HIFF Stalwarts Expected To Garner Oscar Nominations Boyhood, Birdman, Still Alice. By Emily Toy and Miles X. Logan

And so it begins. The countdown to the Academy Awards started on Sunday night as the Golden Globes were broadcast. Nominations for the big prize -- Oscar -- will be announced tomorrow morning. If the Golden Globes are any indication, the Hamptons International Film Festival Class of 2014 will be remembered as blue chip crop – the star-studded affair

was filled with HIFF alumni. In the forefront was Julianne Moore, who was in town for the festival. She earned a Globe for her performance in Still Alice, which was the closing night feature in Southampton. Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher) was interviewed during the festival and is expected to garner an Oscar nod. Ditto Bill Murray, whose film, St. Vincent, was the opener at the

HIFF in East Hampton. In fact Murray, who was at the Golden Globes Sunday night, frequented several local pubs and did several interviews during the HIFF. The Independent has proved to be an extremely accurate forecaster of Oscar nominations– having tabbed about 95 percent over the past dozen years. Richard Linklater’s coming of age classic Boyhood has emerged as the favorite to win the Best Picture Oscar, and Linklater is odds-on to take home the Best Director statue. His innovative film charts the life of a boy as he grows up – literally. It was shot over a 12-year period. Birdman, featuring an inspired performance by Sunday night’s

winner Michael Keaton (Best Actor in a Comedy), is expected to be nominated in numerous categories including Best Movie, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor (Edward Norton) and Best Director (Alejandro González Iñárritu). Birdman was a featured film at HIFF. The category that could be this year’s most competitive is Best Actor. Our experts predict Keaton to win, and the film itself to lead the Oscar parade with numerous statues. Eddie Redmayne (portraying Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) are two others sure to grab nominations. Redmayne took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama. The two remaining slots are a toss up. Count on seeing one, if not both, Academy favs Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) nominated. Newcomer David Oyelowo is getting a lot of buzz for his role in Selma, but it’s Steve Carell’s role in Foxcatcher that could throw a monkey wrench in the equation. Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel) is a long shot. Continued on Page 19.

There is no interest paid on balances of $0-$2,499. APYs disclosed effective as of January 6, 2015. APYs may be changed at any time at the Bank’s discretion. There is a minimum of $2,500 required to open the Apple Bank BONUS Savings account. $2,500 minimum daily balance is required to avoid $10 monthly maintenance fee. Fees may reduce earnings. Funds used to open this account cannot be from an existing Apple Bank account. Maximum deposit amount is $1,000,000 per household. **Special bonus feature: A .25% simple interest rate bonus will be paid on each anniversary date of account opening on the lowest balance for that year (anniversary date to anniversary date). No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. The bonus interest is calculated on the lowest balance on deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus works: Assume an account is opened on January 12, 2015 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on July 12, 2015. No other withdrawals are made prior to the January 12, 2016 anniversary date. The low balance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on January 12, 2016.

THE ITALIAN “FOOTBALL” WEDDING

My cold’s a lot better, thank you, but I’m taking this week off and running a column I wrote a few years ago. But in the meantime I want all my Obama-can-do-no-wrong liberal friends to please write me and tell me why Obama skipped going to Paris to join 40 world leaders to take a stand against Islamic terrorism and instead stayed in the White House to honor the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs. I say if Obama “the clueless” truly wanted to “lead from behind” he would have honored the New York Knicks. I attended a wonderful wedding a few years ago near Sarasota, Florida. It was perfect. The bride and bridegroom were young and handsome and very much in love. The ceremony was beautiful; the speeches were short, tasteful and to the point. It was, in a word, civilized. So civilized that as the couple exchanged vows in front of a handsome, “right out of central casting” Episcopal pastor, I started to drift off, thinking about the wild wacky weddings of my youth. When I was a young kid, the Italians in my old “Gravesend Avenue U” neighborhood were at the bottom rung of the economic ladder. The men worked on the

HAIM MISRAHI @

docks or drove trucks; the women cooked and raised children. For many, attending a wedding was the social event of the year and, if the truth were known, Italians in those days were much more comfortable attending funerals than weddings because one could cover the lags in conversation at a funeral by commenting on how good the dead person looked laid out in a casket. One could kneel, make the Sign of the Cross and not say a word to anyone, feigning that you were so saddened by the death that you couldn’t talk. Weddings were different. To begin with, we were a fairly inarticulate group, and at a wedding you had to be happy and talk, and what could you say besides “the bride looks beautiful.” As a boy I attended any number of “arranged” weddings of brides who were so homely that even the giant plaster saints in the church averted their eyes when the bride came down the aisle. The early weddings I went to were called “football” weddings. They were held in a local catering hall and since money was a consideration (we didn’t have any), the main source of nourishment was pre-made sandwiches wrapped in wax paper consisting of Swiss cheese or ham or salami or provolone or prosciutto.

