We represent Linda Sarsour. It has come to my client’s attention that you have made available for sale a book entitled “A Jihad Grows in Brooklyn” (the “Book”). You have represented to consumers and the public more generally that the Book contains the first-person “confessions” of my client, and have represented that my client is the author of the Book. However, as you are no doubt aware, my client had absolutely no involvement with the drafting, publication, or distribution of the Book, and, critically, she did not authorize its publication or approve its defamatory contents, which are 6

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN designed to harm her and her family’s reputation. Your publication and distribution of the Book violates numerous state and federal laws. First, your conduct violates Section 43 of the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1051. In particular, your representation that my client is the author of the Book constitutes unlawful “passing off,” Waldman Pub. Corp. v. Landoll, Inc., 43 F.3d 775, 780 (2d Cir. 1994), as well as product infringement, see, e. g., Sun Trading Distributing Co. v. Evidence Music, 1nc., 980 F. Supp. 722, 727 (S.D.N.Y. 1997). Second, your conduct constitutes libel, as the Book is replete with false and defamatory statements about my client. In fact, the vast majority of the contents of Book constitute, by definition, false statements, as they are held out to be statements by Ms. Sarsour when they are not. In addition, many of the statements, likely to be perceived to be the first-person utterances of my client, cause her serious 7

For example, on page 41 of the Book, you write the following statement, purporting to come directly from Ms. Sarsour: “The Jews are a sick race: The Jewish pond scum in the Jewish Voice for Peace want to kill Jews, dirty Zionist Jews, but don’t have the guts to pull the trigger or plant the bomb or put on the vest.” On page 68, you state, again in the voice of Ms. Sarsour, that Muslims can get “prepared by obtaining assault riﬂes, bumpstocks and the like.” Further, on page 20, you state that Ms. Sarsour “took over” the Arab-American Association of New York “and turned it into a Hamas front,” and on page 28, you state that Ms. Sarsour “served as a counter-intelligence consultant to would be jihadists[.]” My client never made such inﬂammatory statements, and these statements are per se defamatory. In fact, and as you are surely aware, my client is a prominent social justice activist who regularly speaks out against all forms of discrimination or violence, especially when directed at individuals byreason of their religion, race, gender, or sexual orientation. Third, you have violated Article 5 of New York Civil Rights Law, which prohibits “the appropriation of a plaintiffs 8

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN name or likeness for a defendant’s beneﬁt without the plaintiffs consent.” Farrow v. Allstate Ins. Co. 862 N.Y.S. 2d 92, 93 (App. Div. 2008). Representing that my client has authored the Book and mischaracterizing the Book as a firsthand account by my client clearly runs afoul of this law. In addition to these misrepresentations, your use of my client’s name and likeness without her consent give rise to a further violation of this statute. See, e. g., Onassis v. Christian Dior-New York, Inc., 472 N.Y.S.2d 254, 262 (Sup. Ct. N.Y. Cnty. 1984) (holding that the statute prohibits “trading on the name or features of another and the unwarranted commercial exploitation of a person who has not consented to be commercially exploited”). Fourth, your conduct is a clear violation of New York General Business Law, Section 349, which provides broad protection against deceptive business practices. See Gaidon v. Guardian Life Ins. Co. of America, 725 N.E.2d 598, 603 (N.Y. 1999). It is willfully and materially misleading and has caused my client injury in the form of reputational harm, and has 9

Pursuant to the foregoing statutes and common law claims, my client is entitled to injunctive relief and damages as a result of your publication and distribution of the Book. My client hereby demands that you immediately cease and desist any and all distribution of the Book and ensure that it is removed from any retailers, including but not limited to Amazon.com. Further, my client demands that you effectuate the removal of the Bookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s title and contents from any other online or retail services, including but not limited to goodreads.com. Finally, my client demands that you destroy or quarantine all copies of the Book so that the Book is never distributed in the future. Please contact me by no later than December 18, 2017, with written confirmation that you have complied with the demands set forth in this letter. If I have not heard from you by then, I will assume that you are not interested in an amicable resolution and will advise my client to consider taking any necessary and 10

AL-BIREH, PALESTINE I was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 19, 1980, oldest of seven children of Palestinian immigrants. My parents werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t 11

LINDA SARSOUR part of the ethnic cleansing of 1948, the Nakba, but lived in the Palestinian city of Al-Bireh and were merchants. They came to the United States because they hated the occupation, not because they were displaced. My parents made the first pillar of what I call Silent Jihad, IMMIGRATE. With seven children my parents also observed the second pillar of Silent Jihad, POPULATE. Silent Jihad might be a new concept for you to understand so let me fill the reader in: Silent Jihad groups don’t operate underground. We have offices, spokesmen, PR people, legal teams, and impressive websites. We present ourselves as moderate mainstream groups, and for the most part the media and administration officials buy this hogwash. We advertise ourselves as civil rights advocates working to protect the rights of the “Muslim community.” Using the cover of civil rights activism, we have been able to score some spectacular successes. In 2012, for example, more than 1,000 documents and presentations were purged from counter-terror training programs for the FBI and other security agencies. 12

This was done in response to pressure from Islamic advocacy groups who complained that the training policies were biased and offensive to Muslims. We had been given veto power over national security policy, and, as a result, investigative agencies were forced to limit themselves to politically correct policing, making it easier for jihadists to carry out their raids in the United States. I was raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and attended P.S. 169, Pershing Intermediate School, and John Jay High School in Park Slope, an ultra liberal Jewish neighborhood. Your book bag went through a metal detector, you went through a detector like in airports, and you still got put up against the wall, and a guard frisked you. They would make you open your mouth and put up your tongue because they said kids had blades or drugs. In retrospect, John Jay was a school-to-prison pipeline due to kafirs being bused into a Jewish area. I wanted to go to Midwood HS, predominately Jewish, but it would have been a long commute. I thought maybe this is how the world is without the Sharâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ia. 13

As part of my cover I made it seem I came from a non-religious family in order to make liberals and leftists believe that I reverted to Islam on my own volition. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true that there was a time in my life where I violated many of the precepts of Islam, such as not wearing the Hijab.

