While austerity normally follows global economic dives, over the past year, TikTok has seen interior design and decor videos on its platform veer away from sleek minimalism towards maximalist styles. Creators on TikTok have defined their homes by collecting unique artefacts and vintage items from thrift shops which reflect their personalities. On Airbnb, over 35 000 listings include maximalism keywords such as “velvet”, “mixed patterns” and “animal prints” in their descriptions.
