I want to thank Assemblyman Thiele for advocating to bring this much needed service to Mastic.” Foreclosure prevention specialists will be available to meet homeowners from 11 AM to 7 PM on Friday in a Department of Financial Services’ (DFS) Mobile Command
Center at the William Paca Middle School, located at 338 Blanco Drive in Mastic Beach. Homeowners will have confidential meetings with DFS foreclosure specialists who assess where homeowners are in the preforeclose or foreclosure process. Those wishing to attend do not need to make an appointment. Attendees should bring paperwork,
including letters, copies of correspondence, correspondence logs, bank and/or mortgage statements, etc., which may help document where in the foreclosure process homeowners are or any issues they may have encountered. “Whether you’re from Mastic or Montauk or anywhere in between, I urge you to come out,” noted Assemblyman Thiele.

James Brierley, 76
James Donald Brierley, commonly referred to as Jim, passed away last Thursday. Jim died in his home after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family, including children, their spouses and grandchildren. Jim was 76 years old. Jim and his wife, Anne Marie, decided to move their family to East Hampton in 1972 after years spending summer vacations there. They never looked back. Jimʼ’s lifelong passion was his bride, whom he married in 1956. His secondar y passion was fishing which later was largely replaced by skiing. Winters were spent in Vermont and Colorado. Unfortunately, in 1997 Jim suffered a debilitating stroke which would end his skiing career. He and Anne Marie continued to enjoy spending time in Vermont although he would never ski again. They still managed to do extensive traveling, including a cross country road trip with his son, daughter in law, sister in law and family as well as visits to Maine. They made numerous trips to St. John in the Virgin Islands to visit daughters and grandchildren as well as trips to Belize to visit their daughter and son in law. With the help of his family he was also able to continue with activities he enjoyed such as biking and kayaking. A wake was held at Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton on Sunday afternoon followed by a funeral Mass at Most Holy Trinity

Church on Monday morning. His remains were cremated and will be buried at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery at a later date. In addition to his wife Anne Marie, Jim left behind five children and their families: Eileen Brierley and her husband Tom Small, Eileen’ʼs three children, Sean Bos, Ashley Bos, Kelly Kalman, Susan Brierley and her husband Paul Fredsell; James Brierley, his wife Kim, and two children Kyle and Curran; Donald Brierley, his wife Susan and their three children Jack, Luke and Jane; Jackie Brierley, her two children Jordan and Lili Clendinen and her fiance Wes Ivankovitch. Jim graduated from Manhattan College in 1957 and set up his own practice as a Civil Engineer. In later years he worked for Suffolk County until his career was cut short by his stroke. The family gave special thanks to East End Hospice who made it possible for Jim to say goodbye to them in his own home.
Torah Rededication Temple Adas Israel will rededicate its 150-year-old “orphan” Holocaust Torah at a Shabbat ceremony on Friday at the Temple. This historic celebration will be preceded by a march into the Temple with the Torah. The procession begins at 7:30 PM. The entire community is welcome to share in this sacred and joyful event. Forty-eight years ago, 19 years after the last German troops had surrendered in Prague, 1564 Torah scrolls arrived in London representing hundreds of Jewish communities in Bohemia and Moravia that had been wiped out in the Holocaust. For many years, the scrolls lay unused and unattended in a Prague synagogue that had been used as a warehouse. They were then shipped across Europe, arriving at the Westminster Synagogue in London on February 7, 1964. In the years since then, the Torahs have been sent to Jewish communities in Great Britain and twenty other countries of the Western World, including West Germany, to be cherished as memorials to a tragic past but at the same time to be read and studied by a new generation of Jews, the guarantors of Jewish survival and rebirth. In 1995, 10 members of Temple Adas Israel donated $1500 and brought one of these Torahs from England. The Torah needed to be restored. The faded letters and torn parchment needed to be restored by an experienced scribe – or sofer – to bring it back to a “kosher” condition so it could once again be

