“A Place to Foster Growth” Graham Heights Streets Ministries unveiled The Liz Lounge September 8 of this year. The lounge is open Monday–Thursday from 2:00–6:00 p.m. Reggie Davis arrived at the idea to name the lounge after the late Liz Fleming. “It definitely meant a lot to me. I was surprised,” Liz’s daughter, Ruthie Turpin said. Liz was a member of Independent and served the church in a variety of ways. Ruthie currently serves as Recreation Director at Streets. As Recreation Director, she supervises and plans activities and sports for students. Ruthie collaborated with other Streets staff members to create the lounge as a space for girls to spend time. “This place is great for people who are looking for ways to get plugged in,” she said. The lounge is a place for Streets middle and high school girls. The room has a television for girls to watch movies, craft tables for
The Liz Lounge at Streets Graham Heights art projects, books and magazines to read, and comfortable furniture, with the intention to provide girls at Streets a place where they can relax and build community. “It is a multi-faceted room. We saw it as a place where we could chill and hang-out,” Ruthie said. At least thirty girls use the lounge for various activities, every day. The lounge is used for art Classes on Mondays and a class called beautiful me on Wednesdays, to discuss, boys, health, money, internet safety, etc. “It’s just kind of a place to foster relationships and growth. Especially for girls,” Ruthie said. A Bible study for upper high school and lower college age women is held in the lounge on Wednesday evenings. “This is where we’re working to build up strong women who are firm in their faith,” Ruthie said. Several members of IPC have had a hand in the development and design of The Liz Lounge. “The purpose is to build community with the girls. The hope for the future is for people to volunteer their time,” Lisa Yelverton said. Lisa is a current member of IPC and has been involved in decorating the lounge. She was in a bible study led by Liz Fleming for ten years. “She was a dear mentor and a friend,” Lisa said. Bi-Monthly Issue #1 things. “She was an avid reader. That was kind of the inspiration behind having a place to go and read,” Lisa said. “It encapsulates a lot of who she was and all the things she supported,” said Adrienne Hillyer, current Fitness Director at IPC and close friend of Liz. “A lot of people have become friends because of her. That’s just who she was,” Adrienne said. Liz’s favorite verse, Hebrews 10:23, was about hope. “I think of The Liz Lounge as a place of hope for the students,” Adrienne said. Tricee Fuson met Liz Fleming in April 1991. “She brought a meal to Steve and me after the birth of our daughter Hannah. We were brand new mem“This is where we’re working bers at IPC. Tricee has also helped decorate the lounge. “It encapsulates so many things that Liz loved including fellowship, teaching, and reading,” Tricee said. The Liz Lounge is a place for women to enjoy community. “It embodies so much of who Liz was, because she believed in hospitality. She loved to laugh and I hope that it will be a place where they can go and laugh,” Adrienne said. If you would like to serve The Liz Lounge in any way, contact Noelle Douglass at NDouglass@streetsministries.org. “This room can function without all the bells and whistles. What we really need is prayer,” Ruthie said. “The possibilities are truly endless. I believe Liz would be so pleased,” Tricee said.

Directions: Cook bacon slices in large pot until crisp. • Remove bacon and drain. • Reserve 2 tbsp. drippings in pan. • Crumble bacon and set aside. • Sauté onion and carrots in bacon drippings over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes (until onion is tender). • Add celery and apple to pan and sauté 5 minutes. • Add garlic and sauté 1 minute. • Add squash and chicken broth. • Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until carrots are tender. • Process mixture, in batches, in a blender or food processor until smooth.• (Hot mixtures will erupt out of blender if too full– believe me I know). • Return mixture to pot. • Stir in lime juice and next 7 ingredients. • Simmer for 7-10 minutes or until thickened. • Top soup with crumbled bacon and garnish with sour cream and red pepper.
