Dems Debate, And Agree, In Southampton
Independent/Emily Toy
By Emily Toy
Democratic State Senate hopefuls Bridget Fleming and Jennifer Maertz have a lot in common. So it seemed last week in a debate held between the two at Southampton’s Rogers Memorial Library, where they answered social, economical, ethical and political questions about the First Senate District they hope to represent. Hosted by the League of Women Voters, the forum showed the pair holds a definite, prominent common
ground: the current system is failing everyone and 36-year incumbent Senator Ken LaValle deserves the boot. The pair will face off in a Democratic primary election on September 13 for a chance to challenge LaValle in November. Fleming charged LaValle has, “failed to protect our economy,” and has not done a good job concerning the necessities of the First Senatorial District. After each candidate gave her
opening statement, questions from both the League and the 60 strong audience began, with the first one concerning how to improve efficiencies and competition, not only on Long Island, but throughout the state as well. “Business as usual has failed us in Albany,” Fleming, a Southampton Town councilwoman, Sag Harbor attorney and Noyac resident, said. “The electric rates on Long Island are astronomical,” she said adding, “It’s expensive to run a business here because of electric rates. We’ve lost 5700 jobs since 2010. We’re not an ATM.” Maertz, a litigation lawyer from Southampton, who’s now a resident of Rocky Point, agreed. “For years National Grid has been working the system to become a monopoly on Long Island,” she said. “This is a glaring reason why we need to support small businesses and not hinder their development.” Education was another topic the two candidates felt strongly about. Whether or not school performance should be tied with the teachers was a question posed, with both candidates believing the system needs to improve

its fairness, which would mean imposing restrictions that were fair as well as accurate. “I don’t agree with the evaluation system now,” Maertz said. “We shouldn’t be tying funding to teacher evaluations alone.” Fleming added, “We need to stop sending tax dollars to Albany to subsidize the state’s other schools.” The two candidates’ thoughts on education tied in with the success of the state’s recently imposed twopercent tax levy cap. “If it’s continued,” Maertz said, “more of a fair share of funding would need to be included.” “Right now we are sending more funding than we get back,” she said. “LaValle needs to support his party, to bring back a fair share of state aid. We need to create greater efficiencies, we need to do more and look to mandate reform.” Fleming agreed, saying “We have to give aid to schools if we have the tax cap, but also be sure to give schools and municipalities the proper staffing. We can’t expect to render services without the appropriate staff.” The real estate market on the East End was another topic Maertz and Fleming agreed upon. “A number of my clients are facing foreclosure,” Fleming said. “We have to do something to help Continued on Page 14.

FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN YEARS AGO, OOOOOPS
END OF SUMMER FUNK I’ve got to come to grips with the fact that summer is over. This is the time of the year when I go into a funk and tell you what’s really on my mind. For example: Call me crazy, but I would rather see a picture of Prince Henry naked than see a picture of Queen Elizabeth naked. Leave it to my fellow Republicans to screw up: Let’s see how many people think we’re a party made up of old white men. Let’s get an ancient white man, Clint Eastwood, to get up and make an unscripted rambling speech to a chair before our candidate for President, Mitt Romney, speaks. Dumb. Speaking of dumb, my column “Democrats for Romney” in The New York Post and The Independent was well received and got a ton of positive mail. My favorite was the letter from a gentleman who asked: Do you think your column swayed some dumb Democrats? My answer was, “I can’t sway dumb Democrats – I can only sway intelligent Democrats.”
View our Pic Paper edition at
www.indyeastend.com
I was disappointed in Chris Christie’s speech. I wanted him to sound like our next President should the country survive Barack Obama in 2016. He didn’t. Maybe when he loses about 100 pounds he will be a better speaker. He’s a great Governor for New Jersey. He’s a smart, brave man, and just who we need in the White House to lead us back to jobs and prosperity. But the man who impressed me as being a great presidential candidate in 2016 was Paul Ryan. What a great speech. What command of the subject and the language. He frankly overshadowed Romney, who made a pretty good speech himself. I realized what a great speech Ryan made when I watched Brian Williams, Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell scrambling to kill the effect of the speech a minute after the speech was completed. “He lied . . .” “He exaggerated . . .” they said. They sounded like they were getting their words directly in their earpieces from the Democratic National Committee. I like Brian Williams and consider him a friend, but this was not his finest moment. Tom Brokaw, who was part of the group, seemed embarrassed by this open display of NBC’s pro-Obama, pro-Democrat bias. I expect the networks’ (ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN) coverage of Republicans to be slanted, but I never expected them to be so obvious. It ticked me off and made me dust off this column on Joe Biden, Obama’s Vice Presidential running mate, which I wrote before the election of 2008.
Oh-my-gosh, that was close. Do you know what I almost did with that headline? I almost gave away the beginning of the next campaign speech by Joe Biden, the man whom Barack Obama has selected to be his Vice President – a heartbeat from the presidency. Oh well, I started it so I might as well tell you about it. Joe Biden’s words, in his next speech, are inspirational and will actually bring many loyal Democrats to tears. In this speech Biden will tackle our energy problem and will tell the American people, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” And when he talks about his opposition to our drilling for oil in Alaska and off of our shores, Biden will say about Saudi Arabia, “Never have so many owed so much to so few.” Then he will close his speech with these inspirational words on why he and Barack Obama want to raise our taxes: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Wait a second you must be saying, these are words and thoughts you’ve heard before. Well, er . . . er . . .yes, but Joe Biden will tell you he just “borrowed” these words. You see, Joe Biden is a plagiarist. Or as The New York Times so politely put it the other day: “In September of 1987, when he was running for President, Biden was caught ‘cribbing’ from other politician’s speeches.” “Cribbing” – what a cute word. Cribbing, it’s sort of like Plagiarism Lite. Here’s how Biden screwed up: In 1987 a British Labor politician, Neil Kinnock, made a dramatic speech describing his rise from his humble roots. Kinnock spoke of his ancestors who played football after long days in the coal mines, and spoke how they paved the way for him to become the first in his family to attend college.

