SOLVING TWO OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST PROBLEMS I’ve always known – and every woman in the world knows – that the Women’s Rooms in Broadway theaters were designed by men. Who else would be so stupid as to think a Women’s Room should be designed to be the same size as a Men’s Room, even though it takes four times as long for a woman to complete her business as it takes a man, who is a zipper away from being out and done. The other night at the theater this really hit home. The sign on the wall said: NO ONE WILL BE SEATED AFTER 8 PM. THIS SHOW RUNS 1 HOUR AND 40 MINUTES WITH NO INTERMISSIONS. It was 7:50 PM. The Men’s Room, except for an occasional older man with a prostate the size of a Tom Brady-inflated football, was running like a well-oiled machine. Men went in, and within two minutes they were out and ready to enjoy the show. But their wives and girlfriends were trapped on a line that circled the length of the entire bottom floor of the theater. At least 35 women were waiting on the line outside

the Women’s Room, fidgeting and looking at their watches. The line was moving at a snail’s pace. Standing guard at the Men’s Room was a big, beefy, impassive man whose only job was to make sure no desperate woman rushed the line. How unfair. Where was Gloria Steinem? Where was Betty Friedan? Where was Erica Jong? These great women were so interested in pushing for equal rights for women that they forgot to push for unequal-sized bathrooms. A Women’s Room should be three times bigger than a Men’s Room. So how will women deal with this until these old Broadway theaters see the light and expand their Ladies’ Rooms? I have a solution. Don’t take this unfair treatment another day. If you’re on a never-ending line outside a Women’s Room at a Broadway theater and the intermission is almost over and that damn little bell summoning you to your seat is ringing in your ear, here’s what you have to do: PLAY THE “TRANNIE” CARD. Just walk over to the big lout who is standing between you and instant comfort and announce that you are a “trannie” and you have decided to use the Men’s Room. For old times’ sake. Do you think in this politically correct day he would have the nerve to question you? Never. If he has the nerve to even arch an eyebrow, ask him for his name, so that when you call this into The New York Post he will be correctly identified in a clever front-page headline. Don’t forget trannies are hot,

both in the media and among the new socially conscious, politically correct set. This is your chance to take advantage of this phenomenon. If the line is extra-long, get five or six women to join you and go up to the man as a group and announce that you are a Trannie Theater Group and you want him to clear the Men’s Room so that you can use it. Am I being unfair? Next time you are in a theater, go ask the 35 or 40 women who are hopping up and down outside the packed Ladies’ Room what “unfair” really is. *** THE SECOND PROBLEM, though not as serious as the Ladies’ Room imbroglio, is Donald Trump. He wants to be president. He’s going about it the wrong way. He is running against the 17 Republicans who also want to become president. Know this about Republicans: Once they decide on their favorite candidate, they do not take his losing the nomination with much grace. There are still Republicans swearing they will not vote again until Herman Cain is nominated. Do you think a person who believes that Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal or Lindsey Graham should be president would switch his or her vote to Donald Trump? Never. This is why Republicans will never win another presidency. They pick their candidate and sit on their hands on Election Day rather than vote for another Republican candidate. Democrat voters, on the other hand, are like Golden Retriever puppies. Show them a little love and they’ll lick your face and you will own them forever. In 2008, Democrat voters wanted Hillary, but they dropped her like a hot potato and switched their vote and gave the nomination to Obama because he smiled and promised them Hope and Change. Democrats’ loyalty is so zombielike that it includes putting their lives in danger just to show they’re faithful to their masters. Iran says “Death to Israel” and “Death to the America,” so a lot of Jewish Democrats I know are saying, “Well, maybe they don’t mean it.” Then they say, “Let’s back the Iran nuclear deal for Obama. He hasn’t been right in the Middle East yet, so let’s let Iran get the bomb so Obama can smile that cute smile of his again.” Want proof? Chuck Schumer may be going along with backing the deal that will give Iran the bomb. Chuck Schumer, of all people. He’s giving up his title of “King of the Jews” in order to be “King of the Senate.” And anyone with a brain knows

IN THE NEWS

we will never find out what Iran is up to with inspections. My God, only John Kerry is dumb enough to believe that. Democrats are being hustled into handing the bomb to the greatest exporter of terrorism in the Middle East. Proof that in the end, Democrats are the most loyal people on earth. Let it be known here that I haven’t used the word “stupid” even once. Now lately, just about all the Democrats I know – and I know so many Democrats – look sad whenever they mention Hillary’s name. Once again they’re ripe for a new fresh face going for the nomination. I say Donald Trump should a nno u n c e he i s se e k i n g t he Democratic nomination in 2016. In one minute he’ll go from facing 10 or 15 or 20 rivals for the nomination to facing just one, Hillary. Then watch the Democrat faithful jump on his bandwagon. Democrats are loyal to whoever wins the nomination. Trump the Bully will steamroll Hillary and win the nomination. All of a sudden Trump will go from being a front-page joke to being that “plain-speaking man of the people who has captured the hearts of a grateful nation.” The New York Times, in its wonderful way of spinning a story, will point out that he’s no hedge fund billionaire. Donald Trump made his money the hard way – he inherited it. Look for the puff piece in the Times that will compare Trump to Lyndon Johnson and Harry Truman. They’ll even say Trump is John Wayne with bad hair. They will note that even when he ran as a Republican he spent most of his time criticizing his fellow Republicans. Besides, Michael Bloomberg, a great mayor, was a Democrat who ran as a Republican. And that’s proof that if you can’t buy a political party, who can you buy? The 23 percent of the Republican vote that Trump currently has will cross party lines without blinking an eye. Add to that 100 percent of the Democrat voters who never cross party lines and only vote Democrat. This is proof that there is no shortage of empty-headed voters in either party. Donald Trump, Democrat, will roll into the presidency. He will go down in history as one of the great Democratic presidents in recent history. Right up there with Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter. I wish I were a Democrat. Life would be so much easier. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

Marijuana Dispensary Coming To Riverhead

By Rick Murphy

“Let’s go to New Amsterdam, Dude.” “I can’t.” “How about Colorado?” “I have no money, man.” “How about Riverhead?” “I’ll get my poncho, dude!” Here’s some news Cheech and Chong would love. A national company chosen to dispense medical marijuana will set up shop in Riverhead. Columbia Care LLC will run the site, one of only two on Long Island. There were 43 applications made, state officials said. Last week New York State chose five companies around the state. Columbia Care, like most of the others, already is in the business – it has dispensaries in five other locations around the country.

Three More Homes For TSHA By Emily Toy

Independent / Courtesy TSHA

The Southampton Town Housing Authority unveiled three new homes this week. Above, one of the Bailey Road abodes.