Here’s How You Do It Fantasy Football is a game of skill. Yes, luck plays a part – but not as much as we think. A lot of fantasy owners complain because their players get hurt. Yes, it’s a part of the game but there are also some players who constantly get hurt, and some who never miss a game. If you take an injury-prone player, you’re setting yourself up for a fall. We’ve analyzed the key players in this space. I’ve been doing this for 25 years, and I’ve won hundreds of leagues and thousands of dollars. People always ask what my secrets are: It’s the little things, like the tip above. Here are more: 1. Don’t be rigid on draft day. Look for value, regardless of position. 2. No matter what any expert says, never take your kicker and defense until the final two rounds of your drafts. Statistics prove it is impossible to forecast which kickers will be most effective from year to year, and defenses are unpredictable. 3. Forget about bye weeks! In one of my leagues there is an owner who calls me up after the draft every year: “Dude, you have three guys with bye weeks in week 11. Wanna trade me?” The truth is, none of us
REAL ESTATE
know if we are even going to be around 11 weeks from now, but you can be sure the face of our teams will change considerably by then. Worry about your bye weeks as they approach – you can always pick up a player on the waiver wire. 4. Don’t fall in love with a player. If you’re getting the same players in every draft you are taking them too early. 5. Handcuff! Make sure you get the back-up to your star players, just in case. 6. Pay attention! Listen to Sirius Fantasy radio. Join the Fantasy Guru website. Tune-in to the TV on Sunday mornings. 7. Keep abreast of injuries. I get tweets from Stephania Bell, who watches players right up until game time – more than a few have pulled their hammies warming up. The most important thing is to know your match-ups. Play your superstars every week, but alternate your other players based on the weekly projections. For example, if you have two wide receivers with equal skills and one is playing against a team with a terrible pass defense, he’s your guy. The Guru’s
projections are usually spot on. ESPN II’s Sunday morning fantasy show is also pretty good, as is the CBS morning show.
ESPN: Not! We mentioned previously that most pay to play fantasy football providers take a lot of the money off the top. CBS takes up to 40 percent, for example. (As we pointed out in our last column, Yahoo now offers $100 leagues and returns 90 percent of the money to the top three finishers.) When it comes to rip-offs nothing tops ESPN though. ESPN charges $24.95 to enter a team -- $39.95 if you want its “Insider” package, which purports to give you inside information. There are 10 teams, meaning ESPN collects at least $249.50 for every league. There
are, literally, thousands of them. From that vast amount of money it collects ESPN gives out three grand prizes — Best Buy gift certificates worth a total of $5000. That’s it. L e a g u e w i n n e r s g e t “ 10 0 Winner’s Circles Points.” Even if it were cash, $100 would represent only 40 percent of the money taken in. But look closer – 100 winner circle points have a real value of just $15 – they are redeemable for ESPN blankets, coffee mugs, bags, and the other crap they give you if you subscribe to their stupid magazine. In other words, junk. There is no feasible excuse for throwing money away by joining an ESPN league. Get nine buddies, each of you throw in $25, and set-up a private league on Yahoo. Then divvy up the money amongst yourselves.