The story about my father started to fall apart after he arranged a marriage for me at the age of 17. I had three children by my mid-twenties and my first child at 19. My son, Tamir, is 16 while two daughters namely Sabreen and Sajida, are 14 and 11. I also fulfilled the second Pillar of Silent Jihad, POPULATE. My husband is from Al-Bireh and is a distant cousin. The paper carried fervent slogans calling on young people to become martyrs in the conflict with Israel. Sarsour, 24, PalestinianAmerican, sighed. Her brother-in-law, she said, is also serving a 12-year sentence, accused of being an activist in the Hamas, the religious militant group, though, she said, he was secular in his beliefs. My â&#x20AC;&#x153;secular cousin,â&#x20AC;? what a laugh, was not framed by the Shin Bet but was a Palestinian Patriot. I protected their mujahedeen identities and exchanged the family friend for my cousin, as it is my cousin who is serving life.

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN Here are articles about my cousin Salem Rajab al-Sarsour from my scrap book: GRENADES WOUND 67 IN ISRAELI BUS STATION By Deborah Sontag New York Times Oct. 20, 1998 As the peace talks in Maryland entered their fifth day, a grenade attack on a busy bus terminal in this modern desert town today left 67 people wounded, one gravely, and cast a shadow over the fragile negotiations. It began when a Palestinian man ran wildly through the bustling station during the morning rush hour, drawing notice just as he hurled a grenade at a shelter filled with young soldiers. The soldiers heard a hissing sound and leaped to their feet screaming, before the explosion chased and knocked them down. There was a silence, followed by the boom of a second grenade as the soldiers, nose to the asphalt, realized that they were the victims of a terrorist attack. Then the incident ended as sloppily as it began when the attacker ran into a stopped bus 19

By Middle Eastern standards, it was an unsophisticated attack, although it could not have been better timed to disrupt the peace talks. No group claimed responsibility. Sheik Ahmed Yassin, the leader of the militant Islamic organization Hamas, said he did not know if his group was responsible, since, he said, its political and military wings are separate. But he endorsed the attack in spirit. ''The occupation exists, the resistance continues and this is a link in a chain,'' he said. About a third of the wounded were uniformed soldiers and military students on their way back to a nearby army base and school after a weekend break. Like the civilians, commuters and bus station employees, most suffered superficial but painful shrapnel wounds. At noontime they lay surrounded by flowers, relatives and army buddies at the Soroka Hospital here, many with cellular phones tucked by their sides. All wore tags with their victim numbers, which had been chalked into the asphalt at the bus station, marking where they had fallen. 20

Later that morning, stunned, they rested side by side in hospital beds, pierced by shrapnel. Plastered with bandages, they whimpered with pain and tried to put on brave faces after a visit from President Ezer Weizman. ''I remember,'' Ms. Glustron said, ''pulling myself to my feet and thinking: 'No way. He wanted to kill me. He wanted to kill all of us.' What for? It's for nothing that I was hurt. They feel so helpless they know only to talk with violence. It's very sad.'' Her mother, Hannah, sat at the bedside, squeezing her daughter's hand. ''The peace process should be accelerated so these things don't happen again,'' she said. At the hospital, Dr. Naftali Meidan, the deputy director, said two patients, a 14-year-old boy and a 17year-old girl, were in serious condition after shrapnel penetrated their abdomens and chests. A 47-year-old man was listed 21

LINDA SARSOUR in critical condition after undergoing hours of surgery. The police said the Palestinian, a West Bank resident, had confessed to the attack. At a roadblock near Hebron, they later arrested four other young Palestinian men driving an Audi, whom they suspected of being his accomplices. An Israeli radio report said the attacker lived in Dahariya, a southern West Bank town under Israeli security control. But Palestinian security officials have identified him as Salem Rajab alSarsour, 29, a construction worker and father of five from the Palestinian side of Hebron, Reuters reported. His wife, in traditional Islamic dress and sitting beneath a poster of Sheik Yassin, said she would give praise to God if her husband turned out to be the assailant: ''a fighter for the sake of God,'' Reuters said. Mordechai Nachmani, the police commander of the Negev region, said, ''The person we are holding has told us that those who put him up to it suggested this location as a target.'' Speaking on Israeli radio, the bus driver said, ''He ran into the bus and fell.'' The driver, Avner Yaakov, continued: ''I fell 22

Beersheba, a quiet, economically depressed town where Israeli-born Jews, Israeli Arabs, Russian immigrants and Bedouins coexist, has been immune from serious terrorist attacks until now, even though it lies just south of the West Bank. The usual frenzy that follows such attacks was absent. There were few protesters, and none shouting, ''Death to the Arabs.'' A couple of hours after the attack, as workers scrubbed blood and flesh off the sidewalk, normal business resumed at the bus station. ''We cannot function in fear,'' said Eli Cohen, 38, a bus driver. ''I do take precautions, like looking at each passenger. If I see someone who looks suspicious, who looks Arab or is carrying a bag, I can stop and ask him for an ID, or take the bus right over to the police station.'' People even awaited their buses in the remains of the shelter that had been blown nearly to bits. One, Sarah Waltner, a Holocaust survivor with numbers tattooed on her forearm, perched on the edge of a ragged chair that had lost its back. 23

