Paul Harkness printed the town’s only newspaper, The Tea Signal, in 1914 and 1915. A livery stable was started in Tea by the Pitts brothers which later was run by Dick Highstreet. At one time, Tea had a cheese factory run by Charlie Blanche. Tea also had a hotel, owned and managed by Charlie Hoyer, who also had a meat market in the same building. The first bank in Tea was situated in the same location that is now the O’Toole Bar. It was built about 1900 and was a bank until 1922. Apart from a booming business community, the residents of Tea also made time for entertainment and education. The Woodman Hall was the scene of all the activities, dances, school plays, church suppers, memorial programs, rollerskating and basketball games. Ed Hoyer, Bessie Lamm Guemmer, Art Guemmer and Ernest Weise furnished the dance music. Later on, Tea had outdoor movies at the end of Main Street. The Tea Public School originated in 1879 with the building of the first schoolhouse (built 1 1/2 miles west of the present edifice). There was an enrollment of 11 pupils and the first teacher was Mr. Mahor. A two-story schoolhouse was built in Tea in 1904 which was used until the present one was built in 1959. www.teasd.com

Voter Registration You must be at least 18 years old, a citizen of the United States and a resident of South Dakota to register to vote. Mail-in-voting registration forms are available online and at City Hall. All registrations are processed through Lincoln County Auditor’s Office. You must be registered 15 days prior to an election in order to vote in that election. Visit www.state.sd.us/sos/vote or the Lincoln County Auditor’s Office at 100 E. 5th St., Canton, SD 51013 for more information.
Motor Vehicle Registration The Lincoln County Treasurer’s office titles and licenses all new and used motor vehicles, motorcycles, trailers, snowmobiles, and boats. The office also records and releases liens placed on vehicles. You will need to bring or send one of the following for renewal: 1. Title (if you own your vehicle free and clear you will have the title). 2. License renewal certificate (if you are making payments on your vehicle and you indicated that you wanted the title sent to the lienholder you would have received a license renewal certificate from the State of South Dakota). 3. Vehicle registration renewal card. You will receive this card in the mail approximately 90 days prior to your vehicles’ expiration date. Vehicle registration renewal cards are sent out as a courtesy and not all SD counties send renewal cards. 4. A copy of your title (if you have a lien against your vehicle and have lost or misplaced your license renewal certificate, you can get a copy of the title from your lien holder). 5. Your current registration, along with a photo ID, if you are leasing the vehicle and do not have a copy of your title. South Dakota residents have 30 days from the date of purchase of a new or used motor vehicle to transfer the title into their name. A 3% excise tax is imposed on most motor vehicle transactions unless exempt. The tax is based on the purchase price of the motor vehicle listed on the bill of sale, purchase order, or sales contract. All vehicles 10 model years or newer are taxed, regardless of the purchase price. Vehicles which are 11 or more model years old, may be exempt from the 3% excise tax if the bill of sale indicates a price of $2,200 or less. Credit is given for trade-ins. Contact the Lincoln County Treasurer’s Office for more information at (605) 764-5701. Additional information is available at the following links: http://www.state.sd.us/drr2/motorvehicle/title/register.htm and http://www.state.sd.us/ drr2/motorvehicle/forms.htm.

The Tea community offers an after school and summer care program called T.A.S.K. (Tea After School Kids). There is also a community preschool program called Tea Sprouts, as well as Head Start programming available. The co-curricular offerings include a wide range of programs including drama, oral interpretation, marching band, pep band, jazz band, choir, All State Band and Choir, SADD, cheerleading, student council, yearbook, FCCLA, golf, football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, cross country, and track and field. TEA COMMUNITY GUIDE

Famous Faces ■ The City of Tea is home to several famous people. Included among them are Olympian Derek Miles, artist Ray Kelly, and racing legend Doug Wolfgang.
Derek Miles Tea is honored to have two time Olympian Derek Miles live in the community and represent strong home town values. Derek Miles was born in Sacramento, California in 1972. After graduating from high school, Miles attended USD in Vermillion, where he obtained a degree in history and a master’s degree in athletic administration. Miles went onto the 2000 Olympic Trials, and became an alternate for the team. He continued his success, making his first Olympic Team in 2004 and finishing 7th place in Athens. At the 2008 Olympics, Miles finished fourth at the games. Although he did not bring home the gold, he bounced right back by winning the World Athletics Finals held in Germany on September 14th, 2008 with a jump of 19 feet.
Ray Kelly The combination of a South Dakota work ethic and talented hand allowed Tea resident Ray Kelly to become a nationally known artist and local celebrity. After acting in four movies and a number of television shows, Kelly hangs among the likes of Sylvester Stallone and the bar-brawling Vinnie Jones. But spending time with household names isn’t Kelly’s calling – his true love is art. Working in pencil and prismacolor wax pencils primarily, Kelly creates distinctly South Dakota-based pieces. Twenty-six years after deciding he wanted to be an artist, Kelly has clearly succeeded. He owns the Ray Kelly Art Gallery located on Main Street in Tea, and thirty-seven of his originals hang in the local Tea Steakhouse.
Doug Wolfgang Wolfweld Chassis, owned and operated by a racing legend in the Sprintcar World, Doug Wolfgang, is located in the industrial area near the Lincoln County Airport. Often referred to as one of the Big Three, Doug’s low-key personality and on-track intensity earned him the respect and admiration of competitors and race fans alike all across the country and Australia. As a professional race car driver with the World of Outlaws, he raced all over the United States, winning the prestigious Knoxville Nationals five times. Most days you will find the Wolfweld Chassis parking lot full of his loyal customers. His shop serves as a gathering place for racers, car owners, friends, and those who seek Doug’s experienced advice and wisdom. www.teasd.com