The sandwiches were set up on two tables on each side of the catering hall and as the guests started to jam the room, the sandwiches would be grabbed up with a vengeance. If the catering hall employee manning one table saw his table was running out of prosciutto sandwiches he would yell to the guy manning the table across the room, “Hey Jimmy, give me a dozen ‘proshoot.’” Jimmy would grab a bunch of prosciutto sandwiches and then, with the deep passing skill of Eli Manning, he would literally hurl each sandwich in a tight spiral pass over the heads of the guests right into the arms of his partner. Thus the name “football” wedding. Of course, just like in football, interceptions were a problem. People not satisfied with the amount of meat or cheese in their sandwich would intercept a sandwich or two as it arched across the room, discard the bread and build a super-size sandwich. Then there was the “kids” problem. Italians would consider it an insult if the host had said, “Please leave the kids at home.” First of all, there wasn’t anybody at home to leave them with. So it would be chaos. Some families of 12 children would crowd the hall diving for sandwiches. Little kids would be sliding all over the waxed floors and knocking over elderly relatives. People would be slipping on loose slices of salami on the floor and kids older than eight would get drunk and throw up from sneaking drinks behind their parents’ backs. Then, in time, my neighborhood moved up into the catered affair wedding and that brought about its own trials. The family had to deal

with my Aunt Rosie. My Aunt Rosie was a bit of a “klepto.” I’m not using her real name because I’m still afraid of my Uncle Tony. The fact is Aunt Rosie was a delightful woman whom I haven’t seen in 40 years, but I remember that at family weddings she would drink eight or nine Manhattans and start looking for something to steal from the catering hall or restaurant. Aunt Rosie’s biggest score was at my cousin Mary’s wedding, when she downed a record tenth Manhattan and decided to steal a coffee urn. I was 15 at the time and my mother came up to me and said, “Your Aunt Rosie is drunk and she’s decided to steal a coffee pot.” “That’s not so bad, Mom,” I said. “People get silly and take these tiny single-serving coffee pots.” My mother giggled. “It’s not one of the small pots they have at our table.” She pointed to a waiter’s station and said, “It’s that big silver one that holds 60 cups of coffee that the waiters are using.” “That’s bad,” I said. “It’s even worse,” my mother said, shaking her head in righteous disapproval while warming up to the heist with a big smile. “The pot is filled with boiling hot coffee. I’m scared she’s going to burn herself.” Well, not only did my Aunt Rosie not burn herself, but also she managed to put her big, black woolen coat over the giant urn and then she triumphantly carried it past the unsuspecting catering hall staff and all my snickering relatives right out the front door. No wonder they called them the good old days. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

New Push For Trader Joe’s By Kitty Merrill

It’s not a new request. Folks have been petitioning the parent company to bring a Trader Joe’s to the East End for several years now. During the initial phases of planning board review of the old Plitt Ford property in Wainscott in 2012, the owner wanted the site, soon to be home to a Home Goods store, to house a Trader Joe’s. He subsequently said it was hard to convince executives that such a store had year round viability. This time around, one supporter of the notion is using social media in an effort to flood corporate offices with requests for a store in

Riverhead. Amy Kirwin of Hampton Bays created a Facebook “event” asking her friends, and their friends, and their friends, to make the location request on Monday. As of Monday afternoon, 1700 people had been invited to the event with 4100 people committing to petition Trader Joe’s. Kirwin grew up in California and always shopped at Trader Joe’s. She did the same when she lived in the city, noting, “I’ve always been a devotee.” Upon relocating to The Hamptons, she said she was “really surprised” that considering the size of the population, there wasn’t an outlet nearby. “Perhaps if they get