Three homes on Bailey Road in Southampton were completed as of yesterday morning, heralded with a house-viewing opportunity at a trio of locations on the street. Spearheaded by the Southampton Town Housing Authority, the projects involved more than 20 tradesmen, a local bank, a law firm, three construction companies, a county, a village and a town with countless hours of volunteer time to create the team that built the homes. “I am very proud of how our community has united for this common

cause,” said Curtis Highsmith Jr., Executive Director of the housing authority, in a press release from last week. “I am thankful to John David Rose who helped spearhead the collaboration of businesses and individuals who committed to the building of these homes and for their support of the Southampton Housing Authority.” The Bailey Road properties were seized by Suffolk County in 2001 for delinquent taxes and given to the Village of Southampton. The village then transferred the lots to the housing authority. The homes will remain designated as affordable housing in perpetuity. “The idea is that these properties stay affordable for first-time homeowners,” said Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley. “We must help keep the next generation of our young people and our families in the Village of Southampton.” Each home is two stories, and all are equipped with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Cedar shingles, white trim and a front porch round out the exterior aesthetic, with each home sitting on about a half an acre. The new potential homeowners are Bridgehampton National Bank employee Sharon Campuzano, of Southampton, Matthew Weeks, a school teacher from Hampton Bays, and Southampton Village resident Amani Wingfield, a dispatcher and first responder for the village of Southampton. To qualify, interested buyers completed an application and submitted proof of eligibility for a mortgage to be reviewed by the housing authority. Special consideration was given to military veterans, volunteer first-responders and residents who work or live in Southampton. Dozens of local businesses and organization donated services to make the building of the three homes a reality. Building supply costs were kept down by donations from Riverhead Building Supply, Water Mill Lumber, and Speonk Lumber. The Town of Southampton also put up $50,000 in grant money to further reduce the price for each applicant. Suffolk County National Bank structured construction loans to the housing authority, as well as mortgages for the homebuyers. The Law Offices of Twomey, Latham, Shea, Kelley, Dubin, & Quartararo LLP provided pro bono legal services for all three homeowners. Michelle Bonnie Cannon, Southampton Housing Authority Chairman, expressed great enthusiasm for the newly-constructed homes and the homeowners. “Thank you to all those who have contributed in the completion of these houses for Sharon, Matthew, and Amani,” she said. “I’m very happy to welcome them home.”

Hearings, They Got Hearings By Kitty Merrill

Just in time for the dog days of summer, the East Hampton Town Board will hold public hearings about a number of issues that have been dogging constituents for quite a while. Tomorrow night, bust out the No-doze, some patience and one of those blow up pillows if you’ve got a tender coccyx. A hearing slated for 6:30 PM, could bring out a variety of speakers. For several years now, Montauk residents have railed against activities at the Surf Lodge, complaining of noise, overcrowding, rowdy patrons and, perhaps most of all, an unsafe parking situation. On busy nights cars can be found parked on South Edgemere Street from the club all the way to the railroad station, their occupants often lurching into the road as they rush to take part in the revelry. Additionally, cabs queuing up at the entrance, often dickering with customers over price, create a hazard. Parking is already prohibited on the east side of Edgemere. When Surf Lodge burst on to the scene several years ago, homeowners on Industrial Road reported unruly visitors parking, and even peeing in their driveways. The town board banned parking on Industrial Road. The hearing tomorrow night focuses on a local law prohibiting parking on the west side of Edgemere as well, from just north of the Surf Lodge to the Edgemere/ Elwell Street intersection. The road belongs to Suffolk County and officials there have reportedly given East Hampton the green light to enact prohibitions. Fires, Booze, And Basements And while the clubs and the roads are a focal point of dissatisfaction with obstreperous visitors, the beach, too, has become a locale where discourtesy is evident and even painful. Last month a local child was injured on a beach when she walked across sand covering hot embers from a beach fire. Tomorrow night the board will solicit public input on the concept of requiring containers for all beach fires. Later this summer, board members may also call for a bill banning alcohol from Montauk beaches, similar to the prohibition at Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett. Later this month, the board will hold hearings designed to target additional quality of life concerns. Folks in Montauk have protested

the existence of summer share houses packed with people, while neighbors in Springs point to year round illegal rentals as a factor in high property taxes. Over the years reports from code enforcers have highlighted dangerous conditions in some of the overcrowded houses, including cots lines up in basements. On August 20, the town board will hear input on a proposal that,

if adopted, will reaffirm the town’s prohibition of bedrooms located in cellars. Also that night, and continuing the effort to quell the chaos in Montauk, the board will hear from the public regarding a measure designed to make restaurateurs and nightclub owners measure – the number of people they let in. If adopted, the law will mandate

that club owners use electronic counting devices to track customer volume. And, in an effort to handle the lines of potential patrons that can flow out of some clubs, crowding sidewalks and even spilling into the street, the measure includes a provision that deems a stationary line of people in front of a designated exit an illegal obstruction.

Having graduated from the universities of Idaho and Washington, when he is not writing, you’ll find him playing music in and around his home in Asheville, North Carolina. His latest novel Buoy 13 is now available at Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, and Kobo. Classic Boat Society Raffle After eight months of planning, planing, painting, sawing, sanding and shaping, the East End Classic Boat Society is ready to unveil its 2015 raffle prize boat Saturday.

Ray Hartjen, the group’s president, said the members’ handcrafted Pooduck Skiff will be on display at the Springs Fishermen’s Fair with raffle tickets for the craft selling for $5 each. He noted that in past years three of the winning tickets on the club’s raffle boats have been sold at the fair. This year’s prize, “a lovely sailing boat with beautiful lines, includes varnished mahogany seats, a glued lapstrake hull, and mahogany gunnels, Hartjen said. Equipped with a trailer, the 13 foot vessel comes with a lateen sailing rig and oars. It can be rowed, sculled with a single oar or equipped with an outboard motor. The swing centerboard skiff is similar in design, but larger than the Shellback dinghy, created by noted boat designer Joel White. For more information call 631-324-2490. The Fishermen’s Fair takes place on the grounds of Ashawagh Hall in Springs on Saturday, beginning at 9 AM.

