For eight years it’s been our TV show, a weekly TV series based right here on the East End. But all good things come to an end, and “Royal Pains” will air its final episode today. Fear not though – thanks to the magic of On Demand and syndication, the show will be around for years to come. When USA network television viewers first met Dr. Hank Lawson (played by Mark Feuerstein), he was unfairly relieved from his position in the Emergency Room of a prestigious Manhattan hospital after a wealthy benefactor died in his care. Dr. Hank accepts an offer to tend to a well-heeled patient in the Hamptons (aren’t they all) and the rest is history. Eight seasons, several trips to exotic locales such as Hong Kong, Budapest, and France, and 104 episodes later, the Hamptons’ “concierge doctor” takes down his shingle, but not before “Royal Pains” creator Andrew Lenchewski and fellow executive producer Michal Rauch manage to tie up any loose ends. “We were very fortunate, because after season six USA let us know that season eight would be the last. It gave us the opportunity to complete the stories and say a proper goodbye to our long time fans. And instead of an end, I think the storylines give each of our characters a new beginning,” stated Lenchewski during a telephone
interview. To divulge any specifics would be a disservice to the nearly six million fans expected to tune into the finale. When initially scouting locations, Lenchewski only had to stroll down Main Street in Southampton to know this would be home for the beloved drama series. “We were really blessed. The residents welcomed us with open arms, even when we had to temporarily stop traffic or make them walk on the opposite side of the street. “We fostered many lasting relationships. It’s impossible to cite one or two incidences that stand out in our memories, because there are so many,” Rauch said. “The residents repeatedly told us how proud they were of the show. To us, these were magical encounters.” Aside from The Hamptons, “Royal Pains” took full advantage of scenic spots on Long Island. For example, several scenes were shot on the bay side of Point Lookout, while other places included Northport Village in the Town of Huntington, Old Westbury Gardens, Freeport’s Nautical Mile, and Oyster Bay Town Hall, which was transformed into the entrance of the Hamptons Heritage Hospital emergency room, while several beach scenes were filmed at West Neck Beach in Huntington. Doubling as the Hamptons’ home of Boris, the Russian nobleman, who offers his guesthouse to Hank and brother Evan, is Oheka Castle CONTINUED ON PAGE 14.

ONCE UPON A MATTRESS
This is an old column I wrote years ago. My ability to communicate hasn’t improved since then.
What are the three most overused words in marriage? No, silly, not “I love you.” The three words are “We must communicate.” Talk to any psychiatrist or psychologist or marriage counselor and they’ll keep repeating the same word. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. You must communicate with each other. Tell each other exactly what you feel. Now I must admit I am lousy at communicating what I feel. Most men are. Being Italian, I’m a particularly terrible communicator. I come from a long line of bad communicators. My great uncle Louie was married to my aunt Mary for 47 years and no one ever heard them talk. Uncle Louie burped more than he talked. Aunt Mary took each burp as a communication from her Louie that she was a great cook. Now here is where my failure to communicate really cost me a lot of sleep. A while ago, my wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, and I spent three days in Los Angeles. The hotel was great, and every morning Judy would wake up
raving about the mattress. “Best night’s sleep I’ve had in months!” she would gush. “Did you have a great night’s sleep, too?” Now, this was my chance to communicate by saying no, the mattress was too soft. Instead I smiled and said yes. What a mistake. I could have pointed out that perhaps her great night’s sleep was not because of the mattress. Maybe the fact that we went out every night and she drank wine contributed to her sound sleep. And then there’s the fact that there is a three-hour difference between New York and L.A., so that when she went to bed (or passed out) at 1 AM in L.A., it was really 4 AM in New York, and when she woke up refreshed at 9 AM, it was noon in New York. And maybe I could have communicated by pointing out that for what they were charging us for this one frigging room (more per night than I paid for a year’s rent in my first apartment in Brooklyn), the bed had better be comfortable. But I was silent. Then on our second night in L.A. Judy informed me that the pillows were stuffed with goose feathers, and she thought I was allergic to

goose feathers, but since I obviously wasn’t, now we could have goose feather pillows. Did I try to communicate and tell her I had a postnasal drip every night in L.A.? No, I made a stupid joke that if I knew years ago that I wasn’t allergic to feathers I would have married a duck. So I came home two weeks ago and there on my bed was a new mattress. It was a monstrosity. It was the biggest mattress I’ve ever seen. It was the King Kong of mattresses. I’m six feet tall (make that 5’11” due to age shrinkage). This mattress came up to my chest – almost to my neck. I tried to climb up on it and that was impossible, it was too high. I huffed and I puffed and there was no way I could climb up it. I finally took a running leap and clung to the bed and inched my way onto the top. It took 10 minutes of struggling until I was on the bed – out of breath and exhausted. “How do you like our new mattress?” Judy called out to me. “I got it just for you. It’s the same great mattress they had at the hotel in L.A.” Now this was the perfect chance for me to communicate by saying, “Thank you, dear, it was good of you to think of me, but this mattress sucks.” But did I communicate that? No, sir. I said, “It’s wonderful.” I didn’t sleep that night; the mattress had the firmness of a waterbed. Once I was able to climb on I could never get out of bed until the next morning. Turning over on my side was a ten-minute exertion. Every bone in my body ached. The television set at the foot of the bed was partially blocked by the mattress and I was perched so high I felt I was
IN THE NEWS
looking at the baseball game on my television from a skybox. The worst came the second night when I lay in bed like a beached whale and tried to read but I felt like I had a fever – I was burning up. I was sure I had a fever but I couldn’t face getting out of the bed and finding a thermometer. Then I felt something brush against my head – it was a lampshade. That’s when I realized the bed was so, so high that I had my head stuck in a lamp that used to be three feet away from my head in my old bed. Now my head was inches away from a hot bulb. On the third night Judy, tired of hearing me struggling and muttering, got me a bench to climb on. That cut the time it took me to crawl into bed by at least five minutes. But every time she asked me how I liked her gift, the mattress from hell, I would say I liked it. So I went one week without sleeping because the mattress was so soft I felt like I had fallen into quicksand and the more I moved the deeper I sank. One day my daughter Jessie breathlessly told me about a friend of hers who had climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. I greeted the news by muttering under my breath, “Big deal. I’ll be more impressed if he can climb my frigging nightmare mattress.” So I suffered until the other day when, out of nowhere, Judy turned to me and said, “Getting the new mattress was a disaster. I want you to know I don’t like it. I’m going to get rid of it.” I almost sobbed with joy. Chalk up mine as another marriage saved by communication. Montauk residents were up in arms last week. No, it wasn’t about drunken hipsters. No, it wasn’t about shark hunting. No, it wasn’t about loud music or beach litter. It was about signs. As part of the state’s I Love NY campaign forwarded by Governor Andrew Cuomo, state officials put up billboard-sized signs at the dock area. They look more suited to a Nassau County exit on the LIE. W i t h i n a d a y, E a s t Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell was fielding complaints and calling upon the governor to take them down on Facebook. Assemblyman Fred Thiele reportedly said his office was also inundated with complaints about the signs. So, too, was East Hampton Town Highway Superintendent Steve Lynch. He noted dryly, “If you’re on West Lake Drive and you have to be told you’re in New York, you probably shouldn’t be driving.” Within a day of its appearance, a graffitist made an editorial comment (see above) and the droll folks at the Dock invited people to “Visit Montauk and enjoy our newly installed scenic road signs.”