barraged with emails in one day, they might finally realize how much it is needed and wanted,” she wrote on her event page, which is entitled “Collective Plea to Trader Joe’s to Open Riverhead, NY location.” The company’s website has a prompt for location requests. In fact, it encourages them, stating, “If you have a recommendation for an area that you think would be a good fit, please let us know . . . There are no guarantees but being wanted matters to us.” Kirwin includes the link on her events page. in Southern California as Pronto Market, with convenience stores similar to 7-Eleven. The first Trader Joe’s with its signature island motif opened in 1969 in Pasadena, California. In 2009 Consumer Reports ranked it the second best supermarket in the nation (after Wegman’s). An article on the Business Insider website reported Trader Joe’s sells a “whopping” $1734 per square foot, twice as much per square foot as Whole Foods. Eighty percent of items sold at the stores are Trader Joe’s own products, so the grocer can sell them at a lower price. Business Insider also noted an “aggressive expansion plan” that will open 38 stores in the next year. Pe t i t i o n e r s w h o u s e d t h e website’s location link received email replies that read, “Aloha and thank you for your interest in our stores. Emails have been flooding in with suggestions for new locations in neighborhoods all over the U.S. We love that!”

Town workers will hook into the existing system on the course, as was envisioned when plans were made for a $24 million upgrade to the town’s sewer system. The county is contributing to the project. Enforcement Awareness

By Kitty Merrill

Much like local police offer weekly reports to the press, the Town of East Hampton Ordinance Enforcement Department has begun disseminating a weekly activity summary. “We wanted to enhance the public’s and the media’s awareness of our activities,” town Director of Code Enforcement Betsy Bambrick explained. The department crafts quarterly reports, but they don’t provide the same kind of snapshot, she added.

From January 1 through last Thursday, the department handled 29 new cases. Twelve of the calls were the result of patrol observation and another dozen were precipitated by public complaint. Five more stemmed from referrals from other departments. It’s no surprise that housing complaints topped the list in terms of volume. A baker’s dozen of those cases came in, 10 via patrol, two from the public and one through departmental referral. Violation of the town zoning code was the

second most frequent type of complaint recorded, with seven listed; the department responded to five complaints related to environmental issues. Six notices of violation and one stop work order were issued. Four cases were closed as “unfounded,” meaning the violation enforcers were called to investigate doesn’t exist. Five cases were closed through voluntary compliance – “That’s the goal,” Bambrick said. Two housing cases were closed, resulting in 13 total counts in court.

Fire “Out Of Control” East Hampton Fire Department Chief Richard Osterberg said this week that a fire that destroyed a house at 56 Hedges Bank Drive was out of control by the time local firefighters arrived. Some neighbors had questioned the response time on the New Year’s Day blaze, but Osterberg said his department – and neighboring departments – moved swiftly. “The call was dispatched at 12:45 of a structure fire and I was in my car [in Springs]; I could see the smoke column,” Osterberg related. The chief sprung into action immediately, calling for a Rapid Response team from Sag Harbor and mobilizing local firefighters. Two engines and a tanker from the East Hampton Fire Department arrived by 12:58, Osterberg said. All units were on hand by 1:05 PM. Though there are fire hydrants in the Landfall neighborhood of Northwest Woods, tankers were needed to supply additional water. Preliminary indications are the blaze started in a garbage can that contained fireplace embers and spread with the aide of a stiff wind. “These newer houses go up fast,” the chief said. The property is owned by Merle Hoffman, the founder of the nation’s first abortion clinic, which prompted some concern – the FBI has looked into the matter. CR 39 Land Uses Plan Adopted By Emily Toy

As The Independent went to press yesterday, the Southampton Town Board was expected to adopt the County Road 39 Corridor Land Use Plan at its general meeting. After completing several public hearings in September, October, November and December last year, revisions were made to the draft. In an effort to alleviate severe traffic congestion, starting in 2007, the Suffolk County Department of Public Works widened CR 39 within the existing right of way to provide two travel lanes in each direction with a two-way center left turn lane between Sunrise Highway and North Sea Road. Later on a second project was completed, widening and resurfacing CR 39 and North Sea Road to Montauk Highway to provide two eastbound lanes, one westbound lane and a center two way left turn lane. As a result of the newly constructed traffic patterns, town officials saw an opportunity to develop existing large and underutilized land parcels along the corridor for area improvements, prompting the town board to prepare a land use planning study. Design guidelines and access management plans were then drafted as part of the study in conjunction with the Department of Transportation, Planning Board, and Municipal Works. The point of the study was to ensure that CR 39 and surrounding areas embody the vision of the gateway corridor with commercial