Lieber To Visit Temple New York Times “Your Money” columnist and author of the best seller The Opposite of Spoiled, Ron Lieber, will visit Temple Adas Israel on Sunday at 5 PM to discuss how to raise kids who are grounded and smart about finances. Written in a warm, accessible voice, grounded in real-world

experience and stories from families with a range of incomes, The Opposite of Spoiled is both a practical guidebook and a values-based philosophy. The foundation of the book is a detailed blueprint for the best ways to handle the basics: the tooth fairy, allowance, chores, charity, saving, birthdays, holidays, cell phones, checking accounts, clothing, cars, part-time jobs, and college tuition. It identifies a set of traits and virtues that embody the opposite of spoiled, and shares how to embrace the topic of money to help parents raise kids who are more generous and less materialistic. But The Opposite of Spoiled is also a promise to our kids that we will make them better with money than we are. It is for all of the parents who know that honest conversations about money with their curious children can help them become more patient and prudent, but who don’t know how and when to start. The event is free and open to all. Parents, grandparents, educators, and youth workers will find it particularly relevant. The talk will be followed by a book signing and reception. Temple Adas Israel is located at Elizabeth Street and Atlantic Avenue in Sag Harbor. For further information visit the Temple’s website or call the office at 631-7250904.

Rental Registry: A Petition And Particulars By Kitty Merrill

As of midday Monday, over 300 supporters had signed a petition urging the East Hampton Town Board to enact a rental registry. A rental registry is one of the tools officials may use to stem the volume of illegal share houses, community members attending a town meeting in Montauk last month said repeatedly. Three weeks ago, Frank Riina started a petition on change.org, with the goal of

collecting 500 signatures. It states simply that the town needs to create a rental registry to prevent illegal housing, ensure tenant safety, and preserve water quality and the environment, the quality of life on the East End, real estate values, and “the single family residential character of our hamlets.” An update on the petition page includes a listing of other municipalities in Suffolk

that have registries – Babylon, Islip, Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southampton, and Greenport -with Southold in the process of establishing one and asks, “Why not East Hampton?” Hearings on prior iterations of rental registries elicited opposition from community members who deemed them invasions of privacy that will only punish law abiding property owners. Earlier this spring, residents of

Manor Lane in Springs expressed concern about a new single family house in their neighborhood that was slated to act as a dorm for exchange students. The draft registry may preclude such a use, thanks to a section that articulates the definition of a family as it pertains to living in a single family home. According to the proposal, a family may be defined as four or more persons living together as a traditional family or its functional equivalent. Four or more people who are not related by blood, marriage or legal custody living together in a single dwelling may be presumed to be cohabitating illegally unless they can prove they function as a family – using the whole house together, cooking and living as a unit, and sharing household expenses. Presumed Guilty? Such groups would have to prove they are permanent and stable, according to the draft law. Proof could include the presence of children who are enrolled in the local school, local employment, common ownership of furniture and appliances, and use of the same address for voter registration, drivers licenses, and tax filings. In the past, sections of proposed registries that relate to “presumptive evidence” – features present at a dwelling that lead inspectors to suspect illegal multifamily occupancy -- have been a focus of opponents and supporters alike. Two or more items on a lengthy list in the draft provide such evidence: multiple mailboxes, gas, or electric meters, more than one cable line, antenna, or satellite dish, three or more vehicles registered to the address, excess waste receptacles with pickups scheduled more than once a week, separate entrances for segregated parts of the dwelling, two or more kitchens, or bedrooms with locks on the doors. More than two mattresses in a bedroom could be evidence of over-occupancy as well. Violations of the registry law could result in fines that range from a minimum of $150 for the first offense to as much as $30,000 for a second or subsequent violation during an 18-month period. The court could alternately choose to impose a fine equal to no more than double the rent collected over the term of occupancy. Speaking of money, the draft doesn’t include how much it will Continued on Page 44.

Algae Blooms Reach East Hampton By Emily Toy

It’s spreading. Last week the New York State Department of Environmental

Conser vation reported large quantities of cyanobacteria (aka bluegreen algae) in local bodies of water stretching beyond Southampton Town and into Wainscott and

Montauk, according to a press release from Suffolk County officials. Cyanobacteria are microscopic organisms found in marine and fresh water environments. They are usually present in low numbers, but under favorable conditions of sunlight, temperature and nutrient concentrations, can form massive blooms that discolor the water and often result in scum and floating mats on the water’s surface, according to the DEC. Blue-green algae persist at Wainscott Pond, Lake Agawam in Southampton, Mill Pond in Water Mill, and Fort Pond in Montauk. In mid July, it was reported that Old Town Pond in Southampton, Kellis Pond in Bridgehampton and parts of Lake Ronkonkoma had exceeded NYSDEC bloom criteria. Presently though, those bodies of water are below bloom criteria levels. Still, health officials are asking residents not to use, swim or wade in the affected waters and to keep pets and children away from the area. “Extra precautions should be taken to avoid direct exposure to waters at Agawam Lake, as levels of cyanobacteria and associated toxins

in Agawam Lake are very high,” the release said. Cyanobacteria are naturally present in lakes and streams in low numbers; however they can become abundant, forming blooms in shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown or red. They may produce floating scums on the surface of the water, or may cause the water to take on a paint-like appearance. Contact with waters that appear scummy or discolored should be avoided. If contact does occur, rinse off with clean water immediately. Seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms occur after contact: nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; skin, eye, or throat irritation; or allergic reactions or breathing difficulties. To r e p o r t a s u s p e c t e d cyanobacteria bloom at a body of water that contains a Suffolk Countypermitted bathing beach, contact Suffolk County Department of Health Services’ Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760. To report a suspected bloom in a body of water that’s in Suffolk County, but doesn’t contain a county-permitted bathing beach, contact the Division of Water at the DEC, at 518-402-8179.

Something In The Air? By Emily Toy

Property and business owners in Southampton Town will have to install carbon monoxide detecting devices in ever y commercial building that has appliances, devices, or systems that may emit carbon monoxide or has an attached garage. As of July 27 New York State has adopted a rule that amends

the Uniform Code, thus requiring installation of the CO detectors. According to New York State Building Codes and Standards, there’s a “transition period” of ”existing” commercial buildings if a complete building application for the construction was filed on or before December 31, 2015. The transition period ends June 27, 2016, at which time all affected properties

must be in compliance. “As written in the code, during the transition period an existing business will be considered to be in violation unless the town is provided with a written statement certifying that there is a good faith attempt to comply as quickly as is practical,” according to a press release from the town. The code allows for the installation of a 10-year, sealed battery carbon monoxide detector as the source of detection. Electrical plug-in and standard battery type

devices do not meet requirements of this code and will not be accepted. All commercial buildings which have a building permit application filed as of January 1, 2016 must comply with this new law and compliance will be required in order to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy or Compliance. “As carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless gas, detecting devices are crucial in identifying its presence,” said Cheryl Kraft, Southampton Town’s Chief Fire Marshal.

They removed an individual later identified as James Peralta Sanchima, 17, in serious condition and called for a medevac helicopter to transport him to Stony Brook University Hospital. Police said Sanchima was headed south when he apparently lost control, striking several mailboxes in the process. He was ticketed for Reckless Driving and also for driving without a valid license. He was reportedly in stable condition Monday.

