THE GIANTS WON – WAS IT MANNING OR WAS IT SHLOMO? I’m sitting here still shaken up by the close call my New York Giants had on Sunday. Naturally I watched the Giants game with my best friend — my little dog Shlomo. Now those who know me know that when it comes to the Giants I’m the most superstitious person in the world. There was the time a few years ago during a Giants-Redskins game when I decided that if I took a sip of wine and a mouthful of peanuts before every play it would bring the Giants good luck. By the end of the game I had consumed two full bottles of wine and ingested enough peanuts to kill your average-sized elephant. I made it (on my hands and knees) to my bedroom. I lay there unable to lift myself up to the bed, smelling and looking like Mr. Peanut, the symbol
of Planters Peanuts. This week I watched the first half of the Giants game with Shlomo asleep at my feet. The Giants and quarterback Eli Manning were terrible. At halftime I decided to drown the Giants’ sorrows in a giant martini glass filled with Absolut Peppar vodka and plenty of jalapeno-stuffed olives (for their nutritional value). The second half started and Shlomo woke up and jumped onto my lap as I carefully balanced my martini so as not to drop my precious martini on his curly little head. Then something wonderful happened. The Giants woke up. Eli was brilliant. The Giants’ defense was holding. Then I started to think: What had changed from the dreadful first half of the game to now, when the Giants were coming

back to life? For one thing, I was holding a martini glass in my hand, and I had Shlomo sitting on my lap. That’s it, I thought. That’s it. Shlomo sitting on my lap is good luck for the Giants. Now my mind was racing. Of course, Shlomo wasn’t on my lap 10 days ago when the Giants lost like dogs to the hated Dallas Cowboys. So that’s the secret: Shlomo has to be stretched out on my lap when I watch the Giants play or they lose. Now those of you who are snickering at this clearly are not fans. A real fan will stay for hours in the same position they were in when their team scored a goal or a run. There are millions of cases of premature arthritis that were caused by sports fans sitting in a cramped position on a cold damp day at a stadium because they decided this position was lucky for their team and any other position was unlucky. I may be crazy – but I’m not alone. If you are a sports fan and you love your team I know you believe in the “ugga bugga” that your little finger being bent in a certain way or the position of your ass has some supernatural control over the outcome of a game. It also helps to have plenty of alcohol in you when you make this great discovery. and their dick coach Greg Schiano were retreating. That’s when both Shlomo and I got the feeling that we had to relieve ourselves. He squirmed. I squirmed. “Impossible!!!” I said aloud to Shlomo. “We cannot move off this chair. It will cause the Giants to lose.” Shlomo started to really squirm. I held him with one hand and held the martini in the other. “Good boy,” I said. “Hold on, Shlomo, there’s just eight minutes to go.” I was pretty uncomfortable, too, but I knew if we got off that chair all would be lost. So I kept hugging Shlomo with one hand. He looked at me and probably thought, “How did I wind up with this doggy pervert who won’t stop hugging me?” At one point I took a jalapeno out of a stuffed olive and tried to divert the pup’s attention by feeding him the olive, but he rejected it. Then, mercifully the game was over, with the Giants pulling off a dramatic win. “Lucky dog!” I shouted and raced for the john. As I stood there I was already planning for the Giants-Carolina game on Thursday. Maybe this time I will stuff an olive with Benadryl and feed it to Shlomo. That will put him to sleep on my lap. Then I asked myself: Will the good luck continue if Shlomo is sleeping? You never know how the 7/27/12 4:33 PM Good-Luck Gods will react. Will they let sleeping dogs lie? Stay tuned. Big Bigeye Bite Independent/Chase Darenberg
By Kitty Merrill
“Catching a bigeye is so rare, it’s better than an orgasm for a guy, believe me,” said Carl Darenberg, Jr. When he confessed he’d never had one himself, we’re pretty sure the long time marina owner
meant the fish. The last two weeks have seen a bite so thick, it was “unreal,” Darenberg reported. “It’s a kind of phenomena you’ll never see again.” Distinguished by black edged finlets and (what are the chances?) bigger eyes than other species of tuna, the bigeye tuna can grow up to five and a half feet long, weigh nearly 400 pounds and live almost a decade. According to the International Game Fish Association, the world record bigeye was caught in 1996 off the coast of Spain. It weighed 392 pounds, 6 ounces. Bigeye tuna tend to run in deeper water than bluefin or yellowfin tuna, who will occasionally swim at the surface of the water, particularly when it’s warm. They’re highly migrator y and often swim in schools. And it looks like they’ve decided to migrate to, and through, a popular offshore fishing site known as the Hudson Canyon. John Hart and his son Roger, aboard the Wrecking Crew docked at the Montauk Marine Basin, landed a pretty big bigeye last Thursday. It topped the scales at 248 pounds. The pair went out for a two-day trip, steaming to the site located about 100 miles south of Montauk Point. On Sunday, John Hart admitted his arms hurt from reeling in the big bigeye. But the pain was easy to discount, given the prize. While bigeyes are hard to find, and hard to catch, they’re “so easy to lose,” Hart informed. Getting a huge fish into the boat is a challenge. The Hart duo used a block and tackle to hoist their catch, but, Hart said he almost called a friend on another boat for extra manpower. There were so many vessels on the hunt at The Canyon, “It was mobbed out there,” he said. That wasn’t always the case in The Canyon, Rich Etzel, president
of Montauk Boatmen Inc. offered. He recalled fishing The Canyon as a kid in the 1970s. “You didn’t see anybody there.” Back then, he said, “Nobody knew what a bigeye was, we thought it was bluefin tuna.” By the late 70s, the rare breed became popular and the price climbed. According to Darenberg, bigeye is popular with restaurants because it’s not as large as other tuna,

