THE LOST BOOKIE (A MODERN DAY LOVE STORY) Greenberg – my bookie – was missing. After I gave him the best 22 years of my life, he disappeared and left me. I had been abandoned. For 22 years, during the football season I would speak to Greenberg every Sunday and Monday. The conversation would go something like this: “Greenberg, I would say, “This is Jerry D (my ridiculously obvious code name). What do you have on the Dallas game? “The boys [Cowboys] are three [point] dogs [underdogs], he would say. In the background I would hear his phones incessantly ringing with other hopefuls rushing to make the 1 PM game time deadline.

“I’ll take them for a dollar [$100], I would reply. “Okay, Jerry, you have the boys plus three for a dollar, he would confirm. On holidays he might have a few more words for me. “The best to you and your family, he would say. “And to yours, I would reply. Here’s the catch. I didn’t know if he had a family. I didn’t know a single personal thing about him. In 22 years I never laid eyes on him even once. I only knew a voice on the telephone. Yet I trusted him as much as I ever trusted anyone in the world of business. Like just about everyone else in business, I have, on rare occasion, been fooled by experts. We all run

into a few upstanding people who are pillars of society who will shake your hand, look you straight in the eye, and screw you. But not Greenberg. Not the disembodied voice on the phone. If I won, an envelope of cash would arrive. If I lost, a messenger would pick up an envelope of cash from me. On those few occasions when I miscalculated and sent him too much money, he would return it immediately. We were so evenly matched; whole years went by without a penny changing hands. One Sunday morning, as I did for 22 years, I woke up and went right to the sports pages of the New York Post to check out the betting line for the day’s games. Then I put on my tennis gear and jumped into my car and headed for the beloved East Hampton Indoor Tennis Club. As I played I kept one eye on the ball and the other on my watch. Between games I would make my call to Greenberg. The Sunday call to Greenberg was a must for me – I never missed one. I called him from weddings and funerals. I called him from hospitals. I called him from street corners. I called him from boats and planes and I called him from England, France, Italy and Japan. Let me tell you, this wasn’t your run-of-the-mill relationship. This was deep and meaningful. But on that Sunday when I called Greenberg, an awful AT&T recorded voice message came on and informed me that the number had been disconnected and no further information was available. Naturally, I doubted my speed dial. I called again and again ...

same answer. I started to panic. Greenberg had vanished from my life without so much as a goodbye. I owed him $165, but I didn’t feel like a winner. I came back to the tennis game and told my wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, what had happened. “I can’t get Greenberg. Something is wrong, he’s gone. I continued to play but my mind wasn’t on tennis. In my heart I knew that Greenberg was gone and Sundays would never be the same. At one point Judy called out to me, “I’ve never seen you so depressed. Was there something going on between you two? “Don’t be ridiculous, I answered, not at all amused. “I’ve never even seen Greenberg, he was just a voice on the phone. “Sounds like a long-term phonesex relationship to me, she muttered with a silly smile on her face. I found out from a source the next day that Greenberg suddenly was forced to quit the business. I didn’t ask for any explanation. I come from a part of Brooklyn where bookies rode in the front seat of their Cadillacs one day and were found in the trunk of their Cadillacs the next. I’m sure Greenberg had a good reason for taking early retirement. These days I do all my football betting on the Internet. It’s cold and impersonal. At least football season will be starting soon. It’s the only thing that makes autumn palatable. You can keep your changing leaves, Halloween, and frost on those goddamn pumpkins. Give me the New York Giants, a cold martini, and my beloved little dog Shlomo sitting on my lap for good luck. It’s great, but it’s not the same. I still miss Greenberg. Eden Abused In East Hampton

By Kitty Merrill

Dell Cullum has been going to the Nature Trail in East Hampton since he was a child. A professional wildlife photographer, he’s taken pictures of animals all over the country, but returns to capture the bucolic scenes in his homeland and especially at the trail, which he calls “The Eden of East Hampton.” Lately his focus has unfortunately been on the two-footed visitors, and the mess they make. So incensed by tourists’ litter and obnoxious behavior, Cullum created a short film entitled “The Sad Truth: Summer In The Hamptons.“ In just two days it was shared over 500 times on Facebook and received

thousands of comments. Running like a tourism promo, “The Sad Truth” features still photographs of the predation Cullum’s comes across – cases of beer at the bench in the trail, kids tormenting ducks, feathers visible at the end of the sticks they use to hit them as their mothers stand by, and much more – with sarcastic captions. “Wildlife here finds many uses for the trash,” one caption reads leading into a picture of a huge rat at the trail. “Encouraging” tourists to “visit our beautiful beaches” Cullum dryly notes that if they want to party all night on the beach, they can stay up to “Watch the beautiful Hampton

sunrise,” the caption marking a photo of, indeed, a beautiful sunrise against a backdrop of beer cans and garbage on a picnic table at Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett. A native of Amagansett who practically lived on Indian Wells Beach as a kid, Cullum has taken innumerable sunrise pictures all over the East End. He generally shows up an hour before sunrise to set up and this summer on more than one occasion found rowdy revelers still in full party mode, trashed and trashing. “I’ve been there with blazing parties and trance music thumping as I drove down the street.” In one case, he said, he called the

police who responded and dispersed the partiers. They left all their garbage and torches in the sand and a fire pit with a note that said “F@#$ Your Hamptons.” Just last weekend when he arrived at Indian Wells before sunrise, Cullum discovered an abandoned fire with flames over a foot tall. Three huge logs were “blazing away” about 250 yards east of the parking lot and, of greater concern, about 20 feet away form the dune and dune grass. “A gentle wind could have set that on fire,” Cullum observed. Nearby was a pile of ice from a cooler mixed with broken glass. Police and public works staff, in the village and town have been responsive to Cullum’s calls, he emphasized. “My beef isn’t with the town, that they don’t keep it clean,” he asserted. “It’s the people who don’t live here . . . It’s obvious because from October to April, there’s never a time when there’s garbage or trash all over . . . It’s not right they can do this to us, in our public areas, our beaches. They’re the best places we have.” “I feel people are waking up from seeing the video,” he said. “I’m trying to make people care. This is too important to let go by.” Cullum doesn’t have a solution to the problem. “I pray somebody who’s smarter and has the love of this town like I do can come up with an answer,” he said. In the meantime, he urged, “Let’s keep talking. Let’s keep screaming.” Visit The Independent’s website www.indyeastend.com to see “The Sad Truth” or check out Cullum’s website imaginationnature.com. It’s got beautiful pictures on there, too. kmerrill@indyeastend.com.

Unpatrolled During Prime Time?

Independent / Kitty Merrill

Screen shots of Cullum’s film and photographs taken Monday morning show the mess at East Hampton’s “best places.”

The mounds of trash and awful antics weren’t the most shocking discovery Cullum’s made this summer. On Sunday he related that a local police officer told him town harbor masters stop patrolling East Hampton beaches at midnight. They’re left unwatched until seven in the morning. “There’s seven hours when beaches are un-patrolled,” he reported. That’s the prime time for poor behavior. “I think it’s ludicrous,” he said, adding “everybody” knows the beaches are not watched. According to East Hampton Town Police Chief Ed Ecker, harbor masters will often stay on until 2 AM on weekends, if it looks like there’s a lot of activity. He disputed the notion that after midnight is “prime time” for unsavory shoreline activity. “The beaches are packed up until midnight, that’s why we schedule the way we do. Typically by two, things have calmed down,” he said.