Day kicks off barbecue season, but you don’t have to pack on the pounds packing away classic high fat salads. Check Kim’s Facebook page for a bounty of delicious clean meals. Meanwhile, she’s cleaned up the classic coleslaw recipe and offers a

speedy way to put it together. Start with a bag of coleslaw mix, already pre-shredded, to save a ton of chopping time. Take about a cup of olive oil mayo (maybe less) whisked with the same amount of Greek yogurt, a dash of apple cider vinegar, a dash of water, salt, pepper, and a packet of Splenda (all of this to taste) and that’s it! “I usually add red onion if I have it. You can spice it up with hot sauce or chipotles in adobo if you want. It’s versatile and much healthier than coleslaw made with all mayo,” says Kenney. The half mayo/half yogurt
Still bloated from all the Fourth of July barbecue goodies? Independence
Recent tests performed by SUNY Stony Brook have confirmed new forms of cyanobacteria blooms, commonly known as blue-green algae in Georgica Pond in East Hampton and Wainscott Pond in Wainscott. Other areas affected include Maratooka Pond in Mattituck, Agawam Lake in Southampton, and Mill Pond in Watermill. Due to these recent findings, heath officials are asking residents to not use or swim in the water, and to keep pets and children away from the area. Take extra precautions when around Agawam Lake and Mill Pond as levels of algae and toxins are extremely high. Though blue-green algae are naturally present in lakes and streams in low numbers, they can become abundant, forming blooms mostly typically in shades of green but also in shades of blue-green, yellow, brown or red. They may produce floating scums on the surface of the water or may cause the water to take on paint-like appearance. Contact with water that appears scummy or discolored should be avoided. If you have contact with contaminated water and experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritation of the skin, eyes or throat, or breathing difficulties seek medical attention. To report a suspected algae bloom contact Suffolk County Department of Heath Services Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760. L.F.

strategy works well for carrot salad, too. Here’s my recipe for quick carrot salad: Again, buy the pre-shredded package of carrots to save time. Chop an apple – leave the peel on and pick different types of apples depending on your taste. I’m a huge fan of the Pink Lady. Drain a small can of crushed pineapple in juice (with no added sugar) saving the liquid. Whisk the juice with mayo and yogurt for the dressing. Pour over the carrot and apple, then toss. I add some walnuts for crunch, but pecans are great, too.

Obituary Loretta “Ma” Lynch, 77
Loretta “Ma” Lynch was the youngest of three children, born to Kenneth R. and Nellie A. Wilson, on January 26, 1939 in the Bronx, New York. She had many stories of growing up in the Bronx. Loretta’s family moved to Montauk when she was a teenager and she attended East Hampton High School. Loretta later went on to marry Robert W. Lynch (Bob) on 12/31/1959 and together they raised two sons, Robert W. Lynch III (Bobby) and Stephen K. Lynch. Loretta was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung cancer on May 23 and passed on June 6 at the William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay Florida
with Stephen and her beloved daughter-in-law, Regina, by her side at the age of 77. Loretta worked at East Hampton High School for 26 years. All of the kids at the school gravitated toward her and called her “Ma.” Ma’s official job title was “custodian” but her actual function at the school was school psychologist, counselor, social worker, disciplinarian, rescuer, and friend. Loretta touched every student she came in contact with, often being the only person they had to talk to about the problems they were having. She dished out plenty of wisdom and helped many students reach graduation by being

a positive, caring, supportive and often, tough, role model. Former students have continuously contacted Loretta over the years to express their many thanks for helping them get through some of the roughest times of their lives. Many say they never would have graduated were it not for her. Proof of this rests on her Facebook page where Loretta had 1,216 friends, many of them former students, personally known to her. Loretta knew that the only way to truly live was to engage in life with gusto, use “elbow grease” to get the job done, and do all things with love in service to God. She had a fiery spirit and told it like it was and anyone who knew her, knew this: she might love you but she might not “like your ways.” If that was the case, you could be sure she was praying for you . . . even if you were “on her list.”