making it less expensive to buy. When they sell a giant tuna, he said, all the value is in the belly. “But you have to buy a 500 plus pound fish to get to it.” The bigeye’s comparative smaller size makes it easier to access prime cuts, especially for sushi . . . But you have to get to the fish first. While the current big bite may be a bit unprecedented, getting there may be more than half the battle. A charter boat captain, Etzel pointed out The Canyon is “too far for most of us to get to.” Private boaters and local marinas are most likely to be benefitting from the bigeye bonanza. The Canyon can be home to

an array of different fish “if the weather is good and the fishing is good,” he said. Bigeye bite best at first and last light, so an overnight trip to The Canyon is probably prescribed. Hart said that, with federal fishing regulations changing so frequently, he’s in the habit of making a call right before he leaves the dock. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fishwatch website, ”The Atlantic bigeye is currently being harvested at sustainable levels.” So far no number or size restrictions have been enacted for the species, which is described as “near its targeted population level.” kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Fleming Defeats Maertz In Democratic Primary By Emily Toy
Southampton Town Councilwoman Bridget Fleming came out on top in the Democratic primary for the 1st District New York State Senate race last Thursday. The Noyac resident bested Rocky Point litigation lawyer Jennifer Maertz and will go head to head against 36-year incumbent Republican State Senator Ken LaValle in November. The 1st Senatorial District Fleming hopes to represent, covers the five East End towns and eastern Brookhaven Town. Unofficial results posted from the Suffolk County Board of Elections found Fleming earning 2031 votes in the primary, totaling nearly 80
percent of voters supporting her bid for the Democratic nomination. Maertz earned 531 votes last Thursday, representing 20.67 percent of the votes cast. Fleming said she was very pleased with the outcome and praised Maertz for her efforts, noting that she hopes to work with Maertz in the future on community issues. So far, the Sag Harbor matrimonial lawyer has been endorsed by nearly a dozen organizations including the Working Families Party, the Long Island Environmental Voters Forum, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Women’s Campaign Fund. “ With this groundswell of

support, it’s clear that Eastern Long Island agrees that our children deserve better,” the councilwoman said. “It’s an honor to have so many diverse groups support the campaign.” So far LaValle has been endorsed by the Sierra Club, the New York State Unified Teachers, and the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association of New York, to name a few. The state senator issued a statement on Friday addressing the results from the primary. “No matter who the opponent, I have always run on my record,” he said. “I am proud of my exceptionally strong record of economic development, job creation, and real

property tax relief, and proud of the support I have received in the form of endorsements thus far . . . I expect to receive and will announce many more endorsements in the coming days and weeks.” Maertz attributed her defeat to Fleming to very low voter turnouts throughout the state for the primary as well as insufficient funding in comparison with her opponent. Fleming reportedly drummed up nearly $58,000 during her campaign, while Maertz had about $3500. “I respect the fact that money does play a big role in politics and in this race . . .,” she said. “Unfortunately, I think it played a very big role.” A debate between LaValle and Fleming will be hosted by the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons on October 15 in Hampton Bays, and again on October 22 in East Hampton with locations yet to be announced. If elected, Fleming would become the first woman to serve as a Long Island state senator in nearly three decades and the first ever from Suffolk County. Emily@indyeastend.com

Forum Draws Few By Kitty Merrill
Wo r r i e d t h a t p r o v i d i n g personal information might prompt unpleasant action from the government, few immigrants have so far, taken advantage of the newly minted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration policy. The turnout last Friday night,
at a forum hosted by Congressman Tim Bishop and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services may be evidence of the fear. Offering an overview of the program, adopted last June and designed to offer relief from deportation to undocumented young people, Charles Akalski, USCIS field

office director, assured that unless the applicant poses a threat to national security or public safety, information will not be shared with their sister agency Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “I know that’s a very big concern,” he said. But USCIS relies on very specific criteria, when it comes to referring any applicant for enforcement. If he or she has not committed any crimes, doesn’t pose a threat to public safety or national security, or present fraudulent documents, no ICE

referral will be made. Applicants will not automatically be placed into removal proceedings, he emphasized, adding, “We know you’re illegal, but we’re not going to do anything about it.” Akalski described the application process to an audience of about two dozen in the community room of Bridgehampton National Bank’s flagship site in Bridgehampton. Following an introduction by Bishop, who left to attend another function, three attorneys who specialize in immigration law – Melinda Rubin, Mitchell Zwaik, and Frank Fountain, joined Akalski on the dais. Bishop reported that an earlier workshop in the district drew about 30 interested applicants and his office has assisted another 50 young people with the process. Akalski underscored that the department’s website offers a wealth of information for potential applicants, including the guidelines he presented. Applicants may be considered for the program if they are under 31, and came to the country before the age of 16. They must prove five years’ residence in the US prior to the June 15 adoption of the policy, and show they were physically here as of that date. Applicants must be currently in school, have a high school diploma or be a veteran of the Armed Forces or Coast Guard, and at least 15 years of age at the time of filing. Potential program enrollees must have a “fairly clean” criminal record, Akalski explained. A felony or “significant misdemeanor” conviction, or more than three misdemeanor convictions render the applicant ineligible. A significant misdemeanor is any offense of domestic violence, sex abuse, burglary, unlawful possession of a firearm, DWI or drug distribution. Basically, he said, “anyone can be considered,” even if the person is already in the midst of deportation proceedings. Forms are available on the USCIS website, but can’t be filed online. The attorneys spoke to more specified aspects of the program, with Fountain offering an extended story of a client who suffered a scam and has spent 17 years questing for documentation. The USCIS website offers assistance with finding reputable immigration attorneys. Zwaik said there is “little or no chance” the program will be used to deport people “even if there’s a new president in office next year.” There’s a firewall between US CIS and ICE that can only be breached under very limited circumstances, he said, adding, “If they breach that firewall, there would be a massive lawsuit against the government.” “And we don’t want that,” Akalski intoned. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