CPF: Preserving Community Character? By Emily Toy

After 15 years in place, a specific fund within the town’s budget may be getting tighter policies around it. The Community Preservation Fund, designed in 1998 to protect

land used for historic preservation, parks and recreation, open space and agriculture, “has some policy issues. That’s according to CPF legislation author Assemblyman Fred Thiele,

who led a discussion on instituting CPF policies last Friday afternoon at Southampton Town Hall. “There have been policy issues,â€? Thiele said at a special meeting with the Southampton Town Board, CPF co-author Senator Ken LaValle, and other town officials. “Certain transactions proposed have generated policy issues,â€? he added. Some concerns Thiele listed included: • The relationship of town government with the CPF and conservation organizations, • Whether or not CPF should be acquiring land from conservation organizations, • Limitations on the kinds of purchases being made,

Fred Thiele discusses CPF.

• What is land that is already protected? Another issue that came up when discussing CPF was the concept of farmland use. Thiele posed a question: Are farmers being crowded out of the market because protected agricultural lands are going to another use? “Farmland development rights have been acquired in this town,â€? Thiele said. “How much land has been converted to non-farming use? Is this a real problem? Is CPF the proper tool for this?â€? John Halsey, executive director of the Peconic Land Trust, and member of the panel before the town board last week, said the CPF is “about preserving community character.â€? Southampton real estate agent Paul Brennan reminded the panel, town board and 20 plus audience members the whole purpose of the CPF since its inception. “The purpose at the time was for the public,â€? he said. “We kept our eye on the prize and didn’t change it, because if it changed we’d lose the respect and trust of the public. The only thing that’s changed is money. It’s opened the eyes of people who may want to cash out.â€? Bob DeLuca, president of Group for the East End posed two questions during the discussion: • What’s the potential of land that’s protected? • How does the town see their role post-purchase? R i c h a r d A m p e r, e x e c u t i v e director of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, said he “would love an understanding of what consequences from buying land from conservation organizations are different when conservation groups are trying to buy. Sure, we want to protect farming, the question is, can we? Is the CPF supposed to fix this?â€? Thiele said he hoped the panel would be able to meet in a month or less to revisit the issues talked about last week and possibly find recommendations through further discussion to fix them. Dems “Blueprint” For Governing By Kitty Merrill

Independent / Kitty Merrill

Democratic candidates for East Hampton Town Board: Kathee Burke-Gonzalez, Larry Cantwell, and Job Potter. Cantwell is running unopposed for supervisor; his running mates seek seats on the town board.

They have a good understanding of how government works and how to make it work better. That’s how Larry Cantwell, the unopposed candidate for East Hampton Town Supervisor feels about his running mates on the Democratic ticket – Job Potter and Kathie Burke-Gonzalez. Last Friday the threesome met with local media to discuss a 23page statement that offers an overview of the hopefuls’ stance on issues from budget to code enforcement to managing growth and the environment and more. 9 weeks to go!

“Where We Stand,” a blueprint for any future town board. The need for a return to civility in town hall was a recurrent theme as the candidates answered questions about their platform. (Find it in its entirety on the EHdems website.) Cantwell spoke of an “adversarial environment” created by the current administration that results in “employees feel[ing] like they’re under siege.” Potter echoed the observation. “The biggest thing people mention on the street by far is the animosity on the town board and how people are treated,” he said. BurkeGonzalez noted that during hamlet “Listen-ins” the candidates host, people notice and remark on how the members of the ticket seem to like each other and how that’s “refreshing.” That doesn’t mean they’re walking in lock step, however. Countering Republican ads warning of the danger of a one-party town board, Cantwell pointed out that the blueprint was the result of lively discussion and compromise. He made the assertion, especially, in relation to the airport. The rumor mill has run rampant with predictions that a Democratic majority would refuse Federal Aviation Administration funding in an effort to gain total control of and eventually close East Hampton Airport. Cantwell made clear his ticket plans to conduct an in-depth analysis of the costs of operating the airport, and future capital projects needed there before making any decisions about FAA money. Continuing with the topic of money, the three believe too much of the town’s budget is reliant upon property taxes. They plan to investigate alternative nontax sources of revenue, with an emphasis on revenues generated from non-resident sources. The blueprint notes East Hampton Village collects over $1 million in non-resident parking permits, and while the town is ten times its size, its coffers fill only to the tune of $400,000 for non-resident parking permits. The candidates plan to look at health insurance costs, which account for $16.6 million of the town’s almost $70 million annual budget. Could employees accept incentives to have spouses use insurance provided by their own employers rather than the town? That’s a question the Dems will strive to answer. All East End police agencies that have been affected by the recent rash of thefts have collaborated their efforts to investigate these crimes, which appear to be connected. Unsolved Crimes East Hampton Village Police are dealing with a bevy of unsolved crimes that occurred in the past week. On August 19 a bicycle made by ”a French company” was left behind the Golden Pear. It was unlocked and someone swiped it. On the same day a passerby told police an Acura was parked in a handicapped space on Gay Lane without the appropriate sticker. It got away. On August 20 two intoxicated males were spotted at the train station. They eluded capture. On August 17 a woman left her pocketbook and checkbook in her unlocked car with the window half open, in the Reutershan parking lot. Despite the presence of a half-dozen highly trained counterterrorist TCOs someone slipped through the wall of security and pilfered the items. On August 20 a Newtown Lane homeowner called police on a raccoon rummaging through the garbage pail. By the time police arrived he was gone, possibly fleeing on a French bicycle. On Friday s o m e o n e r e p o r t e d a n injured deer on Woods Lane – possibly carrying a pocketbook and checkbook. Police couldn’t locate it. On Friday someone spotted a man “dressed in black carrying a black back sack.” The caller said the man “was engaging in illegal activity,” presumably making himself disappear. He had facial hair – that should narrow the search down. Police are asking anyone with any information about the above crimes to contact them. Note: the wanted individuals may be armed and dangerous -- do not attempt to apprehend them without advanced weapons of your own.