Spring Lines – Happiness at the Dock One of the two great mysteries of boating is docking while under the baleful gaze of (pick all that apply: your slip mates, restaurant patrons looking down at you, the dock master). The other is “What Side Of This Buoy Do I Go On?”. (See The Independent archives at www. indyeastend.com, 1/26/11.) This is about mastering the first. Spring lines are a little understood and little appreciated aid in proper docking. It is also little understood that there are two forms of spring lines that have opposite functions. One form is the line or lines tied from your boat to the dock that keeps it from moving fore or aft while docked. The second form is the line (only one) that is tied from your boat to the dock that allows you to spring into or out of a slip. We’ll discuss both.
The Springing Spring Line If you’ve ever been confronted with a wind that is blowing you against a dock that you are trying to get away from, you know how difficult (and expensive) that can be. As you power ahead, your stern
is being pushed against the dock by the wind. Bump, bump, scratch, scratch, scrape, scrape. Painful, lubberly and potentially expensive. But try this. While at the dock, release all your lines except the bow line. Uncleat it, but leave one round turn under the horn so that you have both some purchase plus a way to pull the line free towards you while aboard the boat when you are ready. While keeping that purchase, power ahead slightly. When the boat gets to the end of the still-secure bow line, your stern will spring outwards as the bow is pulled closer to the dock by the momentum of the boat itself. Now, put your engine in reverse, pull the bow spring line back to you as you now easily back away from the dock. This process can be reversed if you can’t power ahead (say there is another boat tied up just ahead of you) by using a spring line off your stern, backing down on it, having your bow spring out and away you go! What if you have to dock in a tight place and the wind is pushing you off the dock? The concept is the same. First, cleat a line to the stern

cleat closest the dock and throw the bitter end to the dockhand. Ask him to cleat it to his dock cleat. Now turn your wheel towards the dock and power ahead slowly. Lo and behold, your boat will move sideways to the dock. This can also be reversed if there is no room ahead. Just tie it to your bow cleat, throw the line to the dockhand for his securing it at his end, and turn the wheel once again towards the dock and then power astern. In both cases, if the wind is too strong at dead-slow on the throttle, you can apply more thrust – as long as those cleat knots are well made. You don’t want to spring free.
The Docking Spring Line When using a spring line at the dock to secure your boat so that it doesn’t move forward or aft while tied to that dock, the only thing to remember is that the lines are named for the direction that they go in when they leave your boat. An aft spring line goes aft and a forward spring line goes forward. So, if the skipper says “Hand over the ‘bow aft’ spring line to the deckhand,” he means go to the bow, put a line on the cleat and hand it to the deckhand who will walk aft and probably cleat it to the dock just past the mid-point of the boat. The skipper will likely then

say, “OK, hand him over the ‘stern forward’ spring line.” You will then tie a line to your stern cleat, hand it to the dockhand who will walk it forward and cleat it to the dock, also just past the mid-point of the boat. You now have an “X” formed by the two spring lines criss-crossing each other. The aft spring line keeps the boat from moving forward and the forward spring line keeps the boat from moving aft. In that they are crossed like that, you don’t need to leave any slack in them for the tide changes because they will act like scissors as the boat goes up and down with the tide. BTW, the dockhand could have tied them both to the same midcleat on the dock as that does not put double pressure on one cleat. When the wind is on the bow, the stern forward spring line is the only one tensioning the cleat. When the wind is astern, it is the bow aft spring line that is keeping the boat from moving ahead. Spring ahead – to better seamanship. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing.”

Greed Defines NFL Dispute As the NFL season approaches, the ongoing dispute between the owners and the NFL Referees Association (NFLRA) looms larger. With no immediate end in sight to the lockout, it’s becoming more likely that the NFL will start the season with replacement officials. The heart of the dispute revolves around the league’s desire to add three additional officiating crews and to make a handful of referees full-time employees. Currently, NFL referees are part-time, which allows the majority to have a full career outside their duties to the league. The average NFL referee works 15 games per year and pulls in $149,000; not too shabby for parttime work. While both sides are pointing fingers, it’s clear they’re both guilty of the exact thing they’re blaming each other of . . . greed. The NFL is willing to pay the full-timers about $175,000. The refs are unwilling to give up their fulltime jobs unless they are paid like MLB umpires (up to $350,000) and