In 1995 Loretta retired to her home in Barefoot Bay, Florida. Sadly, Bob passed away before they were able to make the Bay their home, together. Loretta went on to live a rich, full, life, volunteering at a soup kitchen and helping the homeless. She later joined the Moose Lodge and the Orioles. She enjoyed swimming at pool number 3, attended Saint Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, and volunteering at Sebastian River Medical Center. While volunteering at the hospital, Loretta always had a smile on her face and a comforting word for patients, families and staff. Loretta made friends wherever she went and people felt her warmth. She took the sadness of others to heart and it can very well be said that under a tough outer exterior, there was a very caring, sensitive heart, guarding an even lovelier soul. As Loretta grew and matured through her years she leaned on God more and more for comfort and guidance. In these last two years she studied her bible with great devotion and attended church regularly. It was very important to Loretta to forgive and be forgiven. Though Loretta loved everyone, make no mistake, the greatest passion she had was for her family who always graciously shared her. Loretta would go to any lengths to protect the family she loved. No greater love had a mother than the love that Loretta had for her beloved son, Stephen, and her daughter-inlaw, Regina. She was proud of the man that Stephen had become and beamed with joy when he was elected Superintendent of Highways for East Hampton Town. She loved watching Stephen and Gina’s family grow and loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren with all of her heart. Loretta is preceded in death by her brother, Kenny, her parents, Nellie and Ken, her eldest son, Bobby, her husband, Bob, and her sister Jinny. Loretta is survived by her son, Stephen K. Last Thursday and Sunday were busy days for East Hampton firefighters. At On Thursday morning, East Hampton Fire Department personnel deployed to a fire in a large, 50-ft high mulch pile at the landfill, which was stated as a natural by-product of composting. Firefighters used a pumper and their tower ladder to soak down the pile of mulch, assisted by a bulldozer supplied by a local contractor. After roughly two hours the scene was declared secure. On Sunday a poolside deck caught fire at 7 Montauk Avenue at 4:44 AM. The initial cause was apparently a metal outdoor firepit that had been left incompletely extinguished overnight, causing the wooden deck below it to catch fire.

Hey, Hey I’m A Monkee!
By Rick Murphy
Here’s what a showbiz veteran is: by the time Micky Dolenz was chosen to appear on “The Monkees,” he was a decade removed from a regular gig on network TV and several television gigs. He was still a teenager. How he became the signature
voice on some of the best selling records in rock histor y is a complicated tale. Suffice it to say Micky Dolenz will be in Riverhead on July 17 (at the Suffolk Theater) to sort things out himself. Riding the heels of the Beatles’ incredible popularity – specifically

with teenyboppers – two television promoters, Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson, were planning a TV series to capitalize on Beatlemania. Davy Jones, a Tony nominee who starred as the Artful Dodger in Oliver! was already in. The call went out for three other young men, ages 17-21. Dolenz, along with
Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork, were selected. (Steven Stills auditioned but moved on to the other pursuits – Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.) “ We were actors,” Dolenz stressed. “The Monkees were an imaginary rock group. We played CONTINUED ON B-3.

Rip Tide Danger Rick Espineira, 52, of Ronkonkoma and his 11-year-old son, Justyn, were swimming a few yards from shore at Cupsogue Beach around 5:30 PM on June 26 when they were hit with a wave and sucked into a rip current. Justyn was dragged 100 feet into the water. His father alertly grabbed a body board and went after him. The father reached his son and kept him afloat until help arrived. An 18-year old West Point cadet died Friday after getting caught in a riptide at nearby Cooper’s Beach earlier in the week.
Golf Anyone? East Hampton Village Police said a motorist was speeding on Further Lane Saturday when his vehicle left the roadway and entered the Maidstone Golf Club Short Course, going airborne and overturning at least twice. Police said the driver and only occupant, Kyle Rosko, 33, of Montauk, had been drinking excessively. He was medevaced to Stony Brook Hospital and held in stable condition as of press time. Rosko was hit with a Felony DWI due to a prior drinking-related conviction. LIRR Bomb Threat Sunday morning was a hectic one for LIRR eastbound riders heading for East Hampton. MTA Police said they received a call that there was a bomb on the train. Police evacuated the area at 7:50 AM, searched the train with a bomb-sniffing dog, and shut down service east of Speonk. No explosive device was found. Calverton Shooting Two men were in the parking lot in Calverton early Sunday morning. Riverhead Town Police said they responded to the Calverton Hills complex located on Hill Circle and found two men felled with gunshot wounds. Suffolk County Police responded to a call at 2 AM reporting the shootings. One victim, age 35, was hit three times including once in the cheek, and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said. The other victim, age 22, was shot in the stomach and taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Both men are listed in stable condition as of press time.

an unknown band that lived in a Malibu Beach house and could never quite make the big-time.” Music impresario Don Kirshner, meanwhile, was hired to develop music for the series. Rather than the bubble-gum music the producers anticipated, Kirshner had other ideas. “I call it progressive Bubble Gum,” Dolenz recalled with a laugh. Neil Diamond, (Tommy) Boyce and (Bobby) Hart, musicians and songwriters who had a knack for writing commercial music, wrote the show’s theme song; Kirshner tapped Brill Building veterans like Neil Diamond (“I’m A Believer”) and Carole King and Gerry Goffin (“Pleasant Valley Sunday”) for album cuts. “All you have to do is look at the songwriters. These writers were no slouches.” Dolenz noted the songs were “appropriate for the show but well constructed.” In fact, 50 years later the songs still resonate. The first album took off and the music began to be featured more and more on the TV series. Yet the Monkees were a paradox – they weren’t allowed to actually play on any of the recordings, though they did sing. Yet the public wanted to see the boys, and they were expected to play their own instruments. Ironically, Jones was the only member of the cast who could play the drums. Tork, Dolenz, and Nesmith could all play instruments to varying degrees of competency, but Jones was considered the most camera friendly though it was Dolenz who had the radio-friendly voice. The first single, “Last Train To Clarksville” (written by Boyce and Hart) took off like it was shot out of a cannon and became an international smash. Dolenz turned in a nuanced vocal in what was basically a mild anti-war tune patterned after a Beatles’ chord riff. “I’m A Believer” followed and was if anything, even a bigger hit, once again with Dolenz handling the lead vocal. “I like to think I had a little something to do with it,” Dolenz said modestly.
Snow Balled The die was cast: the boys would have to go out and tour. Dolenz, the show biz professional, was given the chore of learning the drums so Jones, who was diminutive, could be seen by his legions of fans. Within months Dolenz was competent enough to go on tour. “I think they cast us thinking we would eventually get out on the road. We played everything live. The whole thing snow-balled out of control.”