sponsored by the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerc will be held September 6 to 8. HarborFest began as the Old Whalers’ Festival in 1963 and. Over the decades has grown into a three-day festival complete with music, food tastings, contests, historic tours and, of course, the famous whaleboat races, which will take place throughout the weekend off Windmill Beach in Sag Harbor. Started in 1963 as a way of attracting visitors to Sag Harbor early in the season, the Old Whalers’ Festival celebrated the community’s historic past and helped put money in merchants’ coffers when they needed it most — late June, after a long winter and spring and before July brought the tourists and the money. The Festival, with John Steinbeck as its honorary chairman, and the International Whaleboat Competition attracting teams from around the globe, brought coverage from the New York Daily News, ABC television’s Wide World of Sports and media from across the country and set Sag Harbor on a course that made it a destination for vacationers and boaters moving up and down the East Coast. This year, the successor to the Old Whalers’ Festival, the Sag HarborFest, honors the 50-year anniversary of festivals celebrating the village’s maritime history. The festival was revived in 1990 to celebrate the publication of Dorothy Zaykowski’s history of the village, Sag Harbor: An American Beauty, has, for the better part of two decades, tried to honor the traditions established by the original Old Whalers Festival. Each year it has added events and competitions, tours and attractions to keep visitors engaged and entertained. And each year organizers contemplate what the fest might bring, echoing Steinbeck’s observation in his “Welcome to the second annual Old Whalers’ Festival: “No one can foresee what will happen here but the prospects are dreadful and beautiful to contemplate. But after all, the Old Whalers whom we celebrate lived dangerously, and we cannot let them down. The weekend will kickoff with a benefit party at the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum (sagharborwhalingmuseum.org) on Friday night from 6 to 9 PM. The “HarborFest Fiesta will feature Montaco Truck tacos, Montauk Brewing Company beer, Channing Daughters wine, ice cream from Sylvester & Co. and music by DJ Mister Lama. The famous Chowder Contest will take place on Sunday and the 2013 Whaleboat Champion will be crowned after two days of intense races.

Dear East Hampton Voter There are five seats on the Town Board. Three votes are needed to pass a law. With Democrat Larry Cantwell running unopposed for Supervisor and two sitting Democrats already on the Town Board (who will remain on the Town Board for 2 more years), local Democrats are already assured of a working majority. In January, local Democrats will hold 3 of the 5 seats on the Town Board. If two additional Democrats are also elected this November, it will give the Democratic Party unchecked power over our community, including borrowing and spending. Remember the last time local Democrats had complete control was during the McGintee / Potter administration. Their unchecked power began and brought East Hampton to the brink of bankruptcy, spending money the town didn’t have, and raiding our Community Preservation fund to pay town expenses. The State of New York had to intervene to rescue the town’s finances and get the land preservation program back on track. On election day, don’t let history repeat itself. Re-elect Councilman Dominick Stanzione and Independent candidate Fred Overton. Dominick has proven himself to be a hard-working independent thinking person who is dedicated to serving East Hampton. A vote for Dominick is a vote for healthy, balanced government. Fred’s 24 years experience in town government and bi-partisan workmanship will serve us well. It’s the smart thing to do. Sincerely, Paul Scheerer, East Hampton Village John Kowalenko, Springs Peter Rana, Jr., Amagansett

Independent Election Coverage

Cantwell To GOP: Thanks, But No, Thanks Yesterday morning, as The Independent went to press, Larry Cantwell, the Democrat who is running unopposed for East Hampton Town Supervisor, released the following statement. A number of Republicans have suggested writing his name in on the ballot during next month’s republican primary. Here’s his response: I am filing a candidate declination form with the Suffolk County Board of Elections for the Republican Primary on September 10 in order to make clear that I am not a candidate in this primary election. I am doing so now because I do not want Republican voters who may cast a vote in the primary to be misled. The effort to promote my candidacy has not been authorized by me; in fact no one even asked me if I would agree to accept. Several months ago I was asked by the Republican leader if I would consider being screened for Supervisor which I politely declined because I honestly believed the voters of East Hampton deserve a choice in the election for Supervisor. With the Independence, Democrat, and Working Families Party nominations there is ample opportunity for every voter who wishes to support me to do so. I continue to believe this and I hope the participants in the write in primary for Supervisor will choose a candidate so an honest debate of the serious issues our town faces can occur. Everyone in the community can be confident of this: If I am elected, with or without opposition, my style of governing, of building consensus, and seeking compromise that leaves everyone well-served, will be the same. I also want to make clear I fully support Job Potter and Kathee Burke-Gonzalez for town board because I believe they have the right temperament, experience, and commitment to help me lead East Hampton into the future. To add my name to the Republican ticket would call into question my enthusiastic support for them.

Sightings by kitty merrill In August’s waning weeks, The Hamptons continue to be bursting at the seams with people, many of them among our country’s most wealthy, powerful and celebrated. Like last summer President Bill Clinton and his better half former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reportedly rented a home in the area for the last two weeks of the month. He was seen at the Artists & Writers softball game last week and back again on Main Street in Montauk on Sunday. Moving from national to state bigwigs, Governor Andrew Cuomo was hanging at the Hampton Classic Horse Show over the weekend after visiting the North Fork and stopping in at the Long Island Wine Council’s Harvest East End 2013 to present McCall Wines in Cutchogue with the Governor’s Cup for “Winery of the Year” on Saturday. Speaking of the North Fork, Avicii and Adam Lambert kept the partying going last Friday night after the AFTEE concert at The Riverhead Project. The musicians arrived at

11 PM for a late night dinner with their entourage, including Avicii’s girlfriend. Star sightings this week include Academy Award-winner Anjelica Huston, who dined at the Coast Grill in North Sea, and Jon Bon Jovi at his place, the Blue Parrot, in East Hampton on Sunday. Rachel Zoe was spied browsing the healthy goods at Second Nature in Southampton last week. Lenny Kravitz, Katie Holmes and Mary Kate Olsen were among the glitterati who came out to support the Apollo Theater at a benefit held at Ron Perleman’s manse in East Hampton Saturday night. Lorraine Bracco, Bill O’Reilly, Russell Simmons, Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx and Pharrell Williams, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Howard Stern, Ellen DeGeneres were also on the star-studded guest list. Not seen around town? Amagansett stalwart Alec Baldwin. He was in the city with wife Hilaria and newborn daughter Carmen Gabriela, who was born last Friday.

Commission Marine 41 Last week Sheriff Vincent DeMarco was on hand at the Coast Guard station in Hampton Bays for the commissioning of Marine 41, a Chemical, Biological, Radiological Nuclear and Explosive Response vessel procured through a $1.2 million FEMA grant. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office manages the grant, which is earmarked for use by the East End Marine Task Force. The vessel is equipped with infrared cameras, side scan sonar, radar, chart plotters and a dual screen GPS. A computer is installed on the vessel, which provides access to DMV data, and other law enforcement databases. The cabin is equipped with oxygen, a defibrillator, as well as EMT equipment, and can accommodate a patient on a backboard. The ceremony concluded with a dockside blessing. Also on August 21, Sheriff DeMarco honored Coast Guard Sector Long Island for its part in July’s successful rescue of Montauk fisherman John Aldridge. K.M.

RICK’S SPACE A Day In The Life Ran into Brad and Bif at polo the other day. Brad tells me Muffin isn’t her usual self, must be this dreadful heat. I dare say it’s best to stay out of the sun or risk a frightful burn! Went to the club for luncheon. Carter, Brock and Roland were already there when I arrived. Brock had a very wonderful puce cashmere sweater draped over his shoulders. “Love the look, old man,” I told him. Once Fitz and Alistair arrived we settled on the poached lobster salad and shared a bit of bubbly. We discussed the sad state of the world. It does seem such a tragedy that so many, so many of the little people are so dreadfully, well, little.