Tea Area Historical Society The Tea Area Historical Society’s largest project has been the establishment of a museum in the building that formerly housed St. Nicholas Catholic Church. The church’s social hall and kitchen provide a meeting area for the historical society, family reunions, Tuesday card playing and visiting for senior citizens, pancake meals, Lions Club and more. In the past year a new “Tea Garage” storage unit was built just east of the museum by the Town of Tea, for storage and display of larger agricultural items, including the 1937 Chevrolet donated by the Harvey and Ethel Bossman family. The restoration of this automobile is a current project of the Tea Area Historical Society. In 2002 the society published Time for Tea, a book of over 400 pages with nearly 750 pictures and about 360 family stories. Books are still available, contact 358-2492. Hard cover: $30.00 Soft cover: $25.00. Along with recapturing Tea’s history, the society manages to find time to host events. The selection and crowning of Ma and Pa Teapot and the pancake breakfast are sponsored by the group during Teapot Days. On New Year’s Eve the Speck’n’dicken Supper is held to add to the fund-raisers. At Christmas, the Tea Pot Society (associated with the Historical Society) also hosts a Christmas Tea, a fund raiser for a possible Tea Pot Museum sometime in the future. The society meets the second Tuesday of every month except January and February at 7 p.m. in the summer or 12:30 p.m. in the winter, in the social hall of the museum. Anyone is welcome to attend. Officers are President Luella DeJong, Vice-President Marlys Bergjord, Secretary Verlyss Jacobson and Treasurer Carroll Barnes. The museum is open on an ‘as needed’ basis. Call any of the officers for a tour. The Tea Area Historical Society welcomes school children, community groups of all ages and anyone else interested in what the museum has to offer. To reserve the social hall for a meeting or gathering, please contact Ruth Craig at 498-2464.
Tea Lions Club The International Association of Lions Clubs is the largest service club in the world, represented by approximately 45,000 clubs and a membership exceeding 1,406,000 located in more than 180 countries and geographic areas. Lions are men and women who serve as volunteer members grouped under the international organization. They enjoy fellowship, develop leadership capacities and dedicate part of their free time to help those in need all over the world while also making our own communities better places to live. Besides local projects, the major focus of the Lions Clubs is improving conditions for the blind and visually impaired, diabetics, and those having hearing disabilities. The Tea Lions Club provides a container to collect used eye glasses and hearing aids and batteries at the Tea Post Office. The club in Tea was chartered over 25 years ago and has been involved in many projects that serve the Tea community and beyond. Membership is open to any person, male or female, who has a desire to serve the community and mankind worldwide. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Community Hall by the Tea Area Historical Museum. Everyone is welcome to attend or call President Myron Moore at 310-0353. For more information about Lions Club please visit this website: www.lionsclub.org. Community events can be posted on the Lion’s sign located just north of the elevator by calling the Tea Lions at 310-0353. www.teasd.com

Tea Community Club The Tea Community Club’s mission is to raise funds for the Tea Area School District and to provide educational opportunities in the form of projects, equipment, awards, assemblies and materials that are not funded by the district. The Tea Community Club meets in the High School Commons twice a month, and everyone is encouraged to attend. Please contact Joan McIlvenna at 498-3238 for more information.
Tea Area Parents for Prom Safety Tea Area Parents for Prom Safety (TAPPS) was formed in May 2007 after a high number of South Dakota alcohol-related deaths occurred. A dedicated group of parents formed the group to provide Tea Area students with a drug and alcohol free event. The group held their first after prom party in 2008. The groups fund-raising activities include: baseball concessions, Pizza Ranch, school concessions, homecoming tattoos, Teapot Days and Tour De Kota.
Tea Area School District Assoc. The Tea Area School District Association is a 501-3c organization that serves as an umbrella organization for the school district so that any contributions can be tax deductible. They continue to offer this umbrella to all of the various fund-raising efforts such as Sports Boosters, Music Boosters, Tea Area PTO, After Prom, etc. They meet the first Tuesday of each quarter at the MS/HS Commons at 7:30 p.m. The meetings are always open to the entire community and residents are encouraged to attend and offer their ideas and support.

BOY SCOUTS & GIRL SCOUTS
CREATING TOMORROW’S LEADERS Scouting helps youth develop their full individual potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contribute to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others. CUB SCOUTS Cub Scouting means “doing.” Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Apart from the fun and excitement of Cub Scout activities, the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy’s sense of belonging. Contact Jim Johnson for more information at 605-498-1880.
BOY SCOUTS & GIRL SCOUTS Scouting builds youth of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
BOY SCOUTS Boy Scouting is available to boys who have earned the Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old or have completed the fifth grade through 18 years old. The program achieves the BSA’s objectives of developing character, citizenship, and personal fitness. For more information on Boy Scouts contact Nick Miller at 605-940-2477.
GIRL SCOUTS Girl Scouts is dedicated solely to girls - all girls - where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. Girl Scouts is open to girls entering kindergarten through senior year of high school. Contact Gloria Woodring at 605498-2008 or Dakota Horizons at 605-336-2978.