The TV show eventually ended, though it went into syndication in 1986. “We did about four years of episodes in two years basically for standard pay, no residuals,” Dolenz lamented. On the music front the boys, especially Tork and Nesmith, wanted more control. The producers fired Kirshner because he had final say over what songs were recorded and did not want to cede any authority. He got his revenge by starting a TV show of a cartoon rock band (“The Archies”) and writing them a Number One song “Sugar, Sugar” along with Jeff Barry. The Monkees recorded Foundation, an album containing some of their own songs and instrumentation, but it did not yield a hit single though album sales were brisk – it was knocked out of the Billboard top spot by Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. How hot were the Monkees? At their peak the group sold more records then the Rolling Stones and Beatles combined. Tork was the first to cut the umbilical chord, in 1969 and Nesmith followed the following year. The band toured intermittently and recorded several albums afterwards. Dolenz almost landed the role of Fonzie in “Happy Days” but alas, at six-foot one-inch he towered CONTINUED ON B-5.

Dolenz appeared in films with people as diverse as Linda Lovelace and 14 year-old Catherine ZetaJones. The versatile Dolenz found regular work on the stage, touring with Pippin and appearing in Hairspray. He reunited with Jones to do the musical The Point written by one of his best friends, Harry Nilsson. In fact, after his current tours are over Dolenz wouldn’t mind another stint on the stage, perhaps on Broadway. “Oh yeah!” he said, noting he had worked with Tim Rice in the Broadway production of Aida.
50th Anniversary There have been reunion tours and several albums since the heydays, but nothing to rival the scope of the band’s latest endeavors – a 50th anniversary tour on the heels of a great album featuring some of the group’s most beloved songs and several new efforts written by some of indie rock’s brightest songwriters including Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Ben Gibbard and Andy Partridge (XTC). It’s the best selling Monkees’ album since the salad days, and the unmistakable highlight is a duet (a la Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole) with Nilsson on Nilsson’s “Good Times,” wherein Dolenz does his friend proud with a brilliant vocal

performance. Dolenz is living a double life: when the Monkees aren’t touring, he is on his own, and although it’s billed as a “solo” tour, it's not anything like a lone troubadour playing protest songs on acoustic guitar and harmonica. “Goodness no! I’m glad we can straighten that out. This is a rock band. In fact, it’s a lot of the same guys who play with the Monkees,” Dolenz clarified. He draws material from his days with the Monkees but also more personal selections from his critically acclaimed album Remember, sampling more of Nilsson’s work and revealing the present day Dolenz to be a sophisticated vocalist, sometimes brooding and lamenting, always seasoned, yet richer and fuller then ever before as if he has indeed aged like fine wine. “I should be lying in the cellar on my side in the dark, like a bottle of fine wine,” Dolenz laughed. “But I’m blessed to have a job that’s fun – that’s why they call it ‘playing.’ It’s two words – it’s a ‘show’ and it’s a ‘business.’ I find when you care about both you tend to be more successful.” As for the teenyboppers, they’ve grown up and yes, they still come to the shows to scream at the sight of the boys they had crushes on. But a new phenomenon has developed. “Yes, they are still out there, moms and grandmoms but with 15 yearolds out there as well. We’re playing to three generations.” Micky Dolenaz and his band are at Suffolk Theater July 17. Call 631727-4343 for reservations. Dinner packages are available.

Throne-Holst, Calone: Too Close To Call By Rick Murphy
Anna Throne-Holst and Dave Calone are locked in a dead heat in the Democratic primary race to choose an opponent for Republican/ Conservative incumbent Lee Zeldin’s First Congressional seat. Last week’s race was a nail biter from the onset. Throne-Holst opened up an over 400-point lead early on but Calone chipped away, eventually seizing a slight lead with 80 percent of the voters reporting. But Throne-
Holst fought back, and when the final vote was recorded the former supervisor of Southampton Town had a 29-vote lead, 5446-5417. All eyes now turn to the Suffolk County Board of Elections, which will begin counting close to 1700 absentee ballots this week. Both candidates will have the opportunity to challenge ballots they deem questionable which will undoubtedly take a considerable amount of time.

In 2010 the race between Tim Bishop and Randy Altschuler wasn’t finalized until 36 days after the election. Both candidates expressed confidence they will prevail when the final vote is counted. “I’m proud to be in the lead after Election Night, and am most especially proud of the positive campaign we ran,” Throne-Holst said. “I owe a heartfelt debt of gratitude to our thousands of supporters and volunteers who are invaluable partners in getting our message to voters,” she added. “We did not have Wall Street fundraisers, and we did not have $720,000 of Super PAC funding poured in for us in the last three weeks -- but here we are in a virtual tie,” Calone commented. “I cannot begin to thank all the volunteers and supporters who have put their hearts and souls into this campaign over the past year.” There was no breakdown on the origins of the absentee ballots. Throne-Holst lost in East Hampton by over 100 votes; she had criticized a plan for controlling helicopter flights into East Hampton

Calone accused Throne-Holst of contributing to the Conservative Party, she countered that she attended a handful of functions in her role as town supervisor. “I look forward to working with Democrats throughout the district as we focus on our common goal of defeating Lee Zeldin,” Calone said. “We all know Lee Zeldin is not looking forward to going up against my record, and voters will reject not only his extremist views and votes, but also his enthusiastic embrace of Donald Trump, who is dangerous for both Long Island and the country.” Throne-Holst was critical of the tone in Calone’s television ads that aired in the final week of the campaign. “Hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent attacking me with dishonest negative ads, but today we are leading because voters trusted my record of fighting for Suffolk County families and cleaning up the financial mess in Southampton,” Throne-Holst said. Both candidates were said to have spent over $1 million on the primary. Zeldin, meanwhile, has become an up and comer in the Republican ranks and is building a substantial war chest for the November general election.