Kensington came over to the table and told us one of his housekeepers walks to work because she can’t afford a motor vehicle. The poor savage. I mean, really, darlings, can’t she simply take the golf cart to work? Later I met Fraser, Rutherford and Kinsley by the pool. Fraser wanted to go over a business proposition – he’s raising capital for this upstart company, a mortgage provider that will lend money to the poorer families – well let me restate that – families from the other side of the tracks. They deserve to have homes of their own, or at least trailers – well maybe tents, at least. Of course, they will have to pay an

enormous amount of interest, but that’s because they have no money, I’m afraid, none at all to speak of, so we are taking huge risk, and that is extremely bothersome to us. So of course we should be handsomely rewarded. Later I played a round of golf with Pa-Pa and his good chums Burke and Ezra. We were having quite the day until one of the boys became a bit winded. I dare say those caddies are so unnerving. I do wish they would keep up with us – we like to play at a brisk pace! We caught up with the ladies at the annual benefit at the museum for the walk-in clinic – they do such good work at the clinic, you know, and the doctors who do so much need a lounge they can unwind in after dealing with those, how do I say, the very elderly, people. They are you know, so very old, and I must say, some have incurable diseases and they insist on going on and on with their little lives. It’s rather sad. I’ve told Dr. Tomkins, my doctor, many times – you and your team had better make sure that doesn’t happen to me! Imagine not playing tennis! Muffin, Felicity, and Constance were socializing with the other wives when we arrived. “What do they do all day?” Brad wondered aloud to the other fellows as we approached the women. In this day and age, frankly, when so may wives lend a hand by helping the nannies and maid staff, what exactly do our wives do other then go to those afternoon teas? Certainly it is not a productive day to wile away the hours without accomplishing anything! Just then Cornelia approached us excitedly. “You’ll never guess what happened today!” “One of the butlers called in sick?” “Even more ghastly,” she said.

“There is someone playing golf at the club without proper attire?” I asked in disbelief. “Even worse. The Bentley has a flat tire! And I was running late for my appointment. And I asked Maria for a ride and she doesn’t own a car.” So there it was. The face of poverty, delivered right to our front door. “Well, why didn’t she give you a ride in her golf cart?” Brad asked, genuinely confused. In fact, there was a shared sense of bewilderment in the room that was palpable. It was Fraser who suggested the obvious. Why not lend the poor woman enough money for an auto? It wouldn’t have to be much, of course – I mean these people think running water is a luxury! She would have to make monthly payments, of course – well, better make them weekly. And the interest rate would have to be substantial – I mean, my god, we are not communists. Perhaps then Maria could take her mother to the clinic! Just then the waiter approached. “Oh darling, you must try these marvelous little pastries though I don’t know what it is the chef calls them!” Cornelia exclaimed. “They are frightfully good. And do have a cocktail!” She giggled freely. She reminded me of her days at Smith – so vibrant, so young! Ah, we were so in love then! We didn’t need Bentleys to be happy in college! Of course, we each had a Mercedes. I mean my god, we’re not savages. Well, I have a 9 AM tee time with Finn, Chad, Broderick, and Spence. Election Season Is In Full Swing Whew! Labor Day weekend is upon us, which means for better or worse things will start quieting down a bit and, for locals, some semblance of normalcy will return to our lives. First, the good news: it was a great summer. The weather was excellent. Business was booming – our merchants must be thrilled. The excellent weather fueled a healthy influx of visitors, great for motels and summer rentals. You would have to be an extreme curmudgeon not to admit it’s been a blast! The bad news was, of course, the traffic. Perry Duryea’s vision of a highway bypass road four decades ago was obviously the way to go – witness the North Fork, where the north road allows motorists to bypass the local Main Streets. Duryea was stymied by “environmentalists” who sold the public on their storyline – that Duryea wanted to make it easier for tourists to get to Montauk. In reality, he was concerned with the time it took ambulances from Montauk to reach Southampton Hospital. Many of the same people who questioned his motives quietly bought up land in the Northwest and other areas the Montauk Highway Bypass was slated to run through, paying cheap prices because the landowners were convinced some super highway was being laid out. Later, a lot of the same people who squashed the project got rich by selling the land for huge profits – the deed transfers are here to see for anyone who doubts the truth. As summer ends, hopefully traffic will subside, and the good weather will continue. Our attention turns to the local elections. We will be interviewing many of the candidates in the coming weeks, and have many of them in for face-to-face debates. Readers and candidates are invited to use our letters section to chime in with your thoughts and observations. The Independent is the only local newspaper on the East End that endorses candidates based on their merits, not political ideology. We are not beholden to anyone but the people of this community, especially the taxpayers. Let’s elect the best and brightest to represent us, not the candidates with agendas, clandestine or otherwise. The Lesson Of Fort Pond House The brouhaha over East Hampton Town’s decision to sell the Fort Pond House –

Independent VOICES Think Big Dear Editor, In the next 10 years or so, Plum Island will likely come under the jurisdiction of Southold Town. How this diamond in the rough will be zoned and used is of importance not only to Southold but to the

entire Peconic Bay region. It could become not only an economic generator and a job creator but a worldclass tourist attraction. If planned correctly, it could also become a yearround destination for the public to enjoy for generations to come. Now is the time to get involved so that the opportunity to create something of great value is not lost because of lack of interest, creativity, and/or imagination. Let’s think big. What we have is a

which was recently rescinded -- brings up an issue all municipalities should address. Should a town sell-off real estate it owns to help keep taxes low? Certainly East Hampton, reeling from a financial scandal that left the town $30 million in the hole, had reason to consider doing so. Unfortunately, the debate broke down along political lines. Instead of a healthy debate about whether the community would benefit more from the sale of the asset, Fort Pond House became some sort of symbol, some environmental gem that was treasured by the people and utilized by community groups. Its sale, some said, would cause a giant void in the lives of so many of our citizens. Let’s tell it like it is: the place is a dump. Since the town purchased it a decade ago, it was allowed to fall into a dreadful state of disrepair. The few community groups that did use it abused the privilege, leaving, in some cases, half-eaten food lying around. No one attempted to clean it up, even after the impassioned uproar to save it became deafening. There is little doubt the recent decision to keep Fort Pond House and the property around it as a “Nature Park” was politically motivated. Notice, though, that no provisions were made as to who is responsible for cleaning it up and renovating it, how much money it will cost to do so, and where that money is going to come from. Knowing East Hampton like we do, the next thing that will happen (after the election) is some friend of a friend will get appointed caretaker, and money will be allotted to clean up the mess, and the so-called community groups that were supposedly using it will go about the business of trashing it again, resulting in more money wasted on more cleanups. The fact is, the building in its current state is uninhabitable, and isn’t going to be used by anyone. Furthermore, it was always underutilized. What it all means is this: a municipality shouldn’t sell off its assets, but it needs to take care of everything it owns. And make no mistake, the Fort Pond House was allowed to go to hell, and not by the present administration. The decision to sell it was based in part on the fact that it was no longer a viable place for the community to use. If there is blame to be placed, place it on those who voted to buy it and then looked the other way – and those who used and abused it. potential crown jewel. JACK MCGREEVY