concentrations instead of commercial sprawl, managed access to and from the roadway, and visual upgrades for the entire CR 39 corridor. “The objective is to make the highway business areas productive, attractive and consistent with the town’s resort image,” according to a resolution adopting the land use plan. The study prepared for the town board’s consideration looked at existing road conditions of CR 39 itself as well as adjacent roadways in order to recognize any recommendations for future growth, economic development, and environmental protection in a

manner that protects and enhances community character. The land use plan was revised throughout the public hearing process to address the issues and concerns surrounding the project. After due study and deliberation the Suffolk County Planning Commission approved and adopted a staff report indicating the plan “is a well-conceived and developed template for restoring the corridors low trip generating uses, commercial appeal and visual aesthetic as the ‘gateway’ to the Hamptons and South Fork and commended the town for completing this part of the planning for this county roadway corridor.”

RICK’S SPACE Things You Find In A Refrigerator This was a category on “Family Feud” that elicited a number of hilarious responses. It’s a generational thing. The teenage girl yelled out “soy milk” and grandma just looked at her quizzically. Let’s face it – grandma doesn’t know what soy milk is. In fact, grandma doesn’t know what soy is. However, had the category been “Things You Put On Chinese Food,” she would have nailed it. When I was a little kid in Sag Harbor we didn’t even call it the “refrigerator,” everyone called the big white thing in the back of the kitchen “The Ice Box.” That’s because for years that is exactly what it was – a box with a big chunk of ice in it that was delivered every few days. My Aunt Adele, while she was still a teenager, got grandma and grandpa their first refrigerator, buying it on a payment plan from Spitz Appliances, which was located where Fishers is now. Cilli’s Farm was right down the

block from our house on Long Island Avenue and Bayview. Vitalli Cilli would bring the milk right into the house and put it in the icebox. It had the heavy cream floating on the top of the bottle. My big brother would infuriate all of us by drinking all the cream before anyone else woke up. He was 300 pounds by the time he was 12. When I first got married Dominic Cilli, who had taken the farm over from his father, would also put the milk right in our refrigerator. Once he came back at 5 PM and handed me a package. He said he had noticed the fridge was almost empty so he brought over some chopped meat. I made a great meatloaf but couldn’t eat a thing – it had been a cow earlier that morning. I like my chopped meat in packages covered in cellophane wrap that I buy at the supermarket. I don’t need to hear the damn stuff mooing while I cook it – it’s udderly disgusting. Let’s think about items found in most refrigerators: eggs, butter,

mayo, mustard, juice, etc. are pretty much universal, I would guess. Grandma guessed “pickled herring” on the show. Wrong. Little Billy answered “Yogurt” and he was right. “Leftovers” was a good answer. “Fruit” was wrong. It’s a good thing I wasn’t a contestant, because I would have answered “Uncle Anthony’s ring finger” because it was in our icebox for years. It seems he got it caught on barbed wire and it ripped clean off. Papa said they could sew it back on so he put it in a jar filled with formaldehyde and there it stayed for about 10 years. Grandma is lucky she didn’t eat it because after a while it started looking like pickled herring. Since papa had a chicken coop we always had chicken in the fridge – chicken stew, chicken soup, dead chickens, dying chickens, you name it. One of the coolest things my brother ever did was hard boil a dozen eggs and put them back on the door of the fridge, which in those days had little holders built in for the raw eggs. It was hilarious watching my aunt try to make scrambled eggs the next morning. Papa always kept bait in the icebox, which grandma thought was sardines – no harm, no foul. There was a stretch in the sixties when we had margarine instead of butter. The TV commercials convinced Mom that it was healthier for us than real

butter, so we put it on everything from toast to Uncle Anthony’s finger to the dead chickens. One brand was “I Swear Its Not Butter.” We never did ask, “What the hell is it?” A modern day refrigerator may well find guacamole and salsa dip; back in the day Ricky Riccardo was the only person to stock these. Nowadays, many of us have hummus. In the sixties only Danny Thomas had it and Marlo refused to eat it. Parents magazine provides a list of “healthy” items to keep in the fridge. One is jarred tomato sauce. Papa Forcucci would never have allowed that; even Uncle Anthony’s finger probably would have pushed it off the shelf – that and the whole grain pasta. Another recommended staple is “whole grain cereal.” When we were kids the only whole grain we had in our cereal was sugar. Oh yeah, the magazine also recommends couscous, presumably in case Gandhi drops by. Grandma used Mason jars to store fruits and veggies all winter in the pantry. Papa made his own wine, stored in wooden drums down the dank basement. By the way, the number one answer to the question “Things You Find In A Refrigerator” was “Beer.” Some things never change.