By Rick Murphy
RICK’S SPACE Walk Like A Man (Clean Like A Woman) My dad never cooked. When I was growing up the duties were clearly defined: Mom did the kitchen stuff and Dad did the heavy lifting. Not so in my house. Sunday, Karen made me clean up the yard, citing the oft-used “It’s a man’s job!” mantra. Then, I cooked. Like always, I cleaned up afterwards. This is a scene that plays out often at our house. I work, go to the market, I cook, and then I clean up. While I did the dishes Karen read my beloved Sunday New York Times. I admit to a fetish – I like a virgin Sunday Times. Karen, meanwhile, enjoys rough sex with the poor thing. She wrinkles it. She rips out pictures and articles. She leaves the sections strewn about the house folded open. Then like clockwork, as the last plate gets rinsed, she looks up in a melodic voice and says, “Sweetie, do you want me to help?” I am always amazed at her timing. My mom, who was Italian, used to make fun of my dad, who was Irish, and visa versa. It was good-natured banter, kind of like teasing. Basically the only ethnic putdowns you can make to an Irishman are about drinking, procreating, and eating potatoes.
They are all true: Irishmen love potatoes just as Italians love pasta. Nevertheless whenever my mother wanted to goad my father she’d say I had potatoes in my ear. The topic would come up because by mother would invariably use the back side of a bobby pin to clean out blackheads in our ears. We w i l l f o r t h e m o m e n t forego the discussion about the appropriateness of this type of behavior and whether it constituted a form of torture or not. Suffice it to say having experienced it first hand, if they used this method at Guantanamo Bay we would have found bin-Laden a lot quicker. Whenever my father was within earshot Mom would say, “Look, I pulled out a potato!” My father long ago dispensed with those nasty slang names people used to call Italians after he,

like the rest of the world, learned Italians really do kill you for such offenses. But he was fond of teasing Mom by saying she had olive oil in her blood and I’d always chime in with, “I bet it’s not 100 percent virgin,” which would elicit a glare. Once I said her toes looked like garlic cloves and I got a beating for that. Anyhow, by the time dinner was over Sunday I was tired. I mercifully fell asleep knowing there was a long work week ahead. The next morning the alarm went off and I dragged my tired body out of bed for another week of grueling manual labor (OK, I have a desk job). That’s when it began: “I don’t wanna complain but . . .” First of all, that’s a complaint. It’s the tone of the whine that gives it away. “Feel this. Feel this!” Karen is holding out a pan. “What do you feel?” “A pan,” I say meekly, wondering if this was some kind of marriage quiz like the kind that used to be in Redbook. “No. It’s grease. And you put it on top of the stove. Now I have to clean all the burners!” "Actually it’s olive oil,” I pointed out meekly. “Being Italian . . .” She cut me off. “It’s just like my mother always

said: You clean like a man!” And there it was. I used to think the second line the song “Love Like A Man” was “As fast as you can” instead of “Love all you can.” So I tried to complete the love making process as fast as I could. Funny that none of my relationships lasted very long. But I digress. I immediately thought of the Four Seasons’ song “Walk Like A Man” which Frankie Valli sings falsetto – he sounds like a girl. I am equally conflicted. How come cleaning up the back yard like a man is a good thing, and cleaning up the kitchen the same way is a bad thing? So it was when I came home Monday night Karen said she was sorry about how she acted in the morning and wanted me to know she appreciated how hard I worked. She told me she cleaned the entire house that day because she wanted to show me she works hard, too. Then she ordered Chinese food and told me she would clean up after dinner. I went to the den to read my beloved Times. “Honey, where is the Sunday Times?” “Oh, it was strewn about all over the place so I threw it out.” In other words, she cleaned like a woman.

An ‘Espresso’ Delivery Talk about a latte excitement and a grande event! A Suffolk County Emergency Services Dispatcher, answering a 911 call, assisted a couple with delivery of their baby – after the couple realized they wouldn’t get to the hospital in time and parked in the lot of a local Starbucks. The couple was driving to the hospital on County Route 111 in Manorville, shortly after 9:30 PM on Wednesday, while the mother was experiencing labor. They pulled over and called 911 when they realized they did not have enough time to make it to the hospital. Suffolk County Emergency Services Dispatcher Marlo Van Houten, of Bellport, a 10-year employee of the Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services,
Party For The Park
On Sunday, from 5 PM to 8 PM on Long Warf, the Sag Harbor Partnership will be hosting a fundraiser to create a waterfront park on a piece of land owned by the village. Stores in Sag Harbor will participate with special deals, raffles and other enticements to raise funds and to celebrate the shops that make the village so special. There will be an Art for the Park Auction at the event to showcase local artists and galleries. All Sag Harbor galleries are offering work for sale, with over 60 different artist contributions. There will also be a new show of contemporary artwork by Pierson High School students titled Sag Harbor in Focus at Dodds and Eder on 11 Bridge St. in Sag Harbor. There will be family-friendly activities such as puppet workshops, face painting, and red tailed hawks and great horned owls brought by the Wildlife Rescue Center. There will be live music by the HooDoo Loungers, and the Sag Harbor Fire Department will be bringing their huge grills for a barbeque. Tickets start at $50 per person and for children under 16 it is $10. For more information go to sagharborpartnership.org.
received the call at 9:39 PM. The caller stated that the car had pulled over into the parking lot of the Starbucks on County Route 111, and ESD Van Houten instructed the father on how to assist his wife in delivery, to make sure the baby was breathing, how to tie off the umbilical cord, and to keep the baby warm. “Once again, our emergency services personnel were able to quickly come to the aid of a family in need,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “I commend Dispatcher Van Houten for her calm and professional approach to ensuring the safety and well-being of this family.” A crew from Manorville

Community Ambulance, as well as Suffolk County Police Department personnel, arrived on the scene by 9:44 PM and assisted in-person following delivery. Mother and baby Sailor Jewel were transported to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. If this happened a few years back, and down the road apiece the couple would have had to name their precious Jewel, “Grace” after the famed Exit 70 hot dog stand.