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 27. 2:43 AM we were awakened again by the helicopter departing. When contacted this morning, an airport representative stated that it will take 24 hours to find out the identity of the helicopter. So, in these days of unrest and Homeland Security, East Hampton Airport personnel have no idea who is flying in and out of their airport in the middle of the night, awakening residents in the process. In an earlier letter I stated that we were considering relocating, in part due to the constant barrage of aircraft over our home. However, we have lived and been a part of this community for over 35 years. Our friends, lives and volunteer commitments are here. We love Sag Harbor and have chosen to stay and support Quiet Skies Coalition and other organizations who have dedicated themselves to bringing back some of the peace that we all moved here for. This morning the airport informed us that the offending helicopter was from Talon Air operating out of Farmingdale and flying at an altitude of 1,800 feet. It was also not flying any of the suggested routes. The airport is not able to fine Talon Air for its complete disregard as to curfew, route or altitude but hopefully, making their bad behavior public will help send them a clear message. Dear Rick, In the Independent News on May 8, Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst shrugged off her apparent campaign finance violations as “no big deal.” In the Southampton Press on August 21, Throne-Holst claims her errors are “honest mistakes” and all discrepancies have been corrected by new treasurer, a professional accountant. It remains my opinion that there is a pattern of dishonesty with Throne-Holst and skirting of the law. Her campaign fund has a history of errors, omissions and apparent violations of NYS Election Law dating back to when she first ran for office in 2007. She and her campaign treasurers repeatedly have been late with filing the required disclosure reports, routinely accepted donations in excess of the legal limits set forth for a Southampton Town candidate, and failed to disclose with specificity and clarity many campaign expenses and reimbursements paid. Like the terrible scandals we hear so often about politics in Albany and in Washington, every elected official or candidate who believes that the laws

Madelyn I don’t want to go back yet. At the end of the school year when everyone was talking about coming back to school and seeing each other again, I was like, well . . . I want to see my friends again - but I mean, I don’t want to go back to school so soon! Caroline Well, I guess it’s time to think about getting all your stuff ready, like your backpack and all your school supplies. I’m happy and sad about it. I’m excited about getting to see all my friends. But I’m also sad because summer is over. Will I’m happy to go back to school so I can see my friends again. I miss my friends. I mind the homework part of going back to school. I’m definitely not looking forward to that part of it. But that won’t be so terrible. Hannah I don’t want school to start yet. Summer went really fast. I realized how fast it went when I got back from camp. Too fast. I like the idea of seeing my friends again. But I’d rather see them at the beach.

don’t apply to them weakens our system of government. Many people eligible to vote don’t – opting instead to just sit at home because they feel disenfranchised and frustrated, painting all politicians with a broad brush as “corrupt.” The scandals and repeated acts in violation of law are disconcerting and in this case, especially so since the campaign finance disclosure law was enacted so that the public could see who contributes to any political candidate and specifically what that candidate is using those campaign monies for. For over 18 months into her second term in office, Throne-Holst’s campaign fund reported negative balances on disclosure reports over several reporting periods. The only way a campaign fund has a negative balance on a disclosure report is when reported expenses exceed more than that reported as contributions received. However, there was no inadvertent omission of contributions received over these reporting periods during 2011 and

2012. In October 2011, Throne-Holst reported over $10,118.95 in refunds to donors due to acceptance in excess of legal limits from various contributors. This resulted in fund balances on subsequent disclosure reports to the NYS BOE during 2011-2012 to show as negative amounts, even though her actual checking account had a more positive balance since the refund checks were not yet redeemed by those contributors. Throne-Holst continued to expend the ill-gotten monies while holding the office of Supervisor during 2011-2012 and to further her re-election efforts in 2013 since the refund checks have still not been redeemed by those contributors. Instead of “reserving” that money and insisting the donors take back the amounts that exceeded max. contribution limits in her prior races, Throne-Holst dipped into those proceeds until she held a 2013 Campaign Kick-Off fundraiser to seek a third term in office as Supervisor. In May 2013, amendments were filed by Throne-Holst to prior disclosure reports from 2011 to remove the previously reported refunds altogether. By removing this 2011 refund schedule, the prior reported negative balances were changed on the public reports to make it seem as if all is on the up-and-up. In my opinion, it is an ongoing attempt to deceive. It is a crime to furnish false information to the Board of Elections. Real Journalists Dear Editor, Rick – Couldn’t agree more with your editorial concerning the news blackout, or should we say propaganda control by the

liberal media here on the East End. You note the lack of information given to the public, by all but The Independent concerning the ethics probe of our Congressman Tim Bishop. Last week’s letter, by James Boyd, and your “editor’s note” tell the sad story of censorship in the East End media. Interesting that this happens in “liberal land,” a place where the Manhattanites and other liberals summer and yet they appear to condone this news blackout. To them it’s only “News” if they say it’s “News” and

Cantwell hopes he can meet with current Supervisor Bill Wilkinson so he can make suggestions for inclusion in next year’s budget before it is adopted. He’d like to figure out a way to overhaul the supervisor’s office to include an administrative assistant who will operate as chief of staff, as existed during prior administrations. The assistant would function in a manner similar to the position Cantwell held as Village Administrator. The candidates agreed enforcement of quality of life is a major issue in the community. It’s

not just about hiring more code enforcement officers, Cantwell said. The town board has to establish enforcing housing and the zoning code as a priority, and make it clear to town employees and department heads that it is a priority. When it comes to unruly nightclub activity, Potter, a onetime planning board member, plans to look closely at approved site plans for certain establishments to make sure they are operating within the strictures of their approvals. There’s nothing wrong with young people coming to town to enjoy The Hamptons and Montauk, Cantwell opined, but a balance must be struck that will keep nighttime activity from infringing on neighbors and the community. The candidates’ blueprint, Cantwell said, was designed to start the fall campaign off on a substantive note. The issues they outlined are, he said, “a beginning point.” As the campaign progresses, the issues will be

discussed in greater depth, he predicted. Of the candidates’ “blueprint,” Burke-Gonzalez said,

(L to R) Susie Barry Roden, Stacy Quarty, Ginny Salerno (President, LI2Day Walk) and Noreen Wohlgemuth (Treasurer, LI2Day Walk.) Above, the Heaven Can Wait team.

Mission Expanded, Goals Met Earlier this month Stacy Quarty and Susie Roden traveled to Smithtown to receive grant money for their local team “Heaven Can Wait at the Li2Day Walk for Breast Cancer. Team co-captains Quarty and Roden reported, “We’ve surpassed our $100,000 goal! and brought back a check for $110,600. These funds will be used to support local breast cancer organizations: Lucia’s Angels, The Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital (CWC) and the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center. The pair met with key board members of the LI2Day Walk last November, urging them to expand their mission to include other gynecological cancers, as local breast coalitions have. At the beneficiary luncheon, the LI2Day Walk announced they have expanded their mission to include ovarian, uterine and other gynecological cancers. “We’re happy to report we’ll be able to use our LI2Day funds to help even more women and families in our community, said Roden, who is president of the CWC.

