HISTORY
Tea, South Dakota The town of Tea was plotted in 1900 and incorporated in 1906.
Prior to 1902, when the town was incorporated, the community was called Byron. When the post office was to be established, the postal service asked town leaders to provide a list of 10 possible names. There were already several towns using the name of Byron. Townspeople gathered in the general store and provided nine names, but got stumped for a tenth. So the decision was made to break for tea. The beverage became the tenth option, which was approved by the postal service and became the town’s new name. The town’s first newspaper, The Tea Signal, was published by Paul Harkness in 1914 and 1915. Some clippings are still available for viewing at the Tea museum.
The members of the Tea Area Historical Society, founded in the fall of 1999, serve as the guardians of Tea area history. Many of the town’s records and artifacts are stored at the museum operated by the Historical Society at 200 W. Maple St. The group also published a book in 2002 called Time for Tea. Copies of the book are still available for purchase. To get a copy, send a check or money order, plus $5 per item for shipping and handling, to: Tea Area Historical Society, PO Box 51, Tea, SD 57064 Many of the Historical Society’s records come from the town’s first (unofficial) historian, Idena Schriever. Idena’s husband, Calvin, operated the Crescent Cream Station in Tea from 1920 to 1943. The first Tea school was established in 1879 with 11 students. Mr. Mahor served as the district’s first teacher. As of 2015, the district had about 1,500 students enrolled, with three buildings—an elementary, intermediate, middle school and high school (shared building)—and a business office building, all located in Tea. The newly established second elementary is located in southern Sioux Falls near 41st Street and Tea-Ellis Road.

City of Tea Parks Tea City Park: Located at the corner of Main Avenue and Brian Street, The Tea City Park features a swimming pool with water slide, basketball courts, playground equipment, a picnic shelter, a grill, fishing pond with fountains, access to a bike path and restrooms. Electricity is available at the shelter. The shelter can be reserved for events by calling 498.5191. The public is allowed to fish within the Tea City Park Pond; no City/State fishing license is required.
Prairie Trails Park: Located at the south end of Poplar Avenue, a picnic shelter is surrounded by playground equipment with an open area for soccer fields. Portable restroom is available.
Howling Ridge Park: Tea’s newest park is equipped with tons of fun for all kids. This park is located on N. Devon Avenue featuring playground equipment, a picnic shelter, pond and a portable restroom.

TEA AREA Academics, Athletics, Arts The Tea Area School District is proud to be an active member of one of the fastest growing communities in the area. The Tea Area School District has a talented staff and supportive community working with the students to facilitate a sense of belonging for all, a passion for student success, and a relentless pursuit of student achievement. Tea Area High School offers a myriad of courses. The comprehensive curriculum provides a wide variety of courses from advanced placement and dual credit to career and technical opportunities. The middle school provides wheel classes, STEM curriculum, and accelerated academic classes. Our middle school and high school students are in a one-to-one environment with Chromebooks. The District offers many opportunities to our elementary students as we focus on differentiated instruction. We begin with offering junior kindergarten to our youngest learners. We are proud of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programming. Currently, we are the only district in the state to offer Project Lead The Way Launch programing to our elementary students. Coupled with the Launch curriculum is our teacher designed STEM days with a culminating science fair for students in the Intermediate grades. The District is proud to offer both a community preschool (Tea Sprouts) and T.A.S.K (Tea After School Kids). TASK is a before, after, and summer program for students in junior kindergarten through 6th grade. It is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and provides a wide variety of opportunities for our students and families. Titans have a wide variety of extracurricular opportunities. Students enjoy opportunities in a wide range of programs including drama, oral interpretation, marching band, pep band, jazz band, choir, SADD, cheer & dance, student council, yearbook, FCCLA, NHS, golf, football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, cross country, soccer and track & field. Library Tea Community Library features over 15,000 titles.
The Tea Middle/High School/Community Library, located on the Northwest side of the Middle/High School, is a full service library/ media center. The library features over 15,000 titles available for checkout including Young Adult, Fiction and Non-Fiction titles. Our family friendly library has a room set apart for easy reading/childrens’ books.
As one would expect from any lending library, the Tea Public Library offers a wide selection of traditional and new titles on its shelves. Included in the collection are audio books, DVD’s, and books on tape. Magazines and reference materials are also available for reading and study, but are not available for check-out. The library also offers E books that can be downloaded from the convenience of home. There are thousands of titles to choose from. Come into the Community library and they will get you signed up.