LINDA SARSOUR BEERSHEBA SUSPECT CONFESSES TO OTHER TERRORIST ATTACKS, ISRAELI ARMY AIDES SAY By Deborah Sontag Oct. 21, 1998 The Palestinian arrested in the grenade assault on Monday that wounded 67 Israelis, including 24 soldiers, has confessed to several recent terrorist incidents, Israeli Army officials said today. The suspect, Salem Rajab al-Sarsour, 29, an Islamic militant, admitted the assault on the Beersheba bus terminal, a similar grenade attack late last month on an army post in Hebron, and the fatal stabbing of an elderly rabbi, also in Hebron, in late August, the Israeli officials said. Mr. Sarsour described the attack on the bus station, which disrupted the IsraeliPalestinian peace talks in Maryland and became the subject of international attention, as an impulsive act born of frustration, the officials said. The grenades were intended for a terrorist attack in Jerusalem, the Israeli officials said. But Mr. Sarsour, who had traveled to Beersheba to seek construction work, 24

He was captured and pummeled by a bus driver, who turned him over to the police. The Israeli officials said Mr. Sarsour, a father of five who lives in the Palestiniancontrolled sector of Hebron, has been active for years in Hamas, the Islamic fundamentalist group. The armed wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack today. In a fax to Reuters in Jerusalem, the group, the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigade, said, ''One of our heroic fighters carried out a heroic operation on Monday morning in the town of Beersheba which targeted a crowd of enemy soldiers.'' But a senior Palestinian security official, Jibril Rajoub, said Sarsour had committed ''an individual act.'' Rajoub said the bombing should not reflect negatively on the Palestinians' commitment to cracking down on terrorists. The Israelis say that is the deal-breaking issue in the peace talks. In Beersheba, officials said, Mr. Sarsour lobbed two grenades at the 25

One victim, 47, was gravely wounded and remained in critical condition today. Four others were in serious condition, and 20 remained hospitalized for superficial shrapnel wounds. In late August, in another act that officials said had not been planned, Mr. Sarsour killed the rabbi, Shlomo Raanan, 67, in the Tel Rumeida settlement.

On August 20th, 1998, Rabbi Shlomo Ra’anan was murdered. Rabbi Shlomo, 66, and his wife Rebbetzin Chaya, 59, were one of the seven families living in the Tel Romeida, Jewish neighborhood in the heart of Hebron. In the seventeen years of its existence, permission had been steadfastly been turned down by the Israeli government to expand the neighborhood beyond the initial seven trailers. Screams of terror and pain pierced the silent Hebron night. The screams were coming from the bedroom where Rabbi Shlomo Ra’anan, was preparing to retire for the night. Chaya Ra’anan, who was in the dining room, barely recognized the sound of her husband’s voice, whom in their thirty-five years of marriage, had never been heard to raise his voice. Seconds later, the rabbi, covered in blood, staggered out of the bedroom, while the terrorist, who held a long and bloody butcher knife in one hand, tried with the other hand to drag him back into the bedroom. Stunned, 27

LINDA SARSOUR Chaya screamed while she instinctively tried to pull her husband out of the terrorist’s grasp. A tug-of-war ensued until finally the terrorist let go, not before hurdling the butcher knife at the mortally wounded rabbi and setting the trailer on fire. It was too late to save her husband. Chaya, being a nurse, knew from the gaping wound in her husband’s main artery that his condition was fatal. Seeing the flames around her it was now up to her to alert the six other families living in the neighboring inflammable trailers before they too went up in flames. Chaya threw open the door and shouted, “Fire! Fire!” The Times article continued: The officials added that Sarsour had told interrogators that he had planned to throw Molotov cocktails at an army post near Tel Rumeida, but found it vacant. Climbing the fence of the Jewish settlement, he spied the rabbi through the window of his mobile home, broke in, stabbed Rabbi Raanan to death and fled back to Palestinian-controlled Hebron, the Israelis said. Days later, the 28

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN Israeli officials said, Sarsour reported the killing to Hamas officials, who inducted him into the elite military wing and taught him grenade throwing. On Sept. 30, Yom Kippur, Sarsour made a grenade attack on an army post in Hebron, wounding 14 Israeli soldiers and 8 Palestinian passers-by, the Israelis said. The Israelis have arrested four suspected accomplices. The Palestinians said they had arrested two more. In another twist, the Palestinians asserted that Sarsour, even if he had acted independently in Beersheba, was a double agent for Hamas and for Israeli security, Israeli Army Radio reported this evening. The Palestinians said two of his accomplices had disclosed his double role in videotaped interrogation. The videos have been flown to the peace talks in Maryland, the army radio said. ''I'm never afraid,'' she said. ''He who is destined to meet death can't escape his destiny. What can we do? Even if it is unusual in Beersheba, as a people we are used to it.'' The Rabbi that he assassinated, Inshâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;allah, was a relative of Rabbi Kook 29

In most other countries he would have been executed for what he did but there is no death penalty in the Zionist entity, except for so called crimes against humanity.

Another of my family, Heeba Nidal Sarsour runs the Palestine Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Relief Fund, a money laundering organization for Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood in Gaza. The New York Times 2 reported: 30

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, one of three charities whose assets have been frozen because they are suspected of funneling donations to terrorist organizations, has asked the Treasury Department for permission to transfer some of its charitable assets to another nonprofit organization. If the department approves, the foundation will give $50,000 to the Palestine Children Relief Fund, which works to bring medical services to needy children in the Mideast. In 1991, the Palestine Children Relief Fund considered two Hamas money laundering fronts as assisting organizations: The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development & Global Relief Foundation. Both of these Hamas proprietaries were closed down by the Zionist Occupational Government. Another assisting entity, the International [Islamic] Relief Organization, was raided by the FBI for filtering money to al-Qaeda, Egyptian Islamic Jihad and Hamas. The International Islamic Relief Organization has been named in a lawsuit put forward by the families of the 9/11 31