Green Art Designer Green Art designer Helen Murray recently completed a full- scale kitchen remodel that included a breakfast bar. Once clients selected a white inset door from Dura Supreme, she incorporated wall cabinets with glass doors on all sides, which hang from the ceiling, giving the breakfast bar a dramatic yet light and airy feel. The primary workspace is the island, measuring 120 x 54 inches, with a 48-inch Viking cooktop, downdraft ventilation system, bar sink, microwave and marvel wine refrigerator. Polished nickel faucets and fixtures are from ROHL Faucets’ Country Collection. Completing the look was the perimeter, with its 36-inch paneled SubZero refrigerator; double wall oven and warming drawer from Décor, along with a perfect white farm house sink from Blanco. Green Art’s Southampton Showroom is located at 1576 County Road 39. Call 631-488-4210.

Rare Fish Found In Shinnecock A biologist at Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center, Todd Gardner, has identified a rare deepwater fish collected last week in shallow waters as the Deepwater Anthias. A friend of Gardner’s, Bob Janke, was on a snorkeling trip in Shinnecock Bay when he discovered a small fish hiding among the cracks of a rotting piling in three feet of water. He described it as “very similar in shape and behavior to the creole fish, but pink rather than maroon.” As Gardner waited for Janke to bring his unusual specimen to the Aquarium, “I immediately thought of the Anthiinae, the subfamily of Serranids that includes Anthias and related genera, but I tried not to get too excited. As far as I know, there are no shallow-water members of this group in the Atlantic.” Within minutes, Janke arrived at the Aquarium with the fish in question. Covering the bottom of the jar was a layer of loose tunicates, blue mussels, and other invertebrates as well as some seaweed. Suddenly a tiny Anthias popped out from under one of the mussels. Gardner sent photos to experts at the Smithsonian Institute and Dynasty Marine. They agreed that it has to be one of two species: Hemanthias vivanus (red barbier) or Choranthius tenuis (threadnose

bass), both of which are usually found at depths of 200 to 2000 feet. Regardless of which species it turns out to be, this capture will probably turn out to be a record for both range and depth, according to a release from the aquarium. Not surprisingly Atlantic Anthiines are poorly studied and rarely displayed in aquaria. This specimen should provide local researchers with unique opportunities to learn more about deepwater fishes.

Gravestone Erected When the famous American artist Irving Ramsay Wiles (18611948) died, his heirs could not afford to mark his burial location, and so his grave remained unmarked. When his daughter, Gladys Lee Wiles (1888-1983), another wellknown painter, died she was buried next to her father, but her grave was also left unmarked due to a lack of funds. Both graves may have remained unmarked forever if it were not for the persistence of one local historian.

“It just did not seem right,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of three books published by the Society that document the history of the Wiles family of painters, “that these two prominent artists were buried in an unmarked grave here on the North Fork of Long Island.” Fleming raised enough money to design and erect a permanent marker over the graves of the two artists. “It just seemed to be the correct course of action,” he noted. The staff of Staples Monuments in Greenport, worked with Fleming to create a flat granite marker for the graves of both artists as well as Irving Wiles’ wife, May, in the Cutchogue Cemetery where they are buried near other important American artists, including members of the Prellwitz family.

If you are considering a pet, please, remember: adopt, don’t shop! Visit your local shelter. Pictured, is Sophie, at the Brookhaven Shelter. She will stretch her paw through the kennel to catch your attention. With each passer by she asks, “will you take me home?” Don’t be tempted by white poster boards planted along main roads, with “Puppies For Sale” scrawled in permanent marker. Many will arrive at the shelter in a year or two, fully grown. But the ones that are there today need you now. For more information, call 631-2864940 or visit www.brookhaven.org/ animalshelter.

At 4:58 PM on August 20 the East Hampton Fire Department “White Knights” Heavy Rescue Squad was called to assist members of the East Hampton Volunteer Ambulance at 32 Stratton Square for a male subject who had taken a fall from the first floor into the basement of a home under construction at that address. Fire department personnel used a Stokes basket, along with a combination of ropes and ladders, to safely remove the victim from the basement to a waiting ambulance for transport to the hospital.

Real Estate Recovery Continues By Rick Murphy

Sometimes real estate brokers let their natural exuberance overstate market conditions, but this time around no sugar coating is necessary -- the numbers don’t lie. There is no mistaking the upward trend we are experiencing on the East End, on Long Island, and even nationally. The market is recovering from the 2007-08 doldrums, and the upturn through the second quarter of this year is now tangible.

And though a glut of properties remains on the market – keeping prices sluggish – inventory is slowly falling, an indicator that a seller’s market may be on the horizon, though not the immediate horizon. Sales in Manhattan, oftentimes a precursor to East End real estate trends, are on fire. According to The Real Deal, sales of co-ops and condos in the second quarter surged 28 percent over the same time period year earlier. According to a report furnished by Corcoran’s Jason Schommer,

land sales and new construction are picking up locally, and sales in Montauk in particular are surging. The Real Deal’s Hayley Kaplan reports sales in the Hamptons are up over 25 percent from last year’s second quarter numbers. More important, listing inventory is down 12 percent. Sales are particularly active in the $1 to $4 million range, and extreme bargains – under $400,000 – that were fairly prevalent a year ago are drying up quickly. That is not to say there aren’t bargains to be had.

In Amagansett, the largest ticket punched in the second quarter was 88 Indian Wells Highway, which sold for $7.5 million, a cool two mil below the original asking price. In general, the Wall Street Journal confirmed what the numbers show: the luxury market actually experienced a decrease of 10 percent in the second quarter. That number may well be deceiving, though – a number of high ticket properties transferred at the end of 2012 to avoid paying increased real estate taxes, thus likely skewing the figures. In Bridgehampton, parcels of land at 683 and 699 Ocean Road sold for a combined $28.5 million, Schommer reported. A residence at 157 Jobs Lane, listed at $10.95 million, sold for $10.1 million. Surprisingly, there were scores of sales for under $1 million in East Hampton; including two for under $300,000 and another for $375,000. Only one property transferred in the eight-figure range: 41 Apaquoque Road, for $11.2 million. Pricey Sagaponack was the scene of a $24 million sale, at 39 Fairfield Pond Lane. An estate at 320 Murray Place in Southampton changed hands for $25 million. According to the Elliman Report, the median sale price for the second quarter, $920,000, rose 8.2 percent from the previous year. The National Board of Realtors report a noticeable upswing in real estate sales, especially recently. Existing home sales rose 6.5 percent in July from a year earlier, and median prices have enjoyed a double digit increase for seven consecutive months.