Senate Delegation To LIPA/PSEG: No!

Senator Ken LaValle, together with all Long Island State Senators, this week opposed the currently proposed PSEG-LI rate increase. In a strongly worded and wide ranging letter, the Senators expressed a myriad of concerns about the rate increase, debt load increase, and the lack of transparency in this first rate case since the LIPA Reform Act was implemented. While reinforcing that protecting ratepayers was the priority, the senators requested an immediate extension of the comment period and additional hearings to be held to address the issues. The lawmakers question whether the current structures and decisions are working in the best interests of homeowners, businesses, and local governments. “It’s critically important to keep

electric rates in check for Long Islanders. The current rate plan request from PSEG-LI is not in the best interests of our constituents. We request an immediate response to our many concerns, an extension of the comment period and further hearings by the LI-DPS to allow our issues to be considered and resolved,” said Senator LaValle. He continued, “This is the first time that rates are being ad-

dressed under the LIPA Reform Act and how this procedure is conducted will set the precedent for future rate proceedings. This process must be done with utmost transparency and deference to the ratepayers of Long Island.“ Earlier last month, local rep, Assemblyman Fred Thiele commented on the state comptroller’s review of the utility’s activities since the reform Act in 2013,

highlighting problems the public authority continues to have. Said Thiele, “The report confirms what ratepayers already know:(1) Rates continue to rise.(2) Debt continues to rise. (3) Oversight is lacking. (4)It is unclear whether service or reliability has improved. (5)Customer satisfaction is the lowest in the nation. (6)The customer satisfaction gap between it and other utilities continues to grow.”

RICK’S SPACE Into The Woods

Here in the Hamptons we have preserved thousands of acres of woodlands, areas kept in their natural state so that rare birds, exotic animals and disease-ridden ticks can propagate without the bothersome intrusion of human beings. This isn’t entirely true, though – being the land was purchased with public funds means the public can theoretically come and go as they please (unless the preserved land is adjacent to some rich fat cat’s property, of course). In fact, there are hundreds of hiking trails that meander all over the East End. Many homeowners bought houses bordering these preserves thinking they were buying solitude. No one told them about the trail behind their house. Then one night at dusk they saw a guy looking suspiciously like Davy Crockett replete with a raccoon hat staring into the pool house bathroom. No, these woodlands aren’t “virgin” in the sense that we know

the word – skinny girls with pigtails and braces. On some of these trails folks come parading through at all hours of the day and night. I have nothing against the trail walkers, mind you. Once last year Karen wanted to go on one. “This sounds interesting,” she said without a hint of cynicism. “Everyone is going to meet at midnight and walk down to the marshes under a full moon. Do you wanna go?” I answered without a trace of sarcasm. “Hey, who wouldn’t want to walk through a tick factory for two miles in the middle of the night when it’s 30 degrees out?” Instead I dropped her off at the trail, drove around the pond in my truck, and took a nap with the heater on until she showed up two hours later. She almost froze to death. That was the extent of our trail walking. My neighbor, whom I’ll call Ron (because that’s his name) first noticed these unwanted trail walkers after he moved in last summer. He

was sound asleep poolside when he heard rustling in the woods behind him. Sure enough a parade of freakazoids appeared. “Hark! I see a red bellied warbling warbler!” one screamed out. “Methinks I see a three-toed brown chested Eurasian Woodcock!” Yes, Ron was being invaded by a motley bunch of birdwatchers hell bent on looting, and, I assured him, anal rape. Here is a characteristic all birdwatchers share: 1) they all speak with an English accent, even though most of them come from Queens. 2) They are delusional. I say this with confidence, because I have lived here all my life, and like all locals I know for a fact there are only three species of birds-- sparrows, crows, and sea gulls. Everything else you see in the sky is a freaking bug, trust me. Nature lovers worry me, because they lurk in our woodlands, disturbing the natural order, and scaring away god’s creatures that call the dense woods home, like trail bikers. To me, a real nature lover should stay holed up at home watching instructional TV like “National Geographic,” “The Weather Channel” and Crocodile Dundee. Speaking of bugs, they are but one of the evils that lurk in the dense woods behind Ron’s hammock. There are also the assorted rashes like poison oak, poison ivy, poison

IN THE NEWS

sumac etc. Then there are the poison berries and mushrooms. Then of course, the roaches, raccoons, and bed bugs – oh wait, they are in Ron’s pool house. And of course, vampires and Wolf-Boys and all the other half humans Kristen Stewart cheats on. Last year several people claimed to have seen a puma in town. Now, I have several friends left over from the sixties who see strange things all the time – one swears he saw a giant spider with kaleidoscope eyes and whose brain was melting through his eye sockets, and tie-died intestines trailing out of his belly button. I just tell him he’s having a flashback, a bad trip. “No, man, it’s not a bad trip, I’m digging it,” he says. “Whatever rocks your boat, Moondog,” I say. It won’t be long before a bear is spotted in these parts, trust me. That’s when all the trail walkers and bird watchers will get what’s coming to them, because the bear will be ravenous after sitting on the bus for hours with only a tiny bag of pretzels. Davy Crockett “kilt him a bear when he was only three.” Maybe that guy with the raccoon hat Ron saw isn’t so crazy after all. Memo to trail walkers; next time you are on a midnight walk be afraid, be very afraid. And keep a crucifix handy, too.

Doctors, Lawyers, Fast Food Workers

New York State is passing legislation that will raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2021 (2018 in New York City). The raise is for only one group of laborers – fast food workers. Let’s put the debate about whether this will hurt or help the economy aside for the moment and focus on the fast food industry. Frankly, it is unskilled labor. There are no requirements that workers need to graduate from high school, or even attend. You don’t need any skills other than basic math. You should, of course, have a working knowledge of the English language, a dubious requirement in these parts to be sure. So why should a fast food worker earn $31,200 a year? According to statistics provided by the Department of Labor, freight and stock handlers earn $13.07 per hour on the average. Bus drivers make $14.53. Woodworking machine operators gross $13.74 per hour. Tailors make an average of $12.31 an hour. Consider that seven states pay teachers – yes, they have a Master’s Degree in many cases – the same amount or less. In Montana, a certified teacher’s starting pay is $27,274. Basic combat pay for a U.S. Army private is less than $20,000 per year. A sergeant with four years experience makes $30,000. That means the same guy who can’t get your order straight at Kentucky Fried Chicken earns more than a decorated combat veteran. Think about it. Governor Cuomo has championed the proposal, noting that the raise is necessary so workers can support their families. We understand how hard it is, and we appreciate every working person that strives to make a better life for their family. The question begs, though: are the families of fast food workers more important than farmers, or teaching assistants, or dry cleaning operators, or ambulance drivers? All those occupations pay less than $30,000 on the average. Fast Food chains are almost all franchises. That means they are run, not by giant corporations, but individual entrepreneurs. Consider an operation with 40 employees who currently make $9 an hour. The pay increase will cost the owner $10,000 a week and $500,000 a year when it is fully implemented. There are three things that can happen under that scenario: the place will go out of business and 40 people will be unemployed; prices will rise to make up for the increased cost of labor, which means a drumstick will go for about nine bucks, or the workers’ hours will be scaled back to avoid the added costs of health insurance benefits. The irony: fast food workers will have more disposable income than college graduates struggling to pay back student loans. Fast food workers, many with virtually no education or job skills, will be better off than working Americans who have learned a craft, soldiers who put their lives on the line, and even cops in some places. Only in America, folks.