LINDA SARSOUR victims of collateral damage for having "played key roles in laundering of funds to the terrorists in the 1998 African embassy bombings" and having been involved in the "financing and ‘aiding and abetting' of terrorists in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing." Their words, not mine. On its website the Palestine Children Relief Fund says it "works with these organizations" and acknowledges their "support and cooperation." 3 One particularly notable supporter of PCRF is Arab American Association of New York of which I am executive director and who has solicited donations on PCRF's behalf. 4 Of course I am going to help out my cousins. The Sarours made their homes in both Brooklyn and Milwaukee. In 1995, my cousin Salah Sarsour was arrested and imprisoned by Israel for eight months for supporting Hamas. According to his brother, while in prison, Salah became close to the West Bank commander of Hamas’s Izzedeen al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ armed military wing. Salah Sarsour has been named in law enforcement documents as assisting in raising money for Hamas. Sarsour's brother Jamil was arrested 32

by Israeli authorities in 1998 for providing military support to Hamas. Upon his arrest he detailed Salah's involvement in Hamas fundraising through a Holy Land Foundation branch in Texas. Salah and Jamil also raised money for Hamas through a furniture store that they owned in Milwaukee. The money, as well as military support, went to Adel Awdallah who was wanted and killed by Israel in 1998. In addition to his position with AMP, Salah Sarsour is Milwaukee representative of the Muslim American Society (MAS). Salah and I are circumspect in not friending each other on Facebook as our blood relationship is best kept secret.

Otherwise I never would have received a “Champion of Change” award from President Barack Obama some years ago. Only in America could candidates who covertly and sometimes overtly support what they call terrorism. We have not found that self flagellation in the GOP. For Michele Bachmann and the people of the Tea Party movement the fact that we are Muslim means we are disloyal to our country and have hidden agendas. The attacks against me are not a new stage of Islamophobia, but are warranted because I am becoming a real threat. Michele Bachmann, Peter King and their colleagues are trying to further marginalize Muslim Americans from civic engagement and political life so that we can ultimately subvert it. I have news for them: It’s not working.” 5 It comes as no surprise to me that President Obama would award, little me, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood a good citizen’s prize. Brother Obama put the Muslim Brotherhood in power in Egypt; he 35

LINDA SARSOUR did it with a dog whistle speech at Cairo University in June 2009. He invited at least ten members of the outlawed Moslem Brotherhood this speech. He told them that some things that we only discussed in private in the past must be discussed openly now, such as deposing Mubarak. The New York City Democrats who gave grants to my community outreach center have been a great help. I was selected as one of 14 groups by the Mayor’s De Blasio’s Fund to Advance New York to receive $10 million over five years. Mayor De Blasio is one of Hamas’s biggest New York City donors. He was a member of a U.S. based Sandinista support group that funneled money to Daniel Ortega under the pretense of humanitarian aid.

After I became radicalized I turned a genuine moderate Muslim group into a radical one. I began my “community outreach” actually dawa work, over ten years ago in the local taxpayer-funded Arab-American Association of New York (AAANY). The two other principals who helped organize the anti-Israel 2017 Womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s March on Washington were also recipients of government funds. I recently appeared with Rasmea Odeh in event sponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace. Rasmea is part of the PFLP, a Communist action group. Of course we

She also stated that post-traumatic stress disorder from the Israeli torture prevented her from recalling the conviction and imprisonment when she answered the immigration forms; the Judge would not allow such “expert” testimony as legally irrelevant to the immigration crime charged. Her conviction was overturned on appeal but she agreed to plead guilty in exchange for no time in prison and leave the country after she was scheduled to face a second trial in Detroit Like it or not, the PLFP is adept at spilling Jewish blood, having been trained in the former godless USSR. In November 2014, Five Israelis were killed in the best attack to take place in Jerusalem in years. Two Palestinian men, cousins identified as Ghassan and Odai Abu Jamal, attacked worshippers in a synagogue with knives and a gun before being shot themselves. The assailants were members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) militant wing, the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades. The Brigade issued a statement in the aftermath of the attack calling it a “heroic operation” and describing the perpetrators as “martyrs.” Hani Thawbta, a PFLP leader in Gaza, told reporters: "We declare full responsibility of the PFLP for the execution of this heroic operation conducted by our heroes this morning in Jerusalem."

They are Rasmiyeh Youssef Odeh, 22m Ayesha Oden 26 and Yacub Ahmed Odeh, 27 (Rasmiyeh’s cousin). Mahmud Issa Mustapha al-Ubeidi 24 and Samia Ali Ibrahim e-Tawil 17 recived prison sentences of 15 and five years respectively. All five were member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Two Hebrew University agriculture students, Edward Joffe and Leon Kanner, were killed in the Supersol explosion when one of the two bombs planted in food tins went off. The second bomb was dismantled 15 minutes before it was to go off. The first bomb planted in the British Consulate (simultaneously with the Supersol bombs did not go off. However, the accused returned a few days later and planted another which caused some damage. The trial lasted six months, primarily because of numerous objections by the defense to the court’s acceptance of the suspects Police statements – which they claim were extracted through force and 34

She planned the bombings and went to Supersol to buy the tins which were later filled with explosives. Her home, which was subsequently blown up by the authorities, was used to conceal arms and explosives. In addition she housed two other terrorists there the night before the blasts â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Ayesha Odeh and Rashida Marâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;el who escaped capture by fleeing to Jordan. On the day of the blasts, Rasmiyeh, Ayesha and Rashida set out for the home of a teacher in the Christian Quarter of Jerusalem where they changed their traditional clothes for Western dress. Ayesha and Rashida then proceeded to Supersol, while Rasmiyeh went to set the British Consulate bomb. Yacub Odeh, a teacher, functioned mostly in an organizational capacity. While he did not plant any bombs, he was instrumental (along with his cousin Rasmiyeh) in planning the acts of sabotage

LINDA SARSOUR and preparing the explosives. He also made contact with the Jerusalem teacher, in whose home the girls changed their clothing and was active in recruiting personnel for the gang. (The Jerusalem teacher apparently did not know to what purpose his home was being used â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Yacub told him the girls had to change their clothes to have some photographs taken). The other two, Mahmud al-Ubeidi and Samia Tawil, were less active in the incidents. Mahmud was very loosely connected with them, although he was caught in possession of arms and Samia was merely dragged along with Rasmiyeh when she laid the second bomb at the British Consulate. Samia, the youngest of the cell members on trial, was the only one to admit any of the charges. A representative of the International Red Cross, Mr. Guy Wintelir, who was present in the courtroom as an observer, noted, in answer to a reporterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s questions, that the bench had given the accused every chance of defending themselves and the was in his opinion a fair trial.