A Welcome Respite The debate rages about the long-term effect of falling oil prices and what it means to the economy. The prices for crude oil – under $50 a barrel - are at a seven-year low. In Russia, the massive and sudden decrease in price has wreaked havoc with the economy there. Russia is a large supplier of oil, and should it cut production to level off prices it risks losing customers to OPEC, the oil-producing giant that is a conglomerate of Middle Eastern countries.

Stifling The Press Dear Editor, We join the rest of the world in mourning the brave staff of the magazine Charlie Hebdo, gunned down by religious fanatics for defending freedom of the press. Like every member of the Fourth Estate, the raid on the headquarters of Charlie Hebdo hit especially hard at our offices. Journalists, like satirists and news commentators, express their views for a living. It is part of their job. But in a free society all of us have the right to speak freely, and those who disagree have every right to counter. Debate is healthy, and the to and fro is often provocative and always productive. It is important to remember these freedoms extend to artists and writers alike. Whether it is Mapplethorpe or Christo or some other controversial movie or book, the whip of censorship is often cracked in this country to this very day. When reflecting on the terror in France it is time to remind ourselves that in America we must not only be tolerant, but be fully inclusive as well.

laws that impose criminal penalties on investigators seeking to expose animal abuses and safety violations in factory farms. According to an Associated Press report in yesterday’s papers, four members of an animal protection organization were charged with violating Utah’s ag-gag law. They sought to document the daily transport of thousands of pigs from the infamous Circle Four factory farm in Cedar City (UT) to the Farmer John slaughterhouse in Los Angeles. Ag-gag laws are clearly unconstitutional and are being challenged in federal courts. Assaults on press freedom need to be confronted wherever they rear their ugly

In Venezuela, the effect has been nothing short of disastrous. Lower prices bring less profit, and the nation’s economy, suffering from runaway inflation, is teetering on a major recession and the political instability sure to follow. OPEC used to control production to ensure stable prices. Saudi Arabia, its biggest and most influential member, has insisted on staying the course, even as the price continues to drop. We can be sure that decision has little to do with what is best for America and everything to do with what’s best for OPEC. With ISIS raging a determined battle for the hearts and minds of Islam the last thing the moderate Independent/Jessica Mackin Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia want is political unrest. Remember, America may be vilified in those parts, but as long as we are dependent on the oil we will keep revolts that threaten the OPEC oil supplies in check. The lower prices mean everyone in the industry suffers. OPEC has unlimited reserves and can thus handle the lessening profits for an extended time. Better still, it flattens the wheels of a dangerous competitor – the United States; our burgeoning shale oil and gas industry can not function when oil is this cheap. We simply cannot afford to produce fuel at these prices. It may also provide Keystone Pipeline opponents ammunition - it makes little sense to pipe the oil all the way from Canada to Houston as things stand now. Those issues aside, the fact is it feels awfully good to fill up our vehicles and still get change from a fifty-dollar bill. And with the recent cold front, it’s gratifying to know we won’t need second mortgages to keep our houses warm.

Less Safe Dear Rick, In response to the assertion last week that the “shutoff” of commercial lighting in the middle of the night will produce a “ghost town” by the Chamber of Commerce: FACT: We have to do something intelligent about energy waste to reduce climate change or else we will all be under water.

FACT: The “City Of Lights,” Paris, enacted a law that commercial buildings have to shut off their night lighting when closed late at night. So should we. FACT: The commercial district in the Village and all the building facades are lit all night anyway from adjacent street lighting which is left “on” all night long. FACT: Excessively bright lighting adjacent to the roadway from stores interferes with night vision because it distracts drivers’ eyes from the roadway, making it less safe to drive and walk in the Village. FACT: Most of the mom-and-pop stores (what’s left of them) turn off their lights Continued on Page 14.