Kinnock started his speech this way: “Why am I the first Kinnock in a thousand generations to be able to get to university? Why is Glenna the first woman in her family in a thousand generations to be able to get to university?” Cut to Biden, as a candidate in the presidential race in 1988, who started a speech at the Iowa State Fair this way: “I started thinking as I was coming over here, why is it that Joe Biden is the first in his family ever to go to a university? Why is it that my wife who is sitting out there in the audience is the first in her family to ever go to college?” Then he went on to steal the rest of Kinnock’s speech almost word for word. Actually this was more than plagiarism. This might have been the first recorded case of identity theft. If my memory serves me The New York Times was the newspaper that broke the story about Biden’s plagiarism. They were backing that dufus Michael Dukakis in those days. Biden’s problems didn’t end there. More charges followed. A law professor said Biden had plagiarized sections of a paper in college. He admitted he plagiarized a law review article for a paper he wrote in his first year at law school. He copied five pages word for word without attribution. Then it was charged that later he had plagiarized parts of speeches from Bobby Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. But last Saturday, when The New York Times heard Barack Obama had chosen Joe Biden to be his VP, they gushed about him as a “Senate Stalwart” and never revealed their role in nailing him in 1988. Apparently The Times, which has justifiably fired any reporter caught plagiarizing in their newspaper (remember Jayson Blair?), feels there is no room for a cheat in their newsroom but feels it’s perfectly fine to have a cheat as the Vice President of the United States, as long as he’s a Democrat. Perhaps the reason Joe Biden is so quick to use other people’s words is that he is such a klutz when he uses his own words. In an embarrassing attempt to discredit Obama during the recent primaries he described him as the first “clean” black candidate. Then he apologized. Since we don’t know whose words or ideas he may be stealing I urge you listen carefully to any speech that Joe Biden makes in the future. Or, as Joe Biden might put it, “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.” If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@dfjp.com.

Area resident Julia C. Mead is spearheading the move to close the neighborhood off the all but local traffic. In a letter to the East Hampton Star, where she once worked, Mead details defects in the roadways that are similar to many roads in East Hampton Town -- the roads are narrow, have no sidewalks, no shoulders in places, and poor sight distance on some corners. Traffic congestion worsened, she wrote, after East Hampton Village banned heavy trucks and through traffic on the residential streets on the side of Cedar Street opposite the Miller Lanes. however. Speaking of the narrow roads in the neighborhood, Mead says, “Those are not ideal conditions for the many pedestrians and bicyclists who use these roads, including children from the Oakview Highway trailer park, Whalebone Woods and Whalebone Village, headed to and from the village.” But if the proposal is adopted and the neighborhood becomes a de facto private community, bicyclists and pedestrians from those areas listed will be the only ones allowed through the subdivisions. Drivers will have to take North Main Street or backtrack to Hands Creek Road, executing a series of turns to reach the village. Outside private residential areas where private roads are owned by homeowners, there are no other neighborhoods in East Hampton Town where traffic is restricted to residents only. “You cant shut a public road d o w n ,” s a i d t o w n H i g h w a y Superintendent Steve Lynch. “It’s a town road, anybody in the world can come and drive on that road.” Lynch said any law prohibiting through traffic on a public road would be unenforceable. Beach “Renourishment” Goes To Voters By Emily Toy
It looks like the beachfronts from Water Mill to Sagaponack may get a much-needed facelift. That is if the Southampton Town Board votes to push a nearly $24 million “beach renourishment” project forward, after its third, and what is expected to be its final, public hearing on the issue scheduled for next Wednesday. Last week, those in favor of the town board’s beach erosion project to reconstruct a six-mile stretch of ocean beach said the majority of the 125 property owners involved in the project are willing to come up with the money. During a hearing on the proposal last Thursday night, Supervisor Anna
Throne-Holst said that if the town board approves the project, it would call for a referendum of support among those property owners, with the beachfront homeowners offering to pick up most of the tab. State law mandates a permissive referendum regardless. If a certain number of residents petition for referendum -- just three or four in each of the two special taxing districts (in this case Sagaponack and Bridgehampton) -- the town must have a public vote. The project calls for over two million tons of offshore sand being pumped onto beaches from Flying Point Beach up to Sagaponack, to the East Hampton Town line. The oceanfront property owners within

the six-mile stretch would fund the project by a bond to be repaid over 10 years. It would average out to be about $20,000 a year for each property owner. Southampton Town owns five public beaches in the project and would contribute a proportional share -- $3 million -- toward the effort. Recently, opposition to the project has increased, leading to speculation a permissive referendum would likely be held before the project moved forward. Throne-Holst’s call for a vote eliminated any delay the petition process might have caused. The town will have to wait 60 days from the day it approves the

Eye Scav Plant Closure By Kitty Merrill
They have had enough crap, so to speak. With just one carter said to be still using the septic waste plant in East Hampton, some officials on the town board are looking to cut their fiscal losses and close the place altogether. Tomorrow night, the board will hold a public hearing on a measure temporarily shutting down the scavenger waste facility located on Springs Fireplace Road. The scav plant has been the subject of protracted discussion since Supervisor Bill Wilkinson first took office in 2010. In fact, prior administrations also often perceived the plant as an albatross around the collective neck of taxpayers. It was frequently subject to violations from the State Department of Environmental Conservation and seemed to serve just a small segment of the year round population as more and more carters chose to use upisland facilities. On campaign for re-election last year, Wilkinson said he had no idea what the future of the plant might

be. But within days of making that statement during The Independent’s candidates interview, Wilky released a proposed budget that eliminated funding for the facility, suggesting he’d planned to shut it down or sell it off all along. More recently, the town-appointed Budget and Finance Advisory Committee weighed in on the side of a temporary closure. The plant was built in the 1980s and designed as a scavenger waste

treatment facility. Thanks to a handful of environmental citations from the DEC that would be costly to remedy, the site morphed into a transfer station this year. The budget and finance committee called for closing the transfer station, too, selecting Labor Day as a target date. The move would supposedly save the town $30,000 per month in operating costs. Wilkinson and Councilwoman Theresa Quigley have supported the privatization of the property. They balked at the closure initially, and called for a public hearing. Problems at the plant prompted

more holistic discussions about how the town handles septic waste. Councilman Dominick Stanzione supports crafting a comprehensive long term plan, and budget advisors suggested officials hold off any sale of the plant until after such a study has been adopted. The study would include a look at the plant’s environmental impacts. If town officials can ensure the environment is protected, privatization of the plant could be a viable alternative, a report by the budget and finance committee opines. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