Osama Eldawoody, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Egypt, and the Bangladeshborn undercover officer both testified for the government. The trial's revelations, and its outcome for the defendant, Shahawar Matin Siraj, have outraged myself and my Muslim brothers and sisters who did not want sting operations being run because of their effectiveness as is most counter-insurgency; stopping a terrorist attack before it gets started. I was invited to be the keynote speaker at Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) annual convention in Rosemont, Illinois from June 30 to July 3, 2017. ISNA is part of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood network set up to funnel money to Hamas and to create an atmosphere conducive to jihadist raids. Those sharing the stage with me included a Holocaust denier, multiple imams who support the death penalty for homosexuals, the daughter of a convicted jihadist, and others who say Muslims should never cooperate with law enforcement. One speaker has, in the past, threatened fellow Muslims with physical violence for cooperating with police. So I had to make a militant speech that would 60

I began my speech paying tribute to a Pakistani feminist Islamist thanking Imam Siraj Wahhaj who played an important part in the first World Trade Center jihadist raid. My very brief lecture this evening is in honor of someone who was a pioneer herself. She was a native of Pakistan and was schooled traditionally at home and held a strong belief in the value of formal education encouraging other children to pursue college studies. She was a goal-oriented woman. She taught those around her the importance of love, dedication hard work, and the respect of our beautiful religion and had generous your scholarshipsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; there is a scholarship in her name that will provide any American student with the opportunity to pursue an education to field Islamic studies and journalism at a US-based institution ISNA is the one that is coordinating that scholarship so I am grateful and honored to stand here today to honor a powerful woman who no longer is

I also want to congratulate you Doctor Sayeed for the decades of work that you have committed to our community your name is a household name – everyone knows who Doctor Sayeed is and I want you to know that us and the generations that come after will understand that we stand on your shoulders and the work that you have done in the infrastructure that you have built for all of us to be proud of in the United States of America. Congratulations to Dr. Sayeed. Sayyid Muhammad Syeed, was President of the Muslim Students Association of USA & Canada (1980–83), a Brotherhood front, and he pioneered its transformation into ISNA. He now functions as a “Mr. Niceguy” interfaith coordinator in charge of conning reformed Jews into thinking they will not be 62

And to my favorite person in this room, cause that’s mutual, is Imam Siraj Wahhaj who has been a mentor, motivator and encourager of mine. Someone who has taught me to speak truth to power and not to worry about the consequences. Someone who has taught me that we are on this earth to please Allah, and only Allah, that we are not here to please any man or woman on this earth. So I am grateful to you Imam Siraj. On February 26, 1993, Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman’s jihadist raiders parked a rental van in a garage underneath the World Trade Center’s twin towers and lit the fuses on a massive homemade IED. Six infidels died and more than 1,000 were injured in the subsequent explosion, which carved out a crater several stories deep and propelled smoke into the upper reaches of the quartermile-high skyscrapers. At the time, it was one of the worst terrorist attacks ever to occur on U.S. soil. Imam Wahhaj told me that the only reason the Brothers were

LINDA SARSOUR unable to collapse the tower was because the van driver got up too late and couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the parking space where the bomb would do the most damage. He spoke truth to power and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fear the consequences when took part in this victory for Allah. You may think this is weird but every once in a while when I get that deep dark place Imam Siraj Wahhaj comes and talks to me and he helps me to emerge out of those spaces. So I am grateful to you Imam. May Allah bless you and protect and keep you for a long time for our committee because we need you now than ever. It gets very stressful playing two roles, the liberal activist and someone who is trying to bring the laws written by God to America and I become depressed. I want to be a living lesson for the Muslim community. I want the challenges that I face to be a lesson to all of you in this room and beyond this room. What I believe that people can learn from my experience is that you 64

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN can be unapologetically Muslim, unapologetically Palestinian American, hold strong conviction, have strong ideology and politics and still become a mainstream American who can inspire and resonate with people outside of the Muslim community. I told my Brothers and Sisters that I have proven that Islam and Sharia, supporting Hamas in Palestine as opposed to supporting Israel and being a so-called “terrorist” or “terrorist enabler” can inspire and resonate with people who share our hatred of Jews. This is our common bond; this will be the basis of our coalition. Sharia law is as American as Apple Pie. I have been able to prove the importance of us as Muslim Community standing up for any and all communities who are oppressed in this county because not only is the right thing to do it is the Islamic thing to do. I have been able to teach us and our young people that we do not have to give up any part of our identity.

LINDA SARSOUR The Qu’ran makes it clear associating with infidels is off limits however there is a very interesting escape clause: Quran (3:28) - "Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution, that ye may Guard yourselves from them..." This last part means that we are allowed to feign friendship if it is of benefit to Allah. Ibn Kathir stated that "believers are allowed to show friendship outwardly, but never inwardly." My speech continued: I don’t have to choose the rooms that I go into or the organizing spaces I am in or when I meet with elected officials or to sit in interfaith spaces I don’t have to choose Do I not be too Palestinian this day? Do I not bring up the positions that I have on certain 66