China Syndrome Dear Editor, According to Forbes Magazine November 24, 2014 issue, which I paraphrase below, since the year 2000 Chinese companies have made almost 900 purchases of U.S. assets worth $43 billion. China’s billionaires are gobbling up U.S. companies at a record pace. Most disturbing are the implications of these purchases by Chinese Communist companies on our national security. Ralls/ Sany purchased four wind farms in Oregon near a Navy weapons system base. Wanda Group purchased 342 movie theaters previously owned by AMC Entertainment. WH Group bought Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork processor. Lenovo purchased Motorola and part of IBM’s server business. “In five years China’s direct investment in the United States has grown from $2 billion a year to $14 billion.” We should limit the purchase of U.S. companies by the Chinese Communist regime, and probably restrict the ownership of U.S. companies to less than 30 percent of outstanding shares of stock. But at 3 AM after reading three books, I’ll think, why did I drink that cup of coffee so late? Don Reese I don’t drink coffee. I’ve tried it but I just don’t like it. I’m a tea drinker. I like all kinds of tea. I’m not fussy about what kind it is. I drink it hot and I drink a lot of iced tea too. I usually drink about four cups or glasses of it a day. Carlson Jacobs I do drink coffee. I started drinking it about 10 years ago. I like Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. I get big bags of it from BJ’s and then I make about 10 cups of it in a percolator. That lasts for two or three days. I just reheat it and drink it for the next few days.

Plan Hearing On Tap Drafted by the town’s department of land acquisition and management, the plan lists a budget of $982,164 in expenditures, which represents just under four percent of expected revenue for 2015. P ro po sed expenditures on historic properties comprise the largest segment of draft budget. The Lester/Labrozzi property on North Main Street in East Hampton and Duck Creek Farm on Three Mile Harbor Road in Springs would see some $212,000 each spent. At Lester/Labrozzi the creation of a farmer’s museum will be furthered by the restoration of the barn on site in conjunction with an historic consultant and engineer. The barn will be restored at Duck Creek similarly, with its future eyed as a space for community needs. Another $262,000 is budgeted for the restoration of two studios and the homestead at the Brooks & Park property on Neck Path in Springs. Other work for this coming year includes the demolition of structures on three recently acquired properties at a combined cost of $65,000.

Over a quarter of a billion dollars since its inception in East Hampton alone. Close to 2000 acres, and an estimated 290 parcels preserved (or in contract). Adopted in 1998, the Community Preservation Fund has been frequently lauded as a success. Implemented in 1999 the CPF is a dedicated fund which derives revenue from a two percent tax on most real estate transactions. The money is supposed to be used for the preservation of open space, historic properties and farmlands. Up to 10 percent of the annual revenue may be used for what’s known as “Management and Stewardship.” In the wake of the revelation that disgraced former supervisor Bill McGintee had been siphoning off millions in M&S monies to use for general town operations, a task force formed to clarify exactly how they may be spent. Each year, the five East End towns that have CPFs must hold, by law, hearings on the M&S plan. Tomorrow night East Hampton Town’s 2015 Management and Stewardship Plan is up for discussion.

The pie chart at left shows revenue derived in East Hampton since the Community Preservation Fund was established.

Continued from page 4.

That will leave Bill Murray (St. Vincent) on the outside looking in despite widespread critical acclaim. The usual suspects are sure to be featured in the category for Best Actress, though there may be a newcomer or two in the mix. Four-time nominee Moore should win her first Oscar for her role as a renowned linguistics professor diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s in Still Alice. Academy darlings Reese Witherspoon and Amy Adams are sure to scoop nominations for Wild and Big Eyes, respectively. Scene-stealing Emily Blunt, playing the Baker’s wife in Into the Woods, is a wildcard. Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) and Jennifer Aniston (Cake) are likely to see their first Academy Award nominations this year.