Magnificent Muddy Marshes

By Crystal Possehl-Oakes

I was wading chest deep in a pair of waders three sizes too big. I didn’t mind; in the water they fit just fine. When the water is high and still coming into the salt marsh, the fishing is a bit better and it passed the time until the tide was low enough for me to explore the inhabitants below my feet. A few yards away, the water started to churn and I saw a few fish tails in the air. It looked as if a school of snapper Bluefish just

found their dinner, so I cast my line in that direction, with no luck. Many fish will use the marsh as a buffet and a nursery. The grasses and seaweeds provide excellent cover for eggs and fry and there is plenty of food, from the various animals in the mud, to the ones swimming or drifting, to the ones that live among the marsh grasses. Standing in the water, I saw a school of fish fry trying to figure out if I was shelter or food. They gave up

when they realized that I was a poor source for either. That particular school will feed in the marsh as they grow on plankton and small invertebrates and then, finally, any fish smaller than they are. Once they are large enough, they will move to the ocean and be recognized by a fisherman as Striped Bass. Down by my feet, I felt a repeated tapping; it was probably a crab that decided it didn’t like me there and was trying to shoo me away. I gently nudged the crab and it left me alone, going off to search for more food. Behind me, a fisherman had left the remains of his/her catch in the water line. An army of small snails called Mud Dog Whelks had found the smorgasbord. The fish remains were barely recognizable under all of the Mud Whelks. When the water retreated hours later, the fish were mostly gone thanks to a few hundred snails.

When the water was finally low enough to see the bottom, I started walking in to exchange my fishing pole. Many of the moving clumps of detritus I saw on the way in were actually Spider Crabs. They had decorated their backs with whatever was around to hide themselves from the hungry eyes of fish and gulls. The mud looked like a confused roadmap with the trails of the various snails, worms, and crabs. The bulldozing Horseshoe Crabs left some of the widest trails as they searched the mud for young clams, worms and tasty carrion. Once back on dry land, I gathered my shovel and sifter to discover what was living in the salt marsh mud. The most common inhabitants were the iridescent green Clam Worms and the dark red Blood Worms. Shore birds, like the Willet and Spotted Sandpiper, would have been feasting on these worms if my presence hadn’t disturbed them. Once I satisfied my curiosity, I headed back in once more. The Ribbed Mussels that attached themselves to the base of the Salt Marsh Cord Grass were now exposed to the sun but had sealed themselves tightly to avoid drying out. While filtering for food, the mussels collected a lot of sediment, which was discarded below them. This discarded sediment helps expand the marsh by giving the Salt Marsh Cord Grass more substrate to grow in. On my way back to the road, I passed the holes of Sand Fiddler Crabs and the balls of sa nd that they left behind in their search for food among the sand grains. A Snowy Egret snapped its neck forward into the water a short distance away and swallowed a small fish headfirst. It then noticed me and took off to hunt in a quieter area. As I put my gear in my car, I heard a high-pitched “cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep. Above me, an Osprey was circling the water looking for fish and talking to its mate back in the nest. The Osprey probably had better luck fishing than I did. I will be back another day, for more fishing and to discover who else lives in the ever-changing marsh. strong, entertaining, and thrilling. Were last Sunday an NFL Sunday, I undoubtedly would have been flipping back and forth on my television, between golf and football to follow the back nine. It was that exciting. But, the best part? Heading into this weekend, the top of the FedEx Cup Standings now looks like this: Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar and Justin Rose. The FedEx Cup playoffs will never trump college football or NFL ratings. But, those big names in the hunt over the next three weeks, have the potential to keep my thumbs busy on Saturday and Sunday. playoffs would always feel more similar to the laid back Phoenix Open than anything mirroring a major championship. The Major Championship season was over, and I figured golfers would take their foot off the pedal. Yet, with a total of $67 million in prize and bonus money, an $8 million purse at each FedEx Cup playoff event, $35 million in bonus money, with $10 million to the winner, the players are naturally into it. Even to multi-millionaires, that’s serious cash. Along with the money, each FedEx Cup playoff tournament appears to be growing in popularity and loyalty. I had the opportunity to go to The Barclays last Friday, and there was more intensity from the players and the fans, than I expected. Additionally, the drama on Sunday, with the NYC skyline as a backdrop, provided for some great television down the stretch. Adam Scott shot a final round 5 under, to finish at 11 under. He had to wait in the clubhouse as the pack chased him. Justin Rose had a birdie chance on the 18th hole to win, but bogeyed to finish one back. After birdies on 16

CHILDRENS PROGRAMS

As the seventh season of the Fed Ex Cup playoffs got underway, there seemed to be more buzz surrounding the month-long event than usual. The top five in the standings entering the playoffs were Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker, Phil Mickelson and Bill Haas; a solid top five to enter the home stretch of what’s been a riveting season for the PGA Tour. Three impact names, Adam Scott, Justin Rose, and Jason Dufner broke through for their first major victory. And arguably the sport’s most popular player, Phil Mickelson, won the British Open with an explosive Sunday round. Even Tiger Woods picking up five wins, but no majors, helped the sport. It keeps us all guessing, “When will he win number 15?” During the first couple seasons, I was often critical of the PGA Tour’s Fed Ex Cup playoffs. I felt it was a forced and fabricated event. Also, I believed it would fail to compete in September when college football and the NFL kicked off, and when the Major League Baseball went down the home stretch to the playoffs. and 17, Tiger Woods needed a birdie on 18 to force a playoff with Scott. As Woods strolled up the 18th with back spasms, it was impossible to not think of the incredible storylines involving a Woods-Scott playoff; both golfers, and Scott’s caddy, former Tiger bag-carrier and best man, Stevie Williams in the same group always makes for good TV. It was fantastic theatre as Woods’ birdie putt from off the green came up one ball rotation short of dropping. Tiger, the crowd, and CBS TV executives were begging the ball to turn once more, a la his chip-in on 16 at the 2005 Masters. In the group following Tiger, Gary Woodland had a birdie chance to force a playoff, but he pulled his putt, to seal the Scott victory. No, the drama from Sunday in Jersey City won’t be confused with a Sunday at Augusta. But, it was

Fishing  Report Like A Fluke Under Shallow Waters Shinnecock Bay/Inlet & Ocean Best news of the week has been the amount of large keeper fluke hitting our scale. Many fish over the seven pound mark taking most baits offered including gulps, smelts, Peruvian spearing, strip baits and

clams. Most fish came from the shallow water east of the inlet by the cheese house and the old castle, but most of the shallow water both east and west outside of the inlet has seen its fair share of keepers. The waters inside the bay have

been producing fluke too, but you really have to weed through the shorts to find one for the box. Triggerfish have been at the back of the inlet and along the east jetty taking clam baits. Out on the reef a good amount of sea bass have cooperated along with some fluke too. Blues are on the outer bar along the beaches feeding on sand eels and the big guys are lurking at the bottom of the inlet. Bass have been fairly quiet this week.

Peconic Bays Porgies continue to be the best bet with clam chum and clam baits over near Rogers’s Rock and by

Jessup’s. Reports of a few weakfish have surfaced coming out of the deeper holes in the cooler water.