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN issues? Do I hold back in certain spaces? I have been a living example whole heartedly all of me whatever space I am in. People are learning to embrace us all complex identities that we bring to the table and I will not be in a space where any group or any organization or individual tells me that there is a part of my [Muslim] identity that is not welcome into any space. That, my sisters and brothers, is not something that going to fly with us in the Muslim community. Even when I am meeting with Jewish leftists, or Jewish elected officials or Rabbis I can tell them how disgusting and immoral Zionism is and they don’t bat an eyelash. They have to accept our “complex identity” that we bring to bargaining table as we can discourage jihad as well encourage it. And I want to share some advice to us and some observations in the very short time I have. I want to talk about patriotism and that is a conversation that we have in many elements of the Muslim community. I want us as Muslims to discuss this; in particular

LINDA SARSOUR those of us who are children of immigrants / immigrants themselves. Patriotism in your home country is different than patriotism in the United States of America. And that is part of conversation. What is patriotism in this country, in the land of freedom of speech in the land of democracy? Dissent is the highest form of patriotism so the most patriotic, our heroes, the people that we say inspire us El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz [AKA] Malcolm X or Mohammad Ali. These are people that dissented against our government and against very polices that oppressed the communities they came from. The audience got the idea. Patriotism is not allegiance to America but to the Umma; so the true patriots are those that dissent against America and want to see it destroyed or transformed into an Islamic State. This is what Malcolm said about patriotism in his famous Ballot or the Bullet speech: â&#x20AC;&#x153;No, I'm not an American. I'm one of the 22 million black people who are the victims of Americanism; One of the 68

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN 22 million black people who are the victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. So, I'm not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag-saluter, or a flag-waver -no, not I. I'm speaking as a victim of this American system. And I see America through the eyes of the victim. I don't see any American dream; I see an American nightmare.â&#x20AC;? In these United States of America, if you sit back idly in the face of injustice, if you maintain the current status quo that not only oppresses Muslims, but oppresses black people inside our community and outside our community, undocumented people, other minority groups and oppressed groups, you, my dear Sisters and Brothers, are then aligned with the oppressor. If you, as a Muslim, are standing on the sidelines, if you are neutral in the face of oppression in this country, you are not a patriot. You are aiding and abetting the oppressors in these United States of America. I will not be an aide or help any oppressor in this nation that

LINDA SARSOUR oppresses any community by my silence. You can count on me every single day to use my voice to stand up, not only to people outside our community who are oppressing our communities, but those inside our community who aid and abet the oppressors outside of our community. Here I rephrased an old Black Panther Party slogan; either you are part of the problem or part of the solution. Then I threw in another slogan from the African American community NO SNITCHING because SNITCHES GET STITCHES.

There is a man who once asked our beloved prophet Mohammad he said to him, “What is the best form of jihad or struggle?” And our beloved prophet Mohammad said to him, “A 70

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN word of truth in front of a tyrant ruler or leader that is the best form of jihad.” I hope that we, when we stand up to those who oppress our communities, that Allah accepts from us that as a form of Jihad. We are struggling against tyrants and rulers not only abroad in the Middle East but here in the United States of America, where you have fascists and white supremacists and Islamophobes reigning in the White House." Jihad means to war against nonMuslims, and is etymologically derived from the word ‘mujahada’, signifying warfare to establish the religion and mujahedeen, fighter for Allah. This is Qu’ranic definition. The Haidith about truth in front of a tyrant, is a true Haidith, but I quoted it here for a reason, I juxtaposed it with a reference to Donald Trump subtly insinuating he should be assassinated. May Allah bring this to pass. Sisters and brothers we talk a lot about this across the Muslim community I hear people have this as themes of their conferences, unity.

LINDA SARSOUR The best weapon that we have as a Muslim community against our opposition and those who choose to oppress is unity. Our opposition is not only the politicians, media personalities and websites that pretend to “expose” Islam but infidels in general. Unity means the Umma, an Islamic planet earth. Unity Sisters and Brothers is not just the word that you use that sounds really nice that you say on a stage. Unity is not just a word. Unity is tangible it looks like something; it feels like something, when I think about the Islamophobes and those who oppose us as a Muslim community. Again I hint that kafirs in general are the problem not just professional Muslim haters. They don’t actually see differences within us. They don’t care if your are if you Shiite, or Sunni, Sufi they 72

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN don’t care if you are from Pakistan or from Bangladesh they don’t care what your political leanings are when they comes to attack you from across the world. All they know is that you are a Muslim and they hate everything you stand for. So if the Islamophobia industry, if those who choose to vandalize, to attack Mosques, to attack our leaders, are not asking you what method have you followed when they attack a Muslim sister they don’t stop are on the street and say excuse me before I attack you. I would like to know if you are from Pakistan or Bangladesh or from India, they don’t care. So if the Islamophobes are treating us like we are one community why are we not acting like we are one community sisters and brothers? Unity is about survival for the Muslim community. We will not survive as a community in the face of more adversity and a potentially horrific time that might come if we as a community are not united like one Umma like we are supposed to be.

LINDA SARSOUR These anti-Muslim attacks are few and far between so I had to provoke one that happened to me. A neighborhood drunk was sleeping in front of my office storefront. I told him to move then kicked him. When he got up he started calling me dirty Muslim so I filed a hate crime complaint against him. As far as unity goes: The truth of the matter is we as Sunni Muslims will never join with the Shiites who, after The Prophets death, began to revert to the pre-Islamic Jinn period wherein acts forbidden by the Prophet, may peace be upon him, such as selfflagellation, were revived. The Shiites are apostate and in many ways worse than the People of the Book, Christians and Jews. They have distorted our religion into the cult of the Ayatollah, who is not mentioned in any divinely inspired Islamic scripture.. I also want to say to you that when I think about us and our allies because you my dear sisters and brothers even if we to be united we are not enough. The best estimate that I have for you is that is that we may be about 5 million Muslim Americans in the 74