DA And PDs Fighting BWI And DWI
By Kitty Merrill
Knocking on a door to deliver the terrible news of a loved one killed by a drunk driver is the worst part of a job in law enforcement, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota. As a prosecutor, he spent many years consoling family members struggling to understand how a drunk driver took their family members. “Everyone here with me today knows what I’m talking about,” Spota said last Friday, speaking to an array of officers from myriad agencies. At a press conference hosted by Captain Joseph Vojvodich, sector commander at the Coast Guard Station in Shinnecock, Spota reflected on the success of a new initiative and reported its expansion. Last summer for the first time, the DA’s office created a multijurisdictional/ multi agency task force designed to address drunk driving on the East End. Most local police departments, plus the county police, park police, sheriff’s department, the state police and

DA’s office participated in saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints. The result? “Significantly far more arrests in the five East End towns,” Spota said.
In all, Spota reported 196 arrests over the summer. The busiest weekend was, surprisingly, not a holiday. On July 21 officers arrested 43 people, 32 for DWI, six for drug possession, five for unlicensed

driving. Some 66 traffic violations were issued. “Somebody once said ‘Success has many fathers and failure is an orphan.’ . . . We have a lot of proud fathers here behind me,” Spota enthused, referencing the cadre of police chiefs and officers arrayed around him. The DA said he was “deeply gratified” for the willingness of the varied PD officials to participate in the new task force; it proves the countywide commitment to quashing drunk driving. With the success on land under their belts, task force members are now turning their eyes to the sea. Spota announced plans to “be more aggressive” with boating while intoxicated enforcement, using the same strategies from the task force to craft a collaborative effort. He noted that this year already, the increased focus on preventing alcoholic operation resulted in 15 BWI arrests as of the end of August. That’s more than the combined total of the previous three years. The task force is funded through the DA’s asset forfeiture program, and the county’s STOP DWI program, which garners operational cash through federal and state grants. “This won’t cost the taxpayers a nickel,“ Spota said. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

‘Disaster’ Equals Dough? By Kitty Merrill
The U.S. Department of Commerce last Thursday declared a federal groundfish fishery disaster for New York’s fishing communities. The move allows Congress to appropriate funding to ease the hardships faced by New York’s fishermen. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Tim Bishop requested emergency relief after a recent preliminary report projected significant cuts — up to 70 percent — in catch limits for New England groundfish stocks in 2013. These cuts to multispecies fishery, such as cod and yellowtail flounder, would harm Long Island’s businesses and fishermen, who are already struggling and being squeezed by catch limits and tighter regulations. Last month Schumer, Gillibrand and Bishop wrote to Acting Secretary Rebecca Blank expressing “strong support” for the declaration, adding that New York’s inclusion in any

disaster declaration was vitally important. The lawmakers pushed to include New York in a federal fishery disaster declaration, noting that New York’s fishing interests in New England stocks are often ignored due to its underrepresentation on the New England Fisher y Management Council. Many of New York’s fish stocks are regulated by this council, which will weigh in later this year on catch limits for 2013. “Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Cong. Bishop have fought to keep New York’s groundfishermen viable in this disaster declaration process, and have not allowed our lack of fishery council representation to silence the needs of our fishing c o m m u n i t i e s ,” s a i d B o n n i e Brady, Executive Director of the Long Island Commercial Fishing Association. “We are grateful for their voices as the bridge to disaster relief for all ground fishermen.” B:37” T:36”

Riverhead High School A student in the high school’s New Junior Reser ves Officers Training Course has earned a prestigious scholarship. Cadet Harold Hubbard has been selected for the Navy ISR Scholarship. The $180,000 scholarship to the college of the student’s choice was presented by Commander John Skarin. ISR stands for “Immediate

“This is a big day for Riverhead because it’s the second year in a row a Riverhead student has earned one. Your job now is to get into the college of your choice,” Commander John Skarin told Cadet Hubbard.” Superintendent Nancy Carney thanked Lt/Col Peter McCarthy and the NJROTC for all they do in the Riverhead community. “We’re very proud of the program and its service to the community,” she said. “You make us look good.” “We get great support from the district and we really appreciate it,” Lt/Col McCarthy replied. “NJROTC students come out with more discipline and maturity and are prepared for college or careers,” RHS Principal David Wicks added. Over the summer, Cadet Hubbard attended the General Tommy Franks Four Star Leadership Academy for a week in Oklahoma City, OK. Students selected are fully funded by the Academy. Only 50 students nationwide are selected. They must submit a creative video as part of their application. Hubbard also attended a week-long Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) seminar at Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach Florida, which was fully funded by the Navy. RICK’S SPACE Tattoo You (Not Me) I have a tattoo. I got it in Tijuana. I also married some Mexican floozy but I don’t remember her name. OK, I’m lying. I actually got my tattoo when I was in the Navy. The other day there was a picture of that perv in New York who raped the 73-year-old woman in Central Park. He had tattoos all over him. This is a trend I’ve noticed – people have tattoos, dozens of them, all over their bodies, including their faces and necks. Convicts are all inevitably covered with tattoos. Homeless people have tattoos. Tattoos can cost anywhere from $65 to upwards of $300 or more depending on the complexity. How can these people afford tattoos? If I were homeless and I grubbed up a few bucks I’d spend it on something that was good for me, like cigarettes or a bottle of hooch.