Tea Area Historical Society PO Box 51 • Tea, SD The Tea Area Historical Society’s largest project has been the establishment of a museum in the building that formerly housed St. Nicholas Catholic Church. The church’s social hall and kitchen provide a meeting area for the historical society, family reunions, Tuesday card playing and visiting for senior citizens, pancake meals, Lions Club and more. In the early 2000’s the society published Time for Tea, a book of over 400 pages with nearly 750 pictures and about 360 family stories. Along with recapturing Tea’s history, the society manages to find time to host events. The selection and crowning of Ma and Pa Teapot and the pancake breakfast are sponsored by the group during Teapot Days. At Christmas, the Tea Pot Society (associated with the Historical Society) also hosts a Christmas Tea, a fund raiser for a future Tea Pot Museum. The museum is open on an ‘as needed’ basis. The Tea Area Historical Society welcomes school children, community groups of all ages; to schedule a tour, contact Luella DeJong at 368.2492 or talk with any Historical Society member. Tea Lions Club The International Association of Lions Clubs is the largest service club in the world, represented by approximately 45,000 clubs and a membership exceeding 1,406,000, located in more than 180 countries and geographic areas. Lions are men and women who serve as volunteer members grouped under the international organization. Besides local projects, the major focus of the Lions Clubs is improving conditions for the blind and visually impaired, diabetics, and those having hearing disabilities. The Tea Lions Club provides a container to collect used eye glasses and hearing aids and batteries at the Tea Post Office. The club in Tea was chartered nearly 30 years ago and has been involved in many projects that serve the Tea community and beyond. Membership is open to any person who has a desire to serve the community and mankind worldwide. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Community Hall by the Tea Area Historical Museum. Everyone is welcome to attend or call President Myron Moore at 310-0353.

Tea Organizations Tea Area School District Association: The Tea Area School District Association is a 501-3c organization that serves as an umbrella organization for the school district so that any contributions can be tax deductible. They continue to offer this umbrella to all of the various fund-raising efforts such as Sports Boosters, Music Boosters, Tea Area PTO, After Prom, etc. They meet the first Tuesday of each quarter at the MS/HS Commons at 7:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend the meetings to offer their ideas and support.
Tea Area Community Fund: The Tea Area Community Fund (TACF) provides grants to area non-profit organizations whose purpose is to support a charitable, community enhanced, educational, or scientific program or activity. Grant applications are accepted in February of each calendar year with the funds awarded in April. Larry Rieck serves as chairman of the Tea Area Community Fund. Tea Area Food Pantry: The Tea Area Food Pantry serves Tea area residents who need assistance with food and toiletry items. The pantry is located at Trinity Lutheran Church at 335 W. First Street and is a combined effort of Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Living Hope Community Church and Risen Savior Lutheran Church. The pantry can be reached at 498.2343 and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment.
Tea Community Club: The Tea Community Club’s mission is to raise funds for the Tea Area School District and to provide educational opportunities in the form of projects, equipment, awards, assemblies and materials that are not funded by the district. Tea Area Parent Teacher Organization (TAPTO): The Tea Area Parent Teacher Organization is proud to be part of the Tea Area School District. The group was founded in 2003. TAPTO supports and encourages Tea Area students, families, and educators as they strive for academic excellence by building a sense of community through communication, cooperation, and commitment. The organization hosts family friendly events throughout the school year, such as Pizza Bingo, movie nights, a carnival and various education nights. The group also sponsors numerous programs in the schools, like Junior Achievement, the Backpack program, Artist in Residence and teacher appreciation events. TAPTO is proud to partner with the school district in organizing the annual Teacher of the Year event. TAPTO also holds a variety of annual fundraisers to improve classrooms and playgrounds. The Organization is run by volunteers (parents and teachers) and is always looking for new members. Tea Area Parents for Prom Safety (TAPPS): Tea Area Parents for Prom Safety (TAPPS) was formed in May 2007 after a high number of South Dakota alcohol-related deaths occurred. A dedicated group of parents formed the group to provide Tea Area students with a drug and alcohol free event. The group held their first after prom party in 2008. The groups fund-raising activities include: baseball concessions, Pizza Ranch fundraisers, school concessions, homecoming tattoos, Teapot Days and Tour De Kota.
Tea Area Scholarship Fund: Scholarships from the Tea Area Scholarship Fund are awarded each year to Tea Area High School seniors planning to attend a college, university or vocational institute. Applications may be obtained through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation each January and have a March deadline.