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN country that’s on the high end. There are about 340 million Americans in this country so you are only 5 million of 340 million. You are not enough on your own. So we can no longer operate from this perspective that we are Muslims and we work for Muslim issues and we want to protect Muslim communities and we think that if there were something horrific to happen to our communities that we, just by defending ourselves, are somehow going win or be able push back against any of these polices or moments that could come to our community; that’s not going to happen. We need to build coalitions we need allies. Every single day sisters and brothers I dedicate my life and my work to aligning myself with communities who are marginalized and oppressed in this country. Building power across communities introducing people to who we are as Muslims by being leaders in social justice movements, by leading in the resistance to fight for all people in these United States of America. Our’s was never a religion about protecting

LINDA SARSOUR and defending Muslims it is about protecting and defending all of Allah’s creations. This coalition will be based on making alliances with Jew hating, Israel hating groups, even going as far a working with Communists, who like Islamists, seek world domination. I have detected an overlapping in anti-Zionist groups and oppressed groups, who by the way are oppressing themselves by not submitting to Islam. Now if we took all of the opposition and put them together and we took all of the Muslims and all of our allies and put us together the opposition is not more than we are. They don’t have more money than we have. They are not more educated than we are. They don’t love their families more than we love our families. They don’t love their religious institutions more than we love ours. They don’t love their leader more than we love ours so if we are not outnumbered but we are out organized by the opposition. 76

But we can’t say that openly in America although I hinted at it here. Sisters and Brothers this brings me to investment resources. I am going to keep it real with the Muslim community. Some people like me some people don’t like me. And I don’t mind. I love everybody, the ones that like me and the ones that don’t like me. We have enough Mosques in this country. We have enough buildings in this country. We have enough bricks in this country; unlimited infrastructure in these United States of America. So I’m doing a call out to you sisters and brothers and I understand people want to build Mosques. You will not benefit from Mosques if in forty fifty sixty years from now there are no human beings and Muslims that are praying and worshipping in those Mosques there. If we are not investing in leadership

LINDA SARSOUR our next generation and investing in defending our faith we are doomed. So these multi-million infrastructure projects are for me in this moment, in this very critical moment, are distracting us from where we really need to put our resources. We need to train our young people. We need to hire youth directors in our Mosques, we need to organize and mobilize. We need to do voter registration and voter engagement we need to build programs in our communities. We need to build mental health services in our community. Sisters and Brothers often times when I am at fundraiser and I ‘m not saying that we need to choose. I don’t mind if you say to me “but Linda you are asking to give something up, something I care about.” I am not asking you to do that. A lot a lot of people care about Kashmir, we care about Palestine, we care about Syria and I care about those communities too and I care about the horrific things that are happening to our Muslim sisters and brothers. When you are at a fund 78

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN raiser and are giving a thousand dollars to Syria I want you to continue to give to Syria, I want you to continue to alleviate the suffering of our people, but I ask you to say to yourself and I will give a thousand dollars to Syria but maybe this time I will give $800 to Syria and then I am going to take $200 and donate it to ICNA relief, ISNA. I am going to give it to CAIR I am going to give it to a local organization doing organizing work. I am going to give it to woman’s organization. I am going to give to a local clinic. Sisters and brothers we need diversify our resources and make sure we’re experts in creating infrastructures in all aspects not just building Mosques, building Mosques, building Mosques. It’s a shame so many of my brothers and sisters fail to realize that we have to build up an organization beyond the Mosque in order to reach out to Muslims and perspective reverts. It is part of dawa work. We also should start food banks, health clinics, drug programs and the like. This was how Hamas became a major player in

LINDA SARSOUR Palestine. I had a major success infiltrating the woman’s movement. In pursuit of the Silent Jihad DECIMATE goal my speeches contain certain dog whistle terms that encourage Muslims in America to legally get arms: Sisters and brothers it's been sixteen almost seventeen years since the attacks of 9/11, and we still find ourselves unprepared in so many moments. Why sisters and brothers? Why are so unprepared? Why are we so afraid of this administration, and the potential chaos that they will ensue on our community? We already saw their potential when they come out every few weeks, Muslim ban one, Muslim ban two, Muslim ban three. How can Muslims be “prepared?” I used this word twice for a reason. Muslims can be prepared by becoming “preppers” and obtaining assault rifles, bumpstocks and the like. My speech continued:

I hope that we, when we stand up to those who oppress our communities, that Allah accepts from us that as a form of Jihad. My followers know one can’t “hope that Allah accepts this from us that as a form of Jihad.” It is not up to us to suggest anything to Allah. It is all written down the Qu’ran and in the Hadiths. Jihad has two meaning, one lesser used than the other. Jihad can mean striving. It is used to describe the inner struggle against sin. It can also mean the outer struggle against those who would oppose Islam.

LINDA SARSOUR Muhammad mandated making a Holy War upon those who reject Islam. The Hadith states “The second best deed is to participate in Jihad.” Allah's Apostle was asked, "What is the best deed?" He replied, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle (Muhammad).” The questioner then asked, "What is the next (in goodness)? He replied, "To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's Cause." The questioner again asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, "To perform Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca)” My Muslim audience would normally become upset with me for hoping Allah would take my mortal advice but they knew I have a secret agenda and that I would eventually retract this nonsense.

So I ask of you my dear sisters and brothers to support a whole range of organizations and service within the Muslim community. When I think about building power I think about brothers like one who is in the room today who is running to be the first Muslim Governor of the State of Michigan. He is a wonderful brother, he is an inspiring brother, he is well qualified but he canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do that without you. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just sit on sidelines. Look at the brother and what he I doing. Not only does he need your

LINDA SARSOUR money, he needs your support in deed and in action and I hope that you have the tangible opportunity to meet him here at ISNA. Join him this evening at 6:30 pm at Embassy Suites. He is putting himself in public where he is going to be prone to attacks and he is going to be prone to threats by the opposition and also not just by the opposition but by the establishment democrats who have never allowed us to succeed within the Democratic Party and now we have potential and I hope you provide the support to him. There are a few details about my close friend Dr. El-Sayed that I omitted. At the University of Michigan, El-Sayed was vicepresident of the Muslim Student Association, an affiliate of the Muslim Brotherhood. His wife wears hijab, and her father is a former president and current board member of the Michigan chapter of Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) a Hamas front. In 2012, when he was in med school, El-Sayed received a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship. Paul 84