As time wore on, she recounted, “We got raffle prizes from literally every business in town.” Lappin went door-to-door raising money, and the Old Montauk Athletic Club raised some $7000. OMAC’s president Henricka Connor donated $1000 personally; another anonymous donor contributed $2500. Last Thursday the club presented the check at a special meeting of the Springs School Board. Earlier in the month, a letter from McPartland noted kids have been playing on teams with East Hampton counterparts for 20 years. Pushing towards the finish line, she wrote, “The response from all corners of East Hampton Town has been remarkable. Donations large and small are pouring in and we are so encouraged by the results.” The first group of athletes was able to participate last week, without missing IndependentAd_July12_Vert.pdf a single day of practice. 1 kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Endowment From And For The Heart By Kitty Merrill
It will be named for its benefactors. The Audrey and Martin Gruss Heart and Stroke Center at Southampton Hospital derives its seed money from the pair of philanthropists who last week wrote a check for $5 million to the hospital. The goal for the center is to
provide stroke treatment and carotid stents, as well as, according to a release from the hospital, “consolidate a broad spectrum of new and sophisticated diagnostic and treatment capabilities with existing cardiovascular programs and services.” An advanced hybrid endovascular surgical suite will be a core
component of the center. The hybrid OR will offer the latest imaging technology in a sterile operating room environment, allowing for the performance of such procedures as carotid stenting to prevent and treat stroke, aneurism repair, plus treatment of vascular, peripheral arterial and abdominal occlusive diseases.
IN THE NEWS
The center will include space for a cardiovascular diagnostic suite, an advanced heart and stroke monitoring center, and an education center to provide skills training for healthcare professionals. “It is well-known that the over-50 age group has the highest probability of experiencing a stroke or heart attack,” Audrey Gruss, President of the Audrey and Martin Gruss Foundation observed. “With many of us spending months or weekends year round in Southampton and the East End, Martin and I felt it was important that our local hospital have the capability to conduct stroke and vascular distress intervention.” Gruss added, “We are gratified by this addition to Southampton Hospital, knowing that our family and friends will be able to get the heart and stroke medical care they need, when and where they need it.” Robert S. Chaloner, President and CEO of Southampton Hospital called the new center “transformational” for the hospital. “It will significantly advance the Hospital’s ability to diagnose and treat stroke and cardiovascular disease, and become a vital component of the care provided by our community hospital,” he said. The absence of such a center means that many patients must travel to Stony Brook for care — a trip that can be harrowing during the summer, with traffic backed up across the East End. The Audrey and Martin Gruss Foundation also provides funding for the Hope for Depression Research Foundation, which was founded by Audrey in 2006 in honor of her mother, Hope. The Florida Philanthropic Network listed the Audrey and Martin Gruss Foundation among its top 50 grant makers by assets. With assets topping $97 million in 2010 it was ranked number 34. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Felix Cavaliere At The Stephen Talkhouse By Rick Murphy
It doesn’t seem like it was 47 years ago, but for many of us the summer of 1965 was like no other -- that’s when we fell in love with rock and roll and our lives changed forever. Though across the Atlantic there were some pretty good bands beginning to attract widespread attention, for us the East End of Long Island was the epicenter of rock. Kids would pile into cars and head to – of all places – East Quogue. On one side of the street, The Vagrants had set up shop for the summer. Across the street, at a nightclub called The Barge – and yes it was a barge -- the hottest band ever was ripping it up and drawing crowds from all over the East Coast. The Young Rascals were complete unknowns then; within a year or two they were one of the hottest acts in the world. Sunday night Felix Cavaliere, the kingpin of the group, showed up at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett to reminisce and perform, and a lot of same people who packed The Barge many years ago were there. First the bad news – everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. The keyboard Cavaliere was set to use cracked; the air conditioner went out, making the Talkhouse seem even more like The Barge, and Cavaliere, who always performs with a band, did a rare solo gig. On this night the smooth rich baritone was sometimes reduced to a whisper, as the performer, hoarse, couldn’t reach the familiar peaks in many of his most beloved songs. The good news, though, is that the audience could. It was a love fest to be sure. Cavaliere, playing on a borrowed electronic keyboard, took the crowd down memory lane. He was trained as a classical pianist, he recalled, but when he heard Ray Charles play “What I Say,” it changed his life. He then played a rocking version of the classic, with the audience joining in. At Syracuse University, his parents expected him to pursue a career as a doctor. Instead, he started a band. The rest is history: as a member of Joey Dee and the Starlighters, he was playing a gig in Germany when he and his band mates saw an unknown band called The Beatles perform – the girls were going wild, he noticed. The Young Rascals were born shortly thereafter. The legendar y maestro Sid Bernstein heard about all the
commotion at The Barge and went to see for himself. So did Jerry Wexler, who lived in East Hampton and ran Atlantic Records. After a couple of minor hits, “Good Lovin’” exploded onto the charts and went to Number One in a dozen countries. “Still, it was time to write our own songs,” he told the throng at the Talkhouse. “That’s what everyone was doing.” Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, who shared vocals with him in the band, penned a
couple of minor hits – he played one of them: “You Better Run” – but the record company wasn’t impressed. “They said we’re going to have to bring in some songwriters for you.” Having recently fallen in love, Cavaliere turned to his new “muse” for inspiration. “Love songs, I said to myself, write about love.” And so he did: “Lonely Too Long,” “A Girl Like You,” “It’s A Beautiful Morning,” and “How Can I Be Sure” all became hits. Cavaliere performed them Continued on Page 28.