Dear Mr. Murphy, Democrats in East Hampton are just

a wee bit jittery these days and I can understand why. Not even a year and a half into Larry Cantwell’s administration he and his town board members are dodging subpoenas from the Suffolk County DA resulting from their ill-advised purchase of the “555” property with taxpayer Community Preservation Fund (CPF) money.

By Ed Gifford Like a destructive relationship, Democrat politicians are drawn to the District Attorney when they get their hands on taxpayer money and the Community Preservation Fund. East Hampton taxpayers are still paying for the last CPF scandal. When the prior Democratic town supervisor looted the CPF, the other town board members sat idly by and let it happen. The 555 debacle is even worse as Councilwoman [Sylvia] Overby, the liaison and presumed watchdog to the

CPF appears to be participating fully in this questionable action. When Margaret Turner, an experienced and knowledgeable town board candidate wrote a letter questioning the actions of Mr. Cantwell and Ms. Overby, she was immediately attacked by a woman, using the most sophomoric and cringingly sexist descriptions; “claws out, spoiling for a catfight.” Really ladies, is this where 50 years of feminism has led us? Ms. Turner thankfully has said what so many of us believe. Another CPF scandal by yet another Democratic administration is embarrassing and shameful. If Ms. Turner’s letter tells us anything, it’s that she will not sit by, nor will she participate in, the looting of the CPF or any other taxpayer fund. Ms. Turner’s letter was a forceful statement of principle and integrity. Unaccustomed as you might be to those concepts in elected officials, ladies, that is what a real leader sounds like. To the East Hampton Independent, Hunting as a “sport”! What in the world is sporting about killing an animal for the sheer joy of ceasing its existence? Big and/or wild game hunting exemplified by our brave warrior, dentist Walter Palmer, killing Cecil the protected lion for the sole purpose of photographing himself with the slaughter and mounting the nebulous achievement on a wall or as a carpet, should be embarrassing to anyone with a semblance of self respect. How much less damaging it would be for this “sportsman” to have rather hunted out a Viagra prescription to feed his inadequacy? Less damaging to the ever-increasing and diminishing endangered species but nevertheless satisfying the need for some to show their superiority over animals, which are often denounced as having limited intelligence or as “dumb animals” is our local “sportsmen” and women. The feeble rational that, “I eat everything I kill” is just an excuse. The cost of firearm, ammo, license, gear, gas, trolls, etc. far outweighs what they could buy over the counter, the meat they can purchase to satisfy their stomach . . . but obviously not their gut. It seems that a blood lust, no different than our daring dentist is what they truly seek. “Watch me everyone. I have the power to needlessly take a life at will. Feel my muscle.” MARGARET VOGEL

Mr. Saridakis uses terms concerning Trump like Left/Right, Democrat/Republican etc. as if Trump was some sort of banner carrier for a specific cause. Get over it; Donald Trump is his own cause. He has been both Parties and would form his own third Party if it satisfied his ego. To his credit, he has managed to corral a considerable following of simplistic haters by spewing the base derogative they love to hear and love to hate. Obviously Mr. Saridakis is attuned to such rhetoric. Pity. ARLENE PHILOMENA

Carry On Dear Rick, Reader Zack Pall would do well to get his act together before he opines about anything. In this case we have him comparing Donald Trump to the late Morton Downey, Jr.---TV talk show provocateur from the 80’s. Fact #1: Hey Zack, it’s Morton DOWNEY, not Morton “DOWNING.” As to the “substance” of Pall’s letter: Does he really think that one can draw a

line straight from Downey to Trump? Is that all you got Zack? Trump may very well implode under the weight of what might prove to be a relatively weightless platform and more ill-advised opining, but what a significant portion of the Republican electorate “gets” about Trump is that un-filtered goes a long way when it comes to a candidate’s opinions on the issues of the day. What Mr. Pall and his ilk should do (after they get past spelling names correctly) is to tell us why such and so is wrong. In the meantime, carry on Donald! NICK SARIDAKIS

to life for the Palestinians under the Israeli occupation with that of the apartheid regime. I experienced this first hand when I spent time in Israel and the West Bank in 2013. I stayed with both Israeli and Palestinian families and met Israelis and Palestinians who were working together to find a way to promote peace and a two state solution. I personally suffered being tear gassed during a peaceful march through Hebron, which included many Israelis who had come in from Tel Aviv to participate. The plight of the Palestinians has been described as living in an open air prison and is well documented, which is why the European Union and now the US has been trying to dissuade the Israeli government from continuing to build more settlements - which are deemed illegal under international law - and are the greatest deterrent to a peaceful solution. Anti-Semitism has nothing to do with this goal, and to suggest it does, only fans the flames. I can enumerate a number of injustices I witnessed, such as the daily humiliations, harassments and intimidations inflicted on Palestinians by the IDF. Not to mention the separation wall, which is an ugly scar on the landscape and which needs to be experienced up close to appreciate its powerful significance. A large number of Israelis are extremely unhappy with the current administration, which isolates Israel from the international community. Green Olive Tours, founded by an Israeli - based in Jerusalem, works with Israeli and Palestinian volunteers on many projects, such as a woman’s scholarship fund in Nablus, a Palestinian/Israeli women’s empowerment program in Jericho and the development of a mixed Arab/Jewish music program in Jaffa, among many others. It might pay for residents in the 1st Congressional District to understand the unsavory aspects of Ms. Throne-Holst’s random interventions. To start, Ms. ThroneHolst has just proven she can indeed intercede on behalf of her constituents. So the question arises why she would argue otherwise when, for example, the Highway Superintendent damages properties owned by women. I believe two people would differ with Ms. Throne-Holst: Congressman Zeldin, a lawyer who understands the state’s obligation to protect its citizens and George Clooney’s wife, Amal Alamuddin, a human rights lawyer and Columbia law school professor who understands that government cannot trample on the rights of an individual. It will be interesting to see whether Mr. Clooney invests in a golf course in Southampton as is rumored. In the meantime, women in the 1st District should know that they will need a lawyer on retainer and enough personal funds to offset damages caused by Ms. Throne-Holst’s colleagues whenever Ms. Throne-Holst chooses not to do her job. it, but have chosen a knee jerk reaction. I’ve also spent time in Iran and was there just when the Bush administration made the ill-advised decision, based on faulty intelligence, to bomb Iraq. Iran is probably the most pro-American country in the region - despite the hyperbole from the mullahs - which appears to mirror that coming from certain members of Congress. Sixty-eight percent of this well educated population was born after the revolution and are anxious to move on and prosper. But incredibly some elected officials are calling for a military attack and to repeat the same mistake made only a few years ago. They know a lot more about us that we do about them. both. Both are more concerned about their legacies than the security of the world. Iran said it will place its nuclear development program on hold and allow inspection of its facilities, but Iran has had time to disperse and hide its nuclear facilities. Under the nuclear agreement Iran can deny access by inspectors to undeclared sites and then the inspection process goes before a number of committees for resolution, which can take close to a month. This is enough time for Iran to move the equipment and materials. The agreement will allow lifting of economic sanctions which will immediately release $150 billion and cumulative trillions in subsequent years. This money will allow Iran to purchase armaments, which will be used to continue the destabilization of Middle East countries and the ongoing sponsorship of Islamic terrorism in the world. Cutting The Ribbon

The Riverhead Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of its newest business member, Vital A Tea, on Friday, August 14, at 10:30 AM. Located at 49 East Main Street in historic downtown Riverhead, Vital A Tea is owned by Carolyn Poncato, a certified Holistic Ayurveda Health and Nutritional Coach. Ayurveda is a practice that reconnects your mind, body and spirit through the five senses. She incorporates these principles in her tea cafÊ by offering a variety of teas, juices, yoga and meditation. A variety of teas, each with their own healing properties, is available, hot or cold, to be ordered to go or to stay and enjoyed in a relaxing atmosphere. Pairings of tea with bakery items or with chocolate are on the menu as are loose teas sold by the pound. Juicing, or Farm-a-cology as Poncato refers to it, should be included in one’s holistic approach to common physical and mental ailments as well. She sources all of her ingredients for juicing locally as often as she can. The cafÊ has a private room in the rear for the practice of Kripalu Yoga led by Poncato. Meditation sessions are also offered during lunch hours Monday through Friday.

Confederate Flag Has No Place On Long Island By V. Elaine Gross

As an African American child growing up on Long Island, New York, I would have been terrified if a neighbor of mine flew a Confederate flag, a terror I picked up from my parents who grew up in North Carolina. Earlier this month, as an adult living on Long Island, I was reading and watching TV news about the Confederate flag coming down in

South Carolina when I heard about a Confederate flag that had been raised on Long Island at the home of a police officer. The Confederate flag is not just a hateful flag in South Carolina. It is also a hateful flag on Long Island in New York. It is often stated that the Confederate armies and navy fought to protect the “southern way of life,” a way of life that was deeply

rooted in and supported by the institution of slavery, sometimes euphemistically referred to as the “peculiar institution.” No doubt, many of the front-line soldiers were poor, landless and uneducated and their views on the purpose of the war may have varied. For the Confederate leaders and the plantation owners, however, there was no confusion about the purpose of the war. Their way of

life—financially, culturally and psychologically—depended upon the enslavement of human beings who were either purchased in Africa, or who were the descendants of enslaved Africans. They were slaves for life until they successfully escaped, were freed, or died. The institution of slavery was the ubiquitous reminder of the rule of white racial supremacy. This was the “southern way of life”, which the Confederate flag symbolized and for which Confederate soldiers committed treason against the United States. I n 19 4 8 , S e n a t o r S t r o m Thurmond of South Carolina incorporated the Confederate flag into his segregationist presidential campaign and, over the years, the flag became synonymous with resistance to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. To this day, the Confederate flag symbolizes the enslavement and dehumanization of millions of African-Americans and evokes feelings of terror for many African Americans, the descendants of slaves. For those Americans who value freedom and equality for all, regardless of racial or ethnic background, the Confederate flag represents racism and hate. As President/CEO of ERASE Racism, a civil rights organization, I respect the free exercise of speech as protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. However, I am concerned when the speaker is a police officer, who carries the responsibility to serve and protect all people, irrespective of race, and who frequently has the power over life and death while doing his or her job. It appears that this is not the first time this particular police officer has flown a flag of hate. A photograph posted as a comment on the Facebook page of a local online newspaper indicates that on at least one other occasion, a flag appearing to be a white Celtic cross on a black background, a symbol commonly used by Neo-Nazis, was displayed at his home. While many in the U.S. are reeling from the killings of unarmed black boys and men by police officers, this act is particularly disturbing. Unfortunately, this spectacle of hate is more likely to make people of color feel unsafe with and distrustful of police and, perhaps, wonder if there are other police officers on Long Island who share his views. Continued from page 32. I would hope that no one would long for institutional slavery or the legalized racial segregation of old. I would also hope that no one would support ongoing racial segregation, prejudicial actions and a host of structural impediments to fairness, inclusion and equal access to opportunity for all Americans. While I recognize that hate will not be eliminated by the removal of the Confederate flag, flying it is clearly a statement of hate that should repulse all Americans. If, (and hopefully when) she is elected to the East Hampton Town Board the people will see how competent and caring she truly is. It is my hope that the pettiness of Ms. Downs’ letter is not indicative of the tone that will be used by the Democrats in the coming election. RHODA BATION

A study published earlier this year in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry found that mercury levels in Pacific yellowfin tuna -— often sold as steaks and in canned “light” tuna -—have risen steadily since 1998. Previous studies have found that fish in rivers across the U.S. are tainted with medications and common household chemicals. And because mislabeling

Eleven smiling New York City children boarded buses last Thursday, headed for the East End, to reunite with their host families at the bus arrivals in Mattituck and Southampton. This summer, close to 4,000 children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. “I’m excited to go swimming and to watch the stars at night. I can’t see them at night in the city!” explained ten-yearold Tyrone about his Fresh Air experiences. Many volunteer families find their hosting experience so rewarding that over 65 percent of all children are invited back to stay with the same host families, year after year. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Independent Memories