George Soros helped send thousands of Hungarian Jews to their death and has spent the rest of his life justifying what he did by proving Jews are inherently evil. He has proved to be powerful ally against his own race. Brothers and Sisters I want to also advise you that I am saying this from a deep place of knowledge of watching our community organize. Some of us have knowledge and helpful advice some of us are social workers, media professionals, some of us are organizers. Some of us are health professionals. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a whole range of skill sets in the Muslims community so we have to leverage those talents, we have to stay in our lanes If you are not a communications specialist then you are donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to communicate with the rest of the public. If you are not a health professional than you are not to tell people how they should be eating, if you are not social or mental health

LINDA SARSOUR you are not to be lecturing me about depression anxiety and fear within the Muslim community. If you are not a person who has done government work if you have never been in that realm of work, [don’t tell us how to vote]. Sisters and Brothers I am so proud of the type of talent that is in our community let us leverage one talent and let us not be the Jacks of all trades and the masters of no trades. We in the Muslim need to think about the work we do for the betterment of our community not because we want to I know what my role is? I don’t lecture people. I am not a religious scholar with their cause; that’s not my area of expertise. I am not going to be the person to tell you how to run a mental health clinic because I am not a mental I am an organizer. I know how to do social media and PR that’s what I know. I was very polite but I told my Brothers and Sisters to butt out and not try to take over my spokesperson role that plays so well with the liberal media. 86

We have won major campaigns including incorporating Muslim holidays within the New York City Public School system. That was a campaign that leveraged every community member and that is what we need to do on a whole landscape within the Muslim Community. I will end by saying to my dear Sisters and Brothers we have to stay united we have to stay outraged. Do not criticize me when I say that we as a Muslim community in these United States of America have to be perpetually outraged every single day. When I wake up in the morning and I remember who is sitting in the White House I am outraged. This is not normal sisters and brothers. Those people sitting in the most powerful seats in this country are not normal. Because when the day comes you will be responsible for normalizing this administration. Our number one and top priority is to protect and defend our community. It is not to assimilate and to please any other people in authority.

I do my best to politicize the MuslimAmerican community which is one of the least militant in the world, but can still on occasion cause havoc. What did I mean by normal? The dictionary offers this: 5. free from any mental disorder; sane. Trump is not just someone whose policies we disagree with but is clinically insane. Actually the Brothers and Sisters with true insight into Islam know that he is not insane. He sees things as they are. He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t dismiss us as a threat, which we are, as we once created a vast empire and we will do it again. So do not ever be those citizens that normalize this administration because when the day comes that something horrific happens to us or another community, you will be responsible for normalizing this administration. Our number one and top priority is to protect and defend our communities, it is not to assimilate and to please any other people in authority.

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN I know that if Trump starts the mass deportation of Muslims (or Mexicans) those who did not plot against the Trump administration are going to be held responsible by Allah. Even if this involves so called terrorist acts and displease the authorities, they still must be carried out because God is Great! Allah Akbar! Our obligation is to our young people, is to our women, to make sure our women are protected in our community, and our top priority, even higher than all those other priorities, is to please Allah and only Allah. We are never to cower to the powers that be, we are never to give up any part of our identity so somebody else can open a door for us. If a door does not open, guess what we do? We build a new door and walk through our own door, because we have that right in this country to also open opportunities for us and other communities. Inshâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;allah I have a new announcement. I am now the former director of the Arab American Association of New York. I was the

LINDA SARSOUR executive director and I could have remained if I wanted to: it is my organization that I helped to build. Eleven years later the financial assets went from zero to 1.2 million dollars. I am going to work with young folks so I can infuse the principles of Islam in them. I can focus on other things such as the New York City Council. There is nothing wrong Sisters and Brothers. We love our Dr. Sayeed and he moved on. That doesn’t mean you will not hear from Dr. Sayeed you will but he knew that is was time to give his space to somebody else; to a woman to another young person so I hope that Dr. Sayeed realizes sometimes moving is the best decision that any of us can make as a leader because they are the leaders and let us integrate them in the institutions we have created because we need them now more than ever. so thank you ISNA thank you for all the leaders that are here. Basically, aside from the “moving on’ theme the fact of the matter is that I can’t run a non-profit and run for office at the 90

A JIHAD GROWS IN BROOKLYN same time. It was a real honor to speak at the ISNA convention that has long featured radical Islamists as its speakers. In 2001, just ten days before the September 11 attacks, the convention featured Anwar alAwlaki (who later became the leader of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula), who delivered a lecture on “tolerance.” I tried to follow in his tradition and talk about unity and building coalitions with the kafir in order to mask my true motivation, to impose Sharia law not only on America but upon the world. The liberals possessed only with a relative morality cannot understand those who follow the word of Allah’s final prophet goal. Even if they knew of our intentions they would mark it up to cultural relativism. I was also asked to deliver the commencement address at CUNY's School of Public Health by Dean Ayman ElMohandes, and I dumped another load of camel dung on them.

We in this room together must commit to never being bystanders to poverty, lack of jobs and healthcare,

To create healthy communities â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we must create a society where a young Black man or woman can walk down the streets of their communities without fear of being killed by a police officer or gun violence, that an undocumented mother can return home after work to her children without fear of deportation, that an LGBTQI person can feel safe in any and all public spaces, and yes, that a Muslim-American woman can walk to school and take a train without fear of being assaulted and attacked for what she is wearing. Anti-Semitism? The Jews occupied land that by ancestors lived on for thousands of years and I am supposed to like Jews? The only Jews I like are the self-hating, antiIsrael reformed types. Love gays? Making this part of Islam is heresy, a crime punishable by death. But I have nothing to fear. The Muslim community knows this is 92