Same sex marriage (which LaValle voted against last year), sustainability, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority payroll tax, and a woman’s ability to access health care, such as Planned Parenthood, were all subjects both candidates essentially agreed with
each other upon. The only area where the two candidates blatantly disagreed was over the issue of campaign finance. Fleming said the issue of public financing of campaigns was “critical.” “We’ve all seen the destructive impact of unlimited spending,” she said. “That’s got to change.” Fleming added that in order to be viable, “You have to be able to raise money.” Maertz disagreed. “We do not elect people to office because they are good fundraisers. I disagree about funding being the number one reason for candidates to be here.” Maertz opined that voters in this district are more sophisticated and look at the viewpoints on the issues, rather than just the candidate. Toward the end of the hour-long debate, Fleming closed by stating, “We need to decide who can break into this boy’s club and uproot a 36-year senator out of touch with the district.” Maertz said she “knows what it’s like to struggle. My husband and I have been struggling for years. We’re not getting our fair share. I want kids that are from here to be able to come back here and stay on Long Island. Our youth are suffering. United Way Benefit A Success
On August 25, chef and restaurateur Tom Colicchio and his wife, filmmaker Lori Silverbush, the rock star Jon Bon Jovi, his wife Dorothea Hurley, along with Susan Burden, philanthropist Avis Richards and Marathon Hedge Fund co-founder Bruce Richards hosted the 2nd annual “What’s on the Table?” an event to benefit the anti-hunger programs of the United Way of New York City. Over $200,000 was raised to benefit UWNYC’s work to reduce hunger and provide more nutritious food for struggling children, families and seniors. In addition to Colicchio and Bon Jovi, guests included chef Katie Lee, supermodel Hilary Rhoda, CNN anchor Alina Cho, Estee Lauder head John Demsey, Dan Abrams, actress Natasha Bell, “Royal Pains” actor Rupak Ginn, Bloomberg TV host Matt Miller, Dayssi and Paul Olarte de Kanavos, Duane Hampton, Louise Grunwald, Esther Newberg, Charmaine and Carter Burden, and Stephanie Hirsch. United Way of New York City’s Jennifer Jones Austin, Senior Vice-President for Community Investment and Kevin Taylor, Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement were also in attendance. Held at the Richards residence in Southampton, the event emphasized the need not only to help the hungry in New York City access food in times of emergency but also to ensure that food they receive is fresh and nutritious. In keeping with the theme, guests dined on culinary delights from five of Colicchio’s restaurants. In their speeches, Colicchio, Bon Jovi, both Richards, and Silverbush – director of the forthcoming documentary about hunger titled “A Place at the Table” – stressed the critical nature of the issue of hunger in America. One startling statistic revealed is that one in five children go hungry daily in the United States. Guests were encouraged to call

One hundred percent of the evening’s net proceeds went to the United Way’s campaign to significantly reduce hunger in New York City. RICK’S SPACE Fear Of Flying? I fear nothing, except maybe mice and feminists. But I admit to a certain amount of uneasiness when I’m forced to fly. The first time I was on a plane I was about 21 and me and a bunch of guys from Sag Harbor were flying down to New Orleans. There we were goofing around saying “god damn” this and “god damn” that when we hit heavy turbulence. I never prayed so hard in my life. Not only did I apologize to God for taking his name in vain, I apologized for every sin I had committed from the time I was an embryo. I even promised to give up cussin’ and drinkin’, but when we landed safely I told him I was just kidding. A few years later I was in San Juan and a group of people at the hotel were going to take one of those rickety charter planes to some nearby island to either visit a rain forest or see a cock fight, I can’t remember which (those are the only
two tourist attractions in Puerto Rico). When we got to the “airport” – a strip of dirt -- I took one look at the shifty pilot and the tin plane eight of us were about to board and I said, “No thanks, amigo.” I took the cab back to the hotel. That plane? It crashed – I’m not kidding. Karen hates airplanes, and makes no bones about it. So when it was time for us to fly to Cancun on our honeymoon, she was pretty shaken. I had talked her into it by assuring her I would be there every step of the way, and that I had my lucky rabbit’s foot that never let me down. It was true I was pretty lucky, but when you think about it the rabbit wasn’t or his foot wouldn’t have been in my pocket. But I digress. When we boarded the plane we discovered we weren’t sitting together – we had no idea why, but the plane was booked solid. She turned around and looked at me forlornly but when the plane began