Obituary Lindsay Forde, 33
Lindsay Forde, daughter of Deborah Merrill and Barry Forde died on June 27. She was 33 and living in Austin Texas, though East Hampton, her birthplace, was her true home. Dear Editor, As I was sitting here, reading last week’s edition, regarding Rick Murphy’s infatuation with bugs, I felt motion on my left instep. Yikes! A large black ant! I was sure, that sometime during the wee hours. Rick Murphy was at his environmentally best, sparing the life of the critter, who may just be the king ant. Figuring his mating call would cause the colony to move south east and he would be free of them. I also spared his life and left it near the Indy office complex. Then, he could be free to roam the wilds of Dune Alpin and visit him at work. ARTHUR FRENCH
Uptown Girls Dear Editor, Kudos to Governor Cuomo for signing a bill that will give women more access to mammograms, and to Billy Joel for lending his name to the cause. But you don’t have to be a “big shot” to help stop breast cancer. In the U.S. and other countries in which people get a large percentage of their calories from meat and dairy, breast cancer rates are much higher than in countries such as Japan, where people eat far fewer animals. But when Japanese girls are raised on western diets, their breast cancer rates surge. According to Dr. T. Colin Campbell, director of the most comprehensive study of health and nutrition ever conducted, the China Project, “No chemical carcinogen is nearly so important in causing human cancer as animal protein.” Not surprisingly, two large studies of vegetarians in Germany and another in England found that vegetarians were about 40 percent less likely to develop cancer than their

Lyme Be Gone Dear Rick, I feel like a voice in the wind. I have tried many times to alert some of my friends and some of my neighbors about a miracle cure that not only relieves the symptoms of Lyme, but destroys it completely. There will be no remission, and no flare-ups. Chlorine Dioxide, also called MMS is cheap, easy to get to (at the moment anyway) and simple to use, without any side effects. My husband and I are living, breathing and healthy proof to support those truths. Four years ago I got Lyme. I live on eight acres of wooded land, and when I saw a bad tick bite, I already thought it might have been exactly what it was. I had my blood tested. Yes, I had the disease. I felt like crap, and I was worried. My doctor prescribed Doxycycline, one of the most powerful antibiotics. I had to stay out of the sun for 30 days. Then I was re-checked. I still had Lyme. She then prescribed amoxicillin, a weaker variety, and I was frightened. Perhaps there was no way out? My better-half had been diligently doing research on his own to save me, and when I came back from the doctor the second time, he had come up with MMS as a different solution. It was certainly out of the box, but I trusted him, and he didn’t want me to go on this experiment by myself. He also had Lyme and joined me on a three-week regimen, swallowing low doses of MMS every hour, every evening for six hours. After seven days of it, I was slogging
Ed Gifford through my living room like a zombie, still under the terrible weight of the Lyme monkey’s claws deep in my back when suddenly . . . I felt it lift and fly away. I felt the disease die, then and there. We stayed on the evening treatment for another two weeks, just to be sure. I was then checked

again and I was free of it. Since then, we have both been bitten quite a few more times, living in the woods and working on our projects out there, but we have never gotten the terrible sickness again. Whenever we see a tick on our skin, Continued on Page 24.

beginning to dig in and send us both back to hell, we simply take the bug off and instantly put on a topical lotion of the MMS on the bite and the surrounding area. It can never go past the barrier we now erect. I know there are many victims on Long Island right now. Eating limes and swallowing more antibiotics and herbs and who knows what, won’t save them. MMS will, almost instantly. If you’ve had the disease for a long time, there may be damage that getting rid of the poison can’t fix, but it will certainly stop the ongoing destruction. You may ignore me, like almost everyone else. The house is burning and I am holding a switch to let loose a lake of water to put it out. However, our medical system in America does not want it. It is too cheap, and too effective. If by some fluke, you consider this option as a possible way out, BE CAREFUL. It really is a cure, and sometimes declaring it to the world like Paul Revere riding along on his horse can be dangerous. They’ve already metaphorically shot down a few of us, and sent us to jail . . . so they can turn around and give out more pills that won’t work. Does that sound like we’re living in a free nation anymore? Keep an open mind. I pray you may find a careful way to help thousands of sick people, I can’t. Frustrated and cured. GAGE IRVING

Today I’ll take them to Montauk to see the fireworks and we’ll have a barbecue afterwards. They’re from Costa Rica so I’m introducing them to the customs of the Fourth of July in America. Lexi Quitco I’ve been spending the weekend with family. It’s great when all of us get to spend time together. Some of our cousins are here from out of town. We saw fireworks on Saturday night in Sag Harbor so I don’t think that will be going again tonight. It’s been a lot of fun! Eden Greenstein Spending time with lots of cousins. We went to the beach as much as we could and of course, we had a couple of family barbecues. Alfred Birnbaum We’ve been celebrating with four generations of our family. Middle East countries, and there is nothing to prevent them from continuing this practice. Some of the military shipments included materials for advanced weapons, and rockets and missiles. Furthermore, it is possible these planes could be used to move troops and could possibly be
converted to bombers. The U.S. could revoke the license to sell the aircraft if Iran violates the agreement, but Iran would have control of the previously delivered aircraft at that time. Congress should not approve this contract. If it is approved, delivery of the aircraft should be stretched out over an extended number of years. Additionally, we should install back door disabling software in each aircraft which we can mobilize at our discretion. DONALD MOSKOWITZ