When Filly Schmoozed Ruthie

By Linda Strome

My mother Ruthie and I had “a ritual” every Saturday afternoon when she would take the Kings Highway Bus to East 16th street, and then walk to my apartment on Avenue T. We’d chat for a while, and then I would treat her to lunch at a restaurant around the corner on Avenue U. However, since my boyfriend Filly moved in – “the ritual” suffered some minor setbacks when Ruthie, upon her arrival, would now immediately walk over to the closet, open it, and having a face-to-face confrontation with Filly’s leisure suit, would say, “So, you think this “John Travolta bum” is ever gonna marry you? What does HIS mother have to say about her son (i.e. 45 years old) moving in with you?” And then, the inevitable guilt trip, when she would look up to heaven, close her eyes and say, ”I can’t rest in peace until I see you safely married and taken care of.” My reply that “My NOT getting married was keeping her alive” wasn’t at all funny to her! This particular Saturday, we planned on having Ruthie stay on into the evening to meet Filly. I was somewhat apprehensive, and hoped that Filly’s humor would create an enjoyable atmosphere for the three of us. Filly arrives home and I introduce him to my mother. He is more than gracious; and Ruthie is taken by his good looks and personality! It’s when my mother does her “exploratory analysis” of Filly’s past, and I hear her question him on his military background, that the “Schmoozing of Ruthie“ begins . . . D Train passing through the Avenue U Station across the street . . . he starts . . . “ Wellll Ruth, (sigh) it was during the Battle of France; the German Luftwaffe was conducting their air strikes on Paris. I was an Army sergeant on leave at the time. One night, a bunch of us GI’s were in this cabaret, drinking and listening to this singer named Mimi. Ruth, (sigh) I’m tellin’ ya, them bombs were comin’ down hot and heavy!” (Another D Train roars by, and my mother is transfixed!) ”Then the roof begins to cave in, and everyone runs outside so as not to be crushed by falling debris. I look around, but I don’t

see Mimi. So even though I knew it was gonna be dangerous, (sigh, and intensified gaze into Ruthie’s eyes) I race back into the cabaret; and dodging the falling debris, grab a shell shocked Mimi, slung over my shoulder, the little trooper is still singing “How Much Do I Love Paris!” I carry her outside; saving her from what was gonna be (sigh) an excruciating death! “And there we all were, Ruth, scared Parisians, American

So Ruth, to calm Mimi’s nerves, I began singing to her. “Mimi, you funny little good for nothing Mimi Am I the guy Mimi, you sunny little honey of a Mimi

I’m aiming high Mimi, you’ve got me sad and dreamy If only you’d stop chomping on me Mimi” Filly’s comedic singing rendition of Chevalier’s “Mimi” was his final touch. My mother, who was so traumatized by the enormity of his schmooze, didn’t calculate that Filly was six years old in 1940 when the Luftwaffe struck Paris during WWII. With tears in her eyes, she said to him, “Your mother must be very proud of you.” The author (aka Mrs. Philip “Filly” Strome) lives in Manorville.

HCBL Championship: It’s Bucks Against Aviators By Rick Murphy

lumber out for the affair, pounding out 21 hits to record a 10-3 victory. Shelter Island scored three times in the second inning, with Ben Prada’s double the key hit, and added five more in the fourth to surge ahead 8-1. Prada plated another run with a single in the fourth, and Eddie Haus added a run-scoring double. Jack Machonis ripped a two run double and when Chris Hess singled him in, the Bucks suddenly found themselves up 8-1. By that point, Alicki had found his rhythm on the mound. After giving up a first-inning home run to the Mustangs’ Noah Shulman,

It was meant to be. It’s only fitting that the top two teams in the regular season would advance into the championship series. Last Wednesday Shelter Island, the regular season champion, eliminated a very tough, game Montauk team in the third and final game of their semifinal series. Westhampton knocked off the North Fork Ospreys in their semifinal battle that also went down to the final game. Shelter Island had its ace, Anthony Alicki, on the mound for the rubber game against Montauk, and the Bucks brought the big

Cody McPartland‘s gutsy pitching performance carried Westhampton to the HCBL Championship series.

Alicki kept Montauk scoreless over the next five. For the game, he went six strong, yielding five hits and three walks while striking out six. The stor y, though, was the offensive attack. Of the 21 hits, four came off the bat of Nico Cuccia, while R.J. Going and Ryan Sabo had three hits each. Every Buck starter but one had at least two hits on the night. For Montauk, Shulman went 2 for 4 with his homer, and J.J. Shimko ended his strong summer with a three-hit effort. Under manager Kevin Salmon, the fourth-seeded Mustangs set a team record for wins in the regular season with 22, but couldn’t overcome the top-seeded Bucks in their semifinal series. The Westhampton Aviators had been in this situation before. Back in the 2013 postseason, Westhampton lost the first game of their semifinal series to the North Fork Ospreys, only to win the second game on the road to force a decisive third game.

But in that series, Westhampton came out on the losing end, North Fork taking that game in extra innings to end the Aviators’ championship dreams. In 2015, the scenario was the same in the first two acts; North Fork took Game 1 on the road, while Westhampton took the second game at Cochran Park. In the rubber game it looked like North Fork was going to repeat history when they took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, but behind an incredible pitching performance from Cody McPartland in relief and timely hitting, Westhampton made sure history wouldn’t repeat itself. Westhampton rallied behind 15 hits, along with two runs in the fourth, a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to reach the HCBL Championship Series by a final score of 6-3. The Aviators won the c ha mp i o n shi p b ac k i n 2 011, ironically beating North Fork.

FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

THE INDEPENDENT • Traveler Watchman

You can wait even longer, until every other team drafts a QB and still get a Ryan Tannehill or Sam Bradford, who will put up a ton of yards for the Eagles if he stays healthy (If not, take Mark Sanchez, his backup). There are two scenarios when you should draft a QB earlier: one is

RTS

When To Draft Your Quarterback And Why Of course it’s different strokes for different folks, but most Fantasy Football experts agree the average player tends to take a quarterback way too early in the draft. There are a lot of good quarterbacks out there – at least 10, maybe more. Coincidentally, the average fantasy league has 10 or 12 teams, so there is a good QB for everyone – why waste an early pick? Naysayers will argue that a Top Tier quarterback is worth an early pick, even a first rounder. We strongly disagree – not only about when to draft the QB, but the number of Top Tier QBs. In the typical league that awards four points for every touchdown pass and a point for every 25 yards passing, here is a guide to QB drafting used by many experts – that is, guys that actually win their leagues. Most players think there are four Tier I quarterbacks: Andrew Luck, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees. We say there is one — Luck. Don’t draft him in the first round – never take a QB that early. If you pick late in the second round and you feel strongly about him, grab him. If he is available in the third round take him if you must, but chances are he’ll be long gone. Rodgers is almost always ranked up there with Luck, but we think there will be a regression in his fantasy numbers: he’s getting dinged up, he doesn’t run nearly as much, and the Packers run the ball a lot. If he is there in the fourth round grab him, but he’ll be gone. Manning is getting old and he’s been running out of gas in the second half of the season. Pass on him. Brees always puts up big fantasy numbers, and the Saints keep losing. This year they traded Tight End Jimmy Graham and committed to run the ball more. Tier III QBs should be available in the rounds six and seven. They include Big Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan, Russell Wilson, and Cam Newton. Wait . . . and wait . . . let them go off the board and pounce when three of them are gone. These are not consolation prizes by any stretch. Ben in particular is primed for a big year. The NFL landscape has changed: since rules were enacted protecting wide receivers from getting smashed

www.indyeastend.com

when they are in the air, the league has become pass crazy. It’s not just a few teams now – they all throw a lot. Tier IV guys should be there in rounds eighth and nine, after you’ve already fortified your running backs and wide receivers. Quality QBs like Joe Flacco, Matthew Stafford. Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Tom Brady and Tony Romo will all probably be there. Any one of them can win you a league title – I take Romo every year and he seldom disappoints me.

August 5, 2015

in leagues that award six points for TD passes. In that case, move up the above rankings by one full round. In leagues that start two QBs, disregard all of the above. We suggest taking quarterbacks with your first two picks, which will give you a significant statistical edge over any team that doesn’t.

Play Bridge A hand very similar to this one was played last week at the North Fork Country Club. Most EastWest teams won the contract and successfully made their 4 heart bid for a score of 420. One South, Sue S., decided to make a “sacrifice” bid of 5D. Sue knew she would be doubled but reasoned that she would go down two tricks at most, giving the opponents only 300 points. The defense took the first three

tricks, winning two hearts and one spade. They could see that Sue might be able to ruff spades in her hand and clubs in dummy. Thus they led a trump, which Sue won in her hand. Next she played her ace of clubs followed by a club ruff in dummy, a spade ruff in hand, a club ruff in dummy and another spade ruff in hand. Another club ruff in dummy followed by another spade ruff in hand allowed her to

draw trumps and cash the good jack of clubs. As a result of her fine play, Sue went down only one trick, giving the opponents a score of 100 points versus the 420 they would have made for making their heart game. She bid well and played well. Any questions or comments can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com. We are presently creating bridge lessons for the fall. If you know four or five dedicated people who would like to learn how to play the world’s most exciting and challenging card game, please call me at 631-766-6656 or email me at the above address.

cost landlords or, more likely, their tenants, to register a property. It notes, however, that should anything about the tenancy change during the course of a registered period, a new form and new fee will be required. Each registered property will be assigned a number, which must be used in any advertising. The application for a number will include the owner’s and tenant’s basic information – name, address, phone number – plus details about the property and its inhabitants. The number of rooms, the number of bedrooms and their square footage, the total number of occupants, the proposed rental period, as well as an acknowledgement that garbage will be removed in a timely fashion must all be disclosed. A provision providing for inspection by town officials (in this case the chief building inspector) rankled opponents to past rental registry proposals. It’s in this one, too. It calls for an affidavit from the property owner or a written certification from a licensed architect or licensed engineer stating the property complies with the provisions of the town code. The property owner could request an inspection by the town in lieu of the affidavit or written certification. Discussion of the draft legislation was expected to continue this week. A public hearing on any proposal must be held first before the law can be enacted.

Float Plans – Nothing But Upside

As we often pine to be afloat with a deck beneath our feet, we might even feel compelled to venture out with proper planning. If so, the Float Plan, oft spoken of and more often ignored, can be key for you and those closest to you. That’s what this column is about.

Float Plan The Float Plan is nominally known as a mechanism for ensuring that missing vessels are indeed missed in time for action to be taken that might lead to the rescue of the crew rather than the recovery of their bodies. “Boat-A is supposed to be at Payne’s Marina in the Great Salt Pond on Block Island at this time and date. Is it there?” In a nutshell, float plans are all about SOLAS - Safety Of Life At Sea. However, as the title infers, the development of a float plan delivers nothing but upside to the boat’s master and thus to the crew who are fully the master’s responsibility. Charting Plans The ideal float plan involves the detailed analysis of getting to your destination and returning safely. The float plan provides the opportunity for the skipper to sit with his or her charts, in the calm of a kitchen, den or study, and literally walk through the passage with parallel rulers and dividers. What is the goal of such detailed analysis? The net effect is to create your own pilot guide for the entire passage and to be able to assign predicted times to each leg. Deviation from predicted times is an early warning to the skipper that something is up – working against (or with!) a current, cross winds creating additional work effort for the engines to hold course, etc. All of this translates into fuel consumption “deltas” which ultimately leads directly to SOLAS issues. If you have made an error in the development of your pilot guide, the rest of the guide is likely to be suspect and you’ll have to do what every skipper has done for centuries untold – improvise carefully. If the chart is generally consistent but winds and tides have done the inevitable, then the overall pilot guide is likely to still have integrity but, once again, you’ll have to do what every skipper has done for centuries untold – improvise carefully. Weather And Tides With respect to predicting the weather, I use the Weather.com website because I can get weather

predictions by the hour. If the chance of precipitation for a particular day is 50 percent, but it is 10 percent in the morning and 90 percent in the afternoon, I want to know that. Put in your zip code or city name and click go. Click on “More Details” and see how the hourly details add to the weather analysis. Nothing is more likely to surprise you and be more potentially perilous than running aground. Understanding the tide is all about avoiding that. There are several good services to use but there is something very

subtle about tide analysis that no chart gives you. Tides change at different rates at different places. (Watch for a column here soon where we’ll talk Time and Tides.) Knowing the tides at an inlet while spending the next six hours transiting from cove to bay “on the inside” could require major mental gymnastics in order to keep pace with the pace of the tide as it works its way through that inlet and across the bays and into the coves. Why do that if the internet can do it for you?

Local Notice To Mariners As of April 1, 2004, the United States Coast Guard stopped mailing the Local Notice to Mariners. Instead, it is accessible on the Internet – and they will even email you a link to the updates each week as they “go to press.” The electronic versions of LNM appear on the U.S. Coast Guard

Navigation Center’s Website at www. navcen.uscg.gov. Why go out upon the briny deep with less information than there is available to you? What’s the upside in that? Go on their web site, click around until you find the area for you to put your email address in, and from then on get, direct from the United States Coast Guard forevermore, the latest they know about what is happening “out there.” It’s free! In summary, a complete float plan – left with someone responsible and capable of checking on you over the course of your passageway – encompasses all of these components . BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing.”