to take off she grabbed the arm of the guy next to her as if he were hubby number two. Later in the flight the pilot made what was to me an astounding announcement: we were over international waters and smoking was allowed in the last nine rows of the plane. Half the people in the front immediately made a beeline for the back of the plane including me and hubby number two. The stewardess told us we had to sit down but at this point we were so determined to get a couple puffs in we ignored her. It was like an act of civil disobedience – we were going to smoke, and if they wanted to put us away in some dingy Mexican jail then that’s what they would have to do – as long as smoking was allowed. By the time it was time to land Karen was attached to husband number three, clinging to him for dear life. Luckily, I was the only husband in the bedroom for the honeymoon. We were sitting in the Cancun airport a week later waiting to fly back to Florida when I picked up the Sunday Miami Herald. The front page had a five-column headline – a plane from Cancun had crashed in the everglades the day before — some make, model, same airline.
IN THE NEWS
I hid the front page from her and thankfully, she didn’t find out about the crash until we set down safely, even though she damn near married two other guys when I insisted on smoking in the plane instead of soothing her nerves. Orville and Wilbur Wright are credited with inventing the first flying machine. This was a lot more profound than, say, creating a spacecraft that can go to the moon, because rockets were tested without pilots, and with monkeys. Orville, and Wilbur reached that inevitable moment in history with more than a little trepidation. “Are you sure this thing will fly?” “Positive.” “Positively Certain?” “Absolutely positively certain.” “Ok, you make the first flight.” “No, you go.” The first astronauts complained they were no more than monkeys. The first space capsules didn’t even have windows. When the astronauts complained they put in a little window and a steering stick, but it didn’t really work. They were like the steering wheels on the little cars at the carnival -- you can turn them as much as you want, but the little car is going to go in the same direction every time. I had a job that required I fly fairly frequently, so I became somewhat at ease over time. Karen, though, has avoided flying ever since save for a funeral a few years back that necessitated a family intervention to get her on board. Historians say Wilber “won” a coin toss and made the first flight, which lasted 12 seconds. Then he came down and said, ‘It’s your turn Orville — take her to Canada!’ and Orville said, ‘Dude, you were only three feet off the ground!’

The Southampton Beach Erosion Project Old-timers will tell you there is a reason why the wealthiest people lived the furthest away from the beach and poorer folk settled by the water – the sea can indeed be a harsh mistress. On the East End, the erosion rate on the Atlantic shore has increased tenfold in the past century, and beaches that once had hundreds of feet of sand are literally disappearing. In Southampton, a group of oceanfront homeowners from Bridgehampton and Sagaponack have proposed a stunning plan to refurbish the beaches and pay for the project themselves, though the town would kick in a share for the public beaches affected. It’s an ambitious plan to be sure, but one fraught with questions. Would it work? Refurbished beaches often come undone at the first good Nor’easter -- would it be folly to tempt the gods? And what of the neighbors to the east of the project – would their beaches be negatively affected? There is also the danger that down the road homeowners that kick in the bulk of the $24 million estimated cost will feel emboldened to claim ownership and attempt to limit or stop vehicular traffic on the beach altogether. There is also the matter of those homeowners who don’t want to participate – they could end up being forced to. Since the town has to kick in $3 million, every taxpayer is affected. We’re not sure forking over more in taxes to help out a handful of the wealthiest people in the state is going to sit well with most folks. The matter seems to be headed for a referendum – with the 125 beachfront homeowners deciding among themselves. The rest of the taxpayers in town may

Too Bad For Us Dear Editor, This is a very important election. Each side has a very different idea of what government should be and how services should be delivered. I was hoping the Bishop-Altschuler race would be run on those same ideas. There are major philosophical differences between the two candidates and I was hopeful we would talk about the big picture and let the voters decide which way they prefer. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like that will be the case. Too bad for us as citizens.

Beach Clean-Up To The Editor, In conjunction with Ocean Conservancy’s 27th Annual International Coastal Clean-Up, the East Hampton Town Trustees are organizing a beach cleanup on Saturday, September 15th. The Trustees are encouraging all residents to participate. Come to the Trustees office at 267 Bluff Road any day between now and September 15th to pick up garbage collection bags, gloves, and a special recycling decoder card. want to have their day at the polls as well. Limiting Traffic In East Hampton, a group of neighbors in a small residential neighborhood are up in arms because there is a lot of “through” traffic on their otherwise quiet roads. Welcome to the club. This summer, like most recent ones, has seen enormous congestion on our roads. Oftentimes, drivers will try to avoid clogged arteries by bypassing the lights and stop signs around major roads – that means cutting down side streets, etc. The neighbors on Miller Lane East and West surely are affected by drivers stuck on Cedar Street because they sometimes cut across Miller Lane to Oakview Highway – we get that. It happens on dozens and dozens of other roads in the town and East Hampton Village as well – think Gould Street, for example. What would happen, though, if the town acquiesced to every neighborhood group that seeks to limit traffic on their streets? The fact is, public roads are public roads. The town owns them, and drivers use them. There is no law that says only people who live on a road can drive down it, nor can there ever be. We urge the town board to nip this idea in the bud, with all due respect to the neighborhood residents, who surely have had their fill of lumbering trucks pounding down their road. Those who live on Cedar Street don’t like it either, but they are stuck with them. Granting traffic easement for one neighborhood will open the door for everyone else to request the same thing – and by setting a precedent, the board will have little artillery to deny the requests. Napeague Stretch. Please be sure to place all collected items well above the high tide mark by 3 PM. Between 5 PM and 6 PM the Trustees will pick up any garbage collected from the beaches adjacent to Gerard Drive and Louse Point Road. At these locations, please leave all trash collected beside the Town trash receptacles. If you would like to clean up another beach area, please contact the Trustees. During the clean-up, please try to separate recyclables from the trash using the special decoder card provided, and recycle the items from home as you normally would. Remember, land based trash can become marine debris, which spoils our waters, impacts human health, and harms marine inhabitants and other wildlife. Marine debris also washes back up and litters our shoreline. It helps when we all work together to clean up our beautiful beaches and reduce marine debris.

Extreme Prejudice Dear Editor, Regarding the AP article “SEAL book raises questions about bin Laden’s death,” August 29, 2012: The U.S. has offered no evidence whatsoever to show that Osama Bin Laden made even the slightest movement to resist the Navy Seal attack. No matter what one thinks of the Al Qaeda leader, this was a cold blooded American plot sanctioned by President Obama to assassinate Bin Laden and secretly remove and bury his body. This is not justice or democracy in action but the stuff made from movies. In the classic film Apocalypse Now the character Willard, played by Martin Sheen, Continued on page 18.

We know that a man who had a $12,000 job organizing for food stamps, welfare checks and registering the dead to vote knows far more about running the world’s largest economy, how to invest into great companies like Solyndra, and is far more generous and kind to people than a damned Mormon who gave away his father’s entire fortune and keeps giving away the rest every year; whose children and relatives will do likewise, and who had factually created tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of jobs for multi-billion dollar multi-national firms like Office Depot and the Sports Authority.

What were your thoughts about the Republican convention? Seth Ginsberg The messages were well delivered. I hope the Democrats do as good a job and keep Obama in the White House. As for Clint Eastwood, he was funny. But it was a strategic mistake drawing attention away from Romney. But in my opinion that’s a good thing. Nancy Pearson Ann Romney was great. It was nice to learn about their background. Bain Capital was something he built from the bottom up. A ragsto riches story. Chris Christie and Paul Ryan did really well too. I’m a Romney supporter. At least he knows how to create jobs. Will Ulrich I don’t think the Clint Eastwood thing was as bad as all the pundits made out. He’s a Hollywood guy. He’s an actor. I thought it was very funny. But there were no surprises at the convention. It went exactly as I expected it to. They stayed right on their message. Ben Sosne I don’t agree with a lot of their policies. I thought they pandered to their base. They’re very conservative on social issues. They sure played it fast and loose with facts. Clint Eastwood’s speech was bizarre. They must regret not checking his speech in advance.
Jobs that pay taxes, fill the coffers and house and clothe families. We also know that a man who has a wife, daughters, a mother and sisters must hate women desperately and is determined to wage a war on them. That is why for the last seven years since the Democrats and Tim Bishop took control of Congress, and four since the Democrats took back the White House, the Federal Reserve and the Treasury, millions of women have lost their jobs, their homes, their livelihood, often lost their marriages and even their children; just as they had lost their opportunity to send their children to decent schools in decent neighborhoods. And to make them feel even better, this administration made sure they have lost their opportunity to get decent medical care from an Obamacare that provides the minimum care if any. They should just try to

get a new OB/GYN when they move to the next neighborhood! Good luck with that. Women have lost all opportunity to achieve the American Dream under an administration that celebrates underachievement, punishes success, and spreads not wealth, but misery. To all. That, fellow Americans, is Obama’s and Tim Bishop’s America. Go ahead, and vote for four more years of it. After all, you are satisfied with the results, are you not? The record of this administration’s war on women and children has been the impoverishment of the vast middle class of America, 23 million unemployed, 4 million on disability because their unemployment checks had run out, and countless others who long ago stopped looking or being counted as they enthusiastically enjoy the fruits of hope and change. While you, you college age boys and girls who had to move back into your parent’s basement apartments, are you enjoying staring at the fading Obama posters on your walls? You are? Like a foreign invader Obama has figuratively moved in with you who had recently earned advanced degrees with no hope for finding work and has decisively and literally ruined your lives. Go on, deny it. Continued on page 19.

four years. And 10 years down the road, look your children in the eye and tell them why you did what you did. ANDREW BENJAMIN
Two Choices To the Editor, There’s a saying that “character is what we do when we think no one is looking.” In politics, character is doing the right thing even when it goes against your self-interest. The Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees public sector union recently screened Congressman Tim Bishop and his opponent Randy Altschuler. In exchange for their endorsement, they pushed the candidates to take a stand against my proposal to sell the John J. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility to a private buyer; despite the fact that my plan will reduce next year’s deficit by $30 million, keep all the patients at the facility and require the buyer to offer union jobs to all the current employees. Congressman Bishop has a nearly 100 percent pro-labor record and is the only federal official who attempted to stem the losses at the facility, when he allowed veterans on Tricare to be eligible to be placed there. However, he understands that the county has an enormous deficit and that we cannot afford to raise taxes on Suffolk County residents above the tax cap. Even though it would have been easy for him to have just said, “Sure, I’m against selling Foley” in order to get an endorsement, he chose to stay out of this non-federal issue. Randy Altschuler is a self-proclaimed tea
party conservative. While approximately 85 percent of the patients at the Foley facility rely on Medicaid, Altschuler supports the Paul Ryan budget that would cut Medicaid by $810 billion, forcing millions off the program and cutting rates to facilities like Foley. Altschuler tells tea party groups he wants to cut the size of government and then tells public sector unions he opposes efforts to reduce the size of their government. He claims to respect local government yet when his own self-interest is at stake, inserts his opinion into a non-federal issue. This week, Randy Altschuler received the endorsement of the Suffolk County

Association of Municipal Employees because he spoke out against the sale. Two candidates, two choices that speak volumes about their character. Suffolk County deserves to be represented by people who do the right thing when no one is looking and are willing to do the right thing for the people, even when it goes against their own self interest. This is just one more example of why Tim Bishop has the character to serve Suffolk County and why his opponent does not. STEVE BELLONE SUFFLOK COUNTY EXECUTIVE

As Dan Greenfield astutely observed about the progressives who are moving forward so fast that they are parroting the words of bearded men in top hats, walking sticks and wire rim glasses of a 150 years ago as they shout through time to their Twitter-fingered ideological descendants to move forward: The left are a Time Machine. They are moving forward so fast that they have arrived backward in time. They have become a BUS STOP with the buses moving forward from stop to stop until they return fifteen stops backward behind you. Hang on to your hope ladies, gents, boys and girls. That’s all you’re left with. You see, you had chosen to put your future and lives in Obama’s and Tim Bishop’s hands. You didn’t realize until I just said it, that your future happens to be, and always will be, in your hands. Now do you believe me? The mainstream media, the New York Times every day will give you one more reason to vote for Obama, Chuck Schumer and Tim Bishop. Four More Years. Every editorial is just one more reason to continue to ruin your life. Remember what Einstein or whomever said about doing the same dance over and over and expecting different results? America has been doing the same dance for seven years under Obama, Bishop and the Democrats and America is broke, Suffolk County is broke, and you are broke. Go for it! Give Obama and Bishop another