REAL ESTATE

The race for the Best Supporting Actor statue is between Norton (Birdman), Ruffalo (Foxcatcher), and J.K. Simmons (who starred in Whiplash and won on Sunday night). Norton is the favorite but wise guys are betting on Simmons, one of those character actors you’ve seen a million times but still don’t know his name. FYI he’s the Farmers Insurance pitchman on TV. Two-time Best Supporting Actor winner Christoph Waltz (Big Eyes) may get a nomination as could Josh Brolin for Inherent Vice. Veteran character actor Tom Wilkinson is gaining momentum from his latest work in Selma. We’re just covering ourselves by penciling Meryl Streep (Into the Woods) in to the Best Supporting Actress contest. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, the four other nominees will be Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game), Patricia Arquette (Boyhood), and Emma Stone (Birdman). Jessica Chastain

(for either A Most Violent Year or Interstellar) may split her own vote, allowing Laura Dern (Wild) to slip in. Arquette won the Golden Globe. The category of Best Director is sure to pique the interests of film enthusiasts everywhere. Linklater is the favorite for Boyhood. Birdman’s Alejandro Gonzalez Iùårritu is also a shoo-in. After that the waters grow murkier: multiple Oscar winner Clint Eastwood (American Sniper) is likely to be nominated. Ava DuVernay for Selma has a chance to follow Kathryn Bigelow to the podium; she would be only the second female to earn the statue. Gone Girl’s David Fincher is a possibility. Angelina Jolie is a long shot for Unbroken. Which brings us to the big mac daddy of categories: Best Picture. In years past the category included up to 10 pictures, although lately it’s been back to the standard five. There’s talk of having nine nominations this year.

Boyhood, Birdman, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, and Selma are sure things. The Grand Budapest Hotel, Foxcatcher, Nightcrawler, and American Sniper could make the cut as well.

Fund-Raising Effort For Kate Mund By Miles X. Logan

A GoFundMe site has been established for Kate Mund of Amagansett, a self-employed seamstress and single mother who was stricken last fall with an illness that has left her wheelchairbound, without full use of her feet and hands. Kate’s diagnosis is still uncertain, and she needs help with living and medical expenses. Last fall, Kate Mund began experiencing flu-like symptoms and was treated for them by her local doctor. When she began to experience weakness and lack of dexterity in her hands and legs, she was sent to a neurologist and for imaging tests. When an MRI

revealed a herniated disc in her neck, she underwent surgery for disc replacement and the insertion of a titanium brace, and was sent to a rehabilitation facility. Her recovery, unfortunately, did not go as expected, and she has been confined to a wheelchair. Just before Christmas, Mund was readmitted to Stony Brook Hospital for more tests and intravenous therapy, as autoimmune diseases were suspected. On Christmas Eve, she was diagnosed by one of her doctors with ALS, and was given a limited time to live. However, as Mund wrote in a message describing her ordeal, “We are not accepting their

diagnosis for so many reasons I couldn’t possibly list them.” Because severe tick-borne diseases can be mistaken for ALS and other ailments, she is continuing her journey toward recovery with upcoming appointments with her neurologist and with an infectious disease doctor specializing in tickborne illness. She has returned home and is feeling stronger. “My hope is to wake up from this nightmare and be able to return to life as it was before September, 2014,” she wrote in her message, in which she thanked all those concerned for their care and support. Mini-Musicals By Kids This Month Students in the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center’s Arts Education Program get their chance to shine on stage this month. This Friday and Saturday nights the program’s young ensemble presents its rendition of the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical Once Upon A Mattress. Kids aged 10 and under will offer an adaptation entitled Once Upon A Mattress G2K. G2K are the call letters for WHBPAC’s ‘Getting to Know’ series designed to introduce young children to musicals, adapting them for young performers. On January 30 and 31 the program’s teen troupe presents Into The Woods. Hot on the heels of the release of the film version, the troupe offers its interpretation of the Tony Award winning musical penned by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, calling their adaptation Into The Woods Junior. Teen Theatre Troupe is the cornerstone of WHBPAC’s unique and innovative Teen Theatre Program. A skill-based program, it focuses on cultivating and honing both acting and vocal techniques while producing a full-length, public performance. In just 15 weeks, teen performers have taken this adaptation of one of Sondheim’s most popular works from script to stage. Showtimes for both performances this month are 7 PM. Tickets are $15.

SPORTS Unbeaten Mariners Move Into First INDEPENDENT

By Rick Murphy

There was tension in the air when the Babylon Panthers took the floor in Southampton gym last Thursday, and with good reason. Two undefeated teams were about to square off. One would leave not only undefeated, but in sole possession of first place in League VII and a leg up on the Suffolk County Class B title. Round One went to the home team – the Mariners dominated the paint and withstood several Babylon rallies to prevail, 59-52. The Mariners broke open a tied game in the third stanza behind the scoring of Isaiah (15) and Israel Johnson (11) but the strength of this team is its five-headed monster: every player can shoot. Nasies Fulford and Zach Cummings each tallied 12. Isaiah Johnson (12) and Fulford combined for 23 rebounds. Cummings had six and Israel Johnson added five.