Art Without Barriers
By Kitty Merrill
How can you experience the joy and beauty of art when you cannot see? Last year Peconic Landing in Greenport launched its “Art Without Barriers” program designed to ensure people with all visual, hearing and mobile abilities have the opportunity to enjoy art. M a d e p o s s i b l e b y Pe c o n i c Landing’s Resident Art Committee and grant funding provided by the Mattituck Lions Club, the program features an interactive tour of Peconic Landing’s sculpture garden which is home to 18 different works of art displayed across campus. Guests of different abilities have the option of using descriptive audio narration available via a free smartphone download, large print or braille catalogues, as well as easy access to the garden by way of cleared foot trails to improve the tour experience. “People from all over the world, from as far as China, have engaged with the program and downloaded the descriptive audio to enjoy,” Dominic Antignano, Peconic Landing’s cultural arts curator explained. “That means a lot to us, that people are connecting Peconic Landing with culture and the arts.” Art descriptions adhere to standards set by the American Foundation for the Blind. Visitors are also invited to touch the sculptures to get a sense of their texture and design. “The exhibit is one of the few that allows guests to reach out and touch the art,” said Antignano. “For those with a visual or hearing impairment, it takes the descriptive audio experience to the next level. Art is not just a visual experience.” Last week about two-dozen visitors with visual impairments from Nassau and Suffolk Independent Living Organizations toured the garden. Peconic Landing was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for the outreach and accessibility efforts from the Suffolk Independent Living Organization. With the help of volunteers the guests were guided around campus and listened to audio descriptions about the individual pieces. A few of the guests are also deaf; a deaf-blind interpreter who communicates using signs on the person’s hand
joined the tour, as did two of the garden’s artists. Martin Rothenberg and Steven Zaluski described the inspiration behind their pieces and helped guests visualize the art. “This program allows us to connect with our residents, but also members of the greater community,” said Robert J. Syron, president/CEO of Peconic Landing at its launch in 2015. “This award winning program provides greater access for all to enjoy culture and the arts.” Last year the program was named one of LeadingAge New York’s 2015 Innovations of the Year. The award distinguishes organizations that use creative problem solving to improve the quality and access of services for seniors, according to the advocacy group website. Peconic Landing also hosts a community outreach effort it calls “Art For Lunch.” Extending its art accessibility program, Peconic Landing invites the public to visit its sculpture garden during lunch hours Monday through

Thursday all summer long. Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic, stop in and enjoy the interactive sculpture garden tour featuring 18 different works of art displayed across campus. A welcome kiosk is the official starting point for the tour where visitors will find the directives needed to take advantage of its interactive component. Visitors can also find copies of a map of the grounds at this location. Prior to the launch of “Art for Lunch,” visitors had minimal access to information about the garden without the help of a personal guide. “The addition of this new technology streamlines the tour, making it possible to open it up to the greater community at their leisure,” said Syron. “Feel free to sit down and enjoy lunch while taking
in the sculptures scattered across campus.” The tour is free and open to the public Monday through Thursday, 11 AM to 3 PM through October. Guests are invited to bring their own lunch and are asked to park at Brecknock Hall where the welcome kiosk is located. Press the button on the new, solar-powered kiosk and the tour will begin. “The Sculpture Garden at Peconic Landing makes the art come alive,” said Antignano. “The Art Without Barriers sculpture garden has become home to regional, national and internationally recognized artists. Touring the sculpture garden utilizing descriptive audio or docent-led tours invites exploration and wellbeing. I invite everyone to come experience art in this way.”

NBA Superstar And Tom Brady Come To The Hamptons By Rick Murphy
If the mountain won’t come to Muhammad . . . Never has the old proverb been more appropriate. NBA superstar Kevin Durant is an unrestricted free agent, which means he can play anywhere
he wants to and get paid an extraordinary amount of money to do so. Durant didn’t let the little matter of $150 million dollars get in the way of his July Fourth weekend plans – sunning in The Hamptons. So his suitors came to him (and us!).
Most notable was a contingent of Boston Celtics’ hierarchy and players, who brought along an A-lister of their own: NFL superstar quarterback Tom Brady. In fact, Brady was seen strolling down Newtown Lane in East Hampton Village Saturday wearing a kangol
hat along with Celtics’ General manager Danny Ainge and two of the team’s players, Kelly Olynyk and Marcus Smart. The Celtics two best players, Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder, were also said to be part of the contingent of Celtics who came to court Durant. Durant, only 27 has played for the Oklahoma City Thunder since becoming a professional after one year at the University of Texas. He is considered to be one of the three best basketball players in the world along with Stephen Curry and Lebron James. The six foot nine-inch small for ward was the only college freshman ever to win the Naismith College Player of the Year. Since turning professional Durant has won an NBA Most Valuable Player Award, four NBA scoring titles, the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, and an Olympic gold medal. He has also been selected to six All-NBA teams and seven AllStar teams. The Golden State Warriors and Oklahoma City are also said to be finalists to sign Durant, and were also said to be involved in negotiations this weekend. However, ESPN reports five teams were scheduled to meet with Durant over the weekend. ESPN reported Thunder brass met with Durant Saturday afternoon in East Hampton. San Antonio was to make a pitch later that day. The Miami Heat met with Durant in East Hampton Sunday according to at least one media report. Durant was spotted in Boston on Friday, met with the Celtics, then hopped on a 14-seat seaplane with Brady for a trip to The Hamptons. It is unclear what Durant’s connection to the East End is but he has rented a house in East Hampton Village for the month of August, sources said. Durant, 27, has spent his entire nine-year career with the Thunder franchise. He averaged 28.2 points per game last season and led the Thunder to within one victory of the NBA Finals. It’s been a whirlwind tour of the country for Durant this week. He was in Los Angeles filming a TV commercial Wednesday. That night, he flew to Oklahoma City with his agent, Rich Kleiman, before heading east.