For every pet owner, there comes a time when you have to let go. If you are lucky, your friend will pass peacefully in their sleep and you can take comfort in knowing they had a great life. Less fortunate are those who recognize that their pet is suffering and make the difficult decision we call euthanasia. But those who grieve most are the ones who must leave their pet because of personal misfortune. They agonize during those final days. Desperate attempts to find a

all, with the audience providing backing vocals. His performance of “How Can I Be Sure” – which was about the inevitable break up – drew a standing ovation. Another high point was a tender, poignant rendition of “Groovin’” which morphed into “Just My Imagination,” and “My Girl.” In 1968 Cavaliere said he became involved in Bobby Kennedy’s

campaign. The assassination floored him, and he decided he wanted to take his music in a new direction. The record executives tried to dissuade him, but the band insisted on releasing “People Got To Be Free” and it became a megahit. He left the stage before recounting the sad ending of a great band – the break-up, the lawsuits, the blackballing that has never ceased. Cavaliere became a pariah to the major record labels, but he has continued to make music ever since, most notably his tragically overlooked masterpiece Dreams In Motion, released in 1994. He is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. After the show, mercifully outside in the cool air, familiar faces reminisced about that special day many of us will never forget – the first time we saw The Young Rascals.

Indoor Turf Coming To Southampton The Board of Southampton Youth Services Inc. announced that Future Stars will be going ahead with original plans to install a new indoor turf field at the Southampton Town Recreation Center. “This brings us one step closer to our goal to provide all of the residents and visitors to our town with a state of the art, indoor/ outdoor athletic facility,” said Scott Johnson, Executive director of SYS. The new field is intended for all sports play and practice from September through May. The expectation is that soccer clubs, lacrosse teams, baseball enthusiasts, field hockey groups, football fanatics, and others will all benefit from the affordable access. The indoor turf field will be the only one of its kind in the Hamptons. The facility will feature adult and Junior League play, high school team training, tournaments, and top flight coaching. Clearly there won’t be any reason to leave town to pursue one’s athletic training and development. Future Stars began this project in June 2010 when they built eight new tennis courts at SYS. “The synergy is perfect,” said Charles VanDercook, Future Stars partner. “We aim to collaborate with Scott and his mission here at SYS, to develop the best facilities, and programs for the residents of Southampton and the surrounding communities.” The Southampton Town Recreation Center already welcomes thousands of sports enthusiasts eager to stay fit and elevate their games. The new Indoor Turf field and Indoor Tennis Club will attract an even larger audience to the Center, just as the squash and gymnastics clubs did. The anticipated opening is September 17. M.X.L.

Foursomes can register for $150 and the price includes greens fees, caddies (walking course), lunch, and two hour open bar cocktail party, hors d’oeuvres, prizes and raffles. Flag sponsorships are available for $150 and tee sponsor ships are $25. Call 605-5125 for more information. Hunkering Down – Hurricanes on Long Island Last week, Hurricane Isaac gave the southeast US and Gulf Coast a pretty good dousing – and us a warning. Almost without exception, we get the tail, shoulder or rump of one or two of the dozen or so hurricanes that form up in the Atlantic between the Caribbean and Africa and bring so much destruction and misery with them as they thunder west and north. Hurricane season still has time to run. Isaac did most of his damage when he stalled over Louisiana – and dumped buckets of rain. We live on an island.
www.indyeastend.com
THE INDEPENDENT Q Traveler Watchman
mph (64 knots) or greater. Hurricanes are called typhoons in the western Pacific and cyclones in the Indian Ocean. Six of one, a half dozen of the other.
Tidal Surges For islanders, as bad as the winds will be (more on that below), it is the tides and tidal surges that will do most of the damage, which is why even these tails that go by every year leave so much trouble behind. The storm tide is added to the astronomical tides. And when those waves hit something solid, they generate force dozens of times more powerful than wind of the same speed. Andrew generated a storm tide of 17 feet. Camille in 1969? 24 feet. Add to that the population growth in our area and the increase in the value of homes and it can spell either “an absolute disaster” or “they were prepared.”
Are You Ready For the Glancing Blow? Look, if a Category 4 or 5 gets up here like in 1938, there are no levels of preparedness except evacuation. A storm surge like Camille’s basically means that everything “south of the highway,” as real estate agents like to classify the choicest properties on Long Island, is gone for all intents and purposes. But what if the glancing blow like Ivan’s in 2004 or, Earl, who came by earlier in 2012, came in head-on? How can you be ready? Before the Storm Arrives: 1. Have a family action plan – if you’re at caught at school or at work, who do you call? To grandmother’s house we go? 2. Are all flashlights working? Have canned goods and water supplies on hand? Cash? Portable radio? 3. Where ARE you going to move the boat? Don’t even think about staying on her (more on that next week!). 4. How about your prescription medicines? A first-aid kit?
What Is It? A hurricane is, in the words of scientists, an organized rotating weather system that develops in the tropics. Technically, it is a “tropical cyclone” and is classified as one of three states, with hurricanes being further classified into levels of destruction: Tropical Depression: sustained winds of 38 mph (33 knots) or less Tropical Storm: sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph (34-63 knots) Hurricane: sustained winds of 74
During the Storm Have the radio or TV on. If power goes out and you don’t have a portable radio, I’d get the kids in the car and evacuate. Shut all propane tanks off completely. Turn the refrigerator up all the way and don’t open the door idly. Fill the bathtub with water. How about the big spaghetti pot? Anything that can hold water and keep it clean. If ordered to evacuate tell tell someone where you are going. Don’t drive through flowing water.
If here is no other way, call 911 or the US Coast Guard.
After the Storm If you’ve been ordered to evacuate, don’t go back until the area is declared safe. If you see someone who needs rescuing, unless the threat of loss of life is imminent, call 911. See standing water? Do you know if any power cables lie in it? Never use candles and other open flames indoors.
September 5, 2012
Keep the flashlight at your side. This is by no means an exhaustive list. But Isaac just sent us a wakeup call. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members’ matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing.”

Giants And Jets Ready For Action The New York Giants kick off the NFL season tonight at home against their division rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. It’s the second time in five seasons New York will open as defending Super Bowl champs. The organization, players, and fans are itching for a chance to prove last year’s squad wasn’t just a team that got hot at the right time. Meanwhile, the New York Jets front office and fan base would probably like an extra month of preseason to work out some
serious kinks. The Jets didn’t score a touchdown in their first three preseason games. Finally, third string quarterback Greg McElroy led the team to their first touchdown in their last preseason tune up against Philadelphia. The Giants and Jets share a city and a stadium; yet enter 2012 on opposite ends of the spectrum. The Giants own the same number of Lombardi trophies as the Green Bay Packers. Only the Steelers, 49ers, and Cowboys have

more. As recently as 2008, Giants fans had doubts that Eli Manning would propel himself into a top quarterback. Five seasons later, Eli is a top-five quarterback, a notch below Brady, Brees, and Rodgers. The odd thing is that with all their defensive starters returning and the core of their offense intact, Las Vegas has 10 teams listed ahead of the Giants as Super Bowl favorites. Maybe not so odd when one considers that the Giants have never won a playoff game the season after winning a Super Bowl. In 2008, the Giants were 7-2 at home, the two losses coming to the Philadelphia Eagles, with the latter ending their season in the first round of the playoffs. Frankly, that’s the way the Giants have always preferred it; a lack of respect seems to keep this group motivated. Meantime, the guys in green have tried to say everything and anything to prove they deserve more respect. Rex Ryan’s first two seasons somewhat backed up his big words. But last season was a humbling experience for all involved. The Jets wrapped up 2011 at 8-8, well short of their head coach’s blabber. Since then, we’ve seen Ryan tame his tongue, while the most talked about backup QB in the history of the NFL came to town. Still the offense struggled mightily

in the preseason. But the Jets will tell you they’re hiding their “Tebow packages” to surprise teams in the regular season. The real surprise will be if the team can manage a record above .500. It seems to me that the coaching staff and players have an overabundance of confidence considering how last season ended and this preseason played out. While every team in the NFL is trying to figure out how to exploit the new rules to benefit their passing game, the Jets are focused on establishing a ground-and-pound running game. That style of play is becoming more extinct with each season. At a time when the USPS is nearly bankrupt because everyone is sending emails, the Jets are buying stamps and licking envelopes. As another great summer on the East End wraps up, the consolation prize is the beginning of football season. The New York Giants take the first step to a potential repeat tonight against Dallas. The Jets open up Sunday against a muchimproved Buffalo Bills team. I wouldn’t be surprised if only one of these teams is still in the playoff hunt once the leaves are down on the scrub oaks. Stripers Finally Beginning To Show Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean Keeper fluke in the bay are getting harder to come by but the amount of shorts will keep the rod bent. The bigger fish continue to come up on jigs from the skinny water. The blues are chasing the huge amounts of bait throughout the bay. Early mornings and evenings will give you a good shot at these cocktail sized fish. The huge blues are on the inlet’s bottom with fish to 12 pounds in the mix. Hearing more about the kingfish and small seabass being caught lately by the
flukers, hopefully this is a sign of good things to come. Some striped bass are falling for the live baits drifted in the inlet on the night tides but still slow. Clam chummers have picked away at a few bass as well.

Playing Weekly Fantasy Football The fastest growing fantasy product on the market is the new weekly games, wherein you choose a whole new team each week and play against other competitors for a cash prize. These games are almost always involve a salary cap, meaning you can’t just simply pick the best players to be on your team – you have to come up with some lesser known players who you anticipate will have a productive game that week. First of all, a couple caveats --
there is money involved, and the regulars who play the game have gotten very good. Start by playing in some of the smaller leagues that only cost a few dollars, and if you find yourself getting consistently beaten, walk away – this game isn’t for you. Two other factors have paramount importance – injuries and the weather. You must be certain every one of your picks actually plays – if someone is injured and may not play, don’t pick him. Also, check the weather for all outdoor games

before picking your players. Here are some value plays for Fanduel, in which you pick nine position players whose combined salaries are $60,000 or less. At quarterback, the premier players go for between $9300 and $9900. The good players differ on what strategy to use – some will say always grab a top-ranked quarterback, while others search for a bargain. Among the elite QBs, I like Tom Brady this week: he plays at Tennessee, and the game figures to be a shootout. The Titans QB, Jake Locker, may be a value play – his salary is only $6100. You pick two running backs – the marquee running backs go for $8500 to $9200 (keep in mind you don’t really put up the money). LeSean McCoy ($8700) figures to have a big game against Cleveland. Toby Gerhart, at $5400,

is a value play if Adrian Peterson is still recuperating from offseason surgery. Another viable selection would be Darren McFadden for Oakland, who is an injury risk but has looked good this summer. Each team starts three wide receivers; Calvin Johnson (Megatron) is of course, the highest salary at $8400. I like Julio Jones against Kansas City for $7200, Wes Welker for New England ($7300) and Margues Colston of the Saints, a real bargain at $$6600. The Tight Ends peak at $7600. Aaron Hernandez, at $6500, is a value play because he sometimes gets goal line carries. If you choose Brady and Welker as well, be forewarned you are going all in on the Patriots -- if they don’t have a potent air attack Sunday you’ll lose for sure -- on the other hand, if they go off you’ll have an excellent chance of winning. Fred Davis of Washington is a value pick at $5400– the Redskins play the Saints and figure to throw the ball a lot. David Akers set records for scoring by a kicker last year – might as well ride him to see if he’s still hot. As for choosing a defensive team, it usually boils down to how much salary space you have. By the way, Dallas and The Giants play for real tonight. Football 2012 is upon us.