The last thing I would do is go to a biker dude with huge muscles, long greasy hair, a graying beard, and a permanent scowl on his face and say, “Please take that hot, filthy needle you have and carve something really ugly on my chest.” I’m lying about being in the Navy, too. The truth is I’ve spent some times on boats, but sailing never agreed with me. Usually I get sick to my stomach. I couldn’t figure out why every time I went sailing I would throw up. Finally I asked one of my friends who owns a boat why that was. “You get seasick,” he informed me. Big duh. I’ve been fore and aft, port and starboard. I’ve been aloft and below, I’ve close-hauled, been hard-a-lee, and I’ve come about more than I care to admit. I know a clew from a cleat, and being that I get seasick

I’m well acquainted with a headstay, and I’m not jibing you. I’ve always enjoyed a good lashing, but I digress. It used to be only tough guys in the Marines or the Navy had tattoos. During World War II guys would come home from the war with them. They would have cute themes, like “Anchors Away” or “I Love Mom.” According to The Histor y Of Tattooing – yes, there is such a book -“After World War II, tattoos became denigrated by their associations with Marlon Brando type bikers and juvenile delinquents. Tattooing had little respect in American culture.” Nevertheless, the fad started up again, and is more popular now than any time in history. A lot of people have Chinese symbols, especially women. You’ll see them on the ankle, on their shoulders, and god knows what other places. When you ask them what the symbols mean they say stuff like, “Eternal Life Is In My Stars” or “The Sun Shines On Me.” To hear them tell it, every Chinese symbol sounds like something out of a fortune cookie. What they don’t know is the tattoo “artist” doesn’t have any idea what the symbol means. That’s why when some yuppie girls go to Chinatown all the people laugh at her – because the symbol on her neck really means, “There is poopie in my armpit.” NBA basketball players are positively reptilian these days. Their bodies are covered with tattoos,

invariably ugly. But the craze has spread to mainstream America. Sixty years ago the most p o p u l a r tattoos were skull and crossbones, lucky seven (dice), crosses, butterflies, and lions. Nowadays it’s gang logos, Kanji (Chinese characters), and the name of the first person you ever made love to. Those, by the way, are the most frequently removed tattoos. My first tattoo said “Playmate of The Month, June 1964.” I loved that woman but she acted like she didn’t even know I existed – that’s women for ya. So I had it removed. (Now it says “Left Hand” but let’s not go there.) Consider J.R. Smith of the New York Knicks. His entire back is tattooed with some bizarre street scene with “Just Klownin” written across the shoulder blades. The problem is that, until the beat writers asked, he apparently thought “clowning” was spelled “klownin.” Don’t ask what college he went to. The award for worst tattoo in the NBA, though, goes to Chris Anderson (see picture). What’s really weird is, despite having it written across his neck, his nickname is not “Bird.” Go figure.

The Attack On Our Embassies Yemen, Egypt and Libya all have two things in common: they all have new governments, and they all received financial and military support from the United States, either directly or indirectly. Yet our embassies in all three countries were attacked last week. The current U.S. leadership has been effusive in its desire to aid militants seeking to overthrow dictatorial governments, but has been myopic when considering the long-term repercussions. Several astute foreign affair specialists warned President Obama that in Egypt, the Mubarak regime, however oppressive, might at the very least have been the devil we know. The fear was the militants who end up running the country might well be radical Muslims more in tune with the terror tactics of al-Qaeda than their predecessors. At least Mubarak understood that in return for U.S. foreign aide his grudging support of Israel was expected. In Libya, Gaddafi, for all his faults, understood the value of working with the United States. Again, Obama supported the uprising that led to the very public murder of the dictator by a bunch of savages. The same people control the fate of that country now, and the way U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was brutally murdered is indicative of the anti-U.S. sentiment there. The U.S. backed Yemen government at least condemned the attack on our embassy there, though the anti U.S. -- and anti Israeli – sentiment is palpable. It was bad enough Washington’s first response in the hours after Stevens was killed
Independent VOICES
Stimulating Stimulus Dear Editor, Randy Altschuler doesn’t have his facts right. The deficits accrued because of Republican policies: quadrupled under Reagan; doubled under Bush because of his huge tax cuts and money borrowed to fight the misguided Iraq war. Under Clinton after tax increases we had 4 years of budget surpluses that spawned the greatest expansion of our economy since the end of World War II. The “Obama deficits” started with the Bush bailout of the banks continued by Obama and expanded to include and save the big 3 automakers along with 1 million jobs spread through our economy as a
result and a stimulus package that has resulted in the creation of over 4 million jobs since Obama took office. Without Obama’s deficits the United States and the world would have slipped into the 2nd Great Depression. Loose talk is just that. There is no proof that tax cuts for people earning more than $250,000 per year create jobs. Because of the great recession caused by the flagrant and irresponsible business practices of mortgage lenders (the banks) people and businesses aren’t spending money. Keynesian economics proves that when this happens the government must step in to hire teachers, policeman and fireman and fund projects to rebuild our infrastructure including our highways and bridges all of which create jobs. The Republican Congress voted against Obama’s most recent proposals for stimulus that would have added another one million jobs and yet they blame him

was apologetic, but it’s worse that at a time when this country’s financial condition is beyond critical we continue to funnel money to these radical governments whose people hate us. By the way, the attack occurred on September 11 – obviously signaling these were planned. We don’t pretend to have insight into national affairs from our perch on the East End. But it doesn’t take an expert to see our friendship with and support of Israel now, more than ever is essential to our survival. Frankly, there has been nothing coming from the Obama administration that indicates Washington understands our staunchest alley is positioned where we can launch a quick response should one of these rogue governments decide to get brave. It is crucial we bond with the Israeli government, not alienate it. We remember when the Shah of Iran was overthrown; folks there hoped it would signal a new era of prosperity. Now look at that country. The jury is out on Iraq and Afghanistan. Sure, leaders in both countries appear to support our interests, but that may be because we have troops on the ground. Once we vacate, it would be no surprise if radicals seize those governments as well down the road. “Change” isn’t necessarily a good thing, especially when we have to pay for it. Sometimes status quo is better than the unknown. Before this country throws guns and money at every would be Che Guevara out there it might be a good idea to find out if he intends to use them on us. for lack of job growth. Mr. Altschuler would join his Republican colleagues in preventing such stimulus. His boast of a 10 point plan to increase jobs on Long Island is poppycock. He doesn’t know what he is talking about. Mr. Altschuler would also vote for Congressman Ryan’s plan to put Medicare on a voucher system. An experiment with “Medicare Advantage” in Florida has already proved to be more expensive. Mr. Altschuler would cause Medicare beneficiaries to have to pay a substantial portion of their own medical care, which in most cases would be devastating. Mr. Altschuler also joins Mr. Ryan and Mr. Romney in a promise to repeal Obamacare so that people with prior existing conditions and those who lost or changed their jobs would not get coverage. Those with catastrophic illnesses would lose their homes and likewise those middle-class people who need nursing
home care would also lose their homes. Mr. Editor, instead of focusing on the undocumented brouhaha that Mr. Bishop wrongly accepted a donation from a person whom he helped get a fireworks permit you should be warning your readers about the catastrophe that would occur if Mr. Altschuler and the other Republican representatives have their way. Succinctly stated, a grateful constituent offered to make a contribution after the Bishop congressional office took action on his behalf, which they did unconditionally. The readers of The Independent deserve better than what you gave them and I trust you will print this letter so that they hear another point of view. DAVID J. WEINSTEIN Editor’s Note: Readers of The Independent deserve and get the facts. Any newspaper that ignores unflattering news about a politician it favors does the CONTINUED ON PAGE 20.

entire populace a disservice. Tim Bishop stands accused by two respected nonpartisan watchdog groups of soliciting a contribution in return for a favor. He has refused to fully vet what happened, has dodged the press, and has tried to convince voters that Altschuler made the charges. He needs to call on the Congressional Ethics Board to investigate and clear his name. Our position is the same as Newsday, The Daily News, The Post, and dozens of other newspapers. The fact a constituent made a contribution isn’t the issue: the issue is the constituent asked for a favor, and Bishop’s daughter requested a contribution of up to $10,000 two days later, before the Congressman took any action. The constituent sent money only after Bishop delivered. Moreover, Bishop said the constituent first broached the matter of making a contribution; the constituent was adamant that it was Bishop’s camp that made the initial overture. Incidentally, in the interest of accuracy, Obama hasn’t created any new jobs since he took office. He claims to have “created” four million new jobs “in the last 27 months.” He neglects to mention the four million jobs lost during his first two years in office. You can check for yourself with the Department of Labor. Those jobs came at a cost to the public of at least $228,000 per job, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Seriously Serious Dear Editor, Many conservatives including this writer are amazed at the disappointment, despair and hopelessness privately expressed by liberal friends amongst themselves and to us; as well as wellknown pundits too, who have made their sentiments public. As Democrats have risen for Ronald Reagan in 1979, many Democrats will have voted against Mitt Romney until Election Day when they will choose to vote for him. Their vote will be the evidence that will have realized that the games are over. When the ideology hits the pocketbook, one’s security and one’s children’s future prospects, it is the ideology that may go last, but it will go. The Obama Revolution was real. It was based on ideology, where the idea comes first and the story then is weaved around the idea to fit the ideology. But not all ideologies work, and not all ideas work.

JUST ASKING
IN THE NEWS
By Karen Fredericks
On this, the Jewish New Year, what message would you like to send to the world? Michael Shulman Peace is the real message. Peace is the only message. We need to end the violence. We need to end the violence all over the world.
Susan Cannon I wish for world peace and for everyone to stop fighting with each other. We need to be more tolerant. If we could each be more tolerant then it would bounce off other people and the tolerance would grow. Monica Shulman I wish for a more peaceful world. I wish for a more tolerant world. I wish for a less violent world. I want my babies to be safe. I wish for a world in which all children could grow up safely.
Sheryl and Richard Kamen Sheryl: I’m afraid I’ll sound boring or trite but what I really wish for is world peace. I wish the people in our world could learn to get along. I wish for a more harmonious world than the one we live in. Richard: There’s nothing more important anyone could wish for. I have a revolutionary idea for Gallup, CNN, ABC, Zogby, the WSJ and Rasmussen: The only polls that matter are the ones on Election Day. I hope Election Day will turn into Independence Day when Americans will wipe the daze and false hope out of their mesmerized, glassy eyes, and conclude the logical: that a former community organizer with absolutely no business, management, administrative and economic experience, is not nearly qualified to run the world’s largest economy, our nation’s enormous budget, the world’s most powerful military and intelligence agencies, and also manage America’s health care, banking system and our automotive industry out of the White House. To think otherwise is to think the impossible and the irrational. What do you think? I hope not the irrational. You see, we have a deficit. A serous deficit. A serious deficit of seriousness. Set ideology aside and look at the results. In other words I hope for change where the voter will recognize that it’s time to get serious if they want a future, and understand that no matter how much one may like the man Obama, and most of us do because he seems earnest and likeable indeed, our like and our hopes will not turn the huge ocean liner we know as “America”
around. Barack Obama has proved that his management of the nation’s affairs is hopelessly mired in politics and selfdealing and it is foundering; that those most in need are those who will be hurt the most if Obama continued his current path - as he will because he said he is not yet finished. He said that he will “fix” things. Just a reminder, the Democrats have been in power for seven years and Tim Bishop, Obama and his crew continued to fix things, didn’t they? I think seven years is three too many. If it is a difficult situation for many in America today, it is far the worse for the poor and the lower middle class. Ironically, those who feel the pain the most are the most likely to vote for Obama again. For what? The pain and poverty you’re feeling now is not enough? The problem is not just Obama, the man, but his advisors too, most of whom are out of their element and operate beyond their expertise. They can’t think outside the box because they haven’t even identified what is inside the box. Most of these cabinet members and czars are not from the business world, but from academe. The results of Obama’s choices are demonstrated every day. And CONTINUED ON PAGE 21.

the wisdom, too, might be reconsidered: ...that those who can, do; ...and those who can’t, teach. Winston Churchill: No matter how beautiful the strategy, we should occasionally look at the results. The nation’s welfare is at stake and this is no longer a game. ANDREW BENJAMIN
Our Plovers Dear Editor, Randy Altschuler is running a campaign of Less. Less taxes. Less spending. Less regulations. Yet all we see is his nine point plan about business. Although one has to admit he loses credibility since he has 40 locations in the US and abroad but not one in Suffolk County. What about the environment? Out here in the East End we depend on our environment, especially our waters, as our number one economic engine. One of our biggest issues is where to draw the line between individual rights of homeowners and property developers and issues like preserving water quality. Please tell us your views as your silence has been deafening. And by the way, if you do, look this editor in the eye and tell us how one of the first things you will vote to cut is funding and regulations for things like our piping plovers. MIKE AXELRAD
Plover Support? Dear Mr. Murphy, If I understand Michael Axelrad’s letter to the editor (“Who Is At Fault,” 8/29/12), he believes if Republican Randy Altschuler is elected, Mr. Altschuler will cease to protect piping plovers. However if Democrat Tim Bishop is elected he will continue to protect piping plovers, except on those occasions when he blows them up with fireworks. Value judgments aside, if one supports piping plovers, one is out of luck. As I’ve already noted, cronyism permeates Southampton politics, a subject that allows me to pick up from my last letter in which I began to describe Southampton’s flawed approach to the economy. If anyone should understand my argument, it Would be Mr. Altschuler. SUSAN CERWINSKI

Curtail Our Rights? To The Editor, Mr. Feldman’s analysis of my letter to Mr. Delgado is so inaccurate and rambling that I won’t bother responding to his letter. But he does voice his concern for the First Amendment (he rues the fact that the Supreme Court agreed with my position and not his), so I wonder what he thinks of our feckless President apologizing to Muslim fanatics because we have a First Amendment right to make fun of anyone we please, and they don’t. They certainly seem to have the right to say whatever they want about us, but according to Mr. Obama and his hapless State Dept., we must curtail our rights so as not to offend a mob of thugs and terrorists. So will Mr. Feldman beseech the President and his minions to express similar outrage the next time Christians or Jews are mocked by Bill Maher and Jon Stewart, or their houses of worship are

attacked by these same sensitive fanatics? Does our 1st Amendment guarantee of free speech apply only when the targets of that speech are groups which we know won’t try to kill us? Should we not have made those cartoons and films mocking Hitler because they might make his behavior worse? Or is Free Speech an absolute right? Just wondering. REG CORNELIA
Peta Plea Dear Editor, As someone who deals with dozens of cruelty to animals cases each week, I’m glad to hear that the man who was caught on videotape viciously kicking and pummeling a small dog inside an elevator in East Harlem has been arrested and charged. The perpetrator’s reported lengthy criminal record, including arrests for assault, is not surprising. Mental-health

and law-enforcement experts know that the bullies and cowards who abuse animals will often cross species lines. The American Psychiatric Association identifies cruelty to animals as one of the diagnostic criteria for conduct disorders, and the FBI uses reports of animal abuse in analyzing the threat potential of suspected and known criminals. The link between cruelty to animals and interpersonal violence is undeniable. If you know or suspect that someone is harming animals, please report it to authorities immediately—for the entire community’s safety. To learn more, visit www.PETA.org. MARTIN MERSEREAU

Suffolk County K-9 units were out in Montauk last Wednesday for what East Hampton Town Police said was a “routine” search. George Richardson of Dix Hills was staying at a Hartman’s Briney Breezes Motel on Old Montauk Highway when he disappeared on August 28. The dogs were searching the bramble and beach across the street. At least one witness said they saw a man on a boogie board in the water on August 28th, and police now say a red body board owned by the Richardson family is missing. “The ocean must be considered,” said Detective Sgt. Rob Gurney. “He was known to swim and he was swimming with his children” during the family vacation in Montauk.
It’s a mountain lion! It’s a jaguar! It’s a puma! Actually, it’s cardboard. A prankster planted these clever fakes around East Hampton Town after rumors that a real “Big Cat” was sighted. Above, the cat flees East Hampton Town Hall, probably escaping boredom. Below, A cadre of cardboard kitties frolic in a Springs yard.

Insurance Company Merger
Cook, Hall & Hyde, an insurance firm (with offices in East Hampton, Melville and Fairlawn, NJ) and Maran Corporate Risk Associates (Southampton, NY and Voorhees, NJ) this week announced their intention to enter into a strategic merger agreement. The new company, Cook Maran & Associates, is being formed to provide an increased level of market opportunities for agents and an enhanced portfolio of products, services and support for both organizations’ base of commercial and private customers. It is anticipated that the merger will be completed within 60 days of the agreement signing and have a significant impact on the way in which risk management solutions are delivered within the New York tri-state region. “Together, the resources of our combined organizations will enable us to provide clients with more of what they choose an insurance brokerage for — more products and services, more points of access and more leverage with leading carriers,” said Len Scioscia, President of Cook, Hall & Hyde. Scioscia has been named Chief Executive Officer of the new

“This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased.” “The Ghost of Christmas Present” referred to the allegorical children huddled under his robe, in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” The poignant image and social message came to mind upon seeing these unfortunate dogs, literally clinging to one another. They were abandoned at a boarding facility nine months ago. Two Pomeranians and one beagle, all females, about two years young, very small, only 10 to 15 pounds, desperately in need of personal care with an experienced pet owner. Visit www.rsvpinc.org , call

Heartbreaking Losses For Locals
By Rick Murphy
For the most part it was a weekend of heartbreaking losses for the local teams, none more so than East Hampton. Bonac, playing at Stony Brook Friday, came tantalizingly close to ending its two-year losing streak only to have victory snatched away in the waning moments of the game. The locals stunned the Bears early, when Cortland Heneveld connected on a 75-yard bomb to Thomas Nelson, and clung to a 14-6 lead in the fourth quarter courtesy of a three-yard run by Peter Vaziri. The Bears pulled out the old halfback option, with Don Liotine connecting with Tyler Hoegsberg on a 75-yard score. The two-point conversion – Liotine carried it in -- knotted the score. With two minutes remaining Bonac went for the win. Alas, an errant Heneveld pass was intercepted
IN THE NEWS
by Austin Hulse, who took it to the house with an 80-yard return, giving the home team a hard fought 20-14 victory. Liotine ran for 118 yards on 12 carries in addition to his touchdown toss. East Hampton and Southampton renew what used to be a storied and spirited rivalry Saturday in East Hampton at 7 PM. It’s Homecoming for Bonac, and what a perfect time indeed to get off the schneid. Most pundits tabbed Riverhead as the team to beat in Division II and with good reason – The Blue Wave has a spectacular air attack, a punishing ground game, and an experienced defense. The Wave figured to handle West Islip easily on Saturday, but the underdog home team had its own idea. The two teams were locked in a defensive struggle with the clock winding down. The Lions forced
Riverhead to punt with 30 seconds left, and that’s when things got interesting. James Murphy blocked the punt, and with four seconds left Zach Hagerman trotted onto the field to attempt something he’d never done before – kick a field goal, and damned if he didn’t, from 40 yards, sending the dejected locals home with their first loss. Dan Johnson had 143 rushing yard and a TD for Riverhead, and Ryan “Air” Blitzer hit Quinn Funn for a 27-yard score, but four turnovers and two missed field goal attempts doomed The Wave. Riverhead travels to North Babylon Saturday for a 2 PM tiff. Hampton Bays is for real. A week after upsetting Glenn the Baymen annihilated Mattituck/Greenport et al on the loser’s field 50-14. Once again Hampton Bays unleashed an unstoppable running attack and the savvy quarterback
Justin Carbone knew when to take it to the air -- he completed 4 of his 5 attempts for 95 yards, 1 TDs and a score – a 62-yard bomb to Taylor Catz. Trey Kennedy led the rushing attack with 13 attempts for 132 yards and 2 scores. Cody Nolan added 84 yards and also scored twice. The Baymen get Bayport/Blue Point at home Friday night. The North Forkers have a tough test in Babylon on the same evening. We s t h a m p t o n B e a c h w a s surprised by Harborfields Friday night 27-20 in a Division III game. The home team couldn’t contain Andrew Widmer, who passed for two scores, one 70-yarder to Brian Corrigan. The locals couldn’t hold onto a 20-7 halftime lead. Westhampton plays at Bellport Saturday afternoon. Mercy rocked Southampton Saturday 35-13, on the Mariners’ home turf, no less. Reggie Archer was all up in it, rolling for 203 yards on 20 attempts and adding a touchdown. Paolo Foscolo scored twice for the winners.

Safety At Sea: Your Radio Last week, I wrote the following in the column about sounding smart on the radio: “Unless you know the cell phone number of every boater in your vicinity, your only source of help is your radio. You don’t have one, you say? Stop reading and check yourself in someplace because that is simply nutty. Your radio is likely to be your only source of help and you go to sea without one? Over a couple of hundred dollars? And Westmarine, for one, will give you a three-year warranty on the radio . . . Come on, Bunky, where else can we skimp with such potentially disastrous results?” And I meant it. But you did install it properly, didn’t you? This column is about that.
Handheld vs Fixed-Mount A little like the debate between laptop computers and desk top computers, this debate is all about power. Handheld “VHF” (very high frequency) radios typically put out
5 watts of power while fixed-mount VHFs operate at 25 watts. When it comes to transmission power, more watts mean more power – to drill through weather and all semipermeable objects on the way to the horizon.
A Straight Line To The Horizon? Everyone has stood on their “tippy-toes” to see better. Height matters in getting to the horizon. For the math wizards, the formula to calculate the distance to the “true” horizon (the one you can see on a really clear day) is: to take the square root of the height of the observer, multiply by 13. Remember my short-hand formula for converting meters to feet? Multiply the meters by 3 and add 10 percent. The reverse works, too, for converting feet to meters – take off 10 percent and divide the result by 3 – close enough. Say you’re 6 feet tall and your floor boards are 1 foot over the water line. So, your eye is roughly 7 feet over
THE EAST END’S SEPTIC SERVICE COMPANY FOR 80 YEARS
www.indyeastend.com
sea level. Seven feet less 10 percent is about 6.5 feet and, dividing by 3 yields roughly 2 meters. The square root of 13 multiplied by 2 (or 26) is roughly 5. So, it is 5 kilometers to the horizon for the handheld VHF you are holding near your mouth as you speak – and it is pumping the signal out at 5 watts. What are 5 kilometers in miles? Multiply by 60 percent (.60) to convert to miles . . . 3 miles. How about putting in an 8-foot antenna and wiring it to your fixedmount radio? You put the antenna on the top-side (the roof) of your helm cover. Let’s say that top-side is 7 feet over the water and the antenna is, as noted, 8 feet high. Let’s do the math. 13 multiplied by 15 feet = 195. The square root of 195 is roughly 14. What are 14 kilometers in miles? Multiply by .6 and you get over 8 miles . . . and you’re pumping out the signal at 25 watts. If help is 5 miles away, your handheld isn’t going to get your may-day to him. And heavy weather will clearly impact that 5-watter more than the 25-watter. Oh, but you do know his cell phone number – don’t you? You don’t need to memorize the formulas or even look up in the answers in tables. You want to throw your signal as hard as you can (watts) as far as you can (height.)
September 19, 2012 35
It is just that simple. In the weeks ahead we’ll dig into things like “gain” and Digital Selective Channels as well as the USCG’s state of the art communication system now in testing “Out East” – Rescue 21. But suffice to say in here, when you are putting out a may-day, you want what every battle commander has wanted from the beginning of time – power and distance. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing.”

Yanks And Mets Should Avoid Big Spending The Yankees have done it successfully, while the Mets have tried and never met expectations. Yankee fans are used to it, while Met fans wish they were accustomed to it. With no salary cap, baseball has always been the sport where teams can simply outspend the competition to try and win. However, over the past decade teams like the Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland Athletics have demolished the theory that money equals success. This trend has continued this season more than ever. If the
regular season ended this past Sunday, five of the top seven payrolls would not be division winners. Only two (Yankees and Rangers) would qualify for the post season. Further, seven of the 10 teams to make the postseason (remember a second Wild Card added), would be outside the top 10 in payroll. That leaves out big spenders such as the Angels, Red Sox, Tigers, Marlins, Phillies and Dodgers. Barring a deep playoff run, both Yankee and Met fans will want their team to spend the big bucks to win

in 2013. The Mets are currently middle of the pack (14th) with a $93 million roster. So they should have lots of room to spend, right? Well, the team announced two weeks ago that they won’t change their payroll in 2013. But that’s okay, as free agent spending is no longer the cure for mediocre performance. The top free agents for the upcoming offseason are Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton and Los Angeles Angels pitcher Zack Greinke. Hamilton has struggled with substance abuse, and Greinke has a history of anxiety disorders. Neither of these personalities would likely fare well under the bright lights and pressure of New York City. Outside of the top two, the crop is fairly mediocre: Russell Martin, Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, and Delmon Young to name a few. When I looked at the list of
IN THE NEWS
potential free agents in the 2014 class, there were 75 position players possibly available. Of those 75, only three were under the age of 30 (and each would be 29 years old). Baseball’s new trend is to lock up young players in their mid-20s by persuading them to accept security today over the uncertainty of a costly injury in the future. And in the post-steroid era, players in their mid-30’s are back to being what they once were, journeymen approaching the end of their careers. The Mets have tried paying for prior accomplishments over the past couple of decades, and rarely has it worked out. (Speaking of which, the Mets owe a combined $50 million to Johan Santana and Jason Bay in 2013.) The future for the Mets appears to be 2014 and beyond. Bay and Santana will be off the books (buyouts for 2014), and by then pitching prospects Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler should be ready to give the rotation a young, onetwo punch. So while Met fans will be screaming from the hilltops for their front office to spend big bucks, we know that formula doesn’t translate into wins like it used to. We also know if the Yankees don’t hold on to win their division and then make a deep postseason run, their fans will also be looking for a quick fix. But, management and fans of both franchises would be wise to look at their division counterparts in Tampa Bay and Washington to see how a franchise is built for sustained success from the ground up.