S h o re Bo u n d /Su r f/Ca n a l / Ponquogue Bridge The fluke have been cooperating with the guys targeting them along the ocean beaches east of the inlet. They’re feeding on sand eels, diamond jigs, bucktails and bottom rigs all working. The jetties of the inlet have surrendered some decent fluke too; Joel Anthony had a 7.51-pounder on Wednesday failing for a pink gulp mullet. The east jetty has seen a good amount of triggerfish take clams. The night tides have seen a few bass but not much to speak of lately. Blues are running around following bait, watch for the birds working. Over at the Ponquogue Bridge fluke, triggerfish and snappers have been keeping anglers happy. The Shinnecock Canal is offering snappers and porgies along with a few small sea bass. Capt. Scott Jeffrey East End Bait & Tackle 631-728-1744

Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica

Commodore, First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard

Before Throwing In The (Electrical) Towel, Give It A Go Last week, we wrote about various techniques you could try before throwing the towel and calling for help, whether that be the towing services or your brother-in-law. (See The Independent, “Before You Throw In The Towel, Give It a Go!”) Mechanical issues are one thing. Electrical are another. This column is about that.

Safety Starts At The Dock . . . So said Admiral Halsey a half century ago. It was true then, true before, and true forever. And a key to safety of life at sea is a reliable boat under you. With the ever-increasing reliance on electronics and computers aboard, we need to be sure that our electrical system is ready to go. This starts with preventative maintenance (PM). I’ll admit that I hate PM. As I’m working on something, I’m saying to myself, “the odds on this being a problem are million-to-one!” But I keep working on it because a little voice in my head keeps saying, “wanna be that millionth guy?”

I start PM where the boat starts – with the ignition system. For most boats, it is simply a key and a safety-lanyard cut-off key. That is the lanyard that you are supposed to attach to yourself so, if you fall overboard, the boat doesn’t keep going down the bay or, worse, spin around until it runs you over. Most boaters don’t attach that lanyard to themselves for reasons that become self-evident if you’ve ever put it on. You reach over to help somebody with something two feet away and the boat stops. (There are electronic ones now that are wireless and let you walk around the boat to your heart’s content.)

Enclosed Engine Space? Quite likely, there is a solenoid switch down there which is an integral part of the starter system. It is mounted low on the engine, not too far from the bilge. Take a good look at it. If you see any salt on it, it is likely from evaporated seawater that has splashed on it. Think about

NOT TOO IMPRESSED WITH YOUR SANITATION SERVICE? Emil Norsic & Son has been delivering quality and reliability on the East End since 1932.

www.indyeastend.com

putting a splash plate under it, to keep the bilge water from giving it a bath in heavy seas. Also, check to see that the terminal nuts are properly tightened. You don’t want them working loose. My mechanics will tell you that faulty wiring connections are the most common reason for failure. Take a look at every wiring connection. Nothing wrong with removing them, checking them, then cleaning and refastening. Visually check the cable looms and look for signs of chafe or damage.

Battery Or Batteries Are the cables clean and securely fastened to the battery terminals? They shouldn’t have any “white powder” on them (leaking solution from the battery itself is likely the problem and that means it may be time for a new battery.) The cables shouldn’t move at all when prodded, even with a good rap with a hammer. If they do move, this can set up a condition of poor connectivity, high resistance, and poor starting power. Any good mechanic will check the battery for voltage. But, even if it reads 12 volts, it may not be giving out the proper voltage under starting load, which is the greatest time of energy drain on the batteries. Under start-up, a battery should never drop below 9.5 to 10 volts.

August 28, 2013

51

If it does, go back and check those terminal connections noted above. And don’t forget the negative post, too. It is just as important as the positive connection. A bad or loose negative connection can stop an engine as surely as no power at all. If the engine doesn’t get enough starting power to reach starting RPM, it just won’t start. Most of us think, ‘Ugh! The battery is dead,’ and move to get a new battery. There are over a dozen places where connections can work loose, almost imperceptive to the human eye – but not to the electronic components. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing . . .”

FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

THE INDEPENDENT ! Traveler Watchman

RTS

It’s Essential: Pre-Rank Your Players Almost all of the major Fantasy Football hosts have a mechanism to pre-rank players, and it is essential to understand why it is so important to do so. Many fantasy players believe the ranked players only come into play if you are not physically present at your draft i.e., you’re on autopilot. But how many times has your computer screen froze during a draft, or your computer crashed altogether? They’ll never admit as much, but oftentimes the glitz is on the other end. If CBS has a freeze during a draft, surely you don’t think it will go back and make things right afterwards. You’ll be stuck with whatever pick the system assigns to you. You’ve seen it happen before: you look at a guy’s roster and you see he drafted an injured player who is out for the year. The reason is that player was assigned to the team because the system’s rankings were entered before the injury. Go

in before the draft, move down the injured players, and move up rookies. If players are making a big impression in preseason, move them to you. Once you get into your draft room, after the traditional trash talking and physical threats are over with, pre-rank all the players in the draft according to the order you want them, breaking them down by position. Notice though, that there is a queue box in the draft room. Move your top ten picks into it. Remember your position need changes with each round. For example, if you pick a QB in the first round, you won’t want to queue up another right away. By keeping 10 players stacked in the Q-Box you’ll be insured should the system crash, the system will give you players you want while you re-boot. In the event of a massive computer failure, like a power outage, the draft software of the

REAL ESTATE

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

host will move to your pre-ranked list after the Q-Box is empty – at least you’ll be protected against taking injured players, or players you are convinced are going to be Fantasy duds. It is also important to know realtime rankings are more important than the rankings on the host sites. For example, T.Y. Hilton of the Colts had a ranking of between 40 to 50 on most sites; in reality, he’s moved into the top 30 after two impressive performances. Giovanni Bernard, the Cincinnati rookie running back, was rated as the fifth best rookie back a few weeks ago, somewhere between 30 and 40 overall. Now, he’s in the 20 to 25 range after a blistering touchdown run last week. However, the stock of Le’Veon Bell of Pittsburgh, the top rated rookie RB, has plummeted since he injured his foot last week. If you are drafting this week, he’s probably rated much too high in your system’s auto-rankings, which means if you’re not paying attention you’ll end up getting him too early in the draft. One guy we know actually ended up with Aaron Hernandez, who was recently indicted for first degree murder. If convicted he’s bound to be suspended for four games or so! Other risers to watch: Daryl Richardson was just named starting running back for the Rams; jack

IN THE NEWS

him up to between 17 and 20. Josh Gordon and Chris Givens are two wide receivers moving upwards, from the 40 to 50 range to about 30 or so. Michael Vick’s stock is skyrocketing now that he’s been named the Eagles’ starter: he was the top Fantasy Football QB in the league three years ago. What round do you take these players? That’s up to you. Be forewarned, though, in an experts’ league the team owners are extremely aggressive. If they really want a player they will go down and get him, maybe a round or so before he would figure to be picked. Dez Bryant is a great example – people are really high on him, so lately he’s been going late in the first round in a lot of drafts, especially PPR leagues. Just a few weeks ago, you could get him in the third round. In other words, if you want him you have to pay for him. You have to take chances to win; my rule of thumb, though, is don’t do it in the first round – take the sure thing, the highest ranked player when your turn comes. The time to gamble is the middle rounds. “Skippy Brown recently won the Draft King Spring Fling contest, besting over 1000 other professional fantasy baseball players. For comments, tips, advice, rants, or just to annoy him you can now contact the Skipper via email: skippybrown@yahoo.com