NBA referees (up to $225,000). It’s difficult to sympathize with the NFL referees on this count, since their counterparts are on the road all season, and work up to 10 times as many games. Adding three additional crews would allow the league to add young blood to an aging pool and increase its officiating options. It would also give the league flexibility if it decided to replace a referee or two due to substandard decisionmaking. The NFLRA also disputes the validity of the league’s current salary proposal. The league says it’s offering up to an 11 percent increase based on service. The officials insist the raise is closer to three percent. The league also wants to change the officials’ retirement plan by converting it from a pension plan to a 401K plan. The league is offering to provide annual contributions of $20,000 to each referee’s 401K. Once again, what was the last part

time job you applied for with that benefit? Of course, there’s nothing wrong with asking for a raise. And since the NFL is a $10 billion corporation, is the league being petty and jeopardizing the integrity of the game and the health of its players just to save a modest sum? Or, are the refs overestimating the uniqueness of their skills and underestimating the sweet deal they have? Or a little of both? Many players are multimillionaires because they have unique talents that 99.9 percent of the population don’t possess. They are the primary reason the league has grown in popularity. No amount of training will ever make me into an NFL quality player. No matter how hard I train, I won’t be able to

bench press 225 pounds, 25 times, while also running a 4.5 second, 40yard dash. The job of an NFL referee isn’t easy and it too requires a unique set of skills. But I would argue that many more of us could be trained to perform that job. And implementation of the replay has arguably made the referee’s job easier. In the end, if the lockout lasts into the regular season, there are no winners. The NFL and NFLRA lose credibility, players will be at a greater risk for injury, and the fans get a lesser product. Let’s hope it’s settled soon. Pete is a lifelong Montauk resident and former sports talk host at 88.7FM WEER. He can be reached via email at Peterfmundo@gmail.com.

Play Bridge A hand very similar to this one was played recently at Thursday night’s duplicate game at the East Hampton Day Care Center. Most declarers lost the first two diamond tricks and then trumped the third round in hand. South could now lose only one more trick and still make the game contract. Most declarers then drew trump and tried the spade finesse, which had a 50-50 chance of making. Unfortunately, the finesse lost and declarer still had to lose a spade. Norm Abell, one of our more adept players, saw another line of play that had a better chance of success. He realized that clubs offered a better chance. What he needed was West to hold one club honor. Norm then, after drawing three rounds of trumps, led the jack of clubs and let it ride to the queen.
August 22, 2012
East could not profitably lead a spade and thus led another diamond which Norm trumped. Then he led the nine of clubs which West did not cover and, finally the two. The dummy hand held the last high club which allowed South to dispose of a losing spade. Norm lost only two diamonds and one club. Nice line of play, Norm. Any comments or questions can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com. If you know four or five dedicated people who would like to learn to play the world’s most challenging and exciting card game, please call me at 631-907-2917 or e-mail me at the above address. You can play bridge after six lessons of an hour and a half. We are starting to schedule private lessons for early September.

Fishing Report Hey, Snapper!
Peconic Bay & Points East Porgies are best out around Rogers Rock and Robin’s Island. Further east near the ruins the fluking has been decent. Surf/Shore bound/Canal The Shinnecock Canal is loaded with snappers. You can target them when the locks are both open and closed. Porgies are at the north end although you have to weed through the smaller fish. Both the Ponquogue Bridge and the Shinnecock Inlet have produced fluke with a fair amount of keepers mixing in. The area’s beaches are still quiet. Be sure to get your surf gear ready

Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean The bay continues to be the best bet for fluke as it has been most of the summer. Incoming high water and beginning of the outgoing remains the best time. East Channel and Basket areas have held the most fish. The ratio of keepers to shorts drops daily as the area gets hammered due to the non-ocean bite. High low rigs and bucktail jigs have done very well tipped with spearing squid combos. The inlet has some bass falling for drifted live baits but most of the fish are just keeper size. Best ocean fluke bite has been out at Gurney’s if you want to make a run.

Ryan and crew were awarded the grand prize -- an all expense paid trip to Antigua Sailing Week at an awards ceremony at Breakwater Yacht Club after the race. Captain Jim and crew also met the Honorable John Maginley, the Antigua Minister of Tourism. George Martin (right) brought Osprey home in third place. Two racers come about.