The next day Southampton moved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the league by busting up Center Moriches, 80-57. Once again the Mariners controlled the boards, with Isaiah Johnson (17 rebounds) and Fulford (13) particularly effective. The pair also combined for 44 points as the locals, playing at home, broke open the game early and coasted. Cummings added 17 for the winners. Southampton isn’t the only East End team undefeated. During the previous century no rivalry sizzled like the fire felt at a Southampton/Bridgehampton game. Many times, the games had to be moved to Southampton College to accommodate the overflow crowds. Police were often called in to help keep tempers in check. Well, Bridgehampton is back in a big way, with a brand new star player and a deep and talented starting five that can play with anyone in Suffolk. Tuesday their new star, junior Charles Manning Jr., exploded in the

galaxy like a supernova. When the Bees’ destruction of defending Class D champ Shelter Island was complete Manning had 34 points to go with a dozen boards and a handful of assists and steals. Manning is eighth in the county with a 21 point per game scoring average. And there’s a lot more fire power on the court with him. Josh Lamison, who hit for 50 in a game this year, added 16 against the Islanders and grabbed a ton of rebounds. Silky smooth point guard Tylik Furman added 11. The rivalry has heated to the point that the two coaches, Bridgehampton’s Carl Johnson and Southampton’s Herm Lamison, are probably ruing the day they scheduled a scrimmage game later this month. The fans have already taken the level of trash talking into overtime mode, and there’s talk

of canceling the game, which won’t count in the standings. The two teams could square off if the Bees take the Class D title and advance through the County B/C game, a distinct possibility. For its part, Southampton would need to win the B title. Then the two rivals would reacquaint themselves in the County B/C/D game with a shot at the County Small Schools title on the line. In other local action, East Hampton is in the thick of things sporting a 2-2 mark in League VI after pummeling Mt. Sinai 65-35 Friday. Bonac lacks inside height but has a strong perimeter game. On this night Kyle McKee notched 15 points, Regis O’Neil hit for a season high 13, and Brenden Kennedy-Gay added 12. Gay, at 20.4 is the county’s 10th highest scorer. Kevin Fee also hit double digits (11). Pierson, 2-4 in League VIII, knocked off Ross School 55-42 Friday behind the shooting of Sean Sloane (19 points). Southold (5-1) was upended by Stony Brook 57-53 Friday.

Lady Baymen Rolling Along By Rick Murphy

It’s been an off year for East End girls high school basketball, but don’t tell Hampton Bays. The Baygirls are 10-1 overall, and atop the League VII standings with a 4-0 mark. Friday they traveled to Mattituck – never a fun place to play - and took apart the Lady Tuckers (31) with first place on the line. To say senior stalwart and allstate candidate Alex Fotopoulis was on fire would be an understatement. Fotopoulis scorched the losers, tallying 32 points and dishing off for five more buckets. Teammate Hannah Reed added 16. Fotopoulis, by the way, is Suffolk’s fourth leading scorer with 27.8 points per

game. Mattituck fell behind by 14 in the first half and fell part in the third stanza as Hampton Bays opened up a 25-point lead. Katie Hoag was a bright spot with 17 points. Riverhead is doing just fine, thank you. The Lady Waves are 3-0 in League III after besting Smithtown West 52-43 Thursday. Sam Dunn had the hot hand, exploding for 21 points to go with her 11 rebounds. Dezarae Brown added seven for the locals. On January 6 Riverhead edged North Babylon on the loser’s court, 64-59. Dunn went off for 32 points, Faith Johnson DeSlivia added 12 and Brown contributed 10. Dunn also grabbed nine rebounds, and recorded seven steals, as Riverhead outscored the home team 7-2 in overtime. Pierson/Bridgehampton always seems to find its way into the playoffs. The Lady Whalers are currently 3-1 in League VIII and 4-5 overall. On Thursday the locals knocked off Wyandanch at home, 57-42. It was a coming out party for Nia Dawson, who notched a career high 31 points and added five assists. Among other East End teams, Westhampton is 1-1 in League V and 5-5 overall. East Hampton is struggling in League VI with a 0-4 mark (1-8 overall). Southampton is 0-4, 0-10 overall.