Aviators Cling To First As Mustangs Surge By Rick Murphy
Westhampton needed a win Friday to keep their place atop the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball league standings when they found themselves nursing a one run lead Friday. Playing at Riverhead, the Aviators were down to their final out. Luckily, Aaron Ping was coming to the plate. Ping was looking to drive in the run, and he did that and more: he blasted a two-run shot to left field that cleared the wall, tying the team’s single season record for round trippers in a season with 11. It was the second time he went deep in the game. Westhampton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the second place Tomcats after Daniel Franchi drove in Roman Baisa in the first inning with a double. The Tomcats scored twice in the third but Westhampton retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of ribbies by Jack Massa, Pat Lagravinese (Albany) and Franchi. Riverhead’s Benjamin Wagner laced a single in the fourth to knot the score at four. It stayed that way until the seventh when Ping launched his first bomb. “I was preparing to drive in the runner when I got ahead in the count . . . I was looking for a fastball and I drove the ball out to left field.” Ping’s round tripper gave Westhampton a temporary 5-4 lead. Riverhead fought back to tie the game on a fielder’s choice by Michael Flynn. Over the last eight games, the second baseman has compiled a .469 batting average with seven home runs and 14 ribbies. With his 11 home runs, Ping is now just one home run away from 2012 Tomcat Josh Mason’s league record for home runs in a season. After Ping’s second dinger put the Aviators up 8-5 Zach Bygun, pitching his third inning in relief, shut the door on the Tomcats to earn the win. The Tomcats got their revenge Saturday, though, beating the Aviators in Westhampton 6-4. Westhampton currently sits in first place with a 16-7-1 mark, followed by Montauk (14-9) and North Fork (14-12). Riverhead is 11-9-1, Sag Harbor 10-12-1,
Southampton 8-17 and Shelter Island 6-13-1. Chris Weiss, a junior at Hofstra, went six scoreless innings to stifle Riverhead. Asher Lee-Tyson scored twice, batted in a run, and stole a base for the winners. Gavan Garay went 2-4 and Benjamin Wanger 2-5.

Blackfish Legislation
Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele announced this week that the Legislature had approved their legislation which would prohibit those holding a marine and coastal district food fish landing license from landing blackfish or tautog taken from waters outside the marine and coastal district for commercial purposes. Un d e r c u r r e n t l a w, t h e New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has the authority to issue a commercial food fish landing license to State residents and non-residents alike. T he c o mme rc i al fo o d fi sh landing license was originally developed to allow large US trawlers that fish the federal waters of the East Coast to land their catch in New York. Holders of this license are allowed to land fish in New York for commercial sale that were harvested outside of State waters, either in the exclusive economic zone or in waters of another state. Aside from a minimum age requirement of 16, there are no eligibility requirements to receive a food fish landing license. In particular, there is no fishing income eligibility requirements for this license as there are for all other Stateissued commercial fishing licenses in New York State. With significant increases in demand and high dockside prices for live blackfish in ethnic markets, the incentive is high for those possessing a food fish landing license to go offshore and catch blackfish and return to New York to s ell t he m. M o re so , t he se individuals are free to fish for blackfish outside of the recreational open season in New York. M.X.L.

Coast Guard Auxiliary News By Vincent Pica
Commodore, First District, Southern Region (D1SR) United States Coast Guard
We’re Sinking! When I wrote about why 4 out of 5 boats sink at the dock, I promised you that there would be another article on that 5th boat – the one that sinks underway. This is far more dangerous since you and your crew are aboard and not driving up to the marina to find your mast light sticking up out of your slip. Why Do Boats Sink at Sea? Before we get into the other percentages, why’s and wherefore’s, the single most reported reason is water coming aboard from the stern through the out-board engine cut-out. While fine for the bays, be extremely cautious about taking a boat so configured onto the high seas. A following sea can easily “poop” you from behind and overwhelm your capacity to off-load the water. As to the other percentages and categories, roughly 1 in 5 sinkings at sea (18%) are due to direct leaks in the vessel itself, not caused by violent contact with the bottom or the sea itself. Areas of ingress, in order, are: through-hull fittings that give way; stuffing box leaks (the spot under the boat where the drive shaft exits the engine space of a cruiser and enters the water), knot-meter plugs, and bait well discharge back-ups. Roughly 1 in 8 sinkings at sea (12%) are caused by raw (sea) water cooling and exhaust systems failures. These parts, subjected to high heat from engine exhaust gases and the corrosive effects of salt water, simply wear out – and you are now pumping water from the sea into the engine spaces. Hitting something, often rocks, accounts for another 10%. This is called “holing the boat,” i.e., you
just put a hole in it. Roughly 1 in 20 sinkings at sea (6%) are caused by excess force/excessive speed and the hull comes apart. What Do I Do Now?? Put Your Life Jackets On – Right away, direct everyone to don their life jackets. As I have noted before, on my vessel, I have a heavy weather/ type-1 life jacket on the back of my helm seat. Across the back, where the crew can read it, it says, “If you see the captain put this on, try to find one for yourself.” Don’t Be Bashful – Immediately get on the radio and call the USCG. Tell them where you are, how many people are aboard and where the water is coming from. Why how many people? Because if they get there after the boat goes down, make sure they pick up everybody. No one gets left behind. Stop the leak – If water is coming through a hole in the hull, try to stop it. Jam towels, cushions, extra life-jackets – anything – into the hole. Brace the plug with a shoulder only if you have to (you want to avoid having anybody below when the boat sinks…). Use a spar, oar, bimini cover pole, boarding ladder – anything – to jam your plug(s) into that hole. An old sail boater’s trick is to jam a sail into the hole from the outside. Let the sea pressure work for you. Not a lot of power boaters carry sails on their Bayliner – but it may give you an idea. You won’t stop the water but you will likely slow it. It is going to take time for help to arrive so you have to start doing things to buy yourself more time. Buy time by slowing the ingress of water, you may have to slow down to contain the water pressure on your plug so you are doing a tradeoff here – less water but more time

to shore. Start with less water and evaluate who is winning – you or the sea. Trim the Boat – If you hit something, it is likely that the hole is in the forward part of the boat and possibly near the water line. Trim the boat up and try to get the hole out of the water. If you can, you win and the sea loses. Any Port in a Storm – If you are losing the battle after doing everything above, beach the boat if you can. Who cares what happens to the boat at this point? We might be talking about living or dying now. Life first, property last. Create a Ditch Bag – If the situation continues to deteriorate, say your prayers but don’t leave the boat until it sinks out from under you. But have a “ditch bag” ready

– cell phone, handheld radio, fresh water, dry clothes, medical kit, flash light, flares, etc – come immediately to mind. It is always good to have a ditch bag ready whenever you go “outside.” Hit a 45’ container that fell off an ocean-going cargo ship on its way from Brazil to Maine and you won’t have to take your shoes off to count the minutes you have left on your boat. When you have a leak in your boat, secure the crew, call for help and try to stop the leak . . . You’re the captain. If you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources Department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing . . .
